00:00Hello?
00:12Hello, Retta. Do you still like scary houses?
00:16Hell no, homie.
00:21Boop!
00:25Yikes.
00:27Nope.
00:30Retta?
00:34Retta?
00:38Retta?
00:40Oh, s**t.
00:46Houses that go bump in the night. Creepy quarters. Devilish domiciles. And of course, me. Again.
00:56I'm done with the attic!
00:58It's the most frightful time of the year, and I'm traveling across the country in search of the 15 scariest homes we could find.
01:05Do you go down there?
01:06Do you want to go down there?
01:07No, I do not. No, no, no, no.
01:09We've already seen the eeriest in the east. I guess we're going into the jail, Max.
01:14I thought I was inhaling tetanus.
01:18And the most haunted in the heartland.
01:20Within the home, there's exactly 10 people that died.
01:24What's going on in here?
01:26Apparitions of Appalachia, here we come.
01:29Nothing for you.
01:30Stretching from New York to Mississippi, Appalachia is steeped in myth, rugged mountains, and the remnants of coal country.
01:42My first scary stop is in Greenville, Pennsylvania.
01:45My search for the scariest house in America has called me to Greenville, Pennsylvania, just south of Lake Erie and home to one of the area's creepiest legends.
01:58They call her the lady with the lantern, a ghostly figure who appears on the back roads at night.
02:06Some say she's searching for something. Some say she's watching.
02:11Either way, you're not going to find me on them back roads, day or night.
02:17I'm here to meet Edward and Tom. Why is their house so creepy?
02:28Because they live in the Addams Family home. That's why.
02:32Next to a place that makes tombstones.
02:35Okay, Edward and Tom.
02:42Hi.
02:44Hi, Freda.
02:45How are ya?
02:46I'm Edward.
02:47Edward, how are ya?
02:48Tom.
02:49Hi, Tom. How are ya?
02:51Should we go inside and see?
02:52Absolutely.
02:53Okay.
02:54My name is Tom, and this is Edward, and we live in an Addams Family-style haunted mansion in Greenville, Pennsylvania.
03:01We had no idea when we first purchased the home that it was a funeral home.
03:05A lot of people believe it's just text.
03:07We have shadow forms walking around at night. We have lights that come out of nowhere.
03:13But we're very happy with this house. It keeps Tom and me young.
03:17Plus, we look pretty good for 300 years old.
03:19Yeah.
03:24Whoa.
03:26This is a period piece.
03:28Oh, yeah.
03:29It looks fantastic, but creepy.
03:32Oh, it's creepy.
03:33The prior owner, his one son died, dropped a gun, shot himself in an artery, and bled out upstairs.
03:40Here?
03:41Here.
03:43As far as we know, at least five people have died in this house.
03:46Oh, boy.
03:47This was then a funeral home for five generations.
03:50I'm always going to get the heebie-jeebies from a funeral home.
03:56Well, we'll take you into the drawing room.
03:58The drawing room?
04:01Wow.
04:03I mean, this room is a vibe.
04:07Right behind you, it's where they had the caskets.
04:09I'm always standing where the dead people were.
04:12Have you had any experiences in here?
04:14Last night, we just saw the leg of somebody pass the doorway.
04:19Don't mess with me.
04:21Talking to your spirits.
04:23Your house was where dead people were stored and mourned.
04:30They don't all leave.
04:31Some get caught in the in-between place.
04:33This is an in-between place.
04:35There's a corpse door.
04:40There's always a corpse door.
04:43Oh, boy.
04:47That's it.
04:48This is it.
04:49They would lift the bodies up through the floor.
04:52It's kind of coffin-shaped.
04:56And the morgue.
04:58Wait, the morgue is down there.
04:59We're not going down there, are we?
05:01I mean, you'll be coming back out, Retta.
05:03Hopefully.
05:06I don't like basements.
05:11This is where they would prepare the bodies.
05:15Right over here.
05:16I'll show you.
05:18This channel.
05:19This is where they would pump the blood
05:20and wash it out from the preparations.
05:24Sure, sure, sure. You can cover it.
05:28That basement is ridiculous.
05:29It's never going to be a rec room, is all I'm saying.
05:32Where to?
05:34The upstairs.
05:36Now, we recommend that when you get to that door, you knock.
