00:00I like reading about it.
00:01I want to know how the players are doing.
00:03I want to know who did what, what looks like this, what looks like that.
00:07The Niner and Bronco media widely reporting today, for example,
00:12that Jordan Watkins, the rookie wide receiver, looked great.
00:18Rave reviews, dibs.
00:21So.
00:22So.
00:23It's better than the opposite.
00:25It is.
00:26And I'm not.
00:26Like Ricky Pearsall can't get off of press man.
00:30He can't run.
00:31No, I like, I guess, I guess the point I'm trying to make is
00:35what if Brock Purdy had thrown four touchdowns instead of two picks?
00:40So.
00:41Like, I'm not, I'm not going to go in on that either,
00:44but I can tell it's one of those days people would like to talk
00:47about Brock Purdy and quarterbacks a little bit.
00:50So let's, let's further what we already brought up.
00:53And I want to highlight what our team put together with regard to
00:59Brock Purdy and Jared Goff.
01:01And this is just a sampling because you can pick whatever numbers or stats
01:04you want.
01:05Like we don't necessarily.
01:06Numbers are numbers.
01:06Well, they are.
01:06And I don't, like we don't have quarterback rating here or whatever.
01:09But, but the bottom line is basically since Purdy became a starter,
01:13if you go back to that date, the guys put together the numbers for Purdy
01:17and Jared Goff over that stretch.
01:1942 games for Purdy, 43 for Jared Goff.
01:24Purdy went 27 and 15.
01:26Goff went 33 and 10.
01:28Completion percentage, 67 for Purdy, 68 for Goff.
01:33Goff throws for a few more yards per game,
01:35but also attempts a lot more per game.
01:38His touchdown to interception ratio, a little bit better.
01:413 to 1 versus more like 2.6 to 1.
01:44However, Brock runs the ball a little bit better.
01:47Nine rushing TDs to only two rushing TDs, et cetera, et cetera.
01:51And they both make 52 to 53 million dollars per year.
01:56One fan base, Jared Goff.
02:00Jared Goff.
02:01They can't stop yelling his name.
02:03And what has he ever won for them?
02:05Nothing.
02:05In fact, he was the quarterback who was at the helm of one of the biggest playoff
02:09collapses that the modern NFL has ever known.
02:12And it was at the hands of Brock Purdy.
02:14Throw that into the bucket.
02:15They've played one another in the playoffs.
02:17Brock Purdy was the one who came out on top.
02:20Yes, the ball hit a helmet.
02:22Yes, the Lions dropped the ball on fourth down.
02:25Yes, we can do all of these things.
02:26I think at minimum, you have to give this a nod for being a good comp.
02:34Instead of like, is Brock Purdy Josh Allen?
02:37Well, what if he's Jared Goff?
02:40And for many of you 49er fans, I want to acknowledge you first.
02:44I know this is plenty for you.
02:47I know you like Brock Purdy.
02:49I know you're excited about this season.
02:51I want to see and hear you first.
02:53But it's sports radio, and what ends up getting more of the sound and the vibe
02:58are the people who are the naysayers.
03:00I don't think Jared Goff has any naysayers in Detroit.
03:03None.
03:05None.
03:05And I reject the idea that this is solely the dynamic of the Lions have been
03:10traditionally a poor franchise, and the 49ers have traditionally been a good
03:14franchise.
03:15It has to be deeper than that.
03:17Why is Jared Goff good enough for every Lion fan?
03:20But Brock Purdy seemingly is not, or at least you look at him with all kinds of
03:25skepticism if you're a 49er fan.
03:28Some 49er fans.
03:29Sure.
03:30I think it's very much a myriad answer because part of it is the franchise.
03:36The 49er fan, who is not 21 years old, remembers the glory days, and you remember
03:41Montana and Young.
03:42So the standard is set much higher than it is in Detroit, and outside of Matt
03:48Stafford, who had great numbers but didn't win a lot of games, you'd be hard-pressed
03:52to name a lot of other Lions quarterbacks that they've had over the course of our
03:56lifetime or a younger lifetime.
03:58Matt Stafford.
03:59Right.
03:59That's what I said.
04:00Outside of Matt Stafford.
04:01Outside of Matt Stafford.
04:02Outside of Stafford, you're talking about Eric Hipple and a bunch of other guys that you
04:08probably...
04:08A lot of Erics, I think.
04:09Not any P.
04:10But Stafford is literally the one you're coming off of, too, when you get Goff.
04:15Traded for one another.
04:16So I could also argue back that, like, dude, for more than a decade now, the Lions have
04:21had a good quarterback.
04:23Right, but you had a good quarterback, but you didn't have a good team.
04:25And I don't know how many playoff appearances Stafford had in Detroit.
04:30I think it was one.
04:31Yeah, exactly.
04:32And he was good, and Megatron was good, and you had Barry Sanders before that, and you
04:36had players, but you just didn't win.
04:38And so I think as a Lions fan, you now have a team that is not only relevant, but it's
04:43a good team, and so it's easier, I think, to be all-in on Jared Goff.
04:48Easier than it is for a Niner fan to be all-in on Brock Purdy.
04:51Fair answer, except for, you know, you're talking about, like, they've had a good team and they've
04:57won while Jared Goff is there.
04:59Largely the same answer for Brock Purdy.
05:01Sure.
05:02Smaller sample.
05:04And yes, coming off of a bad year.
05:06I, like...
05:07And three playoff appearances for Stafford in Detroit.
05:10Oh, three?
05:10Yeah.
05:11Really?
05:11They lost in 2011.
05:12They didn't win any of them, though, right?
05:13They lost in 2014.
05:14They lost in 2016.
05:15Oh, good for him.
