00:00You're not insulting Brock Purdy, huh?
00:02But.
00:03I'm not insulting Brock Purdy, but.
00:05Yeah, the big but.
00:06The but comes right in.
00:07And this is like, look, we've been around this a thousand different ways for three years now,
00:13you and I and all of our listeners.
00:17You're free to think that I'm wrong,
00:19and I'm free to think that the way we react to 49er football in these moments
00:23is a little bit of an insult to Brock Purdy.
00:27I just do.
00:27This is how I feel.
00:30When the quarterback goes down and everyone goes, ah, we'll win anyway.
00:34Like, I just, that's how I feel.
00:37I feel like two things are happening at once.
00:40A, it is somehow a love letter to Kyle Shanahan,
00:45and it is a little, maybe insulting is the wrong thing, it's a little dismissive.
00:51Disrespectful.
00:52Yeah, I feel that way.
00:54Don't be disrespectful.
00:55I don't think most of you mean for it to be that, but I just think that it is.
01:00I think that there is a dismissiveness of what he brings to the table
01:06and what will be missed now in any game that he doesn't play.
01:10And I find it to be a very, very, very key thing for the 49ers,
01:14and it is why I look at a game like even this weekend and all games he doesn't play,
01:19and I remove expectation because one of the most important, if not the most important,
01:25and best 49ers is not there.
01:27Oh, by the way, to go along with one of the other best and most important 49ers and possibly more.
01:33So when you add all that up, I do think this is going to be hard,
01:37and I also think that it's a little dismissive of what Brock does.
01:43I think you're taking it too much to be about Brock Purdy.
01:46It's not, in this case for me, it's not as much about Brock Purdy as it is about four or five other things,
01:53including Mac Jones being more than capable, the defense being good enough,
01:59New Orleans not being that good, their quarterback having never won a football game as a starter,
02:06and Kyle Shannon being an amazing coach.
02:08So for me, it's not as simple as Brock's out, Mac is in, oh, you can still win.
02:13That's disrespectful to Brock.
02:14It's not about that.
02:15It's about everything else in totality in this game that leads me to think that they can still win.
02:22Now, if Brock misses five games, will they go 6-0?
02:26They're allowed to, to use your phrase.
02:28I wouldn't anticipate that they would go 6-0, and if they beat New Orleans, I'll look at what Mac did.
02:35I'll watch the game two or three times, and then I'll have a better idea about whether or not they can beat Arizona and Jacksonville.
02:41I will say, disrespectful was your word, not mine.
02:44I don't think the word's disrespectful and insulting.
02:46That's too firm for me.
02:47I choose dismissive, and I feel that way, and I don't think you're allowed to back out of that by saying,
02:54I feel it's for other reasons.
02:55I think, to me, they're all in one bucket.
02:58If you think that those other reasons are why the 49ers are still able to be a successful football team,
03:06then on some level, to me, what Brock brings to the table is being a little bit dismissed.
03:13How do you try this one on for size?
03:15This is football with Kevin Clark on ESPN.
03:18Ryan Fitzmagic is the guest, and he's asked, who's the most underrated quarterback in the league?
03:24It's Brock Purdy.
03:25It's Brock Purdy, even though he's been paid.
03:27I think everybody in San Francisco appreciates what he brings and what he does every single week,
03:33but I still don't think that NFL fans appreciate how good this guy is,
03:39and when you put on his tape the anticipation that he throws with,
03:43the stuff that he gets those guys out of in terms of avoiding bad plays,
03:48and then what a great example in week one, he throws two interceptions, right?
03:53But he's played in so many dang games.
03:56He has so much confidence in himself.
03:58He's so calm when he's out there that then what happens at the end of the game,
04:02he has a situation where he has a chance to drive them down to win the game,
04:06and what does he do?
04:07He goes down and wins the game.
04:09And so I think a very important progression as a quarterback,
04:12when you have the ball with two minutes left,
04:14does your team believe that you're actually going to win the game?
04:17And when the other team has the ball, are they thinking, oh, my God,
04:20we can't give this quarterback another chance.
04:23We've got to run this clock out.
04:24And Brock Purdy is entering that conversation as that guy,
04:28and I think he's truly still underrated by most NFL fans.
04:32Yeah, it's interesting.
04:33Maybe I elevate certain opinions in a way sort of higher than I should.
