00:00We're talking about the idea of whether or not the 49ers front office actually,
00:05and maybe I'll rephrase it, rather than believe in the team,
00:08because I know they like their guys,
00:10and inherently they have to believe in them a little bit.
00:14They all have Niner jerseys.
00:16But do they believe in this year?
00:17I think it's a very fair question.
00:20Do the Niners truly believe in this year?
00:25And their actions would suggest only to a point.
00:30And so they do, to the point that they have to.
00:33They do.
00:33Yeah, there you go.
00:35They do.
00:36They do.
00:36Hey, Steve, do the Niners believe in their chances this year?
00:42I do, but we're not going to do anything, literally anything,
00:50to press on the gas this year that might put something else in a disadvantageous spot.
00:58Right, and if they did something to really fix this,
01:02then you're talking about an edge rusher and a first or second rounder,
01:06and then a linebacker, a third rounder,
01:08and then you're going to try to find a guard or a tackle, a fourth rounder.
01:12So now you're going to gut your entire draft for next year for what?
01:17For a chance this year to be, I don't know, from the six seed to the two seed,
01:21and still, I don't know, not have a great chance to do it?
01:24By the way, again, I'm going to reiterate,
01:26I'm not saying that that's the wrong thing to do.
01:29I'm with you.
01:30I'm just kind of pointing it out, and for me, it does shade the way that I watch a game.
01:36I've got a 16-year-old daughter at home who gets very upset
01:40if she sees anything that she believes is lack of faith.
01:48Okay, what's the hashtag for the Niners?
01:52FTTB.
01:52Yep.
01:53Faithful to the Bay.
01:55Our nickname as Niners fans, we are the Faithful.
01:59Yep.
02:00She does not like it.
02:02If she hears anybody not believe in anything,
02:05you know the famous story where she scolded me at halftime.
02:09I loved it.
02:09Of the Niner Lions game.
02:11Yep.
02:11When I said we need to start at least,
02:14we need to start dealing with the concept that maybe we're not going to the Super Bowl this year,
02:17and she said, what did you just say?
02:19And that was the playoff game.
02:20That was halftime.
02:21Not last year, but two years ago.
02:23Halftime of the NFC Championship game.
02:25And then they won, and she's been I-told-you-so in me ever since.
02:30So that's why I have to come say this to you, because I can't say it in my living room.
02:34Right.
02:34I don't think the Niner defense is very good.
02:38I don't think it's very good.
02:40And I don't think you do special stuff in the NFL when you don't have a very good defense.
02:46And there's about nothing that they can do about it right now.
02:49And I'll say this too, the offense is not very good either.
02:53You've got Christian McCaffrey, who is having a borderline MVP year.
02:58He might be a guy who goes thousand-thousand, the first ever to do it twice.
03:02And you have a backup quarterback, and you have a receiver who is hurt, and a receiver who is hurt.
03:08And your offense is not very good either.
03:11So, like, as a team, you're kind of doing it with smoke and mirrors.
03:15And I know we're going to play ten plays that tell you why they're six and three.
03:19And they're plays that help them win games.
03:22But I look at the game on Sunday against the Ram team, and you're home and you're four-and-a-half-point dogs.
03:28When was the last time the Niners were six and three at home and underdogs?
03:33How about just when was the last time, well, I guess maybe at the end of the last year.
03:37I was trying to think, when's the last time the Niners were a dog by more than a field goal at home?
03:42Period.
03:44I don't care what the circumstances are.
03:45What's your record?
03:46Yeah, I'll find it.
03:47What was the spread when the Lions came at the end of last year?
03:51That was going to be my guess.
03:51I can try to find that.
03:52Yeah, that's one that does stand out.
03:54But I can't remember a lot of times in the last handful of years
03:57where the Niners were more than a field goal dog at Levi's Stadium.
04:01Against anybody for any reason.
04:02Yep.
04:03No matter who the quarterback is or whatever.
04:06All right, out to the phones we go.
04:08Gary San Ramon.
04:09Hi, Gary.
04:09Thanks for calling.
04:10Willie and Dibby, what are you doing, Gary?
04:14Hey, man.
04:15I'm just enjoying a beautiful afternoon out here in the Bay, man.
