00:00Dress the Nation, brought to you by M&S.
00:10Five weeks ago, ten amateur fashion designers began the biggest job interview of their lives.
00:18Competing to become a fashion designer at Britain's most loved fashion retailer, Marks & Spencer.
00:25Right, let's do this.
00:27When I worked for Bolton Council, this reminds me of the tabar I used to wear.
00:32So sick.
00:33Oh well, it's a bit tight.
00:34It's very ready.
00:36Goodness me.
00:38They went all out to impress the experts.
00:41We're going away by this.
00:42Happy accident, people.
00:44Not my style.
00:45Just looks a little bit sad.
00:48And that's why she's called Scary Spice.
00:52But one by one, they left.
00:54I think you could have come up with a design that pushed you more.
00:57The designer leaving the competition is Julie.
01:01I'm only getting kind of like Ronald vibes here.
01:04Ronald McDonald?
01:05Chris?
01:06It's just a bit of a mess, unfortunately.
01:08And I rarely put my kids in the shoes.
01:11Right.
01:12Do you see it's spelt differently in some places.
01:15Port.
01:16Maria.
01:17There's a lot going on.
01:19Sometimes less is more, I suppose.
01:21Taylor.
01:22Elephant in the room.
01:23Yeah, the cravat.
01:24Probably a bit too much for our customers.
01:26Paul.
01:28Tonight, it's the final.
01:31I'm not going to get emotional.
01:33And the pressure is on.
01:35I don't know what I'm making.
01:36I'm super ambitious.
01:37Fabric can make or break a dress.
01:39Come on.
01:40I'm getting this done.
01:41I'm going to blow everyone away.
01:44Cutting corners.
01:45They'll come face to face with the experts.
01:47Why do you want to work at M&S?
01:49Um, um, I'm trying to say.
01:51How versatile are you?
01:53You just need to open your mind and open your eyes up a bit more.
01:56How do you think you navigate that?
01:57Um, me, sorry, let me try that again.
02:00Before the ultimate feedback.
02:02I can't believe it.
02:03From the catwalk.
02:05Oh my God.
02:06It's amazing.
02:10Who will win this life-changing prize?
02:13The winner of M&S Dress the Nation is.
02:17A job to dress the nation.
02:27Hi.
02:30Designers, congratulations.
02:33After six incredibly intense weeks, you have made it to the grand final of M&S Dress the Nation.
02:41I genuinely cannot believe that I'm in the finals.
02:44It blows my mind, but I'm so excited for it.
02:47I can make myself proud and my family proud.
02:49I'm going to do everything I can to win.
02:51I can do this.
02:52Now we started this competition with ten amateur designers.
02:57And by the end, one of you will become a fully-fledged pro.
03:02Bwah!
03:03I did not think I would make it here at all.
03:08I blinked and suddenly I'm in the final.
03:11But yeah, I'm really, really proud of myself.
03:13The life-changing job you've been dreaming of is just one challenge away.
03:18But before we reveal what it is, let's meet your final judging panel.
03:22From M&S, it's the Brand Master General, Marketing Director for Clothing, it's Anna Braithwaite.
03:29Helping M&S decide who to hire is a world-renowned fashion designer with her own iconic label.
03:38It's Bella Freud!
03:40And a presenter and model whose outfits send the internet into a fashion frenzy every weekday morning.
03:51It's Kat Dealey!
03:52Hi!
03:53Kat Dealey!
03:54Hi!
03:55Hi!
03:56Hello!
03:57Alright designers, it's time to reveal your final design challenge.
04:03Kat, will you do the honors please?
04:05I will, okay.
04:06For this challenge, you have to design and create two full party wear outfits for a festive occasion.
04:16Nice.
04:17Now, as if this final couldn't get any more exciting, your final collections will be worn by real-life models
04:25and judged on an actual runway darlings.
04:29But that's not all.
04:30The winning collection will be available to buy online and in selected M&S stores all over the country.
04:39Just in time for the festive season.
04:41What a prize!
04:42And you get a job!
04:43Unbelievable!
04:44How exciting!
04:45There's no time to lose.
04:47You've got eight hours to create your party wear collections and your time starts now!
04:52Good luck!
04:53Good luck!
04:54Go for it!
04:55Good luck!
04:56All the very best!
04:57Oh la la!
04:58Enjoy the process, it's the last time we'll ever do this.
05:01In eight hours, the designers will be fitting their collection to real-life models for the very first time.
05:07Seeing people wearing a garment that I have designed, I can't think of anything more amazing.
05:13Oh gosh, I'm not going to get emotional.
05:16We're not doing tears today.
05:18The designers need to create two party wear looks for men or women suitable for the festive season.
05:25I've got a lot of patterns with me because I don't know what I'm making.
05:28I don't know what I'm doing first.
05:30I don't know what I'm doing.
05:31Every emotions go from my mind right now.
