00:00Dress the Nation, brought to you by M&S.
00:12Britain's best amateur designers are undertaking the biggest job interview of their lives.
00:18Competing to become a fashion designer of Britain's most loved fashion retailer, Marks & Spencer.
00:24Yee-haw!
00:28This week, it's sportswear.
00:30Come on!
00:33I don't actually know what I'm doing.
00:35They're making some mistakes now.
00:37Oh well, this is it.
00:40Okay, cool.
00:41Our designers will be under the watchful eye of the Marks & Spencer experts.
00:45The designer needs to have an understanding of performance and innovation.
00:50We look at what athletes are doing, potentially finding the next M&S designer is really exciting.
00:58And this week's guest expert, Alex Scott.
01:01I like the design, I think it does stand out.
01:04Well, that is great.
01:05Designers, it's sink or swim time now.
01:08Please.
01:09Let's do this.
01:10Alright, mannequin, it's you and me.
01:12Okay.
01:13Six hopefuls remain.
01:14Only one will win this life-changing prize.
01:18A job to dress the nation.
01:29Hiya.
01:30Hey.
01:32Welcome back, everyone.
01:33Congratulations on making it to week four of the biggest interview of your lives.
01:39The quarter-final.
01:40Are you excited or nervous?
01:42Brickin' it.
01:43I hope you've all limbered up.
01:45I hope you've all stretched out.
01:48Did the odd lunge.
01:49The odd star jump.
01:51The odd kick up.
01:56Because I am so pleased and happy to reveal that this week it's sportswear.
02:01It certainly is.
02:02So you'll need to be on top form to impress our expert pundits.
02:07Starting with this week's expert from M&S, it's Head of Women's Wear Design, Lisa Illis.
02:13And, of course, it's the Marketing Director of Clothing, Anna Braithwaite.
02:22Yay!
02:23Great to see you, ladies.
02:26And this week's guest expert is an absolute icon.
02:30It's an absolute joy and a pleasure to welcome an Arsenal legend.
02:34A lioness.
02:35And the brand new face of M&S active work.
02:39It's the one and only Alex Scott.
02:42Yay!
02:43Hello, hello, everyone.
02:46Vernon, I have to say, I have to say I was impressed with the lunges and the star jumps.
02:50Oh, I'll be honest with you, Alex, I think I pulled a hammy.
02:54Alex, welcome to the show.
02:56There's no, there isn't anything that you don't know about active work.
03:01What are you looking for this week?
03:02Obviously, the main important thing is, will it affect my performance?
03:06But I also love the fashion side.
03:08I want to show my personality for it to be bold and standing out.
03:12So practical, but yet allows you to express yourself.
03:14Yes!
03:15All right, gang, we've made you sweat enough.
03:17Alex, what is this week's statement piece challenge?
03:20Okay, this week we would like you to design and make a sporty swimwear piece for you to
03:25show your own sense of style and personality.
03:28Completely.
03:29This is about functional performance swimwear.
03:32This is not about poolside glam.
03:34You need to be able to do your laps or go surfing in it.
03:37It's about innovation and design coming together.
03:40It needs to perform.
03:41Athleisure is just a huge, huge, booming industry.
03:45So we are super excited to see what your take is on this trend.
03:49Just remember to make sure it remains super stylish.
03:52Designers, you have four hours to create your sporty swimwear and your time starts now!
04:00The designers now have four hours to turn their pre-prepared ideas into a piece of swimwear
04:09that is stylish, but above all else, functional.
04:12Are you taking away?
04:14Yeah, and you can't use any.
04:16And with swimwear such a specialist area, the fabric choice will be more important than ever.
04:21So not any thick black scuba?
04:23What is all the black stretch?
04:27Everyone wants to make it through to the semi-finals.
04:30A lot of pressure.
04:31Alex, you're a professional athlete.
04:33You've been in the quarter-finals.
04:35It's a different mindset, isn't it?
04:36How do you attack these really, really important gear changes?
04:40Mentality is absolutely everything in sport and actually most things in life.
04:45I don't want to see people staying in their comfort zones and taking the safe approach
04:49because actually then when we think about designs, we've seen it before.
04:53What is going to make your piece stand out?
04:56These ones are swim.
04:58Is that lining?
04:59Yes.
05:00Is it lining?
05:01That's swimwear lining.
05:02See how much easier for the outside.
05:03It's quarter-final week.
05:05Somebody will not make it through to the semi-finals after this,
05:08so I don't think there's any excuses now about not finishing things on time
05:12and details not being perfect.
05:14The bar's been raised and they really do need to deliver this week.
05:19I don't have any experience in swimwear patterns,
05:25so what I've done is I've taken a dress that I've made in the past
05:31and I've just cropped it to see if I can then just adapt it to fit into swimwear.
05:36This is called winging it.
05:38Anyone who's actually studied fashion will be like,
05:41what the hell is that woman doing?
05:44Having never made swimwear,
05:47Maria's taken an alternative approach to her design
05:50and is adapting a dress pattern into a short and fest-top combination.
05:57Maria, out of her depth, really struggling.
06:00She's gone about it in a really complicated way, overthinking it.
06:04It's not an area that she understands,
06:06but can she land making a really beautiful performance costume,
06:12making it in this way?
06:14They look like boxer shorts.
06:16Oh, well.
06:19Unless she's not naked.
