00:00Once again, the hunt is on for Britain's next big name in fashion.
00:06Nine more outstanding amateur designers from around the nation will compete
00:10for a chance to work with a true British icon, Marks & Spencer.
00:15As a stalwart of the British high street for over 140 years,
00:20this time Marks & Spencer is on a mission to nurture raw talent
00:23and help one individual extend their own brand.
00:27Last year we had a fantastic set of designers,
00:30but I've got a really good feeling that this year is going to be even better.
00:33So I'm really confident over the next few weeks we're going to find a real superstar.
00:38Over the next five weeks, our nine designers will work both individually...
00:42Really freaking out.
00:44...and in teams.
00:44The lead designer, what are you thinking?
00:46You don't like that?
00:48Sexy, would you wear that?
00:49Done right.
00:50As they bid to impress the guest experts...
00:53I look at that and I just would like to try it on.
00:55I think it looks so expensive.
00:57Did we turn an M&S expert?
00:59I think it's a really bold and daring design.
01:03Definitely you can see it in our stores.
01:05And of course some real-life M&S customers.
01:08Looks a bit plain.
01:10Whatever.
01:10Only one can win this life-changing opportunity.
01:13A chance to work alongside Marks & Spencer.
01:15There is so much talent up and down the country.
01:19So I'm hoping we really find some untapped talents that we can nurture and can go out into the fashion industry and really establish themselves.
01:27I'm a genius.
01:28Who will have their winning designs sold in stores around the country?
01:32You've got two minutes to go!
01:34The clock's a broken, this guy.
01:35I swear I am.
01:36I'm just disappointed in myself.
01:37And who will quite literally be given the task to dress the nation?
01:43That's fashion.
01:44Come on in, designers.
01:52Welcome to dress the nation.
01:55And the crowd go wild!
01:58That's right.
01:59Just like shoulder pads and leopard print, we are back.
02:03So excited.
02:04I can't believe I'm actually here and I've been chosen.
02:07It's a dream come true.
02:08There are a bit of nerves, but I know the minute I get in that room, I'm going to kill it.
02:12Once again, the search is on to find Britain's brightest fashion design, rising star.
02:19In five weeks, one of you will win this huge prize, an ongoing mentorship.
02:25With Marks and Spencers, it really is the prize that money can not buy.
02:30I'm really excited about the idea of working with people from M&S and to get their opinions and advice.
02:35I think it would all be so valuable for me at this point in my career.
02:38That's right.
02:39You'll be given exclusive access to the industry-leading design, marketing and merchandising teams,
02:46all with the aim of helping you kickstart your dream career.
02:52I'm self-taught, so there's a lot about fashion and the industry that I have no clue about.
02:58It would put me one step closer to achieving my dreams.
03:01Not only that, but at least one of your winning designs will be sold in M&S.
03:08Such a good prize.
03:10Now, like every good shopper knows, there's only one place to start, and that's women's wear.
03:15So, let's start by introducing someone who's very familiar with the position you're all in.
03:19Straight out of college, she worked her way up from an admin assistant
03:22and is now director of women's wear for Marks and Spencers.
03:25Maddie Evans, everyone.
03:26So, good to see you.
03:28Good to see you, too.
03:29Can't wait to see what you've got in store for us.
03:32Our guest expert is a woman whose name is synonymous with style.
03:37Please welcome Jade Jagger.
03:40As a designer, It's Girl, Vogue cover star and member of Rock and Roll royalty,
03:48Jade is a verified fashion superstar.
03:50So lovely. Welcome, Jade.
03:56Thank you. Hi, everybody.
03:58Hello.
04:00Please, can you tell our designers what they will be creating
04:03for their first Women's Wear Statement Piece Challenge?
04:07We're looking for you to design and create a dress for autumn,
04:11something that's versatile enough to go to lunch with your friends or go to work in.
04:15It is a statement piece.
04:17It is about expressing your own personal style.
04:19So we do expect that kind of flair to come through.
04:23But it is also about commercial viability.
04:26You have four hours.
04:28Good luck to you all.
04:30Your time starts now.
04:33The designers have just four hours to create an autumn dress
04:36that makes a statement about their personal design style
04:39in a commercial and fashion-forward garment.
04:43Right.
04:45Got my toolbox.
04:45The experts will then judge their finished garments
04:49and rank them from ninth to first place.
04:53I think the nerves are set in now.
04:55It's like, it's real.
04:57So, the statement piece challenge.
05:00My dear, why an autumn dress?
05:02Yeah, not an easy one, actually.
05:04But dresses are really important to our customer in autumn,
05:07so much so we sell almost quarter of a million.
05:09Jed, what does an autumn dress look like for you?
05:12It's about the fabric, so something that's a little bit thicker,
05:16like denim or a lighter wool.
05:19There's so much fabric.
05:20There is.
05:21There's too much choice.
05:23I'll take the Aladdin's cave.
05:24Oh, I'm just going to take two, just in case.
05:27What colours are you looking for?
05:29Neutrals are a big trend at the moment.
05:31Avoid bright.
05:32Guys, I've done it.
05:32I think I've found the one.
05:33And go for something much, much richer.
05:36Yeah, that looks about right.
05:38But also, they've got to have in their heads
05:40the commercial side.
05:42Versatility and breadth of appeal are absolutely critical.
05:46A tough task ahead.
05:47Really tough.
05:53With 40 years' experience working as a seamstress,
05:56Julia's hoping to measure up to the challenge.
06:00My mannequins at home have got names,
06:02so I've got a size 12 who's Betty
06:03and I've got a size 18 who's Beryl.
06:05And I talk to them.