05:33Excited, nervous, anxious.
05:35It is the final, so I've got to finish this on a high.
05:39This is how it starts.
05:41A piece of paper.
05:43It's the grand final.
05:45If ever there is a time for our designers to rise to the occasion, it's now!
05:51Anna, the festive season is just around the corner.
05:54Busiest shopping time of the year.
05:57What are your customers looking for when it comes to party wear?
06:00People love to dress up at Christmas time, sequins.
06:04People love the traditional, kind of the black, the silvers, but they'll go for colour as well.
06:09I'm looking for something gold, but that looks interesting.
06:12That looks really cool.
06:14I am looking for something that other retailers won't be selling.
06:18Something that our customers are just going to want to have, want to own and feel fantastic in.
06:23100%.
06:24It's got to be memorable.
06:25More than anything else, it has to make the man or woman who's wearing it feel special.
06:31Fabric can make or break a dress.
06:33This is going to hang really nicely over the body.
06:36It's a statement fabric, but without being too showy and in your face.
06:41Bella, what difficulties do you think our designers could run into?
06:45Well, the main thing is just to keep in touch with their vision and their identity,
06:50because they are designing a capsule that potentially could be in M&S,
06:56but they are also designing, this is their first of their life's work,
07:01so they can't, they mustn't lose that.
07:03That's a big statement.
07:04It is, it's good though.
07:05They have to stay true to who they are.
07:08The minute they go, okay, what's the secret magic formula for that M&S dress?
07:14Yeah.
07:15I think they suddenly become in danger of losing their way a little bit.
07:18People love seeing someone's new idea and buying into that, but they've got a deadline
07:24and it's like how to keep from freaking out, really.
07:28I want to see them with a plan.
07:31If any of them get distracted by, oh, maybe I should have done that, that's a disaster.
07:38I wish we could do like five looks.
07:41There's a dress that I've designed here, which has a big bell sleeve.
07:45I'm probably not going to do these ones because I've drawn a trouser.
07:47I don't think today is the day to attempt it for the first time.
07:50So I'm probably just deciding between these four dresses and these four designs.
07:55Yeah, I'm struggling.
07:59Hello, hello.
08:00Hello, hi.
08:01How are you feeling?
08:03Nervous.
08:04Katie, meet Bella. Bella, Katie.
08:06Katie.
08:07Good to meet you.
08:08And you.
08:09You've got a lot on your board.
08:10Yep.
08:11The theme of my idea is Boxing Day Night Out because that's every year me and my friends
08:16in the calendar is the night that you go out with the girls.
08:19So I've gone with more dresses.
08:20There are some trousers drawn on there, but I probably won't do them.
08:24I mean, if I could give you any advice, I would say decide what you want to do.
08:29Don't wait for inspiration or any of those things.
08:32Okay.
08:33Choose the two you're going for and take all of the others off there.
08:36Yeah.
08:37And remember what you're really good at.
08:38Yeah.
08:39And remember what you're confident in.
08:40Yeah.
08:41And you've done some incredible designs through this competition.
08:43Oh, nobody wants to see that.
08:46At 24, science graduate Katie is the youngest of our finalists.
08:51Please.
08:52I've worked really, really hard, so to get into the final is an amazing reward.
08:56Known for her feminine style, Katie has turned heads.
09:00Katie, I love this.
09:01You have literally put your kind of personality into it.
09:05Perfect.
09:06I'm really a big fan of this.
09:08I could really see it as part of the Rosie brand.
09:10And proved that she could be a strong team leader.
09:13Feeling good.
09:14Aren't you, team?
09:15Yeah, yeah.
09:16Don't think about that.
09:17That doesn't matter.
09:18You can't change it now.
09:19Get it finished.
09:20And the team safely through to next week is Katie's team.
09:23Honestly, the hardest thing I've ever done.
09:25I've really had to push myself.
09:27And I'm here now, so it proves you've got to just persevere with things.
09:31At times, indecision.
09:33Oh, I don't know what I want.
09:34Do you reckon the green or the pattern?
09:36And a lack of confidence.
09:38I don't know what I'm doing.
09:39I'm doing a really bad job.
09:41It's not going well.
09:42Has got in her way.
09:44My daughter Gigi would love to wear something like that, but she's four.
09:47I think it just needs a little bit more research and understanding.
09:51The designer in last place, Katie.
09:54But her resilience.
09:55Right, this should be the good stuff.
09:57Has always shone through.
09:59It's fantastic for your first menswear design to come out like this.
10:03It's really strong.
10:04Getting this job and being able to work alongside other fashion designers would be amazing.
10:08It's just great validity that I can do this.
10:11I am talented.
10:12I am a good designer.
10:15I'm just trialing things right now.
10:20I don't know.
10:21I'm always indecisive.
10:22There's too much creative rein.
10:24But I need to not overthink it.
10:26Katie.
10:27Sometimes she lacks the vision.
