01:01interceptions leader all-time pick six
01:03leader wait I hate to say this what for
01:05now yeah for now because we've got a
01:08couple of no I know I know we're gonna
01:09talk to him about yeah I know and I'm
01:11gonna get to I don't know how he feels
01:12because he wants to see the team do well
01:14but my gosh you know I throw last year
01:16and it's uh it's gonna keep going here
01:18for a while but it's JJ we played here
01:20for nine years played here for nine years
01:24so we're gonna talk to JJ about that now a
01:25few things about this show we haven't been
01:27out live in a long time during the season
01:30we've been live in the offseason a few
01:32times but here we are right next to the
01:34team shop which is open till seven like I
01:35said we are giving away opening night
01:38tickets the home opener not the Rams game
01:40we're giving away Tampa Bay Bucs tickets
01:42September 15th we need the Liberty white
01:44out Liberty white out and I know I know
01:49I'm speaking to the converted here that
01:51they're all going to be wearing Liberty
01:52white for that JJ was wearing Liberty
01:54white tonight just to get in the mood
01:55yeah I mean it's after Labor Day that
01:57supposed to wear white after Labor Day
01:58apparently but Liberty white is acceptable
02:00we make exceptions yes and we're going to
02:03give away sideline passes tonight as well
02:06yes yes and numerous other things along
02:11the way so during the breaks we'll do that
02:12to the crowd here must be present to win
02:14so sorry listeners but this also leads
02:17into what I'm going to tell you next
02:18which is we'll be back here next week
02:20live and guess who our guest is this is
02:23unbelievable unprecedented Texans radio
02:26live with Nick Casario right here Texans
02:30executive vice president and general
02:32manager and Nick is going to sing and
02:35dance no he's not he is going to answer
02:37questions about football and sign a few
02:39things we don't have time to have Nick
02:41sign everything out there but we'll
02:42probably do it like a signing lottery
02:44who's been with us since we had I mean
02:46back in the day we had the Arian Foster
02:48show so yeah we got hands here yes we
02:51used to do a 23 person lottery to win
02:54tickets to get Arian to sign something
02:57because otherwise we would have been
02:58there all night with Arian signing stuff
03:00so it all worked out I'm sure Arian wanted
03:02to be there all night too and I don't
03:03know what Nick's number was in college at
03:05John Carroll but it was 18 or was eight
03:08no it was 18 high school because we
03:09saw that as old school I think we'll
03:11cap it at around 10 or something but we
03:13have to get Nick to agree to this
03:14anyway thank you so much for being here
03:16everybody it's awesome to see you and
03:18it's awesome to see Jonathan Joseph yes
03:20on opening week J. Joe I mean you look
03:22like you're still playing I mean is
03:24current player Jonathan Joseph here
03:26how many snaps could you go how many
03:30snaps could you go tomorrow against
03:32Puka Nakua oh tomorrow I can give you
03:34the minute you need with that pass rush
03:35we have that's yeah that is a good
03:38point yeah that helps out considerably
03:40does it not oh this is a game changer
03:42you know obviously I was best to play
03:44with J.J. Watt Whitney Mercer and those
03:46guys so anytime you have a pass rush you
03:48know the ball got to come out quick
03:49gives the defensive coordinator more
03:51confidence in giving calls to where you
03:53know the guys in the back end can hold
03:54up yes I don't mean this in the I don't
03:57mean this in the way it's going to come
03:58out but how much does that allow you to
04:00cheat a little bit oh it's everything
04:03because if I don't have a pass rush like
04:05I'm almost you know telling the
04:07defensive coordinator we got to go to a
04:08different game plan yeah because the
04:10quarterbacks are so good in this league
04:11and offensive coordinators you up against
04:13so much so to have those pass rushes it
04:15just feeds the process over the offense
04:16so much and kind of swings it back into
04:18your favor yep yeah because you'll get
04:20some bad passes thrown you can
04:22capitalize on those but one thing I want
04:25to get into and we can expand on this
04:26later is and a lot of you know this
04:29about J. Joe some of you might not but
04:31you were really a coach on the field for
04:33these guys for your defensive teammates
04:37and also for the offense I mean I
04:38remember interviewing DeAndre Hopkins
04:40and he said well I'd ask Jonathan
04:42Joseph what I should be doing here and
04:43the guys coaching each other that makes
04:45the team so much stronger I think so I
04:48think when I came first got here I was
04:51obviously one of the older guys on the
04:52team and then I grew into their role
04:54even more when Bill O'Brien came here
04:56he kind of forced players on the
04:57defensive side to learn what the
04:59offense was doing and vice versa and it
05:01helped me even more just because I knew
05:03exactly what an offensive player had to
05:04do or he wouldn't get in the ball and
05:06that all what matters to me like if you
05:07don't do this you're not getting the
05:09ball so some guys would think they
05:10would be open at times in practice but
05:12if they don't cross my face or get to
