00:00Joe Zgacki is on the Toyota of Hollywood hotline.
00:03He was on the call last night.
00:05Cane's victory over number six, Notre Dame.
00:10What a way to start the season.
00:12It got a little dicey at the end.
00:14Maybe it didn't need to be, but to come away with a win after all this buildup to the game
00:22and you wonder, you know, is there going to be this massive drop off from Cam Ward to
00:27Carson back and who's going to show out as a potential receiver for like everything got
00:34answered last night.
00:35I feel like you have to be on top of the world, Joe.
00:38Oh yeah.
00:38I thought it was a great game.
00:40I thought, you know, for a first game, sometimes those first games can really be sloppy and
00:46not entertaining.
00:47This felt like it was a game, you know, midway through the season.
00:51These two teams were ready.
00:53They were prepared.
00:54Um, I didn't really like Notre Dame's game plan that much, although I was thankful for
00:59it.
00:59Um, just, you know, CJ Carr, they didn't want to do anything with him at the beginning of
01:03the game.
01:04I think his first 10 passes were within three yards of the line of scrimmage.
01:08So that being said, Miami did a great job shutting down their run.
01:13Notre Dame averaged 3.3 yards per carry, 93 yards rushing.
01:17Jeremiah Love had, uh, 33 yards and ultimately Miami beat Notre Dame at their game.
01:24Miami did not turn the ball over.
01:26They were the more physical team, most of the game and they dominated, you know, you
01:33talk about the middle eight, the end of the first half, the beginning of the second half.
01:36Well, it was the end of the first half and then eight minutes into the second half with
01:40that incredible third quarter drive.
01:42So, and the other thing I think about Hawk is, um, where is the Miami program?
01:48Now we have a long way to go, uh, in this season, but a couple of years ago, we started
01:55the season against Alabama and the third quarter or rather the fourth quarter, it was 41 to three
02:01because that was the disparity of the rosters.
02:05And last night, you know, we started the fourth quarter midway through the fourth quarter.
02:09It was Miami 24 to 14.
02:11So I think that shows you where the roster has changed, where the programs have changed.
02:16And that was doing it against, uh, the team that played for the national championship a
02:20year ago.
02:20And it's still a very, very, very good team.
02:23Is that the biggest win of the crystal ball era thus far, Joe?
02:28I mean, hopefully there's more to come this season, obviously, but I think, you know, you
02:32think of that Florida Gators win last season felt great week one, but UF kind of fell off
02:38after, and it just, it was diminished a little bit based on how UF finished the season.
02:43I mean, I think yesterday biggest victory of, of the crystal ball era.
02:47Yeah.
02:48I called it his collector's item.
02:50I think so.
02:50You know, you know, I, I think it's the signature win they beat Clemson.
02:55I think you see the progress.
02:57Hopefully when the story someday is written on, you know, Mario crystal ball in the program,
03:02you'll look back and go, Oh, I see.
03:04I saw the signs.
03:05They beat Clemson, uh, in overtime one year, and then they beat Florida the next year.
03:10And then they took down Notre Dame.
03:12So, uh, it will, it's the biggest win for him right now.
03:16No question.
03:16It becomes more meaningful if you keep winning games, but.
03:20I don't think you can underestimate the value of this win.
03:24Notre Dame's the top 10 team, sixth in the country.
03:27Um, great recruiting.
03:29Marcus Freeman is a hell of a coach.
03:30I think he's a really good coach.
03:31Um, and they have, you know, the fourth quarter got dicey, but it got dicey.
03:37Some of that was Notre Dame.
03:38They did a really good job with their defense.
03:40They leaned in on their defense or put it on their, uh, their defense to get back in the game.
03:45And they kind of strangled Miami there for a little bit, but hurricanes were able to, uh,
03:50down the stretch, force Notre Dame, use all, all of their timeouts, kick the field goal.
03:55And then, you know, put themselves in a position where the game was on CJ Carr's shoulders.