10:29She's not quite sure what it is she's designing.
10:31I do think some of her designs, she's winged it a little bit.
10:34Mm.
10:35And she's ended up with a garment.
10:37Sometimes something really lovely.
10:38Yeah.
10:39But at the time it's not at all.
10:40I don't know what I'm doing honestly.
10:41I don't know what I'm doing honestly.
10:43I don't know what I'm doing honestly.
10:45Dress the Nation brought to you by M&S.
10:46Welcome back to Dress The Nation brought to you by M&S.
11:14Welcome back to Dress the Nation, where with so much at stake, Katie has been struggling
11:18to settle on her designs for the catwalk.
11:21I am doing the dress I've always said I was going to do.
11:25But after a little nudge from the experts, she's finally decided on her two festive outfits.
11:31She'll make a black maxi dress with balloon sleeves and a cut-out detail on the waist,
11:37and a silver mini dress with bell sleeves and a coal neckline at the back.
11:43When you have a really deep cowl back, like I'm doing, the only issue is you can never
11:47really get it that tight around the body.
11:49To overcome that, I'm thinking of putting some little strings that will come from the
11:55inside seam and tie here.
11:59Katie has now got a dress on the mannequin.
12:01You know, it's quite impressive, I'm talking to her, and then ten minutes later she's got
12:06like a dress on the stands.
12:08It feels more like I've got a plan now, I'm liking how this has come together.
12:11I'm feeling good, I'm feeling better.
12:13I think I feel good.
12:14Ask me in a few hours, I might not.
12:18Hello Sandeep.
12:19Hello.
12:20I've got a dancing partner.
12:21Boom.
12:22Here he is.
12:23Nice.
12:24Smooth.
12:25Hi Sandeep.
12:26Hi Sandeep.
12:27So who's this dress for?
12:28Is it a dress?
12:29Is that what we're making?
12:30Yeah, we're making two dresses, both for me.
12:31I am the inspo, yeah.
12:34Going for practical with a hint of sexy, Sandeep has designed two party wear dresses.
12:39Her green sleeveless mini dress will have a fitted bodice and then some volume from the
12:44hips down and all important pockets.
12:47Her second dress will be in lilac and will have short puffy sleeves, a cut out back and
12:52the paw cleverly positioned to hide the bra strap.
12:57The sleeved one you'll wear out because it's cold.
13:00The sleeveless is like if you've got people coming round, you're having a little house
13:04party, it's pretty warm.
13:06I love that you're always thinking of the weather though.
13:09There's no way to start thinking about that.
13:11I'll think first.
13:12Think about the weather after.
13:17In my clothing, I want people to be able to feel safe and free and to be able to be
13:23themselves.
13:24And I think that's what this collection shows.
13:26It's where I personally am at.
13:28It's like, I want to look beautiful and elegant, a little bit sexy.
13:33I've pushed my boundaries, but not in a way that I would feel uncomfortable doing so.
13:38So I can still have little cut outs, but I can wear a bra and feel supported.
13:42And then we've got Sandeep.
13:43There's a definite style through a lot of her work, a lot more simplistic, but she
13:47always seems to finish the garment in a very refined, like a beautiful way.
13:51I'm really impressed with her.
13:53I really am impressed.
13:54She's shown that she's capable of something really quite special.
13:58Katie and Sandeep have designed dresses for their festive occasion wear, but David has
14:03gone for something a little different.
14:05My whole, like, theme behind this is a power Christmas couple go to a Christmas ball.
14:10David has designed his and her suits with the men's incorporating pencil trousers and
14:15the women's a pencil skirt.
14:17Both designs will have a complex crossover style jacket where the two halves overlap in
14:22a somewhat unconventional style.
14:24Precise placement of the buttons is key for the jackets to fit perfectly.
14:29Don't stop.
14:30Don't look up.
14:31Keep going.
14:32I am your biggest cheerleader.
14:34We've got it going on.
14:35You can do this.
14:36I know it.
14:37Are you feeling confident?
14:38I'm confident with the whole look.
14:39Right.
14:40I was just finishing it.
14:42I was like, I think I bit off a bit more than I can chew.
14:45Yeah.
14:46But I want to get the final look.
14:47You know, that's...
14:48Yes.
14:49That's the...
14:50My bill on end, like the end of this now, right now.
14:51It's just to get the final look so that the judges can see that I've got an idea.
14:55Are you feeling pretty confident at this stage in the competition?
14:59Oh, no.
15:00It's the finale, isn't it?
15:01So...
15:02Yeah, it's the finale.
15:03Darn right, it's the finale.
15:04I feel confident in myself as in, like, I know what I do.
15:06I know I can do this.
15:07Yeah.
15:08It's not a good job and everything, but just the...
15:10Time.
15:11Yeah.
15:12Was that a sign to move on?
15:13No, no, no.
15:14I don't hear, do you?
