00:25Before we talk a little college football, I remind you the best place
00:28to get geared up is Canesware in Davie, canesware.com online.
00:34Gino, so Tuesday we read that college game day on the UM campus.
00:40I don't know if you saw this.
00:42College game day on the UM campus this past Saturday
00:45was the second highest rated game day in the history of ESPN.
00:51And so I was saying to Crowder and Solana and Jimmy and some guests yesterday,
00:56what does that mean to you?
00:58Like, how do you read into that?
01:00The way that I read into it is that there is a national appetite
01:04for the University of Miami when their football team is relevant.
01:08They still resonate across America.
01:12I don't think there's any question.
01:13I think Miami, Florida, Florida State.
01:15I mean, you know, you think about it, you know,
01:18when I was in school and a little before Chan,
01:21it was essentially the national championship went through the state.
01:24So I think the national, you know, nationally people think, okay,
01:28is this truly the time that maybe it does go through Miami and Florida State?
01:34We know it's not going to go through Gainesville after 24 yards of offense.
01:39But, Hawk, it's nice of you to talk to me because you did go to the game.
01:45You knew I was at the game.
01:47You knew I was going early to the game.
01:50I did not.
01:50And yet I see all kinds of posts and crap on social media,
01:54and you don't even come say hello.
01:56I'm right next to the QAM broadcast booth.
01:58I mean, I understand Channing.
02:00Man, it's a Florida Gator thing.
02:02And you know what?
02:03He didn't want to talk to me.
02:04It's a Miami thing.
02:05But you?
02:06Come on, man.
02:07I did not know that you were going to be there other than in the broadcast arena
02:11because I knew you were doing the game nationally for Touchdown Radio.
02:15But all of a sudden at halftime, I think it was halftime,
02:17I see you out on the field and they're talking about the stats.
02:20It was before the first and the second quarter.
02:22So you still had three quarters to come say hello.
02:24I couldn't get all the way up there.
02:26I was down in the lower bowl.
02:27I couldn't even get up to the club level.
02:29You couldn't get up there?
02:30I couldn't get up there.
02:31Joe Z has half of Section 114 come up during the game to say hello.
02:35Oh, Don Bailey has 120 come up during the game.
02:37I didn't know what to do.
02:38I didn't know what to do.
02:39I didn't, Mike.
02:40You know where they had me park?
02:42They had me park at the bottom of a canal.
02:44My car's still down there.
02:45You got my phone?
02:46Like, text me.
02:46Like, you know, I'm getting, hey, hey, I'm getting a statue.
02:50I think I could have worked to get you up in the booth.
02:53I know.
02:53I was stymied all night long, much like Florida's offense.
02:57Hey, Gino.
02:58It was a boring game.
03:00If I left that box I was in, I probably would have gotten a fight.
03:05Because Canes fans, they were giving me pure hell.
03:09And I messed around and wore a Gators t-shirt, too.
03:12So it was just, yeah.
03:14Well, at least you wouldn't have been like that, dude.
03:16I saw somebody, I think it was only a day, posted some Gator fan that was like just,
03:21I mean, he was probably like a .4 blood alcohol content standing next to the bathroom
03:26just peeing on the wall.
03:28I was like, oh, Lord.
03:30Like, how early do you, how early and what do you have to drink to just think that that's
03:36a good idea?
03:37And then the whole time people are videoing, he's not even looking over nothing.
03:40Just, oh, man, that was bad.
03:42I got there about 6.45, 7.
03:45And there were guys that were 5.3 cussing me out.
03:48And I was like, do you know how this is going to end if I really get upset about this?
03:54Well, they were saying, do you know how this is going to end on the football field?
03:57And you had no answer for that.
03:58And that's why I didn't want to leave the box.
04:02So, Cham, when are you already courting Kiffin?
04:08Or, you know, when does Florida?
04:11Because it seemed like all the Florida people were not a question of if,
04:17it was a question of when.
04:18I might have text Lane Kiffin just to feel out what's going on.
