00:00Are they just playing for the camera? Is that real conversation?
00:02They're going over lunch orders.
00:04They're going over lunch orders.
00:05Coach is a big club sandwich guy.
00:07Club sandwich. That was my next question.
00:10So Fulk made a 35-yarder. He missed an extra point.
00:14A slightly underrated aspect of that is they just burned one of the Steelers' timeouts.
00:19So whether they were planning on going forward or not,
00:21they did take away a timeout for Aaron Rodgers to use if it gets under two.
00:2418-year veteran Nick Fulk from 51 yards away.
00:32The kick from Fulk, and he massages it through.
00:39Jets take a 19-10 lead.
00:41Massages it a little bit.
00:47So the Jets do have points to show for another try.
00:51They've got the lead here in the season opener.
01:00Welcome back. Jets in front.
01:0219-10.
01:03Another season of the NFL means another season of Slime Time.
01:09And part of the deal, we will put you on TV if you're willing to wear the slime hat.
01:15You have to wear it for the entire week, though, not just here for the game.
01:18But that could go well in certain jobs.
01:22Others, not so much.
01:25Kickoff from Fulk.
01:27And Caleb Johnson is going to take the knee, and it'll come out to the 35-yard line.
01:33I love pass rushing, so I want to talk about these Jets' pass rushes.
01:37Earlier in the game, we had Quinn and Williams.
01:38All he did, put hands on, shed, and then get Aaron Rodgers to the sack.
01:41And then Will McDonald.
01:42This is power.
01:43This is a bull rush back into the lap of the quarterback.
01:46Make him step up and then get the sack.
01:49Beautiful play.
01:49Will McDonald is from Wisconsin.
01:52Went to Waukesha North right down the road from my high school.
01:55Then went on to Iowa State.
01:57So, unfortunately, I didn't get him at Pewaukee High School or the Wisconsin Badgers.
02:01But a phenomenal player, and it's really fun to see him come into his own as a pass rusher.
02:06So far, no balance here for Pittsburgh.
02:09They have just 14 rushing yards.
02:12It's a team that was 11th in rushing last season at over 127 per game.
02:18Warren in there.
02:20Rodgers figs it to him.
02:21That pass is high.
02:22It's handled.
02:23Metcalf.
02:24It's incomplete.
02:27Couldn't secure it.
02:29Sauce Gardner gets in there.
02:31NFL Today update.
02:32Back to Adam Schein.
02:33All right, a lot of chatter about the Bengals needing to get off to a good start.
02:37Here's Joe Burrow to Noah Fence.
02:39Newly acquired tight end.
02:41It's 14-7.
02:42Cincy in Cleveland.
02:43I and JJ, back to you.
02:46Battle of Ohio right now.
02:47Bengals in front.
02:49Here, Pittsburgh and New York going head-to-head.
02:52Late stages of the second quarter.
02:58Long count for Rodgers.
03:01Rush is on.
03:01Rodgers gets rid of it.
03:03Finds the open man down the sideline.
03:06Calvin Austin.
03:07So that's been a question for the Steelers.
03:10Who, other than DK Metcalf, can be a part of the passing game at the wide receiver position?
03:15Yeah, they really like Calvin Austin.
03:17He's fast.
03:17He's quick.
03:18He can be one of those lateral guys that works across the field.
03:21And here, he just finds an open soft spot in the zone.
03:24And Rodgers has time to hit him.
03:26A little pitch and catch.
03:28But they need to get this offense rolling a little bit.
03:30The run game hasn't been there.
03:31So now they're putting it on the pass.
03:34It's good for 30 yards.
03:36And just like that, the Steelers are at the Jets' 35.
03:39Inside run.
03:43Warren slicing to the 28.
03:48Jalen Warren got a two-year, $17.5 million extension.
03:53So the Steelers showing him they believe in him.
03:56Rodgers and the Steelers on the move.
04:02They're down on the scoreboard, though.
04:0419-10 in Jersey.
04:09The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Wingstop.
04:15Bring the flavor.
04:17Order at wingstop.com.
04:19And by Capital One.
04:22What's in your wallet?
04:26On the other side of the Hudson, at the Meadowlands, 19-10.
04:34The Jets leading the Steelers.
04:36Pittsburgh, they've got time to work with here.
04:42Time to possession in favor of the Jets.
04:46Anytime you hit the two-minute warning,
04:47you start looking at the timeout situation,
04:49how far you need to go.
04:50But this is an eternity.
04:51You don't even need to worry about any sort of two-minute drill.
04:53Aaron Rodgers has the full offense as it's disposal.
04:56Here.
04:57It's a second down and three.
05:01Gainwell in the backfield.
05:04Gainwell got a slow start off the line
05:08and then could not accelerate.
05:10Falls forward and sets up third and short.
05:13Tackled by Quincy Williams.
05:15If you get a stop here, Aaron Glenn certainly starts thinking about using his own timeouts.
05:23He's got three of them.
05:24Get the ball back in your guys' hands.
05:27But big play here.
05:29Remember, Pittsburgh does get the ball to start the second half.
05:32If they can get a first down here, then a chance to stack it up with a score and receive the kickoff in the third.
