01:45Gino, the Heisman Trophy winner, joins us on Thursdays.
01:48He's in Chicago right now.
01:50He's going to be in Ames, Iowa on Saturday on the call for Touchdown Radio.
01:56Iowa, Iowa State.
01:59How's Chicago?
02:00The greatest city in the country.
02:02You know what the shocking thing is?
02:0555 degrees this morning in Chicago.
02:09Wow.
02:09Wow.
02:1055.
02:11It is.
02:11It might be 68 now, but, yeah, I had to put a sport coat on just to stay warm.
02:18So, it is glorious.
02:22No, I had some gabagool earlier, though.
02:24I had the Italian.
02:25A little Italy.
02:26Oh, yeah.
02:27Oh, yeah.
02:28I'm a Paulana's meat market.
02:30Went to our boy Fish's spot.
02:32They gave me the Italian.
02:34Oh, that's good stuff, man.
02:36So, did the Hurricanes, you were there, you were doing the game for Touchdown Radio.
02:39Did the Hurricanes put everyone on notice Sunday night that, hey, Carson Beck is legit,
02:46this line is legit, both sides of the line, and they've got weapons at receiver, and this
02:53team is a legit contender?
02:56Well, I think there were some questions answered.
03:00I don't think there was a question of offensive line or defensive line.
03:03I think that, you know, we talked about it last week.
03:05That was the strength of the team.
03:07The question was going to be top six pass catchers were gone.
03:11Who's going to be the top pass catcher this year?
03:14We saw a 17-year-old kid who is just an absolute bud and star and waiting, and he ain't waiting,
03:21I mean, to come out and have that game then.
03:24And I think our secondary, you know, answered the bell.
03:28I mean, there was a lot of questions after last year, you know, where our defense didn't
03:34play that well.
03:34Well, but defense played well, and I'm fairly certain this analyst told you heat and humidity
03:42were going to be a factor in that game.
03:45And in the third quarter, I mean, when you're busting out popsicles on the sidelines, heat
03:50and humidity, you could not prepare for how hot it was in that game.
03:54DBJ did tell us that, you're correct.
03:56I will say this, Hawk, props, props to the Miami fans.
04:06We always get, you know, bad press, but there was only some blue smattering up in the upper
04:13decks.
04:13I thought I was just going back to the Orange Bowl when they played Penn State and the Notre
04:18Dame fan just descended on hard rock.
04:21Man, the Miami fan held true.
04:24I think there was a lot of tickets, maybe for sale online, but they priced them so high.
04:29They priced everybody out of the market and they still came to the game.
04:32It was, it was awesome to see.
04:34Best environment.
04:35They had a home field advantage.
04:36When, when, when, when, when Miami fans show up that stadium, cause people, Oh, it's antiseptic.
04:46It's not like, uh, the orange bowl.
04:48When fans are there, that is a loud crowd.
04:51Like one of, one of the students, I thought one of the signs, I got a chuckle, but I thought
04:56it was kind of mean.
04:57It was like, we're going to burn you Notre Dame.
05:00And it had pictures of the Notre Dame cathedral over here.
05:04But I'm like, Oh, that's, that's, that's not right.
05:07I also, I saw one of the students below you, Gino, uh, must've paid $5 for a old number
05:1513, you know, Toretta.
05:17You see that?
05:18I see.
05:18It was like, I didn't know what to post.
05:20I was like, props to the guy wearing my Jersey down there.
05:23I should have put like, where's Waldo.
05:25Gino, is it, is it too early from what you saw yesterday?
05:32And I know, look, there's a lot of football left to play, right?
05:34Because I mean, Bethune is Bethune.
05:36Definitely wasn't yesterday, by the way.
05:38I'm sorry.
05:39Sunday.
05:40I understand that maybe on Monday or Tuesday, but we're all the way to Thursday.
05:45We've got, um, we've got USF and then the two big ones, UF and Florida state.
05:52But from what you saw in that game, is it fair to say this is the best roster Mario Cristobal
05:57has had in Miami since he got here?
06:01Oh yeah.
06:02No, I don't think there's any question about that.
06:04I mean, you know, is, is Carson Beck going to be as good as Cam Ward?
