00:05all right let's recap the giants tie tie to the commanders down in washington on sunday
00:12this is your blue rush after review we've watched the tape we broke down the storylines now it's
00:18time to talk about them myself here brandon london joined by long-time giants beat writer
00:23for the new york post paul schwartz uh paul rainy day down there in dc i don't have to tell
00:28you you
00:29were down there um a tie i feel as though as the player in me is like that that felt
00:37like a loss
00:38because you had the game locked up you fought you battered back but obviously the fan to him seeing
00:44me i would take anything outside of a loss let's get your thoughts then let's break down the story
00:50lines that we feel as though the people want to hear us talk about today all right brand first of
00:56all you have that chelsea banner behind you right it should be an arsenal banner because arsenal's
01:02the champions that should be an arsenal banner and what do we call them in the premier league we don't
01:06call them tides what do we call them draws but draw right and and every time if you would ask
01:12me
01:12how did arsenal do today i would ask you how did chelsea do it and they would say they they
01:17had a
01:17draw i always ask i always ask my son what kind of draw was it right was it a good
01:22draw it was a bad
01:23draw yeah will you will you lose in one nothing and you scored late will you up to nothing and
01:28you get conceded too late goals you know so this i mean dan quinn after this game said he was
01:35gutted
01:36for his players gutted john harbaugh didn't say he was gutted john harbaugh said well i went into the
01:42team and i said well it's not it's much better than a loss it's not as good as a win
01:47yeah yeah i'm not as
01:49happy as i would be if we won and i'm not as sad as we we could lose so they
01:53were down 14 in the
01:54fourth quarter they had the great comeback they were in position to win the game we'll talk about
01:59that and they were not in position to lose the game they had the game lost and the commanders botched
02:07it so to me considering everything that went down for you know 60 minutes plus the 10 minute overtime
02:15um a a draw a tie is fitting and probably fortunate for the giants and i think that's what's so
02:24frustrating about it because you i i guess you call this a good draw then in the words of uh
02:30you know
02:30on the john harbaugh and your son we're going to be talking about soccer unfortunately they don't get
02:35the one point to the standings um like they do in the premier league but when you talk about battling
02:42back so down two possessions in the second half they battled back they showed grit they showed merit
02:48um you had a chance to to win it in overtime but then you gave it up so then you
02:55you get you put the
02:56ball one it was a missed field goal two you put the football on the ground in field goal range
03:01so
03:02that's gutting but then you see the defense hold up and make a stand again uh more of a blunder
03:08on the
03:09the the the commanders part of things but for the for another week in the for the third week in
03:15the
03:15row you see the defense make a stand and and get a stop get what they needed so it's like
03:20an emotional
03:21roller coaster ride on how to walk away how to feel walking away from this game but yes i guess
03:29you got
03:29to keep it even keeled it's not a loss it's not a win but i like the way this team
03:34is showing that
03:37they don't lose they know they know how to come back and be competitive in football games they don't
03:43lose these football games but the biggest storyline i feel like we have to talk about
03:48right now when it comes to this giants football team paul i mean james goes 33 for 54 326
03:54three touchdowns uh didn't have the int but he gave up the fumble it's not even a passing game
04:00we'll talk about likely and malik neighbors with their millions of targets that they got
04:04wide receivers dream but i think we need to talk about this run game because if this is going to
04:09be the identity of your football team cam scadaboo 13 carries 59 yards no touchdown lost the fumble at
04:18the end james winston was the second leading rusher for this football team and you have three capable
04:25running backs on this team and you had the ball on the on the ground towards the end i mean
04:32you again
04:33that's another that's a part of the roller coaster ride there it does this giants running back room
04:40does it scare you or does it motivate you i guess that's that's the question five games into the
04:46season well it doesn't excite me there's no question it doesn't excite me there's no game breaker you
04:52know motor signal the terry can't get a uniform naji harris is just a grinder who's coming back off an
04:57achilles you know um um tyrone tracy had a rough summer and uh lost a fumble you know had a
05:04fumble
05:05earlier this season and he's just getting back in the good graces and trust of the coaching staff
05:10slowly you know slowly and cam scadaboo has to be the bell cow um cam scadaboo had what he had
05:17um
05:18what 50 um 59 you know guards rushing guards 13 rushing attempts i mean this game was completely