05:41Then you say, coming in, they appreciate that.
05:44You know what's going to happen?
05:45You're going to go first.
05:46Coming in.
05:47Oh, boy.
05:48We have the entrance to the disappointment room.
05:49Terrible.
05:50Yes.
05:51What's a disappointment room?
05:52If a family had a child with some sort of deformity or something, they would hide them away in rooms like this in the attic.
06:09This is not my favorite room.
06:13Yeah.
06:14My least favorite room is down that hall.
06:16Even worse than the disappointment room.
06:18Because that room is pretty .
06:21Yes.
06:22Welcome to the ballroom.
06:23The ballroom.
06:24The ballroom.
06:25Now, originally in these old Victorians, the third floor would be completely open and they would have their balls up here.
06:32Mm-hmm.
06:33Also, the structure of the French Second Empire style was meant to circulate the air, so it would actually keep this nice and cool the entire time that they were having their parties and entertaining.
06:46Let me tell you what's real messed up.
06:48Yeah.
06:51This is where they had the parties.
06:53Yes.
06:54And someone hidden in the back.
06:56Yes.
06:58Rude.
06:59This is also one of the more active rooms, so we rarely come up to this floor.
07:04We use it mainly for storage, but what's also curious is that one of the dogs refuses to come up.
07:10Came up once, will not come back up again.
07:14And yet, here we are.
07:15Yeah.
07:17So we'll move on.
07:18We're headed here.
07:20I'm gonna check my heart rate.
07:24Okay.
07:25All right.
07:26She's regular.
07:27Let's see.
07:29Oh, it's down here.
07:31Okay.
07:32It's like a scene from a horror movie.
07:34You know, that's the screen plastic.
07:37Like, what are we doing here?
07:39This used to be one of the bedrooms up here.
07:43Psychics that have been through have said that there's a lot of sadness in this particular room.
07:47Well, this rug and wallpaper is sad.
07:50It's very sad.
07:52All right, Tuttleman.
07:53You are one of three semifinalists in the Apparitions of Appalachia region.
07:59If you move to the next round, you will be that much closer to a renovation by Alice in Victoria.
08:06It's perfection.
08:08Emma, wish you luck.
08:09I'm gonna thank you for showing me your home.
08:11Thanks for coming, Brenda.
08:13Be careful, everybody.
08:14Be careful.
08:16So, that was Gomez and Morticia's home away from home.
08:22Appearance-wise, it appears to be haunted.
08:26Is it livable?
08:27I mean, if you're okay with shadow people and that disappointment room, then you're better than me, because this is not a livable space.
08:38Fright factor?
08:39Is it weird if I say all of it?
08:41Lots and lots of ghosts.
08:44It's not for me.
08:46Next on the Apparitions of Appalachia, I'm headed to the very quaint Belfont, Pennsylvania, to see if small-town charm is hiding big-time scares.
08:57Belfont, Pennsylvania.
08:59I'm here to meet Cat and Ed.
09:03I want to find out, what's the story with their house?
09:08God, I can see it already.
09:14It was a graveyard.
09:17Here we go.
09:27Hi.
09:28Ed and Cat, come on out.
09:33Yeah, nice to meet you.
09:35I'm a little bit nervous, because your backyard.
09:39It's so peaceful.
09:40It is?
09:41Nice and quiet.
09:42It's so quiet.
09:43Okay, let's hope.
09:47The headstones are so close to the house.
09:50They are close.
09:51We don't own the cemetery.
09:52And then, of course, we don't own the road.
09:54How do you not own the road?
09:55Your house is over it.
09:57Well, I own over it.
09:59I don't own through it.
10:00Because you have to use the road for funeral processions.
10:03Yep.
10:04The realtor warned us.
10:05It might happen.
10:06Really?
10:07I'm Cat, and this is my husband, Ed.
10:09And we live with our two kids in the gatehouse of the Union Cemetery.
10:13It was used as the caretaker's house.
10:16But then, in the 70s and 80s, it was used as a haunted house.
10:20And then, it fell into disrepair until it was refurbished in the 1980s.
10:23There's increasing levels of scariness.
10:26Doors will lock on their own.
10:28Kid toys will go off by themselves.
10:31The scariest thing was my daughter was crying in her crib, and I heard shh, shh.