15:16I will.
15:17I'm out of here.
15:18It's just a figment of your imagination.
15:20Goodbye.
15:22Bye.
15:27Alright, designers, don't wish to panic here, but you're halfway through the challenge.
15:31That means you've got four hours left.
15:34It's quite a while, actually.
15:36Yeah, actually.
15:37Shall we get a top cut?
15:38Yeah.
15:41David has almost completed his women's jacket, and he's now working on his menswear version,
15:46which has a complex crossover style.
15:50I'm putting the back seam together right now.
15:52Done the sleeves.
15:53I'm trying to get the easy parts of the jacket put together before I then do the front.
15:59It's where most of the details got in.
16:02Two tailored jackets in eight hours.
16:04Yeah.
16:05That was super ambitious.
16:09Keep breathing, keep going.
16:10Yeah, yeah.
16:11You'll be fine.
16:12You're like the coolest, calmest person there is anyway, so there's no stress.
16:16Yeah.
16:17Yeah.
16:18Yeah.
16:19Yeah.
16:20Yeah.
16:21Yeah.
16:22Yeah.
16:23Yeah.
16:24The competition has pushed me because I've done a lot of things that I've never done before,
16:28so it made me believe more in myself.
16:30As a menswear lover, the early weeks threw him test after test.
16:34Believe it or not, this is my first dress I'm actually making in my life.
16:39But very quickly, he proved that his personal style.
16:42How can I elevate it, make it more cool streetwise, you know?
16:46Will always shine through.
16:48It's got David's style and handwriting all over.
16:51Yeah.
16:52Super cool.
16:53Your signature style once again.
16:55I'm pretty sure any nine or ten year old would love to wear it, so welcome.
17:00Success earned him the team leader position almost every week.
17:05The winner of the Statement Peace Challenge is David.
17:09And after a close call.
17:11The designer leading the competition is Maria.
17:15I'm sorry.
17:17He finally got his chance.
17:20It's menswear week.
17:21Look at the sigh of relief on David's face.
17:23This is my week.
17:26To show he's got what it takes.
17:28Perfect.
17:29Very clean.
17:30It's just perfect.
17:31It's great just to see you in your calm, cool, casual self and just producing an amazing
17:36garment.
17:37Well done.
17:38Thank you very much.
17:39Our winner of the challenge, designing a jacket for Ian Wright, is David.
17:45This job will change my life.
17:48Just give me that stamp of approval that, yeah, you are on the right path.
17:52Like you're doing the right thing.
17:53I've done the same lining for the top for this jacket as the other jacket, so it's a bit
18:01of a his and hers kind of thing.
18:03I like, like, couples going out trying to look good together, you know?
18:07What do you think of David so far?
18:09Has it impressed you?
18:10I like the concept, like his power couple.
18:13Yeah.
18:14So already he's investing in, like, how these people, like, walk into a room.
18:20Right now, I just need to put the lining on.
18:23I'm still a bit worried about time, but I'm liking the actual outcome so far.
18:28Designers, you've got just three hours left.
18:31That's 180 minutes.
18:34That is 10,800 seconds.
18:38Come on.
18:41Quick maths.
18:43Let's go, let's go.
18:46Having finally settled on her designs and already got one dress well underway, Katie is
18:52now working on her second dress, a maxi dress with balloon sleeves and cut-out midriff.
18:57I'm just trying to drape the dress, but I just don't know how to sort the bottom.
19:02I just can't seem to figure it out.
19:04And I'm getting really confused.
19:07So how are you feeling?
19:08Are you feeling confident?
19:09No, I'm feeling really stressed, because I can't figure out this dress.
19:13I feel like positive party vibes is needed here.
19:16Yes.
19:17You're in the final.
19:18You're here for a reason.
19:19Yeah.
19:20We've already got one gorgeous frock, and we're about to make another.
19:23That's all I'm going to say.
19:24It is a final.
19:25You need to make a decision, don't you?
19:26Pretty sharpish, because you've got to impress the judges, because they're all coming.
19:29And it's got to go down a catwalk.
19:30It's not like when we're stood in the studio and only you guys have to see it.
19:34Babe, you know what you're doing.
19:35Yeah, yeah.
19:36You wouldn't be here otherwise.
19:37Yeah.
19:38Exactly.
19:39Yes.
19:40Confident.
19:42And speedy.
19:44Okay, I think I can do it.
19:49Hello.
19:50Hi.
19:51Don't stop.
19:52I know you're very, very close now, aren't you?
19:55Yeah.
19:56How are you doing?
19:57I'm doing good.
19:58I was going to say quietly confident, but I don't want to jinx it.
20:01Oh, I know.
20:02I love that.
20:03You ride that out, because I think that's going to be the secret to success.
20:08Have you enjoyed it?
20:09I've really enjoyed this challenge.
20:11It's been so fun to just see the dresses, like, shaping up and coming to life.
