00:00a group of Britain's best amateur designers are undertaking the biggest job interview of their
00:07lives competing to become a fashion designer at Britain's most loved fashion retailer Marks and
00:13Spencer because design is so important we are constantly trying to find the next best talent
00:20this week it's lingerie and sleeper everything could go wrong get it in get it done chop chop
00:28I chose a really complicated design you've got this our designers will be under the watchful eye of
00:35the Marks and Spencer experts when it comes to looking for a lingerie designer to join our team
00:41I'm looking for someone who has great style really entrepreneurial innovative mindset and this week's
00:48guest expert Bozzy Huntington Whitelag he gets incredibly playful and fun go go go he's making
00:56it up as he goes along I like it this just looks awful everything is literally perfect nine hopefuls
01:02remain all competing for the dream job to dress the nation
01:08hiya hi you guys welcome back congratulations designers I'm making it to me too how are you feeling
01:25this week is all about one of marks and spencer's biggest sellers now don't panic we're not going to
01:35ask you to bake a call in the caterpillar or produce some Percy pigs it's all about lingerie oh la la so
01:44deciding whose undergarments are going to come out on top from M&A head of lingerie design Susie Jenkinson and
01:53of course marketing director of clothing and a brave pay yeah and completing this week's expert
02:02lineup a supermodel whose M&S lingerie collaboration is one of the longest standing on the British high
02:10street please welcome Rosie Huntington Whitelag welcome thank you thank you for having me I'm very
02:21happy to be here all right Rosie well let's reveal this week's statement piece challenge okay so this
02:26week we would like you to design a luxury sleepwear piece reflecting your own personal style the sleep has
02:33to be stylish but comfort is number one at the top of our agenda it is so important that we keep pushing
02:40the boundaries pushing the style so we're so excited to see what you'll come up with in this challenge
02:45designers I've got to remind you that this is a job interview and if you fail to impress the experts in
02:51either challenge they can send you home at any point you have four hours to complete your sleepwear and
03:00we're off for a nap so ready steady go we've some pre-prepared design ideas the designers now have
03:09four hours to make sleepwear that's comfortable stylish and made with luxurious fabrics before
03:15they'll be ranked by our experts from first to last I've never met sleepwear before so everything
03:22could go around we've got this all right the fabric room is no open fabric fabric oh I don't know what
03:34I want Susie sleepwear is it a dressing gown is it pajamas is it a nightie all of those things and more
03:40is that too sexy no I think that's gonna look nice when it comes to sleepwear fabric is absolutely crucial
03:46how that feels against the skin how it's going to move with you throughout the night the other thing
03:51that's how a fabric and a print looks on the shop floor because that's what draws a customer
03:55immediately over to the design oh that is gorge she said fashion week where I'm somebody that leans
04:03towards sort of softer feminine colors with our sleepwear range and it's gorgeous bold colors it's
04:09a bit me right cracking do you reckon the green or the pattern I think the green stunning and look
04:20around the room no one else is doing green if you pull it off it'll be sec for color loving designer
04:26Chris he's sticking with a bright color palette like he used for his summer dress last week but will bold
04:32colors work as well on luxury sleepwear as they're due for summer dresses I found the perfect colors
04:39are you loving it like genuinely it's making me happy whether it made me happy at the end ask me in a
04:44couple of hours I would describe my style as dramatic bold very bright colors will bring out something in
04:54you emotively your inner self I want to win this so badly that I can taste it such an opportunity to
05:05change my life from office worker to designer and somewhere like Marks and Spencer's to be able to
05:12impact what people wear how people feel to be given that opportunity is next level I love it like I want it I
05:20need it making it work work work work Chris is making the bold decision to use canary yellow and
05:31bright pink for his boyfriend style night shirt with contrasting pockets and a dramatic color
05:37ways ways the other pink going as well it'll be like yellow on top and then when you lift it up
05:43to be pink I just love the colors so it matches like the pocket yeah what do you think of Chris's
05:50boyfriend shirt I think from a styling perspective for me it's probably my least favorite color combination
05:59it's meant to be the other way around because I've done the pink on the outside and the yellow on the
06:07inside like imagine yellow pink under actually happy accident people would you wear something like
06:24like that to sleeper not my style also hoping to stamp his unique style on his sleepwear his former
06:38Western dancer David I want something that's not the same as I've already so add something that they
06:44haven't seen or on they might have seen it before but not in MS putting a hoodie on it and little pleats
06:50it's all comfort my inspiration with going to MS and seeing how can I elevate it and make it more I guess
06:59cool streetwise you know
07:01David was commended by the experts for bringing his personal street style to his first ever women's work design last week
07:08Your style is super cool. Thank you very much
07:11Will he be able to use his street race style to create a sleep set that also feels luxurious
07:17my desire style is like street wear slash tailoring for my dance career everything has to be like loose and baggy and feel like you can be free as you're moving
07:25I feel like it could fit with M&S because they have good tailoring already but I want to like give them a bit more flavor
07:32Do you know what I mean? I do think I can win this competition
07:35I feel like it'll be a sign from the universe to say yes you're doing the right thing
07:39David's adding some flavor to a traditional pyjama set by giving it a slouchy silhouette and adding features like pleated trousers and a hood
07:47Hello David
07:49Hello David
07:51How are you?
