00:00A tornado captured on camera stripping away the roofs of at least three homes at
00:13Cherry Crescent in the West Morians area while several other homes in West Trinidad
00:17were damaged due to fallen trees and other debris. The sheer force of the
00:21destruction on one of the roofs of the homes was captured in real time by a
00:25motorist the aftermath of the tornado along Cherry Crescent looked like this a
00:47crumpled heap of metal sheets and wood tossed up in the air and then flung
00:51several feet away. Some residents and others came to survey the damage done
00:56to the homes affected by this disaster. Yvonne Jin Alyong related the ordeal
01:01leading up to this terrifying experience.
01:03I just hear this bad thunder and this big flash of lightning I jump when I look I
01:10look outside I say what the heck the whole sky thing flying all over all kind of I
01:17I don't know what all kind of what is going on.
01:20Concern was etched on the faces of several of the residents as they tried to make
01:24sense of the disaster. Diana Moses who had tenants on the property was also shaken
01:29by the experience since she had only recently changed the roof of the home.
01:33It's fruitful. My heart is very I need to talk to the guy he called me to see what's going on.
01:42Minister of local government Khadija Amin who arrived on the scene within minutes of
01:46the disaster that occurred shortly afternoon, surveyed the damage and gave
01:50assurances that everything will be done to help everyone affected in West
01:53Trinidad including Victoria Gardens and Karanaj by the inclement weather.
01:58It's a very traumatic situation for the families many families had someone at home
02:03what you see because of the heavy rainfall is a lot of soaked furniture, appliances, carpets
02:10and so on a lot of water so they are flooding they are dealing with at this time. Thus far
02:16I have not met any families where anyone has been personally injured and I'm very grateful
02:21for that. Many of these families have already contacted persons who would attend to their roofs.
02:28Some of them indicated that they do have insurance that could cover some of these things but our
02:34objective today is to visit every household and do an assessment. Some of them in the immediate
02:40may need tapelins from us but some of them have already covered their homes.
02:45Already some of the residents were being assisted with tapelins to cover their homes while TNT
02:50spent time in the area ensuring electricity was restored while fire officers assisted with the removal
02:55of debris and other items in the area. Opposition MP for Diego Martin West Hans Deveens was also on
03:02location and said they would do everything to assist all the affected residents to ensure their lives
03:07returned to normalcy as soon as possible.
03:10Tragic event thankfully no loss of life in this situation. We already made the contacts through our office
03:17as well as residents. It is an active community in terms of keeping in contact with the relevant agencies
03:22when things happen. Again it is unfortunate and we will do what we can do however we can assist
03:29to remedy this situation that is in front of us.
03:33The Diego Martin Regional Cooperation and other agencies according to Minister Amin will be assisting
03:37everyone affected in West Trinidad. Mark Besant, TV6 News.