20:14What do you think you've learned over the process of it all?
20:17So much about myself, how I can be resilient and take feedback, and I'm actually kind of a talented designer.
20:24Yeah, you are.
20:25Yeah, you are.
20:26Yeah, you are.
20:28Thank you, yeah.
20:29I never used to call myself a fashion designer, but now I feel like I can give myself that label, which is quite nice.
20:36Fabric shop owner Sandeep has had a series of ups and downs.
20:41This competition is probably the best thing that I've ever done, but it's been a rollercoaster.
20:46To feedback out of the gate.
20:49This, to me, just looks a little bit sad.
20:52Oh, I don't want you to cry, because I love what you're wearing.
20:55What are you saying?
20:56Meant that she lost her confidence.
20:58Oh, gosh.
20:59And she's already, like, talking herself out of it that I might be going home.
21:04Don't be worried.
21:05Bye.
21:06My colour palette is just all wrong.
21:07Looking back to the first week, I feel like I was a very much different person.
21:11Ta-da!
21:12Get your sunglasses out.
21:13She's blinding.
21:14I feel like I'm stronger, more resilient.
21:17Oh, my God, we've got this.
21:19I've realised I have a real drive as well for this.
21:22I really want to win.
21:23But once she conquered her fears...
21:25Believe in yourself more.
21:27Please.
21:28Let's do it.
21:29I've got this.
21:30She was able to prove...
21:31She's looking gorgeous.
21:32Oh, thank you.
21:33Well done.
21:34Time and time again.
21:36You seem like you've got loads of confidence back.
21:38I have.
21:39The joy is just, like, within me.
21:40That she has the skills.
21:41That is so impressive.
21:43And the talent.
21:44These guys absolutely love it.
21:46You've done a really good job this week.
21:47Well done.
21:49To be ready of the job.
21:50It would mean the world to have that job.
21:53If dreams could be as big as this, this is what it would be.
21:57It would be incredible.
21:59So this is my green dress.
22:04My sleeveless one.
22:06Quite, like, swishy.
22:08And check this out.
22:10It's got pockets.
22:15That's a snazzy dress, isn't it?
22:17Designers, you've got 30 minutes remaining.
22:20And then it's party time.
22:22Yes.
22:23Come on, everyone.
22:25There's no time for party fun.
22:27I'm too stressed.
22:29At the end of the challenge, the designers need to have their outfits ready to fit to their models.
22:34I've speedily put together some trousers.
22:37There's no details in them.
22:38No pockets.
22:39Cutting corners.
22:40But, you know, this is just like a sample, isn't it?
22:43We need to develop this.
22:44So I'm just going to give you something to see, and then we can talk about it later.
22:47I've made them a Japanese knot bag in the matching fabric to one of the dresses.
22:52And now I'm making a hair bow to match one of the looks.
22:54There's a lot to do still.
22:57I probably just need to pick up the paint.
22:59Cute.
23:00They'll be able to make tweaks during the fittings, but as always, they have to have something
23:06on the mannequin when the time is up.
23:08Shoulders are too wide to go like that.
23:11I don't want to rip it.
23:13I kind of can't believe, like, this is it.
23:15The last time we're sewing in this room.
23:16So weird.
23:17I'm just a bit concerned about time at the minute.
23:20Like, I don't know if I have enough of it.
23:22Designers, you've got just ten minutes left.
23:25That's all you've got.
23:26That's it.
23:27End of the series.
23:28Ten minutes remaining.
23:30Come on!
23:31Definitely bit enough more than I can chew.
23:33Well, chew faster.
23:35Come on, guys.
23:36These are super long.
23:37I make them long, so when he comes in, I can take them up.
23:38Is that going to fit?
23:39I have something on the mannequin.
23:40It just needs to be tighter.
23:41A lot tighter, but it's coming together.
23:42You've got just one minute length, everyone!
23:43One minute to go!
23:44Come on.
23:45Come on.
23:46She's dressed.
23:47She is dressed.
23:48She is dressed.
23:49I do have dresses on the mannequin.
23:51Five, four, three, two, one!
23:53Five...
23:54Five, four, three, two, one!
23:56That is it!
23:59Time is up.
24:00Designers, step away from your mannequins, please.
24:07I'm exhausted, she can't even function.
24:20She can't even function I'm ready to show what I've made. I don't know. I have real
24:26Maximations. I just don't know what to think until I see them on the model. I think I'll be a bit restless
24:33Done
24:34Finished I am exhausted, but happy to be interesting. It's gonna be fun. I've never done a catwalk before I'm looking forward to it
24:44That challenge was really fun. I enjoyed it. I think it's probably the most enjoyable
24:48But it was really nice to see the dress has come to life. I really didn't feel any pressure today. I can do this
24:56I've got this I can win
24:59Coming up the designers face their final interview. Why do you want to work at M&S um me?
