00:00Once again, the hunt is on for Britain's next big name in fashion.
00:06Nine more outstanding amateur designers from around the nation will compete
00:10for a chance to work with a true British icon, Marks & Spencer.
00:16As a stalwart of the British high street for over 140 years,
00:20this time Marks & Spencer is on a mission to nurture raw talent
00:23and help one individual extend their own brand.
00:27Last year we had a fantastic set of designers,
00:30but I've got a really good feeling that this year is going to be even better.
00:33So I'm really confident over the next few weeks we're going to find a real superstar.
00:38Over the next five weeks, our nine designers will work both individually...
00:42Really freaking out.
00:44...and in teams.
00:45Lead designer, what are you thinking?
00:46You don't like that?
00:48Sexy, would you wear that?
00:49Done right.
00:50As they bid to impress the guest experts...
00:53I look at that and I just would like to try it on.
00:55I think it looks so expensive.
00:57Did we turn in an M&S expert?
00:59I think it's a really bold and daring design.
01:03Definitely can see it in our stores.
01:05And of course some real life M&S customers.
01:08Looks a bit plain.
01:10Whatever.
01:10Only one can win this life-changing opportunity.
01:13A chance to work alongside Marks & Spencer.
01:15There is so much talent up and down the country.
01:19So I'm hoping we really find some untapped talents that we can nurture and can go out into
01:25the fashion industry and really establish themselves.
01:28I'm a genius.
01:28Who will have their winning designs sold in stores around the country?
01:32You've got two minutes to go!
01:34The clock's a broken, Jessica.
01:35I swear I am.
01:36I'm just disappointed in myself.
01:37And who will quite literally be given the task to dress the nation?
01:43That's fashion.
01:44Come on in, designers.
01:52Welcome to dress the nation.
01:55And the crowd go wild!
01:58That's right.
01:59Just like shoulder pads and leopard print, we are back.
02:03So excited.
02:04I can't believe I'm actually here and I've been chosen.
02:07It's a dream come true.
02:08There are a bit of nerves, but I know the minute I get in that room, I'm going to kill it.
02:12Once again, the search is on to find Britain's brightest fashion design, rising star.
02:20In five weeks, one of you will win this huge prize, an ongoing mentorship.
02:25With Marks and Spencers, it really is the prize that money cannot buy.
02:30I'm really excited about the idea of working with people from M&S and to get their opinions
02:34and advice.
02:35I think it would all be so valuable for me at this point in my career.
02:38That's right.
02:39You'll be given exclusive access to the industry-leading design, marketing and merchandising teams,
02:46all with the aim of helping you kickstart your dream career.
02:51I'm self-taught, so there's a lot about fashion and the industry that I have no clue about.
02:58It would put me one step closer to achieving my dreams.
03:01Not only that, but at least one of your winning designs will be sold in M&S.
03:08Such a good prize.
03:10Now, like every good shopper knows, there's only one place to start, and that's women's wear.
03:15So, let's start by introducing someone who's very familiar with the position you're all in.
03:19Straight out of college, she worked her way up from an admin assistant
03:22and is now director of women's wear for Marks and Spencers.
03:25Maddie Evans, everyone.
03:26So, good to see you.
03:28Good to see you, too.
03:29Can't wait to see what you've got in store for us.
03:32Our guest expert is a woman whose name is synonymous with style.
03:37Please welcome Jade Jagger.
03:40As a designer, It's Girl, Vogue cover star and member of Rock and Roll royalty,
03:48Jade is a verified fashion superstar.
03:50So lovely. Welcome, Jade.
03:56Thank you. Hi, everybody.
03:58Hello.
04:00Please, can you tell our designers what they will be creating
04:03for their first Women's Wear Statement Piece Challenge?
04:07We're looking for you to design and create a dress for autumn,
04:11something that's versatile enough to go to lunch with your friends or go to work in.
04:15It is a statement piece.
04:17It is about expressing your own personal style.
04:19So we do expect that kind of flair to come through.
04:23But it is also about commercial viability.
04:27You have four hours.
04:28Good luck to you all.
04:30Your time starts now.
04:33The designers have just four hours to create an autumn dress
04:36that makes a statement about their personal design style
04:39in a commercial and fashion-forward garment.
04:43Right.
04:45Got my toolbox.
04:46The experts will then judge their finished garments
04:49and rank them from ninth to first place.
04:53I think the nerves are sitting now.
04:55It's like, it's real.
04:58So, the statement piece challenge.
05:00My dear, why an autumn dress?
05:02Yeah, not an easy one, actually.
05:04But dresses are really important to our customer in autumn.
05:07So much so, we sell almost quarter of a million.
05:09Jed, what does an autumn dress look like for you?
05:12It's about the fabric, so something that's a little bit thicker,
05:16like denim or a lighter wool.
05:19There's so much fabric.
05:20There is.
05:21There's too much choice.
05:23I'd take the Aladdin's cave.
05:24Ooh!
05:25I'm just going to take two, just in case.
05:27What colours are you looking for?
05:29Neutrals are a big trend at the moment.
05:31Avoid bright.
05:32Guys, I've done it.
05:32I think I found the one.
05:33And go for something much, much richer.
05:36Yeah, that looks about right.
05:38But also, they've got to have in their heads the commercial side.
05:42Versatility and breadth of appeal are absolutely critical.
05:46A tough task ahead.
05:47Really tough.
05:48Do-do-do-do-do-do.
05:51Do-do-do-do-do-do-do.
05:53With 40 years' experience working as a seamstress,
05:56Julia's hoping to measure up to the challenge.
05:59My mannequins at home have got names,
06:02so I've got a size 12, who's Betty,
06:04and I've got a size 18, who's Beryl.
06:05And I talk to them.
06:09I've always said I could probably sew with my eyes closed.
06:12In fact, I had a detached retina a couple of years ago,
06:16and I had to sew with only, like, one eye.
06:19I've always had an urge to, like, produce my own clothing line,
06:23but never had the opportunity,
06:24because I've always had to earn a living.
06:28Sadly, I lost my partner of 25 years, nearly four years ago.
06:32I nursed him through cancer.