04:24How's he feeling?
04:25If he, you know, if he's comfortable doing it.
04:27I'm hearing John Gruden a lot, too, which I don't have a problem with.
04:31He just hadn't coached in so long.
04:33I don't know if Gruden would be a great college coach.
04:36I think he can coach, but I don't know about college.
04:38I think Gruden would be a great coach.
04:41I think both of them are great coaches.
04:42I think it's just he hasn't been, he hasn't done it in the college game.
04:47So, I would say maybe there's more of a question mark.
04:50Obviously, he's in Tampa, lives in Tampa, and that.
04:54And, you know, he's a total football junkie.
04:57So, he may have to get used to some other things that, you know,
05:01you have to deal with in college football nowadays.
05:04But, when you're talking X's and O's, I think he'd be, either one of those guys
05:10would be pretty darn good.
05:11But, hopefully, you guys keep Napier.
05:13He's building.
05:14He's building.
05:15I know.
05:16I know why you want us to keep Napier.
05:18Y'all can whoop our ass every year.
05:20No.
05:23Gino, did you have any sort of takeaway regarding Carson Beck's game?
05:27I think, like, the one thing that a lot of Canes fans were a little trepidatious about
05:33following the game was that Carson Beck didn't look fantastic, how he had in previous games.
05:38In my opinion, I mean, the one interception was bad.
05:42But, he just looked like somebody who understood the game plan.
05:44They were going to win it up front.
05:45He didn't have to force anything.
05:46They were going to grind out the game.
05:48But, I wonder if you took anything else away from his performance.
05:51I would say he looked very tentative.
05:54There was guys that were open.
05:55And, he was inaccurate with the ball.
05:58He didn't throw checkdowns.
06:00Now, I don't know what the deal was.
06:01You know, field conditions.
06:03I know it was wet and things like that.
06:06He threw three picks against him last year when he was a Georgia Bulldog.
06:09And, you know, listen, sometimes that memory comes back and you don't want to take any risk.
06:17And, I think he realized that.
06:19But, man, we were – I mean, he had 24 yards of offense and one first down in the first half.
06:26And, it was still only 10-0.
06:27I mean, I was going crazy because I was like, man, end the game in the second quarter.
06:32Just be aggressive.
06:33You know, when you guys were talking to OG yesterday about Miami Dolphins offense,
06:38it sounded like if you were just said, hey, I'm talking about Miami Hurricane offense,
06:42it seemed like the same thing.
06:44Because, at some point in time, like, we used to always be, you know, in Erickson,
06:49we're going to take a shot downfield.
06:51And, I don't know if it was once a quarter.
06:53We're going to take a shot because if that DB doesn't think you're going to try to run by him,
06:58they're just going to squat and it's not going to – there's going to be no big plays.
07:02And, Miami did not take a shot downfield.
07:05I mean, Shane Matthews was a couple boosts down and, you know, two old quarterbacks.
07:10And, Shane and I were like, gee, many Christmas.
07:13Boy, was that a boring game.
07:14Neither team taking shots downfield.
07:17Neither team aggressive with the ball.
07:20But, I thought Beck was a little tentative.
07:22I think he realized how good his defense was and how lackluster the Florida offense was.
07:31And, I think that he was probably just – you know, he was tight.
07:34He just seemed like, I'm not going to make a mistake to risk this with my team.
07:39I mean, but Florida, man, they cut it to six points in the fourth quarter.
07:43I mean, that was a ball game.
07:44You get a turnover, ball squirts out, and it could have been a whole different deal.
07:49Now, it didn't work out like that.
07:50I just – to me, it's like, you know, Notre Dame were up by two touchdowns,
07:55and we didn't step on their throat.
07:57Florida, 24 yards of offense in the first half, and we didn't step on the throat.
08:02That's the only thing I would say, though, if you said correct something.
08:05I mean, that's a Mario thing.
08:06That's kind of – like, he's happy to grind it out once they've got the lead.