07:53I understand your background is menswear
07:55Yes, it is
07:57So how have you sort of taken your experience and applied that to a women's luxury sleepwear design?
08:01I saw my dad when I was younger wearing a two-piece pyjama set
08:03Yeah
08:05So I was like I'm gonna do a two-piece but do it my way for a woman
08:07More relaxed
08:09Put a hood on it so she can like you know feel a bit cozy when she's at home
08:12How do you think the hood's gonna work when you're in bed?
08:15Well I've kind of thought about it being more of an autumn winter sleepwear so you know it's a bit chilly still so you can throw it on and still carry on sleeping
08:22I really like the colors and the design it's just really contemporary
08:25Yeah
08:26It just feels like really modern I'm loving it
08:30I am just putting a hood together
08:32I'm originally from Nigeria so we have warm blood so when it gets a bit cold I do sometimes go to bed with a hoodie on
08:38What do you think of his design so far?
08:45For me I'm a little bit concerned about the hood
08:48Yeah
08:49But it's definitely got a kind of street casual vibes the design so I'm quite excited to see the final range
08:55It's his style that's come through again and that's what the challenge is so
08:58Completely
09:00Oh Katie
09:01No offence but it looks like you're in your pgs
09:03I know well I thought pajama week I'll come appropriately dressed
09:07Yeah?
09:08What are you making?
09:09So luxury lovely pyjamas I would wear on a girls trip with my friends
09:13No
09:14When we're getting ready, drinking Prosecco, doing our makeup
09:16Oh cute
09:17So there's going to be a little matching bag
09:19Oh my gosh yeah like a little travel bag
09:22Yeah
09:23Driven by her success in week one neuroscience graduate Katie is creating more items than any other designer
09:29She's making a scrunchie and a bag to go with her shorts and cami set
09:33What I'm quite excited to see with Katie is the accessories because we know you know our customers love a little freebie as well
09:41Oh
09:42Oh
09:43Nobody wants to see that
09:44Winner from week one's statement challenge Daylon has had help from his sisters to design the ultimate shorts PJ set which he hopes will guarantee a good night's sleep
09:58Now you look like you're really involved in some detail there what what are you working on?
10:03I've been given some very real details about what women want for a pyjama
10:07My beautiful older sisters have some like prerequisites they love a camisole top
10:11Yeah, the problem is they lack support so inside there's going to be a 360 jersey support
10:16Our customers absolutely love our tops with secret so they do in them so that sounds like that's a great bonus for sleepwear
10:23I think he's really exciting
10:24Yeah, this sounds like my perfect sleepwear honestly
10:28All the pressure
10:29Sounds like Daylon has his sisters to thank for hopefully getting him one step closer to his dream job
10:35Designers you're halfway through
10:37Get it in get it done get it out
10:42So Rosie what's gonna catch your eye from our designers?
10:47When it comes to sleepwear I think comfort is key
10:50Comfort practicality how something feels when you wear it and then after that the styling comes into play
10:57This is no easy feat I'm definitely intrigued to see how the designers are gonna execute today
11:02Yeah
11:04Lingerie expert Rosie knows exactly what she's looking for but will finance director Maria deliver?
11:12She's used to upcycling vintage creations that are typically more about glamour than comfort
11:17Hello Maria
11:19Hi Maria
11:20How are you feeling?
11:21A bit scared
11:22I've never done nightwear or lingerie before
11:25This design is all me
11:27I really love 1950s very glamorous night dresses
11:32Oh amazing
11:33I work in finance four days a week and then one day a week I upcycle
11:39I literally can turn rubbish into high fashion
11:43I genuinely believe me and Marks & Spencer's together we really can get people to look at sustainable fashion in a new light
11:52Maria's vintage inspired night dress has a full-length silhouette with layers and bore details
11:58She wants it to be worn both in the bedroom and out
12:02But is she prioritizing style over comfort?
12:05It is gonna have a zip in it just because I want it to be versatile when you're up and you're kind of drinking your gin cocktail on your veranda
12:13Have you considered how comfortable zips are gonna be to wear in bed?