06:09I've always said I could probably sew with my eyes closed.
06:12In fact, I had a detached retina a couple of years ago
06:16and I had to sew with only, like, one eye.
06:19I've always had an urge to, like, produce my own clothing line
06:22but never had the opportunity because I've always had to earn a living.
06:28Sadly, I lost my partner of 25 years, nearly four years ago.
06:32I nursed them through cancer.
06:34That's what makes me feel now this is my time.
06:38I'm 60-year-old and I've got one road ahead of me
06:41and I'm taking that road.
06:43Hi, Julia.
06:48Hiya.
06:49Sorry to disturb you.
06:50Tell us a little bit about your design.
06:52I've worked a lot with brides and I find a lot of, like,
06:54the mothers kind of find a dress that's quite suitable for them.
06:58Right.
06:58So I'm often asked to add extra panels,
07:01add sleeves to dresses.
07:02So slightly more modest.
07:04Yes.
07:04Have you ever done a wedding dress with pockets?
07:06I've altered plenty with...
07:07Yeah, it's quite the trend now.
07:09Lipstick and a phone.
07:10But on my dress...
07:11Form?
07:12He doesn't want a wedding!
07:13Get me out!
07:14Cordran, I need to go!
07:16He's not who I thought he was!
07:20Julia's more conservative design includes long sleeves,
07:23an optional modesty panel at the chest
07:25and ruched waist detailing to adjust the fit.
07:27That's the front.
07:30This is the side.
07:32And you'll pull them that way.
07:33It is a pretty complex garment she's designing and making.
07:38And quite an elegant colour.
07:40Yeah, yeah.
07:41Julia, how many dresses do you think you've ever made in your life?
07:43When I used to produce them,
07:45I could make three dresses in two hours.
07:48Three dresses...
07:49Do you know how many I've made?
07:50How many?
07:51This is the first one.
07:52Is it?
07:55I'm Joseph, I'm 24 and I'm from the New Forest.
07:57This is my favourite piece I've ever made.
08:00A hat.
08:02I can't get enough of colour.
08:04The world is drab enough as it is.
08:06And especially moving to London,
08:07when I'm on the underground
08:08and I see everyone in their suits grey, blue, black.
08:11Come on, have a bit of colour in your life.
08:14I wanted to go for a fabric that represented me.
08:17So I've gone for something very kind of primary colour, very fun.
08:21Joseph's first ever dress showcases his love of bright colours
08:25with bold red, yellow and blue stripes.
08:29But will the colourful design hit the autumnal brief?
08:34Ooh, it's a bit aggressive, isn't it?
08:37So, Joseph and his Technicolor dream coat.
08:40I know.
08:41Is it something you would wear?
08:43I mean, I actually love the colours of it.
08:45Yeah.
08:45But I think it's difficult for autumn.
08:48Oh, I'm a genius.
08:50Mm-hmm.
08:51For sales assistant Alex,
08:52an autumnal colour palette is key to her statement dress design.
08:57When I think of autumn,
08:58one of my favourite colours is, like, burgundy.
09:00It's really rich and, like,
09:01makes you want to have, like, a mulled wine
09:03as you think towards Christmas.
09:04Being in this competition is really surreal,
09:09but I feel calm right now.
09:11I think it's the athlete mentality within me.
09:14From the age of 13 to 18,
09:16I trained and raced on the velodrome
09:19as a track cyclist,
09:20sprinter alongside British cycling.
09:22I was aiming for the Olympics,
09:24but just missed out.
09:26It's crazy how your career can be decided
09:28on 0.3 seconds.
09:30I've since sold my bike
09:33and said goodbye to that chapter of my life.
09:35I really wanted to be more creative.
09:38Winning this and getting a mentorship
09:39could change the trajectory of my whole career.
09:44Hello!
09:45Hi!
09:46You're more Derbyshire girly.
09:47I am, yeah.
09:48Big history of fashion in Derbyshire, isn't there?
09:51Vivian Westwood was born there?
09:52Vivian, right round the corner from me, actually.
09:54Is this what your look is inspired by today?
09:56This is, like, something that Vivian Westwood would do, no?
09:59I looked a lot at the round where I've come from.
10:01Everything's rounded and soft and fluid.
10:03So I thought, combine all that
10:05and, you know, make something commercial.
10:08Alex is hoping her Derbyshire-inspired check dress
10:11will win over the judges.
10:13But will the backless design be too risque
10:16for the average M&S customer?
10:18Very sexy. Would you wear that?
10:20Damn right.
10:21How do you feel about the neck?
10:23The halter neck top.
10:24Why not?
10:25Not too showy?
10:26I'm here for it.
10:27Yeah?
10:27Best of luck.
10:28Thank you so much.
10:29Ciao, ciao.
10:29See you later.
10:31Right, let's get this done.
10:34What's your thoughts on Alex's dress?
10:35It's a lovely shape and design.
10:38The nod to Vivian is always something that we love.
10:42Always relevant.
10:43Always relevant for us.
10:44Forever.
10:44But I think that showing my shoulder can be too sexy.
10:48Has she thought about the practicality?
10:50You know, it's autumn, winter.
10:51You know, is that going to feel appropriate?
10:53There's certain aspects I'm aware of that might be a bit risky, but I'm going to stick to
11:00my guns and I really hope that they like it.
11:04Great.
11:05Right.
11:06Next one.
11:08Designers, you are halfway through the challenge.
11:11Yay!
11:12Oh, my God.
11:13I feel like the time is absolutely flying by now.
11:16I do as well.
11:18Try not to cut my tie off.
11:19Do you know what, right now?