03:59And I think in past seasons, the, you, you'd have been really nervous about the defense.
04:06I forget where CJ Carr took over at the end there for the final, you know, plays maybe
04:11at the 30, 35, somewhere around there.
04:12But you, in, in seasons past, you'd be like, oh, they're going to drive, you know, 40 yards
04:18with no problem, kick a tying field goal.
04:20And we're going to have to sweat this thing out.
04:22But that defense was just so good.
04:24There were so many takeaways from the game last night.
04:27Carson Beck looked phenomenal to me.
04:29Just so composed Malachi, Tony.
04:32I mean, the guy was incredible.
04:36I told you, I heard you at the beginning of the game.
04:39That was one of your guys where you said, keep an eye on Malachi, Tony.
04:42And he was, he was unbelievable.
04:45CJ Daniels had one of the best catches you're ever going to see.
04:47Carter Davis, the kicker was that dude.
04:50Like, I, I, I mean, there, there were so many takeaways from that game, in my opinion,
04:57where you're like, huh, does Carson Beck has, have anyone to throw to?
05:01Uh, yeah, he's got someone to throw to.
05:03I thought the, the running backs looked all right.
05:06The offensive line, you mentioned the drive to start the second half.
05:09I mean, the offensive line was moving men with no problem.
05:14It was really, uh, it was like you watched it.
05:18Barry Jackson had tweeted something out like, Hey, you're watching the blueprint come to life.
05:23You're watching Mario Cristobal's blueprint come to life.
05:27Yeah, I would agree with that.
05:29He's talked a lot about, uh, his blueprint that it will work.
05:32And it's, you know, it's size.
05:34It's a big man sport.
05:36Miami's a bigger team.
05:37They're a more physical team.
05:39Uh, they're built in the trenches.
05:41Uh, and I, you know, I mean, I'm here at the U.M. right now.
05:45And I spent a lot of time in the summer.
05:48I'm not, well, you know, I want to overestate it, but enough time with, with, uh, Shannon Dawson,
05:55uh, Miami's offensive coordinator.
05:56And every time I left the conversation, I thought to myself, man, this guy, he's really
06:02confident.
06:03He's really confident about his quarterback and his offense.
06:08And I could see why last night the execution was at a high level.
06:12And I think he's in really good sync with Carson Beck.
06:15And the other thing is I watched CJ Daniels in practice, and I was thinking about it going
06:20to the game last night.
06:21And one of the things in practice, uh, the practice that I, that, that I was at never
06:26saw him drop.
06:27The ball wasn't on the ground with Carson Beck.
06:29Nobody's dropping the ball.
06:31And, uh, the receivers were excellent last night and Ruben Bain was a monster, uh, last
06:39night.
06:40The, the amount of territory he covered on that interception was magnificent.
06:45And one of the things I like about Bain is, um, they had a scrimmage here on a Sunday,
06:52a couple of weeks ago, and I was standing behind, uh, Corey Heatherman, right in the
06:57sidelines, but I wanted to really get a good feel in the defense and Bain wasn't in the
07:01game and he was standing to my left shoulder.
07:05Um, and Miami, the offense had a delay of game penalty, right?
07:10It was Carson Beck and Bain yells out from his sideline.
07:13Hey, Carson, keep an eye on the clock, keep an eye on the clock.
07:18Use that big brain of yours.
07:20Come on.
07:21And I thought, you know, that's pretty cool.
07:23These guys are competing against each other in this setting, but Bain is being a great
07:27teammate.
07:28It's really being supportive of Carson Beck, even though it's offense against defense.
07:33And I think it just kind of illustrates the player that in person that Bain is.
07:39What was your biggest takeaway from watching Carson Beck yesterday?
07:44I mean, look, Joe, this guy's a Heisman favorite going into last season.
07:47I know you watched a million of his throws at Georgia.
07:51I think all of us did.