10:40All right, let's see what's inside.
10:43So this is our living room.
10:44Welcome.
10:45It's still a work in progress.
10:47I'm looking at the floors.
10:49Original to the house, whether you want them to be or not.
10:52Listen, you live in a cemetery.
10:55Have you had any experiences in the house?
10:59Sometimes we hear, like, somebody walking up and down the stairs when, like, it's just us.
11:04But, like, it's fine.
11:05Yeah.
11:06It's okay.
11:07We've got a good deal on the place.
11:08We've got a great deal on the house.
11:09It's quiet.
11:10You keep saying that.
11:12Okay.
11:13Well, let's check out this kitchen.
11:15There was no counter.
11:16There are...
11:17I was like...
11:18There's no cabinets.
11:19The sink is held up by two by fours.
11:21I'm looking at it.
11:22Yeah.
11:23So when you're cooking, you're seeing the old cemetery.
11:26Yeah, we're seeing the neighbors.
11:27Your peeps.
11:28Yeah.
11:29Oh, I'm just now seeing that it comes down here.
11:30Yeah.
11:31Like it's...
11:32You guys are in the cemetery.
11:34This house is surrounded by headstones.
11:38They're all around.
11:39But the sun rises on that side, so in the morning on the...
11:41That's really pretty.
11:42It's so pretty.
11:43You're like, I see a beautiful sunrise, and I see dead people.
11:49This is a trap door?
11:51It's a trap door to the most creepy murdery of the basements.
11:57They just kept the dirt floor, but then they had to lay down plastic to create a vapor barrier,
12:02and then it got moldy.
12:03That's Dexter.
12:04That's adorable.
12:05Yeah, there were spiders that had mold on them.
12:07They were alive.
12:08It was like something out of a Stephen King novel.
12:10That is crazy.
12:13Okay.
12:14Where are we going?
12:15This is our library.
12:18Outside of looking into a cemetery, this is the liveliest of rooms.
12:22There's another front door here.
12:24We don't know why that's there.
12:25It's like all sealed off from the other side, so you can just see a wall.
12:30And unfortunately, this is where the walkway is underneath their house.
12:34And so kids use the walkway as they're coming back from school, and they'll just look right at you.
12:39Jeez.
12:40I was very surprised to see that there were zero curtains.
12:43We're going to have to throw up some sheets, some.
12:46Oh, boy.
12:47Oh, yeah.
12:48You got to...
12:49If I fall through these stairs, end of episode.
12:52You got to walk softly.
12:56I'm trying.
12:57I'm trying to stay on the edge.
12:59Oh, my God.
13:01I really did feel like lead step could open up.
13:07Swallow me.
13:08Made it.
13:09Made it.
13:10I see the bedroom.
13:11You do have to step down.
13:13You do.
13:14A little, like, balcony overlooking the cemetery.
13:18Do you go out here?
13:19I have not, because the railing...
13:21It's not secure.
13:24Where else are we going to look?
13:25Bathroom?
13:26Bathroom?
13:27Yeah.
13:28After you.
13:29They used the bathroom as a guillotine room.
13:31When it was a literal haunted house.
13:33Holy cow.
13:34Into the bathtub.
13:36The head catcher.
13:40This I'm trying to understand.
13:42What is that design?
13:44It was originally a flower.
13:46Blinded by it.
13:47Right over the bathtub.
13:48Right over the bathtub full of water.
13:50What's life without a little danger?
13:51Yeah.
13:52Yeah.
13:53It's too much.
13:54This is the kids' room.
13:58This is also the room that's, like, the most haunted.
14:00Oh.
14:01This is where weird things happen.
14:02Our four-year-old now has a...
14:04An imaginary friend.
14:05He was telling me the one day about, like,
14:07the other little girl who lives here.
14:09Sometimes she sleeps with me and we play.
14:11Like, oh, that's nice, honey.
14:15Sometimes the babies like to, like,
14:17wave at empty corners in the room.
14:19Hello?
14:20When there are headstones near your house,
14:22chances are your kids are gonna see apparitions in the corner.
14:28Thank you for showing me your home.
14:30Gonna wish you good luck.
14:31And I'm gonna make my way down those stairs.
14:35Thank you so much.
14:40That was Gables Over the Graveyard.