06:09I mean, those are obviously huge shoes to fill just on one position basis.
06:14But based on that performance, it looks like, you know, the O-line has been the strength,
06:20the D-line, Mesidor, and Bane were just absolute beasts.
06:25And then the new DC was aggressive at times and he got to them.
06:31And, and I think, you know, one of the other things I, I thought in the game, you know,
06:36we talked about the environment and the noise, um, the end of the game, they needed to run
06:41a two minute drill and you saw a red shirt freshman quarterback making his first start
06:46on the road and they, he couldn't get plays off.
06:50I mean, it was, it, that that's home field advantage, but that's also repetition.
06:55And he doesn't have a lot of now.
06:57I would have been, had the same concern for, with Carson Beck, because he's only practiced
07:02in the last month because of his elbow injury.
07:04He, he's not really taking a lot of two minute drill reps.
07:07So I was, I was happy that it was on their side.
07:10They were the ones that had to come back at the, at the end to, to tie or win the game.
07:15Um, but I, I would, yeah, there's no question.
07:18This roster is, is the best that, that Mario's had.
07:21I mean, that's, that's what you would expect right after, you know, three, four years of,
07:26of recruiting.
07:27Uh, my fear is they've got Bethune, Cookman this Saturday, then they've got you, or if
07:33you listen to McAfee, he said Boston college, but you know, you know, BC, BC, the Bethune
07:39logo looks similar to BC, BC, which not anywhere close, but anyway, go ahead.
07:46They've got Bethune, Cookman.
07:48Then they've got Florida.
07:50Yep.
07:51I'm sorry.
07:51Then they've got USF, USF, and they've got Florida.
07:54Then they've got FSU and I am nervous that that USF game is a trap game because they're
08:01going to get past Bethune and they're going to be focused on Florida and Florida state.
08:07And that USF game could end up being textbook trap game.
08:12I would say no.
08:14Cause USF beat the brakes off of Boise state who was a ranked team.
08:19So they were, and I think that there'll be enough game film.
08:25Where you got, you got to put some respect on USF.
08:28I mean, they, they came out and played well.
08:30I mean, and, and, and so, you know, the, plus they got a couple of our alumni, Kevin Patrick,
08:37one of my old teammates, our D line coach, Van Dyke is their secondary coach.
08:41I mean, you know, you, you add in that little extra incentive of coaching against your alma mater
08:47that now I don't think there's an opportunity for a trap game there.
08:52I think there's an opportunity that we got to keep all our guys healthy for that stretch
08:56because, you know, Florida's got a bunch of talent.
09:00USF has shown that they have some talent.
09:03USF just, or FSU just manhandled Alabama at the line of scrimmage last week.
09:10So, you know, but maybe this is back to the good old days where the, the big three are
09:14rolling and the best one wins the national championship, man.
09:18Would that be fun?
09:19Are you any concerns over?
09:20That would be awesome.
09:22Oh, you had a bad game.
09:23You know, I, I think.
09:25Don't put too much weight on one game.
09:26I don't, I mean, I, I look at it like this.
09:30I think that obviously he's on the road.
09:32Any other quarterback you go, you go on the road.
09:35They're very conservative, but heck look at the Miami Notre Dame game.
09:39At some point in the second half, I said, Notre Dame has picked a, a, a young redshirt freshman
09:45quarterback.
09:46Okay.
09:47That's your guy.
09:48That's your situation.
09:49Right.
09:49At some point in time, you have to let them throw the ball past the line of scrimmage.
09:55Like you can't just keep throwing sideways crap over and over again and expect huge results
10:02downfield.
10:03And I think Miami got conservative as well, you know, and, and, and, you know, uh, Beck
10:10didn't make any mistakes.
10:11I think, you know, they're on, they were on the road.
10:14They were conservative.
10:15They didn't want him to make mistakes.
10:17He made one mistake.
10:18Did he for, did he pressure himself?
10:21Yeah.
10:21But let's be honest.
10:23No, Ohio state won the national championship last year.
10:26They're pretty damn good.
10:28And, you know, I think chalk it up to a, to a bad game.
10:31And, and listen, last year, Northern Illinois beat Notre Dame in week two.
10:35Is there going to be a team that laid an egg in week one that makes the playoffs?