05:44Third down and two.
05:45Rodgers extending.
05:46Rodgers extending, and it will be enough.
05:50John O. Smith with the grab at the first down.
05:55Aaron didn't like what he saw originally.
05:57He changed the play to a quick little hitter to John O.
06:00So a timeout taken.
06:06Jets use it.
06:09Aaron Rodgers is 9 of 12, 135 yards and a touchdown.
06:14And he mentioned it regarding tight ends, four of them.
06:18And he believes all four bring a little something different to the Steelers' offense.
06:22He said this is the best tight end room he's had in 21 years of playing.
06:27Now, part of that is due to the fact that he comes from an 11-personnel background where you just don't carry as many tight ends.
06:33But he went down the list, and every single one of these tight ends brings something to this offense that he loves.
06:39I mean, you see Darnell Washington, just a massive guy, obviously can block, but can also post up and catch fade balls in the end zone.
06:47You've got Friar Booth, who's sneaky, a bit of a zone beater.
06:51He's really, really good at finding the zones.
06:53You've got Johnny, who can run after the catch.
06:54And then you've got Cam Hayward, uh, Connor Hayward, who's a bit of a jack-of-all-trades.
06:59Oh, my brothers are going to be pissed at me for that.
07:02A minute 12 to go.
07:04First half, Gainwell.
07:06Oh, he lost the ball, but jumps on top of it.
07:11He tried to turn it upfield.
07:13Gainwell is not a big body.
07:15He's 5'9", 200.
07:17New York.
07:18And a timeout called by the Jets.
07:20We'll be back in 30 seconds after this from Under Armour.
07:26Thursday Night Football on Prime is back.
07:29It's on.
07:30Thursday Night Football returns as the Commanders face off against the Packers,
07:35and it all kicks off at Lambeau Field in an epic NFC showdown.
07:39Reining his way, touchdown, Green Bay, and they have the lead again.
07:44To the end.
07:45Show the touchdown.
07:47Is that passion?
07:48Extreme Thursday Night Football.
07:50Commanders, Packers, at 7 p.m. Eastern, only on front.
07:54The Jets had only 17 takeaways last season, 7th fewest in the NFL.
08:03They were trying to get one there with Gainwell.
08:08All right, if you get stopped here and the Jets call another timeout,
08:12you can then run the clock down if you want and kick it with not that much time left.
08:17So I'm trying to figure out that strategy.
08:221-0-7 on the clock.
08:24Second down and 10 for the Steelers.
08:27Rodgers looks.
08:29Rodgers throws.
08:30Up in the air.
08:32Calvin Austin climbs the ladder.
08:35First and goal.
08:36What a catch by Calvin Austin.
08:40You think of the Steelers offense, and you think of DK Metcalf going up in Moss and somebody,
08:44you don't necessarily first jump to Calvin Austin to be the one to go up and over.
08:49But what a grab.
08:5050-50 ball won by Austin.
08:53Steelers in business.
08:54Hand off.
08:55Warren is stonewalled.
08:57No game.
09:0037 seconds on the clock.
09:06So the Steelers take the timeout.
09:10Pittsburgh is knocking on the door.
09:11We're back in 30 seconds after this.
09:14Buy one Sonic Smasher and get another free.
09:19That's right.
09:20Buy one hand-smashed Angus Beef Sonic Smasher and get another free.
09:24It's the dual-threat quarterback of Burger Deals.
09:28Buy one, get one free in the Sonic app.
09:30Lowe's knows tackling projects now means you can football Sunday.
09:33We need a new fridge.
09:34This one has Kraft Ice on demand.
09:36More ice than me?
09:37Four kinds of ice, actually.
09:38Gonna need a bigger bucket.
09:40Like this one?
09:41Do you always have two bucket chains?
09:43I do.
09:44A lot of veteran additions to the Steelers, but this is still a young offensive line.
09:51Yes, but it's one that they're proud of, and it's one that they think can be great for the future.
09:55You talk about Zach Frazier in the middle, and when you hear the name Pouncey thrown around
10:00at center for the Pittsburgh Steelers, that's a big deal.
10:03And you know Mike Tomlin doesn't throw it around lightly, and he did it with Frazier.
10:08So much history at the center position in Pittsburgh.
10:15Second down and goal.
10:17John O. Smith on the puck pass.
10:21He got to the pylon, and he's in.
10:23Touchdown, Steelers.
10:25Arthur Smith is creative, and he makes the right call.
10:34Well, they haven't had much success inside against Harrison Phillips and Quinton Williams,
10:38so what do they do?
10:39They get their guy out on the edge.
10:41John O. Smith, they called him.
10:43An unbelievable athlete.
10:44Can do it all.
10:46Takes it to the pylon and in for the score.
10:48The versatility of Smith.
10:50He's now in year number nine.
10:54He's played for Tennessee, New England, Atlanta, Miami.
10:56Had his best season last year.
10:5888 catches, 884 yards, 8 touchdowns, and playing a big role in his first half of football
11:04as a member of the Steelers.
11:07Technically a touchdown pass for Aaron Rodgers.
11:09Mm-hmm.
11:13Extra point from Boswell.
