00:00Dress the Nation, brought to you by M&S.
00:11Ten of Britain's best amateur designers are about to undertake the biggest job interview of their lives.
00:20Competing to become a fashion designer at Britain's most loved fashion retailer, Marks & Spencer.
00:26And with 32 million customers through their doors and 310 million clothing items sold in the past year, it won't be a job for the faint-hearted.
00:39They are now looking for a new designer, someone who can create clothes that millions of people will want to buy.
00:47It's about finding somebody that's passionate for clothing and passionate about UK fashion.
00:52We want somebody to think slightly outside of the box and bring designs to M&S that we haven't seen before.
00:59We really want to go and find the next big thing, and I just have a really good feeling that we're going to find somebody very special.
01:06Over six weeks, our ten designers will work individually and in teams.
01:11That should be a little bit bigger. Maybe, yeah.
01:13To create designs worthy of a place in high street windows.
01:18I've set myself up to such a complicated design.
01:21Once it's long, they'll look more elegant.
01:23Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
01:24They're making silly mistakes now.
01:26No!
01:28Alright, mannequin, it's you and me.
01:32That's a brave move.
01:34The nation's not ready for what's about to come.
01:36Alright, designers, let's go!
01:38Move faster!
01:39Move faster!
01:42They'll be under the scrutiny of our guest experts.
01:45This is something that I think would be timeless.
01:48Very chic.
01:49The simplicity of it is beautiful.
01:51That pops at me, it stands out.
01:54Real style.
01:56And the Marks & Spencer experts.
01:58It's just beautifully finished.
02:00Really impressed with actually how you brought it together.
02:02Only one will win this life-changing prize.
02:07The winner of M&S Dress the Nation is...
02:10A job to dress the nation.
02:12Hello, everyone.
02:26Welcome to Dress the Nation.
02:28The search for the next big thing in fashion has officially begun.
02:33Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go!
02:35A girl like me, who never went to fashion school, who just loved sewing and never had a break.
02:42This is a break that I needed.
02:45For one of you, there's a huge prize.
02:47A once in a lifetime chance to become a fashion designer for Britain's best loved retailer, Marks & Spencer.
02:54Woo!
02:56So, I work in finance.
02:58I'd absolutely love that 45 beginner career that ultimately I wished I'd started when I was 20.
03:06Your winning designs will go on sale in stores up and down Great Britain.
03:11So, essentially, you are dressing the nation.
03:14Cool.
03:15This week we are kicking things off with women's wear.
03:18So, please welcome the director of women's wear at M&S, Maddie Evans.
03:22And someone we're going to see a lot of, marketing director for clothing, Anna Breathwet.
03:33Completing our line-up, get ready to spice up your summer wardrobe.
03:38Please welcome, Mel B!
03:40Yes, Mel B!
03:44I think I think, ah, hello.
03:47Really, really exciting.
03:48I was a massive Spice Girls fan.
03:50I still don't think the star-struck mess is on Kenya.
03:53I'm still a little country boy at heart.
03:55Now, Mel, I mean, you have wore some iconic outfits over the years.
04:01Tell me what you want, what you really, really want from our designer.
04:05OK, because it's women's wear, you know, I want it to be a staple of every woman's wardrobe.
04:11The summer dress.
04:14I live in leopard print.
04:16I like bold, I like statements.
04:18So, we want to see something that really expresses your individual style.
04:22Really let your creative juices flow and give us something bold and confident.
04:26At M&S, it is all about pushing boundaries.
04:29So, we really, really, really want to see your personalities on those mannequins at the end of this four hours.
04:36So, just go for it. Make a lasting impression and just make sure that it's for the right reasons.
04:40I feel nervous for you.
04:42Yeah, me too.
04:44So, good luck to you all.
04:47Designers, you have four hours to impress with your dress and your time starts now!
04:55Good luck!
04:56Having pre-prepared some design ideas, the designers have just four hours to make a summer dress that showcases their personal style while hitting the bold statement brief.
05:09The experts will then judge their finished garments and rank them from 10th to first place.
05:15Do I just go with the first one I see?
05:18Oh, but this is cute. Oh, OK, I'm debating.
05:22Is this wedding? Is it wedding?
05:23If you get the fabric choice wrong, then it just...
05:26You're better off thinking of the right one, aren't you?
05:29I'm the stick of this.
05:33I am the queen of dresses, so this challenge is perfect for me.
05:36I wear dresses every day, so, yeah, it's a dream project.
05:42I used to work as an estate agent and I started buying fabric for myself and I just found that I had too much.
05:48So I decided to list some of them online and they sold and it's grown into a whole shop. It's amazing.
05:55I provide fabrics so that other people can sew their own clothes.
