00:19Just getting ready for my first day back to work.
00:23I can't believe how much has changed in this past year.
00:30Brett and I decided to move to Utah.
00:33And then we started building our dream home.
00:35New construction, ground up, and then in the middle of it all,
00:40we got the best news.
00:43You're going to have a little brother or a little sister,
00:45a little baby in our house.
00:47Yeah.
00:48I used to have her in my house.
00:50Uh-huh.
00:51I spent eight months flying back and forth from California to Utah
00:55to manage the construction of our new home,
00:58all while super pregnant.
00:59The baby is growing faster than the house is being finished.
01:02And that is not a good thing.
01:04Just as we were about to move in and starting to find our rhythm,
01:08the biggest one came when I went into labor four weeks early
01:12on the side of the road.
01:13What are you looking at?
01:18Leaving California also meant leaving a business
01:20that I spent 12 years building.
01:22First time up the stairs.
01:23Here she goes.
01:24And here I am.
01:26Now I'm here in Utah starting my design and construction business
01:29from scratch, all while getting my family set up in a new city.
01:34Mom's got to go to work.
01:36Can you believe it?
01:37Uh-huh.
01:38She's scared.
01:39Don't cry, Darla.
01:40I'm going to do a client meeting in a while.
01:42First client meeting in Utah.
01:43I know.
01:44All right.
01:45It's the beginning of a new era.
01:47Okay.
01:48Good luck.
01:49See ya.
01:50Rawr.
01:51Bye, mama.
01:52Aw.
01:53This move has been hard.
02:05Once you tell a four and a half year old that you're moving to a new state,
02:09there's no plan B, there's no backup.
02:12This is it.
02:14Charlene and Ofa were some of the first people to call when I announced that I was moving to Utah.
02:20How long have we been married?
02:2218 years.
02:23Gordon, 18.
02:24Now we have three kids, two girls and one boy.
02:28They purchased this house from Charlene's mother six years ago.
02:31I grew up in this house.
02:32My family has owned it since I was six years old.
02:35So over 30 years.
02:37I wish I could keep this house forever.
02:40I earned it with my own two hands.
02:42No helping.
02:43No cosign.
02:44See it all by myself.
02:46She always wanted it to be a safe place for all my siblings to have a place to call home.
02:51Even though my mom doesn't live here anymore, continuing that tradition is something that I feel responsible for.
02:57Between Charlene, Ofa, their three kids.
03:00I mean, that's who's living in the house, but it seems like they have a really big extended family.
03:05This is what it looks like when we are together.
03:10It's important for us to be a hub, but it's very difficult right now just because of the way that the house is kind of falling apart.
03:20I saw some things that I thought I could do it myself.
03:23I could save some money.
03:24I thought I could duct tape some of the plumbing and it'll stay together.
03:28Oh shit. This is what not to do, my friends.
03:31Ofa has been working on our popcorn ceiling and scraping it off.
03:36Love him for trying, but I'm just so done.
03:40We ended up hiring a contractor.
03:42When the contractor left, we started seeing things falling apart.
03:45We had a flood in the upstairs bathroom that caused some water leaks that leaked all the way down to the downstairs bathroom.
03:52Because we spent so much money already, I think we're pretty defeated after that.
03:57Now we have one working bathroom.
03:59No, I have to shower! We're gonna be late!
04:01We only have one working sink where we use for everything.
04:05This is us brushing our teeth in the morning.
04:08Everyone's grumpy.
04:10I feel like if we don't get help, I don't know how much longer we can live here like this.
04:17I hate to say it, but I feel like we would have to sell.
04:22Big fill.
04:25It's gonna be tough, right?
04:27I don't know what this house holds as far as how many generations of problems I'm walking into.
04:35But I have a feeling that it's gonna need a lot of love.
04:38This is not California anymore.
04:43Come on in!
04:45Come on in!
04:46Bye!
04:47Oh my goodness!
04:48There's like a party in here!
04:50This is just a fourth of him.
04:52What?
04:53No way!
04:54We call it headquarters.
04:56This is where our family comes together and basically in our living room and kitchen with people hanging over.
05:01Who actually lives here in this house?
05:03Right.
05:04Who has lived here?
05:06Everyone.
05:07And who actually wrecked the house?
05:09Oh my goodness.
05:11It was all an effort to make it better.
05:13Yeah.
05:14The hard thing about a multi-generational home is there's never that like hard stop like,
05:19oh, we're gonna sell the house and do an inspection and get it all fancy and get it all nice.
05:23No, it just kind of goes on to the next person so there's never that reset.
05:27The thing that stands out to me when I first walked in is just the paint and the wear and tear.
05:32Yeah.
05:33It's nice that the popcorn's gone.
05:34I thought it was gonna take me a couple days, but it took me almost a whole week.
05:39We had to stay in a hotel and it was day by day because he was like, I'll finish tonight.
05:43And then I got a call.
05:44It's not done.
05:45I feel like it is a lot of pressure having to be able to provide and make sure that the house functions the way it's supposed to.
05:54I can't help but notice.
