00:01Previously on Project Runway.
00:03Your challenge is to create this year's signature dress for the Campbell's Address Your Heart program.
00:08Each of these amazing women has been impacted by heart disease.
00:12So you're going to make me pretty because I survived, right?
00:15These women are not 34, 25, 35.
00:18This is honestly the largest challenge I've ever faced as a designer.
00:24Amy, you are the winner of this challenge.
00:32I'm sorry, Jesus.
00:34That means you're out.
00:36I cried.
00:38Janine, you choose which model we'll be in.
00:41I choose Casey.
00:43Sorry, Sarah.
00:45It's okay.
00:46This is Project Runway.
00:48Yes!
00:49I am fashion.
00:50Look at me.
00:51It's cut or be cut.
00:52Just make it work.
00:53Great clothes.
00:54Great style.
00:55I've got it all.
00:56Three finalists will make it to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
01:00They won't do anything to win.
01:01I will.
01:02But only one can be the winner.
01:05My weapon of choice.
01:06For these 16 designers, Project Runway is the chance of a lifetime.
01:11The winner of Project Runway will receive a fashion spread in Marie Claire Magazine.
01:15An opportunity to sell their line on bluefly.com.
01:18The $50,000 technology suite to create, design and run their business from HP and Intel.
01:24And $100,000 from L'Oreal Paris to launch their line.
01:27Get up, Jay.
01:28It's time for Bible study.
01:29You won't read the word.
01:30I use it as a weapon.
01:34It felt really wonderful to not be in the bottom three.
01:37But one thing I figured out about the bottom three is that when you're in the bottom, the
01:42only place that you can go is up.
01:51it felt really wonderful to not be in the bottom three but one thing i figured out about the bottom
01:56three is that when you're in the bottom the only place that you can go is up did you want tea or
02:01did you drink coffee well being in the bottom three sucks but i know that really amazing things
02:07are going to come because i might be sweet but i'm fierce one thing that's a little disturbing
02:13to me and disheartening is that after coming in second nobody was really very happy for me
02:20nobody said congratulations top two top two i don't know what that's about maybe it's about
02:27jealousy maybe it's about they don't feel like i should have been in the top i'm not really sure
02:33but it was kind of a big bummer come out jess i'm coming let's go see what this challenge is about
02:39oh i didn't even check my hair oops
02:50hello hello it's time for your next challenge amy you won the last challenge which gives you
03:02immunity and you cannot be eliminated for this challenge congratulations for your next challenge
03:09you will be designing a look that better be picture perfect tim is going to take you to a
03:16spectacular location where he will introduce you to a special guest and fill you in on all of the
03:23details good luck and i'll see you on the runway bye bye when heidi announced what the challenge was in my
03:32head i'm thinking we're going to a photographer studio we're going to look at old photograph and try to
03:37recreate a look excited yes look at this place so we arrive at the hearst building and it's just open
03:52and bright and beautiful the whole thing is just an amazing look so i'm super excited just to see what
03:58it is we're going to do here designers it is a sincere honor for me to introduce you to joanna coles
04:03editor-in-chief of mary claire magazine wow thank you for letting us come oh my pleasure and welcome
04:12to the hearth building this is where our office is designers before joanna continues i want you to know
04:18that this challenge is one of the biggest in the history of project runway and the reward for the winner
04:25of the challenge is unprecedented so the challenge is to design an outfit to be worn by a celebrity
04:34to appear on the cover of mary claire wow the opportunity to be on the cover of mary claire
04:45it's once in a lifetime it's something that i feel like has so much potential for boosting your career
04:52so ultimately if i win this i'm just going to be in heaven the winning look will appear on the april
04:57cover of mary claire in the last year the designers who have been featured on the cover have included
05:02versace dolce and gabbana calvin klein gucci just to name a few you'll be in that company
05:11now there are some key rules when you're designing for a cover it's not just about the outfit you have
05:17to think about the crop we usually go from sort of thigh or waist upwards so if you're putting detail
05:23in there it probably needs to be in the top part you need to bear in mind that we want to put cover
05:28lines on the outfit so think about color we would never do black and i think patterns can be tricky
05:33because you want to get words on there it's going to be an april cover so what will the season be like
05:39what will they be wearing the reader normally takes about three seconds to decide which magazine to