05:59But it would be amazing if I could be the one designing things for other people and to just literally dedicate my entire life to this.
06:06Are you, Sandeep? Hello.
06:09How are you getting on? Good.
06:10Yeah, I'm just... I'm in the moment. I'm feeling good.
06:13Although I did have a little bit of a stress when I got into the fabric room.
06:16I was like, do I go for this floral? Do I go for this?
06:19And I was like, the floral was, like, nice, but it wasn't me.
06:23Sandeep is designing a summer wrap dress.
06:26But with the challenge all about being bold, will her choice of a neutral fabric colour be enough to convince the experts she's worthy of a role at M&S?
06:35Sandeep.
06:36I believe she's doing quite a simple wrap dress.
06:39It's quite simple.
06:40I'm interested to see how much of a statement piece it's actually going to be.
06:46It feels like something you might see already in the market.
06:51Yeah, definitely.
06:52And is it really reflecting her personality?
06:54Her style.
06:55Yeah, I agree.
06:58So I'm actually going to be making a zero waste dress, which means that the garment will be made from the entirety of the fabric.
07:05I was trying to find a way to create a dress ethically.
07:10I'm Daylan. I'm 30. I'm from Zimbabwe, but I have been in London for 10 years.
07:16My mum's always made clothes. Growing up in Zimbabwe, when we didn't have access to buying clothes, she would make us everything.
07:22Watching her be so resourceful, finding materials to create what we need, is definitely something that I've inherited and something that I implement in my own approach to making clothes.
07:33Daylan has designed a sustainable dress, which uses the entirety of the fabric, meaning that nothing is wasted.
07:41I'm hoping that it's going to be quite feminine and hopefully quite cute.
07:46I know you really like this design, don't you?
07:48Yes.
07:49Yeah, I'm just really intrigued.
07:51It's pretty complex in terms of his ambition.
07:54It really is. It really is.
07:55But I think it's answering the brief.
07:57And I've been really impressed just by his demeanour.
08:00Totally.
08:01He's really calm. He feels like he's in complete control.
08:03That's the kind of skill that you do need in an office environment.
08:06Totally.
08:07I think they'll see definitely an attempt to create a product that an M&S customer might not have seen yet.
08:15So I hope they appreciate the ambition.
08:19Designers, that's one hour gone!
08:26I'm trying to work out the individual patterns I'm going to need for the stripes.
08:36Which is a bit of a mish. Do you want them in?
08:39Chris, in terms of answering the brief, it looks like there's a real statement piece coming together.
08:44Absolutely.
08:45And particularly those colours, massive contrast.
08:49Each of the contestants are being immediately judged on both their designs and choice of fabric.
08:55There it is. It's like a big puff sleeve dress here.
08:57Oh, stunning.
08:58But wrong fabric!
08:59No, I think it'll look second that though.
09:01Hopefully.
09:02They need to ensure their personality and style comes through in an end product that could sell out on high streets around the country.
09:09Hi Paul.
09:10Hello.
09:11You're happy with your fabric and stuff, yeah?
09:13It's not the ideal fabric.
09:14Right.
09:15The fabric, I really wanted yellow florals, but...
09:17It's got a touch in there.
09:18There's some yellow in there.
09:19So me and my sister, when we grew up, there was all these yellow flowers in the field on the Scottish coast.
09:24Right, okay.
09:25Shouldn't that be thermal then?
09:29When I was a lot younger, I studied fashion at Central Saint Martins, London, and it was a big culture shock to me and ended up going home.
09:38I felt like I'd failed and I'd never get that opportunity again.
09:42I feel like this time it feels right and I'm a lot wiser and a lot more skilled now than I was back then.
09:48I can't wait to tell my sister.
09:49Me and my sister were mega Space Girls fans.
09:5424-year-old Katie is hoping her puff sleeve maxi dress will open up a new future in fashion.
10:01The one area where I feel like my degree comes in handy is how maths-y sewing is.
10:06Ah, what's your degree in?
10:07There's so much maths involved in sewing.
10:08I did neuroscience, so, like, loads of maths involved.
10:12Smart.
10:13You wouldn't think that talking to me.
10:15I studied a degree in neuroscience.
10:18I did really enjoy it, but I just felt this craving to be creative again.
10:23Hi, Katie.
10:24Hi, Katie.
10:25How are you getting on?
10:26Yeah.
10:27As a neuroscientist, your left side of your brain must be going like the clappers, right?
10:31Yeah.
10:32The creative side.
10:33Yeah.
10:34It's an amazing career change.
10:35Yeah.
10:36I know.
10:37I don't know what my parents thought when I first told them.
10:39I'll tell you what they thought.
10:40What a waste of a degree.
10:41Yes!
10:46It looks beautiful.
10:47Yeah.