05:55I mean, what's going on here with this electrical?
05:58We didn't work on it.
05:59It was a project that my brother wouldn't work on.
06:02Is he an electrician?
06:03He's not.
06:04We all know that this is dangerous.
06:07Yeah.
06:08I literally am scared each night of our house catches on fire.
06:13It's not just this.
06:14You can feel a breeze coming through an outline behind the couch.
06:17You can feel a breeze behind the couch?
06:19Yeah.
06:20Like, it's not falling out of the wall, but it does spark when you plug something in.
06:23It's covered by a couch, which is super flammable.
06:27Yeah.
06:28That's a huge concern, then.
06:29Yeah.
06:30This isn't the original kitchen.
06:31No.
06:32No.
06:33So we got this remodeled like seven years ago.
06:35The contractors that we hired, they didn't install it very well.
06:39I see over here, you've got your drawer that's kind of falling apart.
06:42I have to put it back together at least once a week.
06:45And then this one, they installed the Lazy Susan, but they installed the countertops before finishing.
06:50So it doesn't even turn.
06:52Oh, shoot.
06:53That is so annoying.
06:54Yeah.
06:55Basically, the whole kitchen's falling apart.
06:56Yeah.
06:57You live on a prayer in our kitchen.
06:58You say a little prayer before you come in.
07:00And now we even have the floor, they're starting to chip away.
07:03Oh, yeah.
07:04Yeah, it seems like it's giving.
07:06I mean, that's concerning.
07:08When you see soft spots like that, it means that there's some sort of damage that we can't see.
07:15Oh, man.
07:17I started to resent the house with all the mishaps, with all the renovations gone wrong.
07:24How we survive is leaning on each other.
07:27You had the bathroom renovated.
07:29Mm-hmm.
07:30We did.
07:31Do not use.
07:32Do not use sink.
07:33So when you turn on the water...
07:34I mean, the drain is just going straight into this bucket.
07:37I've been trying to kind of put it back together, and it's not working very good.
07:42What about your tub shower?
07:44It was leaking, just like in the kitchen.
07:46If you step towards it, you can feel it kind of push away from the tub.
07:50Oh, oh, oh, here.
07:51Yeah.
07:52Oh, oh, yeah.
07:53So when we dig into this bathroom, we'll have to see where the water damage, how far it's gone.
07:58If the water is dripping into the bathroom below, my concern is that it's gone pretty far.
08:02Okay.
08:03Yeah.
08:04This is where the most damage has been done.
08:08Right through here.
08:10Did you just take a blanket down?
08:12I did.
08:13Oh, my gosh.
08:14I know.
08:15Oh, my gosh.
08:16She's right.
08:17What is this?
08:18Oh, my gosh.
08:20The leak damaged a lot of some of the drywall right here.
08:24So I had to kind of rip some of this off.
08:27Who did this plumbing?
08:28I did, too.
08:29It looks pretty terrible.
08:31Yeah.
08:32Yeah.
08:33I installed that toilet that we could at least have another toilet that we can use.
08:41Ever since I installed it, it pretty much does that.
08:44If I'm going to help you, I need you to promise that you're not going to do any more plumbing.
08:48I promise I'm never going to touch the bathroom.
08:50I think that we can change the story, make this bathroom the best bathroom in the house.
08:55Oh, my gosh.
08:56It would be so amazing because our room is downstairs.
08:59Just to walk out of our room and go to a working bathroom.
09:02Okay.
09:03Let's go upstairs and have a little chat.
09:05Yeah.
09:06We're just on survival mode at this point.
09:08I could be in my Zen moment mode and then immediately at 100 because I'm like, ugh.
09:14It would be hard to tell my mom that we would sell the house just because I know how much it means to her and how much it means to the family.
09:26This was the home that she brought us up in all by herself.
09:31And this is a home where we took care of my older brother who passed away here.
09:38When we're all here gathered together laughing, joking, that's heaven to me.
09:43That's my family.
09:45It's interesting how much a house can become part of our story.
09:48Yeah.
09:51I feel the weight.
09:52Yeah.
09:54I'm glad you called me.
09:56I don't know what I'm going to find when we start digging into this house.
10:02I don't know.
10:03What is your budget for this project?
10:05Around 180.
10:07So the last two years we've been saving.
10:09We budget.
10:10We don't eat out.
10:11I got a job.
10:12A lot of things have changed in order for us to save a little bit faster.
10:15I do think that for $180,000, we can get you a working house.
10:19It's going to be awesome.
10:20Thank you so much for sharing.
10:22This family lives to serve other people.
10:25And this house is a big part of that.
10:28Now I have to actually make this into the headquarters that Ofa and Charlene need it to be.
10:34It's scary to like have somebody in your home and to go through like peeling back the layers of everything that we try to hide.
10:43This is my first client project in Utah.
10:46I believe in word of mouth.
10:47So I know that if this project doesn't go well, people are going to hear about it.
10:51We're going to do it.
10:52We're going to do this.
10:53I knew that finding a new team here in Utah was going to be one of the main challenges.