25:06Sorry, let me try that again. What's the question again? And the dream catwalk
25:11It's amazing
25:14Before one will be given the opportunity of a lifetime the winner of M&S dress the nation is
25:33Dress the nation brought to you by M&S
25:41Welcome back to dress the nation with the catwalk awaiting the designers have face been invited here to M&S HQ the very place
26:00They hope that they'll soon be working
26:03They're about to undergo the daunting but perhaps most crucial part of the process the face-to-face interview
26:09With a selection of the M&S experts which will guide the final decision
26:18It would be an amazing life experience getting this job to be able to get industry experience for one of the biggest retailers on the high street
26:26Would be incredible because when I came out of university
26:29I was applying for creative jobs and obviously everybody just bashed me because I had a degree in science
26:34I didn't go to fashion school so I want to prove to myself if you want to change your career and you can
26:42You just have to work really hard because I have worked really hard
26:48This job will change my life because it will give me stability
26:51I've been in waves up and down like in and out of jobs and coming off from a dance career into
26:57Into something else creative. It's like it's just natural. Hello. How are you doing?
27:01How are you doing?
27:02Being a designer. It feels like it's something that I should be doing it with the right people and
27:07M&S seems to be the right place for me. How are you feeling? Just a bit like nervous
27:13Walking into M&S HQ wondering which floor I'll be working on and where I'll be working and who I'll be working with
27:19There's just so much like going on and I just love to rock up there and be like, I'm at work
27:24I know we all have an equal chance, but it's hard because I am about to meet with the leading experts in their field
27:33So to be in their presence, it's a little bit overwhelming
27:38You have produced some very commercial designs that have actually been very very well made
27:44But maybe not that new maybe a little bit safe
27:48So how are you going to push yourself to really bring us something really new to the business?
27:54Um, I think that will take me
27:58Sorry, let me try that again
28:01Sorry
28:03Yeah, take your time
28:05I didn't want to go into this competition and
28:09And try and do all the bells and whistles and present you with just a pile of rags
28:13I'd rather lean into my expertise and then as time goes on and I have more time to practice and learn and grow my skills
28:22I'll be able to start pushing boundaries and that's what I'm really looking forward to doing
28:28You have had challenges across all categories of M&S
28:32You don't know where you're going to end up working
28:35Do you have a favourite one? And how versatile are you?
28:45Yes, I have a favourite one. I like going to menswear
28:48That would be my preferred option
28:50But doing this competition has showed me that actually, no, you can do other things
28:54You just need to open your mind and open your eyes up a bit more
28:57And you can see other things and do other things
28:59So you feel like you've learnt to adapt throughout the process?
29:02Yes, yes, definitely. I'm widening my repertoire
29:05So Katie, when was the last time you visited one of our stores and what what do you think?
29:10So the last time I visited one of the Marks and Spencer stores was on my local high street in Southpaw
29:15It's a fairly small store
29:17And this I always I was gonna say always go because I go to the toilets and I appreciate that there's always toilets
29:25That's not what I wanted to say
29:27What am I trying to say? What was the question again?
29:35Season after season our customers are coming in looking for something fresh, new, exciting, stimulating, really driving innovation
29:44How do you think you will bring that to our customer?
29:48How would I do that?
29:49My experience in a fabric shop means that I'm buying for seasons ahead
29:56So I'm always thinking about what's coming up rather than what's in other stores right now
30:02Nothing wrong with that
30:02I think I just have a really good awareness of key trends and what women want to wear and a younger audience to bring to the business
30:11Absolutely
30:12So I'll keep my ear to the street
30:13I'll keep looking, you know, seeing what people are doing
30:16And I like to travel a lot as well
30:18So then I see what they're wearing in their country and then bring it back here and say that maybe let's do that
30:22Like to see what's like, you know, what's coming in that's new and that's how I've been out to kind of like keep my keep myself relevant
30:28And then I'll interject that into what I'm doing and what I make
30:32Having a role as an M&S designer is a really really highly coveted role
30:37Yeah
30:38What does this mean to you and what do you think you can bring to that position if you're lucky enough to get that?