11:14Rodgers is one of five quarterbacks, all time, with 500 career touchdowns.
11:20We're talking about Brady, Brees, Manning, Favre.
11:24Rodgers put another on the board for the Steelers.
11:31Coming up, Verizon Halftime Report.
11:33JB, Nate, Matt Ryan, Coach Cowher.
11:35Latest NFL scores and highlights week one.
11:37It's all coming up on the Verizon Halftime Report.
11:40I think this kickoff will kind of help dictate what's going to happen here
11:46if they kneel it out and take it into half
11:49or if they get something going on in the return
11:52and they let Justin Fields spin it a little bit with his one timeout in 32 seconds.
11:56We have had one punt in the first half.
11:59It came from Pittsburgh.
12:00Gibson return man from the four.
12:03Gibson got ahead of steam but then slowed down as he crossed the 30-yard line
12:09and he's dropped at the 33 by Carson Bruner,
12:13whose dad, Mark Bruner, was the longtime tight end for the Steelers.
12:18Bruner making his NFL debut out of Washington.
12:2227 seconds on the clock.
12:25I said the kickoff would tell us a lot.
12:27It did not tell us a lot.
12:30They could kneel it.
12:31They could throw it up.
12:32I don't know what they're going to do here.
12:33You know what?
12:34I respect that.
12:35He could have just gone silent.
12:36Instead, you refer to it.
12:39And we don't know.
12:40But it looks like they're going to at least look for something.
12:43Fields, you better look out.
12:45He does.
12:46Fields uncorks it.
12:47Sideline.
12:48Catch made.
12:50And then Wilson out of bounds.
12:52All right.
12:52So now you got a little chunk.
12:55You have one timeout left.
12:5619 seconds.
12:57You can work the sidelines.
13:00Now you go.
13:01So they pick up eight.
13:04Toe tap from Garrett Wilson.
13:09That's what you did in the backyard every single day as a kid right there.
13:13Well, you did.
13:14I was playing video games.
13:16Yeah.
13:16I clearly didn't catch him from the stands.
13:18I see him.
13:19That's right.
13:19I had to switch positions.
13:21Fair point.
13:23Fields.
13:24Oh, he gets out of it again.
13:28But a lot of time coming off the clock.
13:30And Fields will just chuck it away.
13:34Jalen Ramsey with a hit.
13:36And then a back and forth between the Jets and Steelers.
13:41Jets took exception to the fact that their quarterback got hit on the sideline.
13:44John Simpson of the Jets.
13:49Hayward's helmet is off.
13:52He's irate.
13:55So, Ian, as a coach, you're standing there.
13:57The play was over.
13:58Personal foul.
13:59Offense number 76.
14:0115-yard penalty.
14:02Down count.
14:03Third down.
14:04As a coach, you're standing there as Aaron Glenn.
14:07And he's mad about the penalty.
14:09But, at the same time, he is happy to see his offensive linemen sprint over and defend their quarterback.
14:16That's something that tells you what they think about him, what they think about the team,
14:21and how they're going to handle this season moving forward.
14:23When you're an enforcer like that, yes, you're definitely upset about the penalty.
14:27Yes, not that smart.
14:29Thankfully, in this situation, it really didn't hurt him that much.
14:32But what you like better is to see the team standing up for their guy.
14:38So, the back and forth afterwards, Simpson went over to let Ramsey know that he did not like the hit on the QB.
14:48They have not moved the ball.
14:50And now they will.
14:52Somebody figured it out.
14:54I thought I was missing something there.
14:56Hang on a second here.
14:58Yeah, I would say now the ball is probably going to be kneeled, and they'll take a two-point lead into the half.
15:03Well, then I think your analysis was spot-on earlier.
15:05Before the kick, yes, of course.
15:07Yeah.
15:07Nine seconds on the clock.
15:15The penalty is what ended the Jets' hopes of maybe taking a shot downfield or getting into field goal range.
15:23Now facing a third and 17 with nine seconds left.
15:27The halftime locker room speech has just got a little more fiery as well.
15:31You get that adrenaline going.
15:32You get a little fight.
15:33There's a hole.
15:34There's a hole.
15:37Isaiah Davis.
15:40And at the 41, Moore pushing and shoving at the end of the play.
15:45Here's what you can't do.
15:47You can't let it spill over play after play.
15:49You can't.
15:49Garrett Wilson and Jalen Ramsey were the two that got into it, and both teams came over to support their guy.
16:02There was a double-team push.
16:07Yeah.
16:11Just talking it out.
16:12They're just talking it out.
16:14And he's still talking, Ramsey.
16:16Yep, still.
16:17See, that's all they're doing.
16:18Talking it out.
16:19Yep.
16:19No penalty flags on that.
16:21Both teams heading to their respective locker rooms.
16:24Time has run out here at the end of the first half.
16:2619-17.
16:27The Jets leading the Steelers.
16:32Down to Evan Washburn.
16:34Well, Coach, as things got emotional down the stretch of that first half,
16:37what's the message in this locker room to not allow that to impact the second half and sustain this league?
16:42Guys, it's football.
16:43You know, emotions run high.
16:45I get it.