04:39I think all of us are impressionable to some degree,
04:44unless really what you do is just put on earmuffs and watch every football game
04:49and then decide that, like, this is my opinion based solely on what I see.
04:54We all hear voices.
04:55We all read things.
04:57Other than Cam Newton,
04:59the list of people who've played the position,
05:05who have continued to trumpet,
05:07that this guy literally blows them away,
05:10is so long.
05:12And Fitzmagic is only the latest to say something like this,
05:15and the list includes people like Tom Brady, Joe Montana, and Kurt Warner,
05:20and Steve Young.
05:22Like, that's the list.
05:25And so I don't, like, I'll bite.
05:28Maybe I listen to those voices too much.
05:31But when I hear stuff like that,
05:33I'll tell you where my mind goes.
05:35It's not just as simple as going, well, if Tom Brady says it, it's true.
05:38It's more like they clearly know things about what it takes to do what they do
05:46that we don't know.
05:48Like, we look at any interception sometimes,
05:51and we think it's the same bite of a bad apple.
05:54And not every interception is cut the same.
05:56And not every drive is the same.
05:59And so when people who did this or do this for a living
06:02speak about him the way that they do,
06:05when he talks about his progressions,
06:07to me that's stuff that when we watch a football game
06:10with popcorn and slippers on, we don't see that.
06:14We don't see that.
06:15They do.
06:15I mean, you can see it when you watch it multiple times.
06:18Not the same way.
06:19Not the same way as somebody.
06:19I'm definitely a quarterback in the NFL, but yeah, you can see it.
06:22And the whole idea about underrated or overrated
06:25is something that I have a hard time with
06:27because that is perception-based.
06:29It comes down to really the reality of whether or not you think he's good.
06:34And Fitzmagic thinks he's a good quarterback, and he's right.
06:37And he talked about the fourth-quarter comeback,
06:40which is only the second time he's entered a fourth quarter
06:43and brought his team back to victory.
06:45But the way he did that with the throw to Pearsall that on second and nine
06:50really propelled them down across the 50 into an area
06:53where they actually could win the game.
06:55It was a great throw.
06:56It was a great catch by Pearsall.
06:58It was a great route concept.
07:00It was protected very well,
07:02as we all criticized the offensive line for having a down game.
07:06On that play, second and nine, everything lined up.
07:10Did the quarterback make a good throw?
07:12Yeah, he did.
07:13But the receiver got open, and the line protected,
07:16and the coach drew up a gem.
07:18So sometimes I think that we all get bogged down into the one guy, Brock Purdy.
07:23Is he overrated?
07:24Is he underrated?
07:25He's probably underrated, but what does that mean?
07:28Is he good enough to win games?
07:29Yeah, he is.
07:31He's won a lot of games.
07:32I'm not bringing it up just because it's something that, you know,
07:34he's the 49er quarterback,
07:36so therefore he's the straw that stirs the drink in this town.
07:40It's not that.
07:41I think it's relevant right now.
07:43He's hurt.
07:44He's hurt.
07:45And so each and every one of us gets to arrive at our own spot
07:50in terms of what that means for our expectations of the 49ers
07:55for however long he's out.
07:57And mine dropped through the floor.
07:59That's all.
08:00And, again, like I'm rooting for them.
08:03I don't even want to say I might be wrong
08:05because I'm not saying that they can't win.
08:07I'm just saying, like, I'm not going to expect anything
08:10until I see otherwise.
08:13And maybe Mack will be really good this week,
08:15and maybe he'll be really good every week.
08:17Maybe he'll only be really good this week.
08:19Maybe you all are right.
08:20Maybe the Saints are a college team.
08:22Maybe the Niners are playing LSU on Sunday.
08:24I don't know.
08:25I don't really feel like after a week of football,
08:28I know exactly who these football teams are yet.
08:32I don't know.
08:32I don't know why the Dolphins are favored this weekend.
08:35Scares the hell out of me to pick the Patriots
08:37because what the hell is Vegas doing favoring the Dolphins against anyone?
08:42Yeah.
08:42I'll take Cal if they're playing the Dolphins based on what I saw last week.
08:46But, so I don't know.
08:48Yeah, the Saints on paper are not good,
08:50and then they went out and lost a football game.
08:52Although, it was not an ugly football game.
08:55No.
