00:00Tonight on Healthy, Wealthy and Wise.
00:03Hello!
00:04A makeover for a former dancer who's lost her mojo.
00:07I have lost my confidence.
00:10Are you ready to go shopping?
00:11So ready.
00:12Let's go.
00:13I'm still smiling.
00:14Yay!
00:15You won't believe the results.
00:17Oh!
00:18No, I was joking.
00:19A moment superstar chef Gary Meagan will never forget.
00:23Oh, my God.
00:24What?
00:25I just saw something stick its nose out of the air.
00:28And a delicious recipe that will also warm your heart.
00:32Last year, we served 220,000 people.
00:35That is insane.
00:53Hello, and welcome to Healthy, Healthy and Wise.
00:56Whether you're back for another helping or just tuning in for the first time,
01:00you're definitely in the right place.
01:02Welcome.
01:02This is a show where we try and make your life just a little smarter,
01:06a little easier, and hopefully a little bit more fun as well.
01:10No preaching, no pressure.
01:12I am Chrissie Swan, and joining me, as always,
01:15is our resident researcher slash info whisperer, Ash Wicks.
01:19Hey, girl.
01:20Hey, girl.
01:21Now, I have been hired to mainly research and support,
01:25but this is all the money for the swear jar from last episode,
01:29so I need to try and keep you in check.
01:31Me?
01:32You.
01:32Swearing?
01:33Yep.
01:34F*** take that back.
01:37The f*** disrespect.
01:39Okay.
01:40I appreciate you attempting the impossible, my darling.
01:42My pleasure, Chrissie.
01:44Now, this one is close to my heart.
01:46Our resident style guru, Chika, is lending a hand to a woman
01:50who's been through some massive changes.
01:52Her body has changed, her buzzies have changed,
01:55and she is ready to feel at home in her own skin again.
01:58How good.
01:59Her friends knew she deserved this,
02:01so they nominated her for a full wardrobe revamp.
02:05Her friends, how gorgeous.
02:06Today is not just about clothes.
02:09It's about confidence.
02:10Let's take a look.
02:11Hello, Chika.
02:26How are you, Kira?
02:27Thank you for having me.
02:29Thank you for coming.
02:30I'm very excited to come and play with you in your wardrobe.
02:32Woo-hoo!
02:33Before my accident, I was a very confident person.
02:39I was a professional dancer.
02:41We were training in L.A.
02:43I did a flip, dropped, and got a really bad injury.
02:47I couldn't dance anymore.
02:49I lost everything I knew.
02:51I'd always been a dancer.
02:53So when that was taken away, I kind of lost my identity a little bit.
02:59Six months in bed after that, weight on chronic back pain.
03:04It was awful, and I went through a lot.
03:07But since then, I have lost my confidence.
03:14Ooh, what a beautiful bedroom.
03:17And the wardrobe.
03:18Do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do.
03:20Now, tell me, why are we doing this?
03:23Um, okay, so firstly, not much of my stuff fits me.
03:28Okay.
03:28Right.
03:29I've lost 18 kilos and also had a breast reduction.
03:34Oh, my God, you must feel like a new woman.
03:35I do.
03:36We've got to recreate something new just for this beautiful new body you've got.
03:40Yes, absolutely.
03:41Part of my back issues all stemmed from very, very large breasts.
03:46I've had them since I was a teenager.
03:49It started becoming a problem once my back was injured.
03:53Are you happy with the new girls to show off?
03:56Oh, yes.
03:56Do you want to wear cleavage?
03:57I love that.
03:58Yep.
03:58Okay, good.
03:59So we can go some lower tops?
04:01Absolutely.
04:01Perfect.
04:02Because they're going overseas.
04:03Yeah, now tell me about Vash.
04:05Yes.
04:05The whole family are going.
04:07We've just sold our business.
04:08Congratulations.
04:09So, first family holiday in I don't even remember how long.
04:13So we kind of need a bit of a capsule that you can take all the bits and pieces that you
04:17need so that when you're travelling it's absolutely foolproof and you can just use the pieces
04:21time and time again.
04:22When you're going out, what kind of things do you gravitate towards?
04:25I love dresses.
04:26Yes.
04:27I used to cover as much as possible.
04:29Never anything sort of fitted or with a belt.
04:32So it's all very under the...
04:34Loose.
04:35I can see.
04:37And really wanting the makeover so that I can show my children that it's good to love
04:41yourself and not try and cover up as I did for so many years.
04:46And then pants.
04:48Just jeans.
04:49Yes.
04:50Just jeans and trackies.
04:52I'm starting to get used to wearing pants.
04:54It always used to be just dresses.
04:56Okay.
04:57I'd like to sort of mix things up a little bit.
05:00Yeah.
05:00And then as far as shoes goes, sandals, sneakers.
05:03Yes.
05:04And I do love wearing heels.
05:06Oh, do you?
05:07Okay, good.
05:07I do.
05:08Because what we want is for you to feel really confident and just love your new look and feel
05:12so that when you walk out that door everyone goes, who is that gorgeous woman?
05:16Wonderful.
05:16We've got some fun ahead of us.
05:17Yes.
05:18It's going to be really exciting.
05:22Are you ready to go shopping?
05:24So ready.
05:24Let's go.
05:25Time to stop smiling.
05:26Yay!
05:27This is the beautiful Donna.
05:28Hi Donna.
05:29Nice to meet you.
05:30Hi, Kira.
05:30I love that she's in Blue Illusion.
05:32Kira's traveling.
05:33She needs a travel capsule.
05:34Yes, she definitely does.
05:35So we should talk about all the things that you might need.
05:37Well, you haven't really got anything, have you?
05:39So we need to start from scratch.
05:41Okay, so I think we should try everything.
05:43I think so too.