30:44It means a lot to me if I could tell myself four years ago who just graduated uni with a neuroscience degree
30:50But like wasn't doing what I really wanted to do
30:52She'd be like, oh my goodness me that is just the best news ever because I feel as though
30:58People are like, well, why? Why? Why you? You know, you haven't proven yourself through studying
31:03I've done it through my own hard work
31:04So I think I've got more of that fight in me
31:08It'll mean a lot
31:09It's like a big stamp of like approval that you're on the right path
31:13You are doing the right thing like this is what you're meant to be doing now
31:16I don't want to get emotional, but this is my like one route into entering this world
31:21This really does mean the world to me because clothing isn't just about the things you wear on your skin
31:26It's about how you show up in the world and who you are and to be able to
31:30influence the way someone feels about themselves is there a bigger honor than that your emotion just comes through in a way that you are
31:38Clearly so so committed and passionate to your craft and that's really admirable to see
31:44Thanks so much sandy. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thanks for coming. Thank you so much. Thank you. Bye
31:50Bye
31:54Sandy this is clearly a life-changing kind of opportunity
31:58She's committed and passionate and would go above and beyond
32:04If she was to get this position to really make it work emotional intelligence as well
32:09Yeah, I think there's a calm yeah, nice aura so katie. I mean obviously a passion comes through
32:15Happy really smiley one loves everybody would want to be working around her. She has a little sponge
32:24She's probably the wild card coming in the yeah the three of them
32:28david
32:29Was surprised how nervous he was actually yeah today probably the most nervous out of the three does it
32:35Is it because it means the most to him? Do you know? I quite liked it because you showed to me that he really really was
32:41Yeah
32:42Out of the three of them in terms of being able to think you know two three seasons out
32:47Having a clear vision he's definitely expressed that more than the others were I agree
32:52I think the only thing is coming into the business
32:55It's not just men's work to other things. Yeah, yeah, yeah
32:57Is he that adaptable on women's? Yeah, I mean lingerie
33:00Women's I'd have a bigger question. Yeah between the three of them. It's going to be a really hard choice
33:04So I'm not sure if there's an outright front runner. They all bring something different. We have got a tough decision
33:23Dress the nation brought to you by M&S
33:26Welcome back to dress the nation where some familiar faces are the first to arrive for the designers biggest showcase of the competition
33:48The catwalk
33:50Backstage the designers have one final chance to make some alterations on their models
33:56As everything has to be perfect if they want to stay in the running for the M&S job
34:02Can you stick your arms and I'll do the neck for you
34:05Oh, yes, I love it. It's so funny. I've not seen it on yet. If you face me
34:10If it's good, okay enough voices all right. Yeah, it's cool. All right. All right
34:17Looks pretty great. I'm really happy with it. It fits nicely on the shoulders and things
34:26Amidst the guests for tonight's catwalk show are the designers families who have sneaked backstage for some final words of encouragement
34:34Oh
34:38I do have a lot of family and friends that do believe in me
34:41They are so excited by me being in this process, but to them for me to win it would just be incredible
34:46So happy for you, so pleased
34:48I can't believe how far you've gone
34:49I know
34:50You've done absolutely amazing. You've worked so hard
34:54I know I'll be home with you two tomorrow
34:57My parents have been so supportive and I think it would really prove to them it was worth it
35:04It's a big thing to make my mom proud
35:10She's always supported me and she's always helped me through like the tough times and in fashion in general like there's always ups and downs
35:16She's always helped me through the lows and she's always supported me and give me good words of advice. Yeah
35:22You're gonna cry. Don't cry
35:26Hi, Sandy
35:30Oh my god, mommy and daddy
35:32Hi
35:37My family are so proud
35:38I got the sweetest messages this morning from my sisters
35:42Just telling me how proud they are of me. Oh my gosh. It's flown by but you can do it. Yeah
35:49They've just supported me throughout this whole process. I've been very lucky
35:52You've got this far. You did amazing
35:55Thank you
35:56I kind of want to kick you out as well
36:06As well as friends family and our former designers
36:09It's really exciting
36:11I love seeing my garment born on an actual human
36:15The designers final collections will be paraded in front of the all-important marks and spencer experts
36:23So we'll do this one. I'm really sorry if that's too tight
36:26And the guest experts from today's challenge
36:32She'd like the length as well actually
36:34Cool we're good. We're good to go man. Yeah, thank you very much
36:38Thank you very much
36:40Thank you all so much for being here our designers have all been working tirelessly
37:08For the last six weeks and it all comes down to this their final party work collection
37:18One of which one of which will appear and be on sale online and in selected marks and spencer stores up and down this great nation
37:28It really is going to be amazing and first up. It's sandy
37:38Put in herself front and center as the customer sandeep has designed a collection, which is elegant with a bit of sexy
37:47Amazing I can't believe it
37:59She looks incredible
38:03Oh wow
38:05It's really, really, really good
38:17It's really, really, really good
38:19It's beautiful
38:21It's mind blowing
38:23It's mind blowing
38:33Look at that
38:35Oh, yes
38:41So next up it's david's collection
38:45Aiming for a collection that wouldn't look out of place on a power couple at a christmas ball
38:53David has designed his and hers tailored suits
38:57I could not expect that
38:59I could not expect that
39:01I could not expect that
39:03No, I could not
39:05It's amazing
39:07It's amazing
39:13It's amazing
39:27I like the length of the deck in that one
39:29Yeah
39:31Yeah
39:33Oh my god
39:39I'm in my life
39:41I'm in my life
39:42I'm in my life
39:43Woo
39:44Baby
39:45Congratulations
39:46Congratulations
39:47Last but not least
39:49It's Katie
39:51CHEERING
39:53Good luck
39:55CHEERING
39:57CHEERING
40:01With plenty of designs to choose from, Katie settled on a collection featuring a mini and maxi dress to take centre stage on a festive girls' night home
40:13CHEERING
40:15That was fun, guys
40:23Oh, you're really emotional
40:25CHEERING
40:27I love the accessories
40:39I'm so happy it all came together
40:51Thank you
40:53The designers have done all they can
40:55Their collections are now on display for all to see
40:59I like what she's done with like different panels
41:01Yeah
41:02So a panel for the arm
41:03And then a central
41:04That's where it fits to our road, isn't it?
