00:00Kyle Shanahan, opening injury comments on the conference call today.
00:04There's still no injuries from the game.
00:07Guys who missed the game, Ricky Purcell and Neve,
00:10we're hoping to get him back in practice Wednesday.
00:12Brock with his toe will continue to progress him.
00:15Should get more here this week.
00:18And then Alfred Collins with his hip will continue to evaluate him,
00:21see how he is when he comes in Wednesday.
00:23Okay, first of all, largely a good report.
00:25No new injuries.
00:26I don't know if he's used that phrase all year.
00:30And secondly, there's some hope that Ricky's going to get back to practice on Wednesday.
00:35And I only used his first name because for the second week in a row,
00:37last week I thought it was just sort of like a twisty of the tongue.
00:41I'm with you right now.
00:42Are we saying Ricky Purcell's name wrong or is Kyle?
00:46Kyle, and it's been more than two weeks.
00:48It's every time he says his name.
00:50It's Purcell.
00:51Like, what the hell is going on?
00:53I have no idea.
00:54Call Harm Edwards and find out if the guy's name is actually Ricky Purcell.
00:59Hello?
01:00You play to win the game.
01:03No wonder he keeps getting hurt.
01:05His coach doesn't even know his name.
01:07Oh, boy.
01:07No, I mean, come on.
01:09First round draft capital and you don't know his name?
01:12Or do we not know his name?
01:13Maybe we're doing it wrong.
01:14I mean, yeah.
01:15Listen to it again.
01:17There's still no injuries from the game.
01:19Guys who missed the game, Ricky Purcell and Eve,
01:22we're hoping to get him back in practice Wednesday.
01:24Purcell?
01:24Brock with his toe will continue to progress him.
01:27Should get more here this week.
01:30And then Alfred Collins with his hip will continue to evaluate him,
01:33see how he is when he comes in Wednesday.
01:35He makes him sound like a small version of what women carry on their shoulder.
01:40Ooh.
01:40Right?
01:41Yeah.
01:41Ricky Purcell.
01:43What the, like, I don't know what this stuff is.
01:45It's not a purse.
01:47It's a Purcell.
01:47It's a Purcell.
01:48Yeah.
01:48Yeah.
01:49Yeah.
01:49Yeah.
01:50Smaller.
01:51You know, if you only got a few things to carry.
01:53That's right.
01:53We'll make up something like that.
01:55Yeah.
01:56You know, somewhere between a purse and a fanny pack.
01:59Exactly.
01:59It's a Purcell.
02:00A clutch.
02:01Right.
02:01But it's a Purcell.
02:03Clutch.
02:03The 49ers, they've been kind of clutch sometimes this year.
02:06Yep.
02:06Anyway, these are the kinds of things that bother me.
02:10Not what uniform the team is wearing and what number you wear.
02:14I get bothered by, are we saying the guy's name wrong?
02:19Possibly.
02:20If we're not, then he is, and I'm bothered by that.
02:24Yeah.
02:25What are we doing?
02:26His job is not to pronounce people's names right.
02:29Well, but except, like, I don't know, ours is.
02:31That is our job.
02:33So this matters to me.
02:34Pazemski.
02:35Yeah.
02:38Oh, my God.
02:39Ricky Purcell.
02:41Anyway, all right.
02:42Here's the next part.
02:43And the question is in here.
02:44So this is about Purdy and what Kyle needs to see.
02:47With all this time off, do you want to see Wednesday, Thursday, Friday practices from Brock?
02:53Pretty much no limitations before you started?
02:56Yes.
02:57Yeah, that's kind of what we want to see it, want to hear from him, and we want three aggressive
03:01practices and want to make sure he feels good after all of them each day, too.
03:05Okay.
03:05Joe Burrow has had his practice window open for the Cincinnati Bengals.
03:10He also had turf toe.
03:11His was considered the most serious variety and, in fact, had surgery right away.
03:17And for all we know, Joe Burrow might play this year before Brock does.
03:20Now, I know Brock got a game in there.
03:23The Niners lost it against the Jags.
03:25He got re-injured.
03:26But we as a group were having this conversation earlier today.
03:29The Burrow thing has kind of triggered some members of the group into thinking that the
03:3449ers totally botched this.
03:39I'm going to admit what I guess I can only call, like, there's a little bit of a piece
03:44of Swiss cheese in me talking about injury stuff, and here's what I'm getting at.
03:52I just, I don't know how, as a fan or a member of the media, we can ever hold players and teams
04:05fully accountable for the guesswork that is involved in coming back from an injury or
04:15for how long your injury takes to heal.
04:19I, do you remember when Kawhi Leonard wouldn't come back for the Spurs?
04:24It's so good.
04:25And Tony Parker finally ripped him and Tony went, I had that injury and I came back in
04:32a month.
04:33I believe he could have come back soon now, but I do not know why he did not come back.
04:38And Kawhi's been out for six.
04:40And I did a whole thing.
