00:00A group of top amateur designers are being put through their paces as they compete for an
00:16exclusive mentorship with Britain's most loved fashion retailer Marks and Spencer
00:21this week it's all about women's wear no one else is having that that's us yeah I love leopard print
00:29this is challenging with the designers put under the microscope by our M&S experts what sets a great
00:37women's wear designer apart is passion creative flair not just what's happening now but predict
00:43what's coming in the future thinking about what the customers are going to want before they actually
00:47want it and this week's guest expert Frankie bridge I love leopard print now that it's all finished I
00:54think it looks so expensive eight designers remain in pursuit of the ultimate prize about in everything
01:00I'm stressed a mentorship with Marks and Spencer that will help them towards their shared dream
01:07please say you love the jacket please to dress the nation who's gonna come out on top
01:17hiya loves come on in after last week I really want to keep the momentum going
01:25athlete mentality's switched on now consistency is key well designers fancy seeing you here welcome you
01:34made it to week two yeah so week one was filled with a lot of highs and lows and this week I want it
01:41to be filled with just highs now I feel super real to step it up a notch and really lock in now we are
01:47about to enter pumpkin spiced latte season more commonly known as autumn is it warm is it cold does it come
01:58with whipped cream it's confusing time it certainly is here to make sure that your designs hit the sweet spot
02:05it's M&S's director of women's wear the one and only Maddie Evans
02:10and joining Maddie is a devoted follower of fashion once a member of the Saturdays now an icon every
02:20day of the week please welcome the one and only Frankie bridge pop superstar Frankie bridge swap the
02:27microphone for the mannequin and is now a leading fashion influencer and entrepreneur with their own
02:32clothing line quite literally under her belt welcome Frankie hi guys oh all right Frankie please could
02:46you reveal this week's women's words statement piece challenge so for this challenge we want you to
02:51design a women's autumn jacket I feel like it can dress up any outfit and make you look finished and
02:57polished so it needs to be something that's going to work hard so keep that in mind it tends to be more of
03:02an investment piece so think about how it takes you through the season right through from that end
03:07of summer all the way through to December and beyond as ever with the statement challenge it's about
03:13bringing your personality your personal style it's also about continuing to apply that commercial lens
03:19thinking about the customer all the time that's a big ask Maddie it is wow think about team okay
03:25designers you have four hours to design your autumn jacket and your time starts now
03:32oh my god all of a sudden Frankie from Saturdays is in front of me I wanted to either burst into tears or burst into the song
03:48oh hey Richie we're friends today we are enemies for enemies don't cross this line
03:58please put a fence up is the fabric room not open yet the fabric room is now open
04:05it's not green there's always accent colors that come through you know that big kind
04:10of overarching trends that complement all of those neutrals chocolate's a massive color at the moment
04:16there's always accent colors that come through you know that big kind of overarching trends that
04:23and the beiges.
04:25Ooh! Yeah, that's nice.
04:27That is a snot green. Classic flannel, innit?
04:29Snot green.
04:31There's always accent colours that come through,
04:33you know, the big kind of overarching trends
04:35that complement all of those neutrals.
04:37Chocolate's a massive colour at the moment, chestnut.
04:40Ooh, that brown is nice.
04:42I don't think I would go super bold
04:44because you've got to wear it with lots of different things.
04:47Yeah. Oh, this is nice.
04:49I think I'm going red and blue, I think.
04:51If you move into that autumn season,
04:53it's much less about print as well,
04:55so print is synonymous with the summer season.
04:57It's not that you don't ever have it,
04:59it's just less dominant.
05:01That's pretty. Thank you.
05:02So, if the customer's spending more money,
05:04they want more practicality in a jacket?
05:06Sometimes a hood's good, whether it's kind of part of the piece
05:09or it's embedded in the collar and you can take it in
05:11and you can take it out, but style has to lead.
05:14Mine isn't very practical, it's got a hood and it's not waterproof,
05:16but, like, I would still wear that.
05:18You'd still wear it, innit? I'd still wear it.
05:19Like, oh, this is interesting.
05:21Trench coat kind of vibe.
05:22Yeah, everybody wears those in Scotland.
05:24Yeah, you know.
05:25Well, the inspiration behind it is country walks.
05:28Me and the wife often take the kids out
05:30and I always visualise her in beautiful, stunning jackets, you know.
05:35I live with my wife and my two kids.
05:39The house is always full of energy.
05:41My kids are part of my creative world.
05:43I spent many time sewing with my little one in my arm,
05:47so I'm definitely inspired by my kids, you know.
05:49So, yeah, they are a driving force in terms of why I create.
05:53Winning a mentorship with M&S would mean everything to my family.
05:57My kids especially, it would inspire them and help them to believe
06:02that they can become anyone they want to be.
