00:00Jared Goff, Jared Goff, I want Levi's Stadium to ring from the upper deck down through the
00:08suites into the field. Brock Purdy! Brock Purdy! When's that chant going to happen?
00:16I mean, I went to the Lions 49ers game last year, the one that didn't matter, and Jared
00:24Goff did win that one, and the Jared Goff chant was happening at that game, but it was here!
00:32Now, they were heading to the playoffs, and neither's won.
00:34And he's from here, so I'm sure there were some Goff loyalists.
00:37It wasn't people wearing Marin Catholic jerseys.
00:40Easy.
00:40They were wearing Lions jerseys. Yeah, I agree.
00:42You know what's funny about that game? You brought up the Netflix series quarterback.
00:45Yeah.
00:46I have finished it, and when they get to that part of the season, they skip right over that
00:50game entirely.
00:51Whoop!
00:52They jumped right ahead to the final week of the season, which was Lions-Vikings, winner
00:58wins the division and gets the one seed.
01:00Oh, that's because there was no drama in that game.
01:02Yeah, but it's just, you know, where the Niners were at that point, kind of sad.
01:05Yeah, that game was super fun, because you could just be like, let's just eat food and
01:10scream and yell with no pressure.
01:13And watch Jake Moody miss field goals.
01:15And Jake Moody would miss field goals, and everybody would score touchdowns on almost every
01:19drive.
01:20What was the final score?
01:21It was, I don't know, 40-something to 30-something, 42-38, something crazy.
01:26There was just stuff flying all over the place the whole day.
01:29And then also, I do remember this, and this is self-serving, but the fantasy championship
01:35that I just gave credit to Jaden Daniels for, Jaden had done something on Sunday that
01:43brought me back, back, back, back, but then I still, I needed like two points from Jawan
01:51Jennings.
01:52That's it.
01:53That's it.
01:54That's it.
01:55That's it.
01:56I needed like a catch.
01:57And so, dude, it was a great night.
01:58It was just feed up.
01:59Let's eat M&Ms.
02:00It's 42-38.
02:01And what?
02:0240-34 was the final.
02:0340-34.
02:04There you go.
02:05Seven catches for Jawan.
02:06He did fumble.
02:07That's okay.
02:08And it cost you two points, but you're fine.
02:10No, in my league, it cost you six.
02:11Oh, wow.
02:12It cost you six.
02:13But what do you have?
02:14Seven catches for what?
02:1567.
02:16Okay, seven catches.
02:17Enough.
02:18Yeah, plenty.
02:19We're good.
02:20We're good.
02:21That's a dub.
02:22Jose.
02:23Hi, Joe.
02:24Thank you for calling Willard and Dibbs.
02:25What's up?
02:26Hey, thanks for taking my call.
02:28How are you?
02:29We're great.
02:30How are you, Joe?
02:32Good, good.
02:33Hey, Brock's good.
02:34But Jared Goff is much better quarterback.
02:36Just superior quarterback.
02:38And I'll tell you why.
02:40Right?
02:41Jared Goff took two perennial losers to championship games in a Super Bowl.
02:45He did it with the Rams and he did it with the Lions.
02:48And did you ever watch Waterboy when Adam Sandler calls a wrestling show?
02:53All right.
02:54Captain Insano.
02:55I have seen Waterboy.
02:57It's been a minute, Joe.
02:58It's been a minute.
03:00Okay.
03:01So Captain Insano is his coach in Detroit right now.
03:05So that's why they lost that game at Levi.
03:08That championship game at Levi should not have been played there.
03:11Because Captain Insano went for it in fourth down every freaking time
03:16and cost him home field.
03:18Right?
03:19Well, that's an opinion, Joe.
03:20That's not a fact.
03:21That's an opinion.
03:23I'm sorry?
03:25That's not a fact.
03:26That's an opinion.
03:27You can have that opinion.
03:29But I don't think you can just outwardly pull out a Sharpie
03:32and say that Dan Campbell is the reason that game was at Levi's
03:36because he cost him a bunch of stuff.
03:38It's funny you say that.
03:39We're talking about the quarterback doc on Netflix.
03:42They literally did a whole episode about how Dan Campbell goes for it on
03:46fourth down and how it's helped them out.
