03 October - National weather forecast presented by Alex Deakin.
Transcript
00:00Good morning. Storm Amy arrives today. Now, for a good part of the country, South Wales, Southern England, Eastern England, this storm isn't going to amount to very much.
00:09But where it does hit, it will hit really quite hard. And we do have an amber weather warning in place for northwest Scotland.
00:16It's been a pretty wet and windy night, actually, and so that first day of low pressure only slowly clearing away.
00:22So it's still pretty wet and windy over the northern isles and the southeast of England.
00:25And that does clear away, though, and most of us will have a brief respite. But here comes Storm Amy.
00:31The rain spreading into Northern Ireland this morning gets heavier through the afternoon and extends into western Scotland and northwest England, where we have Met Office yellow warnings in place.
00:40It's been quite a wet week, particularly in western Scotland. So this extra rain falling could cause some further disruption.
00:47Elsewhere, the rain will spread its way from west to east and the winds will steadily increase.
00:53So we get a brief lull this morning and then the winds pick up through the afternoon, particularly so in these western areas.
00:59The rain continues to extend its way further north as well.
01:02So not feeling all that pleasant as temperatures get into the mids to maybe high teens at best.
01:08Something a bit drier may arrive across Northern Ireland, but only as the winds really start to whip up here and in northwest Scotland, especially during this evening.
01:17An amber warning in place from five o'clock until nine o'clock on Saturday morning.
01:21A broader yellow wind warning in place as well.
01:24Gusts of 50, 60, 70 miles an hour, more so in that amber warning area, as we'll see shortly.
01:31There'll also be a spell of very strong winds that suddenly whip up as this band of rain crosses England and Wales through the night.
01:38So you may get woken up by the windows rattling as that moves through.
01:42It will be a relatively mild night across the south.
01:44Some clearer skies further north could allow those temperatures to dip down into single figures.
01:48But it really is the winds that are giving us the greatest cause for concern from this storm system.
01:54Storm Amy, there it is, tracking across Northern Scotland as we head into the weekend.
01:58But I thought we'd track it back and see what happened through the night.
02:02Because this storm system has been pushed along gently by the jet stream, that fast-moving ribbon of air.
02:07But it's pretty intense, the jet stream.
02:09And as the storm interacts, as Amy crosses the jet stream, well, that's when it really pops.
02:15It really intensifies.
02:17The jet really picking up and developing Amy into a powerful storm as we go through the next 24 hours or so.
02:25Look at the isobars on it, particularly packed close together on its southwestern quarter.
02:30It's in here where we're most concerned about the strength of the wind.
02:33But it's going to be very windy right across the UK.
02:35But we have this ambalt warning in place.
02:38Gust of wind here likely to be 60, 70 miles an hour quite widely.
02:42But potentially as much as 90 to 95 miles an hour in exposed areas.
02:47Now, we know this part of the country gets strong winds pretty frequently.
02:51But these are a notch above and likely to cause some significant disruption.
02:55That's why we've got an ambalt warning in place.
02:57Power cuts, travel disruption.
02:59So, just be ahead of the game if you can to get things prepared today before the storm system really packs in overnight.
03:07Tonight's broader yellow wind warning covering a good part of Wales, northern England, northern Ireland and all of Scotland,
03:13where gusts of wind of 50 to 60 miles an hour, 70 miles an hour and exposed areas in that yellow warning area are also likely to cause some disruption.
03:22So, as I say, this is really happening through this evening, overnight, tonight's, but even into Saturday morning.
03:28The amber warning's in place until 9 o'clock.
03:30The yellow warning in place for longer across northern Britain.
03:32It stays gusty throughout Saturday.
03:34Lots of showers packing in, even though the storm system is clearing away.
03:38Still bringing some persistent rain and very strong winds across the northern Isles.
03:42Further south, some dry and bright conditions.
03:44A bright and breezy day, if you like.
03:45As I said, not too many issues expected here at this stage.
03:49It really is the northern half of the UK expected to bear the brunt from this storm system.
03:54But everywhere will be feeling cooler by the time we get to Saturday afternoon.
03:58Temperatures dropping off, exacerbated by the strength of the wind, which will continue to ease down a little bit as we head into Sunday.
04:06Now, for more on that, you want to watch the full weekend video.
04:09That is available on our YouTube channel.