10:48It feels very her.
10:50It does.
10:51You can definitely see.
10:52It's a reflection of her style, her colour palette.
10:54Absolutely.
10:55Whether it feels unique enough, I guess we'll see when it comes together.
11:03Excited.
11:04As usual.
11:05I was born to do this, yeah.
11:06It's my passion.
11:07I've always sewn.
11:08Yep.
11:09My name's Julie Watson.
11:10I've been sewing since I was 13 years old.
11:11I got my first sewing machine.
11:12I had a little shop.
11:13It's a tiny little shop.
11:14I do alterations mainly.
11:15I worked for myself for so long.
11:16I think I need to change a career.
11:17I think I can give Marks and Spencers that...
11:18What's that word?
11:19I think I'll give that to them.
11:20It's a bit Princess Diana.
11:21It's a bit Princess Diana-looking dress.
11:22Fitted.
11:23It's a bit fluty at the bottom.
11:24It's supposed to be for my mum, but she's not a size 10.
11:25But if she was, she'd wear this dress.
11:26Julie has opted for one of the more simplistic designs, a plain blue skater dress.
11:27But will her design prove overly simple to be the statement piece the experts are looking
11:40for?
11:41So the design is quite simple.
11:42I think it'd be quite effective.
11:43Everybody's sort of gone a little bit over the top.
11:44Sometimes you don't always want that floral and pattern.
11:45You want something a bit more streamlined.
11:46So I'm going for a plain colour, quite safe, and it would fit in Marks and Spencers.
11:47Fantastic, this one.
11:48Julie.
11:49Julie, it is quite a simple design.
11:50I agree.
11:51Where some people really push the boundaries.
11:52Yeah.
11:53Yeah.
11:54Julie, it's a very simple design.
11:55I think it's a very simple design.
11:56I think it's a very simple design.
11:57I think it's a very simple design.
11:58Will her design prove overly simple to be the statement piece the experts are looking
12:01for?
12:02So the design is quite simple.
12:03I think it'd be quite effective.
12:05Everybody's sort of gone a little bit over the top.
12:07Sometimes you don't always want that floral and pattern.
12:08You want something a bit more streamlined.
12:09So I'm going for a plain colour.
12:11Quite safe.
12:12And it would fit in Marks and Spencers.
12:13Fantastic, this one.
12:14Julie, it is quite a simple design where some people really...
12:15I agree.
12:16Push the boundaries.
12:17Yeah.
12:18Julie has played it slightly safer.
12:19And she's really confident in it.
12:21So I'm looking forward to seeing what her design actually looks like once it's on the mannequin.
12:24I agree.
12:25Nearly finished.
12:26You're really finished?
12:27Yeah.
12:28I'm quite a best machinist, yeah.
12:34Designers!
12:35You're halfway through!
12:37Having already finished her dress in half the time...
12:40It doesn't look very good on mannequin though, does it?
12:43It doesn't look much.
12:44Julie's confidence is slowly turning to crisis.
12:48It doesn't look as nice.
12:50Oh, gosh.
12:51It's a bit more like a nurse's outfit rather than a dress.
12:54So, look, it looks awful.
12:57You'll have to change your mind halfway through for different material.
13:01Sod that, it looks awful.
13:04It's a mess.
13:05It's a mess.
13:06I'm starting again.
13:07Dress the Nation.
13:08Brought to you by M&S.
13:09Dress the Nation.

13:21Dress the Nation.
13:22Brought to you by M&S.
13:24Dress the Nation.
13:25Our ten amateur designers are over halfway through their statement piece challenge.
13:43And, unhappy with her original design, Julie has opted to start again from scratch, but
13:50with two hours remaining, will she be able to make a new dress in time?
13:54I need scuba, scuba.
13:55They've only got white.
13:56It's a lot to do.
13:57Quick decisions.
13:58Let's go on.
13:59What, Julie?
14:00Looks like she's still got her work cut out.
14:01She's essentially making two dresses rather than one.
14:02Wow.
14:03So, yeah, what we're going to end up with, in terms of answering that brief, I'm a little
14:18bit nervous.
14:19If I'm not happy and it's not right, you start again.
14:22Simple as...
14:23I'm not panicking, not yet anyway.
14:26With her dream job on the line, Julie has to ensure her latest attempt stands out,
14:32as she's surrounded by nine other top amateur designers all vying for the same job.
14:38Believe it or not, this is my first dress I'm actually making in my life.
14:42I do streetwear, so the top half I kind of know it will work, but the bottom half I'm
14:46not sure how that's going to drape.
14:48It's going to wing it, you know, and just see what happens at the end.
14:51David's never worked on women's dresses before, has it?
14:53No.
14:54No.
14:55Yeah.