12:17I'm all about fashion not comfort
12:23Certainly our customers number one point they always feed back to us on sleep whereas it has to be comfortable
12:30So I think one something to bear in mind
12:34I commit to something and then I see it through to the end
12:37I don't usually let other people's kind of opinions or you know things influence mix just don't think it's authentic
12:45I reckon this is my go-home task
12:56Welcome back to dress the nation where our nine amateur fashion designers are creating statement sleep sets
13:02Don't freak out
13:06I'm about to put the elastic through and suck them off
13:09Designers you've got one hour left
13:13Just show that and let them know
13:16A little bit louder
13:19And while some of them are taking big risks with their designs
13:22It's stressing me out because I'm just not used to these materials
13:26She doesn't feel like me but I need to get over it and just stitch it together and if it's rubbish it's rubbish
13:32Others are playing it much surfer
13:35So I'm making a lingerie inspired nightdress kind of like a slip
13:39The inspiration behind it was I was looking at kind of like the 80s and 90s Princess Diana
13:44Someone that's very elegant
13:46I hope they like my design
13:47Hope it's not too basic
13:49I love the colour of what Ryan has chosen for his material
13:52My concern is that he's maybe not pushing the boundaries enough
13:56Yeah, he might be playing it a little bit safe
13:58A little bit safe
14:02So my gran she loved a cup of tea
14:04And I remember the china tea set so vividly
14:07So this fabric really really represents that
14:10Paul is creating a short and shirt set
14:13Made in a fabric inspired by his grandma's tea set
14:16And he's adding frills to give it a feminine feel
14:19So what do you think of Paul's design?
14:22I love the inspiration
14:25But I am a little bit worried that it could look quite classic
14:28And we've seen it before
14:32The Stairman piece challenge is all about showing off the designer's personal style
14:37Something that fabric shop owner Sandeep failed to do in week one
14:41This week she's determined to redeem herself to the experts
14:44Hi Sandeep!
14:46Hey!
14:47How are you doing?
14:48Better than last time
14:50Better than last week so that's good
14:52Is this something you usually wear to bed?
14:54Yes, so I already have an M&S set in this colourway
14:58But I've added more me to it
15:00So bows, cute lengths
15:02While Sandeep is hoping to show off her elegant but cute style with her navy sleep set
15:06Tendai is showcasing her vibrant personal style with a bright orange wrapped pyjama set inspired by her travels to Morocco
15:16This is something that
15:18If my friends say let's meet up for a cocktail I'm wearing it
15:22Then I would wear it to bed
15:24I mean if you can't wear it going for a cocktail
15:27What is the point?
15:29Tendai
15:31Very bright colour choices, what do you think?
15:33Very, very bold colour choices
15:35You wouldn't necessarily see in a luxury piece of sleepwear
15:39Now I don't want to alarm you but you've got 15 minutes left
15:44Go, go, go, go, go
15:46If it's not on the mannequin it won't get judged
15:49Just put that pedal to the floor
15:54I'm too scared to put it on the mannequin to be honest
15:56I think I might be finished
16:02There's no bells and whistles but I like it
16:07Three minutes left everyone
16:10Three minutes!
16:11Get it on a mannequin quick
16:12Get it onto this
16:13This is horrendous
16:15Damon, can you help me please?
16:17I wanted to stitch some bows on but I'm just glad that there's a zip on there
16:21Get those buttons up now
16:22You get those buttons on
16:23The bag the screen she's done, I just hope it's not too green
16:27Ah, here it goes
16:29This just looks awful
16:31I chose a really complicated design
16:33Should have not been so naive
16:35Do you want to thread this back into the metal thing?
16:38She's looking gorgeous!
16:40Well done!
16:41Everything is literally perfect so I'm really really happy
16:44Almost there!
16:46She's almost ready!
16:47She's got a pants on!
16:48Quick get that on her!
16:50Just leave it like that
16:51I reckon just leave it like that
16:53You've got five
16:55Four
16:57Three
16:59Two
17:00One
17:02Designers, your time is up!
17:04Step away from your mannequin!
17:07Mine was shocking
17:12Looking around everybody else's designs
17:18I was disappointed with mine
17:20I would just love to go ahead to the next challenge
17:23I would love to have another chance
17:27I put my garment on the mannequin
17:29I did feel it was giving a little bit clout
17:31I need to be honest
17:32I don't think I've done enough to be lead designer on the next challenge
17:34But I think I've done enough to match the brief
17:39I'm glad that I've got a finished garment on the mannequin
17:43Just happy that it's over
17:44If I'm completely honest
17:46Nine statement sleep sets are ready for judging
17:52Now it's time for the experts to see who's delivered beautiful but comfortable designs
17:59That show off their personal style
18:01And whether they've all done enough to stay in the competition
18:06In terms of the silhouette and the proportions
18:10I think you've really hit the nail on the head
18:12Today you've really shown how resilient you are
18:16You've bounced back
18:17And it's really, really nice to see
18:19Because all of those qualities are what people need as a designer
18:22Thank you
18:24Did you enjoy it?