08:11Yeah, but grinding it out, you know, when you've got the lead is not two scores.
08:15I mean, college football is, you know, three, four touchdowns.
08:20Okay, then do whatever you want.
08:21Play four-corner offense.
08:23I mean, you know, you go on the road to Tallahassee in a couple weeks,
08:26it's not going to be a situation where, you know,
08:30you can just grind it out from the start because they have some explosive playmakers
08:35and, you know, one guy slips out there.
08:38The game was too close for my liking as a Miami fan.
08:42And, you know, as a broadcaster, I know you have to watch it all,
08:46but as a Canes fan as well, I am – like, Castellano,
08:50I'm very interested in his UVA game because, to your point,
08:54DJ Lagway is not as good as Castellano right now.
08:58And whatever Florida State can do, I think this game can be a little –
09:02you know, I think the weather did affect the Canes approach
09:05because it was raining.
09:07It was downpour.
09:08I was up there in the box hiding.
09:09But is he – is he exceeding expectations?
09:13Because I didn't know he was this good.
09:14What was he at, UCF and Boston College?
09:16He's impressive right now.
09:18He's a good player.
09:19You know, he's an athlete.
09:20He can run around.
09:21He can spin it.
09:23And I think that as long as you're smart and fairly accurate with the ball in college,
09:29you can get the job done.
09:31And I think he's a good enough athlete, feels comfortable in their offense.
09:36I think with Florida State this week, and you know this, midweek games suck.
09:41And midweek games suck worse when they're on the road for you, the road team,
09:46because all of a sudden they're Sunday, Monday, and you're thinking,
09:50okay, I'm going to try to get healthy.
09:51And it's like you're putting in the game plan Monday morning, and, you know,
09:56Wednesday you're, you know, you're jumping on – you're getting ready to jump on a plane.
10:00There's not a lot of work.
10:01You got maybe two work days, truly, to get prepared for a team.
10:07And that's why I would say, Hawk, why the line's not bigger is road teams –
10:12you know, it does – I can remember Texas A&M came here years ago,
10:15and they were top ten.
10:16And it was a Thursday game, and, you know, they probably had a better roster than Miami.
10:21And people were like, oh, you know, Texas A&M's going to come in and kill us.
10:24And I was like, dude, it's a Thursday game.
10:27I go, they just came off a big game.
10:29They don't have enough time to prepare.
10:31It's just not – it's just – it is what it is.
10:34And I think – but Florida State should have enough weapons to kind of dispose of Virginia.
10:40But they have had some problems in the past, and that's what people are thinking.
10:45But Castellano can play – you know, one thing with Lagwe, one,
10:51apparently he should have had shoulder surgery after the bowl game last year.
10:54But his quote-unquote camp decided against it.
10:58He doesn't practice in the spring.
11:00You get a lot better as a quarterback getting reps in the spring.
11:03Doesn't practice in the spring.
11:04Doesn't practice in the fall.
11:05He somehow gets a hernia.
11:08And Shane said he pulled his calf muscle in a walkthrough.
11:12I mean, he was 250 pounds.
11:14That homeboy's thick.
11:16And, you know, thick and missing a lot of reps.
11:19Yeah.
11:20That's – you get what he's producing.
11:23You get a guy that's inefficient and still is making mistakes of a young freshman quarterback.
11:30Do you know, to go back to a Thursday game, I'm still hungover from Saturday on Thursday.
11:35I'm still hungover from Saturday.
11:37I'm still hungover from Saturday.
11:37I'm still hungover from Saturday.
11:38We played the different areas.
11:40Those guys don't know what beers are.
11:44Nowadays, they're taking the collagen and the creatine and all the protease supplements.
11:53I was with you.
11:55I was taking a disco and mad dog.
11:56Porn pitchers.
11:57Yeah.
11:58Yeah.
11:59Um, Gino Toretta is with us on Thursdays, courtesy of the local 519 plumbers union with
12:05all the changes in how America does business.
