Mother of four Ornella Charles Duncan is tonight pleading for the placement of pavements and speed bumps near schools in Mason Hall, Tobago, after her 15 year old daughter, a student of the Mason Hall Secondary School, was knocked down by a maxi taxi attached to the school, on Thursday afternoon.
During the unfortunate turn of events her daughter flipped into the air upon impact and fell into a drain.
The child now has a swelling in her brain. More in this Elizabeth Williams report.
00:00The maxi knock her, it flipped her into the drain and she was stuck below the drain.
00:05Thank God for passers-by and neighbors that they got her out of the drain and that they called me and we got her to the hospital.
00:13The 15-year-old Form 3 student was walking home from school when the accident occurred and suffered multiple injuries.
00:21There was damage to her reading glasses, her school uniform and some school items.
00:26How is she feeling?
00:28She is in a lot of pain. She has a lot of pain in her head because she hit her head on the sidewalk, on the curb before going down into the drain.
00:39So she has a lot of head pain. Her glasses are destroyed so she can't see properly right now.
00:45Her skin, her leg is damaged. It digs up and bruises up. Her uniform has been destroyed because of the fall.
00:53One of her shoes missing. Everything that was in her bag has been destroyed because of the water in the drain.
01:01Right? Currently she is at home resting after being in the hospital for approximately 10 hours.
01:07The concerned mother said she was told by hospital medical staff her daughter would need further medical care.
01:15What the hospital told you?
01:18The hospital told me that they did x-rays, they did CT scans and they did ultrasounds.
01:24And the CT scans said that her brain is swollen and they're seeing a mask in her brain that she needs to go to a pediatric clinic for.
01:34She is tonight pleading for pavements and speed bumps to be constructed around the schools in the Mason Hall area.
01:41I'm asking the authorities to consider putting sidewalks because in Mason Hall they have a lot of schools, preschools, primary schools, secondary schools.
01:54I'm asking that they put speed bumps and those amber lights so that drivers will know to slow down.
02:00And for them to pay in the road and say, you know, slow down, school's ahead.
02:03Because I don't want this to happen to no other child, for no other parent to feel this way.