11:10In California, I had trades that I'd worked with for years and years.
11:15Here, I don't have those people.
11:16So I have maybe one person to call.
11:18Matt!
11:19Hey!
11:20How are you?
11:21Good to see you.
11:22Good to see you.
11:23I'm going to take a chance on Matt.
11:25I've been doing this since I was probably about 16 years old.
11:28And my company's been in business for 25 years.
11:31Always kind of specialized in remodeling, but we always have some custom homes going.
11:34When Jasmine first called and explained that she'd been in the hospital, had a baby,
11:38and the nurse that was helping her was a client of ours.
11:41They shared information and decided that we would team up and try to do some projects together.
11:45Where do we want to start?
11:46Do you think we should do something with this?
11:49You are so excited to do that, right?
11:51I mean, the big thing that I see first is the ceiling.
11:54What do we have to do to make the ceiling not look like this?
11:57You can see, look how many imperfections.
11:58They're all over.
11:59Anywhere you look, there's big cracks.
12:01So if we put a really light texture on it, we'll be able to make this look almost brand new.
12:05So a light texture, huh?
12:07Yeah, I think that's going to make it look the best and hide so many of the imperfections that are in this older ceiling.
12:13So I know we've never done a project together.
12:16I personally don't like texture.
12:20I get it.
12:21This ceiling, I mean, ceilings in general are really hard, and we want it to look the best that it possibly can.
12:26So a light texture, but in the future, whenever we can have just like a nice, flat, beautiful ceiling.
12:33A flat, clean ceiling all the way across.
12:35That's what we're going for.
12:36I like that.
12:37I wouldn't say I'm hard to work with, but I'm definitely not easy to work with.
12:40I have really high expectations.
12:42Really high.
12:43Slowly but surely, hopefully as we work together, we'll get to a place where we have that trust and we know each other's strengths.
12:50But it's going to take some time.
12:52This side of the room isn't being used at all.
12:55It's just an empty space.
12:56Yeah.
12:57And I think what we need to do is we need to use all of our real estate.
13:00But what are you going to do about this floor?
13:01Look at the floor.
13:02I think there's been some water damage.
13:03Yeah.
13:04Yeah, look at that.
13:05It just kind of comes up.
13:06We've got to spend some time getting things right.
13:09Things in the wall, things underneath the floor, all of those important things.
13:12That's what they missed the first time around.
13:14Yeah.
13:15But that's the stuff that you have to spend money on.
13:16So we're going to do that for them.
13:17Let's talk bathrooms.
13:18Well, I don't even know where to start in the bathroom.
13:20The tub's falling apart.
13:22The floor has so much movement.
13:24I'm worried that maybe not just the subfloor has problems.
13:27The actual structural and the floor trusses might even have some rot.
13:31And sometimes I get nervous that the floor is going to fall through right here.
13:34That's for sure all rotted out.
13:36I think for this bathroom, it's a full gut.
13:39Yeah.
13:40I think we're going to have to get rid of everything in here.
13:42We definitely can make it better.
13:43All right.
13:44Let's go look at the other bathroom.
13:46Oh, boy.
13:47We just came from the upstairs bathroom.
13:49And now you can see where the subfloor's already rotted.
13:51It's already got a lot of problems.
13:52You can see the water damage.
13:53I mean, look at the rust and moisture that's been on here.
13:56This all has to be replaced.
13:57I think it all needs to be replaced.
13:58This is really challenging.
13:59It's an old house with a lot of leaks, a lot of quirks.
14:03Let's get to work.
14:04Okay, let's do it.
14:09I just had a baby.
14:10I haven't ripped the kitchen apart in a while.
14:13Oh, that's coming right up.
14:15This subfloor doesn't look terrible.
14:17No, this looks okay.
14:18This is numerous other floors on it over the time.
14:21Over here, obviously, there's not been as much water damage.
14:23I think this side's probably okay.
14:25Yeah.
14:26But for sure, this part where there's been water and the water is,
14:28we're going to want to replace it for sure.
14:30Okay.
14:31Here's what I'm thinking for this space.
14:32The entry to this house is problematic.
14:34Brand new front door.
14:35Okay.
14:36That becomes, like, a really welcoming entryway.
14:38We've got a spot for the shoes, a spot to hang things.
14:41This area is actually going to become their dining space.
14:43So we'll do a new railing.
14:45Next to that will be the dining table.
14:46Yep.
14:47And then in here, it's new base, new case, new paint.
14:50Okay.
14:51New floors, LVP.
14:52Okay.
14:53The ceiling with a light texture, some can lighting,
14:56and a really fun shelf to display family memories.
15:00I think we cut the wall back so that they have that connectivity
15:03between the kitchen and their new dining area.
15:06Then we shift this entire range area down to center
15:10on what will become our new double-the-size kitchen.
15:15We have an opening into the living room
15:17with a breakfast bar for the kids.
15:19I think a nice, bold paint color on the lower cabinets
15:22and then white uppers, white quartz countertops.
15:25This wall will be cabinetry.