16:45The thing is we can't make stupid mistakes like that.
16:47We're trying to get ourselves to get in the field goal range.
16:49And our guys understand that.
16:50So I know that'll be correct.
16:52Coach, thank you.
16:52No doubt.
16:55All right, Evan.
16:55End of the first half with the Jets in front.
16:5819-17 over the Steelers.
17:01Halftime is next after these first half highlights from Verizon and a word from your local station.
17:05Welcome back to NFL Kickoff presented by YouTube TV.
17:11Scheduled today brings us to MetLife Stadium.
17:14The Steelers and the Jets.
17:15First half numbers.
17:16That's a whole lot of offense compared to what was anticipated prior to this matchup here in the broadcast booth.
17:24Ian Eagle, J.J. Watt, Evan Washburn down on the sidelines.
17:26What's your headline coming out of that first half?
17:29I would say the Steelers' inability to run the ball.
17:31You think that's always going to happen, but Harrison Phillips, Quinnen Williams inside for the Jets have done a great job.
17:35And it's kind of hampered the Steelers' ability to open up to play action.
17:39On the other side, the Jets have done a phenomenal job.
17:42And Mike Tomlin, the thing that he really talked about with us was he needed to see energy from his defense.
17:50In week one, you know that not everything is going to be super smooth, but you've got to see a certain level of energy defensively.
17:57And it was potentially lacking early to the point where there were some words exchanged along the sideline trying to get everybody into it.
18:07But it did pick up towards the end of the half, and then we saw a lot of it at the end of the second quarter.
18:12Caleb Johnson, the return man.
18:14And the Steelers have the football to start this second half.
18:17Speaking of, Mike Tomlin, moments ago, he spoke with our very own Evan Washburn.
18:24Coach, both offenses moving the ball well in that first half.
18:27What do you need to do defensively to try and get them off the field?
18:30We don't need to make the simple complex, man.
18:32Good defense, particularly early in the year, is about whooping blocks and making tackles.
18:36There's going to be some unforeseen schematics, and so those fundamentals have got to carry us.
18:40We're not whooping enough blocks and making enough tackles.
18:42It's got to improve.
18:43What are the coaching points for this first drive offensively?
18:46We've got an opportunity to book it in the half and change this climate.
18:49We've been playing uphill a little bit, and so we have an opportunity to change that.
18:52We've got to seize it.
18:53Coach, thank you.
18:54Jalen Warren gets the carry, keeps the legs churning, and picks up nine.
18:58First play from scrimmage in the second half.
19:01Yeah, we talked about the first half Steelers not being able to run the ball that well.
19:04The beauty of halftime in the first game of the season is you get to go in and make some adjustments,
19:09and clearly they saw something on that run play specifically, made an adjustment, and picked up a nice game.
19:15We'll see if they keep it rolling here in the second half.
19:18Warren had nine yards in the entire first half.
19:22He gained that on one play here in the third quarter.
19:25Give it to Warren again, and this time he's stopped at the line of scrimmage by Quinnen Williams.
19:33The name keeps pumping up.
19:36He is an all-pro formerly for a reason.
19:39Harrison Phillips, when he got here, said,
19:41I think Q is an underrated player, which you say, how could he be underrated as an all-pro?
19:45He said, that's how high I believe his ceiling is.
19:48He just stacks the block, sheds it, makes the tackle,
19:51and now the Steelers thought they might have an easy first down on second and one
19:55are sitting at third and two and have to pick it up.
19:58And once again, they go to Kenneth Gainwell in the backfield,
20:00who will shift out of there to the line of scrimmage.
20:03Shotgun formation for Rodgers.
20:11Play clock was down to double zero.
20:12And flags, you're down.
20:16Office number eight.
20:18Five-yard penalty.
20:19The third down.
20:21And that's an error.
20:22Aaron's looking at the officials saying,
20:24hey, I tried to get that timeout,
20:26and Bill Vinovich not having it,
20:28not getting the vet move of calling it as it hits zero.
20:35So now we got third, and it's called seven,
20:38and these Jets pass rushers,
20:40you got Jermaine Johnson, who's coming back off the Achilles injury.
20:43They're excited to see what he can do.
20:45Will McDonald already has a sack.
20:48And Quinnen showing what he can do so far.
20:51We asked Sauce Gardner,
20:52what do you do against Aaron Rodgers?
20:53You know him.
20:54He said, don't try to be a superhero against him.
20:55He'll try to get you to do things that he wants you to do.
20:58Rodgers hit as he throws.
21:01The pass bounces to his intended target.
21:04Jermaine Johnson.
21:06You just mentioned him.
21:07And the contact with Rodgers to disrupt the play.
21:11It's fourth down.
21:12A nasty spin move here.
21:13Right here on the right side,
21:15you got Jermaine Johnson.
21:16Spins inside, gets up at Aaron's face.
21:18He can't do anything about it.
21:21When Aaron got to the Jets,
21:23Jermaine Johnson said,
21:24I'm bummed I can't sack you now.
21:26And then when Aaron left,
21:27he was very excited that he might have the opportunity.
21:29Just missed it there.
21:30So from second and one to fourth and six,
21:33there's no rush once again for the Jets on this punt.