18:26When it ended I enjoyed it
18:28Little bit disappointed that the zips
18:31Seen it into the final garment
18:33I do love this slinky long silhouette
18:35But the zips and sleepwear is just a big, big no-no
18:37With Maria missing the mark by prioritising style over comfort
18:43The experts are clear about what they're looking for when it comes to luxury sleepwear
18:49It must be ambitious
18:51It's a really simple night dress
18:55Perhaps you could have pushed the boundaries a little bit further
18:58It must show off the designer's personal style
19:02I love the idea behind sort of taking quite a classic style
19:07And making it really frilly and quite feminine
19:10Whilst not being too out there
19:13I really like the little detail that you've put in the shoulder here
19:16The thing that lets it down would definitely be this orange
19:19It's very, very vibrant
19:21It's a little bit intense for me
19:23It has to be comfortable
19:25It was brilliant to hear that you got feedback from your sisters
19:28I love the inner support
19:31And actually I love the combination of innovation with modern simplicity
19:37But most importantly, the designs must be luxurious
19:46Well, I think this does reflect your personal style
19:50However, I'm not sure the colour combinations are quite working
19:54That's fair enough
19:55What lets us down is that it doesn't have any essence of luxury for me
19:59I am only getting kind of like Ronald vibes here
20:04Ronald McDonald?
20:06The shade of it all
20:08I think you just got to be really careful between your personal style being colour
20:12And actually what is practical and commercial for a broad audience to actually wear
20:17Two designers who seem to hit all these criteria are Katie and David
20:22I'm really a big fan of this
20:25I think it's incredibly playful and fun and I could really, really see it as part of the Rosie brand
20:31I love the very cute, slightly kitsch look
20:34I could see this in a luxury boutique in Tokyo, perhaps
20:38Get your passport!
20:39I can completely see your personal style, the pleating detail I'm guessing has come from how you move as a dancer and we move a lot in sleeping so that is genius
20:55I love the hood and that's a very, very cool detail
20:59It's really hard to come up with something that is truly different
21:03But somehow you have come up with something that I've never seen before
21:07I would love to see something like this in M&S
21:09Thank you so much
21:12The experts have now ranked the designers from whose sleepwear has impressed them the most to least
21:21Saw in last place, I can reveal that it is
21:26Chris
21:29In 8th place, Maria
21:34Ryan is 7th, Tendai is 6th, Bith is Sandeep and in 4th place comes Paul
21:433rd place is Katie
21:46We love the really kind of quirky femininity and we love the accessories too
21:51Thank you
21:53In 2nd place is Dylan
21:56We all loved your design, it absolutely reflected your style and your personality
22:03We thought it was brilliant, so well done
22:05Which means this week's winner of the Statement Peace Challenge is David
22:16The design was so innovative and unique, we're really impressed, so well done
22:20Thank you so much, thank you, I really appreciate that
22:23I'm buffed, I don't know how that happened, I don't know how that happened, honestly I had no idea
22:32But yeah, I'm happy, I'm really happy that I've come out on top there
22:36But for one designer, the experts have a surprise decision
22:41Now as you know, this is an interview process
22:45Longest and probably the most difficult of your life
22:48Longest and probably the most difficult of your life
22:52And the experts can send you home at any stage
22:56After this week's Statement Peace Challenge
23:00The experts have decided that
23:02Chris
23:11You will not be going any further
23:15I thought so
23:20I'm sorry
23:21I have absolutely had the best time
23:24Meeting these guys has been next level
23:26And I know that each and one of them is going to blow you away
23:30Yeah
23:36Coming this far for me is an absolute win
23:38With the huge group of talented designers that we have
23:42You've got to pick someone, today is my turn
23:44I stuck with who I am and it was authentically me
23:47So you can't really do any better than that, can you?
23:50Coming up on Dress the Nation
23:52You're ready for your next challenge, the collection
23:56There's tension in the lingerie challenge
23:58Have some conviction
24:00You're really making me panic
24:01I feel strongly about that
24:03We have to make a decision because time is ticking
24:05I see their reactions
24:07I don't think that's like a flattering shape
24:09It's not doing any sexy
24:13Welcome back to Dress the Nation
24:19Where eight hopeful designers are halfway through lingerie week
24:23And following a shock elimination
24:25It's down to the top four designers to pick their teams for the next challenge
24:30I'm going to pick Ryan
24:32My Zimbabwean partner in crime, Tenday
24:36I'm going to go with Sandy
24:38And that means
24:40Paul and Maria
24:41Say the best to last
24:42Say the best to last
24:45Okay design teams
24:47That means you're ready for your next challenge
24:50Which is the collection
24:52So we want you to design a lingerie set that includes at least three items
24:58But remember this is about M&S
25:01What our customers would love
25:02So you keep style at the heart of it
25:04Remember our experts aren't the only one critiquing your collection
25:08The customers will also be sharing their opinions and trust me they're not a shy bunch
25:15It's the best of luck
25:17Now then you've got five hours to complete your collection
25:21You turn stars now?
25:23Come on! Hurry up!
25:24Oh my god
25:28Well obviously bra
25:29Yes
25:30Do you know how to do one do I do?