06:21I'm happy that I made the pants,
06:23but no-one's going to topless swim, are they, in the UK?
06:26Certainly not going to be going M&S for a topless one-piece.
06:31Oh, David, it was nice knowing you.
06:33RIP Maria this week, I think.
06:35No way.
06:45Fresh from last week's victory in the children's wear collection challenge,
06:49ex-West End dancer David is yet again bringing his unique style
06:54in an attempt to impress the experts.
06:58Please talk us through your inspiration behind what you're doing today, please.
07:02Well, during lockdown, one of the stories I was listening to
07:04was about the Senegalese surf team.
07:07It was a girl that wasn't allowed to surf.
07:09She was adamant about it, and her parents didn't let her surf,
07:11and she just kept sneaking out to go and surf,
07:13and then she became world champion at surfing,
07:15and now, like, she's grown this whole community of female surfers out there,
07:18so...
07:19As soon as I said, like, we're doing swimwear,
07:20I don't know why my brain just went there,
07:22because you can't really make much from there.
07:24We wear shorts, and I'm not making a mankini, so...
07:26No, no, no, no, no, it's tickling.
07:30Can David succeed yet again
07:32in making women's clothing when he's a menswear designer.
07:36He hopes this Senegalese-inspired two-piece surf swimsuit
07:39will get him over the line.
07:43David, he is really shining through this competition.
07:46He's got this incredible style of his own,
07:49and he seems to be kind of designing a quite fantastic piece once again.
07:54The messaging and the story behind it all is so inspiring,
07:58and I think can touch a lot of people, but it needs to come together.
08:02Yes.
08:03Oh, they're cool.
08:04Thanks.
08:07I got some pants.
08:09David's story behind his design has gotten the experts excited.
08:12Paul is hoping to do the same with his inspiration,
08:15which he's taken from a totally different sport,
08:18but it still has speed and performance at its heart.
08:21My pattern was inspired by Ferrari.
08:24It's, like, cars, endurance.
08:26It's all to do with the curves of cars.
08:28It's all to do with the black racetrack,
08:30and I wanted those, like, swoopy elements of it,
08:32and the black elastic straps remind me of, like, tyre marks on the ground.
08:35Paul has designed a one-piece swimsuit inspired by Formula One,
08:39but with a low-cut neckline,
08:41will his design still hit the expert's performance of a style brief?
08:47Red and black is a combination as used across loads of sports
08:50because red excites the eye and it excites the brain.
08:54Yee-haw!
08:55What do you think of Paul's design?
08:57I think it's a great concept.
08:59I just don't know if it's going to be the one that you think,
09:02oh, my God, it's really forward.
09:05Designers!
09:06You're at the halfway mark!
09:08Keep going!
09:12Breathe.
09:16After two strong weeks in lingerie and kidswear,
09:18fabric shop owner Sandeep is going from strength to strength,
09:22and she's hoping to keep her confidence up in the swimwear challenge.
09:26I can't swim.
09:28I've taken one swimming lesson last year.
09:32It's quite a vulnerable feeling when you're not wearing very much clothing
09:36and you're doing something you're not familiar with.
09:38If you're anxious about how you look and feel in swimwear,
09:41you just don't want to learn to swim.
09:43So, hopefully, if I get something that I feel confident in,
09:46I don't have to worry about how I look and I can just go and do my thing and learn.
09:52Sandeep's design is focusing on swimmers lacking in confidence,
09:56so she's creating multiple bright coloured panels, but also a supportive inner lining.
10:01It's basically an inner bra built in on the inside to add support.
10:07I guess it acts like a shelf beneath your breasts.
10:09She's thought about the fact that she's a novice swimmer.
10:15It's not an area that she understands, but she's thought about safety, performance,
10:20making colour feel really dynamic.
10:22I think she's really thinking about the consumer and how people might feel in it, which is great.
10:27Daylon, what is your opinion on orange mint with lilac bunge?
10:33Girl, I am opinionated, so if you ask me, I'm going to tell you.
10:36That's why I've asked you.
10:37Oh, Daylon, what do you think of this? It's so actually amazing,
10:40but I'm not going to say it's actually amazing. I'm just going to get you to tell me.
10:43No, because I genuinely... You're fishing.
10:44It's a swimwear challenge, not a fishing challenge.
10:46No, honestly, it's gorgeous.
10:48OK, thank you.
10:49I do a lot of swimwear for my amazing friends.
10:54I'm always forcing my housemates to, like, model for me,
10:56but I stand there and look nice for the Instagram.
10:59One of my favourite things to make and sell are my bespoke bikinis.
11:03But the swimwear I do is, like, posing swimwear.
11:06It's not typically super practical.
11:08A lot of them are for people in beach clubs.
11:11Katie's designed a reversible two-piece costume,
11:14but it needs to be performance-focused
11:16and less her usual go-to of poolside glamour.
11:22I'm doing a really bad job.
11:24It's not going well, Daylan.
11:27Take a minute, re-centre yourself.
11:29This is always inevitable, though, isn't it?
11:31Like, it's always the thing you should be good at.
11:35So, Katie, I don't think she's really thought about the customer.
11:39Right.
11:40I think what she's done is thought about herself,
11:42and I know to do a reversible two-piece
11:44that is for performance swimming is quite a big arm.
