00:00John Michaels is on the Toyota of Hollywood Hotline, and he is, as you can tell by what he's wearing, a diehard Miami Hurricanes fan.
00:09He was there Sunday night. You can hear John Michaels mornings on 680 The Fan in Atlanta.
00:15You can hear him nationally on ESPN radio. Before we talk football, I always remind you the best place to get geared up with Canes merch this season is Caneswear and Davey or Caneswear.com.
00:28I will in the in the in the issue of fairness, because I know John Michaels and I were going to talk from the Hurricanes point of view.
00:38I did text with Brady Quinn this morning. He's not disappointed in what he saw. He's going to join us tomorrow.
00:45I got today right after the first segment was over a DM from Sean Wooden.
00:52Hmm. He said, slow down, talking bad about my Irish. Too early. We got another historic rebound in the works.
01:04So in the issue of being fair and balanced, I wanted to give you Sean Wooden and Brady Quinn's opinion of things.
01:12John, you were there on Sunday. It did get a little dicier at the end than it probably should have.
01:17But what a heck of a win to start the season. Right. Oh, it was everything that Mario Cristobal is talking about building towards building lines of scrimmage, building dominance, being able to run the ball, being able to take it, take care of a game against a quality opponent.
01:32Like, I hate Notre Dame with every ounce of my life. Them and Florida State and Florida. My son is not allowed to go to those schools. I don't give a damn if he gets 12 scholarships. He's not attending. I hate him.
01:43My wife got to see the level of vitriol between Miami and Notre Dame fans. But at the end, Mario Cristobal can look and go, I built a dominant offensive line that dominated Notre Dame's ass all over the field.
01:55I built a great defensive line that when the game was on the line and I heard Shannon Dawson talking about it today, he said, I had no problem kicking the ball because I knew our D-line was going to go get pressure at the end of the game.
02:05And Ruben Bain and Akeem Mesidor looked like they were shot out of a cannon. They look like a team that has sustainability. And I think that's something we haven't had.
02:13Like the 2017 game, we always go back to that. It was awesome. 41-8. And then things fell apart.
02:19And last year, you know, everything seemed like there was a lot of miracles involved. Cam Ward was pulling rabbits out of his hat time and time again.
02:26But it never felt like with that defense, it was going to stay together. This feels like, and I'm going to say it right now, a true national title contender in the year 2025.
02:37Why not Miami? We've got a six-year quarterback. We're going to be the best team on the lines of scrimmage every time we take the field.
02:44And I think the receivers, the defensive backs, the scheme, it's only going to get better as the year progresses.
02:50And, John, that's what my biggest takeaway from watching that game was that they dominated the line.
02:56Both sides, the line was moving backwards for Notre Dame. And then when UM had the ball, they were whooping the ass to get those gaps open.
03:04Did Carson, did Carson better pick up right where he left off before the injury? Because you watch a lot more Carson.
03:09I watched him in the SEC. But, hell, I was questioning him. I questioned Cam Ward, too. He looked good.
03:15Yeah, Carson looked really good. I thought they were conservative some with the play calling a little bit.
03:21And I think that was partly, look, we knew we could run the football. They wanted to play the clock game.
03:25They didn't want to get into Syracuse. But Carson Beck did exactly what you wanted to.
03:3021 or 20 or 31, 200 yards, throws a couple of touchdowns.
03:34Did he get fortunate that C.J. Daniels makes one of the greatest catches you'll ever see?
03:37Absolutely. That ball's probably intercepted nine out of ten times, and C.J. Daniels comes down with it.
03:44But he didn't put him in harm's way. I thought the times he took shots down the field, it was man-to-man coverage,
03:49and he was going to take opportunities. He looked like a guy that had been a six-year quarterback.
03:53He was in command of the huddle. Never was Miami panicked at the line of scrimmage,
03:57trying to run and get before the play clock was going. It was, I'm running this offense.
04:02I'm getting to my checks. I'm doing everything I need to.
04:04He kind of spoon-fed the younger receivers. Malachi Toney, my goodness, that kid should be at American Heritage right now.
