00:00And maybe somebody like Steph Curry, like an NBA 1, is maybe the only thing that sort of feels comparable to me.
00:07There's nothing like finding out that you're about to play a football game without your quarterback.
00:13There's nothing harder. There's nothing worse.
00:17And so they tried to upgrade this position this offseason, and I hope it works.
00:21Yes, and they did so on March 14th, where they went out and paid money, real money,
00:28$5 million guaranteed, $7 million over two years to bring in a backup that they could look at and say,
00:34all right, it's your time. Go out and win us a game.
00:37And you go to New Orleans, a team that is not top third.
00:41They're probably not middle third in football.
00:43They're probably a bottom third team.
00:45And you go there with a couple of people missing and your quarterback.
00:49My expectation is still for them to go out and win the game.
00:53This is why you paid Mac Jones the way you paid him.
00:56That's an interesting word, your expectation.
00:58And, by the way, for those of you, maybe if you're just kind of bee-bopping around,
01:02popping around, what Kyle Shanahan did report about an hour and a half ago,
01:07we will have for you in just moments.
01:08We won't let you hear it from the horse's mouth.
01:12That's a big word for me, expectation.
01:14I understand that Vegas is still telling us their favor.
01:16I get that, you know, they're the 49ers.
01:19Like, they're okay.
01:21They're supposed to win.
01:22They're playing the Saints.
01:24Mac Jones is a big-name backup quarterback.
01:26Kyle wanted to draft him four years ago.
01:29Maybe.
01:30All of these things are going to factor into a word like that.
01:33But, for me, that's the word that goes away when you lose your quarterback.
01:38I don't know what the hell to expect.
01:41I have no idea what to expect.
01:43I mean, you could do that for almost any game.
01:45And if you look just at week one in the NFL, how many upsets were there?
01:50Teams that were, you know, favored to win but lost the game outright?
01:54Probably at least one.
01:55Not a lot.
01:56Oh, sure.
01:56There was.
01:57I mean, I'm trying to look.
01:58Like, I do know that survivor pools really, they held firm last week.
02:03They pretty much held firm.
02:05I think the one we're doing here at work, nobody lost.
02:09Nobody lost.
02:10So, if you took the Cardinals, you were fine.
02:12If you took the Broncos, you had to sweat.
02:14But you were fine.
02:16Like, upsets last week.
02:17Let me look.
02:18I think the Chargers were an underdog.
02:20You and I both thought they were going to win.
02:21And they did.
02:23Let's see.
02:25Oh, the Raiders were an underdog.
02:27Very slight.
02:28Two-point.
02:29They won that game.
02:31I have no idea who was favored in the Dolphins-Colts game.
02:34Whatever.
02:35The Steelers-Jets game was a tight spread.
02:38Commanders, if you had them, no problem.
02:42You know, the Niners were favored.
02:43They won.
02:44The Packers were a slight favor over the Lions.
02:46They won.
02:47Same with the Rams.
02:47And then the Bills and Ravens was a one-point game and was, like, about a one- or two-point spread.
02:53So, yeah.
02:54Nothing major.
02:56So, yes.
02:57You're, of course.
02:58It's sports.
02:59I don't know what to expect.
03:01I'm just saying when a person at this position comes in, brand new team, new system, really hasn't been all that good in his history as an NFL quarterback anyway,
03:14I'm going to release expectations and just let curiosity take over.
03:19I'll tell you in the second half what I expect.
03:22I need to see him play first, though.
03:24I have no idea what the hell it's going to look like.
03:26And that's fair.
03:27And I think that my expectations lie in a number of different places.
03:31One, you still have Kyle Shanahan calling plays.
03:35And you've got Christian McCaffrey, who's been amazing.
03:38And you go to New Orleans, a team that really isn't that good.
03:42They play better against Arizona than I thought they would.
03:45But Arizona is probably the fourth-best team in your division.
03:49Maybe they're better than that.
03:51We don't yet know.
03:52New Orleans, to me, was not super impressive.
03:55So you go there, and it's not a hostile environment.
03:58It'll be loud.
04:00But you've got a backup quarterback who will be making his 50th start.
04:04This is not just some punchy who you're throwing in some stiff.
04:09This guy's been to the playoffs as a starter.