11:22Something tells me that you know a thing or two about the autumn dress.
11:25I can understand why you think that, AJ, but I think we should leave it to our experts.
11:32Definitely a good challenge to start with.
11:34Dresses are my thing.
11:36I love wearing dresses.
11:38I love making dresses.
11:40I am an engineering teacher in a secondary school.
11:43It can be hard work sometimes, but it's really rewarding.
11:47As much as I love teaching, fashion is where I'd love to be.
11:53I wouldn't say I'll use engineering in dresses, but it's definitely very similar processes,
11:59following steps and constructing things and thinking about how pattern pieces are going
12:05to go together.
12:06Actually, yeah, I suppose I do use engineering.
12:10Laura's putting her engineering knowledge to use with her 70s-inspired autumn dress,
12:15which is a technical spiral pattern.
12:18So I'm going to start gathering the ruffle and putting the ruffle into place.
12:23From a commercial perspective, she's the only floral print in the room.
12:27It seems one of the most commercial.
12:29Yeah, 100%.
12:30And brilliantly constructed ruffles down the front.
12:33Yep.
12:33Another designer who's pinning her hopes on her complex design details is Dundee retail assistant,
12:40Casey.
12:41My dress is all, like, pleated, so it's, like, very, like, drapey, so, like...
12:46I'm excited, I'm excited to see her.
12:48In Dundee and in Scotland, probably, in general, there's not many fashion design opportunities.
12:56My dream would be to work my way up through the fashion industry, so I think this competition's
13:02an amazing opportunity for me.
13:03It's an amazing opportunity for me.
13:04My dress is all about empowering women and shaping and flattering the women's form, so
13:09I'm going to be using pleats to tailor in my short dress and create a nice silhouette
13:13as well.
13:14Just, like, go big or go home.
13:16Casey's pleated two-piece dress can be detached into a top and skirt, making it more versatile
13:22for the customer.
13:23But with so many hand-stitched pleats to completing the time...
13:27I just need to see how much I still need to take it in.
13:30...she'll need to work fast to make sure she has something on the mannequin.
13:34Oh, God, I don't think I'm going to be finished.
13:37Just do what you can.
13:38Just do what you can at this point.
13:41It is quite clever in that she's done a two-in-one.
13:44You know, customers really respond to that versatility, but it's a lot more work.
13:50Quite a complex design.
13:51I don't know if you've seen some of the pin tucking.
13:53It's fast.
13:54Yeah.
13:55Why is it not cutting?
13:56It's so annoying.
13:57So, I think she probably feels the time pressure.
13:59Why did I do this?
14:01Why did I decide to make it so complicated?
14:04I'm not going to finish.
14:06I'm really freaking out.
14:09Really, really freaking out.
14:12I'm literally shaking.
14:22Our nine amateur designers are well over halfway through their first statement piece
14:27challenge.
14:28Oh, come on, girl.
14:29Creating a statement autumn dress that combines their personal style with commercial appeal.
14:34Oh, my God. I just sewed my hem the wrong way.
14:38But for 23-year-old Casey, her design isn't going to plan.
14:43It looks good.
14:44It does.
14:45It doesn't.
14:46It doesn't.
14:47It does.
14:48It's the worst thing I've ever made in my life.
14:50No.
14:51It's just an awful look.
14:53I've really tried to do too much in the time and it just isn't paying off.
14:59Another designer who's hoping to impress with her dress is anti-social behavior officer,
15:04Shelley.
15:05Oh, no.
15:06It's chewing up the thread.
15:10Sewing has been something that's got me through challenging times.
15:14Being a single mom of two, I was studying, I was working, I was raising two children.
15:19And then I got to a point where I just felt like I wasn't where I needed or wanted to be.
15:23And that's where the dark time came.
15:25Going through that difficult time and doing a bit of soul searching, that's when I decided
15:30to teach myself how to sew because I wanted to tell my story through design.
15:35So it would feel amazing to win and would definitely assure me that I am on the right path.
15:41And it would just put me one step closer to achieving my dreams, really.
15:48I love the 60s.
15:49If I could go back to one fashion era, it would definitely be the 60s.
15:53I love a mini dress, the bold colors, the pockets, the big buttons.
15:58Shelley's drawn on her personal style for her 60s-inspired mini dress,
16:02which includes complicated design details and four patch pockets for embellishment.
16:08As a woman, I love anything that has pockets.
16:10If I have a dress, I want some pockets.
16:12You know, you can put lip gloss in there.
16:14I can't have a dress without pockets.
16:16Yowie!
16:17Hi!
16:18How are you, Shelley?
16:19I'm OK.
16:20I'm OK.
16:21I'm trying to remain calm.
16:22I've got a bit of utility vibes going on with the pockets.
16:25I want to make it a bit...
16:26I don't think I'll make it more mini than that, but the mini was inspired by the 60s.
16:30I love the 60s.
16:31I love it.
16:32I can see you in that.
16:33Thank you so much!
16:35What do you think of the silhouette, the vibe?
16:37I think it's a great one.
16:38I think it's classic.
16:39I mean, I worry about the two top pockets,
16:41how they would affect you if you didn't want to enhance your breasts more.
16:44OK, gotcha.
16:45OK.
16:46That's true.
16:47OK.
16:48That is a good point.
16:49Jade actually made a good point, so definitely taking that ombre.
16:53And I'll leave the top pockets off.
16:54It will save me time anyway, which I need a lot of right now.
16:58So, she done me a favour.
17:00Great colour choice for the season, burgundy.
17:02Always a winner.
17:03But we've got to consider, because of the breadth of our audience,
17:07that it's just the appropriate length.