04:10He looked like the best receiver on the field. And I think a lot of that had to do with Carson Beck's leadership.
04:16Like Crowder, everything they talked bad about him at the end of his time in Georgia,
04:20he did just the opposite on Sunday night with Miami.
04:23We got the right guy to lead us, and I think he's got a chance to lead us to the promised land.
04:27Maybe you can donate some of those funds from your Hard Rock bet winnings to Malachi Toney's NIL fund, John,
04:33because we got to keep that guy here for three seasons.
04:36So explain to me exactly how this happens with Carson Beck then.
04:40Is it just like anger and bitterness because he ends up leaving or he had a bad season?
04:46Where, like, there's this narrative coming out of mostly Georgia, but I think most of the national pundits or media kind of grabbed onto that narrative, too,
04:55that he just wasn't a talented quarterback anymore because I'm not saying he's going to be Cam Ward,
05:01but he looked pretty close to it in that first appearance the other day, John.
05:05Yeah, I think part of it, Solana, it had to do with he did have a bad, like, four-game stretch where he threw a bunch of interceptions.
05:10He threw three picks against Texas, but they won the game.
05:13He threw three Yanks against Alabama, they lose. He throws three interceptions against Florida.
05:17They ultimately win that game, and he wasn't very good against Ole Miss.
05:20So I think there was a stretch there where Carson didn't play well, two-fold to that.
05:25One, their offensive line was decimated by injuries last year.
05:28They couldn't run the ball, which is very un-Georgia-like,
05:31and I think there were times that Carson didn't trust his receivers who dropped over 30 balls a year ago
05:36and probably cost him another 500 or 600 yards in passing yards.
05:40I think then he started trying to do too much.
05:42Then you tie into that the guy's driving around Athens, Georgia, in a Lamborghini.
05:46That's like driving around Gainesville, Florida, in a Lamborghini.
05:49You just don't see that happen.
05:50Miami, that's a Tuesday.
05:52A Lambo drives by, you go, whatever.
05:54There's another tech billionaire driving down in a Lambo.
05:57I think there was part of it that, you know, the Internet girlfriend,
06:01I'm not sure that people really embrace that.
06:03I'm not sure that Carson embraced that a lot of times with the Cavender twin
06:07and doing all the social media and doing all that different stuff.
06:11And then Carson himself will tell you he's an introvert.
06:13He wants to play ball.
06:14This is what he told us face-to-face at ACC Media Days.
06:18He goes, I want to go to practice.
06:19I want to work out with my teammates, and I go home.
06:22Like, he's not even a Miami lifestyle kind of guy.
06:25And I think, you know, the injury on top of that and then the fact that he left,
06:30I think all of those narratives started to play out.
06:32And you know what happens.
06:33You know, Georgia fans, 605, says this happens on social media.
06:37Then they run with it.
06:39Now, all of a sudden, media members start to believe it.
06:41Carson was always talented.
06:43The guy was 24-3 as a starter at the University of Georgia.
06:47You don't do that by accident.
06:49I get it.
06:49He was playing with uber-talented guys all over the field.
06:52But it's not like he was underhanding the ball and they were running the wing tee.
06:55The guy was standing back there throwing the football.
06:57He had 26 touchdowns, 12 picks.
06:59He threw for 3,600 yards a year ago, which is basically what Garrett Nussmeyer had
07:03and Kate Klubnick.
07:04Yet, they say those two guys are the greatest things since sliced bed,
07:08and Carson had fallen off.
07:09I'm glad he proved a lot of people wrong on national TV on Sunday.
07:13And you saw the emotion pour out after the game.
07:16A kid that had eight months of dealing with an arm injury,
07:18didn't know if he was going to play football again,
07:20and it all came out on Sunday.
07:22Like I said, I'm glad he's on our side now.
07:24You mentioned, obviously, we've mentioned Carson back a million times
07:28and Malachi Tony and Reuben Bain.
07:30I mean, we can go down the list.
07:32How about Carter Davis, the kicker, with, I mean,
07:36I don't know how you felt after the first field goal attempt that went awry.
