00:33Gino will be on the call Saturday, Wisconsin, Oregon.
00:37And you can hear that all across the nation on Touchdown Radio.
00:42Hello, Gino.
00:43A little disappointed.
00:44I didn't know we were coming in the studio today.
00:46That's close enough.
00:48I could have met you all there.
00:49Maybe we could have left.
00:50We're under a mandate.
00:52We have to be here.
00:54And so if you'd like to join us here every Thursday, you can make us a mandate.
00:58You know, I've been to the facility outside to see Steph the Specialist
01:04and give him his credentials for the Miami game.
01:07So I just, you know, I didn't realize you traveled still to Dade County, Hawk.
01:12Gino, let me know.
01:13You and I could carpool.
01:14We live fairly close to one another.
01:17You don't mind sitting around?
01:18Come kidnap me.
01:19I won't struggle at all.
01:20Until 6, 630, putting up the podcast.
01:23You're okay with that, right?
01:24And then, uh, yeah, sure.
01:26All I got over there all afternoon.
01:28What, uh, what happened with the Dolphins, with the Hurricanes on Friday?
01:31They put up this stinker on Friday against Louisville.
01:34And listen, it is almost impossible to go undefeated in a season.
01:38I think everybody knows that.
01:39But do you take the loss to Louisville as some sort of huge warning?
01:45Or do you kind of shake it off and say, look, those games are going to happen.
01:49They're still one of the best teams in college football and don't get caught up on it.
01:53Well, I, I think you would say they're still one of the best teams in college football.
01:58I think I get hung up on it from, that's a home game.
02:02And, and if you watch this season, it seems like there's a lot of colleges that when they go on the road, they're not either focused or, or they lay an egg on the road and, and don't play well.
02:15To do that at home, uh, is, is very disappointing and to do it on a week and a half of almost two weeks of, of preparation, um, is, is definitely disappointing.
02:29I think that disappointing or worrisome because there's a difference.
02:35Well, it's disappointing.
02:36I mean, it's still the same players that a lot of people before the game thought they were the best team in the country based on their, their resume so far to date.
02:44So I think, you know, the Notre Dame win keeps looking better.
02:47Hell, USF win keeps on looking better.
02:49Cause they, they, they, the only loss is Miami.
02:52I just, I, to me in, in, in with this transfer portal thing and, and where it's not, you know, we're, we're in a locker room for five years with each other.
03:03It becomes the coach's job everywhere is man.
03:08You have to focus these kids in each and every week and each and every week.
03:14You can get beat, you know, you can get beat.
03:17The one thing I'm a little disappointed in is the fact that, you know, when you're Miami and you're top five in the country, you are everybody else on your schedule, especially that's not ranked, which was everybody on the rest of the schedule.
03:33So you are their game.
03:34You're their ticket for credibility.
03:37And if you don't think you're going to get their best coaching effort, if you don't think you're, you're going to get their best physical effort, because those dudes, if you watch, they're playing and say, Hey, I'm some of the fastest guys on the, on the field.
03:52And I'm playing for how high I'm going to get drafted in the spring.
03:57And, and, and, you know, Brahms going out there playing loose.
04:00Hell, he loves being at Louisville.
04:02He grew up there.
04:03He played there.
04:04And, and they've, they've had a great plan for us every year.
04:08They've played us.
04:09I mean, do they have better players than us?
04:11No, I don't think they have a better roster than us, but they had a better plan and they believed in it.
04:16And when you're in college, man, belief is 90% of the battle.
04:20Cause you could get some kids where, you know, they may not know where they're going, but hell, if they believe they're going in the right direction, they're going to end up beating you at the end of 60 minutes.
04:29Yeah.
04:29And Gino, it was obvious early in the game.
04:31They had athletes.
04:32Hell half of them from down here, to be honest, when Charlie strong started coming down here and Teddy and Lamar, all those guys, we know about them.
04:39The thing that was perplexing to me was the trenches.
04:43There's supposed to be four or five guys on the offensive and defensive line of the Canes that are supposed to go first or second round.
04:49Louisville was dominating the trenches, not just for one quarter, pretty much the whole game.
04:53What did the Canes have 60 yards rushing?
04:55It was ugly.
04:56Like I did not expect the domination inside.
04:59Well, not only that, but at some point, Channing, when you're handoff on inside zone, like five or six times and it gets absolutely stoned.
05:08Don't you, at some point run outside zone counter?
05:11Like there's got to be an adjustment, whether it's like, hell, let's try a trap.
05:16If they're going double eagle the whole time, at some point in time, you can't just jam it in the middle and go off the edge.
05:23I mean, really the success they had was when they handed it to Tony off the edge and he was able to score.
05:29So, you know what, use the speed and, and, and work those edges.
05:34But I, I just think, you know, and, and even the players after the game and their comments that, you know, they said, Hey, they were doing stuff that we weren't prepared for.
05:43And that, that to me is concerning, shocking and, and that, and, and, and, you know, I just think football is, is, you know, you know, coaches say it's, it's not about them.
05:56It never is about your opponent.
