Miami Hurricanes radio analyst, Don Bailey Jr, shares his biggest takeaways from the Hurricanes season opening victory over Notre Dame.
Transcript
00:00Don Bailey Jr. is on the Toyota of Hollywood hotline.
00:04He joins us on Thursdays.
00:06So, DBJ, obviously the radio analyst for Miami Hurricanes football.
00:10By the way, a zillion people texted in.
00:12Jennifer Capriotti is who I was thinking of, the party girl from the world of tennis.
00:17Jennifer Capriotti, thank you to everyone who texted in.
00:20DBJ, the great radio analyst for the Hurricanes football games here on 104.3 WQAM.
00:26This Saturday night, 7 p.m., you can hear Canes and Bethune-Cookman right here.
00:34Canes will look to go 2-0 on the season.
00:36So, DBJ, we'll give you some new lines, but let's talk about the Notre Dame game for a second here.
00:42They tie the game late in the fourth quarter.
00:45Canes ultimately end up with the upset.
00:47They had looked good the entire game.
00:49They had that little hiccup there in the fourth quarter.
00:52What a great way to start the season, no?
00:54Well, it can't get any better than that.
00:57I mean, it made me want to go out and eat some meatballs, man.
01:01Big fat meatballs?
01:04No.
01:05Hey, as long as they're made out of turkey.
01:07You know what?
01:08I would tell you, I would tell you, it was better than advertised.
01:12And I don't think, I hope, let me say this,
01:16I hope Hurricane fans realize how far this team has come over the last three years.
01:23I mean, it was three years ago about this time.
01:25You're asking me, how does Miami lose to Middle Tennessee State University at all?
01:30And now you're beating Notre Dame, who was in a national championship game last year,
01:36and they didn't have the lead in the ballgame.
01:39I mean, Miami controlled the game.
01:43I mean, was it as pretty as anybody wanted to know?
01:45But it was the same type of dynamic that you saw Ohio State and Texas and Clemson and LSU.
01:52I mean, it's the same type of game.
01:53It was a heavyweight fight.
01:54Everybody's using that analogy.
01:56And I think it was a fantastic win.
01:58And, you know, Coach Cristobal said something in the postgame about he made a promise to Reuben Bain
02:09and Danez Cooper and to those kids that came in that if they would come
02:13and they would trust what he's going to do, this is where they're going to be.
02:17And guess what?
02:18I mean, he kept his promise.
02:20Now, that doesn't mean, you know, that they're going to win a national championship,
02:24and that doesn't mean that the season isn't going to have challenges.
02:26But the distance they have come under his watch, in my opinion, is nothing short of outstanding.
02:34DBJ, you look better than Jennifer Capriati.
02:37I'll tell you that much.
02:39Thank you, bro.
02:41But, no, DBJ, I know, and this is what you like to do.
02:46This is where you played.
02:48The biggest surprise Sunday night was the lines of scrimmages.
02:52Is that what we were expecting?
02:54And we talked about it before, Mario's an O-line guy.
02:57You're an O-line guy.
02:58They were moving them offensively and defensively in the trenches.
03:04I know it's not a sexy conversation, but I think that's what won the game.
03:09Well, I'm going to tell you, I agree with you wholeheartedly.
03:12I think Miami's D-line was better than Notre Dame thought it would be,
03:18and they produced, and really, when the game was on the line,
03:22two defensive linemen saved the day, right?
03:26There's no question.
03:27Number three and number four made it happen.
03:30And then, offensively, on the offensive line, you know, one sack, unfortunately,
03:35but Miami had three sacks.
03:38They had one, and Miami ran the football.
03:40I mean, they won time of possession and dominated it, really, in the first half,
03:45and I think that had a lot to do with it.
03:47But you're right.
03:47It was a trench game, and that's, that, if you're Notre Dame,
03:52historically, forever and ever and ever, they've been the line of scrimmage team.
03:57Well, Miami beat them at their own game.
03:59Now, I will tell you that having watched the tape, which you see differently than you watch TV,
04:07the group that I think had as big an impact as the line of scrimmage that no one will ever talk about
04:14is the Miami wide receivers.
04:17And I'm not talking about the catch, and I'm not talking about Malachi.
04:22I have never, and this never's a long time for me,
04:27I have never seen in a football game a core of wide receivers consistently for 60 minutes
04:36block the way this group blocked.
04:38I mean, they decleted guys.
04:40They tormented them.
04:42They went after them every single way.
04:45And you, on the TV copy, a lot of the times you don't see it.
04:48And I really didn't pick up on it when I was at the game because I don't, I got to watch the ball.
04:53But when you watch the tape or you go back and watch the game,
04:56you watch these receivers and they tormented.
05:00And I think they, I think they damn near broke them.
05:02Notre Dame secondary with how hard they blocked.