08:55Like, they played a one-score game,
08:58and it was kind of a one-score-ish game most of the time.
09:01And so I'm not expecting much from the Saints,
09:04but I don't really know exactly who they are.
09:07But I also feel that way right now about the 49ers.
09:10And so, in a way, that's kind of my thought,
09:12is it's interesting how many people still think they know what to expect
09:16from the Niners this weekend.
09:18I don't feel like I've got any idea what they're going to look like
09:20with, like, at least two possibly more really key people
09:26who are centerpieces of what they do are not there.
09:30You just don't know.
09:31You don't know what it's going to look like.
09:33And the thing that I learned this morning is I did my deep dive
09:36on the backup quarterbacks last year.
09:39And as I mentioned earlier, they were 23-68 backup quarterbacks.
09:43They won at a 25% rate.
09:46But when you start to dive deeper, who actually won?
09:49And the teams that won with a backup quarterback tended to be good teams.
09:54Green Bay had a guy named Malik Willis start weeks two and three.
09:59And those were both rabbit out-of-the-hat games, if you watched them.
10:02And I remember those.
10:03If you want to talk about actually what happened,
10:05in the first game, he goes 12-14.
10:09They threw the ball 14 times.
10:12He threw a touchdown, buck 22 in the air.
10:16And you had Josh Jacobs run 32 times for 151.
10:20You beat a winless, much like New Orleans is now.
10:22Was it the Titans?
10:23The Colts.
10:24Oh, the Colts.
10:24The next week is when they played the Titans, who were 0-2.
10:29Malik Willis goes out, and he goes 13-14.
10:3214-of-19 for 2-0-2.
10:35And they didn't, I mean, Malik ran at 73 yards.
10:38And so, again, it was kind of rabbit out-of-the-hat.
10:41But it was outside of what the Packers would, quote-unquote, like to do.
10:45My greater point is Malik Willis is a backup.
10:49Mac Jones had been a starter.
10:51Malik Willis has never really been a starter.
10:53And Green Bay saw what they had, and they realized, geez, we don't want to have Malik Willis throw it 35 or 40 times.
11:00This is the way we're going to have to win these games.
11:03And they're a good team, and they won those games.
11:06Can I get some additional, and I'm checking my memory here, those games that the Packers won?
11:12Yep.
11:12What was the final score of those two games?
11:16The Titans was 30-14.
11:19Okay.
11:19And there was a pick-six for the Packers.
11:23That's what I, so I was, I feel like there were defensive and special teams touchdowns at one point or another during those two weeks.
11:30I might be wrong.
11:31Pick-six in the game against the Titans.
11:33Yep.
11:34And, I mean, the Titans fell to 0-3.
11:36Sure.
11:36In that game.
11:37No, they're awful.
11:38They had the first pick in the draft.
11:39And the previous game was 16-10 over the Colts, and it was three Narvison kicks and a touchdown pass from Willis to Wicks.
11:50Okay.
11:51And that was your scoring.
11:53Yeah.
11:53But, again, it was, this is where I'm thinking about Mac Jones, and I was looking at Mac Jones' career,
11:59and of all the games where he's attempted 39 passes or more, Mac Jones is 0-11.
12:06So, if you're looking for Mac Jones to go out there and throw the ball a lot, you're going to lose.
12:12So, Mac Jones, and I'm thinking about Malik Willis, if Mac Jones can come out and go 14-21 and not throw a pick,
12:19and you can run the football effectively, you can win with Mac Jones.
12:22You can.
12:24Of course.
12:25That's the blueprint, though.
12:26Right.
12:26And Kyle Shanahan needs to, and I know he is, he's thinking about blueprints.
12:31Right.
12:31But I just, so that's, I love the way that is sort of stated.
12:36Yes, you can.
12:38And that's where I'm at.
12:39What I keep hearing from people is that they should, and I remember those games last year,
12:46and pick sixes and 16-10 and things like that.
12:49Dude, they're grinders.
12:50They're grinders that, hell, we already watched it.
12:53It looked, they looked exactly like last week looked.
12:57Difference being is you had a quarterback throw for 277 yards last week.
13:01You didn't have that in those games.
13:03And so.
13:04One interesting thing about the Colts game.
13:05Yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:06At Lambeau, the Colts were favored by two and a half.
13:09Yes.
13:10Favored by two and a half.
13:11Yeah, Malik Willis is not good.
