But overall, it was a very traumatizing experience, reason being because obviously I've never
00:06
experienced something like this before, seeing the amount of rain, hearing the winds, seeing
00:11
things falling and stuff like that, it was very traumatizing, and seeing the other parishes
00:17
of Jamaica, like totally devastated, having friends that, when the hurricane even passed,
00:24
I had friends who wasn't even in contact, but didn't hear from their family from since
00:29
the Sunday or the Monday, before the hurricane, and would have only gotten word from somebody
00:37
else, not even direct contact, probably like a day or two ago.
00:41
So yeah, it was very traumatizing.
00:43
The voice of Esther James, a Tobago student studying medicine at UWE Mona Campus, the Tobago
00:50
rep for the Trinidad and Tobago Student Association at the UWE Mona Campus, Jamaica, told the TV6
00:58
news, many students wanted to come home, but could not, because when they arrived at the
01:04
airport in Jamaica before the hurricane, they were told they had to pay for their flights.
01:09
Many who could not afford it left the airport in tears.
01:14
Some persons, when they reached to the airport, turned back because they realized they had
01:19
to pay for the flight, and they didn't have the money for that. Tickets were from $530 U.S.,
01:27
some persons' tickets.
01:29
Despite her present circumstance, Ms. Alfred told TV6 News she has been assisting in relief
01:36
efforts in Jamaica, and remains thankful for the intervention of Chief Secretary Farley
01:41
Augustine, who called via Zoom to ensure Tobago students were being properly cared for in
01:48
Jamaica.
01:48
During and after the hurricane, I lost contact with everything. No cell service, no electricity,
01:56
no Wi-Fi, no data, nothing. So at least two days, and came back to Kingston to help with
02:05
distribution of cool food items. And before that, the Chief Sec was also helping with distributing,
02:13
well, getting food items to the Tobago Neon students, collabing with the High Commission
02:21
of Trinidad and Tobago. As of right now, he also sent someone here in Jamaica who is lazing
02:28
with me to get care packages to those students across Jamaica.