06:04I'm so used to just sewing pieces in the little corner of my flat.
06:09I'd love to just know more and soak up more knowledge.
06:12It would just be everything to me.
06:14A tailor-by-trade, Richie is adding his signature style to a trench coat,
06:18switching khaki for brown suede with check details.
06:21But that's not his only addition.
06:24I thought, let me just add a little bit of a bow tie in there,
06:26just to feminise it and make it a bit different.
06:29So, we'll see how that looks.
06:30A little bit of your own kind of flair.
06:31Definitely.
06:32Women's wear isn't necessarily your thing, is it?
06:34Not at all. Women's wear is not.
06:36But is this jacket giving you the chance to cross over
06:39with what you've learned in men's wear?
06:40Yes. 100%.
06:44Oh, flip sake. I cut through the fabric.
06:48Richie, how do you think it will affect him that he tailors for men?
06:52Usually in this is a women's jacket.
06:54There's definitely a difference,
06:56because obviously we have different physical bodies.
06:59But the finishing touch of the bow,
07:01that's quite a nice design detail.
07:03Yeah, I think.
07:07While Richie moves away from his comfort zone...
07:10Shock, I'm going for leopard print again.
07:12Leopard print. Again.
07:13Beautiful.
07:16Casey is sticking to what she knows.
07:18I am a bit worried that the judges might think
07:20that leopard print is all I really do,
07:22but I was really looking for quite a bold print in a wool fabric,
07:26and this just seems to be, like, the boldest choice.
07:29So, let's get sewing!
07:31Casey's fabric choice is a bold one,
07:33especially given that her leopard print collection
07:36was criticised by the M&S customers last week.
07:39There's too much leopard print.
07:41One leopard print item would be fine in a capsule collection.
07:44Three items in leopard print just wouldn't work.
07:48This week, Casey is designing a cropped jacket with a boxy cocooned fit
07:53and a single-button fastening.
07:55She's the only designer to incorporate a hood.
07:58It's quite an oversized hood just to keep you cosy
08:02because the whole purpose of the jacket's for warmth
08:04over keeping you dry or anything like that.
08:07So, I'll just take an umbrella.
08:09It's fine.
08:11So, Casey, leopard.
08:13For me, personally, I don't know how leopard can be subtle,
08:16but it's slightly more subtle.
08:17It is.
08:18It's not garish.
08:19No.
08:20And then I like that cocoon shape.
08:22And there's nothing better than a hood.
08:24I'm feeling stylish but cosy and cocooned at the same time.
08:28It could be really good.
08:30Yeah.
08:31It's giving me, like, Grace Jones or something.
08:33Yeah!
08:34Casey is not alone in her love of leopard print.
08:38That's what you're planning to do.
08:42Oh, that's very similar to me. Leopard print again.
08:44Oh, is it?
08:45Yeah.
08:46I will never, ever, ever have enough of leopard print.
08:49I love leopard print.
08:51Laura's field jacket is made from brown corduroy
08:54and she's hoping to hit the sweet spot with accents in her favourite print.
08:58So, I've got two pockets on the bottom, two pocket flaps,
09:01and then I've got a statement leopard print pocket to go on the front as well.
09:05I think what's worrying me with Laura is the leopard print with that brown.
09:09I'm not sure it goes that well.
09:11Yeah.
09:12Too much of a contrast.
09:13Yeah.
09:14It's giving Flintstone a little bit.
09:16Leopard print is getting its comeback this season, isn't it?
09:19And Julia, who's also on the field jacket.
09:22Mm-hmm.
09:23It's very similar to Laura's.
09:25So, I'm going to have to really give it a bit of vroom.
09:28She's using a combination of fabrics as well, isn't she?
09:31But her leopard print, I feel, is more subtle.
09:33Yes.
09:34So, I think if you're someone that's not as brave,
09:36it kind of blends in totally with the rest of the jacket.
09:39Mm-hmm.
09:40Seamstress Julia has turned her hand to many garments,
09:43but an autumn jacket is all new.
09:45It's the first time I've made, like, a casual jacket.
09:48As a northern girl, I tend not to wear jackets anyway.
09:52Even in the car, I just put her on a big jumper
09:54and hope it doesn't rain or I don't break down on the A1
09:57going up to Cramlington.
10:01Hello!
10:02Wow, so you've both got leopard print details
10:05and you've both gone for some sort of, like, field jacket.
10:08It's the battle of the jackets here.
10:10Who's going to come out on top?
10:12It may be similar, but Julia is hoping
10:15her subtle beige leopard print fabric,
10:17curved pockets and rounded-off collars
10:19will attract a more mature M&S customer.
10:22It means seek to the nana market.
10:24Yeah!
10:25You wear it with a scarf and...
10:27I love it.
10:29You make clothes for drag queens, don't you, sometimes?