17:09So, short's good.
17:10It's just not too short.
17:12Oh!
17:13This pocket has not come out right.
17:15I just went wonky!
17:17And I need to do a bit of unstitching, which I don't have time to do.
17:24Designers, I've got a statement to make.
17:27You've got one hour left.
17:30Pressure, man.
17:31And she means it.
17:34I've got to get cracking.
17:39This machine's like a Ferrari.
17:40Richie, you done?
17:41Nah.
17:42Oh.
17:43Nah, mate.
17:44Far from.
17:45I've never designed or made dresses before.
17:47I'm used to menswear.
17:50My parents have Ghanaian heritage.
17:52I love the free-flowingness and the colours and the vibe that comes from Africa.
17:56But then I love the structured tailoring from the UK.
17:59I love sharpsuits.
18:01I love the way it elevates people and makes them feel great.
18:04You know?
18:05And I'd love to just blend that together.
18:08Richie is combining both parts of his heritage in his sharply tailored blazer dress with colourful fabric and extra high shoulder pads from an 80s inspired power dressing silhouette.
18:20Yeah, that's it.
18:21For me, all of these designers, including Richie, it's where are they taking their trend references from?
18:28So it's modern.
18:29I'm not sure if that one's quite on point.
18:32The wall's really forgiving, that's why I chose to work with her.
18:37Sort of hide your mistakes if you make any.
18:40I'm Bailey, I'm 23, and I'm from Cheshire.
18:43My design style's definitely, like, minimal black, white, grey.
18:47I just think it's stylish, it's you always look elevated and effortless, like, you can't really go wrong.
18:56I'm going for, like, office siren, like, very, like, secretary Bond girl.
19:01She's working, but she's going out for drinks after, and blending her shirt and her skirt together.
19:07Bailey's workwear-inspired shirt dress features a fitted bodice, pencil skirt and statement collar, all in his signature colour palette.
19:16Grey, obviously grey.
19:19It's a beautiful design, but quite formal.
19:22I do like grey.
19:23Yeah, I would say it's a safe bet.
19:25Look at that, spot on.
19:27One designer who isn't going to play it safe is copywriter Daniel.
19:32I do love a ruffle, any ruffle, any frill.
19:34I don't think there's any such thing as too many ruffles, too many bows.
19:37I think it elevates everything.
19:40My design style is maximalist, whether that's a frill, a ruffle, a bow, nothing is small.
19:47I mean, I'm not a small human in any way, so it's not that easy to find clothes that I like that are in my size.
19:52So I make clothes that make me happier.
19:55My ultimate goal is to have my own label and make things that flatter people, regardless of how big or small, tall or short.
20:01To get the mentorship with M&S would be incredible.
20:04It would change my life.
20:06Doing okay?
20:07Yeah, I think so.
20:08As you can see, the ruffle on the end of the sleeve.
20:10It's done.
20:11Daniel's dramatic design in orange velvet includes a square neckline and oversized ruffles on the sleeves and hem.
20:19Oh no, my thread has broken, so now I have to start again.
20:23You kind of have to gather your thread for the ruffles and then keep on breaking it.
20:27You just kind of have to carry on going until you get it right.
20:31So, Daniel, ruffles, quite fancy for day wear.
20:36Yeah, I definitely see it more as an evening dress.
20:39Is it something that you're going to wear a lot of times?
20:41Is it going to get enough?
20:42Probably, probably not.
20:43That versatility is super important to the customer these days.
20:47Okay.
20:48Let's do this, Daniel.
20:49You can do this.
20:50Cover your ears for them.
20:51Designers!
20:52You've got ten minutes left!
20:53Woo!
20:54I bet you could still hear me.
20:55Yeah, 100%.
20:56Oh, gosh.
20:57Come on, come on, come on.
20:58I've not managed to do one of my patch pockets and I don't know if I'll be able to get any buttons
21:10or buttonholes onto my actual dress.
21:12So that's going to go on like that.
21:15Alex is all so calm with everything.
21:18Like, I'm just...
21:19Right now, I've resigned myself to the fact that this will hardly be a dress.
21:22I think it's like I haven't even sewn for my clothes.
21:24Most of my fabric is still unused.
21:28Great.
21:29All right, designers.
21:30You've got five minutes.
21:33I'm seeing a lot of naked mannequins.
21:36Remember, gang, if it's not on the mannequin, it won't be judged.
21:40Who needs help?
21:41Come on!
21:42Er...
21:44I'm really freaking out.
21:46It's not finished, but it's just going to be.
21:48You've just got to get it on.
21:49Oh, God.
21:50How do you dress a mannequin?
21:52Lift.
21:53Yeah.
21:5660 seconds left!
21:58Just one minute to go.
21:59In case I cut the dresser.
22:01OK.
22:02This way.
22:03Oh!
22:04Are you all right?
22:05I've not got buttons or anything on.
22:08I'm not going to finish.
22:09Ten seconds, everyone.
22:11Let's go.
22:12Come on.
22:13I'm just going to have to pin it because I have completely run out of time.
22:16Five, four, three, two, one!
22:22Time's up.
22:23Well done, gang.
22:24Woo!
22:25Oh, my God.
22:26We did it!
22:27Mine doesn't finish.
22:28Come here, darling.
22:29Mine doesn't finish.
22:30She's so embarrassed.
22:31No.
22:32Don't you dare.
22:33You've got this.
22:34Breathe it out.
22:35I'm just disappointed in myself.
22:39Could you get yours for now?
22:40No, definitely not finished.
22:41Half of what I wanted to do.
22:43I'm happy I got it on the mannequin.
