00:00Brock Purdy is out officially for the game on Sunday
00:04between the San Francisco 49ers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
00:08And Mack Jones is on the injury report as well,
00:12officially listed as questionable.
00:15So there's your quarterback situation for the 49ers
00:18going in to the late window national game at 125.
00:24Niners and Bucs both 4-1.
00:28And Brock is out.
00:29Mack is questionable.
00:31And let's also add Ricky Pearsall is officially out for the game on Sunday.
00:37And I wonder if all of this came from the flight manifest
00:40as they got on the plane and you start to look at,
00:43all right, who's in 12A?
00:45Is Ricky there?
00:46No?
00:47All right, he's out.
00:48How about 8B?
00:50Brock?
00:51Brock?
00:51No?
00:52And, you know, like when you get on the plane sometimes and they're like,
00:55would the passenger, Jim Smith, please raise his hand?
01:0023B?
01:00Boom, boom.
01:01Yeah.
01:02Hit your call sign button if you are so-and-so and nobody does.
01:06It's like, oh, well, he's out.
01:08And I would imagine they're not going to fly at this point.
01:11Like, why would you fly Brock Purdy if he's out?
01:13I don't know.
01:13I don't know if they'll be at the game.
01:15Well, they didn't fly to L.A.
01:16Like, Brock didn't fly to L.A. for that game.
01:19So he stays.
01:20Yeah, probably.
01:20Probably, yeah.
01:21Why would you do that?
01:22I don't know.
01:23Oh, and Jawan Jennings is listed as questionable.
01:26He practiced again today.
01:27That one feels a little bit better than not, but he's also questionable.
01:32So the Tampa Bay Bucs have their own problems.
01:35Chris Godwin was announced today as out, although he's been out for the majority of the last year and a half.
01:40But he's been back in for the last two games.
01:43He's out.
01:43We know Mike Evans is out.
01:45Bucky Irving is out.
01:47How about Cade Auton?
01:49Cade Auton's in.
01:49Yeah, boy.
01:50Cade's in.
01:51Let's go.
01:51And Tampa has something that the 49ers don't, which is their starting quarterback.
01:56So he will play, and he's leading the MVP race probably right now in the minds of many.
02:01But there's no question about it.
02:03These two teams, for me, for my money, these have been the two most impressive starts of anybody in the NFL
02:09because they're both 4-1, and nobody has had their best pitch yet.
02:14Nobody's been fully healthy.
02:15And largely, both of them have been trailing in the fourth quarter of most of their football games.
02:22Yet they're both 4-1.
02:24So bravo to both of them.
02:26They obviously, they're tough.
02:27They show fight.
02:29They've got moxie.
02:30They're being well coached.
02:32And so let's see them go head-to-head, even though both of them will be limping to get there.
02:37Yeah, and we could talk a little bit more about who's been luckier.
02:41And you know I don't love the word luck as it pertains to when you play football
02:45and you actually win a game in clutch moments.
02:48But I do think we can look at these two 4-1 teams, and we can examine their wins and even their losses.
02:55And we can look at, you know, who's been more lucky.
02:58And maybe luck's not the word because, you know, I don't like it.
03:00But if you look at Tampa Bay and their 4-1, they got a semi-gift when Young-Way Koo, no longer employed,
03:08missed a field goal.
03:09And the Niners had a throw up for grabs that their guy went up and got.
03:14You had a pass breakup.
03:16You had a forced fumble.
03:17Each of these teams I do think is a mirror image of the other one as far as, like, fortuitous late-game victories.
03:25In different ways, yeah.
03:26Yeah, like Tampa's done it with a heroic quarterback on a two-minute drill.
03:32The 49ers have done it in a multitude of ways, right?
03:35They've done it with Alfred Collins punching out a ball.
03:38They've done it with a fourth-down stop.
03:41Brock Purdy took them on a game-winning drive but fluttered his touchdown pass into the air, seemingly headed for nowhere.
03:49But it ended up in the arms of Jake Tonjes.
03:52Mack Jones did have a nice drive against Arizona, put them in field goal range.
03:56So that one, I'm sure, felt really good.
03:59And, you know, like, I mean, the New Orleans one, they just won that football game.
04:03They played from ahead on that one.
04:05So, I don't know, like, the way the heroics of it seem to be a little bit different.
04:11But you're right from the general sense of heroics.
04:14Fourth-quarter heroics.
04:16And that says something about these teams.
04:18I don't know if either of these teams are the best teams.
04:21You know what I mean?
04:22Sure.
04:22I'd favor the Lions right now if they're playing either one of these teams.
04:25Right.
04:26And even, I mean, the Packers at 2-1-1 are interesting.
04:29Yeah, they're a good team.
04:30You know, Washington, now that they have their quarterback back, I do think that the NFC is fairly wide open.