10:31I do, yes.
10:32That's fab.
10:33We should think of a drag name for you.
10:35Sizzling Scissors.
10:37Or you could be Stitch Please.
10:40Ooh, yeah.
10:41Or you could be...
10:43Thready Mercury.
10:44Oh!
10:45That's really good.
10:46Yeah?
10:47Yeah!
10:48I'll leave you with that.
10:49Get on with it.
10:50Good luck!
10:52Thready Mercury, I love that.
10:55That drag name is so good.
10:58Thready Mercury.
10:59Just call me Thready.
11:01Hopefully they're both level.
11:04Oh, you've got your poppers on already?
11:07Yeah, I have.
11:08Oh, you're so ahead.
11:09Oh, that's really good.
11:11What have you still got to do?
11:13An awful lot again.
11:14An awful lot!
11:15Designers, you're halfway through the challenge.
11:19Good luck.
11:20Breathe.
11:21And just crack on.
11:22Keep stitching!
11:24His wife's show.
11:25Have I got a bogey?
11:26No, you're not.
11:27I mean, I'm not by no means a tailor, but I do like a structured silhouette.
11:39I'm just going for classic vibes.
11:43Bayley's design is a mix of a bomber jacket and blazer, with side pockets and pressed
11:48stud fastings to emulate a bomber, coupled with the straight fit and angular collar of
11:53a blazer.
11:54I've tried to go as M&S as I possibly can, while still being true to myself.
12:00I feel like I'm on Love Island or somewhere.
12:04My first taste of fashion going on a sewing machine was my textiles A-level.
12:09And, yeah, I loved it.
12:11And that's what I've carried on doing.
12:13So, coming out of uni and sort of struggling to get jobs in, like, the field that I really
12:17want, I went to a fortune teller, because I just wasn't really sure where my life was
12:22headed.
12:23And I sat down and had my cards read, and she said, you'll be entering into a contract,
12:29and it will be in fashion, jaw on the floor.
12:32So, we'll just have to see.
12:34Bayley is lending a blazer and a bomber, two really kind of key jackets for the season.
12:40In my head, I can't imagine how the two go together, but I do really like the materials.
12:44Yes, I do.
12:45I think they really complement each other.
12:50I'm still very much in a lot of pieces.
12:53It's a bit a mess right now.
12:56I won't lie.
12:58There's no end in sight at the moment.
13:01You can't press leather.
13:03Bayley has chosen an ambitious combination of fabrics, but they are not easy to work together.
13:08Wool's really forgiving, and you can press it, and it's sort of just...
13:12It loves the iron wool, but leather, absolutely not.
13:15Can't touch it.
13:16So, this is the tricky part, joining colors.
13:24Why is this fabric so slippy?
13:27Like, ridiculously slippy.
13:30It just keeps slipping and sliding all over the gaff.
13:33I'm stressed.
13:34Cut!
13:35Reset cameras.
13:36Vernon!
13:37Sir and Kay, please return the mannequin to props.
13:50I... yeah.
13:51I'm on an M&S shoot.
13:53Alright, see you in a bit.
13:54Sorry!
13:55Pass!
13:56welcome back to dress the nation where our eight remaining amateur designers are creating a wardrobe
14:08staple the autumn jacket the back looks cute it'll fasten by like coming over like that
14:17and then I'll have Preston's down if I've got time to do where Bailey has managed to
14:22get his leather and wool jackets assembled it's just this finishing like finishing the
14:28lapel and things like that how are you bro yeah not too bad you good must've got a jacket
14:32yeah man not doing too badly yeah look at that oh sleeves are coming up nice so my mom has this
14:39my mom has this clothing jacket that she wears everywhere and she absolutely loves it and my
14:45mom likes big accents things like that so hopefully I can make a jacket that she would actually wear
14:50that's the idea inspired by his mom Daniel has designed a quilted autumn jacket with tie fastenings
14:58and a large collar he's hoping his fabric choice will add a bit of fun we have a sleeve I think it's a
15:05really niche print yeah I think you're either that woman or you're not yes yeah it doesn't feel that
15:14seasonally appropriate either it's gonna get dirty yeah definitely is there you go imagine done just do a gilet
15:21oh stunning matches your outfit much like Daniel Joseph is inspired by a loved one so when I was 14 I
15:31actually lost my mum she passed away I guess it just made me realize that life is too short and you never
15:39know how much time you've got left you might as well do what you want as long as you're happy in
15:42the moment then I think that's all that matters really I really love that color yeah I think that
15:48color combo is really nice when I wake up in the morning it's the first thing I want to see colors
15:52just makes me happy and I just think the world needs more happiness Joseph is making cropped quilted
15:59jacket sticking to his signature colorful style it will be reversible with red on one side and blue on the
16:06the other so I'm essentially making two jackets and sewing them together good I have a jacket yeah now
16:14I've got to make another one oh what do you think about the color choice it feels a little bit primary
16:22yes yeah but naive yeah yeah oh I love the Saturdays I just can't believe she's here I'm so gassed as
16:29meet her surprise oh my gosh your eyes just went straight to Frankie yeah I'm a bit obsessed right
16:46now oh really I understand but have you been singing and sewing oh of course strong red dark yeah it's like