22:45I think after chatting with the others, I feel proud that I've finished it.
22:48This is very worrying for me.
22:52That was an experience.
22:56Let's just say that.
22:57It was tough.
22:58It was challenging.
23:00Nine statement autumn dresses are now ready to be inspected by the experts.
23:05It's time to see which of the designers have hit the brief and who is at risk of going home.
23:14What you've managed to achieve in four hours is quite spectacular.
23:17So you should be really proud of yourself.
23:20In terms of seasonality, colour, yes.
23:22The hem sweep in there is a real accomplishment.
23:26It's got the wow factor and I don't want to buy it.
23:29But I would worry a little bit about how it's cut around the back.
23:32I don't think that there's enough coverage and I'm known for being wild.
23:36Concerned.
23:37Cute.
23:38Cute.
23:39Cute.
23:40Wow.
23:41Never.
23:43But I think it's amazing.
23:44Yeah.
23:45It's a massive statement dress.
23:46Well done.
23:47Just sad that we haven't seen it finished and that it's coming across more of a jacket than a dress.
23:56Yeah.
23:57Dress was in the brief.
23:58You didn't manage to achieve that.
24:00I know the fabric's really challenging but that was something to really consider and that it was going to be a challenge.
24:05While Shelly had a dressing down for her unfinished garment, the experts are clear on what they're looking for in an autumn statement dress.
24:14They expect something fashion forward.
24:15You are a very experienced seamstress.
24:23The thing that's lacking for me is its fashion ability.
24:25They want a garment that shows off the designer's individual style.
24:26It's a little bit uniform like, perhaps not so much flair as I would like to have seen.
24:37They need it to hit the autumnal brief.
24:39It's definitely a statement dress but from a colour choice.
24:43It's not commercially viable in an autumn winter season.
24:46The design must appeal to real women customers.
24:49Office wear for women's changed so much in the last decade.
24:53It's more relaxed and so I'm just finding it a little bit difficult to place who would wear it.
24:58And offer them bang for their book.
25:00I wouldn't necessarily say that it was that versatile.
25:03It's more a one-off evening type thing.
25:06And unfortunately, it's not finished as well.
25:09With all that in mind, will Casey and Laura have hit the brief?
25:15You've done a great job.
25:16It's a versatile dress.
25:18Crossover is always really flattering.
25:20That print, it feels like an autumn floral.
25:23That's incredibly commercial.
25:25It's a really great achievement.
25:28Well done, Laura.
25:29Bravo.
25:31Casey, I can see you.
25:33Come on up.
25:38It's even the worst to last.
25:40It was an ambitious kind of design at the outset to do in four weeks.
25:45I don't know in four hours.
25:46But what I do love is there's a contemporaneous about it.
25:50And all of the pin tucking is really, really impressive.
25:55Well done, Casey.
25:56I was so surprised.
25:57Genuinely, I thank you so much.
26:00Well done.
26:01Well done.
26:03Jade and Maddie have now ranked the dresses from last place to the winner of the first statement piece challenge.
26:12In reverse order, the designer in last place is Shelley.
26:18Being overly ambitious sometimes can come back to bite you.
26:23I guess that it got the better of me today.
26:26In eighth place is Daniel.
26:29I was either going to sink or swim and today I sank.
26:32Maybe in the collection challenge to come, I'll swim.
26:34After has told this, well done.
26:35Thank you so much.
26:48Thank you so much, thank you time.
26:50Woo! She's dog-smacked!
26:53Well done.
26:55Your vision was there, and the complexity,
26:58particularly in the bodice, was outstanding.
27:00So, well done. Thank you so much. Thank you.
27:03Thank you. You're first now. You had tears earlier on.
27:06You want to go off and pop a car. Well done.
27:09In second place is...
27:14Laura!
27:15Well done, Laura.
27:17Well done, Laura. Thank you.
27:20Ticks all the commercial boxes.
27:22You answered the brief really well.
27:24Well done. Thank you.
27:26So, that means that in first place is Alex!
27:34Well done, Alex.
27:38What you accomplished was spectacular.
27:40It was incredibly complex and absolutely answers the brief
27:43from an awesome statement dress design.
27:46I can see you get a bit emotional!
27:49Oh!
27:50Fabulous.
27:51Very good.
27:52Yeah, I'm a little bit emotional.
27:54Um...
27:56I think just hearing that people appreciate the work you do,
28:01it's all you want, isn't it?
28:03Coming up on Dress the Nation...
28:05We're looking for you to create a carry-on capsule collection.
28:09The M&S customers have, they say.
28:13It looks a bit...
28:15A bit plain.
28:26Welcome back to Dress the Nation, where the top three designers have been given the role of team leaders for the group challenge.
28:33I'm gonna go for Richie.
28:35Joining Alex are Richie and Joseph, with Laura are Shelley and Julia.
28:41And on Casey's team, Daniel and Bailey.
28:45So, Jade, what is their collection challenge?
28:48We're looking for you to create a carry-on capsule collection that can be mixed and matched for a weekend away.
28:56This is all about how can you get as many outfits as possible so you get your biggest bang for your buck.
29:02You will be provided with two items that will form the basis of that collection.
29:07And what are these items? I hear you cry.
29:10We have a very simple plain white T-shirt and pair of jeans.
29:15You've got five hours.
29:16So, whatever you do, remember to keep calm and carry on.
29:22Carry on. Carry on. Carry on.
29:24Your time starts now.
29:26The teams will need to impress both the experts and real-life M&S customers with their holiday-themed collections.
29:34And the winning team will fly straight through to next week.
29:38So, lead designer. Where are we going?