15:26We'll have our refrigerator over here
15:28and a nice big pantry for food and small appliances.
15:33This is going to be such a game changer for them.
15:36Hey, Jasmine.
15:38What you got?
15:39So a little bit different than what we expected.
15:41We thought there'd be either some mold or some water damage here,
15:44along this back wall, and it's looking pretty good.
15:46Looks clean.
15:47It's really clean.
15:48I mean, this tub, this is the unknown.
15:50It is.
15:51You have 30-plus years of a bathroom leaking.
15:54I mean, there's been a lot of moisture coming under this.
15:59Look at that.
16:00That floor is completely rotted out right there.
16:03It's still wet.
16:04There's still moisture.
16:05This is scary.
16:06This floor, it needs to be replaced, and it's a good thing that we're here now.
16:11This is the only bathroom they had that was working, and it had nowhere to go but down.
16:15OK, let's go to the bathroom downstairs.
16:17OK.
16:18And figure that out.
16:19Now you can see all that water damage up in that upstairs bathroom.
16:22Floor trusses are good.
16:23They're in good shape.
16:24So it's just this subfloor.
16:25Well, I don't want to hold anything up.
16:26Let's get the guys back in here.
16:27Just keep going.
16:28Can you see in this wall cavity right here?
16:30Look at that.
16:31You see?
16:32Nope.
16:33Nope.
16:34Nope.
16:35Ugh.
16:36Here, let me get one for you.
16:37No, no, no.
16:38Stop.
16:39Oh, no.
16:40Oh, no.
16:41That's not good.
16:42I do not like bugs.
16:44Cockroaches in a home are really dangerous, so they can spread disease like salmonella.
16:47They can trigger asthma.
16:49They can trigger allergies.
16:50They are also really hard to kill.
16:52I don't like this.
16:53I think we probably need to call an exterminator.
16:55I've actually never found cockroaches in one of our projects before.
16:59Is this a Utah thing?
17:00Is this something I have to be concerned about now when I'm opening up the walls?
17:03Well, luckily, it's new for both of us, but this to me is kind of a big problem.
17:06So all I hear is change, change, change, right?
17:18Hey, Jasmine, it's Matt.
17:19We're getting both bathrooms ready.
17:21So now we're going to have two bathrooms.
17:22The water heater is an older 40-gallon water heater.
17:25I think it'd be really smart right now to upgrade that to a 50-gallon water heater.
17:29They're going to use so much more water.
17:31We are already revamping all the drain lines and water lines.
17:34It'd be an easy time to do it.
17:36It would cost about $1,600.
17:37Also, we've got something in the basement that I need to show you.
17:41Figuring out how to change and adapt my design style is a big part of our move to Utah, honestly,
17:47and kind of reinventing my company.
17:50Like, there's so much that goes into design, and it's all dictated by what people need.
17:56And the needs here in Utah are just different than in California.
17:59So now that we've exposed this whole wall...
18:01Oh, shoot.
18:02...you can see this foundation crack.
18:03Whoa!
18:04And it goes all the way over into the next room.
18:08Not exactly sure what would have caused it.
18:10It could have happened when they built the house, when the house was poured.
18:13This is new to me.
18:14We don't have a lot of basements in Southern California.
18:17I think we need to get a foundation specialist to come in here, take a look at it,
18:20and they can determine if they can actually seal that from the inside.
18:23That's best-case scenario.
18:25So if that's best-case scenario...
18:27Worst-case scenario, we would have to come out and dig out on the exterior of the building
18:32and expose the crack from the outside and address that from the outside.
18:36That sounds really expensive.
18:37It's very expensive, and it's very time-consuming.
18:40Oh, man.
18:42I definitely expected issues with this house, like the plumbing, the electrical,
18:47maybe even the framing, right?
18:48But finding this foundation crack, that was not something I was expecting.
18:58Will?
18:59Hey.
19:00How's it going?
19:01True.
19:02I should ask you.
19:03Yeah.
19:04I see bugs moving right there.
19:05Yeah.
19:06This crack here was just letting in all kinds of different roaches.
19:09Really?
19:10It's really gross.
19:11Yeah.
19:12Wow.
19:13How long do you think this crack was here?
19:14Years, probably.
19:15The reason that you get cracks like this on a horizontal path like that is it's the rebar
19:20that's inside the wall.
19:21Mm-hmm.
19:22As the rebar expands and contracts, that's what causes these kinds of cracks.
19:25What we're going to do to fix it, though, is we're going to put this epoxy patch on.
19:28We're going to put the polyurethane through these ports that we already have set up.
19:31Mm-hmm.
19:32And we're going to put more of those ports all the way down.
19:34Once the polyurethane's in the wall, it's going to expand 500%, and then you guys will be sealed.
19:39How long does this take to dry, and when do I have to stop worrying about it?
19:43So the epoxy takes about 15, 20 minutes.
19:45Oh.
19:46The polyurethane is 24 hours.
19:48Once it's all set and sealed, it will be set and sealed all the way to the exterior of the foundation.
19:52That's awesome.