04:17It's like 70 degrees, and here we are.
04:19How many days into November?
04:21It's nice.
04:22Yeah, all good.
04:24It's just great.
04:25But, anyway, thanks so much for the topic.
04:29I just, as a Niner fan, the big overriding thing for me, guys,
04:34is the Super Bowl is in our backyard this year.
04:37And, my goodness, you know, what an opportunity.
04:41And I think it's sending the wrong message to a team that's 6-3
04:45and still in the hunt.
04:46And my other point is we've got, like, 18 top three missed draft picks.
04:55So, we're worried about getting fleeced for our draft picks.
04:58So, frankly, the history is not very good for the top three picks.
05:02And, basically, trading for an established player like CMC has worked out terrific.
05:07But, conversely, you traded DeForest Buckner, and he's still playing at a high level.
05:14And he's healthy.
05:16So, what have we had?
05:18We had Kinlaw, Thomas, Webster, Drake Jackson, and the big one, Lance, all big-time misses.
05:25So, the Jets are having a fire sale.
05:27Lynch doesn't want to get fleeced.
05:29But, really, it's too late.
05:31Hey, Ayuk played you big-time last year for the contract,
05:35and Purdy and Bosa are not available with huge contracts.
05:38So, let's use our draft picks that we don't do very well top three anyway.
05:43And trade, Jets had guys that we could have used.
05:47So, let's see what Kyle can cook up for the Rams and go Niners.
05:51Gary, before you hang up, can I ask you a question?
05:55Sure, absolutely.
05:56Give me something you love to do.
05:58Like, are there any sports that you like to play?
06:04No, I'm too old for that anymore.
06:05What about a bunch of years ago?
06:09You played golf or basketball or anything like that?
06:13Oh, yeah.
06:13I ran track in high school, and I played golf when I could.
06:18Perfect, perfect.
06:19Let's do golf.
06:20Let's do golf.
06:21You ever have a day where you knocked about six straight tee shots into the woods?
06:27Absolutely.
06:28All right.
06:28All the time.
06:29Did you immediately say, I suck, I'll never hit another good golf shot again?
06:36No, because you get a good shot at 18, and that brought you back.
06:39There you go.
06:39And that's what I would say about the Niners' first and second round draft picks.
06:44Like, I get what you're saying.
06:46Gary, thank you so much for calling.
06:48But, like, I'm going to fight back on this point.
06:52I hear it all the time, so I know a lot of you feel it.
06:55But this concept that the Niners have had misses before in the first and second round,
07:01therefore they should spit on them and leave them in a trash can somewhere, is crazy to me.
07:07First of all, they haven't missed on all of them.
07:10Nick Bosa is one of them.
07:12Okay?
07:13All right.
07:13Debo Samuel is one of them.
07:15They have not missed on all.
07:18Ricky Pearsall is one of them.
07:20Sure.
07:20And that's early.
07:2120-23, no pick.
07:24Right.
07:24That's a miss.
07:25Wow.
07:26Trey Lance.
07:27Sure.
07:2720-22, no pick, Trey Lance.
07:3020-22, Drake Jackson.
07:32That's a miss.
07:33Are we going third round, or are we going just the top two rounds?
07:36What are we doing?
07:36I mean, you can do whatever you want.
07:38This is a moving goalpost.
07:39And my father-in-law has the yellow spreadsheet on the yellow piece of paper, and we can do this.
07:46What a weird concept from a team that has absolutely crushed the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th round.
07:53Right, but what if you did better in the top end of it?
07:56Like, what if?
07:57And you can have that conversation, but I would bet even you, you're not at a spot where you're now like,
08:03we should sit it out.
08:05We suck at this.
08:07No, no, no.
08:07We should never, ever try again.
08:08This is where I disagree with the caller, because you're not going to trade your picks now.
08:12And if you want to talk about, like, recent days, last year, Pearsall, Green, Poonie, Mustafa,
08:19those four, they all play.
08:21They're all good.
08:22They're all regular guys.
08:24And, like, put aside Garendo, which I do think that once they cut him, he'll be good somewhere else.
08:30But Kyle, for some reason, whatever.
08:32Kyle doesn't love him.