29:40That is the question.
29:41I feel like Paris is calling.
29:43Barcelona?
29:44Yes.
29:45I love a little Barcelona city break.
29:46I think city break could be anywhere.
29:49Yeah.
29:50So, it's the carry on capsule collection.
29:54Easy for me to say.
29:55So, what are you expecting to see?
29:57They need to get as many outfits out of those pieces as possible.
30:01So, they can dress it up, they can dress it down.
30:03So, there's a lot of choices in their suitcase.
30:06If we can try and figure something out, we'll pull everything together.
30:08Yeah.
30:09I quite like Joe Ruffles.
30:10I love Joe Ruffles.
30:11Yeah, I really like Joe Ruffles.
30:12And I think, yeah, we all have like a little hint of it.
30:15I do quite like a classic leopard print.
30:17Despite Daniel's problems with Ruffles in the first challenge,
30:21Team Casey are using them again alongside bold leopard print
30:26to bring their jacket, slip dress and mini skirt together.
30:31Right, where's the skirt block?
30:34Looking at the M&S buyer, I'm thinking like a trench coat.
30:39I'm thinking like a silky shirt.
30:40A classic trouser.
30:41Like a wide leg.
30:42Like a wide leg.
30:43Yeah.
30:44And I think what's good is we can pair the shirt and then you've got
30:46the wide leg trouser with a t-shirt with a coat as well.
30:48Yeah, yeah.
30:49So then there's already three outfits there for one weekend.
30:52Team Alex's Parisian inspired collection includes a leather trench
30:56with stem and lapel, wide leg cords with oversized turn-ups
31:00and a gold lame shirt with decorative yoke detail.
31:05Put it together.
31:06This is bad.
31:07That is really nice.
31:08That's classic.
31:09Yeah.
31:10Because this combination is gorgeous.
31:13Yeah.
31:14But not all the teams are finding fabric choices so easy.
31:17What do you think about this one?
31:19No.
31:20You don't like that?
31:21Mm-mm.
31:22I don't like that.
31:23Well, we need something.
31:24I kind of want to be happy with the fabric that we'll be using.
31:27Well, we'll all have to be happy.
31:28It's a good challenge.
31:29We'll all have to be happy.
31:30True.
31:31Laura's team may have struggled to agree on fabrics,
31:35but they've decided to keep their Barcelona collection simple
31:39with a plain white skirt, unembellished red shirt
31:42and leopard print slip dress.
31:45So there's only one thing left to choose who is making what.
31:49So, I'm going to do the dress.
31:52Julia shirt.
31:53Shirt.
31:54Shelly denim skirt.
31:56I'm in a dilemma here.
31:57Why?
31:58I'm thinking, do I have too much of a simple piece?
32:01I don't want to play it too safe,
32:02because too safe is a bad thing.
32:04I came ninth in the...
32:06in the statement challenge,
32:08and I want to be able to show that I can design something nice.
32:12I need to prove myself now.
32:14I know if I don't do well,
32:15it's very likely that I'll be the one heading home today.
32:18I just don't want to seem like I'm taking the easy road out
32:20because I'm last.
32:21Do you know what I mean?
32:22Mine's simple as well.
32:23Mine's basically just a couple of seams as well.
32:26All right, as long as you guys are happy.
32:28Yeah.
32:29Being a teacher, I'm quite a team leader there anyways.
32:32Then somebody does have to take the reins.
32:35Disappointing, but...
32:37I just got to go with it.
32:39I want to respect the leader's decisions.
32:42So, Laura's team, they've given Shelley a white denim skirt to make.
32:51I don't think she was that happy about it.
32:53I think it's quite plain.
32:55Oh, no.
32:56It's really big.
32:57So, there's been a little bit of tension there.
33:00I am going to do my best in this competition
33:03and give it everything that I have.
33:05I'm not going to go down without a fight.
33:08Oh, Lord.
33:10Now it's too small.
33:12Designers, you are halfway through the challenge.
33:18Oh, God.
33:19Come on.
33:20While Shelley's struggling with the fit on her simple denim skirt,
33:23across the room...
33:25We've got two legs, we've got two legs.
33:28These are the wide leg trousers as they kind of stand right now.
33:31Team Alex are flying ahead with their holiday collection,
33:35despite their complex designs.
33:37I feel like we've got this.
33:38Got it in the bag.
33:40Little team here, isn't it?
33:42We are a team.
33:44Team leader Alex, hi.
33:45Hi, how are you doing?
33:46Talks us through your design.
33:48We're trying to make pieces that appeal to the customer,
33:51but fashion-forward.
33:53Oh, Maddy's absolutely loving that.
33:55It's awesome.
33:56I feel the claw oozing out of you.
33:58You're saying all the right things.
34:02You all right with the fly, Joseph?
34:03Yeah, yeah, yeah.
34:04Alex's team looks like the heroes engaged.
34:07Yeah, yeah.
34:08It's coming together.
34:09It looks great.
34:10Feels like there's a good vibe going on.
34:11It does, doesn't it?
34:12Yeah.
34:13Smashing it, guys.
34:14Casey, how are we doing?
34:15Yeah, fine.
34:16I'm almost finished.
34:17The sleeves completely.
34:18Love.
34:19Yeah.
34:20You're literally obsessed, yeah.
34:21Having come eighth in the first challenge,
34:23Daniel's hoping to wipe the slate clean
34:25with another ruffle dress.
34:27But the pressure is getting to him.
34:31Daniel, how are you, girl?
34:32You're awfully quiet.
34:33Yeah, are you OK?
34:34Yeah.