05:16He won a whole bunch.
05:18Three times.
05:18Never won, though.
05:19That was crazy.
05:20Yeah.
05:20Yeah.
05:20And Jared Goff went and won.
05:23And then lost.
05:24Yep.
05:24And then last year, one seed, right?
05:27Lost.
05:28Yeah.
05:29Home.
05:29Tough.
05:30Lost.
05:31That's a tough one.
05:32To a rookie.
05:33To a rookie.
05:34Do you see what I mean?
05:36Like, how about that?
05:37Has this fan base reacting if last year Levi's Stadium had the one seed hosting the commanders,
05:47Jaden Daniels comes in, shows out, and upsets you, and moves on?
05:53And Goff threw three interceptions in that game.
05:55Goff threw three interceptions in that game.
05:58I heard he threw three interceptions in that game.
05:59We'll have Evan Giddings check that info.
06:02But he threw three interceptions in that game.
06:06I actually was watching...
06:07You know part of the reason I wanted to talk about this today?
06:09I was watching...
06:10Did you know that Netflix has a new season?
06:12Another...
06:13Not new.
06:13It's another season of Quarterback is out.
06:16Do you know who's in it?
06:17No.
06:17Okay.
06:18It is Jared Goff.
06:21Her cousins again.
06:23How did that happen, by the way?
06:25He's available.
06:26He's got free time.
06:27Cousins did it last year, and they're like, eh, man, he is such a huge personality.
06:32I think we should do it again.
06:34No doubt.
06:35And it's like...
06:35But anyway, it's Cousins, it's Goff, and now I'm actually already blanking on it.
06:41Joe Burrow.
06:42Joe Burrow.
06:43And Joe Burrow has got to...
06:45He's interesting now.
06:47But Goff, so far, in the first handful of episodes that I've watched, Goff is getting
06:53kind of the most run.
06:55And it's easy.
06:57Right?
06:57He went through...
06:58He got married.
06:59He's got a beautiful model wife.
07:01He's Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee.
07:05So he's sitting there meeting with students that he's getting scholarships for.
07:08Mom and Dad came down my road last fall.
07:12We haven't gotten to that episode yet, but I can't wait.
07:15Yeah.
07:15Yeah.
07:15Like, episode six.
07:17The Dibbers comes to town.
07:18Dude.
07:19Yeah.
07:19Anyway.
07:20Anyway.
07:20But, right, it's very wholesome.
07:22It's very milk and cookies.
07:24And it's Detroit Lions.
07:26And so it has this...
07:27It has that vibe.
07:28Like, oh, we've never done this before.
07:30And here's Jared Goff.
07:32But that's a big part of what sort of clicked in my mind last night.
07:37This franchise and this fan base...
07:42I know where they've been.
07:43I get it.
07:44They talk about Jared Goff like he's a god-like figure.
07:49Jared Goff.
07:51Jared Goff.
07:51Jared Goff.
07:53He never won a Super Bowl.
07:54No.
07:54He has lost more playoff games than he's won since he got there.
07:58Check that.
07:59I think that's right.
07:59Two and two.
08:00Oh, I thought he was one and two.
08:01Two and two.
08:02So, you know...
08:03Back that up.
08:03...has not been to the big game in this uniform.
08:06Nope.
08:07But he's very good.
08:10Nobody questions that.
08:12I don't know how many people actually question if you just say that about Brock Purdy.
08:15He's good.
08:16He's good.
08:17It's draftism.
08:18Well, okay, yeah.
08:20It all comes back to that.
08:21One was...
08:22Was he number one or number two?
08:23I think he was number one overall.
08:24Yeah.
08:24Number one.
08:24Okay.
08:25Number one.
08:25One was one and one was last.
08:27One was first.
08:28One was last.
08:29So, yes.
08:30That's probably part of it.
08:33But, dude.
08:34Jared Goff has been somebody else's take out the trash.
08:38Brock Purdy's never been that.
08:40Well, I mean, I wouldn't go that far to say he was...
08:41He was somebody else's take out the trash.
08:43I mean, they traded him for Matt Stafford and they got...
08:48And a crap ton of draft capital, which was essentially like, here, will you take Jared
08:53Goff and give you all of our draft picks?
08:55Sure.
08:55And the Rams did win the Super Bowl with Stafford.
08:57And they did.
08:57So, that's fair.
08:58I mean, Jared Goff, four and five in the playoffs in his career.
09:01He's been there five different times.
09:04And so, you know, now he's with Detroit.
09:06And if you look at that game last year, and I was just refreshing myself with that game,
09:11it doesn't help Jared Goff's case that Detroit's defense is terrible.
09:14Well, Detroit's defense last year was absolutely crushed by injury.
09:19Yes.
09:19Like, crushed by injury.
09:21And so, you got into that game, and even early on when they had the lead, Washington
09:26was scoring every time they touched the ball.
09:28Like, literally every time.
09:30And they were hot.
09:31They were on one at the end of the year last year.
09:33They were, but also, I mean, Detroit's defense was hot knife through butter.
09:36Like, Daniels won a fantasy title for your boy.
09:39Daniels was out of his mind down the stretch last year.
09:41You won one title in your four leagues?
09:43Yeah.
09:44It's not bad.
09:45No, that's great.
09:46It's like Matt Chapman, one for four.
09:48Dude.
09:49Chappy.
09:49If you win a title a year, you take that.
09:54Well, you're in four leagues, so it's watered down a little bit.
09:58No, like, if you make the playoffs and make a run, you expect that.
10:02You don't expect a title.
10:04Titles are hard.
10:05Dude, no doubt.
10:06Trust me, I can't even make the playoffs.
10:07I mean, right?
10:08I can't even sniff the off.