11:47Not only is Katie's design missing the functionality brief,
11:52the pressure to succeed and the challenge she should be confident in
11:56is starting to get to her.
11:58Oh, my God.
12:00What, what, what, what, what, what?
12:02Breathe, breathe.
12:03Babe, it's so messy.
12:04I'm making silly mistakes now because I'm getting all jittery.
12:09I don't want anyone to see this now, now, this is awful.
12:13With a place in the semi-final up for grabs,
12:15Katie's not the only one starting to feel the pressure.
12:19Oh, that is bright.
12:21I'm just thinking about my colour.
12:24Oh, I need to...
12:27Tonally, they're just a bit off.
12:32There's bold colours and there's looking like a clown.
12:34There's a fine line.
12:36I feel like there's too much stark contrast.
12:40And I know contrast is good in swim, but...
12:44I don't think the colour combination is quite right.
12:47Oh, what is my gut telling me?
12:53Telling me not to do this.
12:55I think I'm in a brief at home.
12:57See, straight away, Mum.
12:59I just don't think she's got the confidence in herself
13:02and she's already, like, talking herself out of it
13:04that I might be going home.
13:07Oh, gosh.
13:13I just need room to breathe.
13:17Dress the Nation. Brought to you by M&S.
13:30Dress the Nation. Brought to you by M&S.
13:34Dress the Nation. Brought to you by M&S.
13:40Our designers are over halfway through their statement piece challenge.
13:53And non-swimmer Sandeep has lost faith in a swimwear design
13:57and is starting to spiral.
13:59What's going on here?
14:01Oh, I just made two of the same.
14:04I've just made two of the same.
14:06I've just made two of the frickin' same thing.
14:09I just want her to show more confidence that you've got that ability
14:12to see this through.
14:14OK? It's fine.
14:16Stay focused. Don't get distracted.
14:18Do your best.
14:19Hello, hello, hello.
14:20Hello.
14:21Are you OK?
14:22Not great.
14:23Are you worried?
14:24Totally worried.
14:25Hi.
14:26I just want to cut out.
14:28No, it's fine.
14:29What are you worried about?
14:31My colour palette is just all wrong.
14:32But now I'm like, I have to keep assembling things wrong.
14:34Some Hunter we cut out.
14:35I love these colours.
14:36You'll be fine.
14:37Just take a moment.
14:38Yeah, I've got this.
14:39I can do it.
14:40You have got this.
14:41You're going to be fine.
14:42Thank you so much.
14:43Get it, Sandeep.
14:44You've got this.
14:45Let's do this.
14:46Let's do it.
14:47I've got this.
14:48Get your head in the game.
14:49I've got this.
14:50Get your head in the game.
14:51It's fine.
14:52It's fine.
14:53It's fine.
14:54What are you worried about?
14:55What are you worried about?
14:56My colour palette is just all wrong.
14:57But now I'm like, I keep assembling things wrong.
14:58Let's do this.
14:59Let's do it.
15:00Let's do it.
15:01I've got this.
15:02Get your head in the game.
15:03While some people are having a rollercoaster of a challenge,
15:05others are more confident in their designs,
15:08coming from a more familiar inspiration.
15:10Are we getting on day learn?
15:11Beautiful woman.
15:12Yeah.
15:13How's it going?
15:14Yeah.
15:15This is my little thought process here,
15:18inspired by my favourite movie, Happy Feet.
15:20Oh, the tap-dancing penguin.
15:22The tap-dancing penguin.
15:23It makes me cry every time I watch it.
15:25Really?
15:26It just makes me feel so happy.
15:27OK, this is cool.
15:28Yeah, I'm doing a compression swimsuit that aims to compress muscles to reduce fatigue
15:34and the greater coverage reduces drag in water.
15:37Wow.
15:38And lines inspired by emperor penguins because they're amazing swimmers.
15:42Daylon has taken on the most ambitious design, but is his forward-thinking swimsuit too focused on performance?
15:52And forgetting the all-important style element of the brief.
15:55Lovely day then.
15:56Am I right in thinking he's doing a happy feet?
16:01Happy feet.
16:02Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:03It's quite a dynamic design.
16:05If you didn't know it was happy feet and took it just on a sold design, it's kind of interesting.
16:11OK.
16:12I think it'll be all about how finessed and clean does it look.
16:15Yeah.
16:16Yeah.
16:17So I have the main construct done.
16:21You can't spell penguin without win.
16:24No.
16:25You can't say...
16:26No, I put the...
16:29There's something here.
16:30I put the win in penguin.
16:31Yeah, I put the win in penguin.
16:32You can't spell penguin without win.
16:35It's sink or swim time now.
16:38You've got five minutes left.
16:41Oh, my God.
16:42How...
16:43How the flipping heck...
16:44Right, come on.
16:45Let's go.
16:47I'm just frazzled.
16:49Right, this is it.
16:50Are we ready?
16:51Point, Sandy.
16:52Ta-da!
16:53Get your sunglasses out.
16:54She's blinding.
16:55It's not perfect.
16:57That's the understatement of the century, isn't it?
17:00All right, mannequin, it's you and me.
17:02She's probably got the arm on.
17:03I would buy something that has this kind of style.
17:07Obviously, I'd be looking for a refund if it looked like this.
17:10The shoulder straps are a bit janky.
17:13She's a bit frayed.
17:15Bum cheeks would look really nice in this, though.