06:34That's what makes me feel, now, this is my time.
06:38I'm 60-year-old, and I've got one road ahead of me,
06:42and I'm taking that road.
06:47Hi, Julia.
06:48Hiya.
06:49Sorry to disturb you.
06:50Tell us a little bit about your design.
06:51I've worked a lot with braids,
06:53and I find a lot of, like, the mothers kind of find a dress
06:56that's quite suitable for them.
06:58Right.
06:58So I'm often asked to add extra panels,
07:01add sleeves to dresses.
07:02So slightly more modest.
07:04Yes.
07:04Have you ever done a wedding dress with pockets?
07:06I've altered plenty with, yeah, it's quite the trend now.
07:09Lipstick and a phone.
07:10Julia's more conservative design includes long sleeves,
07:23an optional modesty panel at the chest,
07:25and ruched waist detailing to adjust the fit.
07:28That's the front.
07:30This is the side.
07:32And you'll pull them that way.
07:33It is a pretty complex garment she's designing and making.
07:38Um, I mean, quite an elegant colour.
07:40Yeah, yeah.
07:41Julia, how many dresses do you think you've ever made in your life?
07:43When I used to produce them,
07:45I could make three dresses in two hours.
07:48Three dresses?
07:49Do you know how many I've made?
07:50How many?
07:51This is the first one.
07:52It's not all.
07:55I'm Joseph, I'm 24, and I'm from the New Forest.
07:57This is my favourite piece I've ever made.
08:00A hat.
08:02I can't get enough of colour.
08:04The world is drab enough as it is.
08:06And especially moving to London,
08:07when I'm on the underground
08:08and I see everyone in their suits grey, blue, black.
08:11Come on, have a bit of colour in your life.
08:14I wanted to go for a fabric that represented me,
08:17so I've gone for something very kind of primary colour, very fun.
08:21Joseph's first ever dress showcases his love of bright colours
08:25with bold red, yellow and blue stripes.
08:29But will the colourful design hit the autumnal brief?
08:34Ooh, it's a bit aggressive, isn't it?
08:37So, Joseph and his Technicolor dream coat.
08:40I know.
08:41Is it something you would wear?
08:43I mean, I actually love the colours of it.
08:45Yeah.
08:45But I think it's difficult for autumn.
08:48Oh, I'm a genius.
08:50Mm-hmm.
08:51For sales assistant, Alex,
08:52an autumnal colour palette is key
08:54to her statement dress design.
08:57Well, when I think of autumn,
08:58one of my favourite clothes is, like, burgundy.
09:00It's really rich and, like,
09:01makes you want to have, like, a mulled wine
09:03as you think towards Christmas.
09:06Being in this competition is really surreal,
09:09but I feel calm right now.
09:11I think it's the athlete mentality within me.
09:14From the age of 13 to 18,
09:16I trained and raced on the velodrome
09:19as a track cyclist, sprinter,
09:21alongside British Cycling.
09:22I was aiming for the Olympics,
09:24but just missed out.
09:26It's crazy how your career can be decided
09:28on 0.3 seconds.
09:31I've since sold my bike
09:33and said goodbye to that chapter of my life.
09:35I really wanted to be more creative.
09:38Winning this and getting a mentorship
09:39could change the trajectory of my whole career.
09:44Hello!
09:45Hi!
09:46You're our Derbyshire girly.
09:47I am, yeah.
09:48Big history of fashion in Derbyshire, isn't there?
09:51Vivian Westwood was born there.
09:52Yeah, right round the corner from me, actually.
09:55Is this what your look is inspired by today?
09:56This is, like, something that Vivian Westwood would do, no?
09:59I looked a lot at the round where I come from.
10:02Everything's rounded and soft and fluid,
10:04so I thought, combine all that
10:05and, you know, make something commercial.
10:08Alex is hoping her Derbyshire-inspired check dress
10:11will win over the judges.
10:13But will the backless design be too risque
10:16for the average M&S customer?
10:18Very sexy. Would you wear that?
10:20Damn right.
10:21How do you feel about the neck?
10:23The halter neck top.
10:24Why not?
10:25Too showy?
10:26Yeah.
10:26I'm here for it.
10:27Yeah?
10:27Best of luck.
10:28Thank you so much.
10:29Ciao, ciao.
10:29See you later.
10:31All right, let's get this done.
10:34What's your thoughts on Alex's dress?
10:36It's a lovely shape and design.
10:38Mm-hmm.
10:38The nod to Vivian is always something that we love.
10:42Always relevant.
10:43Always relevant for us.
10:44Forever.
10:44But I think that showing my shoulder can be too sexy.
10:48Has she thought about the practicality?
10:50You know, it's autumn, winter.
10:51You know, is that going to feel appropriate?
10:55There's certain aspects I'm aware of that might be a bit risky,
10:59but I'm going to stick to my guns,
11:01and I really hope that they like it.
11:04Great.
11:05All right.
11:06Next one.
11:08Designers, you are halfway through the challenge.
11:11Yay!
11:12Oh, my God.
11:13I feel like the time is absolutely flying by now.
11:16Yeah, you do as well.
11:18Try not to cut my tie off.
11:21Do you know what, right now?
11:22Something tells me that you know a thing or two about the autumn dress.
11:25I can understand why you think that, AJ,
11:27but I think we should leave it to our experts.
11:32Definitely a good challenge to start with.
11:34Dresses are my thing.
11:36I love wearing dresses.
11:38I love making dresses.
11:39I am an engineering teacher in a secondary school.
11:44It can be hard work sometimes, but it's really rewarding.
11:48As much as I love teaching, fashion is where I'd love to be.
11:53I wouldn't say I'll use engineering dresses,
11:55but it's definitely very similar processes,
11:59following steps and constructing things
12:03and thinking about how pattern pieces are going to go together.
12:06Actually, yeah, I suppose I do use engineering.
12:08I'm going to start gathering the ruffle
12:21and putting the ruffle into place.
12:23From a commercial perspective,
12:25she's the only floral print in the room.
12:27It seems one of the most commercial.
12:29Yeah, 100%.