21:37Waitman gets all of it.
21:39And fair catch called for just across the 15-yard line.
21:45Gibson secures it.
21:47Jets up two with the ball early third.
21:50MetLife Stadium opened back in 2010.
21:56This is the 16th year as the home of the Jets
21:59and the New York Giants.
22:01Right now, the home team is in front.
22:0419-17 against the Steelers.
22:0729th all-time meeting.
22:08Steelers 21-7 against the Jets.
22:12Protection is held up throughout for New York.
22:15Armand Mimbu making his NFL debut.
22:19Older Fashionu now manning the left side.
22:22So they invested first-round picks
22:23back-to-back years at tackle.
22:29Take the handoff.
22:31Fields with a rush coming.
22:32It's deflected.
22:34Nearly intercepted.
22:36It was right there for the taking.
22:38Keanu Benton could not haul it in.
22:40Incomplete.
22:41Fields goes under center for the first play of the second half,
22:46which is something we didn't see him do a whole lot in the first half.
22:49They go with the play action after running the ball so well.
22:53Highsmith gets his hand up, knocks it down.
22:55Or Cam gets his hand up, knocks it down.
23:02And Keanu Benton, the Badger, almost.
23:05With a huge play.
23:07Second attempt for New York.
23:09Just a formation.
23:16Paul bounces to the outside and veers out of bounds.
23:21Contact there with Darius Slay.
23:25Let's take a look at Justin Fields in the first half here.
23:27He's been used in many different ways.
23:29The designed run with the zone read where he can get out on the edge.
23:32Here, he's going to escape up the middle.
23:34And you think he's a runner, but he does a great job keeping his eyes down the field and completing the pass.
23:39And then sometimes you just have to take the deep shot.
23:42And they had success with the shot to Garrett Wilson for the touchdown.
23:45You have to wonder, when are they going to go back to that play to see if the Steelers got that corrected?
23:50Got some injury updates.
23:53We'll check in with Evan.
23:55Justin Fields on a third and nine for New York.
23:59Wilson the motion man.
24:00Fields.
24:01LaFront.
24:02Wilson tried the catch and curl, but look at the Steelers.
24:06They get to the football in a hurry and bring down Wilson, led by Thornhill and Ramsey.
24:15We heard them talk about Jalen Ramsey and the way he practices, the intensity that he practices with.
24:21And you can see the swarm here by the entire defense.
24:26Off the field, give the offense the ball back.
24:29And J.J., it's the first punt of the day for the Jets and their rookie punter, Austin McNamara, out of Texas Tech.
24:44That one hangs.
24:46Austin gets out of the way.
24:48Ball bounces in the air.
24:49And the Jets did not allow the second bounce, and a flag comes down.
24:54And once again, now pushing and shoving on special teams.
24:57So we saw this at the end of the second quarter.
25:01It's now spilled over into the third at multiple flags.
25:06This is where it's tough, you know.
25:08You got all that emotion and energy from the scuffles at the end of the first half.
25:13Just can't let it spill over.
25:14Back to the play.
25:15Personal foul.
25:17Kicking.
25:18Correction.
25:19Receiving team number 83.
25:2115-yard penalty.
25:23First down.
25:23Timeout.
25:24Yeah, you're going to get that one all the time.
25:27It is Connor Hayward.
25:29Call for the penalty.
25:31So the Steelers, instead of having outstanding field position, they'll back it up a bit.
25:36Third quarter action continues here on CBS.
25:38The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Lowe's.
25:47Lowe's knows Sunday hits different when you've earned it.
25:51Burger King.
25:52At BK, have it your way.
25:55You rule.
25:56And by Allstate.
25:58You're in good hands.
26:00Jets holding on to a 19-17 lead over the Steelers.
26:11Pittsburgh would have had the ball at the 38-yard line.
26:14The 15-yard penalty sets them back to the 23.
26:1711-27 to go in this third quarter.
26:20I think back to that last drive the Steelers had.
26:22They started out with a nine-yard run.
26:24Get excited about it coming out of the half.
26:26You finally have some success.
26:28And then that stopped by Quinnen Williams.
26:30Just absolutely stalled the drive for him.
26:32Forced him to punt.
26:34So I'm very curious to see how this goes.
26:36But so far, Quinnen Williams, a former All-Pro, a star, stepping up to the plate here in the first game.
26:41Well, yeah, right now, Williams is watching from the sidelines.
26:46Steelers still in their huddle.
26:51The officials have been engaged with Mike Tomlin for an extended period of time.
26:56And now they're over on the Aaron Glenn sideline.
27:03Aaron Glenn and Mike Tomlin, same age.
27:05They're both 53.
27:06Glenn, his first year as a head coach in the NFL.
27:09Tomlin, his 19th year.
27:12As a head coach.
27:13Different paths to the same position.
27:17It was really interesting talking to them this week about delegating duties.
27:21As a former defensive coordinator turned head coach.
27:24And when you decide to stick your hand in and, you know, maybe call a blitz.
27:28And when you just let your guys go.
27:30And they each had slightly different philosophies on it.
27:34But very, very interesting to have those conversations.