41:05Exactly
41:06But it's down to the M&S experts to decide once and for all who will become Marks & Spencer's next designer
41:13Sandeep had a rocky start
41:15She does appear to have gotten better each and every week
41:17Are you seeing that confidence shine through in her design?
41:21I certainly am
41:23She has been slightly up and down as you say through the different challenges
41:25But you can see the confidence in her and you can see it in the designs
41:29One thing she does have to be able to do is to be able to handle criticism in every which way
41:37I know it's not very nice, but actually that is the real world
41:41It doesn't really matter that she gets upset or cries
41:43What matters is how she comes back from that
41:47And she is coming back from that
41:49And it shows that she could get used to that
41:52I think Sandeep has accomplished so much in these two dresses
41:59These are beautiful occasion dresses
42:02The detail on the back, the beautiful bow, the execution of those buttons, the diamante detail
42:07And then I'm loving the one on the right here
42:11It's got kind of Vivienne Westwood vibes
42:13Feminine, flattering, absolutely fantastic
42:17David's been the lead designer more than anybody else
42:21Everything he's done has got something
42:24It's like designer wear
42:27It's like it's in him and he's got all these ideas
42:31You feel like you're just seeing the beginning of something
42:34I can imagine him in men's wear
42:36I can imagine him in women's wear
42:38I think he could do all of it
42:40I love the fact that David has really thought about doing a men's outfit and a women's outfit
42:45I love the way that he has thought about design details that marry across the two
42:51So the one button detail, the collar focus
42:53They came down the catwalk looking amazing, looking like a really fab pair
42:57I think it was unexpected that he was going to do a male and female
43:01Both have quite good symmetry which I think is important
43:04Fully lined, functional pockets, elasticated waists
43:07So there's a lot in the garments
43:09Once you look at them in a bit more detail, fantastic
43:12Let's talk about Kirti
43:13When she started the competition she was really energetic
43:16She knew exactly what she wanted to design
43:18And when she designed those designs they were awesome
43:21What she's shown to me is that she's willing to learn
43:24And again that's something that we will always be looking for
43:27Because fashion changes
43:29I just think it's fantastic that she's listening to feedback
43:32She's acting on it
43:33Yeah
43:34That can only be a good thing
43:35Her silver dress looks like if Joan of Arc was going to Studio 54
43:40That's what she'd be rocking on the night out
43:42Yeah
43:43Like all she needs is a sword that can fit in that little handbag and she'll be away
43:47I sometimes think that less is more
43:51If you're designing beautiful evening or occasion wear
43:54I think she's used fabulous fabrics
43:57Really sensational
43:58Well done, Katie
43:59They looked great on the catwalk
44:01But actually I think they'll photograph really well
44:03Instagram ready
44:04They're going to really grab people's attention
44:06I think they're really commercial and fun
44:09I think it's safe to say that our three designers have brought loads of positives
44:16I think it's fantastic
44:17You know I look at these three candidates
44:19And I think we're in a position now
44:20We could probably employ any of those three
44:22It's really close
44:23But yeah, I think we're just getting there with a decision now
44:27We have absolutely loved getting to know each and every one of you over this past six weeks
44:42And in our eyes you are all superstars
44:45But only one of you will become M&S's next fashion designer
44:49The winner of M&S Dress the Nation is
45:04David!
45:16David!
45:17David!
45:18David!
45:19David!
45:20David!
45:21David!
45:22David!
45:23David!
45:24David!
45:25David!
45:26Yeah, I just don't know what to say
45:28I literally have lost four words
45:42I've lost for work. I feel super excited. I'm ready to get like this collection out. It's too much. It's amazing
45:52I am so happy for him. Oh my gosh. It's gonna do so many amazing things
45:59I knew he was gonna be in the final and to win. I'm really not surprised
46:05He's got technical expertise
46:07He's just a natural designer to have found somebody like David. It's fantastic
46:15I'm the winner of destination, and I'm gonna be making some cool garments for M&S, and I am so happy and excited
46:22Oh
46:39My god, this is crazy
46:42Then I would have thought it was gonna be it's absolutely amazing seen it finished
46:46We had like two meetings. We went through loads of like small little details that I couldn't do because of my time restraints
46:52But the final look still looks like what I wanted