04:35And I'm thinking about Tampa and their win over Seattle, where it's 2-1, Seattle's on their own 32, and Darnold throws an interception.
04:44And so now Tampa gets the ball, and all right, thank you.
04:47And we go boop, boop, boop.
04:49Use your timeouts.
04:50We kick a field goal, 39 yards.
04:52We win.
04:53And before that, one of their earlier games, they got a big-time PI that went their way.
04:58Young Way Koo missed a kick.
04:59So each of these teams has benefited from either mistakes by the other team, big plays by them, or just dumb luck.
05:08Yeah, fortuitous.
05:08Yep.
05:09No question about it.
05:11But you know what?
05:12Sports needs that.
05:13Sports needs that.
05:14I don't know why this is the one that just popped into my head.
05:16And Kawhi Leonard, the year that Toronto beat Golden State, was it that year, I believe, that in an earlier Eastern Conference round, it was like a walk-off series-ending, game-winning shot from the corner?
05:32Boinked up on the rim and went straight up in the air and boink, boink.
05:36That sounds right.
05:37Was that right, Grandy?
05:38Was that the same year?
05:39Yeah, that was 2019.
05:40Yeah, okay.
05:41Like, I mean...
05:42It was like a triple boinker.
05:43I remember Tiger Woods one time heading into the Masters in the middle of his highest run.
05:49And they're like, what do you need this week to win?
05:51And he's like, breaks?
05:53I need breaks.
05:55You know what I mean?
05:55Sometimes you hit the ball in the tree and pops off the tree and goes in the middle of the fairway.
05:59Yeah.
06:00That's okay.
06:00That's part of sports.
06:02The Niners got a lot of poor luck last year.
06:04The Niners are having a lot of good luck so far this year.
06:09It leads to this question, at least to start things off.
06:12888-957-9570 is the number.
06:15We would really love.
06:17Niner fans, let's line this up and let's do this.
06:21And let's really talk out where you're at on the quarterback position, especially now with the firm news that Brock is out.
06:31Mack is questionable.
06:32The Niners have been clear about their plan.
06:34They're planning to play Mack.
06:35They want to be open for if something goes wrong here in the next 48 hours.
06:39But Mack Jones is going to start and Brock Purdy is out.
06:43Okay, so with that information in your hip pocket, let's do what we can to prevent Christmas hypotheticals or even Thanksgiving hypotheticals.
06:55That's way down the road.
06:57But if Mack Jones wins this game, just this game, and they go 5-1, do you automatically and unequivocally want him to get Sunday night football next week against the Atlanta Falcons?
07:12How would you answer that?
07:13888-957-9570.
07:15How would you answer that?
07:16If they win and they get to 5-1?
07:17If they win this weekend, do you 100%, without a shadow of a doubt, want Mack Jones to start Sunday night football Atlanta Falcons-Levi's Stadium October 19th?
07:31Absolutely.
07:32And it's not only the fact that you win, but even if he wins in an ugly fashion, you get to 5-1.
07:38And now you're building up so much time and space to where you get into what I think is the real part of the conversation, which is if you get to urgency and importance, then you look at it and you think, okay, man, we absolutely need to win this game to make the playoffs.
07:54Maybe you go to a more limited Brock Purdy than you do Mack Jones.
07:58If you think Brock is better, then yeah, that decision becomes tougher.
08:02If you're 5-1 and you're stacking wins and you've got all of this built-up house money or equity, whatever you want to call it, then yeah, if you believe that Brock is better, they do, you do, I do, whoever else does doesn't really matter.
08:16They do is the most important thing.
08:18So if you're 5-1, then all right, Brock, you're 89% healthy, let's get you to 93.
08:25And then they beat Atlanta, let's get you to 97.
08:28You're under less pressure at that point, I think, to not rush him back, but to turn to him if he's not totally ready.
08:36I will totally surprise you and say no.
08:38I know.
08:39But not for the reason that you think.
08:42Not because you're the president of Pakistan?
08:43No, but I'm keeping that title.
08:45Yep.
08:46Did I win the election again this week?
08:48Always.
08:49Landslide.
08:50Thank you, that's exciting.
08:51I'll tell my one name on the ballot.
08:53Tell my constituents.
08:54One of those classic one name on the ballot elections.
08:56Once again, done a really good job.
08:59No, like, here's what I would say.
09:01I find the whole conversation fascinating from the standpoint of we feel like we know these percentages and we don't.
09:10I subscribe to week-to-week league, and you'll hear coaches say that a lot.
09:15Matt LaFleur said it earlier this year when he got really ticked at one of his players when they were 2-0, and they did an interview where they're like, I think we can go undefeated.
09:24And newsflash, the Packers haven't won a game since.