17:20You've got one minute left!
17:24This is impossible.
17:27I'm doing the mint way.
17:29Come on, Petal.
17:31Oh, it's terrible.
17:33I mean, she looks slightly good, a bit revealing, but I'm OK with it.
17:39It's OK, it's OK.
17:40Oh, it actually does look all right.
17:42I'd wear that.
17:43What was I worried about?
17:44What was I worried about?
17:46Five, four, three, two, one!
17:55Designers, your time is up!
17:57You're right, girl.
17:58Good job.
18:00Well done, everyone.
18:01Well done, everyone.
18:02I think saying this was a tough one might be the understatement of the whole competition.
18:06It was savage.
18:07Well done!
18:08Didn't go great.
18:09The finish of this one wasn't very good.
18:13It's just that piping around the edge.
18:15I've never done it.
18:16It's really, really, really messy.
18:18I mean, if I did try and drown in it, I mean, I would get rescued, so at least I've done that.
18:22Today I just felt so under pressure.
18:24My mind just didn't have the space to literally, like, think it through, so I did struggle.
18:29You just don't know how it's going to go there, do you?
18:32Shall we go and have a cup of coffee?
18:33Oh my God, yeah.
18:34So the designers have created six sporty swimwear outfits, which they hope will send them a step closer to an incredible job opportunity at M&S.
18:55What I love is that you've still brought your vintage inspiration in a really kind of modern, cool way with the pink.
19:02Adding that sport element straight away, I do see it's spelt differently in some places, so that screams out at me.
19:09Sport!
19:13I love that it screams performance, and also the side that I love is the fashion element.
19:19It looks good, very flattering.
19:21Overall, I'm liking it.
19:24You have definitely developed a kind of a name for yourself through the competition about innovation and really kind of reflecting your own style.
19:31We asked for a statement piece.
19:33That's absolutely what you have delivered us.
19:35You know, it absolutely ticks the box.
19:37You did a really good job.
19:38Dayla's design is in the sweet spot of sporty swimwear.
19:42What he succeeded in finding was the balance between functionality and performance, a vital element that all the designers were meant to focus on.
19:51I worry about the low-cut element.
19:53If I was actually thinking about performance, would I be worried about that in terms of, am I coming out of it?
19:58Is it secure enough in there?
20:00Your story behind the fact that you're a new swimmer and your consideration around vivid colours and visibility are actually performance features in themselves.
20:12It's a really nice idea, well executed.
20:16Believe in yourself more, please.
20:19The designers were also not to forget style.
20:22I think it's amazing, given that David hasn't worked with stretch fabrics before, the way that the design and the colours have come together feel really strong.
20:31Go on.
20:35I was really surprised to see you seem to struggle a little bit.
20:38I just thought you would have, like, come into your own this week.
20:41I actually think it falls somewhere between performance and poor glam.
20:46I think it just needs a little bit more research and kind of understanding.
20:50I really, really struggle to make it look good, but I would do it so differently if I was to make it again.
20:56OK, designers, our experts have had this here, but you're not quite out of the deep end yet.
21:05We're now going to reveal your positions in reverse order.
21:09Anna, Lisa and Alex have ranked each outfit from their least favourite to the winner of the statement piece challenge.
21:16The designer in last place is...
21:24Katie.
21:25Katie.
21:27Uncharted waters for you, Katie.
21:29Yeah.
21:30Ooh, it was weird.
21:32Fifth place is Maria.
21:35Fourth is Paul.
21:37And third, David.
21:39So, the designer in second place, picking up the silver medal, is...
21:48Sandeep.
21:50Come forward, Sandeep.
21:51Well done.
21:53A big beaming smile.
21:54That's what we like to see.
21:56Which means in first place, gold medal goes to Daylon.
21:59Come on, Daylon.
22:01Yes.
22:04Well done, Daylon.
22:05Alex, it was a great outfit, wasn't it?
22:07It really was.
22:08Straight away, it screams performance.
22:10It screamed your personality.
22:12It's a stroke of genius.
22:13Thank you so much.
22:14Well done.
22:15Well done.
22:16Thank you so much.
22:17My heart is literally racing.
22:18Yay!
22:20I have two very happy feet and I'm absolutely...
22:23I'm chuffed to bits.
22:25Coming up on Dress the Nation, we want you to come up with an athleisure collection.
22:31Things get heated in the Groot Challenge.
22:33I just need Maria to sew.
22:35I'm a bit faster, put a foot down on the pedal.
22:37And the M&S customers don't hold back.
22:40But I would freeze in that person.
22:43You're not naked underneath.
22:44Dress the Nation, brought to you by M&S.
23:07Dress the Nation, brought to you by M&S.
23:14Welcome back to Dress the Nation, where our six hopefuls following the statement sporty swimwear challenge now have to pair up.
23:27And it's up to the three lead designers to pick their partners.
23:32Daylon, as you won the statement piece challenge, you get to pick first.
23:36Well, I'm very excited to be working with Paul for the next challenge.
23:41Sandy, who would you like to choose?
23:47Katie, please.
23:48Katie!
23:53So Maria, come on up and join.
23:55David.
23:57Thanks for seeing you here.
24:00Alex, what is their collection challenge, please?
24:03Okay, this time we want you to come up with an athleisure collection.
24:09So think yoga, walking, running, football, any which way.