05:44pick off the newsstand so it needs to be eye-catching strong confident sexy and can i tell them who the
05:50celebrity is i'd love you to the celebrity is none other than heidi klune that's huge like wow so not
06:03only do we get a cover of one of the best fashion magazines we get one of the best supermodels in the
06:10entire world to wear the look it's amazing good luck guys thank you all right designers you have 30
06:29minutes to sketch i'm pleased to see that you've already started and how exciting is this one of
06:33you will have your design on heidi klum on the cover of mary claire magazine you have one day for this
06:41challenge i'll be back in 30 minutes thank you thank you my god if my dress can be on the cover of
06:51mary claire magazine i want it to say mila designing for heidi klum is a dream come true and completely
06:58intimidating i mean when the garment comes down the runway she's right there
07:01i choose an icy color palette sort of silver and light blue and charcoal gray because i think
07:09that those are colors that could really stand out on her
07:16i want to design a dress that is form-fitted short but not slutty i'm really going to focus on color
07:24that's going to be a huge statement as far as you know catching somebody's eye you know just from
07:27like walking by a new stand and i really want someone to to see just a glimpse of it and want to see more
07:37all right designers we're going to mood so bring whatever you need with you
07:43and we will have a good shopping experience all right
07:46designers i have your 150 dollar budget and you will have 30 minutes to shop everyone your time
07:58will begin right now and they're off how much is this stuff here i'm picking blues and turquoise and
08:10greens you know i'm not quite sure about the mix of colors but i'm just grabbing can i get uh two yards
08:16of this please grabbing half a yard of this grabbing yeah that'll be enough thank you designers you have
08:22one minute remaining all right everybody one minute to get in line
08:33thank you mood
08:43all right designers you have until midnight tonight
08:46and you know the morning drill there will be very little time all right thank you make it work i'll
08:51see you later
08:59time is absolutely becoming more and more of a factor as we move on it just feels even crazier because
09:05the stakes are high i mean you get to have your design on the cover of magazine and here you go you
09:09have one day to put it all together so the winner gets the cover of marie claire magazine which is
09:20so huge so everybody's just completely in the zone it's it's pretty quiet around the room right now
09:29the mood in the work room is quiet it is busy and that's the reality that everybody's trying to make
09:35you work i'm gonna go to sleep if it remains this quiet in here
09:44seth aaron he's very immature and he just doesn't stop like no matter how many times you have to tell
09:49him like just shut up
09:55i wish you would stop i shake one hell of a martini lots of 80s rock i like lots of 80s pop rock
10:10some people just don't know how to just work chill and just let your garment do your talking
10:16seth aaron just needs to bring it down a notch let's get your back let's get your back did you smoke
10:22anything besides a cigarette when you went outside no take your word for it
10:30the biggest problem that i'm having is the magenta is looking fuchsia so i started just
10:35playing around with the black metallic nylon that i have and the fuchsia linen and it's actually looking
10:42better than the sketch that's really striking thank you oh we got a new iron new iron so you're
10:48already in fabric wow well that's not amazing trust me i have a ways to google i have taken a lot of the
10:55things that the judges are telling me at this point but i can't afford to beat myself up no matter what
11:01i'm going to design something that speaks volumes about anthony anthony is using a really bright turquoise
11:09and funny enough anna's using a very similarly bright turquoise yikes i've never made three pieces
11:17before i've only ever made one so what possessed me to try to make three pieces in nine hours i'm not
11:23quite sure the pressure is really on stay threaded i'm looking at my colors i'm looking at my shell pinks and
11:33my my cream colors and it's starting to look very bridal and i don't do bridal like i'm going along and
11:40i'm thinking i should be doing the opposite of what i'm doing you know like this sort of intuitive
11:46damn it janine like don't blow this
12:03are you making a dress no i'm making a space suit this challenge means more to me than anything to
12:13this point in my career i mean competing for a major national cover is unprecedented so it's very
12:20important to me that i create something that i can really see winning with every challenge i get better
12:27and better about dealing with time constraints but this particular challenge is kind of frustrating
12:33because the reward is huge and i want my construction to be immaculate i don't like that scene at all