14:42Appearance-wise, it's a house on a graveyard
14:45where it's impossible to escape the surrounding tombstones.
14:49They see dead people.
14:51Unlivability?
14:52Very high.
14:53The stairs may go at any second.
14:56There is a murder pit under the kitchen.
14:59And everywhere you look is a jigsaw puzzle
15:02of potentially fatal accidents waiting to happen.
15:06How is that unlivable?
15:08The fright factor?
15:10Your kids see dead people.
15:13What is happening?
15:15Mm-mm.
15:16Nah, homie.
15:18We out.
15:20The apparitions of Appalachia Hunt continues on,
15:23and my next stop is Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.
15:27This town is soaked in the supernatural.
15:31From the haunted castle on the hill
15:34to the ghost-riddled old Dutch cemetery.
15:38Today, I'm meeting Cindy.
15:40We're here to find out if her house deserves a spot
15:43on the town's already haunted highlight reel.
15:49This looks like something you type in,
15:51scary witch house, and this pops up.
16:01Hi, Retta.
16:02Hi, Cindy.
16:03How are you?
16:04Welcome to Soldier's Rest.
16:05Good.
16:06Oh, that's the name?
16:07Yes.
16:08Soldier's Rest.
16:09Yeah.
16:10The lady that originally designed the house.
16:12Mm-hmm.
16:13That's what she named.
16:15There's a snake over here.
16:17Of course.
16:19Oh, boy.
16:20Oh, boy.
16:21Snakes.
16:32You guys.
16:33Yeah, I don't want to see it either, so.
16:35Anyway.
16:36Well, let's talk about the outside of the house.
16:38Come on out.
16:39Let's go.
16:40Let's go.
16:41Snakes.
16:42And you know something?
16:43It's the same snake all the time.
16:45Oh, gosh.
16:48I've done flipped him over the fence a few times.
16:50Are you serious?
16:51Yeah.
16:52I mean, you know, they keep mice and rats away, so.
16:56And rattlesnakes.
16:57Mmm.
16:58We don't get them up here.
17:00It's okay.
17:02It's okay.
17:03You're okay.
17:04Mm-mm.
17:05You're definitely okay here.
17:06Oh, you saw it?
17:07What's it?
17:08That four-foot one?
17:09Yeah.
17:10It's the same.
17:11No.
17:12No.
17:13You guys.
17:14David's gotta go.
17:15You gotta do this quick.
17:17Get her out of here.
17:18Her and me.
17:19You'll be okay.
17:20They don't bother you.
17:21I swear.
17:22Okay.
17:23I promise you.
17:24You promise?
17:25Yes.
17:26I love collecting old, weird things.
17:28It can't get any weirder than this.
17:30I noticed weird things happening the first couple months that I was here.
17:39There's something living in there with me.
17:42I hear noises, catch a little shadow, and then you get to the outside factor, where you
17:48don't want to walk outside at night, because you might step on a snake, or feral people might
17:54get you.
17:57Just come on up and you'll see.
18:00Cindy, this looks like something out of a storybook.
18:04That's why we bought it, because it's just so odd.
18:07Mm-hmm.
18:08I said, nobody in the world has a house like this, and they never will.
18:12Let's check it out inside.
18:14Jeez Louise.
18:17What?
18:18It's basically mostly just an open floor plan.
18:21Yeah.
18:22This is your bedroom.
18:25The floors are slotted.
18:26Slotted?
18:27Yeah.
18:28They won't fall in.
18:29They're very sturdy.
18:30This whole house is.
18:31See this?
18:32Oh.
18:33Uh-huh.
18:34This used to be attached to it.
18:36Oh.
18:37I was laying in my bed over there, and crossed the broom.
18:43Landed on the floor and busted.
18:45So you don't know what did it?
18:46No.
18:47No.
18:48That happens every once in a while.
18:50Every once in a while?
18:53A couple of times.
18:55Noted.
18:57OK.
18:58Should we circle around to the bedroom?
18:59Yeah.
19:00Let's circle around.
19:02The bedroom space.
19:03The rest of it.
19:04Where the bed is.
19:05Question.
19:06How quiet is it at night?
19:07It's very quiet at night.
19:08It is.
19:09Yeah.
19:10OK.
19:11Is there wind?