12:30And brilliantly constructed ruffles down the front.
12:33Another designer who's pinning her hopes
12:37on her complex design details
12:38is Dundee retail assistant, Casey.
12:42My dress is all, like, pleated, so it's very, like, drapey.
12:46I'm excited. I'm excited to see her.
12:49In Dundee and in Scotland, probably, in general,
12:53there's not many fashion design opportunities.
12:56My dream would be to work my way up through the fashion industry,
13:01so I think this competition's an amazing opportunity for me.
13:04My dress is all about empowering women
13:06and shaping and flattering the women's form,
13:08so I'm going to be using pleats to tailor in my shirt dress
13:12and create a nice silhouette as well.
13:14Just go big or go home.
13:16Casey's pleated two-piece dress
13:18can be detached into a top and skirt,
13:21making it more versatile for the customer.
13:24But with so many hand-stitched pleats to completing the time...
13:27I just need to see how much I still need to take it in.
13:30..she'll need to work fast
13:32to make sure she has something on the mannequin.
13:34Oh, God, I don't think I'm going to be finished.
13:37Just do what you can. Just do what you can at this point.
13:41It is quite clever in that she's done a two-in-one.
13:44You know, customers really respond to that versatility,
13:47but it's a lot more work.
13:49Quite a complex design.
13:51I don't know if you've seen some of the pin-tucking.
13:53It's vast.
13:54Why is it not coming?
13:56So annoying.
13:57So I think she probably feels the time pressure.
13:59Why did I do this?
14:01Why did I decide to make it so complicated?
14:04I'm not going to finish.
14:06I'm really freaking out.
14:09Really, really freaking out.
14:11I'm literally shaking.
14:17Our nine amateur designers
14:23are well over halfway
14:25through their first statement piece challenge.
14:27Oh, come on, girl.
14:30Creating a statement autumn dress
14:32that combines their personal style
14:33with commercial appeal.
14:35Oh, my God, I just sawed my hem the wrong way.
14:38But for 23-year-old Casey,
14:41her design isn't going to plan.
14:43Oh, Susan, they're very...
14:46It looks good.
14:47No, it doesn't.
14:48It does?
14:48It doesn't.
14:49It's the worst thing I've ever made in my whole life.
14:52It's just an awful look.
14:54I've really tried to do too much in the time,
14:56and it just isn't paying off.
14:59Another designer who's hoping to impress with her dress
15:02is antisocial behaviour officer Shelley.
15:06Oh, no.
15:08It's chewing up the thread.
15:10Sewing has been something
15:12that's got me through challenging times.
15:14Being a single mum of two,
15:16I was studying, I was working,
15:18I was raising two children,
15:19and then I got to a point
15:21where I just felt like I wasn't where I needed
15:23or wanted to be,
15:24and that's where the dark time came.
15:27Going through that difficult time
15:29and doing a bit of soul searching,
15:30that's when I decided to teach myself how to sew
15:32because I wanted to tell my story through design.
15:35So it would feel amazing to win
15:38and would definitely assure me
15:40that I am on the right path,
15:42and it would just put me one step closer
15:44to achieving my dreams, really.
15:49I love the 60s.
15:50If I could go back to one fashion era,
15:52it would definitely be the 60s.
15:54I love a mini dress,
15:55the bold colours,
15:56the pockets,
15:57the big buttons.
15:59Shelley's drawn on her personal style
16:01for her 60s-inspired mini dress,
16:03which includes complicated design details
16:05and four patch pockets for embellishment.
16:09As a woman,
16:10I love anything that has pockets.
16:11If I have a dress,
16:12I want some pockets.
16:13You know, you can pop the lip gloss in there.
16:15Can't have a dress without pockets.
16:17Yui!
16:18Hi!
16:19How are you, Shelley?
16:20I'm OK.
16:20I'm OK.
16:21I'm trying to remain calm.
16:22Yes, I've got a bit of utility vibes
16:24going on with the pockets.
16:26I want to make it a bit...
16:27I don't think I'll make it more mini than that,
16:28but the mini was inspired by the 60s.
16:31I love the 60s.
16:31I love it.
16:32I can see you in that.
16:33Thank you so much!
16:35What do you think of the silhouette,
16:37the vibe?
16:37I think it's a great one.
16:39I think it's classic.
16:40I mean, I worry about the two top pockets,
16:42how they would affect you
16:43if you didn't want to enhance your breasts more.
16:45OK, gotcha.
16:47That is a good point.
16:49Jade actually made a good point
16:51so definitely taking that ombre.
16:53And I'll leave the top pockets off.
16:55It will save me time anyway,
16:56which I need a lot of right now.
16:59So she done me a favour.
17:01Great colour choice for the season.
17:02Burgundy, always a winner.
17:04But we've got to consider,
17:06because of the breadth of our audience,
17:08that it's just the appropriate length.
17:10So short's good, it's just not too short.
17:12Oh, this pocket has not come out right.
17:16I just went,
17:17Wunky!
17:18And I need to do a bit of unstitching,
17:21which I don't have time to do.
17:25Designers, I've got a statement to make.
17:27You've got one hour left.
17:30Pressure, man.
17:31And she means it.
17:32I've got to get cracking.
17:39This machine's like a Ferrari.
17:41Richie, are you done?
17:42Nah.
17:43Oh.
17:43Nah, mate.
17:44Far from.
17:46I've never designed or made dresses before.
17:48I'm used to menswear.
17:50My parents are of Ghanaian heritage.
17:52I love the free-flowingness and the colours
17:54and the vibe that comes from Africa.
17:56But then I love the structured tailoring from the UK.
18:00I love sharp suits.
18:01I love the way it elevates people
18:03and makes them feel great, you know.
18:05And I'd love to just blend that together.
18:09Richie is combining both parts of his heritage
18:12in his sharply tailored blazer dress
18:14with colourful fabric
18:16and extra-high shoulder pads
18:17from an 80s-inspired power-dressing silhouette.
18:21Yeah, that's it.
18:23For me, all of these designers, including Richie,
18:26it's where are they taking their trend references from?
18:29So it's modern.
18:30I'm not sure if that one's quite on point.