24:15But also throw in something extra.
24:17Can I go to the shop in it also?
24:19Does it look good?
24:20So kind of both elements to it, please.
24:22One of the things that we do quite a lot is from to.
24:25So thinking about from home to the gym, or from the gym to work, what outfits you might wear then, and that hybrid adoption of clothing.
24:35Now don't forget, after the final whistle blows, your collections will be critiqued by real customers.
24:42Think of it as a post-match analysis.
24:46Football chat, that.
24:47You two are making me feel at home.
24:48Thank you so much.
24:50All right, designers, you'll have a total of five hours to come up with your athleisure collection.
24:55All right?
24:56Good luck.
24:57The rest of the finishing line starts.
25:01No!
25:02So in five hours, the designers need to create stunning athleisure collections.
25:09These will not only have to be practical for sport, but also suitable for carrying on with the rest of your day afterwards.
25:17Choose a sport, don't we?
25:18Well, we can go with yoga.
25:20Yeah.
25:21It could be like when you go to yoga, but then you go to brunch with the girls after.
25:24You could do the yoga pan.
25:25Yeah.
25:26And then the lovely fleece for afterwards.
25:28Do you like that?
25:29Yeah, I like that.
25:30I'm excited for this.
25:31Yeah.
25:32Team Sandeep have opted for a flared pants, sports bra, exercise top, and a fleece jacket.
25:38These will all have to marry together and be practical for their chosen activity of yoga.
25:44I don't think my gym is probably as fashionable as your gym.
25:52My immediate knee drop reaction was like hake.
25:54What if it's an inner city person that's going on a hike?
25:58We're going to smash this.
25:59I'm excited for this.
26:00Team Dalen are making a cagoule and trousers suitable for everyday city use and for hiking at the weekends.
26:08With M&S customers to impress, as well as the experts, it'll have to withstand all manner of critique as well as the weather.
26:15Oh, we should do it from London, Scotland.
26:18From you to me.
26:19Yeah.
26:20It could be in the city and it could be in the hills.
26:22Just take the wheel.
26:23They're going to ask us, like, where's this person going?
26:26What's their story?
26:27Aren't they?
26:28City worker riding a bike to work?
26:29I've had this, like, idea of, like, riding a bike from the gym to a meeting and no-one knowing that, like, what you're wearing is any different.
26:35Maria and David are creating an all-weather outfit for those commuters going from the gym to work.
26:42But as they've designed it to be worn all year round, they need to ensure they use materials suitable for all seasons.
26:49That's a nice colour.
26:50It's a nice colour, but it's not, like...
26:52Yeah, but I don't think we're going to get the perfect waterproof hextile, are we?
26:57What should our designers be thinking about when attacking this particular challenge?
27:03So, athleisure is about wearing clothes in a slightly different way.
27:06Performance is at the heart of it.
27:08If the fabrics are the wrong choice, if there isn't stretch, breathability, water repellency, anything like that,
27:15if they're used in the wrong way or it hasn't been considered, it could really be a problem for us.
27:20So, we didn't find any waterproof materials that met, sort of, our overall look.
27:27If I could make my jacket out of the same colour as your trousers and then have this as the toweling on the inside.
27:36OK. Yeah.
27:37Yeah.
27:38Hiya.
27:39Hi.
27:40How are you?
27:41Yeah, good, thank you.
27:42Yeah, I think David and I have come up with a really good design that we believe in, so...
27:44Talk us through it.
27:45So, we have come up with a trouser and a jacket for somebody who is going from the gym into work.
27:52OK.
27:53And so, more of like a tailored athleisure wear piece.
27:56The outside is going to be made from this textile, so ordinarily...
28:00Can I ever feel?
28:01Yeah, sure.
28:02So, this is a...
28:03It's a woven material, a bit like a tailoring fabric?
28:12Yes.
28:13Ideally, we wanted a waterproof fabric, but for the overall look and feel of the garment together, we've gone for more of a tailored look with more of a streetwear look.
28:26So, you've kind of decided to use the look of it rather than the practicalities of it?
28:31Yes.
28:32Because you've not used waterproof fabric purposely?
28:35Um...
28:36No, we haven't.
28:37Good luck.
28:38Thank you very much.
28:39I think we'll just chuck a cup of water over it and see if it dries.
28:46Yeah.
28:47So, we might have missed the brief there.
28:49Yeah.
28:50Let's just go.
28:51Let's go with it.
28:52They've gone after the colour rather than necessarily the fabric and the performance.
28:55Yeah.
28:56And they've ended up just missing the essence of the brief.
29:01There is that waterproofing in there for, like, showerproofing and stuff like that, but it just wasn't in the colours that we needed.
29:07So, it's just...
29:08Yeah, we couldn't use it really.
29:10Yeah.
29:11We just have to go with what we're doing.
29:13Daylon, how is it going?
29:15Hi.
29:16Okay.
29:17I have a very special request.
29:18I may not be interested in sport, but my niece is an absolute massive Lioness fan.
29:24And I would very much like to ask for your...
29:26Come on, then.
29:27I will sign away.
29:28Her name is Chloe.
29:29Her name's Chloe.
29:30She's a massive football fan.
29:32How have you found working in the team?
29:34I love it.
29:35But, um, I'm starting to feel like a bit of an assassin.
29:38I have sent three people home, like, the last three group challenges.