13:12At Green Bay.
13:13Right.
13:14And the Packers still won.
13:14They still won.
13:15And the Niners are favored by three and a half at New Orleans.
13:18There you go.
13:19Which tells me that the markets at least think more of Mac Jones than they did of Malik Willis.
13:24I'm sure they do.
13:24I'm sure they do.
13:25Absolutely.
13:26You're listening to 95.7 The Game.
13:27KGMZ FM and HD1 San Francisco and Odyssey Sports Station.
13:30And the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyrie.
13:33He's always live on the free Odyssey app.
13:34Coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
13:36Remember earlier this week when the Niners were like, Brock Purdy's going to speak.
13:40And they sent that out to the media and everyone's like, Brock Purdy's going to speak.
13:43And then everyone went to the podium and there was no Brock Purdy.
13:45Brock Purdy didn't speak.
13:46And so everyone's like, when's the quarterback going to talk?
13:49Well, was this today, Grandy?
13:51So now the Niners, they did a little makeup game and Mac Jones spoke.
13:56So we've got six good minutes of Mac.
13:59As I used to say in Jamaica, Big Mac, Big Mac.
14:02Nice.
14:03I used to say eight weeks ago.
14:05I was drunk.
14:06But anyway, Mac spoke for six minutes.
14:10And let's drink.
14:12And at 4.15, we will play that for you.
14:16All you Mac Jones fans out there.
14:18Six minutes of Mac.
14:19Six minutes, yeah.
14:20It's the return of the Mac.
14:21I love it.
14:22At 4.15.
14:23And count me among the Mac Jones fans because I think that, especially as I look at his career
14:28log.
14:29Like, fine, but why?
14:30Because he's played enough football.
14:33He's started enough football.
14:35He has started playoff games.
14:37He was hand-picked by Shanahan and Lynch in the offseason and paid handsomely to be a
14:42backup.
14:43So go out there and be our backup and win a game that you should win.
14:47Okay.
14:47Agreed.
14:48And I root for all.
14:48That's why I'm a fan.
14:49No, but here.
14:50So I'm trying to learn something about where you're coming from on this.
14:55I just spelled it out perfectly.
14:56No, because I asked you why you're a fan and what you gave me were a bunch of...
15:01It's a lot of circumstantial, sure.
15:03It's a bunch of things that he did, but none of them were impressive.
15:07It's just he played.
15:07Going 10-6 as a rookie and going to the playoffs is not impressive.
15:10But you didn't say that.
15:11I absolutely said that.
15:12No, you said he's played.
15:13I said he went and he played a playoff game.
15:16You said he's played.
15:17I said he played a playoff game.
15:19Which means that you started all year.
15:21You won enough games to be in the playoffs.
15:23That matters.
15:24I want to know, when you watch Mac, what did you see where you're like,
15:29that's a good quarterback?
15:31A guy who is efficient enough with things around him that he has around him
15:36to where he can win games.
15:37You don't win 20 games in the NFL by complete accident.
15:42No, I don't.
15:42Listen, I don't think I've said all week that Mac is a joke.
15:47That Mac needs help getting out of bed in the morning.
15:50Boy, I hope there's somebody to tie his shoes.
15:52I'm not saying any of those things.
15:54But I'm struggling to find the person, even the Niners themselves.
15:59Their press conferences have been hilarious this week.
16:02He's a fun guy.
16:04What's everybody's confidence in Mac?
16:05Well, it's hilarious.
16:06Yeah, teammates love him.
16:08He wears weird suits.
16:09My wife talked about him.
16:11Christian McCaffrey was asked on Monday, what do y'all like about Mac?
16:17Well, Mac has been here, and Mac has played games, and Mac's really likable,
16:23and he's fun.
16:25We love Mac.
16:26And I'm like, where is that?
16:29I'm trying to sink my teeth into something that someone saw where they're like,
16:36not in Alabama, but since Alabama.
16:39Well, Shanahan said that.
16:40Where it's like, dude, that he plays really good at quarterback.
16:46Didn't Shanahan say that yesterday when he talked about what Mac Jones brings and stuff?
16:52And he likes Mac Jones, and he's been here a long time.
16:57See?
16:57It took you two sentences to get right back to the scene.
16:59I don't know the exact cut.
17:00Well, here's what he said.
17:01He's the same this week as he's been all camp.