27:36Aaron Glenn had a very successful 15-year playing career in the NFL.
27:40Mike Tomlin went into coaching just after getting out of William & Mary as a wide receiver.
27:47The throw.
27:48Rogers nearly intercepted.
27:51Michael Carter, the second, had a beat on it.
27:54The intended target, Calvin Austin.
27:56Check in with Evan Washburn.
27:59A couple updates on first half injuries, guys.
28:02Kanae Wongu is out for the Jets with a hamstring injury.
28:05And starting safety, Deshaun Elliott also out with a knee.
28:08And that's where Jalen Ramsey's positional versatility really helps.
28:12He can move from nickel to corner to safety.
28:14Also, some more Chuck Clark here in the second half of Pittsburgh.
28:18And Wongu, a core special teamer for the Jets.
28:23Second and ten.
28:25Now the sun is out here at East Rutherford.
28:30Working from the gun.
28:32Gainwell gets the call.
28:33Gainwell turns it upfield.
28:35And then gets smashed after the gain of five.
28:39Sherwood collaborating with Cisco.
28:42NFL Today update.
28:43Over to Adam Schein.
28:44Ian, what year is this?
28:46We have a Joe Flacco touchdown pass.
28:49Flacco to Sen Tillman.
28:51Five yards.
28:52Extra point.
28:53No good.
28:53Ian, back to you.
28:56Well, the year is 20-25.
28:58And Aaron Rogers just air-mailed one over the head of Jonu Smith.
29:02Setting up fourth and five.
29:04But they went quick.
29:06Defense.
29:07Five-yard penalty is also the first time.
29:10That's exactly why they went quick.
29:13Trying to catch him.
29:14Aaron Rogers, the savvy vet 21 years in, knew what he was doing.
29:18Saw him trying to sub.
29:21Caught the Jets with too many men on the field.
29:23Aaron Rogers is hyper-aware of everything going on at one time.
29:30And you just saw on top of the screen, 12th man trying to get off the field.
29:33Rogers got the snap.
29:35Got a free play out of it.
29:37Knew he was going to get the first down either way.
29:39So, the penalty moves the chains for Pittsburgh.
29:46Now operating at the Steelers, 34th.
29:50Fick the run.
29:51Rogers devoured.
29:54Will McDonald once again.
29:56A guy they feel could really continue to break out.
30:03Will McDonald just finds his way in the backfield once again.
30:06Up and under the inside of Roderick Jones.
30:09And Aaron has no choice but to lay down as he sees him coming in.
30:13Just a great pass rush for his second sack of the day out of Will McDonald.
30:17And the third New York sack of the afternoon.
30:21McDonald finished with ten and a half sacks last season.
30:24Quick snap.
30:25Rogers.
30:25Quick throw.
30:27He sandwiched it in between two defenders to Friar move.
30:31It's good for seven yards.
30:32Gardner in on the hit with Williams.
30:34Those negative plays just put you in such a tough situation.
30:41Now, even after a completion, you're sitting at third and 12.
30:45The pass rushers know they can kind of get after a little bit.
30:49So, they're pinning their ears back.
30:51Do you run a draw or a little screen to try and catch them as they rush up the field?
30:56Or do you throw something further down the field?
30:58Arthur Smith, offensive coordinator.
31:00His second year was the head coach in Atlanta for three years.
31:03Rogers, dump off, catch made, but not nearly enough for Gainwell.
31:09Five yards on the pass.
31:11And now, the punting unit comes on for Pittsburgh.
31:17Steve Wilkes in this Jets defense, obviously with an Aaron Glenn thumbprint on it.
31:23But Wilkes, who's been out of NFL football for a year after being the D coordinator for the 49ers in the Super Bowl,
31:31getting his feet wet again and doing a good job.
31:33And when you asked Aaron about it, he said, look, on game day, I'm here to assist and support.
31:38If I see something that's glaring, of course, I'm going to let it be known.
31:41But I'm also going to encourage my coordinators.
31:43Gibson gets to the sideline and takes a shot right at the end of the play.
31:49So, the Jets will have possession after the 50-yard punt, 19-yard return.
31:58Killebrew, the special team stop.
32:00You're watching NFL Kickoff, presented by YouTube TV.
32:04First Sunday of the season.
32:11Fans around the world are coming together for today's match-ups.
32:15These are fans in Manchester, United Kingdom.
32:18On hand, the Steelers and the Jets.
32:20The NFL's reach is truly global.
32:24Shout-out Burnley.
32:2540 minutes outside Manchester.
32:27Up to Clarets.
32:30You want to add to it?
32:31It's a Premier League squad.
32:33Okay.
32:33For those of you who don't know, very proud of our boys over there in Clarets.
32:37We'll have updates for you throughout the season.
32:41Hand-off to Braylon Allen.
32:43And he's spun down immediately by Alex Highsmith.
32:46Read it perfectly for no game.
32:49So, the numbers.
32:51Aaron Rodgers, 13 of 18, and his Steelers debut.
32:54171 yards, two touchdowns.
32:56Justin Fields and his Jets debut.
32:5810 of 13, 140 yards, and a touchdown field test.
33:0130 yards on the ground.
