00:00Hello?
00:12Hello, Retta. Do you still like scary houses?
00:16Hell no, homie.
00:21Boop!
00:25Yikes.
00:27Nope.
00:30Retta?
00:34Retta?
00:38Retta?
00:40Oh, s***.
00:46Houses that go bump in the night.
00:48Creepy quarters.
00:50Devilish domiciles.
00:52And of course, me.
00:54Again.
00:56I'm done with the attic!
00:58It's the most frightful time of the year.
01:00And I'm traveling across the country in search of the 15 scariest homes we could find.
01:06This channel is where they would pump the blood and wash it out.
01:10Sure, sure, sure. You can cover it.
01:12We've already seen the eeriest in the east.
01:14I guess we're going into the jail next.
01:16Going into the jail next.
01:18I thought I was inhaling tetanus.
01:21And the most haunted in the heartland.
01:23Within the home, there's exactly 10 people that died.
01:26What the going on in here?
01:29And the spookiest of Appalachia.
01:31You guys are in the cemetery.
01:34Your kids see dead people.
01:36What is happening?
01:38Monsters of the Midwest, here we come.
01:41Nothing for you!
01:43The Midwest is a special combination of gorgeous lakes, quaint towns, and sprawling farmland.
01:52But where there is beauty, there are beasts.
01:55And my first stop is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
02:00Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
02:02It looks like a classic Midwest city on the surface.
02:06But Brew City has got a dark side.
02:09So I'm not the least bit surprised that my search for the scariest house in America has lured me here to meet Don.
02:17And see if his house lives up to the city's spooky rep.
02:22And I gotta say, it doesn't look like a house.
02:29Looks like an old factory?
02:33I don't know.
02:41Hi Don.
02:42How are you?
02:43I'm good, how are you?
02:44Well, I'm just happy to meet you.
02:46Nice to meet you.
02:47Finally.
02:48Welcome to my home.
02:49What was this building?
02:50This was the Milwaukee Electric Rail and Light Company.
02:56Oh God, I'm nervous.
02:57Shall we take a look?
02:59Yes.
03:00Wonderful.
03:01Oh.
03:02Here in Milwaukee, I found a unique property that just reeked of, you can do something with this.
03:10The original building had to be strong enough to hold tons of transformers.
03:14So there was nothing.
03:15It was just an empty shell.
03:18Pretty early after we purchased it, I walked through and I thought, it's creepy.
03:22It's a giant industrial building with sharp edges.
03:26The hallways are so devoid of light that they kind of feel like they're leading into a black hole.
03:31Yeah, you might get hurt.
03:32Yeah.
03:33You know, be aware.
03:34Yes.
03:37Some people said I was nuts.
03:39And I'm like, I know.
03:45The first thing to greet me is the smell of gasoline.
03:48Uh, Doug, this feels dangerous.
03:54What is happening?
03:55Well, I took a lawnmower and did some work with it.
03:59And that's why there's probably a trace of it.
04:02And it's now back outside.
04:04It's very industrial.
04:06Humble, warm.
04:07I'm sorry, did you say warm?
04:10It does not look like a livable space.
04:13At all.
04:15This was an empty shell when I got it.
04:17Oh, really?
04:18None of these walls were here.
04:19Really?
04:20Nothing.
04:21You put up these walls?
04:22Yeah.
04:23Yourself?
04:24Not just a pretty face.
04:26Okay.
04:27Where are we off to next?
04:28All right.
04:29Shall we explore a hallway?
04:30Let's go there.
04:31Yes.
04:32Let's go this way.
04:35It's dark.
04:36It's dark.
04:37This is my playground.
04:45This sort of represents everything you need to have in order to buy a building like this and then fix it.
04:53Do you remember what you have?
04:54Not at all.
04:56It's like, I know I had it here, you know.
04:59All of these hallways are 90 feet long.
05:01And all these hallways are filled with things.
05:06Things.
05:08There's tools, kits.
05:11It looks like there's a lot of kill rooms.
05:14I feel like every step I take, I'm expecting a jump scare.
05:18I was told time and time again, are you nuts?
05:23Yeah.
05:24Are you nuts?
05:25I'm a little curious.
