Transcript
00:00Zach Gelb can be heard nationally across the Infinity Sports Network every weekday afternoon.
00:06Comes to us Wednesdays from the WFAN studios in New York City.
00:11He is on the Toyota of Hollywood Hotline.
00:14He's in the Boomer and Geo studios.
00:18See the sign behind you.
00:21Did the Hurricanes, let me go college football first.
00:24Did the Hurricanes put the country on notice?
00:27Look at you, Gelby, throwing up the U.
00:30Did the Hurricanes put the country on notice Sunday night?
00:35I wouldn't say they put the country on notice, but they showed that this is a team,
00:40especially when you look at the way that Clemson performed up against LSU,
00:44that Carson Beck is better than the way that he was treated this offseason.
00:48And he still has a lot to prove, don't get me wrong.
00:51And Mario Cristobal, that's another one.
00:54I've never understood the Mario Cristobal hatred.
00:57I understand this is a big year and he still had more to prove at Miami and missing the college football playoff last year
01:02with the Heisman Trophy finalist in Cam Ward was disappointing.
01:06But I look at Mario Cristobal.
01:09I remember back in 2012, I wanted like he was up for the Temple job.
01:12I wanted Temple to hire him.
01:14They ended up making a good hire in that rule.
01:16But this is a guy that has walked into the horseshoe and has defeated Ohio State when he was at Oregon.
01:21And now with Miami has a huge win up against Notre Dame.
01:24So it was a great start to the Miami season.
01:27But now you got to see the consistency throughout the year.
01:30And it feels like anything short of this team making the college football playoff at this rate would be disappointing.
01:35And did the swing of opinion, LSU beating Clemson, did those swing to you?
01:42UM, you know, winning, beating Notre Dame, who was supposed to, you know, defending, you know,
01:47number two team in the nation, went to the national championship.
01:49Or the story is Arch Manning not looking very good against Ohio State.
01:55What was the biggest swing?
01:57What was the biggest team for you that swung either positive or negative?
02:00Yeah, I'm going to say it's Clemson.
02:02I still think Texas is going to be fine.
02:04I still think they'll make the college football playoff.
02:07Can Clemson still win the ACC?
02:09Absolutely.
02:10But with that being said, I had visions of Clemson getting back to where they were five years ago.
02:17And that was actually contending for a national championship.
02:20I understand Garrett Nussmeyer is a solid quarterback.
02:24Brian Kelly is a really good coach.
02:27But you look back at that game, LSU's defense, which is vastly improved.
02:31That's been their biggest problem in the Brian Kelly era.
02:34It's vastly improved.
02:35But they look like the 85 Bears up against Clemson.
02:38And Cade Klubnick was God awful.
02:40And he was supposed to be the most consistent or the best quarterback in the nation.
02:45So I look back at it.
02:47Clemson, I thought going into the year they could win a national championship.
02:50Now I'm just kind of all back in on Clemson saying, all right, you know, maybe they'll win the ACC again.
02:55But when it gets to these bigger games in the playoff, I think what they're going to do up against LSU and what they did up against LSU will pop back up again.
03:01Who would you less want to be today?
03:05Bill Belichick after the balloon fiasco gets routed in his UNC debut?
03:11Or Kalen DeBoer, who goes on the road, two touchdown favorites as Alabama, number eight in the country, gets routed.
03:19Fans storm the field and his team is ranked lower.
03:24The Alabama Crimson Tide is ranked lower.
03:26His team than any Alabama team since 2008 as a preseason pool.
03:32Now I'm going to sound like Sid Rosenberg, but let me preface this by saying Kalen DeBoer is a dear, dear friend.
03:37I've known him since Fresno State.
03:38He comes on the show multiple times throughout the season when he was at Washington, now at Alabama as well.
03:44I'd rather be Bill Belichick, though, because it's all like, let's be real.
03:48Urban Meyer went to the NFL for one year, didn't even make it a whole year, was a mitigated disaster.
03:54A few years removed, is anyone talking about Jacksonville?
03:57No.
03:57People look at Urban Meyer and they say the two national championships at Florida and the national championship at Ohio State,
04:03and then also all the controversy that did follow Urban Meyer.
04:06But people don't mention Jacksonville.
04:08So if Belichick goes to UNC and sucks with a team that had no expectations this year,
04:12none of us really knew what the expectations were,
04:14are people going to look back at Bill Belichick and still not refer to him as one of the greatest NFL coaches of all time?
04:19Absolutely not.
04:20Of course they're going to do so.
04:21So I look at Caelan DeBoer, he was awesome at Washington.
04:24They were in a national championship game.
04:26Last year, remember, in late September, they beat Georgia.
04:30And it looked like Jalen Milrow was going to be a Heisman Trophy finalist,
04:32and Caelan DeBoer was going to be in the running for coach of the year, and Nick Saban who?
04:36Now a year later, you look at how that season ended, they lost to Vanderbilt.
04:41They lost to Tennessee.
04:42I know Tennessee's a solid team.
04:43They lost to Oklahoma when they still had a chance to make the college football playoff.
04:47At the end of the season, whatever, it's a bowl game that was irrelevant where they lose to Michigan.
04:50And you start off the season with Thomas Castellanos at Florida State running his mouth.
04:56And what happened was Alabama, who used to be the bully, got bullied.
05:01Alabama needed, needed to win that game to still show that they're still Alabama because you can't allow Castellanos to talk that smack and then kick your ass for 60 minutes.
05:11Sid, by the way, was good, good friends with Pete the Boer, who was the Panthers coach for a while.
05:17And Mario Cristobal.
05:19That's where I first knew of Mario Cristobal.
05:21I'm not kidding.
05:21What was he at?
05:22FIU?
05:22And Sid would always have him on us.
05:24He was sucking up to FIU.
05:25Pause up.
05:26Solana's running the Sid Rosenberg playbook all these years later.
05:29They won as well.