03:48And Jared Goff loves it.
03:50Okay.
03:51Did it help him in the Dallas game that season that cost him home field?
03:54Debatably, no.
03:55No, they lost that game.
03:56It did not.
03:57That's why the game was there.
03:58But you could do the same thing with the 49ers who also lost a game that
04:02year basically on purpose by sitting all their people that they probably
04:06wouldn't have lost.
04:07Do you know what I mean?
04:08We could go round and round on that if we wanted to.
04:12Okay.
04:13I'll tell you right now.
04:14Would you rather hire Shanahan or Captain Insano?
04:17Shanahan?
04:18Yeah, for sure.
04:19I like them both, Joe.
04:21How about this?
04:22I would tell you it depends on the situation.
04:24If I needed somebody to completely come in and change an emotional culture,
04:30I would take Dan Campbell.
04:32If I need somebody to come in and get the right personnel and call some plays
04:37and all of that stuff and be a little bit less rah-rah and a little more
04:41functional, then I'll take Kyle Shanahan.
04:44Okay.
04:45So that's another topic.
04:46So let's go back to Goff.
04:47Yeah.
04:48He lost Todd Gurley, won a championship game in New Orleans,
04:51the toughest place to play, tougher than Levi, went to the Super Bowl,
04:55fell short without Todd Gurley.
04:57Todd Gurley's equivalent is McCaffrey.
04:59What happened to Brock?
05:02Six games.
05:04I just, Joe, you have wonderful points that are made from like very,
05:10very kind of-
05:12Very specific.
05:13Slanted, specific things that you present as facts,
05:17starting with, for instance, that Todd Gurley is Christian McCaffrey,
05:20which is a laughable statement.
05:22I know that he was coming off a wonderful year.
05:25Todd Gurley has never been Christian McCaffrey for a minute in his life.
05:28He's better.
05:31All right.
05:32Hey, Joe, appreciate you calling.
05:34Yeah.
05:35I just wonder about, like, Captain Insano, as he-
05:40Which is a fun nickname.
05:41It's a fun nickname.
05:42It is fun.
05:43They were fourth in the league in fourth down conversions at 68%.
05:47So, he goes for it a lot.
05:49Washington, Cleveland, Chicago, they went for it more often than Detroit.
05:53They went for it the fourth most often times, and they converted it 68% of the time.
05:59So, when you do that, when you go for it on fourth a lot, there are going to be times where it burns you,
06:04that's just the way he's going to go about it.
06:06On the Boxer and Gerson work injury attorney's text line, and I'm going to flatly say, based on the years that have gone by,
06:12I do not remember if this is true or not, but we do have a listener that would like to say that Captain Insano was from Billy Madison, not Waterboy.
06:18Okay.
06:19Yeah.
06:20I don't know the answer to that.
06:22I don't either.
06:23I don't know.
06:24I saw both movies, but it has been a thousand years.
06:26I've seen all of those Adam Sandler movies, and they're all the same movie.
06:32Right, and they're funny.
06:33I mean, they are, I don't know if they hold up that well.
06:37Maybe not.
06:38Like, Happy Gilmore, now there's Happy Gilmore 2.
06:41Did you watch that?
06:42I haven't seen Happy Gilmore recently.
06:43I have.
06:44I watched 2.
06:45Have you watched 2 yet?
06:46I have not seen 2.
06:47I have no desire to see 2.
06:48Just because I think that it's going to be even more stupid, insipid, than I even think.
06:54Oh, it completely is.
06:56Right.
06:57But then again, like, I always think this is funny when people are like, oh, well, this is.
07:01No, I have no expectation for it to be like the English patient.
07:05But Happy Gilmore 1 is absolutely ridiculous.
07:08But it's beyond ridiculous.
07:10And maybe when that hit, and that must have been, I mean, I'm afraid to even guess the year, probably 1995, I'd say.
07:17That's what I was going to say.
07:18I was in a different mind space as far as, like, allocating my entertainment bandwidth.
07:23You know what that is.
07:24It's an allocation sensation is what that is.
07:27Yeah.
07:281996.
07:29Oh, it's close.
07:301996.