29:41The designer leaving the competition is...
29:46Julie.
29:48It's all right.
29:49Don't matter.
29:50Don't matter.
29:51Tendai.
29:52Oh.
29:54Ryan.
29:59It's starting to feel a bit like I need a group win.
30:01Yeah.
30:02That's all right for you, because you keep progressing.
30:04I keep...
30:05I'm developing myself quite nicely at the expense of others.
30:08Paul, don't listen.
30:09La, la, la, la, la, la, la.
30:12Tell me a bit about your design.
30:14We are doing this hike, city to Glasgow, hike outfit.
30:18Right.
30:19So we've got panels that are made of mesh to allow for breathability.
30:22And then it's overlaid with another fabric, so it's still windproof.
30:25I like that.
30:26Thank you so much.
30:27See you later.
30:28Yeah.
30:32So some brilliant designs seem to be emerging.
30:34So we've got Daylan and Paul here.
30:36I love the kind of the story and the inspiration they've developed on this one.
30:40I think the design concept feels really strong.
30:43I love it.
30:44Should I top set sheet as well?
30:46Yeah.
30:47Fabric choices feel like they really have a handle on the brief and how to bring it to life.
30:52So, yeah, it feels positive.
30:54If we can actually pull it off, it'll be so good.
30:57We will pull this off.
30:58There's no Ev.
30:59You've got me.
31:00I'm a good luck, terms teams.
31:01Yes.
31:02Which will counterbalance my curse.
31:03I could shake the curse today.
31:04I would really like to.
31:05You are not Ev.
31:06You are shaking the curse today.
31:08I ain't going nowhere.
31:09We ain't manifesting that.
31:10What if I'm actually assassinating people on purpose?
31:14They seem really together.
31:15Yeah.
31:16As a team and on the same page.
31:17And they're really executing the idea.
31:19Yeah.
31:20Will we get up with a leg?
31:25That sleeve is everything.
31:27Keep working, Daylan.
31:28Keep working, please.
31:33Sandy.
31:34Yeah.
31:35How are you doing?
31:36Yeah, getting there slowly but surely, but hopefully less slowly soon.
31:39I've got faith in me and Sandy.
31:41We're the dream team.
31:42And another team that also seems to be working really well together is Katie and Sandy.
31:47You know, they're talking to each other.
31:48They're working together.
31:49It's good to see the positivity because we've had a few tears along the way with Sandy.
31:54I don't want to see you today.
31:55I know.
31:56I don't think we will.
31:57I'm happy with our colour palette.
31:59I think it's going to look really cute together.
32:01I'm excited to see how it turns out.
32:04We've got this.
32:05We've got this, as Katie says.
32:07So Katie actually came last, didn't she, in the last challenge.
32:10But saying that, she seems to be bouncing back.
32:13Super resilient.
32:14So brilliant kind of personal skills, which always seem to come across for Katie.
32:18It's good to see.
32:19She's super positive, which is great.
32:21I still feel like a deer in headlights, whatever the saying is.
32:25Doing not as great in the last challenge has proven to me how much do you want to be here and how much do you want to be in the final.
32:32To be able to work in one of the biggest retailers in the country would be so amazing.
32:37As a concept, yoga and the cover up, I think it's spot on.
32:42So for me, it's about the final execution.
32:44I made my first gusset.
32:45Where is it?
32:46It's tiny.
32:47I keep using it.
32:48A little triangle that goes in the crotch area.
32:51I don't actually know what the purpose of a gusset is.
32:54I just know that a lot of sports leggings, and I was looking at my own yoga pants, I had this in it.
32:59So I just thought I should put it in.
33:01Right, I'm going to sit down for this.
33:04Some gusset concentration.
33:14Oh, God.
33:16I've really not done that gusset well.
33:18Like, I don't really know what's happened there.
33:21So it's like she's pooed herself.
33:23After the last challenge, I'm very vulnerable.
33:26The gusset could let me down, and we're getting to a point in the competition where they're really going to have to nitpick.
33:30She started really well, and now I think she's a little bit floundering because how beautifully it's made really needs to come through this time.
33:39It's a lot of work going into it.
33:41It is.
33:42And we need a finish.
33:43Yeah.
33:44That is awful.
33:47What do you do when you've got 30 minutes to go?
33:49Dress the Nation, brought to you by M&S.
34:02Dress the Nation, brought to you by M&S.
34:15Welcome back to Dress the Nation, where Katie, having finished last in the first challenge,
34:22now needs to make sure everything is perfect with her athleisure yoga outfit, or she may be going home.
34:29It's just sagging at the bone.
34:32Now, do you have time to tweak it or not?
34:34I'm going to get rid of that gusset bit.
34:40Right, this should be the good stuff.
34:47Hey, boys.
34:48Hey, Gorge.
34:49Hello, angels.
34:50Hey.
34:51How's it going?
34:52Good.
34:53So good.
34:54But have you got your outfit sorted?
34:55We do.
34:56I think we're making pretty good time, to be honest.
34:58Do you like a hike?
34:59Do you go on a hike?
35:00I don't.
35:01Hiking is just walking, though, innit?
35:02Not really.
35:03Why not really?
35:04What the hell?
35:05Is it not?
35:06You can see some very technical elements to your athleisure work that you're making.
35:09You know, he's got a line in.
35:10I love the drawstring that, Dallin, you've got on there.
