00:00As you can always tell who the starting quarterback is going to be by who speaks on Thursdays.
00:04Well, today, that was Brock Purdy, and he was about as open as we've ever heard him
00:12with regard to all of the things that he has faced and gone through this year.
00:16So take a listen. Here's Brock Purdy today from Santa Clara.
00:20Yeah, I feel really good. I feel healthy and excited to be back and ready to go and lead the guys.
00:27So I'm really excited about this week. It's been a good week so far, and got a couple more days, obviously.
00:32Got to finish out strong this week, but I feel really good.
00:35How frustrating has this all been over the last several weeks?
00:38Yeah, it's been frustrating. Obviously, going into year four, I wanted to come in and play my best ball so far in my career
00:45and was really excited about it. Come in, play Seattle, and win on the road, and just feeling really good about the year.
00:52And then all of a sudden, I'm just dealing with the toe thing, and it has been frustrating.
00:57And just the time missed and seeing our team and an opportunity to go and win games, put a season together, man,
01:06and feel good about it. So it's just been frustrating for sure.
01:09But at the same time, this is just the cards that I've been dealt with, and I'm not trying to be what was me kind of thing.
01:15We still have seven games here to go and put something together, and our goals are right in front of us.
01:21So that's how I'm looking at it. I'm excited about it.
01:23Playing against Jacksonville, was that a mistake?
01:25No. Going into that week, I felt good. I really did. And I thought I was going to be good to go.
01:30I just unfortunately got caught in a bad position with my toe again and just re-aggravated it.
01:36And so that's sort of just what happened. And looking back on it, man, like, you know, I'm a competitor.
01:42I want to go out and lead, and I felt good throughout the week to be able to go out and lead our guys to win
01:46and play a good quarterback. And it's just unfortunate I got caught in that position.
01:50The second injury took longer to recover than the first injury?
01:52I mean, honestly, I don't really know. Obviously, I re-aggravated it.
01:56And so for me, all the decisions that we made were, how do I feel week by week?
02:01And we went from there. Going into the Jacksonville game, I felt good after two weeks of rest.
02:07And then, boom, I got caught in an awkward position.
02:11And then this time after, it's just been, you know, take it one week at a time, one day at a time.
02:17How do you feel? Can you go this week? No. Can you go next week?
02:19And we'll see when we get there. And that's just how it's been.
02:22And so here we are after six games. I feel really good now.
02:26So that's just the decisions that we've made and the plan that we've had.
02:30More about when you're running, Brock, or your follow-through.
02:33Like, where have you felt it over the last, like, few weeks on where it might be tender?
02:38Just more so movement, you know, running and scrambling and all those kind of things.
02:44You know, dropping back and throwing, it's been pretty good for a while.
02:48But to play quarterback in the NFL, things happen.
02:51And to be myself and play like myself, you know, I have to move a little bit.
02:55And I just wasn't able to get there, you know, for a while.
03:00And so now I feel really good and I feel ready to go.
03:04Brock, was there any point during this where surgery was brought to you as an option or something that you had to consider?
03:09No, no. I had a turf toe variation, if that's what you want to call it.
03:14But, you know, from multiple sources and doctors and everything, we looked at it and they said there's no need for surgery.
03:21We know you guys are competitive. You're also teammates.
03:25When the guy who's replacing you is out there doing as well as he did and you can hear all the chatter that's going on,
03:30is there a side of you that says, man, I need to get back here earlier?
03:33What's going on in your head when all that's happening?
03:35I mean, absolutely love Mack and what he's done.
03:38And he came in and played extremely well, man.
03:40And so and kept our team alive and moving and going.
03:44And so I appreciate him for that and just everything he's brought to our team.
03:48But for me, it's been how do I feel physically?
03:50It has nothing to do with I need to get back out there for the political side of things.
03:55It's been all about how do I feel really good to go out and lead when I do get back.
04:00And so obviously it took six games, sadly, on the second side of things after re-aggravating it.
04:09But I want to be smart about this with my career and everything.
04:12But at the same time, I'm ready to roll.
04:14And we've got seven games ahead of us that I'm really excited about.
04:17As mentioned, Tope probably won't fully heal this season.