05:26topsy-turvy right you went into this game saying what it's going to be raining there's going to be a
05:31um residual effects of a hurricane you're going to have to run the ball right protect jamis and run the
05:37ball and then they go through the first half they can't run it worth a darn i talked to john
05:41runyon jr
05:42after the game he said yeah we couldn't we just couldn't move them we couldn't get anything done
05:46they'd fall behind and it becomes a drop back shotgun pass happy exactly what you don't want
05:54in those weather conditions and wouldn't you know it jamis played great three touchdown passes he was
05:59blitzed um he he was 12 for 15 for 113 yards and two touchdowns against the blitz okay in the
06:08second
06:09half and he had 15 completions against the blitz that's the most in any game of his career and he
06:15went
06:15into this game as i think next to last in the league as far as handling the blitz and and
06:21you
06:21know completing pass against the blitz so kudos to jamis for that no question about that but um well
06:27one thing i have to push back with you uh on you brandon is i don't give the giants defense
06:33credit for
06:33making a stop at the end of the game i mean they let them march not let them but the
06:38commanders march
06:39right down the field they got within field goal range of a 42 yard field goal and then they screwed
06:46up because you know and i i'll ask you what you thought about that last thing but i i just
06:50don't
06:50think that's not a stop that's a like you know dj reader said you know you you you you go
06:57you try to
06:58be a good person you go home you say your prayers at night sometimes you're rewarded you know everybody
07:03you know uh thank you lord thank you lord thank you lord that was what jamis said i mean
07:09you can't run out the clock 50 seconds to go and have jayden daniels take a snap
07:15and not know either not know how many timeouts he has i don't think he knew how many timeouts he
07:21has
07:21now dan quinn fell on the sword nobody told jayden gales you can't he has to get the snap he
07:28was
07:28looking to his left to his tight end cavon picked him up he's got to take the ball and just
07:33spike it
07:34throw it out of bounds and then you kick the game winning field goal so um you know i know
07:38dan quinn
07:39said well i shouldn't have put him in that position we shouldn't have thrown the ball
07:42uh we should with no timeouts that's probably true you have to trust jayden daniels to have
07:47enough time to get it can't get sacked throw it um it's incredible i mean it's incredible what's
07:52going on in this league and this division with coaches just making horrible late game decisions
07:59just to touch on the run game real quick the giants they got to find a way to get an
08:03explosive bat
08:04one of these guys have to emerge as a guy that if this is going to be your identity we
08:08can't be
08:08pushing the football down the field throwing the ball 50 something times one of you guys have to
08:13has to give us a chunk play whether they're off the screen whether it's off an extension of some
08:19sort of one somebody's got to step up in that running back room and i'm anxious to see what
08:25naggy does to get these guys going forward now let's go back to the coaching blunder because do you look
08:31at it when you're looking at the coaches and you're you're ranking them in terms of resume pedigree
08:39and just overall je ne sais quoi do you look at that blunder do you credit that to the harbaugh
08:48effect
08:48or was that more of a dan quinn washington commander's mess up does that luck come with
08:57signing john harbaugh and making him your head coach well i mean you know if one of his superpowers is
09:04making other people stupid then then make you know i know i mean look what you do is you keep
09:10your team as buttoned up as possible right giants made a ton of mistakes in the game but i think
09:15they're
09:15a buttoned up operation and look john harbaugh went for two points two point conversion in the
09:20first half right uh last week and he said yeah i probably shouldn't have done that you know what i
09:24mean so he takes ownership of that um it's it's remarkable i mean i mean dan quinn you know they
09:32they lost the game there's no question about that with with you know now maybe the guy misses the field
09:37goal but he probably doesn't look what happened in london in um in tottenham right you know of course
09:43as we know brandon nothing good happens in tottenham right nothing good happens in top you know ever so
09:51we can agree on that we can agree on that right yeah nothing good happens in time and so you
09:56know
09:56all nick sirianni has to do is after they go ahead with a full field goal with eight seconds to
10:04go is
10:05tell his kicker jake elliott who just made the field goal kick the ball out of the end out of
10:10the end zone right you get a touchback you get the ball they get the ball in the 35 yard
10:15line
10:15with no timeouts and you just defend one play and the game is over you never let them have a
10:21return
10:21and he tells them to kick it into the landing zone and they get a 50 something yard return