18:34Wall's really forgiving.
18:35That's why I chose to work with it.
18:37Sort of hide your mistakes if you make any.
18:40I'm Bailey, I'm 23, and I'm from Cheshire.
18:43My design style's definitely, like, minimal, black, white, grey.
18:47I just think it's stylish.
18:49It's you always look elevated and effortless.
18:51Like, you can't really go wrong.
18:56I'm going for, like, office siren,
18:58like, very, like, secretary Bond girl.
19:01She's working, but she's going out for drinks after.
19:04And blending a shirt and a skirt together.
19:08Bailey's workwear-inspired shirt dress features a fitted bodice,
19:12pencil skirt and statement collar,
19:14all in his signature colour palette.
19:16Grey. Obviously grey.
19:19It's a beautiful design, but quite formal.
19:22I do like grey.
19:23Yeah.
19:24I would say it's a safe bet.
19:26Look at that. Spot on.
19:28One designer who isn't going to play it safe
19:31is copywriter Daniel.
19:33I do love a ruffle.
19:34Any ruffle, any frill.
19:35I don't think there's any such thing as too many ruffles,
19:37too many bows.
19:38I think it elevates everything.
19:41My design style is maximalist.
19:44Whether that's a frill, a ruffle, a bow, nothing is small.
19:48I mean, I'm not a small human in any way,
19:50so it's not that easy to find clothes that I like
19:52that are in my size.
19:53So I make clothes that make me happier.
19:56My ultimate goal is to have my own label,
19:58make things that flatter people,
20:00regardless of how big or small, tall or short you are.
20:03To get the mentorship with M&S would be incredible.
20:05It would change my life.
20:07Doing OK?
20:08Yeah, I think so.
20:08As you can see, the ruffle on the end of the sleeve.
20:11It's done.
20:12Daniel's dramatic design in orange velvet
20:14includes a square neckline
20:16and oversized ruffles on the sleeves and hem.
20:20Oh, no.
20:21My thread has broken, so now I have to start again.
20:24You kind of have to gather your thread for the ruffles,
20:27and I'd keep on breaking it.
20:28You just kind of have to carry on going
20:30until you get it right.
20:32So Daniel ruffles, quite fancy for day wear.
20:37Yeah, I definitely see it more as an evening dress.
20:39Is it something that you're going to wear a lot of times?
20:42Is it going to get enough?
20:43Probably, probably not.
20:44That versatility is super important
20:46to the customer these days.
20:48OK, let's do this, Daniel.
20:50Oh, you can do this.
20:53Cover your ears, man, then.
20:55Designers, you've got ten minutes left!
20:58Whoa!
20:59I bet you could still hear me.
21:00Oh, yeah, 100%.
21:01Oh, gosh.
21:03Come on, come on, come on.
21:05I've not managed to do one of my patch pockets,
21:08and I don't know if I'll be able to get any buttons
21:11or buttonholes onto my actual dress.
21:14So that's going to go on like that.
21:17Axis was so calm with everything.
21:18Like, I'm just...
21:20Right now, I've resigned myself to the fact
21:21that this will hardly be a dress.
21:23I think it's like, I haven't even sewn for apples,
21:24like, most of my fabric is still unused.
21:29Great.
21:30All right, designers, you've got five minutes.
21:34I'm seeing a lot of naked mannequins.
21:37Remember, gang, if it's not on the mannequin,
21:39it won't be judged.
21:41Who needs help?
21:42Come on!
21:43Er...
21:44I'm really freaking out.
21:47It's not finished, but it's going to be...
21:49You've just got to get it on.
21:50Oh, God, how do you dress a mannequin?
21:53Lift.
21:54Yeah.
21:5760 seconds left!
21:59Just one minute to go.
22:01Treat in case I cut the dresser.
22:02OK, this way.
22:04Oh!
22:05Are you all right?
22:07I've not got buttons or anything on.
22:09And I'm not going to finish.
22:10Ten seconds, everyone.
22:11Let's go.
22:12Come on.
22:13I'm just going to have to pin it
22:14because I have completely run out of time.
22:16Five, four, three, two, one!
22:23Time's up.
22:24Well done, gang.
22:25Oh, my God, we did it.
22:28Mine doesn't finish.
22:28Come here, darling.
22:29Mine doesn't finish.
22:30She's so embarrassed.
22:32No, don't you dare.
22:33You've got this.
22:34Breathe it out.
22:36I'm just disappointed in myself.
22:39Could you get yours for now?
22:41No, definitely not finished.
22:42Half of what I wanted to do.
22:44I'm happy I got in the mannequin.
22:45I think after chatting with the others,
22:47I feel proud that I've finished it.
22:49This is very worrying for me.
22:52That was an experience, let's just say that.
22:57It was tough.
22:58It was challenging.
23:01Nine statement autumn dresses are now ready to be inspected by the experts.
23:06It's time to see which of the designers have hit the brief
23:09and who is at risk of going harm.
23:14What you've managed to achieve in four hours is quite spectacular,
23:18so you should be really proud of yourself.
23:20In terms of seasonality, colour, yes.
23:23The hem sweep in there is a real accomplishment.
23:26It's got the wow factor and I don't want to buy it,
23:29but I would worry a little bit about how it's cut around the back.
23:33I don't think that there's enough coverage
23:35and I'm known for being wild and concerned.
23:39Jude, Jude, wild.
23:42Never.
23:43But I think it's amazing.
23:45Yeah, it's a massive statement dress.
23:47Well done.
23:51Just sad that we haven't seen it finished
23:53and that it's coming across more of a jacket than a dress.
23:57Dress was in the brief.
23:59You didn't manage to achieve that.
24:01I know the fabric's really challenging,
24:02but that was something to really consider
24:04and that it was going to be a challenge.
24:06While Shelley had a dressing down for her unfinished garment,
24:10the experts are clear on what they're looking for
24:12in an autumn statement dress.
24:16They expect something fashion-forward.
24:19You are a very experienced seamstress.
24:22The thing that's lacking for me is its fashionability.
24:26They want a garment that shows off the designer's individual style.