33:03Yeah, it hasn't been the passing game that's really been the issue
33:06or the separator here so far.
33:08It's been the rushing game.
33:09The Jets have been able to find a way to get it going on the ground.
33:12And the Steelers haven't quite so far.
33:14And better defense in this third quarter compared to the first half.
33:17Yep.
33:18Thanks for the answer.
33:19Yep.
33:20Good validation.
33:21That's all he was looking for.
33:25It's a hand-off to Hall.
33:28And Brees Hall works his way across the 35, picks up five.
33:33Hall got off to such a hot start.
33:35Back-to-back plays.
33:37On the first possession of the day, 11 carries, 55 yards for Hall,
33:42two catches, 38 yards.
33:44And he came into the season without a new contract.
33:46So after the season, he's an unrestricted free agent.
33:49He knows.
33:49He has a little bit of that chip on his shoulder.
33:52Always a competitor, of course, and dynamic, versatile.
33:57Looking forward to taking advantage of his opportunities this year.
34:01He is in year four with the Jets.
34:03Braylon Allen is in year two.
34:06And they're going to go empty here with Fields from the gun.
34:09On third down and five, Fields, connection made over the middle to Rucker.
34:16Rucker's been a bit of a forgotten man now in his fourth year at tight end.
34:21They drafted Mason Taylor, but Rucker, still a part of this, picks up 11 yards and a first down.
34:27Good job by Justin Fields, just scanning, seeing what the defense gives him.
34:32Rucker grabs a little separation across the middle.
34:35And right in the line of vision of Fields, delivers the ball.
34:37So four tight ends on this roster as well, just like the Steelers, but one inactive, Jelani Woods,
34:47who they picked up off of waivers from Indianapolis.
34:50It's Taylor, Rucker, and Smart.
34:52Active today, a tight end for New York.
34:55Hall back in there.
34:57Gets the call.
34:57Prince Hall.
34:59Strong cut.
35:01Another Jets first down.
35:0516 yards.
35:06It's Chuck Clark in for Deshaun Elliott with a stop.
35:10You're going to see a really nice cut here off Olu Fashenew's block.
35:15Brees just sticks his foot in the ground, gets north and south,
35:18and pierces into the heart of the defense.
35:22Big, big hole there for him to run through.
35:25He's looking for his first career 1,000-yard rushing season.
35:28In his rookie year, he averaged 5.8 yards per carry.
35:34First down now at the 36.
35:36And penalty flag.
35:39Again, that has not been an issue thus far for the Jets.
35:43You're averaging 5 yards a carry.
35:45You need the ball more.
35:46Full start.
35:47Office number 16.
35:485-yard penalty.
35:50Still first down.
35:50And it's the wide receiver, Tyler Johnson.
35:52So, back it up for New York to the 40-yard line of the Steelers.
36:00Just barely early.
36:01We talked about it a little bit in the first half last year.
36:04The undisciplinedness of the Jets.
36:06First in penalties.
36:08First in missed tackles.
36:09So, I believe that's only their second today from a pre-snap standpoint.
36:14Yes.
36:15They do have 128 rushing yards.
36:18Pittsburgh has 37 yards on the ground.
36:22And it's Hall.
36:23He's got a hole.
36:24He's got acceleration.
36:26First down.
36:27Jets.
36:29Inside the Pittsburgh 25.
36:31Darius Slay with the tackle.
36:33That's a 17-yard gain for Hall.
36:36And something we've been looking to see.
36:38You have Brees and Braylon in the backfield at the same time.
36:41They hand it to Brees.
36:43And he finds a huge lane for a massive first down.
36:47Again, no Vera Tucker out for the season.
36:50Tippman shifts over to right guard.
36:52Myers starting at center.
36:54Former starter with the Green Bay Packers.
36:56And it's working.
36:57This drive.
36:58They are finding success in that left B gap.
37:01Which is the gap between the left guard and the left tackle.
37:05This time it's Allen.
37:07And Allen runs into a wall.
37:10T.J. Watt ready for him.
37:13No gain on the play.
37:14They try the right side there after having success on the left and nothing doing.
37:21Interesting.
37:21Last year, teams that ran at T.J. Watt only gained 3.2 yards per carry.
37:26Which was number one in the NFL.
37:28And running away from him, they gained five yards a carry.
37:30Which was the eighth most in the NFL.
37:33Joe gets the rookie today.
37:34So we asked him about Armand Membu.
37:37And I asked him, hey, do you watch tape from college?
37:40He said, no.
37:41It doesn't translate.
37:43It's not going to help.
37:44So watched a bunch of the preseason.
37:46Membu did play in all three preseason games.
37:49Second and ten.
37:50Fields sensing the pressure.
37:52He's going to dart it.
37:53Catch made.
37:54Turning it upfield.
37:55Garrett Wilson.
37:57He's blocked out at the two-yard line.
38:01He tried to lunge his body.
38:03What a play.
38:05What a play.
38:05And I have to tell you what I've been most impressed with so far with Justin Fields is his movement in the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield.
38:12In the past, he might tuck that ball and run and see what he can get.
38:15Here he keeps his eyes downfield and finds his guy.