16:54something you'd wear to like one of those traffic light party I'm taking wait yeah listen I hope
17:03you've all fired up I feel alive I'm a bit unsure now if a bright red is is the right choice but I
17:22think I'm just going to stick to my guns I think that's kind of what you have to do as a designer
17:25designers you've got one hour left time flies babe oh god just see how time runs out so quickly chop chop
17:35Joseph isn't the only designer who has opted for a bold color choice I see it as a beautiful color
17:42some people may not like it but I think it's always important to go for stuff people will question
17:46as an ex-professional cyclist I'm definitely more competitive than most people and it definitely
17:55comes through when there's a challenge so I think I'm gonna have to make sure I don't show that too
18:01much but deep down I think I really want to win in it to win it again this week Alex has designed a
18:07chore jacket slightly cropped with a boxy fit her aim is to stand out with her choice of color
18:13something attractive about disgusting color literally yeah because everyone's afraid to
18:19use them but I think you should just dive in and give them a go absolutely so Alex I'm not sure about
18:25the color no it's it's quite bold it is oh but it is giving grass yes it is good it is definitely
18:34slash moss maybe that's what it is yeah yeah autumnal vibes yeah but let's see yeah
18:40design is you've got 30 minutes remaining go on give it some welly go for it go for it 30 minutes
18:51left to complete your autumn jacket time is on the yeses all right buttonholes baby I just don't know
18:59whether to go in with the press studs or not how much have you got left to do wait a bit it's like
19:05panic it's when I have a finished garment then I'm just doing one button to cinch it in AJ's got
19:10something to say ten minutes left I need a thimble ain't no going back now oh so I went for quite a
19:17statement button go big or go home I wish it was not the leopard print it's a bit tacky she's in no
19:24you will not you've got two minutes left gosh it's getting a bit intense though isn't it my hands are
19:33just shaking so much if it's not on your mannequin you should be panicking get it on I'll be lucky if I
19:39get this oh I love that that looks well good actually don't it there's so many threads wicked
19:47oh it's not going in five four three two one designers time's up away from your mannequins please well done
20:01I feel confident I don't want to allow myself to feel anything else it's not to the standard I would
20:09have hoped to have achieved but the idea is there it's still I think very commercial and but a little
20:16bit different from standard I hope I'm not gonna get the reputation as the cat lady it's definitely not
20:26intentional it's just somehow I've ended up back here again I forgot to put my bow the signature bow
20:32that I wanted her body happens it is what it is the designers autumn jackets are ready for inspection
20:45well they have displayed their personal style and shown they have what it takes to design one-off pieces
20:51for Marks and Spencer with their combination fabric autumn jackets have Richie or Bailey hit the sweet
20:59spot you know what I really like the colors and I really like the materials that you've chosen I
21:05think they complement each other really really well it's got a real kind of heritage vibe as well so I
21:11think you've done an excellent job all right Richie come on up femininity that for me is what's lacking
21:17and can clearly see that you have mastered menswear but just adding that feminine touch I think would
21:24have made a real difference for me if you took away the check and put the bow on I think I'd have liked
21:29it a lot more maybe where did the bow go yes it got lost in time the experts were clear that neutral is key
21:40in autumn so have Joseph and Alex taking it too far with their bold color choices I was really unsure
21:48about the color but now that it's all finished I think it looks so expensive you do have to obviously
21:54have impact with your product in a store and I do think this is a head-turning piece well done I
21:59really love the versatility of it and the fact that you can turn it inside out and wear it in a
22:06completely different way I think people love that nowadays you want more wear for your money color
22:11wise for me I think there could have been a more autumnal kind of palette maybe we would have just
22:16tipped the balance but really well made and well done has Daniel hit the mark for autumn the bows are
22:23something that a lot of people are buying at the moment I think it's probably more of a summer jacket
22:28than an autumn jacket the fabric is not something that I would wear and I wonder whether the Marks
22:35and Spencer's customer would how will Julia and Laura fair with their leopard print feel jackets for
22:43me this separate prints quite loud but I really love the shape and the gold buttons it's just a
22:49little bit too contrasting for me Bette Lynch would absolutely love that I love leopard print and I
22:57feel like this is a really safe and easy way to wear it but I don't love the shape and general style it
23:04doesn't feel the most modern and probably not the most stylish as well with leopard prints not hitting
23:11the mark so far will Casey have more success with her hooded number I think you've done an absolutely