12:40i'm trying not to sort of emote the dread that is boiling up in my stomach i should have a point of
12:47view and i just feel like i don't i'm probably going to screw myself anna how's the three pieces going oh my
12:55god that's okay i just really need a fitting you know so here i am working on the shorts and i
13:00think to myself these need to be really beautifully made because i've had craftsmanship issues in the
13:05past and i really want to have that not be part of my future i'm doing a jacket a pop her pants into
13:12this and you're like so talented everybody can sew dude in here my biggest competition at this point is
13:19probably half the people in that room i feel like emilio is definitely really strong and he's got a lot
13:23of experience i feel the same way about mila even though i don't really love her aesthetic i feel
13:27like the judges do i haven't really seen any great competition for me in this challenge so far
13:33you know jay and maya have some interesting things going on and yeah i mean that's that's about all i can
13:38tell so far how is everybody working really you don't sound so good you sound worn out i'm just here to
13:53check in with you all and i'm going to start with anthony oh see that's what i mean about the response
14:00hi tam how are you i know i don't sound like my usual chipper self you know this is an intense
14:07challenge furthermore heidi's going to wear this look right i wanted to do a short dress but i didn't
14:13want it to be formal all right can you just give me an idea of what it's going to look like well that's
14:17the thing tim i don't completely know what it's going to look like i just start cutting the strips
14:23out that worries me i don't want you just to gimmick it up i don't want you to do this for the sake of
14:29doing it use that editing eye if you can take something off and not hurt the integrity of the
14:34look don't do it okay okay carry on i will
14:38let's go
14:40mila hi tim i'm eager to see what you're doing i'm doing a dress out of stretch wools peach beige cream
14:47like gray dark gray and you know it's basically a low v in the front it's going to come around
14:54to like a sort of a another echoing the mitering a little v in the back all right so it's your signature
15:00certainly yeah work work thanks mila thank you
15:04how's janine doing hi tim so i picked a lot of like blues and um oceany colors and how are you
15:13using these well i want to layer them so it looks like sort of just waves or something and then but
15:20this spewing out factor is that really you well you know it's the fifth challenge and i haven't met
15:27the judges yet that could be a blessing no no i understand that but like i am getting further ahead
15:33but it's like i'm not that great but i'm not that bad all right because i know i mean you don't want
15:37it to look like clown clothes i know when to okay come back a little bit thank you okay wonderful
15:46well i certainly see color yes yes i'm definitely working with color the concept is kind of like
15:52madame butterfly on acid so it's one piece it will be one piece yeah and then the belt will just separate
15:58it which i'm doing in the metallic leather i just fear that it could potentially cheapen it okay and
16:05make it into a joke so with that in mind as you're working with it just keep asking yourself the same
16:11question i will because i'm really with you on everything else carry on ben thank you thank you
16:18anna hi tim so talk to me what are you doing i kind of like the juxtaposition of sort of
16:23more of a cooler um fabric with uh more of a feminine but do you feel this is you yeah i do
16:30i do so there's going to be this pair of shorts also that completes the bottom half and how short are
16:37the shorts um you know they're going to be pretty short all right don't lose your editing eye on this
16:43okay thank you tim all right anna thank you emilio hi tim color yes i'm creating a short little
16:51cocktail dress okay and then i got this ombre lacing i mean as nice as this ombre is i don't think
16:57anyone's going to notice this it's going to be that they're different colors well what i'm going to
17:01do is i'm going to do it lace it and then leave them the length of the dress you're emphasizing the
17:06neckline using this corseting lacing yes yes yes don't get in a position where you can't do this
17:15because that is the wow that is the wow factor exactly thank you thank you all right designers i'm
17:21leaving it for the night and i will say that i'm leaving it for the night reluctantly make it work
17:26everybody see you tomorrow all right let me throw some stitches in this and then just see where we're
17:35at so alexis arrives for the model fitting and i've got basically the front piece of the dress
17:41finished so at least i'm in a good place i can hold it up and see how the basket weave kind of works
17:45around her curves basically when you're looking at the back it's this long oh that's cool the color