09:27They've had a bye, a tie, and a loss at Cleveland.
09:29And they're 2-1-1.
09:30And LaFleur's like, I keep telling these guys, he goes, I'm obviously not talking loud enough.
09:36This is a week-to-week league.
09:39Now, Brock Purdy did some work on the side today.
09:42So, can you tell me unequivocally that he's not 100% Wednesday?
09:50I mean, I know it feels like that.
09:52And some people are like, never going to be 100% with turf toe.
09:55I don't know.
09:56I don't know.
09:57And the other thing is, to me, the most under-discussed thing over the last two weeks is, Max hurt too.
10:06And the chances of him coming out of this game with an injury designation, I would argue, seem pretty high.
10:15So, to me, there's enough fuzziness around this, in terms of which one is the healthier quarterback, is Brock close to 100%,
10:24and what if they win, but it's like an ugly one?
10:29What if it's a defensive struggle?
10:31What if they win 13-10?
10:32So, I'm not going to tell you no, 100%, he shouldn't start by any stretch.
10:39But I want to know those circumstances.
10:42And I think that's fair.
10:43I want to know, did Mack actually play well?
10:45I want to know, is he healthy?
10:48And then, I would love some sort of definition on Brock's health that we still don't have.
10:54The 49ers, I don't even know which foot it is.
10:56Do you?
10:57No.
10:57I don't even know which foot it is.
10:58I think it's the right, but we all were having this debate out there in the green room about
11:01which one it is.
11:03And, you know, for me, the fact that he's already out, and he probably won't make the trip,
11:07I would guess.
11:08Because if you're out, why would you fly him to Tampa for him to be out?
11:12A little moral support?
11:13Yeah, but come on.
11:14You'll tell Mack, like, on this third down play, here's what works.
11:17I don't know.
11:18I mean, I don't know if that really has added value on a six-hour flight, and I've made that
11:22flight boop.
11:23And it's, you know, it's a little bit longer than you think.
11:26So, if you think that Brock is close, you leave Brock here, he gets treatment, he gets
11:31better, and then maybe he starts against Atlanta.
11:33But, for me, it becomes more about where you are in the season.
11:37It's October.
11:39And if you rush Brock back, and I know it wouldn't be rushing him back.
11:42I don't know.
11:42And maybe he gets hurt against Atlanta.
11:44Well, now, he might be out another month.
11:46No, I'm certainly not in favor of that.
11:48Let's squeeze one in.
11:49Hassan in Milpitas, 888-957-9570.
11:53The question is, if the Niners win with Mack Jones on Sunday, do you automatically already
11:58want to sign up for another one on Sunday Night Football next weekend?
12:02Hassan, thanks for calling.
12:03What's up?
12:06Hey, guys.
12:07Can you hear me?
12:08Yes, we can.
12:10Hey.
12:11All right.
12:11Yeah, so, I personally believe that you just keep rolling with it, right?
12:16I mean, if the guy's playing well, he's winning games, you've got a really great defense.
12:22You've got players around him that believe in him, they support him.
12:26So, I think the team just rolls with it.
12:28Now, you guys made a good point.
12:31If he's struggling, if they lose a game, you know, those wins really cover a lot of the issues.
12:36So, I think you just keep rolling with him.
12:38I like what I've seen with Mack Jones, and I even liked him back when he got drafted with
12:44the Patriots, it's really polarizing, like, you know, how is this guy, you know, going
12:48to fill in the shoes of Tom Brady?
12:51So, he fits really well in Shanahan's system, and he's showing it.
12:54I mean, I know he's a little banged up, but, you know, that's my thoughts.
12:58I'll kind of take your comments off air.
13:00Okay.
13:01One other thing is, one other thing, I wanted to comment on one more thing.
13:06It was not Belichick in New England.
13:09It was all Tom Brady.
13:10So, thank you guys.
13:11Have a great day.
13:12All right, Hassan.
13:13Appreciate it.
13:14I mean, I think most people, I don't think anything is ever all one person.
13:18I don't think that's how sports works.
13:20But, I mean, Tom, certainly, I remember when we were doing that argument, Bill or Brady?
13:25Bill or Brady?
13:25Sure.
13:26Brady.
13:26Yeah, I mean, he won the argument with what happened in Tampa.
13:29I guess, but what happened in that first season, and Drew Bledsoe joined the morning
13:33show yesterday, AFC Championship game, Brady gets hurt, and he is knocked out.
13:39They're up 7-3, and Bledsoe comes in, and they score a touchdown, and Bledsoe leads
13:43him to the victory, and they basically took Pittsburgh apart with Drew, and then two weeks
13:48later, ah, back to Tom.
13:50Yeah.
13:50And so?
13:51Yeah.
13:52No, like, I mean, yes, there's things happening around these people, coaching for sure.