10:28get tackled with one second to go and the kid makes a 57 yard field goal i mean it's an
10:33all-timer
10:33so and nick sirianni said after the game it's on me it's on me um a couple of weeks ago
10:40brian
10:40schottenheimer completely mismanaged and over coached dak prescott in the loss in rio i mean these
10:47these got these division teams can't win overseas in rio um leaving too much time telling dak prescott
10:54the wrong information leaving too much time and they lose on a late field goal from the ravens you know
11:00so the giants have the best coach in the league i know sirianni has a has a super bowl ring
11:05i get
11:05that in a much less time than john harborough has one super bowl ring but giants have a one and
11:11a
11:11half game leading the division it's way too early to start marking all these things but they have it
11:16and um you know maybe they can ride their head coach a little bit to not make stupid mistakes
11:22and maybe some of these other teams will make some of these mistakes it'll help the giants it's
11:26already helped them and that's why i call it the hardball effect because we saw them working
11:30situation after situation after situation down in training camp i think there's all the reports
11:35anyone who watched training camp you could watch and be like this wasn't that sexy of a training camp
11:41they didn't throw the football down the field much they wouldn't it wasn't any big hits or anything
11:46it was no oohs and ahs that we saw he was working situation after situation after situation because
11:51he said he had such a young team he had to get these guys ready now if this was the
11:56giants in the
11:57past and it's not throwing any head coach under the bus that they've had i think that mistake with
12:03that dan quinn and the commander's offensive has made i think the the previous giants could have made
12:10some sort of mistake to lose that football game or to or to to not win it not to have
12:18not to call
12:19or not to spike the ball throw that ball away i think if you reversed it and flipped it and
12:24the
12:25giants were in that same situation on offense between naggy and hardball that communication to
12:32get to a jamis winston which now gets into that huddle i think all 11 plus the coordinator and the
12:38head coach would have been on the same page in that situation so when we talk when i say hardball
12:44effect maybe it's not luck maybe you know i don't know what you call it but it's you're you're seeing
12:50him not make mistakes that other coaches in this division and around this league is making week in
13:00week out the two-point conversion i do it on madden all the time like that that happens that happens
13:05you
13:05know you're feeling it but something like that that's so costly at the end where everybody needs to
13:11be on the same page a john harbaugh can't walk into a post-game press conference and be like that's
13:16on me that's so he can't jump on that grenade because it's like wait a minute you 18 years
13:21the ravens you super bowl like what do you mean that's on you so that's well now you could i
13:28mean
13:28if for argument's sake i'm not arguing this but you could say what did harbaugh do wrong at the end
13:34when the giants were in position on the 24 yard line for a 42 yard field goal it was the
13:39two minute
13:39warning right yeah at that point he could have just said we don't have to hand the ball off again
13:44send dominic zavada out there have him kick a 42 yard field goal and we're going to win the game
13:51right now he had just missed a 46 yard field goal badly okay i think he would have had confidence
13:56for
13:56him to hit this field goal but to me parbo was thinking two things first of all let's get a
14:02little
14:02closer you know it it's a 42 yard field goal is fine a 35 yard field goal a 38 yard
14:09field goal is
14:09better right and also he was thinking there's two minutes to go if we miss the field goal now the
14:15commanders have time to go right down the field so let me take some of the clock off and let's
14:20make
14:20sure our kick is going to be a late you know kick to win win the game or not win
14:25the game so you know
14:26so what happens on the next play camp scataboo fumbles right so players as you know right you know
14:33you're the you were a player and your father is a coach players make the coach look smart or dumb
14:38so you know they you know they just do so camp scataboo so why are you handing the ball to
14:43him why
14:44you just kick the field goal i haven't heard a lot of that but it's you could argue that to
14:48me
14:48he's he's your rb1 you're telling him protect the ball protect the ball protect the ball now cam
14:54scataboo has to look in the mirror and say he admitted he had a 19 yard run a nine yard
15:00run and
15:01a five yard run you know in that last stretch after doing nothing so he said i've got to stay
15:07level-headed i got a little hyped up i started feeling myself a little bit so he at that position
15:14you he has to know he's a young veteran he's not a veteran he's a young guy but he has
15:21to know
15:22i can't fight for yards i ever get it protect it and go down and if it's a no gain
15:29it's a no gain