23:17brilliant job of answering that brief I can see a lot of people being really attracted to this
23:23I personally feel like this is something that I would wear you know doing the school round with
23:27pair of leggings and a pair of trainers I feel like it would just make the outfit come together so for
23:31me it works stunning garment really well done thank you okay designers you've heard what our experts
23:44think so now it's time to find out where you've been placed in the statement page challenge in my
23:51base order in last place this week is Julia okay I think they were quite fair to be honest I wasn't
24:05happy with the end product I've got there's a team challenge to go so I can maybe pull it back with
24:09that in seventh place was Daniel sixth Richie Laura was fair in fourth place is Joseph well done Joseph in third place we
24:29have Alex well done Alex so therefore the silver medalist in second place is Bailey come forward Bailey well done which means of course the winner of the statement piece challenge is Casey
24:57well done Casey excellent store
25:04ah look at how happy you look
25:06ha ha ha ha buzzing well done you're feeling good yeah I'm feeling amazing thank you it feels amazing to come first and I completely did not expect it at all it's definitely given me a massive confidence boost but yeah I still definitely will be pushing myself as far as I can
25:24coming up on dress the nation designers your next collection challenge tensions mount
25:31it's like a lot of intense conversation it's like a lot of intense conversation
25:35it does look intense

26:59it's relentless
27:00so think about kind of transformative outfits that work together and that the customers feel as confident coming in to work with so they don't feel out of place but equally they feel really really special when they go out in the evening and have a date night with their girlfriends
27:17now remember it's not just our experts that are going to be taking a close look at your designs the M&S customer will once again be making an appearance in the design studio
27:28you've got a total of five hours to complete your day to night collection
27:32good luck
27:33good luck
27:34cause your time starts
27:35now
27:36yeah let's go
27:38go go go
27:39come on Daniels
27:40that's it right we're going straight in
27:42come around come around
27:43get my sketch good sketch
27:44so this was a silhouette I was thinking of
27:47the winning team will be safe and automatically through to next week so there's everything to soar for
27:52day to night what can she wear
27:54right come on Julia
27:55we've got this girl
27:57Maddy the collection challenge is from day to night
28:01how did they get that
28:03it might be about coming with something that's more kind of evening wear
28:08but applying whether it's a jacket or a cardigan and then you kind of shed one of those items
28:13and then you accessorize it and then you're ready to go for a night out
28:17you can't go wrong with a nice dress
28:19yeah I think it's something that you can dress up and dress down quite easily a nice dress
28:22I think maybe a jacket might
28:24but you want to still see the dress underneath so maybe something a bit cropped
28:27we've got this we've got this
28:28team Joseph's day to night design includes a flowy boxy dress where shape can be added for the evening
28:35and a cropped jacket which Joseph hopes will add an air of sophistication
28:40this is going to be a very Chanel I'm very happy
28:42good
28:43having both received critique for going too bold
28:46Joseph has decided to switch things up
28:49we've gone a bit muted this time for showing our versatility and adaptability to what M&S is looking for
28:55then I think we're onto a winner
28:56hopefully they've had a good conversation about what's going to complement each other
29:04because that's the other thing to think about
29:06how do they work together really well as an outfit
29:08I'm thinking like a tie neck top
29:12dead long ties
29:13dead long ties to the floor
29:15really long
29:16you can bring it round to the front and tie it in a nice pussy bow tie
29:19okay that's such a good idea
29:21Team Bailey are designing a top and trousers combo
29:24the top will have a large bore feature which can be styled differently from day to night
29:29paired with Julia's Capri style trousers
29:31what sort of fabric are we going to look for?
29:34well you know me I like me black and white
29:37you're wearing black and white today
29:38I'm wearing black and white
29:39Julia love her
29:41she's wicked
29:42she's been sewing longer than I've been alive
29:44oh look at that
29:45oh my god
29:46how sheer are we?
29:47double it up
29:48no one else is having that
29:49that's ours
29:50I want to get you something nice for your bottom mirror
29:52no I think that's perfect actually
29:54right come on Julia
29:55we've got this girl
29:57you're in a day to night outfit
29:59you're in a day to night outfit
30:01so are you
30:02I'm in a day to night outfit
30:03I'll get a taxi
30:04I think in M&S they always have a statement piece you know in the window
30:11yeah
30:12and this is like the statement look
30:14using burgundy denim team Alex have designed a co-ord
30:18with a wide leg trouser paired with an off the shoulder button up top
30:22which Alex hopes will stand out
30:24I've not seen that before ever
30:26no
30:27is it day time enough as well?