04:22How do you navigate that risk for the remainder of the regular season,
04:26even potentially playoffs now that you're returning?
04:31Yeah, I mean, I'm in a really good spot.
04:34Best that I felt this year since hurting it.
04:36And when you play the sport, that's just the case.
04:40Guys are going to play a little banged up or dealing with certain things.
04:43And a lot of times you don't even hear what guys are dealing with.
04:46But they're just going about their business and playing and doing what it takes.
04:51And it's just obviously this took me out of the game.
04:55So everyone knew about it.
04:57But guys are always dealing with things.
04:58But that's just the nature of the sport.
05:02You know, I take a chance stepping out there every time to hurt my other toe.
05:06You know, that's how I'm looking at it.
05:07So I'm going to do whatever it takes to help lead this team.
05:10Like I said, seven more games this year and make a playoff run
05:13and try to go achieve our goal.
05:15So it's right in front of us.
05:16Brock Purdy today in Santa Clara.
05:20No, surgery was never an option.
05:23He did not run from the idea that, yeah, he still feels it.
05:29And that's just life in the NFL.
05:32But also seemed to have kind of a little bit of a quiet confidence about where he is physically right now.
05:41And I think that that's what a lot of people have been hoping for.
05:43It's not so much are you out there pain-free, but it's are you out there, can you perform at full Brock Purdy level?
05:50It sounds like he feels like they're ready to do that.
05:53Yeah, and just a turf toe variant, too, and so he did, which I get it.
05:58And, you know, the true turf toe, I don't know if it's just one ligament and the variant is part that ligament and part another one.
06:04I don't have enough knowledge on turf toe, even though I'm a radio doctor, to know what the turf toe variant is.
06:10And I like this answer about was it a bad idea to go out there against Jacksonville?
06:14And he said, no, I just got caught and my toe got caught into a bad spot.
06:19And that's the way that that happened.
06:21So could it happen again this Sunday?
06:24Absolutely.
06:24His toe could get caught in the exact same spot where his toe is on the ground and he gets pushed over from behind and it folds underneath his body weight and that could be it for the year.
06:35You just never know in this game.
06:36But the fact that it's been so long, I can't help but think that the toe will be more resistant to a re-injury more than it was against Jacksonville.
06:46I think that that's important to sort of like what you're talking about there.
06:49It's kind of important to bring to light this idea because Kyle Shanahan sort of insinuated over the last couple of weeks that playing him against Jacksonville wasn't the right thing to do.
07:01And so that leads to that question.
07:04Was it a mistake?
07:05And he firmly says no.
07:08When you see him floating balls against Jacksonville like he did, I don't know this, but I'm under the impression that's after the re-aggravation.
07:17Not necessarily like, oh, you shouldn't have played him because look what he looks like.
07:22As opposed to, no, he looks like that because he got hurt again.
07:27And should he have come out?
07:28Maybe.
07:29But here's something that I don't ever hear anyone talk about that I have heard from the sort of inside voices at the 49er facility.
07:38Mack Jones was really hurt that week.
07:40Yeah.
07:41And in fact, they deemed him as more hurt than Brock.
07:44So the two questions are, should you have played Brock?
07:48Brock says, I felt good going.
07:49And then you say, okay, but now you've re-injured it and you're floating balls.
07:54Well, why didn't you go to Mack Jones in that point?
07:56Well, Mack Jones was really, really hurt apparently at that time.
08:01So, you know, look, it's ancient history now.
08:06They took a shot.
08:07It didn't work out.
08:09I think they were much more conservative this time around.
08:11So now it's go time again and we can all have our feelings about it.
08:15And I know that most people will just sort of like, you got to keep your feelings until after the game and kind of cherry pick this thing,
08:22which is either he looks great and they win and okay, Brock's back.
08:28Or if he has any sort of a poor performance, then it's going to get loud.
08:34And that's life.
08:35There's no avoiding that.
08:37That's the way.
08:37But for me, I love that the 49ers, because Ricky Pearsall, if you haven't heard, is also in.
08:45I can't remember.
08:46It must have been the Super Bowl season almost two seasons ago.
08:51The last time the 49er offense at least entered a game on paper looking this strong in terms of health.
08:59Yeah.
08:59Everybody's in.
