President of the Greater San Fernando Area Chamber of Commerce Kiran Singh says the TTPS extortion task force is a welcomed initiative in the fight against crime.

However, he says other measures are urgently needed if the government wants to give citizens a sense of safety and security.

Singh spoke with our reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh today and she tells us more.

00:00News that the TTPS has set up an extortion task force is being met with open arms.
00:06President of the Greater San Fernando Area Chamber of Commerce Kiran Singh says
00:11for far too long business people have become soft targets for criminals.
00:16We are pleading with the TTPS, the defence force, all security agencies
00:20that they have to find out what is causing the gang element to grow
00:27especially through attracting the youth in this country and causing them
00:32to attack innocent business people. Senior citizens are also under attack.
00:36We have home invasions increasing throughout the country and with no let up.
00:41So the task force is certainly welcome because the extortion extends beyond just business persons.
00:49He says many people across different sectors live in fear
00:53and in a country like ours he believes people should be able to go about their daily routines
00:59without the constant threat of attack.
01:02He says while citizens are often advised on taking personal measures
01:06it's no longer enough protection against the type of mindset and firepower criminals come armed with.
01:13Put books up in front of your business place, in your house, put security cameras, get dogs,
01:20go home early, don't stay out too late, don't open your business place too late,
01:26be mindful of suspicious characters, report anything you see to the police.
01:30And by and large we have been doing that. These criminals have no fear of the camera,
01:35they have no fear of dogs, they have no fear of Google approved,
01:38they have no fear of no security element whatsoever.
01:41I believe that if a person certainly merits ownership of a weapon,
01:49they should be given the right to hold that.
01:52Following Friday's press conference, Singh says the use of statistics
01:57to present a narrative of crime reduction to the population does nothing to reassure people.
02:03What they want is to see and feel first hand the effects of crime fighting in their everyday lives.
02:10That could only happen if they see some sort of dent in what is happening with crime.
02:16And we're not seeing that. And we expect to see increased vehicular patrols of police.
02:22And we keep making the point maybe they need the assistance of the army
02:26if their workforce is limited through sick leave or vacation leave or study leave or whatever it is.
02:35The murder rate continues to increase.