05:26One day a woman pulled up outside and she got out of the car a little pensively and looked at it like this and then looked at me and said,
05:35So, do you kill me out here or do you kill me inside?
05:40I said, I haven't made up my mind yet.
05:43Good gosh.
05:44I mean.
05:45So that it has it, it has that feeling to some people.
05:48Right.
05:49That they might be a little tentative for coming in.
05:50Right.
05:51Because they don't know what's in it.
05:53I mean, I just thought it was like a, some kind of factory.
05:58This whole floor feels like the garage.
06:01Bingo.
06:02Particularly because of the gas fumes.
06:05The guests love it down here.
06:06I'm still smelling it, Don.
06:07I'm still smelling it.
06:08Still smelling it.
06:09We're moving out of here then.
06:10Let me show you the upstairs.
06:17Look at this.
06:18It's an indoor yard.
06:19We're entering my front porch.
06:21Yeah, we are.
06:24You go upstairs, you're like, oh, there's a house in here.
06:27It's got a front door, windows, siding.
06:30It's like when you build a ship in a bottle.
06:32You built a house in a warehouse.
06:35Let's go check out the inside.
06:37Inside.
06:39Welcome to my happy home.
06:42What the hell?
06:44Where did the factory go?
06:46It's a home.
06:47It's got bright walls.
06:49It has hardwood floors.
06:51Bedroom all open.
06:53It's plenty of room.
06:54That's for sure.
06:55It has a cute little kitchen.
06:58Look at that.
07:00You know how in movies where they kidnap somebody and they try to make them feel like, oh, this is your home, but you're in a dungeon.
07:08But the room looks just like your room at home.
07:10I wouldn't be surprised if he put this house on the market and it was bought by a serial killer.
07:20Oh, boy.
07:22And this is what the entire place was like initially.
07:26This house is a monstrosity.
07:28It is.
07:29I mean, you could build a whole other house on this side.
07:32You could.
07:33My gosh.
07:35I'm impressed.
07:36Well, I'm impressed.
07:37I'm flattered that you're impressed.
07:38I'm impressed.
07:39I like it.
07:41I use this table for trying to get moving in the morning.
07:46What is it?
07:48It's instead of a yoga mat way down there on the floor.
07:51Because I don't want to go down there to the floor.
07:52Your raised yoga mat.
07:53My raised yoga mat.
07:55Yeah.
07:56What is this?
07:57So this.
08:02So when I want to have, this just brings this breeze in.
08:06You gotta love a rig.
08:07See?
08:09I want to say thank you for showing me your home.
08:12If you move on to the next round, you'll be that much closer to a renovation by Allison Victoria.
08:18Oh.
08:19I'm going to make my way back through the house.
08:22Across the porch.
08:24I'm just trying to remember how to get out of here.
08:25I'll draw you a map.
08:27Have a good one.
08:30Ah, fresh air.
08:32So that was the warehouse, as in W-H-E-R-E.
08:35Where is the house?
08:37Oh, it's inside the warehouse.
08:38Noted.
08:40Appearance.
08:42The first floor is a grotesque garage straight out of a horror movie, while the second floor looks like a house in a warehouse.
08:49Un-liveability.
08:50Un-liveability.
08:51Listen, it's livable, except you have to navigate your way through a maze of kill rooms anytime you go downstairs.
08:59Fright factor is, were he ever to kidnap somebody, they'd think they were living in a house and they'd try to escape, and they're stuck in a warehouse.
09:09Speechless.
09:10I don't know what to say.
09:14Do I need to do a wrap-up once I exit the other door?
09:20The hunt for scary continues as we venture deep into America's Corn Belt, to a town called Sheffield, Illinois.
09:28If there's a spooky Hall of Fame, Illinois would definitely be in it.
09:33I mean, this is where Mike Myers chased terrified teenagers all over the state.
09:43Wait, you guys.
09:44This is Jason.
09:46It's Friday the 13th.
09:51Anyway, I'm here to meet Brett and Campton.
09:57It's a little spooky.
10:08Good afternoon.
10:10Hello.
10:11I'm Campton.
10:12Hi, Campton. How are you?
10:13This is my husband, Brett.
10:14I'm Brett.