19:53Pulling $1,800 out of the contingency for a crack in the foundation that you're never going to see again, like, that's not fun, but it is something we have to do.
20:01And then also, we've hired an exterminator, and they're coming now.
20:04They're going to come again after we put the drywall up, and then they'll come a third time in six months, and that should take care of this problem.
20:17Are you excited to see the house?
20:18I'm so excited.
20:19I'm kind of nervous.
20:21Yeah.
20:22I hate the idea of Charlene and Ofa being taken advantage of by another contractor.
20:27I think that they need to know that there are contractors and people out there that care and that want to work on their house that are going to do a really good job.
20:35So I think it's important for them to see a little bit of the process and understand what it is we're doing to make sure that their house is safe.
20:42Oh, my gosh.
20:43Hi.
20:44Hello.
20:45Hello.
20:46Oh, my gosh.
20:47Oh, my gosh.
20:49Oh, my gosh.
20:50This is awesome.
20:51This is so awesome.
20:52This is so awesome.
20:53Holy.
20:54Whoa.
20:55I can see my bathroom.
20:56This is so cool.
20:57This is so cool.
20:58I love it.
20:59I love everything so far.
21:01Seeing all the work that Jasmine had done to it, I'm overwhelmed with just the washing away of the old and broken and just rebuilding.
21:10We found one thing after another.
21:12One of the big things was this floor that we're standing on.
21:15Uh-huh.
21:16Oh, my gosh.
21:17There was water damage in pretty much the whole kitchen.
21:19Yeah.
21:20And that's why your floors didn't last.
21:21Yeah.
21:22So we replaced the whole thing.
21:23It is solid now, right?
21:24I love it.
21:25Sorry, I'm going to keep crying.
21:26No, it's okay.
21:27You just keep talking and I'll just keep crying.
21:30I love this.
21:33You can see that we are well underway as far as replacing electrical.
21:38Wow.
21:39We've already replaced the panel.
21:41And that's going to run throughout the house so you don't have to worry about going to bed at night and wondering what's going to happen.
21:47Yeah.
21:48You had mentioned that it was a fear.
21:49Yeah.
21:50That was something that was, like, weighing on me.
21:53You know, as a mom, you want your kids to be safe.
21:56It just...
21:59I don't know.
22:00You would have to open up the walls like this.
22:02Yeah, to be able to.
22:03You weren't going to do that.
22:04That wasn't on your...
22:05That wasn't something you guys were going to take on.
22:07With your bathrooms, you can see there's a bunch of new plumbing.
22:10We have a brand new hot water heater.
22:12And then we replaced the entire plumbing stack.
22:14Oh.
22:15So you don't have to worry about leaks.
22:17I don't have to rig it anymore.
22:19You're not touching this plumbing.
22:20No, I'm not touching the plumbing.
22:22No.
22:23This is way above a homeowner's pay grade.
22:26Like, y'all couldn't have done this on your own.
22:28I'm so overwhelmed with everything that's getting done.
22:30Like, I'm so...
22:32It's just the beginning.
22:33I know.
22:34I think some of the things that my mom has always wanted, I'm seeing it playing out.
22:41My dad was a handyman.
22:43And then when he passed away, she didn't have him around to do those things for her.
22:47And it was hard for her to ask for help, too.
22:50So she tried to get the help the best way she knew how, by people that she knew or that she was comfortable with.
22:57But it didn't always mean that they knew what they were doing.
23:00A weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
23:02I just feel really good and very grateful right now.
23:05The next time that you see this area, this whole house, it's gonna look very different.
23:11We got this.
23:12Everything that we're doing right now is an insurance plan.
23:15It's ensuring that the next generation can live here no problem.
23:19And that this house is not gonna give them a headache anymore.
23:22They're just gonna be able to live here and be happy.
23:24I'm trying really hard to understand Ofa and Charlene's design style.
23:36So I sent them a questionnaire that I sent to all of my clients.
23:39They wanted color.
23:40They wanted blues.
23:41They wanted greens.
23:42They wanted to feel like they were at the beach.
23:44I mean, it makes sense, right?
23:45They're Pacific Islanders.
23:46Of course they love the beach.
23:48But here I am in Utah trying to reinvent my company and my design style and myself.
23:53And of course the first clients I get, they want a beach house.
23:56So, yeah, I can do a beach house.
23:58Night and day difference.
23:59We got 30 floor.
24:01The drywall's up.
24:02Now we can finally start building this back up.
24:05So we moved the toilet so it's to code.
24:07In the shower, I wanna use this beautiful juniper green tile.
24:11We run the LVP floors in.
24:13New vanity.
24:14I think we should do a medicine cabinet for extra storage.
24:16Champagne bronze plumbing fixtures.
24:19And suddenly they've got a brand new functional safe bathroom.
24:22The cool thing is we now have two working bathrooms.
24:27That's never been the case.
24:28I mean, not as long as Charlene can remember has there been two working bathrooms in this house.
24:33This is not the scary bathroom anymore.
24:35We've got new plumbing.
24:36We've got no hole.