17:51that i'm using is really muted i don't know i just wanted to do something really feminine and sexy
17:59heidi embodies that kind of persona carrie comes in and i'm a little horrified by how off i was on
18:05the shorts the shorts are not a good fit and i also begin to freak out because i can see that there's
18:11not a whole lot of time left i see that anna might need to really pay attention to her hem and the fit
18:18of her garment and she has very limited experience so we'll see what she turns out thank you hot though
18:25oh good nobody dared go near my machine mila there's something about her that's you know kind
18:38of fake and not so sincere time for some major assembly here nothing bothers me about mila the
18:46person what bothers me about mila the designer is that she really comes off as very cocky when all
18:51she's doing is color blocking in every challenge she's a one-note wonder this is the back because
19:00they sure do look the same to me at this point i just feel like there's so little time in this
19:06challenge and i need to be really focused i mean i'm here to win let me think let me think let me think
19:14right now i'm concerned about my look because i wanted to do something special however i'm not
19:20exactly sure how to work through my dress so i wish they would give us more time in this challenge but
19:26life isn't fair so why the hell should project runway be oh my god it's 11 50. how did that happen
19:37so at the end of the day i'm in shock i need to finish my skirt i need to do the hum it is serious freak
19:42out as the night ends i know i made a huge mistake because it already looks too short on the dress form
19:49unfortunately i don't have the time to recut this entire dress so i'm just gonna have to see what
19:54the judges say it's midnight and i'm really worried about how things are going i just really am trying
20:00to work as fast as possible to get everything done on time okay i'm done wait for me bitches
20:18oh yeah yeah there's gonna be a bloodbath on the runway today yeah this is gonna be a carnival
20:26vila top three we're gonna be in the top three again yeah
20:31unashiva are you not gonna get up the prize in this particular challenge is truly a platform for
20:39greatness so it is very important to me anna i have a feeling that our time is running out
20:46i have a hunch that anna and i completely missed the mark on this one and it might come down between
20:52the two of us i have a lot of work to do so do i you forgot your perk no i got it
21:05i have quite a lot of finishing to do on the shorts i'm like in a mode of hysteria
21:21i'm feeling like i'm pretty much on target i think heidi's going to look amazing in my dress
21:35i'm nowhere near being done i mean i have been nowhere near being done before but this is like
21:41this is serious
21:44designers
21:45this is the biggest challenge in the history of project runway so i want you all focusing on
21:54these garments and making them absolute perfection okay you have an hour each to send your model to
22:01the garnier hair salon and the l'oreal paris makeup room i assume you're all using the bluefly.com wall
22:07yes good thank you i'm sending in your models
22:16all right cool
22:22oh you'll be fine once i put the zipper on
22:25to be able to have heidi wear my dress for the cover of marie claire magazine that's it's amazing
22:33everyone wants this so badly everyone
22:39nice smoky gray eye i don't want anything dark or costum and all the adjectives they used to describe
22:47that once it gets past the earlobes that's when the volume starts make it edgy
22:59designers you and your models and i are going down to the runway in 10 minutes thank you
23:08the dress did pretty much come out the way i envisioned had i had more time i probably would
23:13have added more volume to the neckline but i'm feeling so confident i think that the couple of
23:19designers who will have trouble a lot of their colors are not colors that are going to resonate
23:24people have these really muted tans and topes it's just going to wash out okay good good good
23:36if i could go back and do this whole thing over again i would have gone in a completely different
23:42direction pedals bro oh come on i just want to get out of this alive yes i'm very happy about
23:53my dress a part of me thinks lord what if they don't like this dress but at this point i got to be
23:58consistent with myself i made a decision that i was going to make something i love and i have got to
24:03remain faithful to that thought process you did a really great job it came out really nice thank you
24:08having lorraine addressed and having her in hair and makeup and everything the whole look ties
24:13together i'm wondering you know maybe this is the one this could be my moment yeah i'm happy
24:19designers and models this is it we're going down to the runway right now
24:24we're going down to the runway right now thank you
24:33thank you
24:44welcome to the runway as you know in fashion one day you're in and the next day you're out
