Mark Bassant explains.
Transcript
00:00The launch of this new active directive patrol initiative by the TTPS is based on the premise that police officers
00:06should be able to respond to any call within a designated area across Trinidad and Tobago within 20 minutes or
00:13less.
00:14That was the hope of former Commissioner of Police McDonnell Jacob, who was one of the consultants who assisted in
00:19rolling out this project with the blessing of Commissioner of Police Alistair Guevara today.
00:24Jacob said that a new collaborative approach with the National Operations Centre and the TTPS will surely approve police's responsiveness
00:32and visibility to ensure crime prevention.
00:35And a scientific method is used, right? They call it the Copa Curve. The Copa Curve came about from Christopher
00:46Copa from the George Mason University.
00:49And you're looking at when you are actually setting up patrol range or you are setting up the whole area
00:58of a patrol sector.
01:00From one point to the other, it must not take the patrol more than 20 minutes to reach.
01:06The former Commissioner said he was optimistic this crime-fighting tool will ease citizens' fear.
01:11The anticipated outcome is an improved operational awareness, coordinating of the police exercise and operations.
01:22Our electronic monitoring system will be able to be dealt with more efficiently.
01:28The improved response time, which is crucial for the E999 and divisional patrols.
01:33The enhanced traffic and management operations, support for major events and management, sufficient support for the Criminal Investigations Department.
01:46Commissioner of Police Alistair Guevara said this was a decisive step in the transformation of policing in the country.
01:53Guevara said this kind of policing was proactive and not reactive,
01:56and was happy to say that the TTPS added another historic milestone by being the first in the Caribbean and
02:03Latin America to have electric vehicles as part of its fleet.
02:06Commissioner Guevara said the TTPS would also be rolling out other things in the not-too-distant future to increase
02:12the safety of citizens across the country.
02:15In the coming weeks, you will see the rollout of several other strategies which are geared towards bringing police presence
02:23and police services closer to.
02:26Your communities.
02:28The TTPS has always been present.
02:30Now we intend for the public to feel that presence in a more visible, accessible and meaningful manner.
02:38At the same time, our police IT department is building out the technical and technological backbone that will support this
02:49new era of policing.