05:44Just have fun.
05:45We'll pull out things, play and see what they look like.
05:47And you either like them or you won't like them.
05:50I'm really loving these for you.
05:52I think this is such a great color as a base.
05:54And then tying it back into the shirt like this.
05:56I do love the design.
05:57Isn't it gorgeous?
05:58Yeah, that's so pretty.
05:59A little bag like this then to tie it all in together.
06:04Oh, wow!
06:05I've never worn this color before.
06:07Haven't you?
06:08No.
06:08It's so you.
06:09I love the earrings too.
06:13Something may be a bit fitted because she's got this little body.
06:16That's exactly right.
06:17Oh!
06:18And I just thought some denim would be fantastic.
06:20Look at you with a waist.
06:22I know.
06:23I never would have worn something so tight fitting before.
06:26I'm loving this bag too for just a pop of color.
06:29And I think for travel, a scarf can either be tied on or you can tie it around your neck.
06:34You're a new woman.
06:34Yeah.
06:35How good does she look at everything?
06:37Amazing.
06:37I know.
06:38She is like a little doll.
06:39Yeah.
06:40And we can just dress her in everything.
06:41It's so exciting.
06:42Oh, that material is gorgeous too.
06:52And isn't the color is gorgeous?
06:53Yeah.
06:53You can play around a lot with that.
06:55Use this more of a layering piece as opposed to it just being a cardigan.
06:58And then pop a denim jacket over your shoulders.
07:01And that just changes it up again too.
07:03Doesn't she look beautiful in those pinks and reds?
07:05She just glows.
07:07Stunning.
07:08You look beautiful.
07:09I'm just going to cry.
07:10You know what?
07:12It's so exciting.
07:13You look amazing.
07:14Aren't they happy to you?
07:15They are so happy.
07:17Beautiful girl.
07:19It's weird to actually focus on myself.
07:22I need to do it more.
07:23I haven't had my hair straightened for probably 20 years.
07:28Oh my gosh, it's exciting.
07:30I've known Kira for 30 years now.
07:32Oh wow.
07:33Yeah, I love her to death.
07:34I was her old dance teacher.
07:36Before she had her accident.
07:37And it stopped her from dancing.
07:39She sort of lost her confidence and didn't want to be putting herself forward anymore.
07:43That's right.
07:44She's been challenged a lot over the years.
07:46So I feel like she's going to be centre stage now, right where she should be.
07:49I'm looking forward to it.
07:50I know, I can't wait for you to see her.
07:52This is all about getting out of your comfort zone.
07:56I'd really like to love myself a little bit more and have this confidence for my children
08:01so that they're happy, confident people.
08:04She's such a little sparkle.
08:05Yeah.
08:05I just adore her.
08:07Such an amazing experience.
08:09I'm so lucky.
08:11Are you nearly ready, Kira?
08:12Yes.
08:13Time for your grand entrance.
08:15We're excited.
08:17Oh my gosh.
08:19Look at this.
08:20Oh my gosh.
08:21You look magnificent.
08:24Oh, that's gorgeous.
08:25Little twirl.
08:26You just look so gorgeous.
08:29Yeah.
08:29Look at you, your hair.
08:32Your family never die when they see you.
08:33Oh, I know.
08:34I love it.
08:35And the colours.
08:36You just look amazing.
08:37A million dollars.
08:38Oh, thank you.
08:39What a great travelling outfit.
08:41Oh my gosh.
08:41It's gorgeous.
08:42It's so beautiful.
08:43Look at that smiley face.
08:44I feel so confident in this.
08:46Do you?
08:47Yeah, I really do.
08:48I really love it.
08:49I feel like I can walk down the catwalk.
08:50And you can.
08:51Well done.
08:52So nice.
08:53Yay.
08:53What a joyful morning it's been.
09:01Oh, it's so pretty.
09:04Shabbos.
09:05Yay.
09:06Cheers.
09:06Cheers.
09:07Yay.
09:08Thank you so much.
09:09Such an absolute pleasure.
09:11It was so lovely to have met you.
09:12Enjoy your trip.
09:13Enjoy everything you've got ahead of you.
09:15I'm so prepared now.
09:16You are.
09:17Bye bye.
09:17Bye.
09:19Coming up, chef extraordinaire Gary Megan
09:23reaches into the fridge on a waste not, want not mission.
09:28Don't miss it.
09:28See you soon.
09:36Welcome back to Healthy, Wealthy and Wise
09:38and welcome to our new kitchen playground.
09:41Back of the fridge, fine dining.
09:43This is where we put those sad, neglected bits and bobs
09:47from your fridge and pantry.
09:49Rather than tossing all that stuff, we're turning them into something you'll actually want to
09:54eat and helping us prove that tonight is one of Australia's most beloved chefs.
09:59Couldn't get him, but we've got his guy.
10:01I was going to say, thanks for the nice intro.
10:02You sure you've got the right guy?
10:04Can't wait to see what magic you can weave here.
10:06No better time to talk about how to use up leftovers because food waste is out of control.
10:11I know it myself and I struggle as a chef trying to use stuff.
10:14Yes.
10:14So this is a great leftover dish.
10:16Think bubble and squeak.
10:17This is a Japanese version.
10:18It's called okonomiyaki.
10:20As you like it, which is the okonomiyaki, and yaki, which means grilled.
10:23These were leftover leeks.
10:24I made risotto during the week.
10:26Everybody's got a couple of slices of bacon that you do the sniff test, should be fine.
10:30And then what are you going to do with a handful of spinach?
10:32Well, we'll cook this down and it'll fit on a teaspoon.
10:34Great.
10:35So the heart of okonomiyaki is batter, self-raising flour, eggs.
10:40You can use water, or if you want, you can buy dashi powder.