05:14the next spot it doesn't even matter so
05:15that's how I look at it from a
05:17defensive standpoint to help the
05:18offensive guys you have to do this or it
05:20doesn't matter or you got to be quick
05:21or you got to get to this spot because I
05:23know all the weaknesses on our side
05:25and you face two guys in DeAndre Hopkins
05:27and Andre Johnson every day in
05:29practice two different great receivers
05:32how much I want to say how much fun that
05:35was going against those two guys or
05:36probably the guys you wanted to
05:37dominate and didn't want to see those
05:38guys on certain days but how did those
05:40two guys individually make you better
05:42Jonathan oh man Andre obviously hall of
05:44famer hop on that same trajectory you
05:46know different skill set but at the same
05:48time every time they line up across you
05:50you know the ball is probably coming
05:52their way and it's a fight and it's a
05:53challenge I think you know I praise
05:55Andre for getting here when I got here
05:56keeping me sharp having a chance to go
05:58against him each and every day and then
06:00also we drafted DeAndre Hopkins which you
06:02know I had to face a younger guy which
06:04kept me I think helped my longevity out
06:06bringing in a guy like Will Fuller you
06:08know that also had tremendous speed so
06:10just going against guys like that and the
06:12mentality that those guys have is a
06:14different mentality because if you don't
06:15think you're the best or if you don't
06:16think that I'm open every play or throw
06:18me the ball when three guys on me not
06:20one of the top wide receivers in this
06:21league there were so many great wide
06:22receivers in this league and I don't
06:24know that Will ever got to what we
06:26thought his potential could be but he
06:28had a different kind of speed like there
06:30was such an easy smooth speed and you
06:32realize this dude's running past me and
06:35it doesn't even feel like it he's going
06:36by everybody how tough was that with a
06:39guy with you had speed too but his
06:41speed was just a different level will
06:43was scary scary scary will was a special
06:45talent obviously had injuries and
06:48things but I just remember that one
06:49year you had when he was here and he
06:51was just running by everybody and I
06:52remember the next year when I went to
06:54Tennessee and I would not call those
06:55guys individual names out but when I
06:57got to Tennessee nobody wanted to play
06:58I ended up being the third
07:00cornerback when we played the Texans I
07:01was a starter all of a sudden because
07:03nobody wanted to go against Will Fuller
07:04in that game and he went for like 150
07:06yards in the first quarter yeah J. Joe
07:08let's talk about Derek Stingley Jr. and
07:11his progression obviously drafted very
07:15high by this team really great in
07:17college initially kind of had some
07:19injury issues and other things but
07:21didn't hurt his draft status and now
07:23here he is all pro coming off a dynamic
07:262024 season what do you see in him and
07:29what makes him so good I think the
07:31pedigree first and foremost obviously his
07:34dad been around him training him ever
07:35since he's been young he's been a top
07:37player coming out of high school five
07:38star recruit going to LSU you know
07:41falling in the footsteps of Patrick
07:43Peters and Tyron Matthew you just go
07:44down the list all the corner and
07:45defensive backs that came out of that
07:46school and then I think his own work
07:48ethic and his own determination like
07:51you said having some injuries and
07:52bouncing back from that but being able
07:54to face the pressure you know it's
07:55easy to come out of nowhere and have
07:57and get lucky sometimes but he's always
07:58been the guy ever since he's been
08:00probably 15 years old so it takes a
08:02lot to walk around that chip on your
08:03shoulder and for me to see it and I
08:06talked to him last year right before
08:07training camp and his pops and I remember
08:09my third year when I was in Cincinnati
08:11and how I kind of took off for me and the
08:13game slowed down and you seen you had
08:14last year and now and I just look at
08:16every video is just it almost looks
08:18comical because the game slowed down so
08:20much it looks like he's not even trying
08:21hard right because he yeah the movements
08:24seem slow but he's always there he's
08:26always there exactly and I remember at
08:28times in practice when I was up there
08:30and the guys would always when they
08:31started doing the catapults and
08:32putting how fast guys run they would
08:34always come and be like you never win
08:36over 16 miles per hour but I'm like
08:37why would I run fast if I'm not beat
08:39or if I'm in position most guys that
08:40have to run at 22 miles per hour
08:42they're beat they chasing for their
08:44life right Joe one of the things I
08:46realized last year I mean I knew it
08:48about Stingley before that but he's his
08:50football IQs off the charts that was
08:52something that we always we talked
08:53about a little bit you know earlier like
08:55guys wanted to know what you thought I
08:57mean I'll never forget what DeAndre
08:58sat across from us was like yeah I see
09:00J.J.O. out when I come to the
09:01sideline we looked at him like what you
09:03don't go to offensive coach and you go
09:04no I go to J. Joe he's the one who