08:33He's a jack.
08:34And Tatum Bethum, in that same draft, 7th rounder.
08:377th round.
08:38And now he's the dude.
08:38And then last year's draft, Mikel Williams, he looked good enough.
08:43Alfred Collins, good.
08:46Nick Martin, I do think that he's kind of a Tatum Bethum guy, where in a couple, like, D winners,
08:51it took him a couple years to get ready.
08:53Upton Stout, good.
08:55And, I mean, Marquise Siegel, I mean, now he's getting, like, DNPs.
09:00But I do think that if you look at the last couple of drafts, there have been more hits than misses.
09:05But I do think that if you want to look at the first and second rounds under Shanahan and Lynch,
09:10it's been more misses than hits.
09:11You can be underwhelmed by it without arriving at the point that the Niners should just kick them.
09:17Like, based on that logic, there should never be a trade deadline where the Niners do not ship out their next year's first and second rounders
09:26to get a player who actually is good because they're no good at it and we shouldn't have him anymore.
09:32And I know I'm overstating what he said a little bit, but I hear this point constantly.
09:37And I just find it to be a fascinating point.
09:40You can be frustrated by their output in the first and second round.
09:44You can be underwhelmed by it.
09:46I still think you stop yourself before you arrive at the opinion of,
09:51they should get rid of him every year.
09:53Like, they should definitely do that because they're not good at it.
09:56That's why I did the golf thing.
09:58You don't hit eight bad shots in a row and decide that you're not capable of hitting a good one the next one.
10:03Most people I know, in fact, are the opposite.
10:06They'll hit eight bad shots in a row and they'll ask for a mulligan because they'll go,
10:09that's not actually me.
10:11I didn't, you know what I mean?
10:12Like, I know I don't usually hit it like that.
10:13Yes, you do.
10:14Yes, you do.
10:15But you think you don't because that's not the way we operate in life.
10:20You get on the horse and try again.
10:23Again, that's what you do.
10:25And that is absolutely what I want the 49ers to do with their early draft picks next year,
10:30especially in the situation that they're in with some pretty hefty contracts.
10:35They're going to need some cheap labor.
10:38Don't kick that down the road just because you had some misses the last handful of years.
10:43And the Trey Lance one is tough because that's one pick.
10:46It turned into three picks, though.
10:48Of course, but you traded them.
10:50It's not like you evaluated a player three different times and picked him three different times.
10:55They mis-evaluated big time on one player.
10:59So that's a really bad draft pick.
11:01It's a triple bad draft pick.
11:02It is.
11:02It's what it is.
11:03But you get that there's not scouting involved in all three of the picks.
11:07Right.
11:07The scouting was such that you blew it in triplicate because 2019 you had Bosa and Debo.
11:16Boom, boom.
11:172020, you went Kinlaw and Ayuk.
11:19Okay, Ayuk, you can say what you want about him.
11:22He got hurt.
11:22He's been good.
11:23He had a great rookie year, and then he was good again.
11:27He got hurt.
11:28By the way, Kinlaw is producing right now.
11:30I don't know if that matters to anybody for Washington.
11:32Right.
11:33Right.
11:33For Washington.
11:34No, it's a miss.
11:36It's a miss because you didn't use him right or you didn't believe in him, so it's a miss.
11:42And then you go Trey Lance, Aaron Banks, Trey Sermon, Ambry Thomas.
11:46That was your top four.
11:48They're all gone.
11:49And, I mean, Aaron Banks got a big contract, and he got hurt.
11:52What round was Lenore?
11:54He was fifth.
11:55Okay.
11:55Ufunga fifth.
11:56I mean, I get it.
11:57Elijah Mitchell sixth.
11:58It's kind of funny.
11:59It is.
12:00There's a little bit of a comedy sketch in here somewhere.
12:03It's total comedy.
12:04It's like the Niners should sleep through their tee time and just show up on the second
12:08day of the draft.
12:09Right.
12:09I get it.
12:10Show up on the 10th tee.
12:11Actually, they maybe should just show up on the third day of the draft.
12:15Right.
12:15That's when round four starts.
12:172022.
12:18That's when they talk.
12:19Drake Jackson, Ty Davis-Price, Danny Gray.