10:15Brett, how are you?
10:16Good.
10:17Gentlemen.
10:18Yes, ma'am.
10:20Oh.
10:22It's Mrs. Boynton. She didn't like the door open.
10:24Mrs. who?
10:25Boynton.
10:26Boynton?
10:27She's one of the two women who died in the house.
10:31It was a funeral home for over five decades.
10:33The last funeral was in 2022.
10:36Oh, great.
10:39Here we go.
10:49My name is Brett.
10:50This is my husband, Canton.
10:51We live here in Sheffield, Illinois, and our Queen Anne Victorian.
10:54That was a former funeral home.
10:55We bought the house because of what it looked like.
10:58The listing mentioned nothing about being a funeral home.
11:00George W. Boyden built the house in 1870.
11:04Both of his wives died in the house.
11:06Whether it's because it was a funeral home or just because of its first owner, there's definitely something here.
11:11Oh, let's come right out and say it.
11:12Ghost.
11:16Please, come in.
11:20Welcome to the foyer.
11:22It's a vibe.
11:24I'm assuming this has had some upgrades since.
11:27Yeah, it's had a couple.
11:28It's had a couple of facelifts over the years.
11:29It puts central air in to keep the bodies cool.
11:32Oh, boy.
11:33We're sticking with this theme.
11:35At the podium, you can sign the guest book if you'd like.
11:37Oh, you guys still have it up.
11:39How about send it to another funeral home?
11:43I'd like to invite you into the ghost parlor.
11:45Oh.
11:48If you want to go sit in that chair over there, I'll tell you all about it.
11:51I'm not going to sit in it.
11:53That's where our dog likes to growl because she sends his ghost.
11:59Viewings would have been in front of that window.
12:01Right.
12:02And then that is the original coffin stand.
12:06These are the original drapes from the funeral home as well.
12:08Really?
12:09And the carpet.
12:11Yeah, they're on my list to go.
12:15Okay, well, what are we going to look at next?
12:17We're going to go through that doorway over there to the original kitchen.
12:19It's a very narrow doorway.
12:20Yes.
12:25I feel like you guys tried to scare me with this guy.
12:29Every old house needs a butler.
12:31He better not move.
12:38This is the kitchen?
12:39Yeah, this is the kitchen.
12:40Do you guys eat?
12:41So when they remodeled, they decided to take the kitchen and move it upstairs.
12:45So you'd like to bring the kitchen back down here?
12:48Yes.
12:49You can go to the basement from here.
12:50Feel free to open that door and take a look.
12:59Watch your head as you go down.
13:00Oh, no.
13:05Nope.
13:06Oh, my God.
13:07I'm going to close this up.
13:08So, wait.
13:09This is the basement door.
13:10This is a closet?
13:11Yeah, a pantry.
13:12It's safe.
13:14Because I'm done being scared of this show.
13:16I'm done.
13:17It's a safe harbor.
13:19Oh, Jesus.
13:23Are you sure you want to do that?
13:27Oh, my gosh.
13:28And here's your trick.
13:33I refuse to be scared.
13:34I am on alert.
13:40Okay, where to next?
13:41We're going to head upstairs.
13:43Door on the right.
13:44The end of the hall.
13:45I'm nervous.
13:51Wow.
13:53I call this the communications room.
13:55Oh, boy.
13:56Him and his mom were up in this room.
13:58Our first night here.
13:59And they called,
14:00Cam, come up here.
14:01The lights are flickering.
14:02There's something wrong.
14:03The lights were being flashed,
14:04like somebody was trying to send Morse code.
14:06I said, listen,
14:08I don't mind if you're here,
14:09as long as you're friendly.
14:11And if you're not,
14:12I'm going to kick your ass out.
14:14You have to talk to the ghost.
14:15If you ask them nicely,
14:17they will stop.
14:19Not haunting,
14:20but harassing.
14:21The bathroom is exceptional.
14:23Yes.
14:29So it's connected to a room, though,
14:31because it's a, what are they called?
14:32Jack and Jill.
14:33Jack and Jill?
14:34Yeah.
14:35It's a tight Jack and Jill.
14:36What is this?
14:37It's an old Formica board.
14:39Yeah.