25:31Yes
25:32Oh do you?
25:33I've made a few bras
25:34Of course that's why I chose you
25:36Rosie you've got a long-standing collection with Marks and Spencers
25:40What is the key to success?
25:42Whenever we start on a collection I have a sort of story in my head
25:46I think of a woman, how she wants to feel
25:49And that lingerie should enhance her day, should enhance her feeling
25:53And so it's definitely important that storytelling should always empower our customer
25:58I think the theme should be like cooking for your husband coming home
26:02So I'm gonna make a bralette with like a really cute pant like lacy
26:09Oh yeah, I like that
26:11Team Paul are producing a kitchen romance collection that includes a cotton kimono made by Maria
26:17And a matching lacy knicker and bralette made by Paul
26:21But will the traditional concept be modern enough for Marks and Spencer?
26:25What are the pitfalls in this challenge? What could go wrong?
26:30Looking at all of the details across every piece, does it actually look seamless?
26:34So it's designed almost by one person
26:37So I think working together with all of that different design handwriting is a possible pitfall
26:42Even though we're both guys, you've menswear and womenswear
26:46So I think we can bring in the femininity but with a masculine edge
26:49Which will make women look stronger
26:51And I think this day and age and fashion forward I think women want that
26:54Exactly
26:56Team David are creating a versatile collection including David's own take on a kimono style robe
27:02With a matching pair of shorts
27:04But the most difficult item will be a bustier bra
27:08Which will be completed by Ryan
27:10Feel that?
27:12That would look nice, that would be nice in the short
27:14Do we want to go like bright and colour in summery or do we want to go a little bit more sexy
27:18A little bit more night time vibe
27:19I think as long as it all is really like matching but not like too much sense if there was a print on the fabric
27:26Yeah
27:27We can pick out elements of like some of that colour on like the straps or whatever
27:31Yeah
27:32But just not in a garish way
27:33Team Katie are creating a lingerie set that includes a technically challenging underwire bra made by Sandeep
27:41A matching knickers, robe and eye mask all from Katie
27:46Part of being a designer is being able to work with other people in your team and really good communication
27:53It's absolutely vital
27:55You press me the print for the body for
27:59No, we're doing it in plain
28:01The print is going to be the cuffs, the placket and the belt
28:03I was just worried that is there not too much yellow
28:07I am just thinking about grace
28:09I don't think we should be scared of this yellow
28:11No, okay
28:12Have some conviction
28:13Yeah
28:14But then I'm scared that I'll get it wrong
28:16Tentai, you're really making me panic
28:18I think we should do the body in yellow and the trims in print
28:20I feel strongly about that
28:21Okay
28:22But we have to make a decision because time is ticking
28:24Okay
28:26Team Dalen are struggling to agree on their designs with four items to make comprising of a kimono, a wrap skirt, a bustier and a bonnet
28:34Now Tentai wants to use yellow sparingly on the cuffs
28:38While Dalen wants to go bold and use it as the main colour
28:42Tell me a little bit about the influence and how your personality is coming through
28:47So we are both born in Zimbabwe
28:49Yeah
28:50We definitely want it to feel exotic
28:52We're trying to find a balance between the print and the yellow
28:55We don't want it all to be print because that's a bit aggressive
28:58But we also don't want it all to be plain
28:59Yeah
29:00Because I think that's a little bit too muted
29:02Just one piece of advice I would say
29:03Sometimes less is more
29:05Right
29:06Thank you so much for that
29:07Very grounding
29:08Good luck
29:09See you later
29:10Thanks
29:14Do you still think the yellow is the way to go?
29:17Yeah, because she was saying less is more
29:19Less is more
29:20Yeah
29:21I'm nervous about being in this competition
29:25We are talking of Max and Spencer
29:27Everybody knows it's the top of the top
29:30For me to have an opportunity like this is once in a lifetime
29:34If I don't get it, I don't know what I would do next
29:37So we've got Tendai and Daylin here
29:42Is this one on brand?
29:46Mmmmm
29:47Do you like it?
29:48For me, just a bit too much going on
29:50Yeah
29:51Yellow's a beautiful colour
29:52Yeah
29:53I'm not sure it works in this collection
29:54Yeah
29:57You've got this Katie
29:58You're gonna smash it
30:02Having nearly been sent home last week
30:04When her dress was completely at odds with the rest of her team
30:07For this collection challenge
30:09Sandeep is going all out to redeem herself
30:11As she's the only designer attempting a tricky underwired bra
30:16Hi Katie
30:17Hi Sandy
30:18Hello
30:19How are you?
30:20Good, thank you
30:21So what's the concept behind the design?
30:23Our theme is all about
30:24You want to treat yourself
30:25Because you're going on a summer getaway with your partner
30:28Loving it
30:29What are you loving?
30:30I love bra making
30:31It's just so enjoyable
30:33So I'm going for an underwired bra
30:36Are you doing an underwired bra?