19:12But you hear coyotes and the foxes and stuff.
19:14And the other things that I hope I never hear.
19:17Like?
19:18Skinwalkers.
19:21They're like these demonic-looking, like, shape-shifting type.
19:26What are you talking about?
19:27The legend tells you that the Skinwalkers will be in the woods.
19:33If you go outside, like, whistling for your dog, they mimic it.
19:37They'll get your dogs away, and then they'll come for you.
19:41But you were like, screw a Skinwalker.
19:45I want this witchy house.
19:46Mm-hmm.
19:49I don't know that I ever really knew what Skinwalkers were.
19:52I still don't think I know.
19:56Oh, you know what?
19:57I wanted to tell you.
19:58Girl, don't look at places real fast, because then my heart jumps.
20:03If you could slowly turn your head and say, you know what?
20:05These knobs here?
20:07Uh-huh.
20:08I heard thumping, and then I heard it.
20:11And I turned around, there was nothing there.
20:14You make me nervous.
20:16Let's check out this kitchen.
20:17Yeah, let's go and see the kitchen.
20:22Ooh, it's nice and cool down here.
20:25Oh, yeah.
20:26This is the part of the house that's in the ground.
20:29Oh, I see that they blocked the spacing over here.
20:31Yes, in the kitchen.
20:32Yeah, you don't want the stuff falling in your plate?
20:35I just...
20:36Okay, so, Cindy, I'm going to wish you good luck.
20:40And I'm gonna make my way back upstairs.
20:49Just checking.
20:50So that was the witchy snake den.
20:54It looks like a Halloween decal.
20:57Like the stuff people put on their windows or if they're carving pumpkins.
21:01This is what they carve.
21:04This.
21:06Livability-wise, it's one room with a hole in the floor to get to the second floor.
21:11And the snakes.
21:12No snakes for me, please.
21:15That's not livable.
21:16Fright factor?
21:18There are skinwalkers at night.
21:21Hard.
21:23No.
21:24Appalachia.
21:25Yikes.
21:27The apparitions of Appalachia are no longer hiding.
21:30These three creepy contenders have revealed themselves, giving us thrills and chills.
21:36But only one can move to the finals for a chance at a renovation by Allison Victoria.
21:43Apparitions of Appalachia, your terror was truly traumatizing.
21:47And while all three houses had a haunting presence.
21:50You're gonna go first.
21:51I see.
21:52Dead people.
21:53Whoop!
21:54Only one is scary enough to take the region.
21:57Mm-mm.
21:58Nah, homie.
22:00It's between a horrifying mansion with a basement better suited for cadavers.
22:04This channel is where they would pump the blood and wash it out.
22:08Okay, we're gonna go.
22:09A haunted house in the middle of a graveyard where views of the dead can play games with your head.
22:16Like it's...
22:17You guys are in the cemetery.
22:20Your kids see dead people.
22:23What is happening?
22:25And a witchy haunt where snakes swarm.
22:28You guys.
22:29If they don't bother you, I swear.
22:30You can.
22:31I promise you.
22:32They are snakes.
22:33I don't like them.
22:35End of conversation.
22:36Can we get inside?
22:37Thanks.
22:38Here we are again.
22:39I'm about to tell someone that they have the scariest house in their region.
22:53Kat and Ed, how are things in Belfont?
22:56So spooky.
22:58Well, it's a good thing because you have the scariest house in the apparitions of Appalachia region.
23:08Awesome.
23:09Thank you for thinking our house is scary.
23:10Hi.
23:11You're that much closer to getting that renovation.
23:13So congratulations.
23:15I gotta tell you, it's that yard, my friend.
23:18Oh, it's there.
23:20How cute.
23:22Hi.
23:23Hi.
23:24Thanks, you guys.
23:25We'll talk to you later.
23:26Bye.
23:27Bye.
23:28Congratulations, Gables over the graveyard.
23:31Your unlivable home surrounded by corpses was a graveyard smash.
23:36But the question is, is it scary enough?
23:39There's still more scary houses to see.
23:43This house is a monstrosity.
23:45Oh, Lordy.
23:47Insane.
23:49You're welcome to open it, but Frank lives in there.
23:52I'm sorry.
23:53Let's come right out and save.
23:54Go.
23:55You might get hurt.