24:37We've got no crack in the foundation.
24:39So for this bathroom, we start with a door.
24:41New LVP flooring.
24:43A 36 inch vanity.
24:44I love the idea of using this champagne bronze fixtures again.
24:48In the shower, I want to combine a dark green tile with a terrazzo large format stacked tile to still give that beach feel, but make sure that it feels like it's in the mountains.
24:59And then where the shelving was, we can put white oak shelves so that this becomes just really great storage for their family.
25:06They've never used the space.
25:07And I think they will now.
25:12This is not the place to show off like luxury finishes and custom this and one of a kind flown in from Italy that the design can still be beautiful, but it has to be family friendly.
25:25It has to be long lasting and it has to be smart.
25:28So these cabinets are blue and white.
25:30We added a wall, which was blocked by a couch anyway, so we could wrap the cabinets all the way around.
25:36They have a lot of small appliances, a lot of pantry items, a lot of things that need to be put away in cabinets that they didn't have before.
25:47Hi.
25:48Hey, I thought you were coming.
25:49No, I'm here.
25:50Yeah, I get milk all over.
25:52I was just pumping out of the way in.
25:54I took a turn.
25:55I spilled milk all over my truck.
25:57It's a whole thing I got going on, so I'm just trying to clean up real quick.
26:00Oh, shoot.
26:01Well, I'm super sorry.
26:02That's...
26:03No one wants to deal with spilt milk in a truck.
26:04Trying to keep a baby alive, you know what I'm saying?
26:07So, um, I'll be in in a minute.
26:09Okay, bye.
26:10Trying to do too many things at once, right?
26:13I'm the only woman on this job site, as it is.
26:16And now I'm out here, you know, trying to do it all.
26:20And it's hard.
26:21It's a lot.
26:22Just deep breaths.
26:26It's just a season, right?
26:28Hi.
26:29Hey.
26:30Oh, my goodness.
26:31Look at these cabinets.
26:33Oh, my.
26:35It looks so good in here.
26:37Yeah, it does.
26:38It looks really good.
26:39Woo!
26:40Now that I had to open up that cabinet right there.
26:46Right?
26:47Do you remember the lazy Susan that they had before?
26:50They installed the countertops before finishing.
26:52So it doesn't even turn.
26:53It doesn't turn.
26:54Oh, shoot.
26:55Okay, so basically the whole kitchen is falling apart.
26:57Yeah.
26:58This is gonna change everything for them.
26:59Really what we've done essentially is double the size of this kitchen.
27:02Oh, yeah.
27:03Without a renovation, like a proper, like, gut, let's start fresh type of renovation, there was no way they were gonna get here.
27:09Yeah.
27:10And now you can see all the way down to the front door.
27:12Mm-hmm.
27:13And we had to move.
27:14Return airs, thermostats, electrical.
27:16You know what I'm just seeing?
27:17Sorry to interrupt you.
27:18Look at the ceiling.
27:19Not bad, right?
27:20Not bad.
27:21I know these ceilings were the first thing that I kind of called you on.
27:23Right.
27:24The light texture, it hides, but it's not noticeable.
27:28That's a great compromise.
27:39Hi, guys.
27:40That's beautiful.
27:42A designer is only as good as a carpenter who's making their designs come to life.
27:46Are you Jared?
27:47I am.
27:48Jasmine.
27:49Nice to meet you.
27:50Finding a good carpenter, or in my case, a couple good carpenters, is top of the list for me.
27:56Matt sent me here.
27:57He said you were the guy I need to know.
27:59That's nice of him.
28:00So how long has your shop been here?
28:02I've been doing finish work for almost two decades.
28:05And this is a little bit new.
28:07We just kind of took a chance on it.
28:09It's been about a year and a half.
28:10Yeah, I think one of the hardest things, I mean, I just moved here from Southern California.
28:13I have all these ideas.
28:14Families that need really custom solutions.
28:17Yeah.
28:18I need a carpenter.
28:19I need somebody who's, like, down to try things and do weird projects.
28:22That's awesome.
28:23I think you've found the right spot.
28:24Everything you just said I love.
28:25This family that we're helping, they have people in and out all the time.
28:29Yeah.
28:30Custom piece for their entry just makes a lot of sense.
28:32And I love what you came up with.
28:33I think it's going to work great.
28:35We've kind of got the beginnings of it set up.
28:38My idea is for a custom pegboard that is going to solve the problem of what do you do with your stuff when you come through the door.
28:45How many are we doing?
28:46Fourteen times, what was it, seven?
28:48Fourteen times seven?
28:50I don't, I can't do that kind of math in my head.
28:52We don't do math in front of each other.
28:53Ninety-eight holes we have to drill.
28:56This is a multi-generational home that is constantly moving.
29:01They have people coming, they have people going.
29:03People are taking off their shoes, their jackets, their backpacks.
29:05And so I think this pegboard with movable pegs for, you know, you can change it out.
29:09I think this is going to be a great solution.
29:11So the next time I see you, I think this will be painted and you guys will be installing it?
29:15Absolutely.