04:12So I don't think this step down is as big as it was when you had Mullins or Bethard or Dobbsy
04:19or even Brandon Allen, for crying out loud.
04:22Yeah, that wasn't good when that happened last year.
04:25All right.
04:25888-957-9570.
04:27Let's play with that.
04:29Your expectations for Sunday now are what?
04:33888-957-9570.
04:35We'll take your calls right now.
04:36Here's Kyle Shanahan today on the injuries.
04:38All right.
04:39Injuries for today.
04:40Yeetour will not practice knee.
04:43McCaffrey will not practice calf slash vet day.
04:47Trent Williams won't practice knee slash vet day.
04:50Nick Bosa won't practice vet day.
04:51Brock Purdy won't practice left shoulder toe.
04:54Juwan Jennings won't practice shoulder.
04:57Jordan James, limited finger.
04:59Jordan Watkins, limited ankle.
05:00Ben Bartsch, limited knee and elbow.
05:03Okay.
05:03It's a long list.
05:04That's a long list.
05:05There are a lot of body parts in there.
05:08Whenever you have something slash vet day, I'm just like, okay, vet day.
05:12It's a vet day.
05:12That's right.
05:13So don't worry about Christian McCaffrey.
05:14Don't worry about Trent Williams.
05:15Certainly don't worry about Nick Bosa.
05:17They're fine.
05:18They're just taking vet days.
05:19The good news that's tucked into all of that that no one really cares about because
05:24you've never seen him play, but I'm excited about him.
05:26Jordan Watkins is getting close to being ready.
05:28I think he might play in this game.
05:31Rookie wide receiver that had a wonderful camp, and I think that kind of changes the ingredients
05:36of the stew when you're talking about Juwan's shoulder, Kendrick Boyne joining the team,
05:42and all of these different things that are going on at the wide receiver position.
05:45I hope Watkins gets a little run, but he's going to have to do it without his quarterback.
05:50Right, and a little bit of run depends on the kind of game flow you're looking at because Marquez Valdez-Scantling
05:58and Russell Gage, they got a little run.
06:00Neither one got a target, and the same thing with Sky Moore.
06:03So you might have Watkins run around out there a little bit, but ultimately your offense from a passing standpoint
06:09is going to be Ricky Pearsall, Jawan Jennings if he's able to go, and then a mixed bag of Tonjes, Juszczyk, McCaffrey, Farrell.
06:19It's going to be, it's a Shanahan game where he's going to have to get super creative with how he deploys his five eligibles,
06:27and I do think you're going to see Robinson and McCaffrey on the field at the same time, which we didn't see in week one.
06:33I would hope so.
06:34I would hope so.
06:35So, yeah, I mean, the good news about this, again, I'd rather have this game this weekend with the Niners
06:41knowing all week that they don't have Brock Purdy as opposed to him getting hurt in Series 1,
06:47and then you've got a fire drill, and it's like, okay, Mac, go out there and execute a game plan that you're not good at.
06:53You know, like, hey, offensive line, now we've got a quarterback who's not going to have the same escapability.
06:59He does not have the legs that Brock Purdy has, and that's become a big part of what the 49ers do.
07:05Here's the money one.
07:06This is what y'all need to hear.
07:08And then you tell me when you think you're going to see Brock Purdy play football again.
07:12Listen to Kyle.
07:14He's asked specifically about Sunday.
07:17Any further sense about whether Brock will be able to play on Sunday?
07:22I think it's a long shot.
07:23Is it possible that Purdy's injury could be a multi-week thing?
07:26I think that's possible.
07:27I think that's the toe more so than the shoulder.
07:29Yes.
07:30Yes.
07:31Yeah.
07:31Could be a multi-week injury.
07:34How did the injury happen, Kyle?
07:37Brock, did someone step on his foot in the pocket?
07:38Do you know how the toe injury happened?
07:40I think it happened scrambling.
07:43I think when Love tackled him by the sideline.
07:45I believe it happened.
07:47Were you aware he was playing through that in the game, or is it just something you found out later?
07:51No, I was aware.
07:51Oh, that's kind of interesting, isn't it?
07:55And I don't know, like, I've never had turf toe.
07:58I think most people don't even know what the hell that is.
08:01No, it's agony.
08:02You know, I've had it, of course.