07:31So, 30 years ago, I'm in my mid-20s.
07:33And yeah, I'm here for a guy in a hockey jersey putting with a hockey stick.
07:38By the way, Captain Insano is indeed from the Waterboys.
07:42So, our caller was right.
07:43Caller right.
07:44Yeah.
07:45Apologies, text line.
07:46Texter wrong.
07:47Yeah.
07:48Because the texter also called the caller useless.
07:51Well.
07:52You got to backtrack that now.
07:53You got to back that thing up.
07:55Anyway.
07:56Whatever.
07:57It's a funny nickname.
07:59And, like, you could have, and I'm sure in Detroit they have, you could have a wonderful
08:03debate over whether or not Dan Campbell is right or wrong for the whole fourth down thing.
08:08You ever want to have a fun conversation with that?
08:11I'd get you in touch with Ephraim, who I do the Sunday show with.
08:14He can't stand what Dan Campbell does on fourth down.
08:17Really?
08:18But I also know that on the sideline, it's very, very popular.
08:22Do you know what the episode I just watched?
08:24And, Grandy, you'll probably remember this one if you've done the whole doc already.
08:28So, they're profiling a game between the Lions and the Packers.
08:32Probably call it week 10, week 11, something like that.
08:36First place in the division is on the line.
08:38Very high scoring game.
08:40And it comes down to a final drive where I think they're tied at 31.
08:45And the Lions are at the 20, and it's fourth and a foot.
08:49But they're at the opponent's 20 with 43 seconds to go on the clock.
08:54What weirdo would not kick a field goal there?
08:58You kick the field goal with 40 seconds left to go to take the lead, right?
09:03But it's fourth and a foot, and the Packers have no timeouts.
09:06And I'm telling you, Goff and Campbell, they call timeout,
09:10and they have this quick discussion with one another on the sideline,
09:13and they can't figure out which one they want to do.
09:16They're like, do you want to?
09:17I don't know.
09:18Do you want to?
09:19What do you want to do?
09:20Ah, gosh.
09:21And Campbell goes, we've got to kick the field goal.
09:23Let's kick the field goal.
09:25And then they're like, all right, we're going to commercial.
09:27And they come back, and he's like, bleep it.
09:30Let's end this thing right now.
09:32He couldn't hold it through the timeout.
09:34Sent him out there.
09:35This is the one where Jared tripped and fell over,
09:38but then handed it to David Montgomery.
09:40Yep, he gets seven yards.
09:41He runs for the first down.
09:42They kick the field goal.
09:43Game over.
09:44And then it cuts to Campbell, and he's like,
09:46I just didn't think it was fair to put our defense in that position
09:50because a bunch of guys had gotten hurt.
09:52We had just signed some people off of the street,
09:55and I didn't want to do that to them.
09:57That's what he said, and they won the game.
09:59They won the game.
10:00I mean, I don't know who's right.
10:01I'm looking at it here, fourth and one with 43 seconds left,
10:06and the Lions used their first timeout.
10:08So they had some wiggle room.
10:10Totally.
10:11And then you F it.
10:13He says he goes, we're kicking.
10:15We got to kick it.
10:16We got to kick it.
10:17And then they're like, this is all brought to you by Budweiser.
10:19Totally.
10:20And they go back, and he's like, screw it.
10:22Let's go for it.
10:23And Montgomery gets seven yards, and then Goff kneels,
10:26and they call timeout again, and then they win it.
10:28And Goff comes off the field screaming at Campbell.
10:30Great bleeping call.
10:32Great bleeping.
10:33I mean, he's effing this and that.
10:36He's so fired up.
10:37So he loved it.
10:39I don't know who's right.
10:40Well, and I do think, to the caller's point,
10:43that's one thing that you can't really quantify
10:45when you talk about Captain Insano,
10:47because if you're on the offensive line,
10:49and you're thinking this guy is crazy,
10:51we got to get at least a yard here to win this game,
10:54and then it works, you're going to feel some type of way
10:57about your coach.
10:59Meanwhile, if you look at the fourth down stats,
11:02last year the 49ers were tied for 29th in times they go for it on fourth down.
11:10They went for it .5 times per game,
11:13which is to say they went for it on fourth down about eight or nine times all year.