29:16Should be good.
29:17I guess we've officially worked on our first project together.
29:19First of many, hopefully.
29:26One of the typical mornings of waking up in my sister's house.
29:33This must have been bad, but someone at my feet.
29:38And today it is, they turned their living room into a bedroom for the kids for us, which
29:48was very kind of them.
29:49Oh, there she is.
29:50You can see how we've been living the past two months.
29:55How's it going?
30:05Pretty good.
30:06Good to see you.
30:07Good to see you.
30:08Hi.
30:09Any idea why I asked you to come here today?
30:12I was just kind of hoping I get to see the house before everybody knows.
30:16I think Ofa had a lot of pressure on him with this being a multi-generational home and
30:20him marrying into that family to, like, take care of this house.
30:24Ofa promised me that he would never do plumbing again, which I appreciate.
30:28But what if something comes up in the future?
30:31So I want to make sure that I at least give him a little bit of beginner plumber's knowledge.
30:35It looks amazing in here.
30:37We're getting there.
30:38Yeah.
30:39We just set this vanity clean, nice, new.
30:41So you and I are going to install the toilet.
30:45Sweet.
30:46You're going to show me if you do it the right way, so that'll be cool.
30:49You installed it the first time.
30:50It was loud.
30:55I'm excited to try it the right way.
30:58So you're going to be the resident expert as far as toilet installing goes.
31:01You can let your family decide if they want their toilets installed.
31:04But in this house, no more toilet installations.
31:08Okay, sounds good.
31:09How many wax rings did we use last time?
31:11I think I only used one last time.
31:13Added to all the leaks.
31:15I don't know how to do any of it.
31:17So I always had to watch the videos and improvise the best that I could.
31:22Sometimes I felt proud of some of the work that I did.
31:25I thought I did a pretty good job.
31:27But then it got to a point when I couldn't stop the leaks or anything.
31:32So it was just super overwhelming.
31:35What do you think will be the biggest noticeable difference?
31:38My wife won't yell at me as much just by not having a door in here.
31:43Or having the holes in the walls, so...
31:45I know that she feels strongly about this being, you know, a multi-generational home.
31:50And she has that attachment to it.
31:52You adopted that stress.
31:54Yeah.
31:55When I couldn't fix a lot of the damages, I felt like it was all on my shoulders.
32:01And I didn't want to let my wife down or her and my mother-in-law down,
32:05because this is their family home.
32:06So when they kept plotting it, it was overwhelming.
32:09The more we worked on the house, the more just stuff kind of fell apart.
32:13So it takes a big burden off of me.
32:16I mean, if this house continues its history,
32:18one of your kids is going to live here for a long time.
32:22So hopefully this toilet will be here for a long time.
32:24I hope so, too.
32:25It's my handiwork.
32:27Oh, my gosh!
32:30Oh, my gosh!
32:33I love you!
32:41Ooh, you need some help?
32:42That would be great.
32:43We've got your hood all ready.
32:44Isn't that pretty?
32:45This is beautiful!
32:46I know!
32:47Jared, this looks great!
32:48Yeah, it's just pure natural.
32:50I'm excited to work with Jared again.
32:52And he's going to make this kitchen feel like a beautiful custom kitchen
32:56because of this vent hood.
32:58We've got a white oak hood with a little bit of millwork detail,
33:01and it's just to kind of offset the painted cabinetry.
33:04This is the beachiest mountain kitchen I've ever done.
33:08This white oak goes with that.
33:10It is plucked right out of a beach house.
33:12So then, backslash between the wood grain and the tones of the wood on the floors,
33:17you start to really get a little bit more of that warmth.
33:20We want this kitchen to be welcoming, comfortable.
33:23I think these more organic tones will help with that.
33:26Family function.
33:27Family functional!
33:28There you go.
33:29See?
33:30Now you're getting it.
33:31We used a quartz countertop in the kitchen because this family, they use their kitchen.
33:43They live in this kitchen, and I want to make sure that they don't have to worry
33:46about staining or etching or anything going on these quartz countertops.
33:55Not only have we not built a house together before, we have not hung shelves together.
34:00No, we haven't.
34:01This is the true test.
34:02This is the true test.
34:03How do you feel like this project went?
34:05It was our first project together.
34:07It was fast.
34:08We had a few hiccups, right?
34:10And we got a lot done in a short time.
34:12Oh, I mean, I appreciate you guys.
34:14You guys hustled.
34:15I'm only as good as my team, and so I feel like you guys are now my team.
34:19Yeah, we would do another project for sure.
34:21We love it.
34:22It's kind of like that, do you like me?
34:24Do I like you?
34:25Check the box type thing, and then you realize you both like each other, and you're like,
34:28yeah.
34:29To know we like working together, to know that it's a mutual feeling, that's huge.
34:33So now I have one contractor.
34:35That's great, but I need a lot more, and I also have to figure out what my next project
34:39is going to be.
34:40We need more clients.
34:41I brought the one and only Thank You Burritos.
34:48Oh my gosh.
34:49Those burritos are small babies.