07:52And the expectations are through the roof.
07:54Uh, but I think naturally tempered expectations a little bit, just because you're going up against
08:00a really good team in Notre Dame and the idea he's going to live up to Cam Ward, just it's
08:06unfair to him specifically.
08:07But what was your biggest takeaway?
08:09Because Hawk and I were saying earlier, just so cool, so composed.
08:14And when he has the ball in his hands right from the beginning, it's like this feeling
08:18from a fan's perspective, watching the game of like, you trust him to be smart with the
08:23football.
08:24Coolest guy on the field.
08:26I mean, it's like his head was in the refrigerator, you know, he was just cool and calm 12 in
08:31a row at one point.
08:32My takeaway with Carson Beck is, I don't know why he was disrespected in the off season.
08:37I don't, I don't know what was up at Georgia, but a lot of that chatter was coming from Georgia.
08:43And, uh, again, 24 and three, they can tell me all they want about, oh, intangibles.
08:51And when the backup quarterback came in last year, they were going to rally around him.
08:55I'm thinking to myself, he won 24 of the 27 games there.
08:59He must've had something going on in terms of leadership and chemistry.
09:04But what I saw in the game is what I've seen here in practice.
09:07Very, um, smart quarterback.
09:10The arm is not an issue.
09:12Ball comes out fast.
09:14And what I like most about him, uh, and, and I look at this at quarterbacks is he's
09:19decisive.
09:20He knows where he wants to go with the ball.
09:22And the other thing is, you know, he's six, five, you can see, he sees over the top of
09:27the defense, the touchdown pass to, to Daniels, uh, he's going backwards, but it's almost like
09:34he's on his toes thrown over the top of the defense.
09:37I think he's going to have a really good season, uh, based on what we saw last night against
09:42Notre Dame.
09:42I really like him and really smart, very articulate.
09:46I think he's going to be great, a great ambassador for the program.
09:50You, uh, you talked with Mario this afternoon there on campus.
09:54Just spent about 45 minutes with him.
09:56Yes, I did.
09:57What do you have to say?
09:58Uh, he's really happy with this win.
10:01I think there's a relief.
10:03He was impressed with the physicality of his team.
10:06He was impressed with, um, uh, being in shape.
10:12The conditioning because Notre Dame came here thinking they were going to, they were going
10:16to wear Miami out with their multiple substitutions on defense, uh, with their defensive line.
10:22Um, he was impressed with their execution, uh, on the, the third quarter drive physicality.
10:31They showed on that drive, really happy with, um, the defense and the defensive tackles, Scott
10:37and Blay and Moten.
10:39They handled the physicality of Notre Dame, uh, and also very pleased with, um, the secondary.
10:45You know, that was a problem.
10:47I think you look at the secondary and you've got homegrown guys in Frederick and, and Damari
10:52Brown and then, um, the kid Bryce Fitzgerald that came in from Columbus who a freshman
10:57who was on the field and a lot of critical situations last night, but then all these,
11:01uh, other players that came in, there was not a level.
11:05There was not a drop-off when they subbed or change their combinations.
11:08There wasn't a drop-off.
11:10There was a lot of pride among those guys to, to maintain the level of play.
11:15So he's really happy, but now I think, um, tomorrow when they go back to practice, he's
11:21probably going to get after him pretty good.
11:23Hey Joe, what was the environment like yesterday?
11:25Look, I mean, I'm watching on TV up here in New York.
11:27It's obvious that the crowd had an impact.
11:31Like it was obvious, especially with CJ Carr.
11:33But I remember that Trajan bandy pick six.
11:36I, and I've been at game sevens of NBA finals.
11:40I went to a Superbowl.
11:41Like I've experienced some pretty loud environments.
11:45Nothing will ever top the Trajan bandy pick six at hard rock stadium.
11:50Um, you know, almost a decade ago.
11:52What was it like yesterday?