09:06knows it but his football IQ really
09:08flourished and I asked him about the
09:10interception against Miami he's
09:11covering Tyreek and he talked about on
09:14the interception he went two plays
09:16prior and he talked about how Tyreek had
09:18a different release and he kind of
09:20clocked it so that when Tyreek had a
09:22different release on the play they
09:23actually intercepted it he kind of put it
09:25all together it was like his football
09:26IQ is off the charts how important is
09:29that he's multi-talented but how
09:31important is that part of the game that
09:33upstairs you're pretty sharp and he's
09:34pretty sharp as you were because it's a
09:37game within the game when you're out
09:38there as a wide receiver like every
09:40player is not going to be a pass play
09:41every play you're not going to be
09:42involved so there's a lot of times when
09:43people don't see what's really going on
09:45is when a wide receiver during a run
09:47play is giving us a release yeah and
09:49most times they actually really get us
09:51because they can mess around and do
09:52more because it's not a real pass play
09:53right but all they trying to do is see
09:55what they can actually do when it's that
09:56time right so us as defenders we have to
09:59remember that we have to remember
10:00formations we have to remember certain
10:02things when we were beat or a position
10:04we was in yeah because they're probably
10:05going to come back to it because it's
10:07the eye in the sky also that helps
10:09everybody out the guys looking from the
10:10press box okay so I asked Derek that
10:13day on radio I said hey take me through
10:15that interception how did you make the
10:16interception what was it that you saw
10:18so same challenge to you Buffalo Bills in
10:21this building 2018 fourth quarter you pick
10:25and take it to the house tell us take us
10:28through how that happened this I had a
10:31similar play like that in college yeah I
10:33just remember like you said it's kind of
10:35like before that it was a obviously two
10:37minute you know and fourth quarter
10:38trying to come back in the game so
10:39offenses are limited they don't have
10:41their whole playbook understand clock
10:43situation awareness what they got to
10:44do whether they got to get out of
10:45bounds where they have timeouts to burn
10:47and if you look at the interception you
10:48remember Tyron Matthews knew also yeah he
10:51came from the far field and tried to get
10:52my interception he should not been
10:54there right but we both was thinking
10:56the same thing because we seen a
10:57younger guy in there and he's seen it
10:58was open but he went the other way
10:59and most times coaches just go but
11:02they say Xerox just you know run the
11:03same thing run it again and I already
11:05had an idea on it and we had a soft
11:07cover to coverage but I wanted to make
11:09look like four so if you go back and
11:11look I actually was just acting like I
11:12was moving the engine but I wasn't
11:14going anywhere and the quarterback from
11:15that distance they can't really tell
11:17rumor has it that you in the huddle
11:18said I'm gonna go get this thing you
11:20said that in the huddle we had like
11:23call when you have that call like yeah
11:24when it's controlling up for you and it's
11:26kind of the right thing you almost feel
11:28so bad for your teammates when you don't
11:29make a play like that because the coach
11:31had the right blitz on the right call
11:32everybody just has to do their job and my
11:34job was you know to read it right and
11:35break on the throw and finish it off
11:37Jonathan Joseph with us what else do you
11:40see in this defense what would it be
11:42like for you to play in this defense and
11:44you were a teammate for a year here with
11:46D'Amico Ryans now he's the head coach and
11:49he's got his fingerprints obviously all
11:50over this thing what do you see when
11:52you see the Texans defense take the field
11:55and play I see a brotherhood that's the
11:57first thing I see first and foremost
11:58because a lot of times you have so many
12:01good guys on the defense on a team in
12:02general guys start to separate because
12:04guys worried about am I going to get
12:06paid am I going to get recognition am I
12:07going to get pro bowl and this and that
12:09you don't see that with none of the guys
12:10on this team at all even when I see
12:12these guys outside of football they're
12:13always together they hang together they do
12:15everything together I can almost be 100%
12:18certain if I see one guy I'm probably
12:20gonna see the other guy or this guy and
12:22it's always been like that so when I see
12:24it on the field when guys make plays it
12:26is even more because they plan for each
12:27other even it's the backups you look in
12:29the preseason when the backups and the
12:31starters are not playing when the guy
12:33makes a play everybody on the sideline
12:34runs out and celebrating those guys you
12:36don't see that around the league so it's
12:37the culture that he's created here from
12:39team and brotherhood but also
12:41everybody has to keep the standard how
12:44much does a trip to the Greenbrier a
12:47trip to Richmond the greatest line ever
12:49in Hard Knocks history it's the very last
12:51line of that first show it was
12:53tremendous but what are those you know
12:54what he's talking about of course I can't