24:50you're challenge was to design an outfit for the cover of mary claire magazine the winning
24:57designers look will be on the april cover and they will be worn by yours truly okay let's meet the
25:04judges first we have top american designer michael kors hey guys fashion director for mary claire magazine
25:12nina garcia hello everyone and editor-in-chief for mary claire magazine joanna coles hi we will score
25:21your designs as they come down the runway one of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out
25:28let's start to show
25:31i am happy with my garment i think that holly looks great i think that it does feel like a spring look
25:38and i'm actually happy that i'm the only one that used a print which i completely think is appropriate
25:44on a cover if they put my suit on the front of marie claire with heidi plume wearing it i'll guarantee
25:52you they sell more copies i'm 300 happy i think i definitely fulfilled this challenge to the fullest
26:04it's really a dress that's going to catch somebody's eye on a cover ultimately everything kind of
26:09dissipates and just a big smile and relief and happiness and i feel like i just showed exactly what
26:14i am as i watch carrie walk down the runway i really feel like the look is a reflection of who i am as a
26:23designer heidi was cool and contemporary that version of her i can see being interested in this look
26:34when she turns that corner i'm like yes ma'am get into it i found a balance between creating the
26:44volume as well as showing off a beautiful silhouette i don't know if it's the best dress
26:52up there but i think i did my job beautifully had some issues with bulk but i think i fulfilled
26:59the vision that i'd had going into this i feel really great about my dress i think it looks great
27:07on brandeis i'm just a little concerned about the color because i thought i was selecting a peach and
27:13on the runway it appears to be more of a beige the color is amazing the detail it's spectacular
27:25my dress was put together and heidi will look hot in my dress if i were to win this prize it really
27:34would be huge i'm so proud of myself that i came up with you know something so graceful and flowy and
27:45romantic and sexy there's something so dramatic about that dress that i love
27:52this design moves it looks like butter it just you can just look at it and see the comfort of this
28:01garment it's so well crafted every seam and edge is lying flat and i think that the romper would be a
28:08knockout on a cover megan looks so good in the dress she looks stunning and the color ends up being so nice
28:18on her i'm really pleased and i think it would look great on a magazine cover
28:30i couldn't have asked for the color to look any more saturated and vibrant and i think the thing
28:35that excites me the most is that it really is a fresh new take it's something different and it
28:40ended up being a cover look so just keep my fingers crossed
28:49if i call your name please step forward seth aaron
28:55jay
28:58maya please step forward jesse
29:03jonathan
29:06amy
29:10if i have called your name congratulations your scores have qualified you to move on to the next
29:16challenge you can leave the runway
29:25the six of you have the highest and the lowest scores
29:30one of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out let's bring out your models
29:40so
29:44ben tell us about your look and why do you think it will work for a cover the idea is kind of like a
29:49modern interpretation of madame butterfly and technicolor so uh i wanted to really use vibrant
29:55colors and a lot of textures it kind of acts as a kimono but it still functions as a dress
30:01a news stand is is a very noisy place and i think this cuts through the noise it's a good choice
30:10it feels very modern i like the combination of the colors and it's as beautiful from the front as it is
30:16from the back i think you did a beautiful back on this dress you know with the little peekaboo and then
30:22you edge it out with the yellow it definitely has an impact i think it's going to be worn by someone
30:27who's very confident it's a real contender thank you so much anna tell us about your look well i
30:35started sort of with a color palette that i thought would complement your natural coloring and immediately
30:40thought of blue i also wanted to reference that reader of marie claire that is sort of contemporary
30:46and hip and a little bit feminine but not completely whimsical in a sense it's going to be on heidi who
30:52has an incredible figure and this gives her no shape or silhouette whatsoever it's like three
31:00ingredients in a dish that leave you feeling slightly nauseous it just doesn't work together
31:06this is not a teen magazine i think you totally missed what is this magazine about who is their reader
31:14and who am i putting this on speaking about the pieces themselves i think that they're made well
31:21but i don't think you push the envelope enough anthony tell us about your look i was truly inspired by