11:53Like, did it compare to that at one point, especially with the Bain interception?
11:58Like what was it like, man?
12:00I thought it was pretty good.
12:02I thought that roof was going to come off.
12:05We're judging.
12:07Uh, I thought the decibel level went to like 11 or 12, you know, it was right there.
12:11Uh, maybe, maybe not quite as intense as the Notre Dame game of 17, but in 18, Miami had
12:18a great comeback against Florida state.
12:20Certainly it was like that.
12:22They, they played a great, great role.
12:25And I think that university of Miami fans, um, they too sometimes don't get enough credit.
12:33And, and I would say they are creative.
12:37And I, I did this podcast in South Bend last week.
12:40And I said, I don't think you guys know what you're walking into.
12:43You know, when you were here for the orange bowl game, three quarters of the stadium was
12:47for Notre Dame.
12:48I said, I don't, I don't think CJ car, anybody else knows what you're coming into.
12:52And, and I think a Miami game is, is like an old Oakland Raiders game.
12:57It's Halloween.
12:58You know, people are crazy and I like it.
13:01And I think they should promote it more.
13:03Be crazy.
13:03The crazy, the better.
13:04I think I haven't been to an English premier soccer league game.
13:07I watched some of them on TV, but I think it's like a English premier premier soccer league
13:11game.
13:12Did you see the way some of the people were dressed last night?
13:15Yeah.
13:15It was cool as hell.
13:17Huh?
13:17Yeah.
13:17It was cool.
13:18Yeah.
13:19It's wild.
13:19And I think it's different, you know, some of these Notre Dame people are walking in
13:23there with all these nice shirts and thinking, oh, you guys, you have no clue what you're
13:27walking into.
13:27This is the lion's den.
13:29This is the lion's den of lion's den, man.
13:31This is, uh, you know, I I'm guilty of it as well.
13:33We always say there can never, you can never replicate the orange bowl and the feeling when
13:38there's a big game and you have a good team.
13:40That hard rock stadium is unbelievable because I can vouch for Solana.
13:45That 2017 game was unparalleled.
13:49Right.
13:49The team's got to do its part.
13:50You got to give them a game.
13:52You got to give them effort.
13:53You got to give them a team.
13:55You know, you lose the middle Tennessee, uh, it's pretty hard to, you know, create a great
13:59environment, but now they're past that.
14:02And so now I would expect the environment, the rest of the year should be great.
14:08I hope we have a good one for Bethune and then South Florida.
14:10And then the Gators, man, that thing should be off the, off the charts.
14:14Right.
14:14Uh, if you're still, if Mario's still around you there on campus, I know you're in Coral
14:19Gables right now.
14:19If Mario's around, can you just tell them, uh, that a USF game is setting up to be a trap
14:24game?
14:25Let them know.
14:25I'll walk back there right now.
14:28Yeah.
14:28Just let them know.
14:29I feel like that's setting up to be a trap game.
14:32We don't want to, uh, we don't want to get too, uh, too complacent leading into the Florida
14:36game.
14:37Is USF here or is it up there?
14:39Oh, it's here.
14:40And the Notre Dame game only matters now.
14:42It only matters if you keep winning, right?
14:44Don Schuller used to say, well, big wins only matter if you win the next one.
14:48So you got to win the next one and the one after that and the one after that, Joe, FSU
14:55looked good too.
14:55I mean that, you know, you get to Florida, you get to USF, knock on wood.
14:59That's going to be tough to go up to dope now.
15:01Um, I don't know if it was more of an indictment on Alabama or just the fact that FSU nailed
15:07it in the transfer portal, but still an impressive victory nonetheless.
15:10Well, when you beat Alabama, the way they beat Alabama, I would say, so I wouldn't want
15:14to be Caleb DeBoer today or Paul, Paul, Paul, Paul Feinbaum.
15:19Yeah, he guaranteed Miami was going to lose.
15:22Aren't you going to taunt him?