24:30It's a little bit uniform-like,
24:34perhaps not so much flair as I would like to have seen.
24:37They need it to hit the autumnal brief.
24:40It's definitely a statement dress, but from a colour choice,
24:43it's not commercially viable in an autumn-winter season.
24:46The design must appeal to real women customers.
24:50Office wear for women's changed so much in the last decade.
24:53It's more relaxed,
24:54and so I'm just finding it a little bit difficult
24:56to place who would wear it.
24:58And offer them bang for their buck.
25:00I wouldn't necessarily say that it was that versatile.
25:04It's more a one-off evening type thing.
25:06And unfortunately, it's not finished as well.
25:09With all that in mind,
25:11Will Casey and Laura have hit the brief.
25:15You've done a great job.
25:16It's a versatile dress.
25:19Crossover's always really flattering.
25:21That print, it feels like an autumn floral.
25:24That's incredibly commercial.
25:25It's a really great achievement.
25:28Well done, Laura. Excellent stuff.
25:30Bravo.
25:32Casey, I can see you.
25:34Come on up.
25:38You've been the worst to last.
25:41It was an ambitious kind of design at the outset
25:44to do in four weeks, I don't know in four hours.
25:47But what I do love is there's a contemporaneous about it,
25:51and all of the pin-tacking is really, really impressive.
25:56Well done, Casey.
25:56I was so surprised.
25:58Genuinely, I thank you so much.
25:59Well done.
26:00Well done.
26:04Jade and Maddie have now ranked the dresses from last place
26:08to the winner of the first statement piece challenge.
26:12In reverse order,
26:15the designer in last place is...
26:16Shelly.
26:19Being overly ambitious sometimes can come back to bite you,
26:22and I guess that it got the better of me today.
26:26In eighth place is...
26:28Daniel.
26:30I was either going to sink or swim,
26:31and today I sank maybe in the collection challenge to come out of swim.
26:34Joseph is seventh.
26:35Joseph is seventh.
26:36Joseph is seventh.
26:36Sixth is Richie.
26:38Bailey is fifth.
26:40And Julia is fourth.
26:42So that leaves our top three designers.
26:45In third place is...
26:48Casey.
26:49She's dog-smacked.
26:53Well done.
26:55Your vision was there,
26:57and the complexity, particularly in the bodice,
27:00was outstanding, so well done.
27:02Thank you so much.
27:04You're first now.
27:05You had tears earlier on.
27:06I'm so sorry.
27:07You didn't want to go off and pop a cock.
27:09Well done.
27:09In second place is...
27:12Laura.
27:15Well done, Laura.
27:16Well done, Laura.
27:21Ticks all the commercial boxes.
27:23You answered the brief really well.
27:25Well done.
27:27So that means that in first place is Alex.
27:30Woo!
27:35Well done, Alex.
27:37What you accomplished was spectacular.
27:41It was incredibly complex,
27:43and absolutely answers the brief
27:44from an awesome statement dress design.
27:47Aw.
27:47I can see you get a little emotional.
27:50Fabulous.
27:51Very good.
27:52Yeah, I'm a little bit emotional.
27:55I think just hearing that people appreciate the work you do,
28:01it's all you want, isn't it?
28:03Coming up on Dress the Nation.
28:05We're looking for you to create a carry-on capsule collection.
28:10The M&S customers have their say.
28:13It looks a bit...
28:15a bit plain.
28:16Welcome back to Dress the Nation,
28:28where the top three designers have been given the role of team leaders
28:32for the group challenge.
28:34I'm going to go for Richie.
28:36Joining Alex are Richie and Joseph,
28:39with Laura are Shelley and Julia,
28:41and on Casey's team,
28:43Daniel and Bailey.
28:45So, Jade,
28:47what is their collection challenge?
28:49We're looking for you to create
28:51a carry-on capsule collection
28:53that can be mixed and matched
28:55for a weekend away.
28:57This is all about
28:58how can you get as many outfits as possible
29:00so you get your biggest bang for your buck.
29:02You will be provided with two items
29:05that will form the basis of that collection.
29:07And what are these items?
29:09I hear you cry.
29:10We have a very simple plain white T-shirt
29:14and pair of jeans.
29:15You've got five hours.
29:17So, whatever you do,
29:18remember to keep calm
29:20and carry on.
29:22Carry on.
29:24Carry on.
29:24Your time starts now.
29:28The teams will need to impress
29:29both the experts
29:30and real-life M&S customers
29:32with their holiday-themed collections,
29:34and the winning team
29:36will fly straight through to next week.
29:39So, lead designer,
29:40where are we going?
29:41That is the question.
29:42I feel like Paris is calling.
29:43Barcelona?
29:44Yes.
29:45I love a little Barcelona City Break.
29:47I think City Break
29:48could be anywhere.
29:50Yeah.
29:51So,
29:52it's the carry-on capsule collection.
29:54Easy for me to say.
29:56So, what are you expecting to see?
29:58They need to get as many outfits
30:00out of those pieces as possible
30:02so they can dress it up,
30:03they can dress it down.
30:04So, there's a lot of choices
30:05in their suitcase.
30:07If we can try and figure something out,
30:08we'll pull everything together.
30:09Yeah.
30:09I quite like your ruffles.
30:11You love your ruffles.
30:12Yeah, I really like your ruffles,
30:13and I think, yeah,
30:14we all have, like, a little hint of it.
30:16I don't quite like a classic leopard friend.
30:19Despite Daniel's problems
30:20with ruffles in the first challenge,
30:22Team Casey are using them again
30:24alongside bold leopard print
30:26to bring their jacket,
30:28slip dress,
30:29and mini skirt together.
30:32Right, where's the skirt block?
30:35Looking at the M&S buyer,
30:37I'm thinking, like,
30:38a trench coat.
30:40I'm thinking, like,
30:40a silky shirt.
30:41Like a classic trouser.
30:42Like a wide leg.
30:43Like a wide leg.
30:43Yeah, yeah.
30:44And I think what's good
30:44is we can pair the shirt
30:45and then you've got
30:46the widely trouser with a T-shirt
30:48with a coat as well.