15:30i can't lose five yards and i can't be fighting for yards and lose the ball he was going down
15:35you
15:35know deron paine made a really good play in a ball but that's the league right now right everyone's
15:41making good plays on a ball they're punching it and they're kicking it in there they're swacking at
15:45it i mean that's what it is you don't tackle the guy you tackle the ball that's what it is
15:49now so
15:50and and one thing cam scared cam said is that i've never been the fumble guy you know what he
15:56has to look himself in the mirror and say i am the fumble guy that's my fourth fumble of the
16:01year
16:01now he said he only has three because he fumbled one out of bounds he just dropped it out of
16:05bounds
16:06officially it's four he's this is the first one he's lost tiki barber told me at some point his
16:12early in his career he was the fumble guy and jim fossil and then tom coughlin said to him i
16:18love you
16:18and i want you to play but i can't play you if you keep fumbling so he got to look
16:24himself in the
16:24mirror and say i am the fumble guy and how do i not be the fumble guy that's what cam
16:28has to do because
16:29it'll be really interesting this week who's running back one and you know are they giving him a full
16:35load or are they going to say you got to earn yourself again you know we'll see so you saw
16:39dan
16:39quinn jump on the grenade for jayden daniels that's where cam scadaboo or the player has to jump on the
16:45grenade for your head coach like you said you got to make me right right here i'm trying to do
16:49what's
16:49best for the team what's best for our defense bleed this clock out as much as possible you've got
16:56a commercial with state farm insurance i need to have that reassurance that you are going to hold on
17:04and protect this rock everybody with it you're one of 11 that's that's your only job so that's a
17:12situation where i feel as though the player because you know you see them go back and forth on the
17:16sideline from time to time on the broadcast you can you can see they love each other they respect each
17:21other but that's one of those moments to where if you're hardball and you're sitting there and let's
17:26say remember that third down where people scadaboo looked upset that he wasn't on the field for
17:31i forget what game it was maybe the titans they didn't get it this is one of those situations now
17:37hardballs looking at you your head coach can look at you like all right you're you don't have your
17:42stuff your stuff does stink just like anybody else everybody makes mistakes so that's why we're all in
17:48it together so teachable moment for everybody but so far five games into it whether it's the luck of
17:56the hardball or the the hardball effect things are happening for the giants this year as opposed
18:03against the giants i want to give a quick game ball out paul to i believe denar wilson
18:11deserves some sort of deep uh defensive game ball by the game that he coached i know he still gave
18:19up
18:1920 some points or whatnot but five sacks and you're out brian burns you had drew phillips coming off
18:26blitzing two sacks you got a dual carter involved i think trying to generate that pressure
18:33because remember they were supposed to be a rush four drop seven and the pass rush was supposed to
18:39get there type defense he has been able to simulate pressures and get pressures on the quarterback now
18:46by switching up the entire game philosophy and uh and and getting after the quarterback uh now the
18:53giants are are are supposed to host i can't say his kids name um linebacker he used to play at
19:00maryland i remember my dad coasting for one year at maryland in in guke in in guke uh what's the
19:07dn
19:07what's that edge rusher do you know is are those reports right about i'm not sure about that right
19:13okay all right because i'm wondering i'm wondering are they looking for more obviously looking for more
19:17pass rush help wanting to get it from a you know wanting to see maybe more off off of cave
19:22on or whatnot
19:23but i don't know well i guess we'll talk about that on thursday's show well that that probably means
19:28that chauncey goldston is you know he's got he's got an issue and he's probably oh yeah you know he
19:33might be done for the season or on some kind of an ir situation i would think he's getting second
19:38opinion so they probably have to fortify themselves there because chauncey goldston actually was playing
19:42quite well playing really well dual car played very well uh it it took me to our arvel reese led
19:49the
19:50team in tackles again and we've seen so remember how giants fans they wanted caleb downs right they wanted
19:56caleb downs arvel reese showed up caleb downs the cowboys came they wanted sunny styles they wanted
20:02sunny styles arvel reese showed up sunny styles down in washington kids as is tremaine ebbs as as is they
20:11got some really good pieces on this defense i'd like to see them take uh you know take another step
20:17but
20:17i got to give my game ball to uh denard wilson for the game that he called especially with getting
20:23after uh jayden daniel jayden daniels yeah now look there was there was way too much i mean john