14:56I really like his personal style and I just hope it actually comes through in his design.
15:00Yeah, totally.
15:0121-year-old Ryan is the youngest designer and is driven by his passion to get more accessible
15:08clothing into high street stores.
15:10I think it's important for me, it's important to represent, like, people like me.
15:15On the front the button stands fake, it's used with velcro, and then underneath the tabs on
15:21the waist there's actually hidden buttonholes, so if anyone needs tubing or people wear oxygen,
15:26it's easier to access.
15:28I was born without my forearm and my hand on my left side, so I'd either always had to
15:33alter clothes or just not buy them.
15:36So I've created it so it's adaptable and it's functional, so it caters to people that have
15:42disabilities or people that need that extra function in their clothing.
15:45I love his design in terms of the accessibility.
15:48I agree.
15:49He's taken a chance, he's taken a risk, and we need people like that in M&S.
15:54Across the room, Maria is hoping her fabric will catch the expert's eye and give her a
15:59shot at a job in the world of fashion.
16:02I am super efficient because I usually have one day to make anything because I work four
16:08days a week in another job, so I wanted to design something that was desk to dinner,
16:13can to cornwall, barbecue to, I don't know, bar mitzvah.
16:18Maria, I like the print she's chosen, she's doing brilliantly.
16:21But there's still only half a dress there and there's 40 minutes left.
16:24Very true, very true.
16:28With 40 minutes remaining, hoping her ladies design style shines through is Julie.
16:33This is easy, easy peasy.
16:35Who incredibly is already well on the way to finishing a second dress.
16:40Hi Julie.
16:41Hello love, you alright?
16:42Oh that's nice.
16:43I'm just about finished, this is my second one.
16:45But this is a statement piece too.
16:47It's not looking very statementy at the minute, but I want a bright pink scuba.
16:51Right.
16:52Just to make, because I love pink.
16:53Am I even going to maybe put a pink finish on the bottom?
16:55See the thing is, you've got about 40 minutes left, so you could do a third and have a collection.
16:59Do you think?
17:00Put my make-up on, get a bit of lipstick on, I've got time, haven't I?
17:03Exactly!
17:04First one's in bin.
17:05Why?
17:06Wrong fabric, looks like a nurse's outfit.
17:08Let's have a look.
17:09Oh my God!
17:11Well I'm not going to lie Julie, but when I worked for Bolton Council, this reminds me of the tabard I used to wear.
17:19I already know who's won this challenge.
17:20Who?
17:21Agreed.
17:22I've seen her design.
17:23It's sickening.
17:24We've just over half an hour to go, it seems Dalen is eyeing up his competition.
17:3944 year old fellow Zimbabwean, Tendai.
17:42So when I moved to Sheffield, I couldn't afford to go to fashion school.
17:46So before I turned 40, I turned myself to sew and a job came out with the NHS in their sewing room and I applied.
17:57My love for sewing just grew even bigger, it was just unstoppable.
18:01Tendai's design is a vibrant print in yellow and turquoise, showcasing her love for colour in a bid to hit the bold brief.
18:10I like the bold colours.
18:12Yes.
18:13I just think everybody loves bright clothing.
18:16The Queen is my inspiration.
18:18Yeah.
18:19Her love of bold colours and prints.
18:21I remember watching it when I was young and thinking, this is what I want to be.
18:25You don't seem very nervous, you seem very calm.
18:27I know, because, I mean, God, nervous is not going to get you anyway, just go with it.
18:34Tendai, super interesting this.
18:37She has gone for big bold prints, lots of layers, really original design.
18:42This to me has answered the brief in terms of bring your style to the party, be brave, push the boundaries
18:50and I think that's exactly what she's going to be.
18:53Yes.
18:54All right, everybody, this is your 30-minute call.
18:58Oh, my God.
19:01Arm holes, arm holes, and side seams, oh, my God.
19:08Yeah, I feel like it's now an actual competition,
19:11and if you want to be part of Marks and Spencer's family, you have to bring your game face.
19:16It's feeling like there's a lot at stake now, and I just don't want to let anybody down.
19:21Everyone's chilled.
19:23I am not chilled.
19:25This is gonna be tight.
19:30I should have gone for a pattern, maybe.
19:33Guys!
19:34Don't say three minutes.
19:35You've got five minutes left.
19:36I have no idea what I can do in five minutes, but it's better than no minutes.
19:41I love the design, it's just not finished.
19:43Yeah.
19:44It's not a sewing challenge, it's a design challenge, so you'll be okay.
19:46That's it.
19:47I'm done.
19:48It's got my DNA on this dress house.
19:49Does anyone need any help?
19:50Oh, yeah.
19:51Oh, yeah.
19:52But I'll do the theming, you do something.
19:53Absolutely true.