30:37Yes
30:38Well
30:39Underwired bras are very challenging to construct
30:43It is all about the detail when you're making a bra
30:45Particularly an underwired bra
30:47So honestly, good luck
30:48Thank you
30:49Thank you so much for speaking to you
30:50Thank you
30:51Thank you
30:52I want to keep these and wear them just because I'm so proud
30:55There we go
30:56It's a bit damaged
30:57Oh my god, that's so cute
30:58That is hot
30:59Salt
31:00Salt
31:01Salt for the lady in the floral dress
31:03I'm excited to see how Sandeep executes an underwired bra
31:07Which is definitely a challenge in itself
31:10She had a really hard first week
31:12And the fact that she's turned around and she's come back
31:15This is really her moment, isn't it?
31:17Yes
31:18Katie
31:19How cute is that?
31:22I love it, I love it
31:23Oh, that looks amazing, Sandeep
31:25I want to buy that
31:26M&S, please can you put it in your next collection so we can all have one?
31:30Yeah
31:31After winning the statement piece challenge
31:33Face-time lingerie designer David
31:35Is maximizing his chances of success by teaming up with experienced women's wear designer Ryan
31:42I'm going to be going blind because I've never designed lingerie before in my life
31:46So I'm 100% trying to bounce off Ryan's expertise in women's wear design
31:52But after a disappointing result in the first challenge, pressure is getting to Ryan
31:59Dude, I'm not... I don't think I'm 100% on this bra
32:02Why?
32:03I just don't, like, I don't know, I'm just not 100% like, it's going to fit, the collection
32:08Seems like Ryan is having a little bit of crisis of confidence
32:13Yeah, I think given the fact that he has some lingerie experience, I'm surprised that he's not further on
32:19Just really struggled today, like, with handling things
32:22And yeah, it's just really got to me and I don't know why
32:24I don't want you to panic last minute, okay?
32:27I'm just going to try and keep you calm, that's my thing
32:29Don't worry man, don't worry, I can see you shaking
32:31Oh, I just want to let you down
32:41Welcome back to Dress the Nation, where Ryan is facing a crisis of confidence in the lingerie collection challenge
32:48So right, are we going to get, erm, the lace on it or not?
32:51Yeah
32:52You OK? Yeah
32:53What's wrong? No, I don't know
32:54It's just sore-fed leave
32:55Don't worry, don't worry, don't be upset with yourself
32:57Let me go and press it open, so it's flat open
32:59All right
33:01I was born without my left hand
33:03People ask me a lot if my disability affects me as a designer
33:07Literally, how can you make clothes with one hand?
33:09And the simple answer is, the same way you do with two
33:12I'll find a way around anything
33:14But I definitely struggle asking for help
33:16It is OK to ask for help, because I just never have
33:21Do you think they're working together as, like, a pair?
33:23Yeah
33:24I got a sense that there was a lot of support from David for Ryan
33:28Sorry
33:29I just want to let you down
33:30You're not going to let me down, man, don't worry
33:31I just want to help you
33:32At least the public are judging, so I hope someone will love the simplicity
33:36Oh, well, well, well, well
33:37Don't worry about the public, don't worry about anyone else
33:40Just worry about finishing this
33:41Yeah
33:42I want you to finish it, that's all I want
33:44I just don't want people thinking that I can't do it when I know I can
33:49How are you getting on, Maria?
33:50Yeah, OK
33:51First time team leader Paul is paired with Maria, whose love of all things 1950s has inspired the theme behind their collection
34:03Hi Maria
34:04Hi Paul
34:05Hello
34:06Hello
34:07What's the concept?
34:08Tell us about the concept
34:09There's a woman cooking for her husband coming home
34:11So she's in a kimono that's a little bit of a cover up, but then when she reveals she's very ready
34:18Goodness me
34:20Yeah
34:21That's quite a concept
34:23Traditional concept
34:24Mm-hmm
34:25Do you think this is a concept that we as M&S would want to be associated with?
34:32I mean, it does sound old-fashioned, but in our busy lives, you know, sometimes it's nice to just surprise your partner with a meal that you've cooked and why not do it in an M&S three-piece
34:42Sexy lingerie is super on trend, I'm just not sure about the cooking in the kitchen concept
34:48Yeah, OK
34:49Thank you very much
34:50Thank you, good luck with the challenge
34:51Thank you
34:52Thanks
34:53Do you think we should reconsider our storyline?
35:01Yeah
35:02Maria and Paul, this is an interesting one, isn't it?
35:06I'm not sure I felt that it was the most modern concept
35:10However, when I actually look at the design, I thought it had some real potential
35:15You've got one hour left! 60 minutes left!
35:19Right, I need to get my skates on
35:21Needle down, foot up, press this and try and sew
35:26Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, there you go
35:29Oh
35:31I feel like I might just walk out
35:33Vivi, no, what's wrong?