30:49Yeah, yeah.
30:49So then there's already
30:50three outfits there
30:51for one weekend.
30:53Team Alex's
30:54Parisian-inspired collection
30:55includes a leather trench
30:57with sternum lapel,
30:58wide leg cords
30:59with oversized turnips,
31:01and a gold lame shirt
31:03with decorative yoke detail.
31:06Put it together.
31:07This is bad.
31:08That is really nice.
31:10That's classic.
31:11Yeah.
31:11Because this combination
31:12is gorgeous.
31:14But not all the teams
31:16are finding fabric choices
31:17so easy.
31:18What do you think
31:19about this one?
31:20Nah.
31:20You don't like that?
31:21Mm-mm.
31:22I don't like that.
31:23Well, we need something.
31:24I kind of want to be happy
31:26with the fabric
31:26that we'll be using.
31:27Well, we'll all have to be happy.
31:29It's a good challenge.
31:30We'll all have to be happy.
31:32Laura's team may have struggled
31:34to agree on fabrics,
31:36but they've decided
31:36to keep their Barcelona
31:38collection simple
31:39with a plain white skirt
31:41unembellished red shirt
31:42and leopard print slip dress.
31:45So, there's only one thing left
31:47to choose who is making what.
31:50So, I'm going to do the dress.
31:53Julia, shirt.
31:54Shirt.
31:55Shelly, denim skirt.
31:56I'm in a dilemma here.
31:58Why?
31:59I'm thinking,
31:59do I have too much
32:00of a simple piece?
32:01I don't want to play it too safe
32:03because too safe
32:04is a bad thing.
32:05I came ninth
32:06in the statement challenge
32:08and I want to be able
32:09to show that I can design
32:10something nice.
32:12I need to prove myself now.
32:14I know if I don't do well,
32:16it's very likely
32:16that I'll be the one
32:17heading home today.
32:19I just don't want to seem
32:19like I'm taking the easy road out
32:21because I'm last.
32:22Do you know what I mean?
32:23Mine's simple as well.
32:24Mine's basically
32:25just a couple of seams.
32:26All right.
32:27As long as you guys are happy.
32:29Being a teacher,
32:30I'm quite a team leader
32:31there anyways.
32:33Then somebody does
32:33have to take the reins.
32:37Disappointing,
32:37but I just got to go with it.
32:39I want to respect
32:40the leader's decisions.
32:45So Laura's team,
32:46they've given Shelley
32:49a white denim skirt to make.
32:51I don't think she was
32:52that happy about it.
32:54I think it's quite plain.
32:55Oh no.
32:56It's really big.
32:58So there's been
32:59a little bit of tension there.
33:00I am going to do
33:02my best in this competition
33:04and give it everything
33:05that I have.
33:06I'm not going to go down
33:07without a fight.
33:09Oh Lord.
33:11Now it's too small.
33:15Designers,
33:16you are halfway
33:17through the challenge.
33:19Oh God.
33:20Come on.
33:20While Shelley's struggling
33:21with the fit on her
33:22simple denim skirt
33:24across the room.
33:26We've got two legs.
33:27We've got two legs.
33:28These are the wide leg
33:29trousers as they
33:30kind of stand right now.
33:32Team Alex are flying ahead
33:34with their holiday collection
33:35despite their complex designs.
33:38I feel like we've got this.
33:39Got it at the bike.
33:41Little team here, isn't it?
33:42We are a team.
33:45Team leader Alex, hi.
33:46Hi, how are you doing?
33:47Talk to us
33:47through your design.
33:48We're trying to make pieces
33:49that appeal to the customer
33:51but fashion forward.
33:53Oh Maddie's
33:54absolutely loving that.
33:55I can feel the claw
33:57oozing out from you.
33:59You're saying all the right things.
34:02You all right with the fly, Joseph?
34:04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
34:05Alex's team looks like
34:06the hero and engaged.
34:08Yeah, yeah.
34:09It's coming together.
34:10It looks great.
34:10Feels like there's a good
34:11vibe going on.
34:12It does, doesn't it?
34:13Yeah.
34:13Smashing it, guys.
34:14Katie, how are we doing?
34:16Yeah, fine.
34:16I'm almost finished.
34:17The sleeves completely.
34:19Love.
34:20Yeah.
34:20You look actually obsessed.
34:21Having come eighth
34:22in the first challenge,
34:24Daniel's hoping
34:24to wipe the slate clean
34:26with another ruffle dress
34:28but the pressure
34:29is getting to him.
34:32Daniel, how are you, girl?
34:33You're awfully quiet.
34:34Yeah, are you okay?
34:35Yeah.
34:36I do my sewing in silence
34:37like my sadness.
34:38Love.
34:40Sorry, I'm having
34:41a bit of a wobble.
34:42No, you're not.
34:43Not at all.
34:44This guy's incredible
34:45with what they do
34:46but they've both been
34:46to fashion school.
34:47I'm a home sewer.
34:48I don't do things
34:49as quickly as they do.
34:51That could just be
34:52fine by itself, couldn't it?
34:55Me and Bailey,
34:56our backgrounds,
34:56they're quite similar.
34:58I think Daniel's
34:59just a bit out
35:00of his comfort zone.
35:01If you need anything,
35:02just shout.
35:03Hello, team Casey.
35:05Colors, what are we saying?
35:07So we went for
35:07a bit of leopard print.
35:09So you're wearing leopard?
35:10Yeah.
35:11You're wearing leopard.
35:12You're wearing leopard.
35:13It's turned into a zoo.
35:16What's your design
35:20inspiration?
35:21Catch later.
35:23You ain't my mother!
35:24Yes, I ain't!
35:29Bailey, what do you think
35:30of this?
35:31Oh, my God.
35:32I love.
35:32It looks like
35:33it's going to be interesting.
35:34It's amazing how much
35:35leopard print we've got.
35:36There's a lot of leopard.
35:38A little bit limiting
35:39animal on animal.
35:40You wouldn't want
35:41to be getting up
35:42and wearing the same
35:42kind of look every day.
35:44What am I doing?
35:45I don't know.