19:54This is not doing what I want it to do.
19:55I feel like it's too simple.
19:56Are you joking?
19:57I love it.
19:58You've got one minute left.
19:59How's it come together?
20:00Let me tell you that.
20:01Five, four, three, two, one.
20:05Designers, your time is up.
20:06Step away from your mannequins.
20:07You've done it.
20:08Yes.
20:09Well done, everyone.
20:10Awesome.
20:11Oh my God.
20:12If I see that dress, if somebody else has made it, I would have thought, well done you.
20:25But because I make it, I'm very critical of it.
20:28If I make it, I'm very critical of it.
20:31And I'm great.
20:33Oh, yes.
20:34You're great.
20:35You're good.
20:36You're good.
20:37You're good.
20:38What are you doing?
20:39very critical myself it's the first challenge I thought I don't want to go
20:43overboard make a mess of myself and not finish an outfit I'm feeling anxious
20:48yeah I just hope it reflects what I want it to reflect with 10 summer dresses on
20:55their mannequins and family under the microscope it's time to find out exactly
21:00what our experts think of these statement piece designs
21:05Katie I love this that you've really you have literally put your kind of
21:09personality into it I'm in my late 40s my eldest daughter's 25 I could see us both
21:14wherever we're wearing this exact outfit yeah and the sweet spot certainly at
21:19Marks and Spencer's is the mother and the daughter both fighting over in the
21:23closet so you've nailed it yeah ah thank you so much how were you feeling about
21:29your dress you were talking to me too it was second edition this I did a first
21:32one so I started again it is very impressive that you've got through two
21:36dresses for me I think you've played it really safe I think with all your
21:41experience for a big statement dress I think you could have come up with a
21:44design that pushed you more okay one to build thank you well done
21:49whilst this is a really commercial summer dress the brief was very much about
21:54being stand out you know you are filled with personality when you walk in a room
21:58and I think we just expected the design to be a bit bolder and a bit more
22:02confident I think what you're wearing is really bold and beautiful yeah this to
22:07me just looks a little bit sad and that's why she's called scary spice
22:18while Sandeep has missed the mark the experts have been clear on what they're
22:23looking for in the summer dress challenge a clear representation of who the
22:28designers are that Jersey on the top is something that reflects your style which
22:33is super cool thank you very much while ensuring is a bold statement I think for
22:38me I'd like to have seen something a bit more standout is forward-thinking this is
22:44completely adaptive all of the velcro the thought you've put into it honestly I
22:48think you've done such a good job the only thing for me it feels a little bit
22:53dated but always remaining commercially viable one thing I would challenge
22:59commercially is just your skirt insofar as of being able to walk in there and two
23:06designers who the experts seem to think we're hitting all of this for Dayland and
23:10Tendai the brief was very much about making a statement dress really being
23:15bold and reflecting your own personal style and I think you've done a
23:19brilliant brilliant job at that so well done I think you just nailed it
23:22everything about this dress is just exactly what you got told to do but
23:26you've done it in your style I really like it
23:30it definitely pushes what you can do with zero waste what's the zero waste um zero
23:37waste is where you use the entirety of the material right nothing's in the bin
23:42yeah wow I absolutely love this honestly I love this the skill and the thought
23:47that has gone into it the different fabrics I just love the structure it's
23:51completely original it's completely your style I think it's absolutely beautiful
23:56sustainability is at the heart of everything we do and when I looked at the
23:59design originally thought wow if you can nail this in this time that is no mean
24:04feet so really well done I'd love to wear it I'm very flattered thank you so
24:08much
24:09all right designers you've heard the comments let's find out how you've done
24:24Mel Anna and Maddie have now ranked the dresses from last place to the winner of
24:30the first statement piece challenge saw in last place I can reveal that it is
24:37Julie in ninth place Sandy Paul is 8 Chris is 7 David is 6 Ryan 5 and 4 is Maria now
24:54now it's time to reveal the top three designers from the statement piece challenge in third place
25:01Tendai
25:03really well done it was summer personified it was bold it represented your personal style and it's the
25:17perfect summer dress well done thank you in second place Katie I think you should feel so proud of
25:36yourself I mean like I said before I would wear that dress and so would my daughter would be fighting
25:40over it the detail the asymmetrical stuff the three tiers perfect so the winner of the statement piece
25:48challenge is Dylan now you're blushing I'm better than your outfit it was unanimous you know there is so
26:03much skill that went into that just the detailing the pattern design it's beautiful and honestly we
26:09all absolutely loved it so well deserved winner congratulations it's brilliant
26:13well done
26:14coming up on dress the nation the next challenge is the collection teamwork no one talked to me
26:26first be working as a team aren't we turns to tears this is all about making a collection and
26:32and like my just doesn't work and the marks and spencer customers have they say dress no
26:39dress the nation brought to you by M&S
26:55dress the nation brought to you by M&S