05:59If you just execute within whatever your offensive scheme you have and whatever defensive scheme you have, have, there's an answer for what the other team is doing.
06:09So it truly isn't what the other team's doing.
06:12It's just, okay, can I execute my own crap better than you, better than you can defend it.
06:18And you know what, we didn't execute, they get down inside a field goal range to kick for a tie.
06:26And at that point, first off, we have three timeouts and there's 40 seconds left.
06:29I'm like, okay, why would we be not taking one to just calm everybody down one and just give some pointers.
06:39And oh, by the way, the pointer is if they blitz and they catch us, do not try to jam the ball to the tight end.
06:48Running a hot route.
06:49I mean, no, no offense, but you know, Channing, the tight end is coming out of his stance.
06:53He's like, wait a sec.
06:56He's checking the corner of his eye thinking, damn, the backer just left.
07:00Okay.
07:00It's hot.
07:01By the time his head's around, the ball's past him and the guy makes a great play in the interception.
07:05It's like, dude, throw the ball away.
07:07Like, like I would just be like, all right, they got us.
07:10They got us.
07:11You know, sometimes they guess right.
07:12And you throw it away.
07:14You live to play another down.
07:15And, and we didn't do that at the end of the game.
07:18Gino, I'm just looking at the schedule very quickly.
07:21And look, I know there's a lot of football left to play, but Georgia Tech is 4-0.
07:26Virginia Tech is 3-0 atop the conference.
07:29Miami does play SMU, who's currently undefeated.
07:32I mean, they're going to have to take care of business, right?
07:34Because GT doesn't play UVA or SMU.
07:37And I don't know if they'll end the season undefeated because they have to play Georgia in their final game.
07:41But their conference record's pretty much a joke the rest of the way.
07:45It's not out of the realm of possibility.
07:47They end their conference record.
07:50ACC play undefeated.
07:51Virginia is another one of those teams.
07:53I don't think they will, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.
07:57Miami can't drop another game here if they truly want to make the conference tournament.
08:00No question.
08:02The disappointing thing, because of the loss and they haven't had a lot of conference games yet, they need help at least how it looks right now.
08:11But I would say to this, and I did it with one of the shows I'm on on Sirius, is, okay, pick the playoff right now.
08:19But if you pick the playoffs right now, if you look at the ranking, Miami probably get bounced out of the playoffs because you got to put, you know, BYU in as the, as the big 12.
08:30And you got to put a group of five representative in.
08:35And, you know, I don't know if the ACC is getting a second team in the playoff.
08:40It's not going to be like last year because the eight, the SEC is so strong right now.
08:45You'd probably put five teams out of the SEC into the top 12 based on performance.
08:52And so to me, that means you can't rely on anybody else.
08:56They have to, they have to win out.
08:59They have to win the conference.
09:00And I think that every ACC school should be looking at it that way.
09:05And, and, you know, for, I just, to me as a player, I'd never, you never wanted to put it in anybody else's hands and have to rely on.
09:15Either somebody else losing or you getting a benefit of the doubt vote to say, all right, they're in the playoffs.
09:22And, and that's where Miami is going to need some of that, but they, they got to come out and play, but don't think the rest of the schedule.
09:28Like, listen, last Thursday, what did we talk about?
09:32They're going to be favored and they're playing a bunch of teams that are not ranked.
09:36So we thought, okay, they could truly skate, play well, but skate undefeated, right?
09:43Well, now with the loss, those games, those teams are now thinking, man, Miami's gettable that that's, that's what they're thinking.
09:53And that's where it's up to them this week to come out against Stanford, who just, you know, shock Florida state and go out and beat the hell out of them.
10:03I mean, there's no, I mean, we're favored by almost 30.
10:06I was, I was going to ask you, they're 30 point favorites.
10:09So do they do themselves a world of good within their own team, even to go out there and just shellac that team, just keep the pedal to the metal the entire time and come out of there with one of those victories that a, everyone forgets about Louisville on Friday night, but B goes, wow.
10:30Did you see what that team did to that team?
10:34A hundred percent.
10:36But has Mario ever done that?
10:38No.
10:38I mean, I wonder if this one, like, if we can recognize that it's kind of important to win this.
10:43I think people recognize, and I, and I think when, when James Franklin lost or, or when he lost his job, I should say, why did he, what was one of the main reasons he was a 20 point favorite two weeks in a row and lost.
10:59That was like one of the decisions the first time ever.
11:02So, you know what these games, you know, whatever the line is set.
11:06And, and they know stuff that, that we don't know, but if it's me to get my own team's confidence back up, I'm, I'm pedaling to the metal.
11:15And I don't, and I don't, I don't give a crap if somebody says I'm running up the score.
11:20I'm starting from, from the kickoff and it can be like Robert Bailey before the cotton bowl started.
11:26I'm going to run down and knock somebody out on the opening kick.
11:29And he did.
11:30And that's, and that's what you got to do, because what you have to, you have to basically show not only this opponent, but the rest of them that are on their schedule.
11:40That was a fluke.
11:41We didn't play well.