15:25Yeah, I'm waiting for Crowder to come back.
15:28I need, I need backup.
15:30I got, I need backup.
15:33All right, Joe.
15:34They, they muscled Alabama.
15:37Did you like the lines we gave DBJ?
15:40Did you like the lines that we gave DBJ?
15:43He did the big fat meatballs and he did the line for Bane, Reuben Bane.
15:46He did Bane from Batman.
15:48Um, you know, I heard the meatballs one and I wasn't sure what was going on.
15:57Perfect.
15:58Perfect.
15:59Mission accomplished.
16:00In a game lead on, in a game like that, you know, all these big plays are happening.
16:06The crowd's going crazy.
16:07And, and, and by the way, you, you probably know this, you know, I'm going to complain
16:12for a moment, but our booth's like nine miles away from most of the action, right?
16:16Yeah.
16:16So, but you got to hit the bullseye, no matter what you have to hit the bullseye.
16:21So there's all this concentration on God that I wasn't CJ Daniels that caught that touchdown.
16:26And I can see out of the corner of my eye, right out of the right corner of my eye, I can see
16:31Vic and done with all these, you know, hand waving, all this stuff, jumping up and down
16:37and pointing.
16:38And I'm thinking, uh, it must be the line must've been.
16:42Yeah.
16:43Is the Powerball drawing tonight?
16:45They do that on Monday nights.
16:46It's over a billion dollars, Joe.
16:48Yeah.
16:49If you won Powerball tonight over a billion dollars, would we hear you on the call Saturday
16:56for UM Bethune-Cookman?
16:59Well, that's the wrong question.
17:00The answer is yes.
17:03The question then is though, but for how long?
17:06Right.
17:06Would you care about the call?
17:08You don't want, right.
17:09You, you win a billion dollars.
17:11You have to get that set up.
17:13Correct.
17:13Right.
17:14But you would still in the process of setting it all up, you would go call the UM Bethune-Cookman game.
17:20You have, you have, you are, uh, going to have a billion dollars there about in the bank in,
17:25you know, a matter of weeks or months, you would go call that game on Saturday.
17:29Yes.
17:30You would.
17:31Yeah.
17:32Of course.
17:33I don't know.
17:34I think, I think you'd be there for UF.
17:36Uh, Bethune, I think you could, uh, you could let Hollywood handle it.
17:40Yeah.
17:41I think we'd hear Darrow and DVJ.
17:43I'll be there.
17:46See you, Joe.
17:47Good luck on the power.
17:48Great call last night, by the way.
17:50You did a great broadcast.
17:51Oh, thank you.
17:52I appreciate that.
17:53Very much.
17:54Appreciate it.
17:54Go find Mario before he leaves.
17:56Tell him not to fall into the USF trap.
17:57I would, you know, take the camera out and walk the hallways.
17:59But the last time I tried that, it didn't go so well.
18:02Oh, it was delightful.
18:03Go ahead.
18:04We want to, I want to watch you walk around.
18:05What do you, what do you got there?
18:07You'll have to do go.
18:08I have to turn it this way.
18:09Right.
18:10Yeah.
18:10I like it when you keep it on your face.
18:12Yeah.
18:12Hold on.
18:13This is what I enjoy.
18:15You want to walk around, but it's just a closeup of your face.
18:17It's literally, it's literally that, that is where the, the, the coach is.
18:21Yeah.
18:21All the coaches have their offices right there, Hawk.
18:23Like down that hallway.
18:24Go barge into a crystal ball's office.
18:26Where's his office?
18:30I'm walking to his office.
18:31All right.
18:32Let's walk into his office.
18:33I just want to tell him not to fall into the trap for USF.
18:36You want, you want me to, I'll show you what's pretty cool about going to his office.
18:40All right.
18:41All right.
18:41This is the old hallway.
18:43Okay.
18:44So now we're entering the football building.
18:47Oh, all right.