10:44It's like a stock powder.
10:45It's got plenty of umami.
10:47Little fish here.
10:47Oh, God.
10:49It smells like you've got it out of a fish tank.
10:51You've gone like that.
10:52It does.
10:53But you know when you go for Japanese food and you go,
10:55what's that little note in the background?
10:57What's that?
10:57Right.
10:58Do me a favor.
10:59Little grater.
11:00Zucchini.
11:01I'm just keeping it busy.
11:02What do they say about idle hands, Gary?
11:05I don't know.
11:05The devil's work.
11:06Put them in your pockets.
11:07I'm going to put enough liquid to make a smooth batter.
11:11Pass me that little bottle with the cabbage and things in.
11:14Just put anything in it.
11:16Zucchini.
11:17I've got some spring onion.
11:19Bacon.
11:20No, I was joking.
11:25We've got our batter.
11:27Do you know what this part of the grater is for?
11:29Your feet.
11:31You go like that.
11:32Oh, it's not working.
11:35Look, look, look at that.
11:37Show me.
11:38That is a ridiculous waste of paper.
11:41You know you can do this, grate it like that.
11:43You just tap it.
11:44I'm going to put that in there and it might cut the fish tank water.
11:47This is pickled ginger.
11:49You can put more or less batter, depending on how vegetable heavy or how pancake heavy.
11:54If there's an option for more, then why wouldn't you?
11:57I indeed love an induction cooktop and I'm a converted induction person.
12:03Yes, I know.
12:04Keep the sponsors happy.
12:05I get it.
12:05I get it.
12:05You've got to pay the bill.
12:06So in it goes, like a little pancake.
12:09And you make it a crispy bottom, don't you?
12:11You want a crispy bottom before you flip it.
12:14Oh, God.
12:15Here's one we prepared earlier.
12:16Here's one I prepared earlier.
12:17This is so long.
12:19About three minutes and you talk so much.
12:21I know, so do you.
12:22It's hard.
12:23Look at that.
12:24Did you see that?
12:25Did you catch it?
12:26So essentially, that's what it is.
12:28So it takes about two to three minutes each side.
12:31Yeah.
12:31Golden brown before you flip it over.
12:33It's stuck.
12:35A prawn in there would be amazing.
12:37Yeah.
12:38That's a prawn.
12:38Yeah.
12:39Because that was the one I made earlier and I had a little leftover prawn.
12:43Who doesn't?
12:45Me?
12:46Try and just for a moment.
12:47Have a little zen where you do this.
12:49Oh, my God.
12:50Do that with the cupid.
12:51Okay.
12:52Okay.
12:53Settle down.
12:53Breathe.
12:56Oh.
12:56Yeah, I'm sorry.
12:57Did I?
13:00I really like the cupid.
13:01Oh, my God.
13:03You know the okanomi, just the way I like it?
13:06That's how I like it.
13:07That's how you like it.
13:07Right.
13:08Can we eat it with our fast food?
13:08So hang on.
13:09I'm going to put a little bit of this on.
13:10Yeah, I love that.
13:11I love that.
13:12And I'm going to put a little bit of this on half of it because I like it.
13:15Do you know what?
13:15You've got to be careful, though.
13:16There's two varieties of this at the supermarket, and one of them is fish food.
13:21And I bought it by mistake.
13:23No, but there's a giveaway.
13:24It has writing on the side that says fish food.
13:28All right?
13:29All right.
13:30A few spring onions.
13:34You have that bit.
13:35Oh, my God.
13:37It's so good.
13:37And I'll have this bit.
13:39And essentially what you're going to get is a nice, savoury vegetable pancake with all
13:43that kind of lovely gooey business on top.
13:46You, just wait.
13:48Just wait.
13:49Let me.
13:50And just so you know, this is called an okonomiyaki dance.
13:56Don't you feel it?
13:59No.
13:59I feel something.
14:02Pack your bags, you're going to heaven.
14:04That is the most delicious thing I've eaten in a very long time.
14:06I'm going to cut this up for this hungry crew, but do not go anywhere, and that includes
14:10you too, Gary.
14:11You and I are going to be having a very nice, relaxed chat on the couch after this.
14:17Nice chat.
14:18Nothing going on.
14:19Totally safe.
14:21Don't be afraid.
14:22See you soon.
14:24Let me have some.
14:24Welcome back to the show.
14:37Well, Gary proved that there is life in those old veggies yet.
14:42I'm going to get that written on my gravestone.
14:45Ash, were you taking notes?
14:46Vigorously, I've got here, call Gary.
14:50Always call Gary.
14:52But Gary doesn't know I have his phone number, so.
14:55I love it.
14:56Now, when it comes to money, we've actually got you covered right here.
14:59Rachel, you are kicking off a new segment for us today.
15:02It's all about money, which is great, because I'm terrible with money.
15:06That's exactly it.
15:07So, on Fast Money, we're going to take the boring, dry financial stuff and make it interesting
15:12and practical.
15:13We're going to give you tips and tricks to make sure that the money you do have is working
15:17as hard for you as it possibly can.
15:19And I promise you, you are not going to fall asleep while I do this.
15:23All right.
15:23I'm ready to learn.
15:24Let's go.
15:25Okay, let's go.
15:30Now, if money's feeling tight right now, you are not alone.
15:33Cost of living and interest rates are sky high.
15:35So here are a few quick and easy ways you can free up cash flow without dropping what
15:39you're spending at all.
15:40Let's go.
15:40First of all, we want to review your subscriptions.
15:43You know the ones.
15:44Streaming services, apps, VPNs.
15:47Are we really using them all?
15:49There's two places I need you to check.
15:50We're going to go into your banking app and look for your regular transactions.