09:00I'm thinking about last year when McCaffrey came back.
09:02You already had Iyuk, who was out, and a couple of those games, I know the Green Bay game, you didn't have Brock Purdy.
09:09And so by the time you got to Buffalo, which is when McCaffrey got hurt, you didn't have Iyuk because he'd already gotten hurt.
09:16And then you had Brock Purdy back, but then McCaffrey got hurt.
09:19So to your point, last year was kind of a, oh, you're back.
09:22And then now you're hurt.
09:23And McCaffrey missed the opener.
09:25We were down there outside the stadium.
09:27And the news broke about 90 minutes before kick that he wouldn't play.
09:31So, yeah, last year was kind of an up and down and on and off.
09:35I'm looking at the injury report from today.
09:37A couple things did pop up that might be a little troubling.
09:42Diamantor Lenore popped today as limited with a calf.
09:46Interesting.
09:46Yesterday he was not listed on the injury report.
09:49Not at all, no.
09:49And you had D Winters, who is still limited, and he's listed as knee, comma, knee.
09:55Yeah, he's both knees.
09:56Both knees, and he actually hasn't been playing great, but you don't have many other linebackers
10:00who can play as mediocre as he has played.
10:04And the only other one is Alfred Collins with a hip, and he was limited yesterday.
10:08He's still limited.
10:09So just someone to keep an eye on.
10:11But, again, this week, your injury report is shorter than your opponent.
10:16Way shorter.
10:17Second straight week.
10:17Way shorter.
10:18Yeah, the Cardinals are really banged up, especially on offense.
10:22And, of course, the headliner there, Marvin Harrison Jr. is out.
10:26They're listing Kyler Murray as out.
10:29Obviously, he's on IR.
10:30I think they want him out.
10:31He's not even listed among their 18.
10:33Yeah.
10:33Nor is Zay Jones.
10:35Because he's on IR as well.
10:36Yeah, they're on IR.
10:37But they've got 18 players who are listed on their injury report.
10:40Yeah, no, they're banged up.
10:41And that's not even including the two you just mentioned.
10:44Marvin Harrison, appendicitis.
10:46He had surgery Monday.
10:47He is definitely out.
10:49Correct, yeah.
10:49No, the Niners have a group that they should take advantage of.
10:54But their defense is still not that great.
10:58And so I still maintain the Cardinals are dangerous because we can this, that, the other about who's good at quarterback.
11:05They're not playing any good quarterbacks over the next month and a half.
11:08That's all true.
11:09But we've watched this before.
11:11If you don't rush an NFL quarterback, even a bad one, will throw a good ball over the middle of the field and beat you.
11:18And so we'll see.
11:19We'll see.
11:20That pass rush is going to have to be better than it was against the Rams.
11:24But at least the Niners offensively now, they'll throw some firepower at the Cardinals in the other direction.
11:30You'd love to see the Niners be able to be multifaceted, run the ball, throw the ball, put up 30 points.
11:36To me, that's the game plan this week or what you'd like to see.
11:39All right, let's go out to the phones.
11:41888-957-9570.
11:44GPD in Hayward.
11:45Great to see you last week.
11:46Great to talk to you today.
11:48GPD.
11:50Hey, how you doing, gentlemen?
11:53What's up?
11:54Love your show.
11:58Always love your show.
12:00Thank you, GPD.
12:01What you got?
12:02We know that.
12:02We love you, too.
12:03What you got going on?
12:06I'm going to tell you how it's going to go.
12:07The party's playing.
12:10And what's going to happen?
12:12Matt, and I know the whole quarterback controversy.
12:18For one thing, you don't think that Shanahan's tailoring plays for Matt Jones.
12:26He is.
12:26He's a difficult quarterback.
12:27So he tailors and plays and everything for Matt Jones.
12:31And that makes it look good because that's good because that's the way he plays.
12:36And so, therefore, he's doing his job.
12:39That's what he's supposed to do.
12:40And so, but what's going to happen?
12:42If he brings Brock back, if he can handle it, and if he plays, he's going to play like Brock.
12:49But, I can tell you this right now.
12:53If he looks bad, you watch.
12:55He's going to quote, quote, quote, quote, his toes aggravating him.
13:00And he's going to come out and Matt Jones is going to take over.