27:06welcome back to dress the nation as winners of the statement piece challenge Dylan Katie and
27:17Tendai have been rewarded the role of team leaders for the next challenge Sandy and get to pick their
27:23teams with an odd number of contestants Julie I might go home now if you know 10th place Julie
27:34joins Dylan's team the next challenge is the collection Mel tell us more so I want you to make and design
27:45a mini collection for a summer weekend away and you're responsible for one item each we want to see something
27:52that's really cohesive and with real purpose and meaning so whether that's going on your summer holidays to the beach whether that's a city break really bear that in mind
28:03and just remember all of the best designers in M&S are all part of a team this is about team effort not just you and there's a twist oh it's not just going to be the experts
28:14experts that you're going to have to impress you're also going to have to impress the customer so I think that this is going to be an even more difficult challenge than the previous one but good
28:25luck to you all yeah you will have five hours to bring your collections to life and Vernon's been waiting to say this all day so go on I'm treating you
28:35ready set go
28:38the teams have five hours to create a collection that needs to impress real-life M&S customers their
28:47critique will play heavily into who the M&S experts decide will be leaving the competition to dare
28:55what is the secret to a successful summer collection it's got to feel really versatile so ways that you can
29:02as a customer dress it up dress it down wear it multiple different times it's also got to tell a really
29:08clear story to the customer you need to remember if we take each item and put it on its own does it
29:18look it's got to be standalone and come together teams and I have designed a city break collection
29:24they're using the same colors and materials in multiple items to bond them all together
29:28let's go and smash this so we're thinking beach getaway yeah for the weekend maybe they're going
29:37to like for France Saint-Tropez so what colors are we thinking fabrics things like that I'm thinking
29:43more like neutral sand tones it's very on trend right now team Katie are creating a collection perfect
29:49for the beach with a swimsuit tailored shorts jacket shirt and a cover-up while they're confident their
29:55neutral colors are on trend are they pushing the style boundaries far enough to woe the experts
30:01okay let's do it yeah we've got that yeah yeah the lining will will finish yeah sort of on the on the
30:08thigh the approach that I've taken is being less of a dictator we want to get everyone's personalities
30:15coming across and I think we've actually got that down quite nicely I think our unique interpretations
30:21are going to come across as being quite different
30:23team Dalen have brought their individual flavors to their collection but with a pink and blue two
30:29piece a beige jacket a blue floral print dress and a yellow pink and white evening dress there's a lot of
30:37varying styles so what are the downfalls that could happen in this challenge if they've not really
30:42thought about how they're going to deliver this in a really coherent way how the fabrics talk to each
30:48other and how they complement each other then I think that could certainly set them back everyone's
30:53got to be aligned absolutely for julie this could be her final chance to prove herself as a worthy
31:01candidate for the dream m&s job having come last in the first challenge the judges criticism i've took it
31:08all on board i know exactly where i've gone wrong it's got to be good this today i want to stay in
31:13this competition i'm here for a reason a job at mns for me to win the competition would be absolutely
31:21amazing to be honest see my clothes in mns i think i'd be absolutely gobsmacked got to prove myself i've been
31:29tucked in deep end out of groups got to just push myself stop see how far i can do it julie hello dear
31:36hello how are you i'm all right thank you i'm concentrating i've got a big job ahead of me
31:41what is it you're doing i'm making a jacket are you it's sort of a casual loose jacket not
31:47quite as if it's a bit boxy so you're going to have a really coherent collection yeah hopefully touch wood
31:57i'm really intrigued to see how this one comes together definitely school blazer vibes very old
32:03fashioned i just feel she's lacking some design skill that's my concern yeah
32:11love burnt orange it's very healing color it kind of makes you feel really good yeah okay blush oh
32:18that's gonna look sick yeah we are absolutely smashing this it's interesting to observe the
32:26the different team dynamics there's definitely some you feel like they're working very collaboratively
32:33lots of talking good communication we worked so well together just vibing absolutely we are the five
32:42feeling good yeah aren't you team yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah with david scene a little bit quieter over
32:49yeah they're not coming together yeah yeah at all no one talked to me it's supposed to be working as a
32:56team aren't we are we working as a team
33:02i'm doing the swimming costume and we've gone with this blue because ryan's jacket is actually like a
33:07navy stripe you can't quite tell but i think going with the blue will make the collection look a bit more
33:13cohesive team katie's beachwear collection uses largely neutral tones but they're maintaining
33:19cohesion with the blue of katie's swimsuit complementing the subtle blue stripes of ryan's
33:24fabric are you ryan hello how are you i'm good so what are you working on uh so this is like a new take