17:03Our team really believes in him.
17:05Our team really enjoys him, and he did a hell of a job this week in practice.
17:08That's from today, right?
17:09Yes.
17:09I don't know what we had earlier.
17:11Do we have anything earlier in the week?
17:12It's okay.
17:13It's not even that important.
17:14He's got swag.
17:15Ultimately, he goes.
17:16I think he's funny.
17:17I think he's himself.
17:18My wife said he must be real funny and have a sense of humor because she saw his suit that
17:22he wore last week to the game.
17:23I said, I don't think he's trying to be funny.
17:25He's just got swag.
17:26So it's just him.
17:28But no, Mac's himself.
17:29Makes guys laugh.
17:30He's got a lot of energy, and I think our guys have really enjoyed him so far.
17:34Yeah.
17:34It's all great.
17:35I mean, what was the question?
17:36Like, what's Mac like in the locker room?
17:38What's Mac like as a guy?
17:39I don't know.
17:40I don't know what the question was.
17:42Yeah.
17:42I don't know.
17:42Ultimately, all the words that Kyle is going to utter about Mac Jones, it doesn't matter.
17:48He'll either go out and play well and they'll win.
17:50He'll play well and they'll lose.
17:52He'll play bad and they'll win.
17:53Yeah.
17:54Or he'll play bad and they'll lose.
17:55Right.
17:56So those...
17:56None of this matters.
17:57No, but that...
17:58Well, of course it matters.
17:59We're just hanging out talking.
18:00Sure.
18:00That's where my brain is.
18:02You just came up with four possibilities, and I think all of them are possible.
18:05Right.
18:05So none of that breeds confidence.
18:07There's no should there.
18:09There's no expectation there.
18:10There's...
18:10Yeah, that's for you.
18:11For me, there is should and there is expectation.
18:14Yeah, and I'm just wondering what it was you saw.
18:16Because you are the better team.
18:17Well, what I've seen, and I haven't seen every snap of his 49 starts, but over the course
18:21of his career, he is at times accurate, and he, like any other quarterback, there's times
18:26when you're not accurate.
18:28Brock Purdy threw two interceptions in week one.
18:30I think Mac Jones has enough experience to not be wowed by the moment or wowed by the
18:35crowd.
18:36I think being here for six months allows him to understand the scheme and the system at
18:42a high enough level to where you're not going to have to inhibit what he does based
18:48on how new he is in the system.
18:50You know, if you get down to Martinez, if he has to come in, well, then it's like Josh
18:54Johnson all over again in the NFC Championship.
18:57Maybe.
18:57How do we know?
18:58I don't know what he's going to do.
18:59Maybe he's awesome.
19:00He's brand new.
19:01He's brand new in the system, but I don't imagine that he has the same command of the
19:05playbook that Mac Jones would after six months.
19:08But we would have said that about Brock Purdy when Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo were in
19:11front of him.
19:12Turns out that was actually the guy.
19:13But he had been here all spring and summer, and he had been with the team all the way up until
19:18he was asked to play in November.
19:20Well, my point is, like, from my eyes, it's not about just like, oh, you've been around
19:24and so you know the playbook.
19:26I'm like, what's your talent level?
19:28Like, Brock Purdy's way more talented than those other guys.
19:32Maybe Adrian Martinez's got a bunch.
19:33I don't know.
19:34I've never seen him play.
19:35Me either.
19:35I've never seen him play.
19:36I know that Mac is missing some things.
19:38That I know because I've watched him play.
19:40Yeah, I know that Mac is a guy who was highly regarded out of college, and he's been regarded
19:46enough to where multiple teams have wanted him on their team.
19:51Here's Shanahan.
19:52This is, I think, what we were looking for earlier in the week.
19:55He was asked, is Mac ready to start?
19:57Mac knows how to play the position.
19:59He can play well in the pocket, distributes the ball well, sees coverage as well, can play
20:02fast in there.
20:03He's got a lot of good film from the NFL with his experience and obviously college.
20:09Tough guy who will hang in there and deliver to the ball where he needs to go.
20:11Okay, that's got meat on it.
20:14I can take a bite out of that a little bit.
20:17I'm glad that they weren't like, is he ready to start?
20:19Well, I'll tell you what, he's going to have the huddle in shambles.
20:22Right.
20:23That's freaking hilarious out there.