10:41Probably, you know?
10:42So, you know, it is what it is.
10:44As you move on, I mean, all I can go on, the head coaches everywhere in college football
10:50are paid a lot of money and they are not going to trot some guy out there in a starting
10:55position, especially quarterback.
10:57If they don't think that that guy can win games for them or gives them the best chance to
11:02win games.
11:03Right.
11:04One, uh, one other, before we're out of time here, speaking of head coaches, making a lot
11:07of money, Bill Belichick, we all watched his debut.
11:11It was a great first drive.
11:12And then the wheels kind of came off there.
11:16Is that concerning?
11:17If you're UNC, like, and again, I'm talking about administrators and those who brought him
11:23there because you could see him not wanting to put up with that kind of performance for
11:28very long.
11:29And I don't see how there's an alternative to putting up with something other than that,
11:33because that's your talent level.
11:35Yeah.
11:36Well, I would say this, the concerning thing for North Carolina, and I think you hear me
11:40say it, you hear Channing say it, it comes down ultimately to the Jimmys and the Joes
11:46between the white lines.
11:48And you can have a great scheme.
11:50And I'm sure Bill Belichick had a great scheme, but when you ain't got the dudes out there,
11:56you know, that are, that are great players, that's going to happen like it did.
12:01And it was, uh, what I thought, man, TCU looked like they were a gear faster.
12:06It looked like a different level of football to me watching, uh, watching that game.
12:10And I, if I was a North Carolina fan, I would be very concerned, not because of who the
12:15coach is, but because of the, the hunter guys on scholarship that need to be revamped.
12:24All right.
12:24Gino Toretta.
12:25He's got, uh, Iowa, Iowa state on touchdown radio on Saturday.
12:31And, uh, he will.
12:33So when are you leaving Chicago today?
12:35I am, uh, flying to Des Moines tomorrow morning.
12:38And, uh, Des Moines is about 40 minutes South of, uh,
12:42I like you fly private.
12:45What's that guy like you fly private.
12:47I don't fly private because I own the company, but, uh, I fly a little bit better than Lee Corso.
12:54Apparently who's flying Southwest airlines.
12:56I mean, I mean, the guy's 90 years old in his last episode, the ESPN can't throw to send a private jet for the last freaking show.
13:05Isn't it Corso?
13:06Like that seemed like, like, what are you doing there?
13:08Like, I mean, like I would have been embarrassed when that, the, the gate agent posted that.
13:15If you're ESPN or ABC or Bob Iger, you know, the CEO, I'm like, come on, dude, the guy's 90 years old.
13:22Take care of him.
13:23It's his last episode.
13:25How about Belichick doing the post-game press conference instead of in front of some party city balloons?
13:31Did you see that?
13:33No, I didn't see it.
13:34Oh, I got it.
13:35I got to tweet you this.
13:36All I, all I, all I, I saw a couple of things posted where his girlfriend, I don't know what the hell she's walking around in a tire or shoes, but like, it didn't look like it was a very, uh, comfortable pair of air Jordans or something like that.
13:53It was like, I'm like, dude, you're in a football sideline.
13:58Yeah.
13:58Yeah.
13:59Put a, put a pair of tennis shoes on and walk around.
14:02It was like, she couldn't even walk in the shoes.
14:04Wait till I send you Belichick speaking at the post-game press conference.
14:10They, for whatever reason, they decided a balloon display was appropriate because it was a festive, you know, opening night of football under the Bill Belichick era.
14:19And it looks ridiculous.
14:20And they were saying like, Hey, maybe on the 41st unanswered point, someone should think to take the balloons down before Belichick goes to the podium.
14:29But I'm going to text that.
14:30I got, I got something.
14:31I'm sure you saw it.
14:32I don't know.
14:33My buddy sent me, I'm not on Facebook.
14:35It was some cartoon of Michael Jordan and Bill Belichick.
14:39And there was a hot tub involved or something like that.
14:41And I was like, man, the internet, the internet, the internet is undefeated, dude.
14:49You can't, you can't win.
14:51You ain't lying.
14:52You ain't lying.
14:53All right, Gino.
14:53We'll talk to you next week.
14:55Yep.
14:55See you guys.
14:56See you guys.