15:53And secondly, we're going to go into the settings on your phone and search subscriptions,
15:57because often they're hiding in there.
15:59Now, we want to hold on to the ones that we love and use all the time.
16:02And we want to get rid of the ones that we don't.
16:04Secondly, we're going to renegotiate your bills, starting with the big costs first.
16:08The utilities and the insurances.
16:10Electricity, gas, home, car and health insurances.
16:13Now, these bills are responsible for about 10% of the household budget.
16:17And studies suggest a basic comparison website can save you about 30% on those costs, which
16:22really adds up over the year.
16:24Now, thirdly, if you're an Australian with a mortgage, don't be afraid to pick up the
16:27phone and call your bank and ask for an interest rate reduction.
16:30Even a 0.2 or a 0.3% drop can make thousands of dollars of difference over the year.
16:36Finally, we want to think about automating your savings, treating it like a bill and set
16:41up that automatic transfer into a secondary bank account.
16:44Ideally, something you don't have access to with a card or that you can tap and go.
16:48$50, $100 a week is a great start.
16:50But ideally, we'd love to aim for 10 or 15% of your income to be saved over time.
16:55Remember, it's not about cutting joy.
16:57It's about cutting waste.
16:59And that money you free up, that's your power and choice.
17:01It's up to you.
17:02Is it a holiday to Mykonos or is it an extra buffer in your budget?
17:06Big thanks to Rachel for breaking that down for us.
17:10Who knew that money tips didn't have to come with a migraine?
17:14But now everyone's favourite part of the show, as long as they're not sitting right there.
17:21Yep, we've had Gary Meaghan waiting in the wings.
17:24And in just a moment, he'll be joining me right here on the couch for what should be a perfectly
17:29lovely and innocent conversation, except for one small detail.
17:34Please welcome our next victim, Gary Meaghan, to the Box of Death.
17:40You're welcome, Gary.
17:46Thank you so much.
17:47You and I have been on plenty of TV sets together.
17:49It's always been a joy.
17:50But I think this one might be the first where I'm trying to kill you.
17:55I know.
17:56I'm trying to make you squirm, at least.
17:57It's hard to ignore.
17:58I know.
17:58I'm trying to ignore.
17:59I know.
18:00There's no kitchen.
18:02There's no judging panel.
18:03There is just a choice between three of Australia's least nice creatures.
18:12I'm talking about a massive muscle-packed snake that's behind you.
18:18Also, a creepy-crawly spider currently living in a terrarium.
18:24Okay, lovely.
18:24And hopefully it stays there.
18:25It stays in there, yeah.
18:26Or the third option is whatever is in the Box of Death.
18:32The good thing for me about this is you never know you're truly terrified of something until
18:36you come face-to-face with it.
18:37That is very true.
18:39You've said that about me.
18:40But you turned out okay.
18:43It's a good news story.
18:44All right.
18:45Don't decide yet.
18:46Okay?
18:47Check out your options.
18:48We're going to give you some time.
18:49Yeah.
18:49And we will be right back after the break to find out if Gary Megan has the balls to go
18:58with the Box of Death.
18:59I thought you were going to say a 90-pound weakling.
19:03Forget the 90 pounds.
19:05We'll see you soon.
19:14Welcome back.
19:15We are joined by my old pal, Gary Megan.
19:18In old, meaning we've known each other for a long time.
19:20Of course, of course.
19:21Water under the bridge.
19:23Although, we have been very good friends.
19:25I think you're about to dump me.
19:27Because?
19:28Yes, because you're here to have a chat with me and you've got to choose between holding
19:33a snake, a revolting spider, and whatever's in the Box of Death.
19:41Just to make you more confident in your choice, we have a priest on set for you.
19:48In case things go terribly bad and you need your last rites, haven't we?
19:53Spectacles, testicles, watch.
19:55You good to go, Gary?
19:56It's all good.
19:58What's your choice?
19:59I'm going to...
20:00Oh my God.
20:02What?
20:02I'm going to go the Box of Death, but I just saw something stick its nose out of the air.
20:07Could I change my mind?
20:09No, you can't.
20:10It's locked in.
20:11I'm taking defensive stance.
20:13Gary, Megan, you have chosen the Box of Death.
20:15Box of Death.
20:17We're going to need some professional help here.
20:19Ebony, enter.
20:21All right, what is this?
20:21I'm so excited.
20:24What is it?
20:25Oh!
20:27What is it?
20:28It's a rat.
20:29No, isn't it a quokka?
20:30No, this is beautiful Barbara.
20:32And what's Barbara?
20:33Barbara is what we call a brush-tail bettor.
20:35Oh my God, how best to hold.
20:37Looks like lunch.
20:40Cover your ears, Barbara.
20:42We're saying mean things.
20:43Yeah.
20:43All right, Barbara is actually very cute.
20:45She's very cute.
20:46You've won already.
20:47I've done well.
20:47Ready?
20:48You relaxed?
20:48I am.
20:49Start the clock.
20:51You have filmed with National Geographic India.
20:53What meal's spice level made it uncomfortable to sit down the next day?
20:56Ooh, Naga chilies.
20:58They have a Naga chili eating competition up in Nagaland, which is up the north, and they are
21:02the hottest chili on the planet.
21:03You can't even eat, like, a little tip of it.
21:07Did you have ring sting?
21:08I had a lot of sting all the way through.
21:11Riding around rural Australia on a motorbike makes your heart sing, Gary Megan.
21:16What about your thighs?
21:17Talk to us about the chafe.
21:22I'm good with chafe.
21:23I think, can we say arse on TV?
21:26Yes, of course.
21:27You've never heard of chef's arse?
21:29No.
21:29Worse than thigh chafe.
21:31What's chef's arse?