33:32on like a lightweight summer jacket how do the pieces all coordinate together so we're going to be
33:36using um in terms of fabrics we've selected very neutral colors because they're very on trend right now
33:41um it comes in the functionality it's you know you can throw it all in a bag yeah go on holiday
33:46don't have to take a suitcase neutrals are massive for the summer yes and it's just perfect like you
33:50say for kind of putting in the suitcase jetting away so i think you've kind of nailed it in terms
33:56of kind of that bit of the brief so that's fantastic i'm definitely doing the trouser in and the top
34:03in this pink denim okay pink yeah okay maria has changed her trousers from blue to pink
34:10meaning sandeep's dress is now the only blue item in the collection there's this print which
34:17i wonder how coherent it's going to feel
34:22i thought marie was doing denim blue it's pink there's no blue sandy
34:27marie was going to sew like a blue pair of trousers and that's why i went down the blue path just to be
34:37cohesive with them the next time i look up no one's serving anything blue you okay sandeep what's wrong
34:44what are you looking for i'm just a bit upset why don't get upset don't get upset stop stop stop stop
34:49stop stop stop why are you getting upset my garment is it doesn't fit with the team
34:58this is all about teamwork it's all about making a collection
35:01um and like mine just isn't in the collection essentially it just doesn't work
35:14it's just the nation brought to you by m and s
35:32dress the nation brought to you by m and s
35:35welcome back to dress the nation where the group challenge is proving precisely that challenging
35:46for team dalen after a change to maria's design wasn't communicated to sandeep by team leader dalen
35:52she's ended up with a blue dress in a collection of pink yellow and white garments and sandeep is now
35:58concerned her dream job might be slipping away are you using blue i mean it'd be easier for sandeep to
36:09put pink on hers because it's such a blocked palette with sandeep's dress no not in keeping with the rest
36:16team leader dale and no needs to try and salvage his team's collection and avoid him or one of his team
36:22leaving the competition okay i think i just need some reassurance that i'm doing the right thing honestly
36:27you know what you're doing don't doubt yourself i was just trying to figure out a way to bring mine
36:32closer to yours is there any like space for like piping or anything like that uh yes like a yellow piping
36:39maybe yeah yeah and then i can just sew that at the bottom of the cutout yeah everyone else's outfit
36:45has an essence of yellow in it yeah but i think that that's the binding agent okay um so you just
36:50focus on your beautiful dress and then just talk about that one later cool all right thank you hi
36:54tendai oh hello how are the boys getting on do you feel comfortable just letting the boys get on with
36:59it oh yeah yeah oh these these are pros definitely i've got the best team i mean the only thing you
37:09can do is put some back darts in at this point i'm not happy with that front look or do a pleat to match
37:14the tracer i am super chuffed with it but a pleat was very much a good idea hey teams you got 30 minutes
37:21left oh my gosh zippin pleats done she's all good she's about to go on the mannequin and get a waistband
37:29and then i'm finished it's good i would maybe do a little bit less fabric there
37:36having struggled with his role as team leader throughout this challenge the pressure is taking
37:41its toll on dalen i sewed this section of the skirt wrong
37:48how on earth did i do that that is just insane i won't have enough time to like recut anything so i'll
37:55have to adapt what is here i'm worried i'm letting the side down no you're not meanwhile team tendai
38:01are going from strength to strength and are even adding additional items to their collection
38:06because it's a weekend i'm gonna do a weekend bag a cute bag would be a touch yeah accessories is a huge
38:12part of going away as well everyone needs a weekend bag and this is weekend away so i feel like it's a
38:17really core part of our collection nothing quite like winging it is there i'm sure we can pull it out the
38:24bag literally i think you know although we're being judged on our individual pieces i think we're
38:29creating a really cohesive look you've got 10 minutes to go so look at that fit it's gonna ever so warm
38:39do you want me to keep them singular bags or do you want me to make them reversible i think reversible
38:44yeah sweet i'm getting angry at these trousers now
38:49something going on with a sleeve i like it it looks twisted don't think about that that doesn't
38:55matter you can't change it now let's get it finished yeah because that's gonna be the inside and then
39:00that's gonna be the outside yeah right everyone you've got two minutes
39:08oh that's so good we're the color queens i love set it looks good now you know what
39:16hello it was a good choice because it brings out the blue in that chin chin you've done it
39:23how are you doing yeah i just need to sew a bit and on okay you literally have seconds second
39:28let's go let's go where am i going where am i going this one this one this one this one this one
39:32three two one time's up to see that me and my team managed to create a beautiful collection
39:46in the time that we're given i feel so proud i hope the max and spencer customers see the vision
39:53my yellow isn't popping enough it's there though it's there it doesn't matter
39:57what's going on that was a roller coaster of epic proportions
40:05they work so so well together and actually you really can see love it or hate it kind of
40:11it is very cohesive and i love the bag yeah they've pushed the boundaries yeah clearly working