14:40This is the only shower in the house.
14:42I spent two hours scrubbing that tub when we moved in,
14:45because, okay, someone tried to dissolve a body in it.
14:47I think they may have.
14:48I kind of feel like you're in the bathroom at the Bates Motel.
14:51It's not my favorite.
14:53It's not comfy.
14:54It's not attractive.
14:56It was really creepy.
14:58Was Formica invented in the 70s?
15:01And that was, like, the fancy one.
15:03Creepola.
15:04We're going to go upstairs again.
15:06Oh, God.
15:07Another floor.
15:08Good gracious.
15:10Another rocking chair to your left.
15:12That was here when we moved in.
15:13This is scary up here.
15:15Oh, it gets better.
15:16It gets better.
15:17It's the blue room.
15:25What's on the floor?
15:26Dead flies.
15:27Dead flies.
15:28That's where flies come to die.
15:30Yikes.
15:34Gentlemen, you are one of three semifinalists in the Monsters of the Midwest region.
15:39I'm going to wish you luck.
15:41I'm going to make my way down those steps.
15:43So I'm going to ask you to wish me luck.
15:50Just left the mortician's manor.
15:52Appearance-wise, it looks like a funeral home that people live in.
15:56It's got parlors for grieving, industrial carpeting everywhere.
16:00And they have a ghost.
16:02So there's that.
16:04Unlivability, there's a torn down kitchen with a creepy basement.
16:08And an even creepier talking head.
16:12What is that about?
16:13The Fright Factor.
16:15The fly room?
16:16That's going to be a hard no for me.
16:18You're going to need some bug spray.
16:22The Monsters of the Midwest tour continues.
16:25Bringing my search for scary to Monmouth, Illinois.
16:29This is Monmouth, Illinois.
16:31Home to a road so spooky, the locals have named it Dead Man's Curve.
16:38It has a sharp bend and a tree in the middle.
16:41A tree set to move without any wind.
16:46Okay.
16:47Anyway, I'm here to meet Crystal and her son, Mike.
16:51And see if they have the scariest house in America.
16:54It looks like a fairytale house, like something in a picture book.
17:01Hi!
17:02Hi, Rhett.
17:03Hi.
17:04Hi, how are you?
17:05I'm good, how are you?
17:06I'm Crystal.
17:07Nice to meet you, Mike.
17:08Hi, Mike.
17:09I'm Crystal.
17:10And this is my son, Mike.
17:11And we're in Monmouth, Illinois.
17:14So I ended up buying this house because I knew it was exactly what I was looking for.
17:17A little spooky, but beautiful at the same time.
17:21We love the spook.
17:23So we have many spirits and we see ghost kitties.
17:27We hear people running up and down stairs.
17:30Growls.
17:31We come up with bruises.
17:32We can't explain how we got them.
17:33I'm creeped out in here all the time.
17:35We got the haunted house we asked for.
17:37Yeah.
17:41Oh, boy.
17:42This is actually my oddities room.
17:44So I have lots of different kind of antiques and oddities that I like to collect.
17:48Ooh.
17:51That snake's actually from the 60s.
17:54I love it.
17:55I'm sorry.
17:58Is that a coffin?
17:59It is a child's viewing casket from the 1800s, actually.
18:04Seriously?
18:10Is that a coffin?
18:12Yes.
18:15Okay.
18:16What is that box?
18:17That keeps little potion and spell jars in there.
18:20Are you a witch?
18:22Maybe.
18:24Okay.
18:25Girl, you a witch.
18:29Coffee and tea bar.
18:31My kind of spot.
18:32Mm-hmm.
18:34This is actually the room that I was walking through here and I actually got growled at in the corner.
18:40Growled at by an inhabitant?
18:44I'm gonna guess so.
18:45Yeah.
18:46There was no dogs in here.
18:47Huh.
18:48I mean, she likes animals.
18:50It's okay to get growled at by a ghost dog.
18:54Are you familiar with uranium glass at all?
18:57From the depression?
18:58I don't think so.
18:59They were making dishes out of uranium back then so people could afford it.
19:04That can't be safe.
19:05No.
19:06I have never.
19:08There's no way they thought uranium was safe.