21:32It's a hot, anybody that's got a hot, sweaty job, including builders, with a crack, has
21:38to...
21:39You get chafe in there.
21:41Yeah.
21:41You can cut this if you want, but there was an old chef that was about 17 years old.
21:45I never knew what chef's arse was.
21:46And his name was Emil, and he pulled out almost a whole ream of toilet paper that he used to
21:54jam into his underpants to prevent the aforementioned chef.
21:57He's a chef, and his name was Emil.
22:00Oh, my God.
22:02For real?
22:04Emil.
22:04It was meant to be.
22:06It was meant to be.
22:07Anyway, next time you see a chef wandering out of the kitchen, walking strangely, it's not chafed thighs.
22:14It's chafed cheeks.
22:16She can't believe the filth on the show.
22:18She's ready to go.
22:18She's out.
22:19What is your dish of shame?
22:21You're at home, you're in your audience.
22:22What are you making?
22:24There's a few awkward things, but I like really cheap burger cheese, you know, that isn't actually
22:30cheese.
22:30Oh, my God.
22:31Burger cheese is the...
22:31They're like plastic sheets.
22:32Yes, it is the secret.
22:34Yes.
22:34And do you know what I do?
22:35I take them out of the little plastic wrapper, obviously not worried about microplastics,
22:38and I spread Vegemite on them.
22:41And if there's a bit of bread handy, now you know why I have the body shape I do.
22:45I didn't know you were a bogan, Gary.
22:48You know what?
22:49There are some things that are okay.
22:50And actually, if it's cheap white bread, like really...
22:53Yes.
22:53Oh, goodness me.
22:55You have worked in top kitchens and on top rating shows.
23:00Who are the bigger divas?
23:01Restaurant diners or TV types?
23:03Restaurant diners.
23:04Oh, in equal measure.
23:06Some of the very worst of, yeah, all of the above.
23:09What is an example of just an insufferable...
23:11TV divas.
23:12...sufferable, no, an insufferable customer?
23:15Um...
23:16Like the ones that you've wanted to spit in their food.
23:19Never, never.
23:20Always wanted to do the whoosh, which was a Marco thing.
23:23You know, they used to come in, rip the tablecloth off, remove everything from the table in 10 seconds
23:28and say, your evening is over.
23:30I always wanted to do it.
23:31I had customers I really wanted to do it and I never, never, never did it.
23:35I'm going to do that the next time my daughter can play the back.
23:36I think the worst customers are the ones that treat you and your staff like you're nothing.
23:42Gary Vegan, well done.
23:43You've been triumphant in the box of death.
23:46Oh, it's a box of cuddles, really.
23:48She's lovely.
23:50A box of cuddles.
23:52I feel like you need just a little bit more time, a few more moments with Barbara.
23:57We're going to leave you there and we'll be back after this.
23:59You all right, Babs?
24:00Yeah.
24:03Hey, everyone.
24:04I'm at the Dandenong Markets and I'm here to learn more about the Vinnie Soup Vans and what they serve up for the community.
24:09And hopefully share a couple of recipes with them.
24:12Tola, my friend.
24:13How are you doing?
24:14Hey, good.
24:15How are you?
24:15Good to see you.
24:16Good to see you.
24:17Hey, I wanted to ask you, why is this market so crucial to Vinnie's?
24:21So we couldn't do what we do without the support of the market.
24:25Like, we'll collect a whole lot of fresh fruit and veg.
24:27Fill up this van and then we're going to give it out on the street tonight.
24:31It will all go.
24:32All right, let's get inside.
24:33Let's have a look.
24:33Let's go.
24:34Okay, Vincent, I might get you to put one of these on so everybody knows that you're with us.
24:42Oh, I'm part of the team now.
24:44Part of the team.
24:48I mean, look at these oranges.
24:50They're perfect.
24:53So why are they getting rid of all these, like, fresh produce?
24:56So the market will be closed tomorrow.
24:59I see.
25:00So they need to move this stuff on and everyone wins.
25:04We've got potatoes and leek.
25:06I know exactly what to do.
25:14We just got back from the market.
25:15So I've got my produce and we're going to go meet my sous chef to talk about Vinnie's Soup Bands.
25:24Simone, how are you?
25:25Pleased to meet you.
25:26Likewise.
25:27Thank you for coming out here today.
25:28Tell me about this place.
25:29This place is amazing.
25:30Well, this is where the heart and soul of Vinnie's starts.
25:32So it's where we get our produce.
25:34It's where we do our cooking.
25:36It's where we pack our pantry items.
25:38This is where it all happens.
25:40Well, I can't wait to get into the kitchen.
25:42I've got a couple of ingredients here.
25:43We've got potatoes and we've got leeks.
25:45How's that sound?
25:46Sounds fantastic.
25:46Well, it's got my name on it.
25:52So, Simone, tell me your story.
25:55So I'm a volunteer here with Vinnie's.
25:57I have been for the last three years.
26:00And I can't get the glove on.
26:03And I'm also a leader with Vinnie's, which means I organise the roster for our inner city morning rough sleeper service.
26:13So that's what I do.
26:14So I'm cutting the leek right now.
26:15I'll get you to peel the potatoes if that's okay.
26:18With onions and garlic, I'm just going to brown them in the pot.
26:22So, yeah, I hate peeling garlic.
26:28Right now I'm just chopping up the garlic and throw that into the pot.
26:32We're just cutting the onions.
26:34We've just thrown the onions into the pot.
26:36We're going to throw the leeks in there.
26:38Lovely.
26:38I've heard potato and leek soup is your favourite.
26:41Absolutely.
26:44I'm sure this will change my mind.
26:47How many people do you guys serve in a year?
26:49So across Victoria, last year, we served 220,000 people.
26:56220,000 people.
26:58I know. It's amazing.