18:48Football building.
18:50Okay.
18:50So now we're there.
18:51Any, any Ken Masur sign?
18:53Ken Masur.
18:54Here we go.
18:57Can you see this?
18:59Oh, I love that area.
19:01So cool.
19:02Yeah.
19:03See that?
19:04Yeah.
19:04See if you can find Dan Cilio.
19:07Huh?
19:08I say see if you can.
19:11Well, there you go.
19:12How about that?
19:13We got Brian McKinney, Dennis Harrah.
19:16Did you know Dennis Harrah?
19:17Want to go to the team meeting room?
19:20Here we have a nice meeting room.
19:22This is where.
19:23Yeah.
19:23How about that?
19:24All the, all, you know, got all Americans.
19:26They have a, they have a plaque from November 23rd, 2019 there, Joe.
19:31Gino.
19:31Look at Gino.
19:33Huh?
19:34There's Gino.
19:35Gino.
19:36Yeah.
19:36Mike.
19:36Can you, can you, can you walk over to the campus radio station at the student union?
19:41See if they have a plaque up for me.
19:43Yeah.
19:44That's too far.
19:47That's the hallway.
19:48That's coach Chris's office down there.
19:50Let's go bang on his door.
19:51I would like to, you know, I would like, I would, I would like to get to the Bethune broadcast.
19:59Well, just, can you put the phone right outside his door and I'll yell not to, not to fall into a trap game at USF.
20:05Okay.
20:05Hold on.
20:06All right.
20:06I'm crazy.
20:08I'm going to get Joe fired.
20:09Probably.
20:10I know.
20:10But I just, I don't want him to focus too much on USF the following week.
20:14I want him to, and I, and I don't want him to lose track of Bethune-Cookman this coming Saturday.
20:18No, I think they're, they're all in meetings right now.
20:21We have to be.
20:21Found on the door.
20:22Let's find out.
20:22Yeah.
20:23I'm like, I'm like a golfer now.
20:25I'm doing a golf match.
20:27I've gone silent.
20:28Okay.
20:29His door is closed, but this is it.
20:32I'll tell you what slide.
20:34Is there enough room in the door underneath it to slide the phone under?
20:39And, and I'll just, I'll say a few words to him.
20:42Go ahead.
20:43You can go from right here.
20:44So my coach, coach Cristobal, can you hear me?
20:50Trap game alert coach trap game alert.
20:55USF week three trap game alert.
20:58Okay.
20:59Keep the lights behind Joe's a gacky.
21:02If you hear me, coach, you want to know something to be honest with you?
21:04He just walked in the door over here.
21:07There's a board.
21:08Oh, wow.
21:10Legend about that.
21:12There you go.
21:13All right.
21:13All right, Joe.
21:14Don't get fired.
21:18Now he just walked into this room.
21:20He went into the defensive staff conference room.
21:23Oh, I want to talk to them too.
21:24They had a good game.
21:25Let me, let me talk to them.
21:26They're all in their, their game planning.
21:29I'd like to help them out.
21:31Yeah.
21:31That was a pretty good tour.
21:32You have to admit, right?
21:33That was nice.
21:33I enjoyed that a lot.
21:34Nobody on, although now I'm thinking about some guy in the Palmetto, probably some wondering
21:38like, what, what are they talking about?
21:40Walk over to the pool at the middle of campus.
21:44Let's see what's going on over there on Labor Day.
21:46Now you're stretching it.
21:48All right.
21:48We got to go, Joe.
21:49We love you.
21:50All right.
21:50See you later.
21:51There you go.
21:51Joe Zagaki.
21:52That was delightful.
21:54That was absolutely delightful.
21:56Joe on the go.
21:58Now we're going to go.
21:58Joe on the go.
21:59Joe living life.
22:01Joe in the world.
22:02Um, yeah, that's funny.
22:04I hope Mario heard me because I don't want him to fall into that trap.