30:30I would go in a meeting with that
30:31you know a little bit of shoulder
30:32yeah
30:33Alex and Laura
30:34Alex is the design lead
30:36but I don't know how it's going to kind of fare when Laura is a teacher
30:40so she's used to being in control
30:42so Alex is really good at draping but I don't do any draping
30:46I always follow patterns
30:48patterns
30:49a good seamstress matches the seams
30:52a good designer follows their heart
30:55and cuts as they go
30:57that's like a lot of intense conversations
31:00it does look intense
31:01you're just going to let go like when you just unleash yourself
31:06I think because of the engineering are more structured
31:10there we go
31:12that's called team work right there
31:14like team Alex, Casey and Richie have also designed a co-ord
31:18they're combining a wide leg trouser with a cropped tailored jacket in classic blue denim
31:24we're going for the double denim and we think that denim is the perfect fabric to take it right through from day to night
31:30from day to night
31:31no more animal print
31:32staying away from the animal print today
31:34but will that combination of skills give them the edge?
31:37I need to understand more about the woman
31:39so yeah very important when it comes to the M&S customer
31:42I feel like I've got like the feminine vision
31:45and Rich has the tailoring skills
31:48the tailoring, yeah
31:51so what are you making?
31:52so we've got like a co-ord
31:54nice co-ord going on
31:55that we think you know could easily be styled up or down
31:58yeah
31:59you're working solidly as a co-ord
32:01yeah yeah
32:02as a co-ord
32:03yeah very good
32:04we are too right?
32:05yeah we're a great co-ord
32:06co-ord
32:11designers that's one hour gone
32:15hurry up!
32:18or is it not tuned on?
32:19it's on but it's low
32:28is it plugged in?
32:33yes!
32:35oh you've got it on off
32:36oh is it off?
32:37oh I thought I had it on
32:38there you go
32:41just needed burn
32:43wicked thank you
32:45I'm just pinning her on the mannequin
32:47just to see how we're going
32:49because it's a very technically difficult piece
32:52Alex's off the shoulder top is coming together
32:56would be a bit formal for me to wear at work to school but I love it
33:01I worry at the top obviously it's meant to be day and tonight
33:04yeah
33:05I think off the shoulder is quite limiting for a lot of women in the day
33:09when you're working and in the day
33:10I'd wear this to work
33:12if I worked in like an office or something I would
33:14yeah I think it's definitely for an office
33:16school I think
33:17I love your dresses
33:19I think commerciality I've really got to focus on that
33:21and make sure I'm going for something really commercial
33:26tricky
33:27ever confident Alex is having a wobble
33:30this is challenging
33:33yeah
33:34really challenging
33:35I don't know
33:38I'm doubting everything
33:39Laura you know what I'm thinking
33:44it will be 2
33:472 evening
33:48yeah
33:49I think we just need to have a think about
33:50how it's going to turn out
33:52and how it's going to look
33:53whether it's going to be versatile enough
34:03I
34:04yeah I'm on an M&S shoot
34:05alright
34:06see you in a bit
34:07sorry
34:08where are you going?
34:15where are you going?
34:16where are you going?
34:17AJ Walsh
34:18I don't know when you get it all
34:19now
34:24welcome back to dress the nation
34:26where Alex is having a crisis of confidence
34:29in the day to night collection challenge
34:31it's too heavy I think
34:33with the denim on denim
34:34with the denim sleeves
34:35with that
34:36I just keep it really simple
34:37I agree
34:38because it's still the vision
34:39with the lapel
34:41it's just
34:42more refined
34:43it's more M&S
34:44Alex has scrapped the sleeves
34:46and decided against an off the shoulder design
34:49she's now making a long asymmetric waistcoat
34:52I think what we were going for was a little bit too evening
34:56it wasn't fully day to night
34:58and it just wasn't sitting right
34:59it wasn't feeling right in my gut
35:01so I just followed that voice
35:03and we just transformed it
35:04made it a little bit more wearable
35:07Alex has got a lot more flair when it comes to design
35:10so I did take a little bit of a back seat
35:12and then I think my input pared it back a little bit
35:15you're in the zone
35:17we are
35:18it's so quiet
35:19I know
35:20I mean Alex you've got quite the game face though
35:22what do you do to psych your opponents out?
35:25so at the start of a race you roll up on the track
35:27there's two riders like 2,000 people in the velodrome
35:30silence falls
35:32and you just next to each other
35:34hands on bars
35:35then you just stare
35:37you can't look away
35:38come on
35:39let's do this
35:403, 2, 1
35:42oh I thought I had to look at you
35:43I've lost already
35:44yeah you've lost
35:45yeah
35:46Oli
35:47get out
35:48Frankie!
35:49do do do
35:51with a slightly less competitive spirit
35:54Bailey and Julia are enjoying a slower pace
35:57so it's always just been like my elders
36:00and I've never really had like young people
36:03so that's probably why I got on with you so well I reckon
36:06oh
36:07yeah
36:08you're like a little piece of home Julia
36:10those two are so calm
36:12they're just chatting about their lives
36:13have you got any pets?