26:59That is insane.
27:01I'm going to show you a very lazy trick.
27:03I don't like boiling the potatoes.
27:05So I've got this trick is just really thinly slice it.
27:09So then it can cook really fast.
27:12This is almost ready.
27:13Yep.
27:14So we're going to top it up with chicken stock.
27:17So how long do you cook this for?
27:20Not too long until it's all softened.
27:21Until the potato is softened, which is pretty quick because it's so thin.
27:24Okay.
27:25Just going to add the cream.
27:26And look, like this soup, you don't have to measure anything.
27:29You can just eyeball it.
27:31Let's hope you like it.
27:32Going to add a little bit of yum yum.
27:35Okay.
27:35Shall we try it?
27:36Here you go.
27:40Good or no good?
27:41It's delicious.
27:42Is it?
27:42Really?
27:42It's delicious.
27:43Yep.
27:44Really?
27:45Okay.
27:46Well, I hope the community is just as happy with it.
27:47I'm sure they will be.
27:48Let's bottle it up and let's bring it out.
27:50Yeah?
27:51Okay.
27:59It has been a long, long day today.
28:02Now we're at the plaza.
28:03It is freezing cold here tonight and we're about to feed everyone with the Vinny's van.
28:10Hi, I'm Erin.
28:11Nice to meet you.
28:12I'm Vincent.
28:12Lovely to meet you too.
28:13We were about an hour early and we realized that there was people already lining up all
28:18the way down.
28:19Yeah.
28:19They're waiting here all day sometimes.
28:21So we get people lining up from about 9am.
28:23Every Tuesday we're here, so we get anywhere from 80 to about 120 people.
28:30Some of the soup vans even run on Christmas Day and help the companions on those days, you
28:34know, when they can need it most.
28:38Is there anything I can do to help?
28:40Of course.
28:40You're more than welcome to join the line.
28:42We're more than merrier.
28:43We're always up for more volunteers.
28:44Hey, this was a soup you made earlier.
28:49Yes.
28:50Enjoy.
28:51Oh, wow.
28:53It's still nice and hot.
28:55Would you like a soup?
28:58Here you go.
28:59No problem.
29:00Enjoy.
29:01I don't think I made enough.
29:03Oh, I've got more.
29:03We've got more.
29:04Okay, good, good, good.
29:07It's nice?
29:08Yay.
29:08Oh, thank you.
29:09Would you like a little bit more?
29:11Yay.
29:11Today has been a really eye-opening day.
29:17Being a chef for so long, you kind of forget that food is a necessity, you know?
29:22We cook in the kitchen, we make all this fancy stuff, and we waste a lot.
29:26And to see food fed to all the public, it's a great feeling.
29:30And it's been a pleasure to tag along with these guys and be able to help out.
29:34Big, big thank you to everyone here that helps out every single week.
29:41From Vincent ladling soup to Dr. Michael ladling out the truth, you never know where this show
29:49is going to take you.
29:50After the break, Dr. Michael is busting some eye health myths you've probably scrolled past
29:55on your feed.
29:56Stick around.
29:57Healthy, wealthy and wise is brought to you by Specsavers.
30:13Welcome back.
30:15Now, Ash, we've all seen those wild health hacks and miracle cures that clog up our socials
30:22and make us feel bad.
30:24Raw food diets, charcoal detoxes, crystals full of lunar energy.
30:30But how do you actually tell what is helpful and what is just social media nonsense?
30:36Most of it's nonsense, if I'm honest.
30:38You can't trust verified accounts either now.
30:41I have trust issues.
30:43But you'll be happy to know I, me, believe it or not, has taken some initiative.
30:47You've done something.
30:48I've done something.
30:49I've got Dr. Michael on the line, ready to cut the crap.
30:52Guys, this is amazing.
30:54Dr. Michael is zooming in straight from his honeymoon.
30:58And we're about to ruin it with some social media health trends.
31:02Dr. Mike, you are a good sport.
31:05What is that?
31:07Hey, Chrissie.
31:08Oh, hey, guys.
31:11Hey, Chrissie.
31:12How are you?
31:12Yeah, look, you're joining me from my honeymoon.
31:15My wife's probably going to kill me.
31:16She's given me 10 minutes to talk to you in between our lunch and the Pilates class.
31:20Dr. Michael, on your honeymoon, you're supposed to be doing kissing with that mouth.
31:24What's with the tape?
31:26So, look, people are putting tape over their mouth at night time because of all the benefits
31:29that it apparently has.
31:30We know that breathing through your nose is better for you.
31:33But should you be taping your mouth at night to force your body to breathe through your nose?
31:37Probably not.
31:38And for a few reasons, some people just can't breathe through their nose because they've got
31:42a deviated septum, sinus or congestion issues.
31:45Or they might have sleep apnea.
31:47So if somebody with those conditions does it, they might actually feel much worse.
31:51And sometimes it can be dangerous because they might not be able to breathe at all.
31:55Well, then they would die.
31:56So that's not really the desired outcome.
32:00Any other health tips that are at the top of the pile?
32:03One of the other things that I've seen all over social media, and you guys and everybody
32:07at home has probably seen it as well, is lemon water in the morning to detox your system.
32:13Look, lemons do have some health benefits.
32:16They've got lots of vitamin C, but you're going to get vitamin C in your diet if your
32:21diet's nice and healthy anyway.
32:23So a glass of lemon water in the morning is not going to help you detox your kidneys and
32:28your liver do a good enough job as it is.
32:31All right.
32:31What else have you got that can save us from ourselves?
32:34There are so many trends out there, Chrissy, that I just do not have the time to go through
32:38every single one of them.
32:39The ones that have been worrying me the most recently are all about eye health, because
32:44they can leave some permanent damage.