13:04I really think that they do because it's also optics.
13:10If he looks bad and he ain't doing a good job, bro, you think that they won't pull him
13:16and put Matt Jones in there unless they want to throw the rest of the season away.
13:20Or they're going to give him the chance.
13:22They're going to give him a game or two and see what he can do and bring him back.
13:27But he's rusty.
13:29So, what do you guys think about that?
13:31I really want your honest opinion.
13:33Yeah, I'll throw it at you.
13:34GPD, great to hear from you always.
13:36Here's what I would say.
13:38Is it within the realm of possibility that they, and I don't think they're going to make
13:42up injuries again because that's dangerous.
13:44Because what if they would want him to come back again?
13:47Well, that's what Arizona's doing with Kyler Murray.
13:49I mean, the difference there is, though, that Arizona doesn't want Kyler Murray to be their
13:53quarterback anymore.
13:54Anymore, no.
13:55The 49ers want Brock Purdy to be their quarterback, obviously.
13:58So, would they pull him in favor of Matt Jones?
14:02To me, that depends on how bad he looks.
14:06Like, Brock Purdy is allowed to go out and make a mistake.
14:10Just like Matt Jones or any other player.
14:12Like, I don't think it's, I'm not going to play it this way.
14:16It's not fair to ask any player to go out and be like, if you make one mistake, we're
14:22yanking you.
14:23No, not a quarterback who you're about to pay $53 million a year to.
14:26Not anybody.
14:27Not anybody.
14:27Well, if you're a guy who's a tenuous guy who maybe doesn't have his job, like Spencer
14:32Rattler, okay, enough Rattler.
14:34Let's see Shuck for a while.
14:36But that's a Q, it's not just QB.
14:38Like, go back to Jonathan Kaminga, week one, game one against the Lakers.
14:43I did not love, and the Warriors did not love, his shot selection in the first half.
14:48They didn't yank him.
14:49They didn't yank him.
14:50And then he had a great second half.
14:5282 is different than 17.
14:53It is.
14:54Football is different than basketball, but I just think that's true across the board.
14:57You don't put anyone in if they are one mistake away from getting yanked out of the game.
15:02Now, if he throws three picks, and you're down by seven in the fourth quarter, maybe,
15:08maybe, but I don't like...
15:10Well, think about the Baltimore game on Christmas two years ago, where he threw, I think, four
15:14picks, and...
15:15It hasn't even been five.
15:16Well, the team threw five.
15:17Yeah.
15:17I think he only threw four of the five, but you got late in that game, and you probably
15:21weren't going to win, so you took him out.
15:23You didn't bench him.
15:24Yeah, that's different.
15:25You took him out before it got, like, really, really, really bad.
15:27I think that if you go to Arizona, and he looks bad, and they lose, he still starts the next
15:32week.
15:33I agree.
15:33It would take multiple successive bad performances and losses, I think, before you made this sort
15:39of a move.
15:40Yeah.
15:40I think, like, really bad play.
15:42You know, not a mistake.
15:44Not even two mistakes.
15:45I mean, like, wow, the quarterback looks awful kind of a thing.
15:49And looks rusty, and, you know, three picks, and God, we would have won this if the quarterback
15:53wasn't so bad.
15:54Right, right.
15:55You would need multiple of those games, in my opinion, because you're six and four.
16:00It's not like you are, I don't know, eight and seven, and you need to win both.
16:04If you need to win both these games, and he comes out, and he looks really bad for a half,
16:09then you might make a move, because if it's a double must win, then you're going to be
16:13a little bit more urgent.
16:14I agree with you.
16:17However, I will say this.
16:19Because, really, in the whole layout of the way things are going the rest of the year,
16:24I think I can make the case that this is the biggest game left.
16:28I think I can make that case.
16:30Yeah.
16:31And here's why.
16:32I happen to think that this Cardinal team is more dangerous than the Panthers the following
16:39week.
16:40That's fair.
16:40More dangerous than the Titans in three or four weeks.
16:43For sure.
16:44And actually, even more dangerous than Cleveland, outside of the fact that I know that that's
16:49week 13, no buys, could be weather.
16:52You know I love that spot for Cleveland.
16:53I know.
16:54And we'll see.