20:29harbo was ticked off he said we can't give jayden daniels those running lanes you know what i mean
20:32you know yeah over 100 yards i mean this is a guy we said you know this game was so
20:37so upside down this
20:39is a guy who said he's not going to run as much he's going to try to protect himself he
20:42runs nine
20:42times for 103 yards and two long touchdown runs you know and and other times he really hurt them with
20:48their legs it was interesting because abdul carter said before the game leading into the game you
20:53know we want jayden to run you know we want to test him out see if he can run he
20:56was asked about that
20:58after the game yesterday and he said yeah i think he said he ran abdul carter he ran and somebody
21:03asked
21:03him about me and he goes he's fast you know there was one play where jayden daniels ran by arvel
21:10and arvel looked like he was running backwards and this is no knock on arvel no reason we know what
21:15what a punisher he is but jayden daniels is is like not sneaky fast he's just fast fast and you
21:21know that was that was you know they had to get that under wraps and he really didn't but um
21:27yes
21:28the past the pass rush was better and they certainly in the pocket jayden daniels did not feel so
21:34comfortable when he got out of the pocket he was big trouble he really was um like a little quick
21:39before
21:40you go on to your next remember that happened to brian burns remember when brian burns was like jayden
21:44daniels is fast when he hit the corner or him this kid kick and run kick and run sorry to
21:49cut you off
21:50there but okay arvel brian burns you felt the speed of jayden daniels oh no he can run we know
21:55that i
21:56mean look they're much they're a completely different team with him you know what i mean and um they should
22:02have won the game you know they ran the ball well uh they average what almost seven yards a carry
22:06you
22:06know the run defense now now a lot of it's inflated by janiel jayden daniels running but that's part of
22:11the run game um you know i i can't say the giants oh they got cheated they deserve to win
22:19and um they could have lost so like i said a tie is weird no one knows what to think
22:23of a tie but
22:24it increased the lead from one game to one and a half games in a division so on a week
22:29where the
22:30cowboys lost and the eagles lost and the commanders tied the giants gain on everybody so in a game where
22:35they're losing by 14 points with eight minutes to go you know they salvage a lot and i y'all
22:42go from
22:43talking about one quarterback to the next and that's why you have a jamis winston i think jamis
22:49has solidified his spot as the qb1 for x amount of time longer because i don't see another quarterback
22:57coming in stepping in down 14 down two possessions coming up and tying that football game the way he did
23:04the connection he had with malik neighbors malik did something about the commanders where malik
23:09neighbors gets all his targets against the washington commanders what was it like 18 his rookie year
23:15against them down in in washington now he got 20 uh i thought matt nagy did a great job moving
23:21him
23:21around in different spots in the slot i thought he ran some really good routes put some really good
23:27stuff on tape but then the isaiah likely connection we got to see that again love to see it now
23:34going forward paul i need to see more not so much from but to a mooney and malik high fields
23:43getting
23:43those guys involved even more and i know he tried to do it with with mooney but it just they
23:50weren't in
23:50they weren't in sync it just every ball that went his way was either behind overthrow or just he couldn't
23:58he couldn't utilize that speed the way that i i guess i want him to and the way that mooney
24:04probably
24:04want to because that's his job to be that darius slayton that speed guy within this offense so going
24:10forward would love to see another guy get involved a little bit more but at the end of the day
24:16i got
24:17to tip my hat to jamis he he shut he shut up a lot of people he shut up a
24:21lot of noise with with this
24:23play uh this game and you know i wanted him to get i wanted him to eat a w after
24:28that down in dc it's
24:30it's funny because you know he was playing so well in the second half that bringing jj mccarthy in for
24:35a few snaps you know the rpos he you know he threw the ball twice they were negated by penalties
24:40um you
24:40know short stuff uh you know ran at once got completely stood up uh by frankie move oh you know
24:46that was not a i mean you know the rpo was obvious you know i didn't love that play no
24:50but it almost
24:52seemed like an intrusion in the game you know what i mean that oh we're taking jamis off the field
24:57here
24:57for jj and and you know so fans have been thinking you know james can't cut it want to see
25:01jj want to
25:02see jj first of all you know jj mccarthy is more athletic and a better runner than jamis but i
25:09you know
25:09as someone told me in the building he's not like he's michael vick you know so so i don't
25:17we'll have to see about this package you know what i mean and maybe you can work in time you