36:14no I haven't no
36:16I used to have a dog
36:17they look like they're kindred spirits
36:19they're getting on like a house on fire
36:21what kind of school life did you have?
36:23they've gone for all black
36:25so quite a literal interpretation of an evening outfit
36:30yeah
36:31Julia
36:32yeah
36:33how long neck?
36:34how low?
36:35I think quite low
36:36quite low
36:37because the pussy ball is going to cover it
36:38yeah
36:39you're so right
36:40even though you have the bow on
36:41yeah
36:42I think for a lot of women a fully see through
36:44yeah
36:45top is quite a lot
36:46yeah
36:47and it looks quite eveningy
36:48it does
36:49I've got my back at my front
36:51good
36:52what do we think of the...
36:53lift it up the body
36:54I think it needs to come in a bit no?
36:55it needs to come in a bit
36:56it's a bit
36:57it's a bit boxy
36:58Joseph and Daniel
36:59yeah
37:00it is a classic in your wardrobe
37:02a little kind of Chanel-y jacket
37:03yeah
37:04you can dress it up
37:05you can dress it down
37:06but they're pairing that back with a dress
37:07yeah
37:08so it'd be quite interesting to see
37:09I'm excited to see it
37:10how they work together
37:11yeah
37:12yeah I like that
37:13it's coming together
37:14yeah
37:15you can dress
37:16yeah
37:17designers
37:18you've got one hour left
37:20no way
37:21come on
37:22the clocks are broken
37:23yes Gaff
37:24that's why
37:25um
37:26how short
37:27you don't want it super long
37:28we want to show off the details
37:30the nice pleated details that we have in the trousers
37:32Richie is keen to prove he's getting the hang of women's wear
37:36I think that's perfect
37:38here is
37:39that's stunning
37:40cool
37:41I'm a massive fan of double denim
37:42he obviously plays into Richie's strength
37:44but it'd be interesting to see if he builds on the feedback
37:47because a lot of his tailoring has felt quite menswear
37:50quite boxy
37:51less of a fitted silhouette
37:52love that
37:53love that
37:54that we get
37:55that kind of shaping in there
37:56yeah make it more dramatic
37:57more dramatic innit
37:58let's just make it dramatic as possible
37:59like real copper cinch it in
38:00come on designers
38:0130 minutes left
38:02see time just goes so wet
38:04it's a bit of sleepover I've not been invited to
38:06what's going on here
38:07I've transitioned from day to night
38:09get it
38:10with time ticking
38:11some of the designers are adding details
38:13to their collections
38:14which they are hoping will help to meet the day to night brief
38:19I have to make a channel for the drawstring that's going to pull everything in at the waist
38:24just putting a bit of rope through these channels that I've sewn to create that gathered effect
38:29get your belt loops on
38:30yeah
38:31because that'll look nice
38:32do you think?
38:33banging
38:34it's quite a lot of stuff to pull through quite a small space
38:36it's just quite fiddly
38:37I'm all fingers and thumbs like I can't get it through
38:39I'm getting stressed
38:41designers
38:42you've got just 10 minutes to go
38:44just chill
38:46honestly I've had a mare
38:48I've had a mare
38:49can you hand it for me?
38:50do you have time?
38:51yeah I'll do it
38:52so I'm just going to get the buttons on
38:53oh she's looking really chic now
38:55yeah
38:56we've removed that excess
38:57we're worried we might get critiques for no pockets
39:00so what I'll do is I'll sew the channel back on
39:02and then I'll just tie it around the waist
39:03right should we start getting a dress
39:05DISHIDERS!
39:06is that how you're doing it?
39:07yeah
39:08you've got one minute!
39:10oh my god
39:11that's it
39:12that slipped on
39:14door start panicking
39:15but I can see a naked mannequin
39:17ooh
39:18droopy drawers
39:20girl
39:21are they some nice trousers?
39:22it's fine
39:23your collar looks gorgeous
39:24she's nice isn't she?
39:26next girl
39:27can't go wrong
39:28should we do the pussy bow at the front?
39:30oh I'll eat that
39:31I'll do a bow
39:32I hope we live to see another day
39:35alright designers
39:36five
39:37four
39:38three
39:39two
39:40one
39:41there you go
39:42well done gang
39:43love ya
39:44we did it
39:45yeah
39:46super happy
39:47I think the black colour palette works well
39:49me and Julia, dream team, smashed it
39:53honestly
39:54incredible
39:55oh my god
39:56incredible
39:57I felt really ferocious today to kind of chase a win
40:00I just hope there's some good responses from everyone
40:04don't worry
40:05I think it hits the brief completely
40:07because it's understated enough that the average M&S customer will be happy to wear it
40:11and I feel like it looks expensive enough that they can feel luxurious and glamorous in it
40:14okay
40:19okay
40:20experts Maddie and Frankie have examined the designs
40:24this is nerve-wracking isn't it?