05:06And you think about it, Channing, when is the last time ever at any point,
05:11would anybody ever say the wide receivers had the best day they've ever had blocking?
05:15I've never, so I think it was just an entire team effort.
05:18And how it was summarized to me was Miami went into that football game with one of the goals
05:27that they wanted to have was how well do the people play that don't have the ball?
05:33And that specifically was probably directed to the receivers.
05:37So those guys, when they didn't have the ball, they played out of their mind.
05:41And it's not comfortable for them to be like that, but it looked comfortable on Sunday night.
05:45Man, it was fun to watch.
05:48You did a phenomenal job, DBJ.
05:52We played both calls that you did.
05:54Big fat meatballs was excellent.
05:57And Bain was excellent.
05:59I mean, you were on top of your game, game one, just like the Hurricanes, DBJ.
06:03Well, thank you very much.
06:04You know, it's a big time game, bro.
06:06It was Miami Notre game.
06:08What else?
06:08But what's better than that?
06:09Well, actually, don't turn Bethune-Cookman into some sort of trap game or overlook or whatever.
06:16We still need a good performance out.
06:18USF is the trap game.
06:19USF is the trap game.
06:20I know.
06:20I'm so nervous about that game, man.
06:23I'm so nervous about that game.
06:24I'm saying it because I've heard you talk about it for a week.
06:27That one is textbook trap game written all over it, man.
06:33Here's some lines for you for this Saturday night.
06:35Are you ready?
06:36Sure.
06:37All right.
06:38Have you ever heard of the rapper Ski-Lo?
06:41No.
06:42All right.
06:43I bet you know this song, though.
06:44Go ahead.
06:45Fire this off.
06:46I wish I was a little bit taller.
06:48I wish I was a baller.
06:49I wish I had a girl who looked good.
06:51I would call her.
06:52I wish I was a little bit taller.
06:54I wish I was a baller.
06:56I wish I had a girl who looked good.
06:57I would call her.
07:00Well, that's an easy one.
07:01I like that one, man.
07:02Good job.
07:03Good job.
07:03Anytime there's an undersized guy out there, I'm imagining Bethune-Cookman's
07:08got some undersized players out there.
07:10I mean, we would face it when we were facing big, big 10 corn-fed teams.
07:14We were the undersized team.
07:15So, yeah, drop that out.
07:18I like that one.
07:20Can you dance the electric slide?
07:23Well, I invented it.
07:30If they fire up the electric slide at a party you're at, will you do it?
07:34Can you get in there?
07:36I'll be the first one out.
07:37Well, actually, I'll be the second one out there.
07:38My wife will be dragging me right behind.
07:41She's 100% slider.
07:44Excellent.
07:44Boogie, boogie, boogie, boogie, boogie.
07:46Here it is.
07:47Give them the line.
07:48You got to know it.
07:59It's electric.
08:00Boogie, boogie, boogie.
08:01You can't hold it.
08:03It's electric.
08:04Boogie, boogie, boogie.
08:06If I get that out without screwing it up, it'll be a miracle.
08:10I'm going to call Joe Z because I want him to be the boogie, boogie, boogie guy.
08:15I do, too.
08:16Let's get Joe Z to boogie, boogie.
08:18Now, look.
08:19Fair enough.
08:19I've seen Joe Z out there, too.
08:21Joe Z can electric slide.
08:23Really?
08:23In his khakis?
08:25Well, he.
08:29Because sometimes the khakis don't have enough give to electric slide well.
08:33It's a boogie, boogie.
08:35He's got some boogie in him.
08:37Come on.
08:40All right.
08:40I want, like, Joe Z and maybe even Victor, and I think it would be fun if there was a
08:47boogie, boogie, boogie from the entire, you know, booth up there.
08:50That would be fun.
08:52You ever seen the movie Rush Hour?
08:54Chris Tucker?
08:55Yeah.
08:56Yep.
08:56All right.
08:57Here's a line from Rush Hour.
08:59Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?
09:04Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?
09:08That's going right after an official calls a flag on us.
09:13That's it.
09:14I was thinking that you say something that, you know, that Joe doesn't understand.
09:20And he, like, you know, pauses a beat, and then you just look at him and go,
09:24do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?
09:27Like, put Joe on the spot.
09:29DBJ, go real deep football.
09:34Go, like, oh, the three technique was backside, and we should have slid the front.
09:39Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?
09:45Channing, that's how it's going to get done, buddy.
09:47Reel him in like a fish.
09:50Reel him in.
09:51We'll give you one more.

10:03Don't you fight it till you try to do that conga beat.
10:06Come on, shake your body, baby, do the conga.
10:08I know you can't control yourself any longer.
10:11Feel the rhythm of the music getting stronger.
10:13Don't you fight it till you tried it?
10:19Do the conga?
10:20Is that right?
10:21that's never happening first of all okay and in my and my suggestion is very is very logical