08:04Have you really?
08:05It's really.
08:06How the hell did you get turf toe?
08:08Playing basketball, where you go to make a cut, and you just jam your foot into the hardwood,
08:13and your toe between your big toe from the end to your foot, like in the middle,
08:18it just, like, bulbuses up, it throbs up, and sometimes it gets black and blue.
08:23Okay, well, hold on a second.
08:25Kyle was asked, is this turf toe?
08:29Can you say he has turf toe?
08:31If you want me to.
08:32That's a generic thing for anything on the bottom of the big toe,
08:35and since it's halfway between the side and the bottom, that's why we don't say turf toe,
08:38but it's the third time you've asked me, so I'll call it turf toe for you if you want.
08:43It's the third time you've asked me.
08:45Love it.
08:46Kyle Shanahan, this might be, and we've had some zingers already this year.
08:50We've had some good answers.
08:51We've had questionable concern.
08:53We've had, is Jake Moody your quarterback today?
08:55Yeah, absolutely.
08:57What about tomorrow?
08:58No idea.
08:59And then there's this.
09:01Is it turf toe?
09:02If you want it to be, listen to this again.
09:06Can you say he has turf toe?
09:07If you want me to.
09:09That's a generic thing for anything on the bottom of the big toe,
09:11and since it's halfway between the side and the bottom,
09:13that's why we don't say turf toe, but it's the third time you've asked me,
09:16so I'll call it turf toe for you if you want.
09:18Did you say it was turf toe if you want me to?
09:21All right, then the next question should be, did you say that Brock Purdy is playing?
09:27Well, if you want me to.
09:28Right.
09:28Well, then say it, Kyle.
09:30Say that Brock Purdy is going to play through this injury.
09:33Say it.
09:34Say it now.
09:35Yeah, I don't think he's going to.
09:36Don't think that he's going to say it because, you know, he doesn't know and stuff,
09:40and you've got to see how the toe responds,
09:42but you mentioned it earlier, and you made a great point about preparation.
09:46If you at all have doubt about whether or not your quarterback's going to be there,
09:50and there's clearly a lot of doubt,
09:53you've got to use every second to get Mack Jones up to speed.
09:57And then if you get to Sunday and Brock suddenly is like,
10:00hey, coach, my toe feels a whole lot better,
10:02well, then you can flip Brock back in the game because he's got all the experience,
10:06and you could just change it on the fly that way.
10:09You can't change it the other way, like you were saying.
10:11Uno Mas is Mack Jones ready to go.
10:15Mack knows how to play the position.
10:16He can play well in the pocket, distributes the ball well,
10:18sees coverage as well, can play fast in there.
10:21He's got a lot of good film from the NFL with his experience,
10:25and obviously college.
10:26Tough guy who will hang in there and deliver the ball where he needs to go.
10:29Okay, so an endorsement of Mack Jones,
10:32who very likely will be the Niners' starting quarterback in New Orleans.
10:36And I wanted to draft him and stuff, and I got talked out of it by somebody,
10:39and so we ended up with Trey Lance and stuff,
10:41but I've always had my eye on Mack, and I really like him a lot and stuff.
10:44Look, at some point today, I actually would love to briefly dial back
10:50and just find what do you believe actually happened in that draft?
10:54Do you believe that Kyle Shanahan traded up to get Mack Jones,
11:00or do you believe that he did not, or do you believe that it was a smokescreen,
11:04or do you believe that somebody did change his mind,
11:06or do you believe that nobody could change Kyle Shanahan's mind
11:10about what quarterback he wanted to take?
11:12Like, what do you think actually happened?
11:14I think that he got his mind changed by Trey Lance and by scouts.
11:19When he saw Trey Lance and you got to meet him and you realize, you know,
11:23he's a smart guy and he checks a lot of boxes for Kyle
11:27and he's got this unbelievable athleticism,
11:30I think that as a group think, they all kind of pivoted and thought,
11:33we got to get this guy.
11:35I want one of them.
11:36Huge, huge five quarterback top 15 picks.
11:41And none of them, right?
11:43None of them.
11:44Like, some of them, they're in the league, they're okay.
11:46Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields.
11:47Yeah, yeah.
11:47But, like, nobody's a star.
11:50Not a star, no.
11:51None of them.