40:16collaboratively as a team to just stretch and add something which i think is a massive massive kind
40:23of bonus yeah the natural kind of colorways really massively on trend at the moment our customers love
40:30linen yeah and it's also trending and blue and white stripes in particular are very much of the moment
40:37it just feels it's a bit of an overall collection slightly safe yeah slightly predictable it's not
40:42anything i've not seen before no i completely agree we're expecting somebody that's going to come with
40:47new designs and new ideas and show us something that we've not really seen before we were really
40:53clear in terms of make this a cohesive coherent message in terms of an overall collection it just
41:00doesn't sit together as a collection at all though really does it and i'm not quite sure what to make
41:06of dayland's out no i know i think compared to where he was on his first one which we all absolutely
41:14loved i'm not quite sure what's happened here i can see what julie was trying to achieve here with the
41:19jacket you know contrasting lining i don't know how contemporary it's not contemporary at all so this
41:26is sandeep's dress yeah she's definitely applied a lot more detail than you think to the first dress
41:31but there's a real mix of pieces isn't there
41:34so we know what the experts think but what do the public think oh they look judgy we've invited
41:47some real life mns customers along to see if any of the collections would have them parting wares with
41:52their cash oh they're really checking things aren't they yeah i love the trousers i think they're super
41:58flattering really cute and i also love the top i'd maybe wear this and this one together rather
42:04than this and this one i don't disagree with that i would 100 take this all to the till with me
42:12oh my god i think it's flattering and it's also what i would expect to see at marks and spencers too
42:20killed it i love how it's the nod to trends as well but i love the fact that it's edgier enough
42:25that i think my teenage daughters are going to help themselves as well wow and it's win-win
42:30if we can all help ourselves to each other's wardrobes great
42:36don't know if these four items go together particularly i mean when you think about
42:40collections fashion collections they usually have you know little bits of other bits put to them you
42:46know to make it all sort of coordinate blazer no i wouldn't get it
42:52oh dress this is cute if you wanted to try something different but no
43:03it is what it is we've done it's best look we did try you know it is what it is
43:09mixed reviews from the customers leave some hard decisions for the experts as they now have to decide
43:15who's still in the running for that incredible job opportunity and who simply isn't mns material
43:21two completely different challenges for women's work week and it's been interesting to say the least
43:27it's a real mix to be honest i'm excited or kind of the prospect of some of them but really surprised
43:33how there's literally been somebody that was the best yesterday and probably in the bottom two or three
43:39today yeah in challenge one when we saw dalen's dress i think all of us were kind of quite blown
43:44away by the design the originality and then on the second challenge i just don't know what he was
43:50thinking who's in danger there's a couple of people for me first i still think julie i think the tennis
43:56dress yesterday unfortunately was a real red flag for me and i feel like we've gone from almost tennis dress
44:03to tennis blazer like i don't mind the blazer i really don't know it's really divided opinion the blazer
44:10what did your customers think of that blazer i would say at least half or more did like it
44:17it's really really tough let's talk about sandeep shall we because in the summer dress challenge oh dear
44:25she found it quite difficult yeah in terms of knocking out of the park from be answering the brief and being
44:30bowls all they're pushing the boundaries representing her personality and her style that's where it
44:37fails it sounds like sandeep darling and julie are all in the danger zone i don't think julie should be
44:45in the danger zone well it should be you three have a lot to hash out then it's a toughie to decide
44:51kind of winners and losers on this one designers congratulations on an amazing first week you've
45:04produced some sensational outfits however there can be only one outstanding collection the experts have
45:15taken on the customer feedback and made their final decision the team with the must-have collection and
45:24therefore safely through to next week is
45:26team tender
45:44wow i still can't believe it i knew we created something good but really shocked
45:50back was then so proud and what a team leader really really kind of clear in terms of the
45:57direction that was set well done team tendai
46:05should have made a hanky
46:09well done thank you thank you means a lot unfortunately that means one of you from the
46:14remaining teams will be heading home it was very very tough and it wasn't a unanimous decision
46:23the designer leaving the competition is
46:31julie
46:37come on bring it in you've been amazing
46:39it's been fantastic and i've enjoyed every little minute of it from start to finish what an
46:51experience so grateful to be here and it's been lovely next time on dress the nation this week is all
47:00about lingerie please everything could go around get it in get it done chop chop i chose a really
47:09complicated design oh where's that quick take it off take it off take it off she's very ready goodness me
47:30i'll see you next time
47:56dress the nation brought to you by mns