35:46The only thing
35:47I would observe
35:48is Daniel.
35:49You can do this.
35:51You can do this.
35:52He's really struggling.
35:54I'm just really struggling
35:54together with this.
35:55I don't know why.
35:56Daniel, don't stress.
35:57I feel like the more
35:57you stress, the more
35:58you'll, like, mess up.
35:59I just hope it means
36:00they're able to achieve
36:02what they designed
36:03at the outset.
36:05Oh, God.
36:06That is literally
36:07the worst hem
36:08I've ever sewn.
36:09Look at that.
36:10Sorry, I feel like
36:11I'm the weak link.
36:12It's one of those things
36:12with teamwork.
36:13You never want to
36:14let people down
36:15if you possibly can.
36:16But I feel like
36:17I might.
36:19I'm just having
36:20the worst day.
36:21Welcome back to
36:32Dress the Nation,
36:33where Daniel's ruffled
36:34dress is slipping him up.
36:36What's going on here?
36:38I don't know.
36:38For the second
36:39challenge running.
36:40I think just freestyle
36:41it.
36:42If you feel confident
36:42to do that.
36:43I do not.
36:43I do not.
36:44I can help.
36:45Just go and cut me
36:46loads of massive straps.
36:47Loads of the brown?
36:48Yeah.
36:48Come on, Daniel.
36:49We've got this.
36:49Thank you so much.
36:50No, it's all right, girl.
36:51I've got you.
36:51I'm just so slow.
36:54I think she's going
36:54to look really chic.
36:56Please take a moment,
37:00everybody,
37:01to locate your nearest exit.
37:03They can't exit.
37:04They've got 15 minutes left.
37:06Oh.
37:07Still time for duty free.
37:13Yeah.
37:14Easy, isn't it?
37:15Don't say that.
37:16Don't jinx it.
37:17No.
37:18We've got this in the bag.
37:20One last pocket
37:21and it's finished.
37:22We're going to have a cuppa.
37:23In fact,
37:24we're going to have
37:24a cup of peppermint tea.
37:26While Julia's
37:28feeling confident,
37:30teammate Shelly,
37:31who came last
37:31in the first challenge,
37:33is still struggling
37:34with the fit
37:35of her denim skirt,
37:36despite its simple design.
37:40Oh, gosh.
37:41It shouldn't be so hard
37:42to have to pull over the bum.
37:45I am panicking a bit.
37:47Right.
37:48After several attempts
37:50at sizing,
37:51she's running out of time
37:52to add any
37:53much-needed embellishments.
37:55No, no, no.
37:56No, no, no.
37:58If you need any help,
38:00we can do it.
38:01What do you think of Shelly?
38:03Well, the design.
38:04It's a bit plain.
38:07Definitely not that difficult
38:08to have accessorised it.
38:09No.
38:10No, added a little bit more
38:12personality
38:13to show her design skills as well.
38:16She's got an awful lot to prove.
38:18Over in Team Alex,
38:21they're going the extra mile
38:23with some last-minute
38:24holiday accessories.
38:26A beret always elevates
38:27out that I always feel.
38:28And especially if this
38:29M&S customer is
38:30on a trip to Paris,
38:32why would you not wear a beret?
38:33Let's see.
38:36Moment of truth.
38:38Laura.
38:40Yeah.
38:40I think we've got them.
38:41Oh, yeah.
38:42That's amazing.
38:42Yeah.
38:43Finally.
38:44Brilliant.
38:45Designers,
38:46you just have five minutes left.
38:48Only five minutes
38:49to dress your mannequins
38:51and get ready.
38:52Oh, God.
38:53I swear the 15 minutes
38:54was about two seconds ago.
38:55I'm ready for your ruffles
38:56whenever you are.
38:57I'm struggling
38:58to gather it.
39:00Great.
39:01Done.
39:01Beautiful.
39:02Très chic.
39:08Right, as soon
39:09as I chuck this to you guys,
39:10you're just going to
39:11have to whack it on.
39:11Yeah.
39:19Right, here you go.
39:20Ten.
39:21Nine.
39:22Eight.
39:23Seven.
39:23Six.
39:25Five.
39:25Four.
39:26Three.
39:27Two.
39:28One.
39:29Yes.
39:30Designers.
39:31Time is up.
39:33Step away from your mannequin.
39:35Oh, OK, OK.
39:36Well, it's what it is.
39:37It happened.
39:39Can't take it back now.
39:40Can't get any extra time.
39:41But me being slower
39:42wasn't necessarily helpful for them.
39:44I hope it can't get any worse
39:46than the first one.
39:47I did feel like
39:48I may have been playing it safe
39:50doing the skirt,
39:51but I stand by what I did.
39:55Three carry-on capsule collections
39:57are ready for judging,
39:59but it isn't just the experts
40:01who will be critiquing them.
40:03Oh, here we go.
40:04God, there's a lot of them, isn't there?
40:05Yeah.
40:06Yeah.
40:06There is.
40:07We've invited real-life M&S customers
40:10to give their opinion
40:11on which clubs
40:12would have them
40:13parting with their cash.
40:15We take all of our customer feedback
40:17really, really seriously.
40:20The moment of truth.
40:21They're ready to read these outfits
40:22big time.
40:25As soon as I saw this instantly,
40:27I was like,
40:27this is a bit of me.
40:28I love the baggy trousers
40:30and I love this jacket.
40:32It speaks elegant,
40:34classy.
40:35You were to ask me to pick,
40:36I wouldn't know
40:37because I'll take them both.
40:39You can have them, babes.
40:40Yeah.
40:40I think they all would work together.
40:43It can interchange the items.
40:44The shirt works with the jeans,
40:45it works with the cords.
40:47The gold metallic shirt
40:48is a standout success.
40:51They've really landed that brilliantly.
40:52I would definitely buy that coat
40:54and the hat.
40:55Yay!
40:58I mean,
40:59considering that
41:00these are made
41:01for going on a vacation,
41:02it looks a bit,
41:04a bit plain.
41:06Maybe, like,
41:07it could have
41:07come with more design
41:09on the skirt, maybe,
41:11or on the shirt.