25:21can't just run it or you know throw the quick wide receiver screen i i don't know um i just
25:26don't
25:27think he's that gifted of a runner where this is like tasem hill would come in remember it was you
25:31know jamis was on the saints where tasem hill would come in a lot but he was a dip you
25:35know he was like
25:36a power runner he was different he was a tight end it was and he could also throw the ball
25:40now
25:40obviously jj can throw the ball he's a quarterback um we'll just have to see how this is fine
25:45tuned you know what i mean because i think it's interesting to to put him on the field but
25:50the first look was not great you know what i mean it was not it was not great you know
25:54i i don't know
25:55i just it was like okay maybe we can put that on the shelf for a little bit i was
25:59one of those people
26:00remember i'm like give them package give them some rpos give them some stuff off of it but yeah you
26:05you kind of you have to run it in the first half because if you like it then you bring
26:09it back in the
26:10second half maybe on a third and three or some sort of third and short you can do more now
26:15i know
26:15that was a small sample size but but now i'm kind of like all right let's put that on the
26:22shelf unless
26:23you're getting absolutely nothing out of the run game in that first half which it kind of again
26:30they're still they're not breaking these runs you so you're looking for that edge or you're looking
26:34for that explosive play in the run game or two he's a lot more comfortable within the offense to
26:41where if you don't like something and you guys have identified it through the week you can check
26:47out of that and maybe just get some quick game out of that you know so not putting him in
26:53a situation
26:54to where it's like all right line up run it regardless would like to see him a little bit more
26:59comfortable going forward to where he can make some sort of check simple check simple kill kill
27:04kill at the line of scrimmage that way he can kind of make a defense pay if they load up
27:09that box
27:10because until you show he can throw or feels comfortable throwing in this offense um that's
27:15exactly what they're going to do but something to look forward to going forward because i think the
27:19commanders did a great job playing it now can the saints do it though can the texans do it though
27:23whoever they play after that can they can they hold up against that uh final final thought
27:29paul because we got the three one-in-one first place giants um playing this this sunday uh against
27:37the saints at home which should be a really good football game but if someone would have told you
27:44they were three one-in-one going into this saints game you would have said what i'll take it and
27:50i
27:50would have said tell me about that tie tell me explain to me about that tie because look it's a
27:56weird
27:56thing you know we have to go through the whole season now they're three one-in-one maybe next
28:00week there'll be four one-in-one or three two-in-one it just it's not visually appealing to you
28:08know to
28:08see that that one or to say it you know i mean it's odd you know what's your record you're
28:12five and two
28:13you're not four one and one it just it's just it's it's a weird it's a weird feel um but
28:20it beat the
28:22alternative look in the first half they were terrible and i did not think they would win or
28:26tie the game in the second fourth quarter the way they were you know uh you know but you have
28:31to look
28:31at the commanders they're not a great team they did have january jayden daniels back and they were
28:35home there were a lot of giants fans there john harbour noticed that it was loud near the end of
28:40the
28:40game where the giants were coming back there was a lot of blue on that left side of the um
28:44of the
28:45stadium you know behind the giants bench so that was a good sign um but you know the giants have
28:49positioned themselves nicely they have to figure out the running back they have to you know keep
28:54moving forward with jamis um you know deal with injuries deal with all these other things i just
29:00think um um with this coaching staff i trust them each week to kind of put a plan together to
29:06adjust
29:07the plan if they need to and to move forward not that they're miracle workers you know not that they
29:12don't need a little luck or anything like that but that they will they will the coaching staff will do
29:18things to help win the game not that it assures them of winning and the coaching staff more
29:22importantly will not do anything to screw up the game and sometimes if you don't screw up the game
29:27you're ahead of your opponent i'm with you i'm with you all right let's keep it keep it keep it
29:34rolling i i mean look three wins already this is we don't get three we're used to not getting three
29:39wins in a season or only getting three or four wins in the season we got them in the first
29:44five weeks
29:44uh love for the giants keep thing rolling thanks for everybody who came out to the watch party
29:49at bourbon street in bayside queens we had a good time there uh as well but you know let's get
29:55that