04:41I'm like, Tony, who the hell are you?
04:44That's not your body.
04:46You do your injury, he'll do his injury.
04:49There are obviously little differences in every injury and every body is different, and there
04:54is so much guesswork and so much that's out of control.
05:00So I'll admit that up front.
05:01I have a very hard time getting mad at a player or a team for all of the things that
05:10go into return to play.
05:12I do too in terms of, I do, but every injury is different.
05:19And I do think that if you have a garden variety, whatever, broken wrist, for example, we know
05:25that it's four to six and that's going to be the deal.
05:27And you come back in four to six.
05:29And I don't even know if that's the right number for a broken wrist, but you get the
05:33point, which is broken bone, boom, dot, dot, dot, you get it, this is the thing.
05:39Turf toe is one of those ones where it could either be one to two weeks or your life.
05:44Like, I mean, Patrick Willis, career over.
05:48Right.
05:48And I don't even know if his career was going to be over anyway.
05:51Yeah, I don't think it would.
05:52If he had done that when he was 24, his career would not have been over.
05:55Right.
05:55But I do think that turf toe, and part of it's the name, turf toe, we don't even really know
06:00what that is.
06:01If there was a name for it, like if there was a ligament that we all knew, and if you
06:05have like a grade one, grade two, grade three, tear of that, a sprain of that ligament.
06:10Totally.
06:11Like the ACL, for example, we know like a torn ACL, and the other one is in baseball, like,
06:17oh, Tommy John, nine to 12 months.
06:19We know, boom, you get Tommy John, you're gone for nine to 12 months, we know that, we'll
06:24see you whenever.
06:25And the other one that I'm thinking about is the Brandon Iuke, and I did this last year
06:30when he tore his ACL and his MCL.
06:34And his everything else.
06:35And when you do that, like your return to play is, it's like a three-month window between
06:42like, it was either going to be like late July or early November.
06:46And here we are, and we're on the back end of what the normal RTP, return to play protocol
06:53is.
06:54And so to your point, Mark, you just never know.
06:57And so Brock Purdy had turf toe, and they thought a couple weeks, you're back, and he played,
07:02and he got hurt again, and it got worse, and now he's been out for six weeks.
07:06And so we don't know his, Joe's, we don't know anybody's turf toe relative to anybody else.
07:12Let's go ahead and out the member of our family that's all ticked off about this, because
07:16you can tell he's chomping at the bit.
07:17Go ahead, Grandy.
07:18Why did the Niners woefully mishandle this?
07:21Well, I'm surprised you feel the way that you feel, Willie, because you're the biggest
07:24fan of Brock Purdy at this station.
07:26I am.
07:26And the Niners rushed it.
07:28In the whole bay.
07:29Yeah, okay.
07:29Go ahead.
07:30Please.
07:31Didn't want to overstate it.
07:32He's the president of Purdy Stan.
07:34Impossible to overstate your love for Brock, I suppose.
07:36Yeah, I mean, maybe his wife, but go ahead.
07:38And they did him a disservice by playing him too early, and the whole season is lost for
07:44Brock now.
07:45Yeah, but see.
07:45Maybe the season for the Niners is not a loss as a result of Purdy's injury.
07:49That's because Mack has played pretty darn well.
07:51But for you, I feel like you should think that the Niners season has been lost because
07:55of the way they handled Brock's injury, because you think so highly of Brock.
07:58Well, first of all, they're 6-4, so the season has not been lost.
08:01That's number one.
08:01But number two.
08:02Would they have won a couple more games if Brock was fully healthy?
08:04Maybe.
08:04Maybe.
08:05But I look at it this way.
08:08Think of the way you just said that.
08:10That the 49ers did Brock a disservice by playing him.
08:17Well, what if Brock, and I bet he did, badly pushed to play?
08:21Well, I'm sure he did, but it's not his decision to make.
08:24But how are the 49ers supposed to accurately and perfectly know exactly what's going to
08:32happen when he goes back out on the field?
08:34They can't feel what he feels.
08:35Well, you can't exactly predict anything that's ever going to happen.
08:38Oh, there you go.
08:39But they said all the right things leading up to it.
08:41Turf toes, really tough.
08:42It lasts a whole lot longer than you ever think.
08:45Brock, we're going to play it safe.
08:46We recommend you get surgery because now, even when he comes back, Shanann has said
08:52he's not going to be 100%.
08:54When Joe Burrow comes back, he's going to be 100% because he had surgery to fix the issue.
08:59But you don't know that.
09:00You don't know that.
09:01Surgery to fix the issue does not automatically mean 100%, and I'm going to keep pushing back
09:06on 100% because you go through the locker room.
09:09Go Wednesday.
09:10Go to the locker room.
09:12Stand in the middle, right during the open media portion, and go, come meet me in the
09:16middle.
09:16Who's 100%?
09:18You can be by yourself.
09:19You know what I mean.