35:12Yeah, we've got an air vent for air circulation.
35:14There's a little herd.
35:15Yes.
35:16Love that.
35:17There's a little herd.
35:18It's got the drawstrings in there ready.
35:19Love that.
35:20Now, listen.
35:21Once upon a time, Vernon was a model.
35:23Yeah.
35:24It doesn't surprise me.
35:25He's been on the catwalks with Milan, darling.
35:27I'm good at well.
35:28So, come on.
35:29Come on.
35:30Model face now, please.
35:31All right.
35:32Come on, do that thing that you did the other day.
35:33I will, I will.
35:34Are you ready?
35:35He just does it.
35:36Yes, come on.
35:37He's very good at it.
35:38He's very good at it.
35:39Get it.
35:40Get it.
35:41Get it.
35:42Hey.
35:43While Team Dalen might be calm and in control, Team David are not in such great shape.
35:49Not only has the practicality of their materials been called into question, but they also
35:54know someone's going home and the pressure is getting to them.
35:5915 minutes to go, designers.
36:01I just need Maria to sew.
36:03A little bit faster for the foot down on a pedal.
36:06Don't you worry about me.
36:09David and Maria.
36:10These two haven't worked together as a pair before, and there just seems to be definitely
36:18some, I wouldn't say conflict, but definitely differences of opinion.
36:22It's not enough time to do buttons.
36:23I reckon you should hem it first.
36:24I reckon hemming it is more important.
36:25I'm going to put enough poppers so that it's actually on it, and then I'll hem it.
36:38You are part of a team.
36:39It's never just about you and this is what I want to do, it's how you work with others.
36:43It's like whether they actually manage to do that in the end and create something that
36:47does look like it's a piece.
36:49Yeah.
36:50It'll be very interesting to see how this one works out.
36:52Fingers crossed though.
36:53It needs a popper in it.
36:54All right then.
36:55I actually live on the edge.
37:00You've got ten minutes left.
37:07Come on Sandeep, we've got this.
37:09We've got this.
37:10We've got this.
37:11It's going to look good.
37:12These trousers are looking sick.
37:15It'll only take me a minute to iron this.
37:17Why don't you just put it on and then steam it on?
37:19Put my headband.
37:20Oh cute.
37:21I like that.
37:22It's easy by the way.
37:23Because you want to get the same look though because it's too hard material.
37:27No but at least we'll have it on the mannequin.
37:29A little thumb hole.
37:30Just checking it fits before I say the other one up.
37:33Can you get on doing?
37:34I'm so desperate to win a group challenge, I can't even tell you.
37:37You're going to do it.
37:38I'm the good luck charm.
37:39I get everyone to the top.
37:40Oh, it's just going to go through.
37:42Do you want to draw first?
37:44Designers, you've got two minutes left.
37:47Get your jacket on.
37:49Why do you think so hard to dress?
37:51No!
37:52Did those arms just come off?
37:53They took me so long to put on arms.
37:56Oh!
37:58Right.
37:59I need to iron the collar.
38:00Okay, let's just dress her.
38:01I swear dressing a child is easier than a mannequin.
38:04Here we go.
38:05Put the arm in.
38:06Get some scissors quick.
38:07You've got three seconds left.
38:08I've got them here.
38:09I don't know if these are at eight.
38:10No, no, no, don't tie it closed.
38:11I'm not going to you, David.
38:12Let me just finish it.
38:13Is that right?
38:14Five, four, three, last minute gossip check.
38:15That's better.
38:16I'm happy.
38:17Two!
38:18They think it's all over.
38:19It is now!
38:20We did it!
38:21I love it!
38:22I love it!
38:23I'm so proud of it!
38:24Love is enough.
38:25Look how sick this is.
38:26Are you kidding?
38:27Are you kidding me?
38:28Look how great that is.
38:29Well done, David.
38:30Thanks for helping me.
38:31It's okay.
38:32I appreciate you.
38:33It's okay, no worries.
38:34We've done it.
38:35We've got our finished outfit.
38:36I think the M&S customers will like it, because I think it's quite chic and it's quite different.
38:40It's all over.
38:41They think it's all over.
38:42They think it's all over.
38:43It is now!
38:44We did it!
38:45I love it!
38:46I love it!
38:47I'm so proud of it!
38:48It's all over.
38:49It's all over.
38:50It's all over.
38:51It's all over.
38:52It's all over.
38:53It's all over.
38:54It's all over.
38:55It's all over.
38:56It's all over.
38:57I think it's quite chic and it's quite different.
38:59I absolutely want to go through to the semi-final and the finals.
39:03You know, I'm not ready to go home yet.
39:05It's a bit of us.
39:06That's our baby, that is.
39:07That's our baby on that mannequin.
39:10We brought that into the world.
39:14I feel like Lisa's a bit...
39:16She looks like she's going to be really tough on us about this.
39:18I don't want to go, obviously.
39:20So, yeah, I don't know.
39:21I don't know any minute.
39:22I would totally buy this whole outfit.
39:24Oh!
39:25I love it!
39:26I love it!
39:27After the last challenge, I think I was very vulnerable and could definitely have gone.
39:32I like to think what I just did saved myself, but everyone else did do amazingly.
39:36Oh, the headband!
39:37The headband!
39:38Oh, sugar!
39:39They're really going to have to nitpick things apart to separate us all.