41:12I would not be
41:13personally wearing this
41:13if I'm completely honest.
41:15I think they fell into
41:16doing basics
41:17rather than something
41:18more glamorous.
41:19Yeah.
41:19They should have just
41:20pushed themselves
41:21a little bit further.
41:23Don't feel like
41:24there's a lot
41:24you can do with it.
41:25All I can see, really,
41:26is having the shirt
41:27over the dress.
41:28I think we've hit
41:29the brief with Emma's,
41:30even if they didn't like it.
41:33So this is my favourite collection
41:35out of the three of them,
41:36and I really like
41:36the nicer,
41:37more subtle version
41:38of Leopard
41:38than you often see.
41:40The dress, I think,
41:41is not very versatile.
41:43Fair.
41:45I agree with that.
41:46This is too much leopard print.
41:47One leopard print item
41:49would be fine
41:49in a capsule collection.
41:51Three items
41:52in leopard print
41:52just wouldn't work.
41:53If you're not into animal,
41:55it really does not
41:56give you much choice at all.
41:57It's not what I would
41:58imagine from Emma Nurse.
42:00No.
42:02After hearing
42:02the customer's opinions,
42:04the experts now
42:05have to decide
42:05who is still
42:06in the running
42:07for the mentorship
42:08of a lifetime
42:09and who will be going home.
42:13Wow, interesting stuff.
42:14Interesting.
42:15They came up with
42:16three different collections.
42:18They did.
42:18Alex's team,
42:20for me, stood out.
42:22There was definitely
42:22thought around that fit building,
42:24how you could wear them differently.
42:25The way they dressed it,
42:27it really did look rail ready.
42:28Yeah.
42:28And I loved,
42:29there was clearly
42:30a kind of day-to-night theme
42:31in there as well,
42:32with the lame blaze.
42:32Yeah.
42:33Let's talk about Team Kersie.
42:34A little bit limiting,
42:36I think,
42:36from a wardrobe away.
42:38I mean, I do like
42:39a sort of animal,
42:40like a matching set,
42:41but after that,
42:42I'd like to see something else.
42:44It really was like a zoo.
42:47Let's talk about Laura's team.
42:49It felt quite basic.
42:51I was confused
42:51by the sort of basics
42:52with more basics,
42:53because I think the thing is
42:55when you're packing
42:55for a time away,
42:57you do want to have something
42:58that stands out for you.
42:59All right, gang,
43:00let's talk about
43:01who we think is in danger
43:02of leaving.
43:03Shelley had to come out
43:05and really prove herself,
43:07and I didn't get that
43:07from the white basic skirt.
43:10It just needed
43:10some design to it.
43:12Disappointing.
43:12Yeah, agree.
43:13Daniel was second
43:15to bottom last time.
43:16The dress wasn't finished,
43:17and he clearly tried
43:19to prove himself
43:19in this one,
43:21but he didn't quite land it.
43:22The ruffles were
43:23a little bit overwhelming,
43:24and what could be
43:25like a nice little dress for me,
43:27I would be immediately
43:28put off by that.
43:29And the only other person
43:30was Julia.
43:31The shirt,
43:32it's technically
43:33been delivered brilliantly,
43:35but it's lacking
43:35in design flair.
43:36So we didn't see that
43:37in the first one,
43:38and we've not seen it
43:39in the second one.
43:40Oh, my gosh.
43:41It sounds like you
43:42have got a tough decision
43:43to make.
43:44Good luck.
43:47Designers, well done.
43:49You've made it through
43:50week one.
43:51Almost.
43:53The team with the
43:54must-have collection
43:55and safely through
43:56to next week is...
43:58Alex's team!
44:01Alex's team!
44:01Well done, Alex.
44:04Come on.
44:04Charles and Richie,
44:06well done,
44:07all three of you.
44:08The combination of the colours,
44:10of the fabrications,
44:11they're quite special,
44:12but very considered.
44:14There was definitely
44:14an immediate customer draw
44:16walking over to your area.
44:17Worthy winners.
44:18I'm so happy.
44:20Yeah.
44:20Really proud of my team.
44:23The capabilities of
44:24Richie and Joseph
44:24as team players
44:26was outstanding to me.
44:28Like, I'm not going to
44:29take this for granted.
44:30I'm going to keep pushing.
44:32But, yeah,
44:33it's going incredibly well
44:35so far.
44:36Now, we're just getting
44:37used to you all,
44:38which makes this next bit
44:40really, really difficult.
44:42Unfortunately,
44:43one of you from
44:44the losing teams
44:44will be heading home.
44:46Our experts said
44:49there's no doubt
44:50this designer
44:51has bold,
44:52creative ideas.
44:54But this week,
44:55unfortunately,
44:56their vision
44:56didn't quite come together.
44:59So the designer
45:01leaving the competition
45:02is...
45:05Shelley.
45:12I knew it was going to be me.
45:13Sorry, Shelley.
45:15I'm a bit sad.
45:16Well, a lot sad.
45:18But somebody's always
45:19got to be the first to go.
45:20Thank you, guys.
45:22I probably should have
45:23argued my case more
45:25for what I wanted
45:27in a skirt.
45:28But I've learned
45:28to be courageous,
45:31be bold,
45:32take more risks
45:33and chances.
45:34Don't give up
45:35on your dreams, OK?
45:36You've got more potential.
45:38This, for me,
45:39is just the beginning.
45:40Even if it doesn't end
45:41how you want it to sometimes,
45:43it shouldn't stop you
45:44from trying.
45:45Next time on
45:46Dress the Nation.
45:47I love leopard print.
45:49This is challenging.
45:52No one else is having that.
45:54That's ours.
45:55Doubting everything.
45:57I'm stressed.
45:58Ah!
45:58I've tried to go as
46:00aminous as I possibly can.
46:02It doesn't feel
46:02the most modern.
46:04Please say you love
46:04the jacket, please.
46:06Now that it's all finished,
46:08I think it looks
46:08so expensive.
46:09Olivia will be hoping
46:14to change the ways
46:15of eight unsuspected guys
46:17in brand new
46:17Olivia Atwood's
