00:00Police Commissioner Alistair Guevara has confirmed that 72 persons are currently detained under Preventative Detention Orders, PDOs, issued during the ongoing state of emergency.
00:13Speaking on Monday morning on I-95.5 FM, Guevara said a total of 116 PDOs had been approved. Of that number, 72 were executed, leaving 44 still pending.
00:27He added that three individuals remained in custody awaiting approval of their orders, while two others were in custody pending execution.
00:37Nine detainees have thus far challenged their detention before the SOE tribunal, the Commissioner said.
00:43Guevara explained that his officers were hard at work to ensure individuals do not simply walk free when the emergency measures end.
00:50There are others who are on preventative detention orders, Mr. Enoch, that we are dotting the I's and crossing the T's,
00:59because I don't want at the end of the SOE to let them fellas walk out.
01:02So all of them, as far as I'm concerned, should be charged.
01:06There are a couple of them who, because of the evidential threshold, we may not be able to meet it to pass with the DPP.
01:13But they're...
01:13Meaning you don't have enough evidence.
01:15We have intelligence who is trying to evidence it.
01:18Providing figures on arrests made across all police divisions, Guevara said 612 charges have been laid, including 436 serious crimes.
01:31Among these were eight murders, 35 kidnappings, 62 robberies, 185 firearm and ammunition offences,
01:3833 assaults on police, 65 narcotics offences, and 36 breaches of the peace.
01:45The commissioner pointed to incidents that highlighted the threats still being faced.
01:50He added that one of the reasons for calling the SOE was intelligence, that gangs were planning to target low enforcement officers.
01:57The gentleman who was detained at the prison, the firearm and the stolen vehicle, who they say, came to pick up a man who was getting released.
02:08Why are you coming to pick up a man with a stolen vehicle and a gun?
02:12You could hire a taxi and come and pick up the man.
02:15They were there for a particular purpose.
02:17And that is frightening, not only to me, but for other persons as well.
02:22The initial threat was dealt with, which was at that point in time.
02:27But there are persons outside.
02:29If you recognize, I told you, there are still 44 persons we are looking for to execute.
02:3344?
02:3444 of them still.
02:36To execute detention orders as well.
02:39They are not out there playing pitch and golly housing.
02:43They are out there committing crime.
02:44It is that criminal networks continue to operate despite the restrictions.