16:55It's a different Cleveland.
16:56It's Dylan Gabriel.
16:57They're bad, bad.
16:59And this is a division game.
17:02This is you clinching a winning record in the NFC West if you win this game.
17:08This launches you to 7-4 with a favorable schedule coming up over the month that follows it.
17:14If you lose this one, you truly do fall into a spot where you could get wild card trapped.
17:20If they win this football game this weekend, I believe that there is no stopping the 49ers
17:26from double-digit wins, and they would be very likely to get a playoff spot at the end
17:33of the year.
17:34So, I think in this moment, this is the one, which makes it interesting that they're turning
17:40things back over to their starting quarterback at this time.
17:44I think that's coincidence.
17:46I do believe.
17:46Oh, so do I.
17:47Yeah.
17:47Not suggesting otherwise.
17:48No, I know, and you look at this game, I still think that the Seattle game at the end
17:52of the year will be bigger, and honestly, the Chicago game that will be here, I also think
17:57will be bigger because Chicago still is going to be fighting for their playoff lives, but
18:01if you look at your remaining schedule, you mentioned Tennessee, they are dead last in
18:06DVOA, defense-adjusted value over average, which means the analytics will tell you they
18:12are far and away the worst team.
18:14Cleveland is 30th, and Carolina is 27th in those same rankings.
18:17So, that's what you have coming up.
18:19Arizona's 20th, which is not very good either.
18:23The Niners are 15th, just for some reference, which is at the bottom of the top half.
18:28They are dead average among all football teams, but according to these metrics, you should
18:35beat Arizona, you should beat Chicago, you should beat Carolina and Cleveland and Tennessee.
18:41So, that's five wins right there.
18:43That gets you to 11.
18:44That gets it done.
18:45Let's go to Lucky in the city, who tried to call earlier, and the phone was a little wonky,
18:50but he's back.
18:51What's up, Lucky?
18:53What's up, Mark?
18:54What's up, Ben?
18:56Hey, look, man.
18:57This is very, very, very good 49er news, man.
19:02And the reason why I'm saying this, Mark, and I'm going to go back to a couple of weeks
19:06ago when I said this, we're going to have an up and down season, but we might have a
19:12good shot to make it to the dance, even though our defense is like it is right now, Mark.
19:18I think we can make a good run just like Joe Flacco did with those Baltimore Ravens.
19:24Remember that?
19:24That defense sucked, and he took them there.
19:27I think we have the same opportunity, man.
19:31So, I'm very excited.
19:33A lot of my Niner fans are like, oh, man, I don't know what we're going to do.
19:37Look, man, we still have seven or eight games left, man.
19:39Let's go get this.
19:41Let's get into the dance, and anything's possible after that.
19:44I'm ready, man.
19:45Lucky appreciates you.
19:46Yeah, go Niners.
19:47I'm not really worried or even thinking about what happens when they get to the dance.
19:51To me, it's just getting to the dance.
19:53I do think they will.
19:54I think this is a springboard.
19:56I can't eliminate, like as you said, Chicago will be interesting late in the year.
20:00They might be fighting their playoff lives.
20:02They might be.
20:02They might not be.
20:03I know they're 6-3.
20:04I'm very mindful of the schedule the rest of the way for these teams.
20:08The Niners obviously have a favorable one.
20:10Look at Chicago.
20:11They're at Minnesota this weekend.
20:12Then they get Pittsburgh.
20:13Then they go to Philly.
20:14Then they go to Green Bay.
20:15Then they get a Green Bay and Detroit at the end of the year as well.
20:18Their schedule is a gauntlet.
20:21I don't think that Chicago's going to get four more wins.
20:23I think the Niners are going to fly by Chicago.
20:26Carolina is 5-5, not a threat.
20:29It's all there for them.
20:30It's all there for them if they win the games they're supposed to win,
20:33and this is one of them.
20:34There's five of them left, honestly.
20:36If you look at Indy and Seattle, those are teams that have been better than you,
20:40and those are going to be tough games.
20:41But if you go 5-2, you wind up 11-6.
20:45Really good.
20:46You're in a super spot.
20:47You might be the 6th or 7th seed, but who cares?
20:50You're in the dance.
20:50You're in a super spot.