39:42So, it could let me down, things like the gusset, but I'm still really proud of myself.
39:47I did all I could in the time.
39:48One pair's a leisure offering will be labelled this week's must-have collection.
39:56The other four designers will be up for elimination.
39:59It's judgement time.
40:00They've really, really done a good job, haven't they?
40:03They're great.
40:04I mean, you can see that they really have worked together as a team.
40:08It feels like a really cohesive set.
40:10I can imagine people in my gym wearing that head to toe.
40:14I think the fact that they've done four pieces and made it work as an outfit is really, really fab.
40:19It's just the execution of the pant is not brilliant.
40:22Can you imagine that on sale in an M&S?
40:25I could.
40:26Yeah?
40:27I could.
40:28Wow.
40:29I think it looks great.
40:30I would go in there and pick that off the chef.
40:31I really wouldn't.
40:36This is hiking.
40:37They had this theme from London to Glasgow, which I thought was really lovely.
40:40That's really impressive as well.
40:42It's fantastic.
40:43I'm so impressed.
40:44It's fantastic.
40:45Sometimes when you have got layers on, you need it to be able to open up and breathe and let that air in.
40:50That looks great.
40:51Shall we hike on over to the next?
40:53Let's.
40:58It's actually ended up to be a lot more of a cohesive outfit.
41:03I'm always aware with performance in sport and when you are doing anything athletic is the fabric.
41:10Because if he's talking about cycling to work and then just, okay, you can still wear the pant, but will you be able to with this fabric if you're sweating on the way?
41:17So he's just chose the wrong fabric in your mind.
41:20It is actually really beautiful.
41:22Yeah.
41:23It's just not, it's not hit the brief, has it?
41:25Yeah.
41:26But it's not just what the experts think.
41:29M&S customers have been invited to share their opinions too.
41:34Oh, I'm nervous.
41:38It could be brutal, you never know.
41:41Colour palette is beautiful and like the extended cuffs with the thumb hole.
41:49Yeah.
41:50So that you've got that kind of comforting feel.
41:52I like the flared trousers, but maybe not necessarily to go to Pilates because like it would just like go over your legs.
42:00But I like it for more like after the gym to go walk around with my girls, have a coffee.
42:07It's fair enough.
42:08Should still wear them.
42:09Yeah.
42:10True.
42:11With regards to the hoodie, I actually like the hoodie.
42:13I could see it in M&S.
42:14I could see it.
42:15Yeah, definitely.
42:16Well done, my mum.
42:18To be honest, it looks more like something I would wear in the gym.
42:24I would freeze in that personally for me.
42:27With your ventilation shafts here as well.
42:29You're not naked underneath.
42:31Actually, if you are hiking, it's a layering system.
42:34So you actually have underneath.
42:36So you're not going to be freezing, right?
42:38I like the piece.
42:39I like how it looks.
42:40I like the colours.
42:41I might buy it.
42:42I might buy it.
42:43It's a nice piece.
42:44I like it, yeah.
42:45I definitely would buy it though.
42:46Good lad, you can have it.
42:47I wouldn't particularly wear it to the gym.
42:52I see this more like walking the dog, going for brunch with the ladies.
42:57Dog walking is more of the sport now.
43:00It definitely feels more like the leisure side of athleisure.
43:04Maybe it wouldn't be so good for working out in,
43:08but it is definitely something that's more wearable casually.
43:12Yeah, yeah, yeah.
43:13It's cool.
43:14I mean, we need that one.
43:16The experts will now consider the designer's performance across both challenges, as well
43:23as the customer's comments, as they decide which designer will be leaving the competition.
43:29This is quite intense because we are moving forward into the semi-finals.
43:34So, Lisa, who has really shown on the collections challenge, please?
43:37So, Daylon and Paul have really impressed us on this challenge.
43:40The way they come up with their concept, fabrics they chose, the way they've worked together.
43:45And they've delivered an outfit that is really new, feels really forward.
43:49It's really practical as well.
43:51So, they've done really, really well.
43:53Katie had kind of a moment with the sports swimwear challenge.
43:57You know, she's been up there in top two, top three consistently, and I think to suddenly come bottom was probably a massive shock for her.
44:06And I think what has really impressed me is that she just thought, that was the last challenge.
44:11This is a new one, let's just go for it.
44:13And she's positive again, and it's absolutely beautiful what her and Sandeep have created.
44:18Let's talk about our third pairing, David and Maria.
44:23You're always going to be working in a team.
44:25When you go and get that job and you're working for M&S, you're a part of something.
44:30So, you have to be able to listen, that this is my strength, but actually, this is what we need to deliver.
44:35So, in that respect, I think these two struggled.
44:37Could their collection have put them in danger?
44:40I think it absolutely has this week.
44:42I think the standards are so much higher, and they just haven't hit the mark.
44:47They've not hit the brief, so they're definitely, they're both in danger after this.
44:55Designers, well done on an incredible sportswear week.
44:59The experts have taken on the customer feedback and made their final decision.
45:05The team with the must-have collection of the week and heading into the semi-final is...
45:17Daylon's team.
45:18We brought the courage!
45:31The team work has really shone through and I think it's that delivery of a total brief.
45:37you thought about the customer and the end use the functionality and performance so well done to
45:42you both thank you so much now it's been an amazing team effort but unfortunately one of