07:41I was like, this is going to be a disaster.
07:44And every time he trotted him out there,
07:46whether it was an extra point or a field goal,
07:48I started getting nervous.
07:49Because I thought Mario had made a mistake settling for a 47-yarder at the end.
07:54I was cursing him.
07:56It worked out perfectly.
07:58We've got to give some love to Carter Davis, no?
08:01Oh, absolutely.
08:02First and foremost, I didn't even realize it was Carter.
08:04I thought it was Burt Auburn,
08:05the first kick when they snapped the ground ball back there.
08:09I'm not, you know, so many kids have changed.
08:11I'm not familiar with everybody's number.
08:12I'm trying to look.
08:13I'm trying to do this.
08:14And I go, oh, dude, that's Davis.
08:15All right.
08:16I didn't realize he was four for 11 on kicks at FAU until we got ready for the final kick.
08:23So my seats, I'm in section 106.
08:26I'm facing, the kick was going away from me.
08:29And when I say things were puckered this tight and my hands are shaking,
08:33and Crowder, you'll love this.
08:35My wife has never been to a big home Miami game.
08:39She's been to Tallahassee with me.
08:40She had never been there.
08:42I'm, the last five minutes, my heart's beating 400 beats a minute.
08:45My hands are shaking.
08:47And she grabs me and goes, babe, are you going to be okay?
08:49But she thought I was going to have a stroke.
08:50I said, I'm all right.
08:52My whole section, people started turning around.
08:55They wouldn't even watch the kick.
08:57And as soon as he hit it, I knew he nailed it.
09:00And I'm like, that's good.
09:01That's good.
09:02And I'm running up and down the stairs.
09:04I was telling you guys off the air, I have bruises up and down my wrist.
09:08Because you know what happens with drunk fans when they go to hug you and gap you up?
09:12They miss and they're hitting your arm and they're hitting your neck.
09:16I'm like, what in the hell is going on?
09:18But, dude, that kid, he's got balls of feel to make that kick.
09:22It's a little bit damp.
09:24It's Notre Dame.
09:25You're tied.
09:26If you miss it, Notre Dame gets the ball at, like, the 35-yard line.
09:29And they're going to have a chance to go beat you with a field goal.
09:32Carter Davis, bro, you should be with every single woman on campus right now,
09:37having free lunch dates, letting them take you to Joe's Stone Crabbs for making that kick.
09:42Hell, we might have to take you the next time we come down there.
09:46John, was it stupid?
09:47When was Trajan banding?
09:50I call it the Trajan banding.
09:52Was it crazy like that?
09:54Because that was one of the most intense crowds I've ever been a part of in my playing or watching a game.
10:00Was it wild Sunday night?
10:01Oh, it was absolutely nuts.
10:03I never sat down other than halftime.
10:05I had to go get some chair.
10:06I was so hungry and so hot.
10:08I'll be honest.
10:09I was half cocked.
10:10I had drank, you know, about 15 Tito's and Red Bulls pregame.
10:13So, I had to get some carbs in me to make it through the rest of the game.
10:16But that's the only time I sat down, really, from the time we got there.
10:19I didn't sit there on the tailgate, nothing.
10:22It's one of the most wild atmospheres I've ever been to.
10:25Wide right three in the Orange Bowl was a little bit crazier.
10:29Wide left was pretty crazy.
10:31But this, from start to finish, from the fact that you had Trick Daddy and Andre Johnson and Ed Reed and Ray Lewis and Uncle Luke and Rick Ross and just every celebrity that could be there was there.
10:44It lets you know that Miami is that kind of town.
10:46When we're good, we're going to be there.
10:48But I haven't been to many games like that.
10:50And I thought it was going to be cruise control.
10:51We went up 24-14.
10:53I go, all right, this one might be in the bag.
10:55And as soon as I said that, we got a little bit conservative.
10:58They hit a busted coverage play down the field.
11:01And when it's 24-24, I'm like, if we lose this damn game, I'm never going back to work.
11:08And it's going to be a really, really rough next 12 hours trying to fly back home.
11:11But thankfully, they got the job done.