40:25it's judgment time
40:26it's no time to unleash the M&S customers and find out their thoughts
40:31I hope that the customers love it and I think we've really created the collection that speaks for itself
40:37you ready KC?
40:38I really like it
40:39I love the ruching detail on the leg
40:43that's a lovely different option that you don't normally get
40:46they're loving the trailers
40:47they're loving the trailers
40:48I think a wide leg chalzer is a good
40:49go-to
40:50it really is
40:51yeah
40:52and the shape of the neckline and the appell as well
40:54it's fresh and different
40:55jeez
40:56come on
40:57I can see on the mannequin as you enter the store
40:59I'm pleased with that overall
41:00I definitely love the top
41:03I love the way there's like a scarf bit
41:06you've got this lovely belt
41:08that actually she has it up so you can take that off in the daytime
41:11which is a normal belt on it just with some pumps
41:14and then in the evening have your heels
41:16so it's interesting that she said she'd wear it in the daytime
41:19yeah she did
41:20because it feels more evening to us
41:22yeah
41:23it hasn't got pockets that's something I don't
41:26I always do like a bit of a pocket
41:28I'm not a big fan of black colour so
41:30more like an evening wear
41:32fair enough
41:33can't really say more than that
41:35you could make it in a different colour
41:36absolutely
41:40I haven't taken my eyes off a bit since I walked in the room
41:42it's so nice
41:44the colour
41:45the fact that it's angled and not in the centre
41:47I think is what gives it the statement
41:49well thank god she changed it
41:50yeah
41:51yeah
41:52and then you have the wide leg as well
41:54oh I just I'm in love with it
41:56I would wear this
41:57I'm really happy with the trousers
41:59I knew you could do it though
42:01yeah
42:02they definitely followed the brief
42:03they're having it during the day
42:05and to the evening it's wonderful
42:07love it
42:08oh they're both very taken by this one
42:12but I have one concern
42:14I just feel it might be a bit restricting around the boob area
42:18just of the way that the buttons are falling
42:21but love the pants love the colour
42:23I'm so happy
42:24yeah I'm really happy as well
42:28there's my jacket
42:29please say you love the jacket please
42:30yeah
42:31and the dress obviously
42:32the dress itself
42:33it is very office like
42:35it's just one block colour
42:36so I think for me
42:37I would just add more accessories to bring it out in the night time
42:40it's very like flowy
42:42very free
42:43very bright
42:44if it was going to be like into the evening
42:46I would like something a little bit more fitted
42:48I mean the shape of the dress is actually so nice
42:50so I think you should be very proud
42:51thank you
42:52the jacket is beautiful
42:53but I just don't think it hits the brief
42:55it's too daytime for me
42:57it probably means more day than the rest of them
43:00well I think you can wear it in the evening so I think whatever
43:03yeah
43:07taking on board the customer's views
43:09the experts must now decide who is still in the running for the dream design mentorship
43:14and who isn't M&S material
43:18let's talk about the day that's just been
43:21who has impressed you the most Maddie
43:25the standout has to be Alex for me
43:28she's just consistently delivering
43:30and she led the team today
43:32she led Laura
43:33and did you like that collection
43:35I would definitely wear that outfit
43:37really
43:38I loved it
43:39it was pretty seamless
43:40yeah
43:41well actually I think you'll find there were lots of seams in there
43:43but they were executed very well
43:45Frankie who's impressed you the most?
43:47I really liked Casey
43:49I really loved her jacket
43:50Casey definitely feels like she's kind of blossoming
43:53yeah
43:54and growing
43:55okay
43:56so who is in danger of leaving the competition tonight?
44:00we love Daniel's personality
44:02but he just doesn't get that balance between
44:04you know his own personal style
44:06that statement piece
44:07and really bringing a commercial lens to it
44:10anybody else?
44:11for me Julia's definitely one of them
44:14um
44:15I know
44:16I'm sorry
44:17but I just worry
44:18she's not got that kind of
44:19contemporary modern design edge
44:21that she's bringing to her
44:23kind of creations
44:24mmm
44:25yeah
44:26sounds like you've got a tough decision on your hands
44:28we do
44:29we do
44:30well done designers
44:33another collection challenge in the bag
44:36a bag for life of course
44:37we can now reveal the team with the must-have collection
44:43and safely through to next week is
44:46Alex's team
44:54yay
44:55well done Alex
44:59well done Laura
45:00excellent stuff
45:01without doubt
45:02stand out peace
45:03I think it's so beautiful