34:52This project was a different type of wreckage.
34:56I mean, this house has been at the hands of many people for many years.
35:01It never got a fresh start.
35:02If anything, there were people that were trying to help, but they were just making it worse.
35:06Undoing generations of wreckage means that Ofa and Charlene can live here with their family
35:12now.
35:13They can be happy in this home.
35:14They can be safe.
35:15Headquarters is back.
35:16I mean, this is going to be a family home for a long, long time.
35:23Hi.
35:24Hello.
35:25How are you doing?
35:26Good to see you.
35:27Welcome home.
35:28Good to see you.
35:30How are you feeling?
35:31A little nervous, but more excited.
35:33I think the house just meant a lot to everyone.
35:35Seeing it done the right way and seeing it done with the thought and love and care that
35:39you put into it will be very exciting for all of us.
35:42Yeah.
35:43I'm sure everyone is curious.
35:44So we had $180,000 set aside for this project.
35:48So we came in right at $180,000.
35:51Yes.
35:53Okay.
35:54So do you guys want to see inside?
35:55Yes.
35:56We're excited.
35:57Yes.
35:58Been dreaming about this.
35:59Oh, my gosh.
36:00Oh, my gosh.
36:01Oh, my gosh.
36:02I love it.
36:03Oh, my gosh.
36:04I love it.
36:05Oh, my gosh.
36:06Jasmine, this is so beautiful.
36:07This is awesome.
36:08I feel like we never had space like this before.
36:23Yeah.
36:24You didn't have space like this before, actually.
36:26No, you didn't.
36:27This wall came like all the way to here.
36:30Yeah.
36:31Now you can just kind of walk right in.
36:32Yeah.
36:33And you have a dining room.
36:34I know.
36:35That's awesome.
36:36A dining room where we can sit.
36:38Did you notice what's downstairs by the front door?
36:41No.
36:42I did.
36:43This is a peg board.
36:44This is a peg board.
36:45It was custom built by a local carpenter.
36:46That is so cool.
36:47So you've got a whole bunch of pegs that can go in a basket.
36:50Yeah.
36:51And the pegs are moved.
36:52Well, you can put them wherever you want.
36:53Oh, my gosh.
36:54Oh, what do you think about the ceilings?
36:56Oh, my God.
36:57These are your ceilings, my friend.
36:58It looks a lot better than the half job I did.
37:02It's so bright in here.
37:03Yeah, I love how bright it is.
37:05Why did you do this to me, Jasmine?
37:07I can't wait to sit here with my family.
37:13I was so excited.
37:15Thank you, Jasmine.
37:18Okay, do you want to see the kitchen?
37:19I do.
37:20Yeah?
37:21Yeah, I do.
37:22All right, let's go in the kitchen.
37:23Oh, my gosh.
37:28Oh, it's a tile.

38:00Right.
38:01A spot for all your small appliances.
38:02You have a pantry now that can house all of your food.
38:05Yeah.

38:53I love the tile.
38:54Ah.
38:55And most importantly, it works and it drains.
39:00Not only do you have new fixtures and new finished plumbing, but everything in the walls
39:03has been replaced and you have new plumbing.
39:05Yes.
39:06So if you see even one drop of water where it's not supposed to be.
39:09Yeah.
39:10You call a plumber immediately.
39:11Yes.
39:12Yes.
39:13Let's go see the scary bathroom.

39:37There was a giant hole in the ceiling.
39:38Yeah.
39:39It felt like condemned.
39:40Yeah.
39:41And now you have a bathroom that the whole family can use.
39:44You have a full-size vanity with extra space and storage.
39:47Oh, my God.
39:48A toilet that Ofa helped install that actually works.
39:51Oh, yeah.
39:52Try flushing it and see.
39:53Remember, this is the one that shakes the house.
39:56Yeah.
39:57Oh!

40:13Feels like home.
40:14It does.
40:15Feels like a home that I could be proud of to give it a raise
40:19our family here.
40:20Yeah.
40:21Thank you for that.
40:22You're so welcome.
40:24We just had no idea what was underneath the surface.

40:32and got down to the literal foundation of our home.
40:35Right.
40:36And, like, fixed it.
40:37And I feel that.
40:38Just so overwhelmed with gratitude.
40:41It's been great for me because, you know, I needed to get back to work
40:46and start working here in Utah, and you're my first clients here.
40:49So, thanks for trusting me and letting me spread my wings.
40:56Enjoy your new home.
40:58And, uh, don't install any toilets.
41:00We're home.

41:08Gosh, it's just, like, a huge relief.
41:10Like, we actually feel proud.
41:13It's not a regret anymore.
41:15The love is there.
41:16The memories are still there.
41:17Yeah.
41:18Even though it's changed a lot.
41:20We just wanted a shelter, a home for you guys.

41:44Now, I mean, it's beautiful.
41:46We spend all of our time here.
41:48It can become, like, a generational home for us
41:51that our kids can inherit it after us.
41:53Now, I feel like our home, it's that place where we can reset every day.
41:58Bye.