12:22Right.
12:23But are you...
12:23What?
12:23Well, if we're doing third rounds, too, right?
12:26They did draft...
12:26Fred Warner's a third rounder.
12:28Fred Warner.
12:29Yep.
12:30There you go.
12:30So is Tavarius Moore.
12:32Yeah.
12:33So, I mean...
12:33Yes, he is.
12:34And fourth round, Kentavious Street.
12:36And I still...
12:37So, second round, Dante Pettis.
12:39Like, good lord.
12:40I still maintain that you can do this as a fan of any team.
12:44I promise you.
12:45I mean...
12:45You can do this as a fan of almost any team.
12:48You could do all 32 teams since 2017.
12:51And maybe I'll do that this weekend.
12:53I'll do a full-on deep dive of every draft from every team...
12:57Don't hurt yourself.
12:57...in the last nine years.
12:58Just relax and watch a game or something.
13:00You know who else is a third-round pick?
13:01Who?
13:02Jake Moody.
13:03Yeah.
13:04That's a crappy pick.
13:05You know who else is a third-round pick?
13:06Jalen Hurd.
13:08Yeah.
13:08Oh, never even played a regular season game.
13:10He was never healthy.
13:11Nope.
13:12Cameron Latu.
13:14Third-round pick.
13:14Yeah.
13:15So, I mean...
13:17I get it.
13:18But I don't think that that means that you want to not do this anymore.
13:22You don't want to abstain from day one and two of the draft, do you?
13:27And day three.
13:28No, you don't.
13:28Day three, they're good.
13:30Stop it.
13:30Just abstain from day one and two.
13:32Just trade all your firsts, your seconds, your thirds.
13:35And it's funny, because as you were doing this, I was like, you know, what about Kansas City?
13:38And I'm thinking about, like, after Patrick Mahomes and 2018, no first-round pick.
13:452019, no first-round pick.
13:472020, Clyde Edwards-Hilaire.
13:50Whatever.
13:50He was fine for...
13:51Miss.
13:52Yeah.
13:52Miss.
13:52Miss.
13:53Big time.
13:54Take it from somebody that will...
13:55Ooh, Andy Reid's running back.
13:57Make sure you grab him in the first round of your fantasy...
13:59He sucked.
14:00Right.
14:01He was underwhelming his whole career.
14:03And in fact, did you know, he's on the Chiefs again now.
14:07He's like their third or fourth string running back.
14:10Right.
14:10Yeah.
14:10More rushing touchdowns than Ty Davis-Price and Trey Sermon and Elijah Mitchell and Joe
14:19Williams combined.
14:20Right.
14:20But that's a first-rounder that you're comparing to third and fifth-rounders.
14:23Sure, sure.
14:24But anyway.
14:24Anyway.
14:25Yeah.
14:25I mean, we could talk about Reuben Foster and we could talk about...
14:28No, I'm not here to tell you they've been great.
14:31I'm just here to tell you I don't think that means they should abstain for the rest of their
14:34lives.
14:34I'm saying they should stop.
14:36No, you're not.
14:37Like...
14:37Dude, will you just...
14:38Knock it off.
14:39Just stop drafting.
14:40Give your real take.
14:41This week, you've been on a sarcasm run.
14:44Like, you don't...
14:45This week?
14:45You don't think that.
14:47You don't...
14:47That's the question.
14:48I know you don't think that.
14:50You believe the Niners should give away their firsts and seconds for next year for this
14:55team?
14:55Possibly.
14:56You believe that?
14:57I think that they should stop drafting defensive linemen and start drafting a tackle.
15:03Okay, that's different.
15:04But do you want them to not participate ever again in the first round?
15:08No, but stop messing it up.
15:10Well, yeah, that's fine.
15:11That's a different take.
15:13The top three rounds, they've been bad.
15:15They've been...
15:16And again, I'll do the whole deep dive this weekend.
15:18I'll look at every team.
15:20They've been sub 500 on the top three rounds.
15:22707.
15:23Hey, Willard, does Dibs stop gambling when his picks stink?
15:27The draft is a gamble.
15:30They missed.
15:31It doesn't mean you trade them.
15:33I'm just reading.
15:36Right.