35:35I just feel overwhelmed, it's just
35:37One step at a time, if you need to take five minutes to have a breather, have a breather
35:41Vivi, we're in this together, OK?
35:43Just
35:44It's OK?
35:45Yeah
35:46You've got this
35:47Now, let's get on the mannequin and see what it looks like
35:49Does that, like, sound like it's ripping?
35:52Don't force it, you don't want it to rip
35:54Don't freak out, it's fine
35:56Can we add a panel just here?
35:58Now I was thinking I'd smashed it
36:01Oh, wait, I've caught the back of the lace in the strap
36:04Can you unpick it?
36:06No, it's just going to rip that whole thing apart
36:08I think it looks almost intentional
36:10There's, like, an element here
36:12Oh, that looks good! It is intentional!
36:14Yes, yeah
36:15It's always intentional
36:16I'm so glad I have you
36:17I'm glad I've got you
36:19Designers, we want your collection on the mannequins in 15 minutes
36:26We're going to be to the wire, aren't we?
36:28Yeah
36:29My hands are trembling like a little mouse in the wind
36:32That goes this way
36:35Oh!
36:36What?
36:37I've done it the wrong way, Rose
36:38Oh, no, don't
36:39It's so slippery, it's falling down
36:41Get some double-sided tape or something
36:43How is this little top causing me so much trouble?
36:45Oh, it's stress
36:47Right, quick, we've got to address it, quick
36:48Take it off, take it off, take it off
36:49Take it off
36:50Oh, my God
36:55Okay, threads, let's go, threads, threads
36:57Grab your scissors, let's take off threads
36:58I'm so worried about letting you down
37:0030 seconds, designers
37:02Chop, chop
37:03Here we go, here we go
37:08Yay
37:09It's not perfect, but it's good enough
37:11Please
37:12Fabulous
37:13That is it, time's up
37:15Designers
37:17Designers
37:18That is the end of your collection challenge
37:20Step away from your mannequins
37:22Thank you
37:23Honestly
37:24You're amazing
37:25I would have finished with that
37:26You're amazing
37:27You're amazing
37:28Ah
37:29This was a harder challenge for me
37:31It's just a waiting game now
37:35I don't know if I've done enough to stay in the competition
37:37I hope that the judges can see that I've grown from one challenge to the next
37:41You good?
37:42Yeah
37:43I feel like I've actually done more
37:44No, you haven't
37:45I find it really difficult
37:46Like, it was just the first time I've ever struggled
37:48I've learnt that sometimes it's okay to ask for help
37:51And going forward I think that's what I need to work on
37:59Four lingerie collections designed for Marks and Spencer are complete
38:05It's now time to see what the experts think
38:08I really like the silhouette
38:12It's got David's style and handwriting all over
38:17I feel really confident going into judging
38:20I just wanted to put, like, my style into the lingerie
38:23I'm really a big fan of this cocoon style wrap
38:28I actually feel really inspired by the cut of this myself
38:32There's something quite cosy and relaxed about it
38:35Yes, yes
38:37For me, there's too many ingredients
38:41It's just a bit of a mess, unfortunately
38:44I'm feeling really confident
38:45I think women are looking for something that is a bit different
38:48I think we're really playing on that
38:50I think customers do want versatility
38:51They want bang for their buck
38:53The items just don't marry up
38:55And it's just very over top
38:57My parting words were
38:59Sometimes less is more
39:02I love this colour
39:04This lace has some real stretch to it
39:07And looks very comfortable
39:08But there's no support here in the cups
39:12When we told Susie and Rosie about our theme
39:14I think they were unsure about it
39:16So hopefully seeing the final look
39:19Will give them an understanding of the look
39:21We were trying to achieve
39:22Which was really around sort of fun
39:23And spicing up your evening
39:25I think it feels quite commercial
39:27Very commercial
39:28Whether as a team they've pushed the boundaries enough
39:31Is a question for me
39:34Wow
39:35Sandeep and Katie
39:36Have actually been the only ones really
39:38To attempt a proper underwired bra
39:41That is so impressive
39:43I think it looks like a bra that actually would fit and support
39:47Which is absolutely amazing
39:49I just hope that Rosie likes it
39:51It would be the absolute world
39:53If she even gave it a tiny compliment
39:56It's fresh
39:57It's pretty
39:58It's playful
39:59I'm pretty blown away by this
40:03But it's not just about what the experts think
40:07As M&S customers have been invited to share their opinions too
40:11Uh oh
40:12Oh God
40:14Let's see their reactions
40:16She's touching already
40:17I love the kimono
40:18I love the shape of it
40:19Definitely hit on something with that shape
40:20Yeah
40:21I think the robe is beautiful
40:22And I think you could wear that like
40:23Even out
40:24I think it's really nice
40:25Ooh
40:26And I like the detailing on the bra
40:27I'm surprised
40:28I'm happy
40:29Yeah
40:30So yeah
40:31So yeah
40:32Calm down
40:33Chill
40:34Chill
40:35Chill
40:36Got it
40:37Yeah
40:38I love the material
40:39I love the pattern
40:41And I love the colours
40:42But I don't think I would really try it on
40:44I don't think that's like a flattering shape
40:45I think the robe by itself is really gorgeous
40:48It doesn't give me lingerie
40:50It gives me more like chilling at home
40:51It's not giving me sexy
40:52Well it's not sexy for something
40:53I think the robe is really pretty
40:54It doesn't give me lingerie
40:55It gives me more like chilling at home
40:57It's not giving me sexy
40:58Well, it's not a sexy set, it's just a luxury.