32:47Now, I'm no optometrist.
32:48So before I left for my honeymoon, I went to see Joe, who is...
32:56Hey, nice to meet you.
32:57How you doing?
32:59Joe, I need to pick your brains.
33:01I have been seeing so many wild trends all over social media with all these eye crazes,
33:06and I have to run it past you and see what you think.
33:08The first one that I saw is putting raw honey in your eyes to lighten the colour.
33:15There's really no evidence behind honey lightening your eye colour.
33:20It's not sterile.
33:21It can introduce serious eye infections.
33:23Look, in my opinion, honey belongs on your toast, not in your eyes.
33:27I agree.
33:28Another thing that I'm seeing, Joe, is people are putting bees and lip moisturiser around
33:32their eye in order to give them some kind of glow.
33:34Is that a good idea?
33:35Oh, gosh, no.
33:37The skin around your eyelid is incredibly delicate, and putting menthol and camphor on
33:41there can really irritate the eyelids.
33:44Now, I can't believe I'm actually going to ask you this question, because most sensible
33:48people already know the answer.
33:50But putting bleach directly into your eyes to lighten them, what would you say to that,
33:56Joe?
33:56OK, so even small amounts of those chemicals can cause chemical burns.
34:02It's incredibly dangerous.
34:04I think if your eyes are looking red or irritated, just see your optometrist for an eye examination.
34:10There are proven treatments.
34:12Bleach is definitely not one of them.
34:14Again, Joe, this was a huge trend.
34:17It's called sun gazing, and it's when you put your balls in the sun, your eyeballs, staring
34:24at the sun for eye health.
34:26That is incredibly dangerous.
34:28It can lead to something called solar retinopathy, which is basically you've burnt a hole in your
34:33retina.
34:34So just like how you wouldn't stare at a welding torch, do not stare at the sun.
34:39It can cause permanent damage.
34:41OK, another popular myth is that you can blow dry your eyelashes.
34:46You can dry out the tear film.
34:48You can burn the skin around the eyelids.
34:50You can even melt makeup into the eyes.
34:53Like, I think it's just a recipe for disaster.
34:55Just don't do it.
34:56Sounds painful.
34:57People out there think that there has to be a problem with your eyes before you get them
35:01checked.
35:02That is the biggest myth.
35:03And there are a lot of conditions like glaucoma or macular degeneration, where in the early
35:09stages, you don't notice any symptoms at all.
35:11And by the time you notice it, then it's often too late.
35:15So it's a really good idea to get your eyes checked regularly.
35:18And in saying that, I think it's time for me to get mine checked.
35:23So Chrissie, when it comes to your health, there are no shortcuts, unfortunately.
35:27We're all the same.
35:28We watch social media.
35:29We like a quick fix or the idea of a quick fix.
35:32But in reality, with our bodies, it just doesn't work like that.
35:35That was very informative.
35:36Thank you so much, Dr. Michael.
35:38No, you're absolutely welcome, Chrissie and Ash.
35:40I love chatting to you this morning.
35:42And it's time for me to go and do my first Pilates class, which I'm absolutely terrified
35:47of.
35:47It could be really painful.
35:48So thanks for talking.
35:50See you later.
35:50Thank you so much for joining us tonight, Dr. Michael.
35:53Your dedication is impressive.
35:55Now get back to it.
35:56Okay, I think that is enough eye-watering myths for one day.
36:00Coming up.
36:01My latest online obsession, drain cleaning videos.
36:05We'll meet the man responsible for some of my favourites.
36:08Go to the bathroom, put on the kettle.
36:10I'll be here when you get back.
36:11Welcome back to Healthy, Wealthy and Wise.
36:20After jumping around rural Victoria and the dark streets of Melbourne, I think it's time
36:26we all settle in.
36:27Now, Ash, what do you do?
36:30Please keep in mind we are on air in people's living rooms.
36:34What do you do when you get a moment of life?
36:36Do you want me to be honest?
36:37Yes.
36:37I'm a chronic doom scroller.
36:39Are you?
36:40I just love locking in, getting angry at my phone for no reason.
36:44Yeah.
36:45Slippery slope.
36:45I know what you mean.
36:46You're not alone.
36:46It's like when you tell yourself you're just going to watch one video and then all of a
36:49sudden it's tomorrow.
36:50Oh, I love that.
36:52Yeah.
36:52The best ones are the little ones that deliver, like the lawn mowing ones or the cleaning,
36:59like power washing.
37:01Oh, yeah.
37:01Okay, confession time.
37:03Do you want to know my personal kryptonite?
37:05Yeah, go on.
37:05Videos of drains being cleared.
37:09Oof.
37:09Not the fully gross ones, but just that moment that the blockage comes free.
37:16Magic.
37:17Like a kind of magic.
37:19There's something about it.
37:20Well, I couldn't stop thinking about these videos.
37:22Couldn't stop searching for them.
37:24I did task you with the job of finding someone who clears these drains for a living.
37:31How did you go?
37:32You're in luck.
37:33Yes.
37:33I have found the king of clean pipes.
37:36His name's Brendan Dover, boss of The Drain Man.
37:39The Drain Man?
37:40Yes.
37:41And he hears a tall drink of water.
37:42As I live and breathe.
37:45Hang on a minute.
37:47Stand up again.
37:48We've got to, we've, we've, look.
37:52Not guilty, Your Honour.
37:55You feel so little.
37:57You are.
37:57You are guilty.
37:58Oh, my God.
37:59This is so nice.
38:01It's almost a perfect fit, isn't it?
38:02Do you want to have a go?
38:03It's nice.
38:04No, no, no, no, no.
38:05Come on, come on.
38:05Three's a crowd.
38:06Come on.
38:07Come on.
38:08It's so nice.