15:37Yeah.
15:37And I never stop gambling.
15:39Okay.
15:40And I look at last night and the crowd was against me and fade, fade, fade.
15:44I don't know if, Randy, you probably were here clapping and fading too.
15:47We were right.
15:48No, it probably wasn't.
15:49That was a bad pick.
15:50And when I made the pick and I walked away, I was like, that was a bad pick.
15:54That's too many points.
15:55Thursday night, divisional game, they're always close.
15:59And low scoring.
16:00And the Broncos offense is under...
16:02Dude, that's the problem.
16:03Bo Nix, he stinks.
16:04Randy, I'm looking at you.
16:06This year's Broncos are last...
16:07He sucks.
16:07He wins a win.
16:08Yeah.
16:09Just look at the data.
16:10This year's Broncos are last year's Chiefs.
16:13Record is sparkly.
16:15They are winning by one and two and three.
16:18And because somebody made a...
16:19And a great defense, too.
16:20And a great defense, exactly like the Chiefs last year.
16:22People are making wacko mistakes at the end of games.
16:26And the Broncos are walking out of there with wins.
16:29It's happened constantly all year.
16:31I'm watching that last night.
16:32Their defense is saving them.
16:33Denver's up 10-7 with about eight minutes to go.
16:36And Bo Nix throws it to Doofus.
16:40Doofus Johnson.
16:43If you want to blame a duck, blame the other duck.
16:45The receiver, Troy Franklin.
16:46Who let a ball bounce off his chest for an interception.
16:49Doofus Franklin.
16:50Yeah.
16:50And, like, Denver's about to drive down and score.
16:53Denver's about to win 17-7.
16:55And I'm thinking, all right, I'm laying eight and a half.
16:58Sure.
16:58Don't throw it to Courtland Sutton.
16:59That's fine.
17:00On my fantasy team.
17:01I get it.
17:02He's covered.
17:03You throw it to Doofus Franklin.
17:04Catch the ball.
17:05Don't act like you deserved this one.
17:07I didn't.
17:07You did not.
17:08I did not.
17:09You did not deserve this one.
17:10I mean, the defense was great.
17:13And, hey, hey, hey, hey.
17:15Hey.
17:16The point is, Doofus Franklin, catch the football on third down.
17:21Real quick.
17:21Tom.
17:21Tom and Alamo's been real patient.
17:23Hey, Tom.
17:24Fire away.
17:24We've got about a minute.
17:25What's up?
17:27All right.
17:27So, I like the way the Niners handled the trade deadline.
17:31And here's why.
17:32No team in the history of the NFL has ever gone from a losing record to winning the Lombardi
17:37Trophy the very next season.
17:39It's never happened.
17:41And I think in this case, if it does happen, it's probably going to be some team that goes
17:46maybe eight and nine, just a game under .500, and then wins it the next year.
17:50Is that a fact, Tom?
17:51The Niners, they're...
17:52Is that a fact?
17:53That is a true fact.
17:54That's a stat.
17:55No team has ever gone from a losing record to winning the Super Bowl the following season.
17:59I looked it up.
18:00Interesting.
18:01And in this case, the Niners were five games below .500 last year.
18:06This was, even if everybody was healthy, Bosa, Warner, everybody, they still were not going
18:13to win a Lombardi Trophy this year.
18:16That doesn't mean that they couldn't make the playoffs, even in their depleted state.
18:20But you don't want to give up day one or day two draft picks just to make the playoffs.
18:26That's something you do when you're really in the hunt, like two years ago, and you really
18:30have a shot at winning the Lombardi Trophy.
18:32Yeah.
18:33And they don't have that right now.
18:34Tom, thanks so much.
18:35Like, again, I'm not saying the Niners are doing it wrong.
18:39I'm just pointing it out that I don't think the front office believes in this year that
18:46much.
18:47And right now, yeah, I'm kind of with them.
18:50I'm kind of with them.
18:51I hate saying it.
18:52They're six and three.
18:53I wanted them to do something at the deadline just because I want to keep watching football,
18:58and I'd like a sack more than, I don't know, once a month.
19:00But, yeah, they don't believe it.
19:04Look at their actions.
19:05Look at what they're doing.