31:29you i thought about every time that you have grazed this carpet and what you're wearing i wanted clean
31:34lines and i wanted a very feminine silhouette because i did play in my mind she's no longer going to be
31:39pregnant so i'm sure you wanted to celebrate your figure the costume drama is over you've entered modern
31:47times this dress is modern looking that length is great for her and you did one shoulder in a new way
31:57i do like this dress very much for heidi um jesus and you are one of the few designers that embraces color
32:06the color is fantastic if that's where next spring is going to be then just beam me there the way you
32:12place this it's actually very slimming so her body looks beautiful thank you okay janine tell us about
32:20your look i was really inspired by the ocean and the colors of the sea and i created this structured
32:28dress with these seashell inspired seam lines with a small sort of frothy little bolero
32:34she's got like the seaweed organza she's got 9 000 seams all of that going on and then i'm going to
32:41lay whatever their cover lines are on top of it i'm going to pass it by it's not to me fashion forward
32:48it's not like what women in america will look at maryn claire like wow she looks hot you know i want to
32:53be that woman i'm not getting the beach and the sea reference unless it's a sort of polluted sea with
33:00plastic bottles in it it's fierce too romantic too bridal it's just too sweet all around when i
33:08see heidi i don't necessarily see her as sweet no mila tell us about your look i wanted something
33:18strong feminine but still soft and i just thought this would be really slimming at the waist rather than
33:25a strong color i decided to take a chance and go for something fresh and light let's be honest that
33:31peach comes off like ace bandage and then once you crop her she's literally in some kind of weird jog bra
33:38with the v-neck and these arrows look like they're pointing at her crotch i mean this would not work
33:45at all that color doesn't feel confident it feels like it's trying to disappear it looked much peachier
33:53when it was in my hands emilio tell us about your look well i wanted a very sexy strong color and very
34:02interesting detail from the waist up so i chose the silk jersey and teamed it with the ombre lacing
34:09it's not the easiest thing in the world to make jersey structured and i have to say that you managed
34:15to take fabric that doesn't want to do that and you made it work you could get a very strong cover with
34:21it this dress beckon people to grab the magazine i do love the color i think the detail is beautiful but
34:30with those little ribbons going on it just feels very junior to me these here just these things
34:36right here here here it goes cut the whole strap off i'm just curious the whole damn strap just watch
34:43it's more sophisticated by a long shot open the ponytail looks like a baby yeah let's get rid of
34:51you know we've never done this before seriously yeah it's great thank you very much okay we've heard
34:59what you had to say we're going to have a little chat and then i call you back you can leave the
35:03runway thank you okay let's start with the designers that weren't as strong janine it's so weird that
35:17she would design this dress for you it's not my style at all you said strength that's the opposite
35:24whimsical and mermaidy but not a cover dress
35:28okay let's move on to anna that was dreadful there's nothing special about this i'm not sure
35:35what her point of view is granted she made separates she managed to make those shorts they
35:40were well made they were well made okay let's move on to mila the main color of the dress was the color
35:47of hospital food i would probably have to put on a lot of self tanner get really tan in order to fight
35:54this color color you would recede right back in this dress and i think people would walk on by
36:01let's move on to the ones that we did like let's start with emilio there were a lot of things there
36:06that were good but it had to be sort of redesigned once you got rid of those silly ties that were on
36:12her shoulder i think cleavage color a nice line all of those things i think are great for you i
36:20liked the fact he had his scissors in his pocket and he was quite happy to chop them off honestly when
36:24you're doing a cover you need a designer to be able to do that okay let's move on to ben i think ben
36:31did a very modern very chic dress i think this would be very eye-catching on the newsstand definitely
36:38it's fantastic that ben showed this kind of confidence right
36:46okay let's move on to anthony he thought about your coloring your figure it's got a lot of charm
36:51about it this dress makes me feel glad springs here even if you were really cropped on that
36:57the strap itself is interesting enough that it has dimension and texture
37:03okay so we've made our decision good let's bring them back out
37:17one of you will have your design on the cover of mary clara magazine
37:22and one of you will be out