38:18Beautiful play.
38:19First and goal.
38:20Fields trying to do it himself.
38:22Extends for the score.
38:23Touchdown, Jets.
38:24A statement drive for New York here in the third quarter.
38:3312 for 15, 173, a tud, a rushing tud.
38:45Justin Fields put on a show.
38:47We asked Fields about Aaron Glenn.
38:53He said he laid out what kind of team he wants us to be.
38:56The DNA has to be discipline.
38:59Play smart.
39:00Play violent football.
39:01Dominate in the run game and the play-action passing game.
39:05We've seen that.
39:06The Jets now in front 25-17 with an extra point coming from Folk.
39:11When we asked Justin about going against his Pittsburgh D, he said,
39:18I know them better than they know what we're going to do.
39:23So he felt good about it just because they're the Steelers.
39:27They're going to do it the way that they do it.
39:29Mike Tomlin.
39:33Garrett Wilson nearly got in, but he got them close enough for Justin Fields.
39:39Extending the ball.
39:43Touchdown, New York.
39:47The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Chipotle.
39:52Real ingredients, real flavor.
39:55Chipotle for real.
39:57And by Progressive.
39:59Coverage you can count on.
40:00Progressive.com.
40:02Fireman Ed is here.
40:10The J-E-T-S chants have been working in this second half.
40:16Jets have a 26-17 lead over the Steelers.
40:21Folk kicks it off.
40:24Rookie return man Caleb Johnson from the floor.
40:27And Johnson is chopped down as he crosses the 30-yard line.
40:34Tonight, for the first time ever, the MTV VMAs are on CBS.
40:40L.A.
40:40L. Cool J hosts the iconic, most unpredictable music event right here on CBS.
40:46Live after the games.
40:49Starving like Marvin for the VMAs.
40:51All right, and this Jets crowd has come to life.
40:55I think earlier in the game I said it might have been 50-50.
40:57It seems a little more 70-30, 75-25, and they have come to life.
41:02They like what they see.
41:03Maybe they were a little cautious early on to see how this team was going to look,
41:07but right now they're proud of them, and they're giving them some support.
41:10Single setback is Jalen Warren.
41:12Pitch it.
41:17It's Caleb Johnson.
41:19And Johnson with a flag down.
41:23He tried to circle towards the sideline.
41:26The Jets got excellent pressure.
41:29Pedally marker on the play.
41:33First low foul.
41:34Yep, that is.
41:35Defense number 56.
41:36Late hit out of bounds.
41:3715-yard penalty.
41:39Automatic first down.
41:39So Aaron Glenn, who preaches aggressiveness and violence,
41:43the problem is not when the running back is along the white of the sideline.
41:49Illegal.
41:51Last year, we talked about earlier, undisciplined football,
41:54the most penalties, most penalty yards, most drops, most missed tackles.
41:58Those are the things Aaron Glenn wants to clean up.
42:01They asked him this week, what will you consider a successful season?
42:05He said, if our fans watch our team and they're proud, that's success for me
42:09because I know that means the wins are following.
42:12That would have been a loss of two on the play.
42:15Instead, the Steelers are now at the 45-yard line.
42:19Johnson remains in there.
42:20Rodgers are going to throw it.
42:21It bounces off the intended receiver.
42:24D.K. Metcalf matched up with Sauce Gardner.
42:27One thing that stood out in our chat with Sauce Gardner, he mentioned meetings this year,
42:34the corners and the safeties meet together in the same room.
42:37That's never happened for Sauce before in a Jets uniform.
42:40Yeah, and he talked about how that's helped their chemistry,
42:42and they're seeing the game through the same set of eyes.
42:45And he talked about Aaron Glenn being a defensive back in the league
42:48and his ability to coach him hard because he knows exactly what he's seeing
42:52because he's been there before.
42:54319 to go on the third.
42:56It's a second down and 10 for the Steelers.
43:01Rodgers in the pocket, off his back foot.
43:04He hits Jalen Warren, and Warren's got room to the sideline.
43:07First down.
43:08Stevens slipped a little bit there, trying to come out of the break,
43:12which allowed for a little bit more run after the catch.
43:14You're going to see 21 Stevens after Warren catches this ball.
43:17He's going to slip right there,
43:19which just allows Warren that extra little gap to pick up the first down.
43:25First catch of the day for Warren.
43:27It covers 17 yards.
43:30And now the Steelers have worked it into Jets territory at the 38.
43:37Under three minutes to go on the third.
43:40Warren remains in there.
43:42Quick snap.
43:44The hole opened and it closed,
43:46and Warren sideways his way through for a gain of three.
43:54Sideways is it.
43:55That's a good way to put it.
43:57That's exactly what he did.
43:58He was kind of sidestepping almost a half spin, per se.
44:03Enough to move the ball in the right direction from Pittsburgh.
44:08Now a second and seven.
44:11Rodgers fires it.
44:14It's complete.
44:15DK Metcalf makes his move.
44:18And out of bounds.
44:20Tony Adams out there on an island with Metcalf.
44:23That's 18 yards through the air.
44:25When you have a receiver like DK coming across the field like that from all the way on the other side,