12:07You can count out one thing, the union trained plumbers of local 519 join a winning team
12:13today with local 519 plumbers union, a proven path to a strong career visit plumbers 519.com.
12:21You've had a long relationship with plumbers 519 Gino and someone suggested on the text
12:27line that Solana with his brand new mustache looks like he might fit in at the old union
12:33meeting.
12:33Uh, what do you think of, uh, what Solana's got working there?
12:37The stash maybe, but I think when he showed up with those size 14 arms, that string coming
12:44out of his, out of his t-shirt, I think they may think, well, this obviously is a corporate
12:50guy and not a, uh, not a blue collar guy that's lifted, uh, some, uh, some heavy machinery
12:57equipment.
12:58If you, if you will, Hawk, he shows up at the union meeting.
13:02They're like, he's got the facial hair, but something's not adding up upper body.
13:07It looks like, what was the guy's name?
13:09Was it, was it three's company or, uh, Hawk our time?
13:13Like the three's company or the, the guy that had the, would, would put the pack of cigarettes
13:17in his white t-shirt Snyder, Snyder from one day at a time, like the building is super.
13:24Yeah.
13:25Yeah.
13:25You know what?
13:26Solana looks like a super belt on.
13:29He's got a little Snyder in him.
13:31I think you got to put that up on your, on your social, find a, find a picture of Snyder
13:35and say doppelganger for, uh, for Solana.
13:40He does look like Snyder.
13:42He does.
13:43I don't, I don't think we need to put that up on our social.
13:46So a lot of you're not even old enough to know who Snyder is.
13:52I mean, I can do a Mount Rushmore of supers because you're going to have Snyder.
13:56You're going to have a bookman of course, from, uh, good times.
14:00Yeah.
14:01And, uh, the super Joe Pesci, he was, he was a super another, uh, they don't even call it.
14:08They don't call building maintenance guys supers anymore though.
14:11Do they?
14:11They don't.
14:12I don't.
14:13Hey, I'm Hawk.
14:14I'm, I'm helping out Gulliver high school, their quarterbacks.
14:18Cause Wesley Carroll son's a receiver.
14:19So he asked me to come help out.
14:21So I help out.
14:22And, and, uh, we had to go in the gymnasium and the kids laughed at me for calling it
14:27the gymnasium.
14:31I go, I go, I know your generation.
14:33Should all you guys do is like shorten the words sound as short as possible or use the
14:38first initial of like five or six of them.
14:41They killed me last week and the week before for using town car as a, town, the car, town,
14:48who says, you know, I love a town car, when you, when you got a town car in New York, you
14:54could take a six hour nap in the back of that.
14:57Thursday night, you'd be on the way to LaGuardia, just snoozing away in the back of a town car.
15:03I love a Wes Carroll reference on the show, by the way.
15:05I love Wes Carroll.
15:06He's a good dude.
15:07Gino Toretta.
15:08He's with us on Thursdays.
15:10What game are you doing this weekend?
15:11Uh, LSU Ole Miss.
15:13So, uh, should be, should be a big one.
15:15It is like, this has come down to the last possession the last few years.
15:19It should be a lot of offense.
15:22Um, little, little trip out to the, uh, Grove prior to check out the scenery and, and maybe
15:29sample some of the, uh, some of the barbecue out there and offerings.
15:34What's that feeling?
15:35The fine offerings of fine offering.
15:37Well, you can't sample all of the fine, you know, they're not all offerings.
15:41They're just scenery.
15:42If you will.
15:43If you see, uh, if you see Lane Kiffin, tell him I love him.
15:47I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll wear a shirt.
15:51I should get a sign and say, Channing Crowder loves you.
15:54Like when he walks, I'll go down on the field.
15:56So when he comes on, when he's walking his dog on the field, leading, leading the team,
16:00I'll make sure he knows you're getting, he's getting love from Florida.
16:05Gino Toretta, courtesy of the local five 19 plumbers union, visit plumbers five 19.com.
16:11Thank you, Gino.
16:12All right, guys.