34:35I do my sewing in silence like my sadness.
34:37Love.
34:38Sorry, I'm having a bit of a wobble.
34:41No, you're not.
34:42Not at all.
34:43These guys are incredible with what they do,
34:45but they've both been to fashion school.
34:46I'm a home sewer.
34:47I don't do things as quickly as they do.
34:50That could just be fine by itself, couldn't it?
34:53Me and Bailey, our backgrounds are quite similar.
34:57I think Daniel's just a bit out of his comfort zone.
35:00If you need anything, just shout.
35:02Hello, Team Casey.
35:04Colours, what are we saying?
35:06So we went for a bit of leopard print.
35:08So you're wearing leopard?
35:09Yeah.
35:10You're wearing leopard.
35:11I know.
35:12You're wearing leopard.
35:13It's turned into a zoo.
35:18What's your design inspiration?
35:20Cats later.
35:21You ain't my mother!
35:24Yes, I ain't!
35:29Bailey, what do you think of this?
35:30Oh, my God.
35:31I love.
35:32It looks like it's going to be interesting.
35:33It's amazing how much leopard print we've got.
35:35There's a lot of leopard.
35:37A little bit limiting animal on animal.
35:39You wouldn't want to be getting up and wearing the same kind of look every day.
35:43What am I doing?
35:44I don't know.
35:45The only thing I would observe is Daniel.
35:48You can do this.
35:49You can do this.
35:50You can do this.
35:51He's really struggling.
35:52I'm just really struggling to gather this.
35:54I don't know why.
35:55Daniel, don't stress.
35:56I feel like the more you dress, the more you'll, like, mess it up.
35:58I just hope it means they are able to achieve what they designed at the outset.
36:05Oh, God.
36:06That is literally the worst hem I've ever sewn.
36:08Look at that.
36:09Sorry, I feel like I'm the weakling.
36:11It's one of those things with teamwork.
36:12You never want to let people down if you possibly can.
36:15But I feel like I might.
36:18I'm just having the worst day.
36:20Welcome back to Dress the Nation, where Daniel's ruffle dress is slipping him up.
36:35What's going on here?
36:36I don't know.
36:37For the second challenge running.
36:39I think just freestyle it.
36:41If you feel confident to do that.
36:42I do not.
36:43I do not.
36:44I can help.
36:45Just go and cut me loads of massive straps.
36:46Loads of the brown?
36:47Yeah.
36:48Come on, Daniel.
36:49We've got this.
36:50Thank you so much.
36:51No, it's all right, girl.
36:52I've got you.
36:53I'm just so slow.
36:54I think she's going to look really chic.
36:59Please take a moment, everybody, to locate your nearest exit.
37:02They can't exit!
37:03They've got 15 minutes left!
37:06Oh!
37:07Still time for duty free.
37:09LAUGHTER
37:10Yeah, easy, isn't it?
37:14Don't say that.
37:15Don't jinx it.
37:16Oh, I've got this in the bag.
37:19One last pocket and it's finished.
37:21We're going to have a cuppa.
37:22In fact, we're going to have a cup of peppermint tea!
37:25LAUGHTER
37:26While Julia's feeling confident, teammate Shelly, who came last in the first challenge,
37:32is still struggling with the fit of her denim skirt, despite its simple design.
37:38Oh, gosh.
37:40It shouldn't be so hard to have to pull over the bum.
37:44I am panicking a bit.
37:46Right.
37:47After several attempts at sizing, she's running out of time to add any much-needed embellishments.
37:54No, no, no, no, no.
37:57If you need any help, we can do it.
38:00What do you think of Shelly?
38:02Well, the design.
38:03It's a bit, um, plain.
38:06Definitely not that difficult to have accessorised it.
38:09No, no.
38:10Added a little bit more personality to show her design skills as well.
38:16She's got an awful lot to prove.
38:19Over in Team Alex, they're going the extra mile with some last-minute holiday accessories.
38:25A beret always elevates outfit, I always feel.
38:28And especially if this M&S customer is on a trip to Paris, why would she not wear a beret?
38:34Let's see.
38:36No miniature.
38:38Laura.
38:39Yeah?
38:40I think we've got that.
38:41Oh, yeah.
38:42That's amazing.
38:43Yeah.
38:44Finally.
38:45Designers, you just have five minutes left.
38:48Only five minutes to dress your mannequins and get ready.
38:51Oh, God.
38:52I swear the 15 minutes was about two seconds ago.
38:55I'm ready for your ruffles whenever you are.
38:57I'm struggling to gather it.
39:00Great. Done.
39:01Beautiful.
39:02Très chic.
39:03Right, as soon as I chuck this to you guys, you're just going to have to whack it on.
39:10Yeah.
39:18Right, here you go.
39:19Ten.
39:20Nine.
39:21Eight.
39:22Seven.
39:23Six.
39:24Five.
39:25Four.
39:26Three.
39:27Two.
39:28One.
39:29Designers.
39:30Time is up.
39:32Step away from your mannequin.
39:34Oh, okay, okay.
39:35Well, it's what it is.
39:36It happened.
39:37Can't take it back now.
39:39Can't get any extra time.
39:40But me being slower wasn't necessarily helpful for them.
39:43I hope it can't get any worse than the first one.
39:46LAUGHTER
39:47I did feel like I may have been playing it safe doing the skirt,
39:50but I stand by what I did.
39:55Three carry-on capsule collections are ready for judging,
39:58but it isn't just the experts who will be critiquing them.
40:03Oh, here we go.
40:04God, there's a lot of them in there.
40:05Yeah.
40:06There is.