38:10Oh, look.
38:10Look underneath.
38:11Oh, look.
38:12Oh, he is.
38:15Oh.
38:15He's so snuggly.
38:17Oh, that's brilliant.
38:19That is so nice.
38:20That's better.
38:21Sit down.
38:21That's better.
38:21He's gone.
38:22What size are they?
38:24Oh, they can be whatever size you want them to be.
38:26I think they're about a 17.
38:28A 17.
38:29You know what big feet mean, Chrissie?
38:31What?
38:32Big hands, I say.
38:33Yes.
38:34Yes.
38:34Yeah.
38:35Well, thank you so much for coming.
38:37Thanks for having me.
38:37Did you know what you do for a living really scratches the itch of a lot of people?
38:43Well, it scratches my itch, so I suppose it scratches other people's.
38:47What is the weirdest thing that you've ever...
38:50You don't want to know.
38:51Yeah, I do.
38:52No, you don't.
38:52Oh, trust me, I do.
38:54Have you ever found a Christmas pudding or an echidna?
38:57I've found other things.
38:58Like what?
38:59Dead possums.
39:00Wombats.
39:01That's more like it.
39:02Snakes.
39:03A wombat.
39:04Frogs.
39:06Look at him.
39:08Yeah.
39:10He's very cute.
39:11He took off pretty quick when the light from the camera shone in his eyes,
39:15because obviously they're nocturnal.
39:17What was the customer, when they called you, did they go...
39:21Oh, well, that was a goodwill gesture.
39:24Wildlife Victoria called us.
39:26It was in a culvert next to a highway, and they were worried.
39:30There were baby wombats in there as well,
39:32and so we got tasked with the job to try and help get it out.
39:35Have you ever found something that you've pocketed and sold later?
39:39No.
39:41No.
39:41Are you sure?
39:43Absolutely.
39:44I've found plenty of stuff, but after it's been coated in s***, it's...
39:51No, thanks.
39:53Come on, you can just wash it.
39:54Well, you can, but I'm not.
39:56You're not too good for washing, are you?
39:58No, I'm just saying I don't need someone else's used ring,
40:02no pun intended, to sell it.
40:07Do you watch the videos like I do, well into the night?
40:09I've cleared more drains than you've had hot dinners.
40:12I know, I've seen every single one.
40:15And so, yeah, it's...
40:18I don't watch other people doing it.
40:20I get a bit of a thrill out of when they're pulling long tails of tree root out of drains.
40:25You know, that can be 20, 30, 40 metres long.
40:28Yeah, it's like a snake.
40:29Yes.
40:30A never-ending snake.
40:31It's a root snake.
40:32Wouldn't it be weird if I was in my bed watching your videos
40:37and you were in your bed watching mine?
40:42I hadn't thought of that.
40:43It's like Freaky Saturday.
40:45Funny that, isn't it, how I hadn't thought of that?
40:47When should we call you and not do the DIY stuff?
40:53Probably when you've got a gurgle.
40:55So what does that sound like?
40:56What's the sound that we're waiting for?
40:57What's the gurgle?
40:58Well, we probably could get the audience to send in their impressions of a gurgle
41:03and that'd be interesting.
41:03Oh, you could do it now.
41:05Blop, blop, blop, blop, blop, blop, blop.
41:08So it's okay when it goes shh, but when it starts to go blop, blop, blop, blop.
41:13I haven't really ever heard a drone go shh.
41:17Haven't you?
41:17Well, maybe it's got an IT on the end.
41:20Maybe.
41:21No, not really.
41:23What can we do to avoid having to call you?
41:27Even though it's good for your business.
41:29Well, we don't want to go to jobs that we're not helping people.
41:33We don't need to practice because we do it all day, every day.
41:37So we give as much advice over the phone as we possibly can.
41:40Yes.
41:41We get a lot of calls for foul smells in houses.
41:46Yeah.
41:46And that's mostly because a...
41:48Teenage boys live there, I know.
41:49Yeah, yeah, they contribute to the problem.
41:52I mean, basically, teenage boys either smell like cheesy feet or watermelon vapes.
41:58Yeah.
41:58There's no mid-ground.
42:00And vapes are something that we're pulling out of school drains more and more often because...
42:06Mr Cuthbert's coming!
42:08Quick!
42:09Exactly.
42:11They don't want to get caught with it, so they flush it.
42:13So how many have you found in one school toilet?
42:16We pulled out about 14 out of one drain.
42:20Once one stops, they accumulate over time, and then the drain gets blocked, of course,
42:26with whatever behind it, paper or poo.
42:30And, yeah, schools have become a large part of our work with clearing drains...
42:36Yeah.
42:37...from things like vapes.
42:39Brendan, I cannot thank you enough for your time.
42:41It's been magic to have you here.
42:43Thank you, Chrissie.
42:44If it's okay with you, and I may be pushing the friendship.
42:47I know we're only new friends.
42:49Can you come back and talk about drains every single day of my life?
42:52Why not?
42:53Great!
42:53We're both going to enjoy the subject.
42:55I've got many, many more questions.
42:57And that is it for us.
42:59Thank you so much for joining us for another big one here on Healthy, Wealthy and Wise.
43:03I'm loving it.
43:04Are you?
43:04Next week, we'll be seeing what our brand-new friend, Brendan the Drain Man, gets up to
43:09on a real plumbing job.
43:11Nice little clump of hair that we've removed.
43:13I think we could make a wig out of this one.
43:15And we're back on the road with Adam Morris to find out what your eyes get up to when you're
43:21driving at night.
43:22Even though about 25% of driving happens at night, something like 40% of accidents happen
43:27after dark.
43:28Until then, relax, put on the kettle, do what you do.
43:32You've done enough for one day.
