A call to fill vacancies, increase the financial allocation and find more space, was made by the President of the Industrial Court this morning.

President Heather Seale was addressing a special sitting of the court at SAPA, San Fernando, for the opening of the 2025/2026 law term.

Our reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh was there and tells us more.

00:00As it celebrates its 60th year, the Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago lists many achievements.
00:07But during the opening of the new law tomb, its president also took time to outline the many things it currently needs.
00:15Tenure of judges and other legislative amendments were high on President Heather Seale's list.
00:21But to do the job every day, she says dozens of vacancies for court reporters and secretarial staff need to be filled by the Public Service Commission.
00:31And then, there's need for better working conditions and space to operate.
00:36We remain hopeful that in the new financial year, we will receive sufficient funding to start some much-needed work to upgrade our court.
00:47The staff and occasionally our judges are not as comfortable as they should be.
00:54She says she listened at the judiciary's opening ceremony of the law tomb on Tuesday and heard of many improvement projects or physical facilities ongoing.
01:03And said, while they are smaller, their needs are similar, having now outgrown their space.
01:09We have been our brother's keeper in relation to housing the Recognition, Registration and Certification Board on the Court's third floor for a number of years.
01:23We now need that space urgently.
01:27It is our hope that in this court year, suitable premises will be found for the board.
01:34And I see the Minister of Labour here, he may, I am sure he would take note of this.

01:52I think there's some fundamental things in vacant positions to be filled with more space.
01:58So those are critical things and we will be working with the court.