09:21The surgery addresses the issue much more than Brock just hanging out does.
09:25But only the most significant turf toe injuries even call for surgery.
09:31I don't even know if what Joe got would have been appropriate for Brock.
09:36I'm not going to act like I know that.
09:39So I know that we love to sit here in definitive land where it's like, it didn't go well,
09:45so you're a bunch of morons who mishandled this.
09:48I think we've got to offer the grace of like, man, there's no way to have a perfect definitive
09:56answer when it comes to this stuff.
09:58They clearly thought Ricky Pearsall was coming back in two weeks.
10:02They clearly thought that.
10:04You'll never convince me otherwise.
10:06They were wrong.
10:07They were wrong.
10:09They didn't push him.
10:10I don't know if they're gun shy now.
10:12I have no idea.
10:14But I just think all of these things are so delicate and they all need to be handled as
10:20their own story.
10:21That's all.
10:22That's all I'm saying.
10:23Well, if you don't want to assign blame for what's happened, that's fine.
10:26I suppose I can understand it.
10:28But the bottom line is Willard and Dibbs feels like the Niners have been wrong about this
10:32kind of thing often recently.
10:35I mean, Ricky Pearsall is the other one.
10:36Like, they just flat out misread both of these injuries.
10:39Absolutely.
10:40Well, I mean, but to be...
10:43Ayuk, too.
10:43He was supposed to return week 10 and week 10's come and gone and his window isn't even
10:46open.
10:47I was going to ask you about that if you thought that they've mishandled that.
10:50But you're talking about two players who they've not put back out on the field.
10:54They have played that more conservative.
10:55Yeah, but just misreading the injury situation in the first place.
10:58Yeah, to me...
10:58I just don't think that it's as cut and dry as that when you have these types of injuries.
11:04That's all I'm saying.
11:05And, you know, I'm not a doctor, but I'm a radio doctor.
11:08And when you've got Ricky Pearsall's injury, which is a PCL, which is what McCaffrey had,
11:14and Christian McCaffrey got hurt, and he just collapsed.
11:18He crumbled.
11:18And it's like, okay, you're done.
11:20Your PCL is so bad that we don't want to play you anymore.
11:23I don't think that Ricky Pearsall's was that bad.
11:26And if it was that bad, like, for example, Mikel Williams, torn ACL.
11:30And you look at it, and it's a torn ACL, and it's a clean tear.
11:34Okay, you know what that is.
11:35That is six to nine months.
11:37You're done.
11:38You don't play football anymore.
11:40And Nick Bosa, same thing.
11:42You're done.
11:42Fred Warner.
11:43Like, what happened to him?
11:44Well, he might be able to come back in December or January.
11:48We don't know.
11:49But probably not.
11:50But you know what that is.
11:52And so those are much more cut and dry.
11:54And when Ricky Pearsall has a knee injury that's a PCL, and it's not a total tear,
12:00it's a little bit more, I think, gray area.
12:03And I also believe that's where Brock Purdy's was.
12:06Like, Joe Burrows was so bad that, oh, man.
12:09No question about it.
12:10Surgery.
12:11You're gone three months.
12:12He couldn't walk.
12:13Right.
12:13He couldn't walk off the field, barely.
12:15And it's been two months, and now he's, you know, hopefully going to be back in three
12:19or four weeks.
12:19I don't even know if he'll play again.
12:21Yeah, like, let's not act like we know the end of that story either.
12:24We don't.
12:24And I think that when you have these tougher calls on injuries, I think that you have to,
12:30you know, look at it.
12:31And for me, I'm always going to lean toward the doctor.
12:34And I believe in the Niners medical staff.
12:36I don't know them, but I think that they're mostly competent from what I've seen.
12:41Like, George Kittle.
12:42He had the hamstring, and it was like, oh, boy, that was so bad.
12:46Four weeks.
12:47Boom.
12:47You're done.
12:48You're going on IR for sure.
12:50And so I think that these other ones are a little bit gray area.
12:53I agree.
12:54It's a tough call.
12:55I mean, 925 text line.
12:57They did themselves a disservice for having two guys that could have been on IR.
13:00I'm always curious as to why fans are so activated by get them on IR.
13:05Who cares?
13:06It's not like they were going to do anything.
13:08What were they going to do with those roster spots?
13:09Call somebody up from the practice squad and do what?
13:13If you're on IR, you don't get to be at practice.
13:15Right.
13:16For four weeks.
13:16Right.
13:17You don't get to run on the side.
13:18You don't get to do any of the things that you need to do to get back.
13:21And fans, you should know this.
13:23You only get eight spots all year, and they've already used six.
13:28So that would have been it.
13:30That'd be it.
13:30That'd be it.
13:31Right.
13:31So you have eight spots of IR designated to return, and if you don't think that these
13:37guys are definitely going to be IR, then you don't do that.
13:39Yeah.
13:40And we're barely over the halfway point of the season.
13:42So that's what we're going to do with you.