12:58say it on air but you should have a
13:00bumper sticker on your car that everybody
13:01let's just say everybody wanted to get
13:02out of Richmond really really fast but
13:05what are those those trips in those
13:08opportunities when you have joint
13:09practice and you get away it's just a
13:10team it's just a staff it's just you
13:12guys out on your own families are back
13:15here but it's just those guys you did
13:17that I know you guys went to the Greenbrier
13:18with the Richmond this team went to
13:20Detroit went to the Greenbrier as well
13:22what does that do to foster the
13:23camaraderie amongst the team it bring
13:25guys closer together because you're
13:26forced to you know spend time with your
13:29teammates you're forced to do things
13:30that you probably naturally wouldn't do
13:31if you're in a hotel at home or things
13:34like that because I've done the same
13:35thing when I was in Cincinnati we went to
13:36like a college and had training camp
13:38elsewhere but being in Greenbrier where
13:39you can actually do hunting you can do
13:41all these different activities and
13:42spend time together I think so that's
13:44some of my fond memories because now I
13:46look at it me Brian Cush and Kareem
13:47Jackson a lot of us we have group chats
13:49and a lot of pictures that circulate
13:51back through that group chat is from the
13:52Greenbrier where we spending time at
13:54were you taking pictures of Shane
13:55Leckler and Kaimi out fishing while
13:57they should have been at practice yeah but
13:58I when I got out there they know who's
14:00the top fisher though oh they didn't
14:02know I had it in me okay but Leck is
14:04Leck can legitimately Leck is an
14:06outdoorsman but I was right there from
14:07clay shooting to whatever it was I think
14:09Leck was there for the first 10 minutes
14:11of practice and he was in the water
14:12after that I'm pretty sure Kaimi
14:14confirmed that this past the one who
14:15was upset was Cush because you know
14:17he's a Jersey boy but he want to be
14:18outdoorsman at the same time so he's
14:21got to go through practice and Leck
14:23was out there he wasn't winning
14:24everything out there he was upset well
14:27the second year you were there you
14:29went on a nine-game winning streak at
14:31some point during the season after the
14:32week three game started a nine-game
14:34binge that's the longest winning
14:36streak still in the history of the
14:38franchise when you're on one of those
14:40roles and we want this team to get on a
14:41role like that what is it like you don't
14:44know if it's going to keep going or end
14:47or whatever but what does that do for
14:48the team how do you get on a role like
14:50that J. Joe it's funny as it sounds it's a
14:53simple message just want to know yeah
14:55because you can't look too far and
14:56looking like oh well we have I'm just
14:58saying I'm just throwing it out there
14:59but it's the draft we have it the
15:01Carolina Panthers next week yeah like
15:03we you can't just mark that off
15:04because it's still the NFL so you have to
15:06show up every week you can't lose that
15:07focus I think like it all goes back to
15:09the top where that same message has been
15:11each and every day whether it's the
15:12practice field whatever you're doing
15:14around the building because they just
15:15want to spread and be contagious so
15:17when you let little things seek in it
15:19show up in the game and you got to look
15:20at yourself in the mirror and have some
15:22self-correction so it's really hard you
15:24know I always remember and I want to
15:25bring it up when we had that bad losing
15:27streak here we always talked as
15:29teammates is it harder to go on a 14
15:31losing streak or win 14 games in a row
15:33and we all agree we think it's harder
15:35to lose 14 yeah and win 14 yeah
15:37especially the talent exactly but it was
15:40just like everything that could go wrong
15:41went wrong you know it was everything
15:43you go wrong okay do you remember your
15:47first interception of your career do you
15:49remember your last interception of your
15:51career first for sure New York Jets
15:56Chad Pennington 55 yard interception
16:01return or 52 at home in Cincinnati do you

16:09interception with every team so it had to
16:10be in Arizona okay okay every team I
16:14played for so yeah it was in Arizona it was
16:17in Arizona boy that was heartbreaking you
16:20going to Arizona no okay never mind I'm not
16:23going to get upset let me tell you what's
16:24heartbreaking not getting upset to be in

16:28across and he's wearing a Titans jersey
16:30look I know business is business like I
16:32understand that it's actually backwards
16:33though I was supposed to sign with
16:35Arizona first right but Arizona didn't
16:37really want to give me any money yeah so I
16:39went to Tennessee and then went to
16:41Arizona yeah with rapes yeah I went with
16:43rape where I was kind of comfortable for
16:45the most part but I don't think it was a
16:46good fit for me yeah yeah it just was
16:48there there are players that you look at
16:50and you go that doesn't look right like I
16:52saw your career like in a Cincinnati
16:54jersey that didn't even look right it's
16:55like just I get so used to seeing you in
16:57a Texans jersey like that one looks right
16:59Andre Johnson in a Colts jersey I am
17:02still recovering okay I still need