11:13And seeing Mario with Don Bailey Jr. afterwards, like Mario's, you know, very stoic.
11:18To see the smile on his face, it was really good to see Mario have that.
11:22And I was super proud of the team.
11:24And I cannot wait for Florida in two and a half weeks, Crowder.
11:27Because I'm going to be back there.
11:28I better find you pregame.
11:30I better find you.
11:31Ain't working that one.
11:32Because we're going to have to get it in on that game.
11:35Yeah.
11:35Hey, I want to ask you about it.
11:37Because it's funny when people go to, like, Gainesville and they play the Gators.
11:41They'll come out and be like, those people are very nice.
11:44And I tell them, like, we're a privileged crowd.
11:46We're not nasty.
11:47Is Notre Dame nasty?
11:48Like, was there crap talking going on and arguing?
11:50Dude, they were petrified.
11:53First and foremost, any of the national dorks that say, oh, it was 50-50, there might have been 5,000 Notre Dame fans.
12:02And I might be very, I might be nice.
12:07They're at all.
12:08Like, they just weren't there.
12:09The ones that were there, I think where we were sitting, I saw like four.
12:13And they just sat quiet as a church mouse the whole day.
12:17They didn't want to say a word.
12:18The couple of them that walked through the tailgate, they were getting booed.
12:21They were getting heckled.
12:22And they were just head down trying to get wherever they were going to go to.
12:25So I didn't hear any nastiness out of them.
12:27We had the idiot podcasters a week ago calling us unintelligent thugs.
12:32Guess what?
12:33You guys are unintelligent, probably unemployed.
12:35And you're also without a win.
12:37Losers, take that.
12:39That is not the opinion of Brady Quinn nor Sean Wooden.
12:46Oh, you know what?
12:47Hawk, I love to see the – because now Notre Dame's turned into moral victory youth.
12:52All the people I see on social media, you know, we walked into Miami with a redshirt freshman quarterback and we played tough.
12:59I heard for eight months we had no chance on the line of scrimmage.
13:04They're the national runner-ups.
13:05They've got Deion Sanders on one side and Darrell Rivas on the other with Ed Reed in the secondary.
13:11And you had a 17-year-old slice you up like a Ginsu knife.
13:15Take that.
13:16Go back to Notre Dame.
13:17Cry in your damn lucky charms.
13:19I don't want to hear moral victories or anything else.
13:21And I'll tell you, hard rock bet, I put my money where my mouth is.
13:25And this – we went to Joy Taylor's party on Saturday night, which, by the way, shout-out to Joy.
13:30Sweet as can be.
13:30She remembered me from coming on years and years ago when they had a show on the other station that no longer exists.
13:36So we talked to her.
13:36I got to meet a Bella Danger, who my wife had no earthly idea who she was, and I was way too excited to run up and hug a Bella Danger.
13:45Prouder knows who she is.
13:47Jimmy lit up.
13:48I saw Jimmy light up.
13:51But I think hard rock bet is the best.
13:54I put my money in, and I got $150 in free plays.
13:58And at Joy's party, I guess, the more Tito's and Red Bull I drank, the more times I hit Miami money line on one of those free plays.
14:05I won some money on LSU because I drunkenly bet on my wife's team.
14:09It was great Sunday to look and go, oh, about half my trip was just paid for right here.
14:14It made it all worth it.
14:15It was an awesome weekend.
14:17Canes fans should be super proud of the way they reacted this week.
14:20We look like a top-10 team again.
14:23And I challenge you guys, don't just show up for Notre Dame.
14:28Louisville's coming.
14:29South Florida in two weeks.
14:30Bethune this week.
14:32Go support these kids and support this program.
14:35They deserve it.
14:36They're a legitimate national title contender.
14:39And if you act like it and you show up every week, we got eight home games.
14:42We'll be 8-0 at home.
14:44We're going to be in the college football playoff.
14:46John Michaels, 680, the fan in Atlanta.
14:49Follow him on Twitter.
14:50John Michaels, you.
14:52John Michaels, the letter U.
14:53Thank you, John.
14:54All right, guys.