19:11Why would they make dishes out of it?
19:14There's no way the people in the factory weren't, like, eyes drooping, you know, drooling a little bit.
19:21So where are we headed next?
19:22We're gonna head right over to the kitchen.
19:24And you have zero counter space.
19:27You noticed!
19:29There's also zero cabinets.
19:32Who inhabits this here space?
19:35Many, many. People and cats.
19:38Really?
19:39Yes.
19:40I'll be sitting or standing in here cooking and I'll feel a cat, like, brush against my leg.
19:45And I look around, no cats to be seen.
19:47No cats.
19:48Anywhere.
19:50And you just keep cooking?
19:51You are a bold bunch.
19:54We're gonna go upstairs.
19:56So at the bottom of the stairs here, we're gonna stop and I'm gonna show you a little door we got going on.
20:02You're welcome to open it, if you would like, but Frank lives in there.
20:07Who's Frank?
20:08I think Frank is the one that scratches me sometimes, but...
20:11Really?
20:12That's yet to be seen.
20:13Frank, I'm only here for a little bit.
20:15Okay, let's go out.
20:16All right.
20:17Okay.
20:18This is my bedroom.
20:19It is.
20:20I was actually laying in here and I have a whole third floor upstairs, but there's nothing up there.
20:30Mm-hmm.
20:31And there was a ball rolling right over my head.
20:35Rolling ball.
20:36There's always a rolling ball.
20:37Mm-hmm.
20:39So, next step is...
20:40The upstairs third floor.
20:42This does not look inviting.
20:45So this is where the ball was rolling across the floor.
20:48So this is a space I would really like to use.
20:51However, you can see the state that it's in.
20:54Yeah.
20:55Huh.
20:57Interesting.
20:58Well, I'm gonna wish you luck.
21:00Thank you so much.
21:01Is there another way out that I don't have to pass the casket?
21:06Yes.
21:07All right, then I'm gonna make my way out.
21:08Let's do that.
21:13That's the dead kitty condo.
21:15It looks like the home of a person who likes living with spirits.
21:20If you keep a relic room with a casket in it, spirits will be there.
21:27Livability?
21:28I mean, if that's your bag, this place is great.
21:34Fright factor.
21:35There's a casket in the entryway.
21:38And so the Midwest has three terrifying contenders that would make anyone sleep with one eye open.
21:47But only one house can move on for a chance to that home renovation by Allison Victoria.
21:55Monsters of the Midwest, you are as frightening as you were beastly.
21:59And while all three contenders were epically eerie.
22:02Oh, lordy.
22:04What the hell?
22:06Only one house can move on to the finals.
22:08Trick or treat.
22:09It's between a horrifying warehouse that makes you wonder where the house is.
22:14That bad's a little bit scary.
22:15There you go, there you go.
22:16It's dark.
22:17It's dark.
22:18This house is a monstrosity.
22:20A former funeral parlor with a heinous fly trap.
22:24What's on the floor?
22:25Dead flies.
22:27Dead flies.
22:29And a creepy home dedicated to the dead with cat scratch fever.
22:33You're welcome to open it, but Frank lives in there.
22:37Who's Frank?
22:38Frank is the one that scratches me sometimes.
22:40I'm sorry.
22:42It's a bumpy ride, but it's my favorite part of the show.
22:45Because guess what?
22:46I get to tell a lucky homeowner.
22:48They have the scariest house in their region.
23:05Crystal and Mike.
23:08Hi.
23:09Did you miss me?
23:10Of course.
23:11Yes, very much.
23:12You have the scariest house in the monsters of the Midwest region.
23:17Oh my gosh.
23:19So you're one step closer.
23:22And if you get another step closer, you get that rhino.
23:26Let's make this happen.
23:29Well done, dead kitty condo.
23:31Your grave appearance and feline phantoms gave you the edge.
23:35But are you scary enough to take it all?
23:37There's still more scary houses to see.
23:40Hey.
23:45You wonder why you got ghosts?
23:47Straight ahead is our embalming room.
23:50Why?
23:51Look at it.
23:52That means there's a spirit here.
23:53No!
23:54All right, we're good.
23:55We're seeing it.
23:56We're good.