40:07We've invited real-life M&S customers to give their opinion
40:11and which clubs would have them parting with their cash.
40:14We take all of our customer feedback really, really seriously.
40:20The moment of truth.
40:21They're ready to read these outfits big time.
40:24As soon as I saw this instantly, I was like,
40:26this is a bit of me.
40:27I love the baggy trousers.
40:30And I love this jacket.
40:31It speaks elegant, classy.
40:34If you were to ask me to pick, I wouldn't know
40:36because I'll take them both.
40:38You can have them, babes.
40:39Yeah.
40:40I think they all would work together.
40:42It can interchange the items.
40:43The shirt works with the jeans.
40:44It works with the hoards.
40:46The gold metallic shirt is a standout success.
40:50They've really landed that brilliantly.
40:52I would definitely buy that coat and the hat.
40:55Yay!
40:56I mean, considering that these are made for going on a vacation,
41:02it looks a bit, a bit plain.
41:05Maybe, like, it could have come with more design on the skirt, maybe,
41:10or on the shirt.
41:11I would not be personally wearing this if I'm completely honest.
41:14I think they fell into doing basics rather than something more glamorous.
41:17Yeah.
41:18They should have just pushed themselves a little bit further.
41:22Don't feel like there's a lot you can do with it.
41:24All I can see, really, is having the shirt over the dress.
41:27I think we've hit the brief of ours, even if they didn't like it.
41:31So this is my favourite collection out of the three of them,
41:35and I really like the nicer, more subtle version of leopard than you often see.
41:39The dress, I think, is not very versatile.
41:42Fair. Fair.
41:44I agree with that.
41:45There's too much leopard print.
41:46One leopard print item would be fine in a capsule collection.
41:50Three items in leopard print just wouldn't work.
41:52If you're not into animal, it really does not give you much choice at all.
41:56It's not what I would imagine from M&S.
41:58No.
42:01After hearing the customer's opinions, the experts now have to decide
42:05who is still in the running for the mentorship of a lifetime
42:08and who will be going home.
42:12Wow, interesting stuff. Interesting.
42:14They came up with three different collections.
42:17They did.
42:18Alex's team, for me, stood out.
42:21There was definitely thought around that fit balding,
42:23how you could wear them differently.
42:25The way they dressed it, it really did look rail ready.
42:27Yeah.
42:28And I loved there was clearly a kind of day-to-night theme in there as well
42:31with the lame blaze.
42:32Yeah.
42:33Let's talk about Team Kersie.
42:34A little bit limiting, I think, from a wardrobe away.
42:37I mean, I do like a sort of animal, like a matching set,
42:40but after that I'd like to see something else.
42:43It really was like a zoo.
42:46Let's talk about Laura's team.
42:48It felt quite basic.
42:50I was confused by the sort of basics with more basics
42:53because I think the thing is when you're packing for a time away,
42:56you do want to have something that stands out for you.
42:58Yeah.
42:59All right, gang.
43:00Let's talk about who we think is in danger of leaving.
43:02Shelley had to come out and really prove herself,
43:05and I didn't get that from the white basic skirt.
43:08It just needed some design to it.
43:10Disappointing.
43:11Yeah, agree.
43:12Daniel was second to bottom last time.
43:15The dress wasn't finished,
43:16and he clearly tried to prove himself in this one,
43:19but he didn't quite land it.
43:21The ruffles were a little bit overwhelming,
43:23and what could be like a nice little dress for me,
43:26I would be immediately put off by that.
43:28And the only other person was Julia.
43:30The shirt, it's technically been delivered brilliantly,
43:34but it's lacking in design flair,
43:35so we didn't see that in the first one
43:37and we've not seen it in the second one.
43:39Oh, my gosh.
43:40It sounds like you have got a tough decision to make.
43:43Good luck.
43:47Designers, well done.
43:48You've made it through week one.
43:51Almost.
43:52The team with the must-have collection
43:55and safely through to next week is...
43:59Alex's team!
44:02Well done.
44:03Come on.
44:04Charles and Richie, well done, all three of you.
44:07The combination of the colours, of the fabrications,
44:10they're quite special, but very considered.
44:13There was definitely an immediate customer draw
44:15walking over to your area.
44:17Worthy winners.
44:18I'm so happy, yeah.
44:20I'm really proud of my team.
44:22The capabilities of Richie and Joseph as team players
44:25was outstanding to me.
44:27Like, I'm not going to take this for granted.
44:29I'm going to keep pushing.
44:31But, yeah, it's going incredibly well so far.
44:35Now, we're just getting used to you all,
44:38which makes this next bit really, really difficult.
44:41Unfortunately, one of you from the losing teams
44:44will be heading home.
44:47Our experts said there's no doubt
44:49this designer has bold, creative ideas.
44:53But this week, unfortunately, their vision
44:56didn't quite come together.
44:58So, the designer leaving the competition is...
45:02MUSIC
45:10Shelly.
45:11I knew it was going to be me.
45:12Sorry, Shelly.
45:13Sorry, Shelly.
45:14I'm a bit sad.
45:15Well, a lot sad.
45:17But somebody's always got to be the first to go.
45:19Thank you, guys.
45:20Thank you, guys.
45:21I probably should have argued my case more
45:24for what I wanted in a skirt,
45:27but I've learned to be courageous, be bold,
45:31take more risks and chances.
45:33Don't give up on your droolies, OK?
45:35You've got more potential. Thank you.
45:37This, for me, is just the beginning.
45:39Even if it doesn't end how you want it to sometimes,
45:43it shouldn't stop you from trying.
45:45Next time on Dress the Nation, I love leopard print.
45:48This is challenging.