11:42And it sucks that it was at home, but you have to basically say, you know what?
11:47Don't even think we're going to ever do that again.
11:49And don't ever think you're going to have a chance to win the game.
11:52And that, I think they have to make that statement, especially starting this week.
11:57But with Carson Beck, that means he's going to throw a lot.
12:00And it doesn't seem like he's making great decisions with that ball.
12:03You know, we talked to who was it?
12:05Uh, John Michaels earlier in the week.
12:07And he was like, it had to be the game plan to get those deep shots.
12:10Cause there's no reason for him to continue to throw that ball right into three deep.
12:15They were sitting back.
12:15They were giving you the underneath.
12:17Like what, what did you see out of Carson Beck with him throwing those four picks?
12:21The last one, like you said, the last one was just a bad decision, but those, those three
12:25jump balls, why would he even let that go?
12:28Well, I would say, and I, and I told you at Florida game, I thought he was tentative throwing
12:32the ball.
12:33And I still think he's tentative throwing the ball.
12:36And, and I, and I don't know if that's a confidence issue.
12:41I don't know if it's a, it seemed like once he made one mistake, it, you know, kind of led
12:47to, you know, he wasn't the most confidence in the world, confident.
12:51In the world.
12:52And, and, you know, you know, Channing, I think as a quarterback, the best quarterbacks
12:56have the shortest memory.
12:58And, and the one thing when, when I'm watching and, and I told you, Hey man, if I threw a
13:04pick, your face is on TV, you're the quarterback of Miami.
13:09And all my mom used to say was stop saying the F word right after an interception, walking
13:16off the field.
13:16And that's what I wanted to see.
13:18I wanted to see, Hey, I'm pissed at myself from Carson Beck and move on.
13:24And I didn't, and I didn't see that in four picks because he really threw more than four
13:29picks because I mean, there was a, I would say kind of a ticky tack roughing the passer
13:34call where he got one of them back.
13:36Um, but you know, maybe throwing in a traffic, but you know what, if I'm going to throw in
13:42a traffic, God damn, throw the ball.
13:45Yeah.
13:45Say it.
13:46Say it.
13:47No, don't do it.
13:48No way.
13:50I'll be firing that damn thing.
13:51Now you know why his mom was yelling at him when he was coming out of the huddle, because
13:55you see how fired up he's talking about interceptions.
13:58That, that's what, that's what I didn't see.
14:00And, and, and I think, listen, I, I, Shannon Dawson, I think is one of the best OCs out
14:06there in college football.
14:07I think he puts together great game plans.
14:09I think that at times it looks more conservative.
14:13I don't know if that's generally his nature to be that conservative, but it's, it's how the
14:18head coach, you know, wants the game and, and, and wants it to be run.
14:21Um, but, uh, I think they were offensively, there was plays to be got and, and they didn't
14:29get them.
14:29And, and, and I think that, um, you know, that's where it's critically important for them this
14:35week to get back on the deck and, and literally show the rest of those teams.
14:40Hey, you know what?
14:41That was a fluke.
14:42You know what?
14:42Hey, we, we messed up.
14:44We didn't, we didn't come out a hundred percent.
14:46Let's put up a hundred.
14:47Yeah.
14:47And it caused football, man, with the transfer portal.
14:50Hell Ray, Jenny, do you guys, I mean, did Vanderbilt ever score on you when you were
14:54at, at Florida?
14:56I mean, bro, they're top 10 and they just beat LSU and they might be Missouri this weekend.
15:03It's just, I mean, college football is, is totally different now and everybody can get
15:09you on a weekend.
15:10And if you're not up for it and if you're not prepared for it to give your best effort,
15:15you're probably going to lose.
15:17And I like, to me, the best teams, you know, Alabama is one of the best teams, Ohio state.
15:22If they don't have their a game and they still beat you that that's a great team in college
15:27football right now.
15:29Gino Toretta.
15:30He joins us every Thursday, courtesy of the local five 19.
15:34You almost, you almost got me.
15:35How does that work with the, uh, with the YouTube streamers would have seen it, but we'd
15:42have dumped you over the air.
15:43You were fired up.
15:45Do you still have to get dumped?
15:47Do you still have to get dumped on the, on the air now?
15:50Oh yeah.
15:52I mean, who knows how long that'll last, but yeah, for sure.
15:55With all the changes in how America does business, you can count on one thing.

16:14I'm curious on the, uh, on the basketball news.
16:18Channing, what do you think about it?
16:19I mean, now they're letting November 1st.
16:22Apparently now college players can bet on professional games and bet on professional
16:28sports.
16:29Yeah.
16:29I can't imagine.
16:31I can't imagine that, uh, developing into a problem.
16:34I don't see why.
16:35What's the, I don't, I don't see any problem in it.
16:38You know, I mean that those buildings are all built on winners out there in Las Vegas,
16:42you know, 18 year olds with million dollars of NIL money and a gambling app.
16:46I just don't know if it's the smartest thing in the world.
16:51Back in your day, Gino, you couldn't even accept the free beer at the tavern.