11:18And so that's an approach.
11:21Detroit does it differently.
11:22And I'm not saying that one is better than the other,
11:24but if you're on the offense, and you're in a spot like Shanahan often is,
11:29where it's fourth and two, and you're at your own 41 yard line,
11:33or fourth and one, and it's like send out Wisnowski,
11:36and God, could you just go for it please?
11:39I do bet most 49er fans want Kyle Shanahan to have a little bit more Dan Campbell in him.
11:44No doubt.
11:45But not all of it.
11:46Not all of it.
11:48Right?
11:49I bet Grandy agrees with that.
11:51He's got a big mouth full of turkey sandwich.
11:53But like a little bit more Dan Campbell in Kyle would be good.
11:56Not all of it though.
11:58You can keep some of your Campbell.
12:00Just give him a little bit of it.
12:02Is that fair?
12:03Yeah, they're on two extremes.
12:04Shanahan should meet in the middle.
12:06Yeah, but so should Campbell.
12:08Like calm down, bro.
12:10Seriously.
12:11Like that game that I was just referencing,
12:14I guess Goff went home the night before the game and told his wife,
12:17we're going for it on all the fourth downs.
12:20And then they kind of did.
12:22That wasn't the first.
12:23That was like the eighth fourth down they went for.
12:25And you saw it in the NFC title game here,
12:28and it burned him.
12:29Yeah, well.
12:30It burned him, and it wasn't his fault.
12:32It burned him because, I mean.
12:33What's his name?
12:34Drop the ball.
12:35Reynolds.
12:36But that's part of the calculus, isn't it?
12:39You have to.
12:40That's why you've got to hesitate to go for it on fourth down.
12:43One person makes a mistake, you lose.
12:46Yeah.
12:47But, I mean, you make the play, and you win.
12:49Right.
12:50And I'm just looking at the numbers,
12:51and Detroit had the fewest punts per game last year.
12:56If you're the Lions punter, you're thinking,
12:58why do I even bother showing up, right?
13:00I think it's a great job.
13:01Might be the greatest job in the NFL.
13:03Yep.
13:04Cast the check the same.
13:05Exactly.
13:06All you've got to do is punt a few times in practice.
13:08Go play golf.
13:09We'll bring you out once or twice on Sunday.
13:11Yep.
13:12That's about it, right?
13:13Yeah.
13:14Do you guys remember what the Lions' return was for the Stafford trade,
13:19in addition to golf?
13:21Well, it was draft picks.
13:24It was like two or three draft picks.
13:25Two first-round picks and a third-round pick.
13:27The Lions turned some of those picks around and made other moves with them,
13:31and then got more picks back in return.
13:33As a result of those picks and the ensuing trades that they made,
13:36those players that they got for Stafford, in addition to golf,
13:40turned out to be Jameer Gibbs, star running back,
13:43Sam Laporta, star tight end,
13:45Jamison Williams, probably going to become a star wide receiver.
13:49Yeah, wide receiver two right now.
13:51And then a couple of other players who are starters and play for them as well.
13:54But at least like three legit, really good players.
13:57Wow.
13:58In addition to golf.
13:59Wow.
14:00Yeah?
14:01And the Rams would do the deal again.
14:02Yeah, the Rams won the Super Bowl.
14:03They won the Super Bowl.
14:04Both teams loved that trade.
14:06No doubt.
14:07I loved that trade.
14:09Jordan Hicks ERA is over six in Boston.
14:12Just a quick aside.
14:13Just thought I'd throw that in there for those of you who are worried about Rafi Devers.
14:17Right.
14:18I mean...
14:19What did the Giants give up?
14:20Tibbs isn't even with the Sox anymore.
14:22No.
14:23Flipped him for Dustin May.
14:24Harrison hasn't even pitched for Sox.
14:26Harrison's in the minors.
14:28Hicks ERA is over six.
14:30They flipped Tibbs for Dustin May.
14:32He got lit up yesterday.
14:33Right.
14:34And I dare you to name the fourth guy in that trade.
14:36Oh, he's like 18 years old.
14:37Right.
14:38Somebody.
14:39He's a guy.
14:40Somebody.
14:41Yeah, somebody.