41:04I think it's really modern.
41:07It's really versatile, you could wear this with jeans.
41:09And I really appreciate the dimensions on the pant.
41:12They're sexy, but they have some bum coverage.
41:17I'd buy it, yeah, I'd buy it.
41:19Yeah, definitely, yeah.
41:20Well done, baby.
41:21Yeah, well done.
41:23The colours are just so spring and fresh.
41:26Yeah.
41:27Well done, Vandy.
41:28Look at that.
41:29And the knickers at the front are super plain.
41:31But if you go round the back, you see how sexy it is.
41:35Yeah!
41:38She saw it.
41:39Well done.
41:40I also really like how they brought an additional piece in with the eye mask.
41:43That's a really easy way to upsell to me.
41:45That was the brief that we went for.
41:47I could see that on my 21-year-old daughter.
41:50But then also being mid-50s, that's really attractive.
41:53I think it's...
41:54Yeah, totally.
41:55The style is ageless.
41:56Yeah, it really is, isn't it?
41:58Having heard what the customers have to say, the experts must now decide who's still in
42:02the running for their dream design job, and who isn't M&S material.
42:07So, week two, lingerie week.
42:10How do you think the designers have done overall?
42:12I think it's been a really challenging week, actually.
42:15There's probably been a couple of people that have been consistent.
42:18I think we saw on the first challenge, David just was stand out.
42:23He's got a unique flair to his design, and I really appreciated his pyjama set.
42:28I thought that was just so cool, so unique.
42:31And Sandeep.
42:32Absolutely.
42:33Today's challenge, she just saw.
42:35I love the journey that Sandeep's been on.
42:37If you think, God, she's literally been on a roller coaster.
42:40The amount of effort she put into her design today, I thought she's done brilliant.
42:45But actually, the rest of them have been quite up and down.
42:48Who do you think is in danger?
42:51I think, for me, it's Tendai, which is a shame, really,
42:55because she was one of the stars in week one.
42:58But this week, she lost her confidence.
43:00And really, in the final piece, there's just a lot going on.
43:03Sleep, lingerie, and beach all at once.
43:06It just isn't what our customers would go for.
43:08Who else is in the dangers on?
43:11Well, it's got to be Ryan.
43:13The first challenge, I think we all felt that the nightwear piece was just a little bit too simple.
43:20I think, for me, Maria, we were quite concerned about the original concept.
43:27However, the actual design work, we feel it's really super commercial.
43:33The first challenge, the zip is a big problem for me,
43:36because Sips and Sleepwear is just a big no-no.
43:39She's got potential, but she needs to start thinking about her narrative a little more.
43:43Oh, gosh, it seems like you've got your work cut out for you.
43:46There's a lot of people floating around in the danger zone.
43:49So, good luck with your decision.
43:51Glad it's not up to us, Vernon.
43:53No, it's not.
43:54Well done, teams.
44:00You've always shown that you know your way around bra and knickers.
44:03And the team with the must-have collection, and safely through to next week, is...
44:09Katie's team.
44:19This was such a standout piece for me.
44:24I see it as a set on the shop floor at Marks & Spencer, and also a set that I would love to have personally.
44:31So, well done.
44:33You've made something to do!
44:36I knew it would be a good week for me.
44:39I just had to, like, really believe in myself.
44:41They actually like what we created.
44:43It's a huge achievement, and, yeah, I couldn't ask for more.
44:47Now, we'd love for the rest of you to stay, but sadly, we do have to say goodbye to one designer.
44:56Our experts thought that this person has real creative flair.
45:03But this week, they struggled to execute their vision and meet the brief.
45:11The designer leaving the competition is...
45:18Tendai.
45:21Oh, sorry.
45:24It's all right.
45:27I totally understand where the judges are coming from.
45:30I struggled a lot on this challenge.
45:33Part of me is really disappointed, because I would have wanted to go as far as I can.
45:38But it was the best experience ever.
45:41I'm really proud of myself.
45:44Next time on Dress the Nation.
45:47This week, you are going to be designing the kids.
45:50Go.
45:51Look how little the mannequin is.
45:53It's going to be cute.
45:54Wow.
45:55It looks really gorgeous.
45:57Getting there.
45:58Right, let's do this.
