00:00OTAs up and going, day two of OTAs, and we are happy to be joined by somebody who was
00:07out there.
00:07You catch him every morning from 6 to 10 on Payne and Pendergast.
00:11Seth Payne is in the building.
00:13Again, man, I missed it.
00:15I missed, we were about this break, I missed the tail, I came on the tail end of the story.
00:19My kids, my kids were cracking up.
00:22They were like.
00:22Yeah, we said you'd be the most likely to defend to the death the bank you worked at.
00:26If somebody came up to the bank teller and says, I've got a gun, and he's holding it,
00:31but he's holding it in the pocket of his jacket, and you don't know, is it just a finger pistol
00:36or an actual gun?
00:37We felt like Ron would be the most likely.
00:40Even if you hated the bank you worked at, just on principle, you'd be like, no, no, it's
00:45not happening.
00:45Do you agree with it?
00:47Not one bit.
00:48Really, I misread it.
00:49I believe Ron would, he'd hand that money over so quick.
00:54What'd you need?
00:56We said that you would take seven bullets, but you'd still have the satchel of money
01:01clutched to your chest.
01:02Hey, Bart, you don't even need to pull that out, man.
01:04What do you need?
01:05I got you.
01:05What do you need, man?
01:06I don't care if it's real or not.
01:07I'll help you carry it to your car.
01:08Yeah, whatever.
01:10What if we talk at 10% cut hair?
01:12Hey, I promise you.
01:13Let's make this an inside job right quick.
01:14I got the code on the safe, boys.
01:15You see my hands.
01:17I ain't pressed nothing on this.
01:18Hey, I might think twice if it's my own money.
01:23Yeah, if it's his bank account and his bank account only.
01:26I might think twice.
01:27No, man.
01:30Clint would do the quarterback thing, which is like make the smart decision.
01:34You know, I feel like you'd want to fight, but you'd just be like, oh, no.
01:39I got to care about the team.
01:41I say Clint would be more liable to fight.
01:43Yeah.
01:43Well, yeah, if I was forced to, I would try the, man, you're ruining your life here, man.
01:52Oh, yeah, that's a good one.
01:53I mean, look, man, right now you're all right.
01:55Right now you can walk out of here.
01:56You're fixing to ruin your life, man.
01:58Sometimes I used to do that with the people that would call us phone scammers.
02:03I really would be like when I could tell they're like from some, you know, I like I could tell
02:07they're operating out of some country elsewhere or something.
02:11I'd be like, yeah, do you really feel good about this?
02:13Like, you know, you don't.
02:14Do you have other options?
02:15I don't know what your conditions are.
02:16I can appreciate why you might have to do this, but I'm guessing you don't feel good about this.
02:20You've ruined my day.
02:21Yeah.
02:22Nicholas said, now, Dad, you robbed a bank?
02:24I said, no, no, no, no.
02:25They're just.
02:27Lawrence said, they're just acting.
02:29Oh, man.
02:29I'll tell you what.
02:29They're just acting.
02:30I told a story once about a teammate of mine who had been pulled over and like in
02:35under in bad circumstances, like he was and he got he got it was not a it was not a
02:40good
02:40deal.
02:40He actually ended up like the policeman that pulled him over ended up getting reprimanded
02:45for it or something.
02:46But I was talking about it because it was, you know, in the story, my old teammate and
02:49I'm not going to say his name and I'll tell you why.
02:52I I was talking about it and in the story, he ends up being just fine.
02:56You know, like he's completely cleared of any wrongdoing and everything.
03:00But but his kid was listening.
03:03That teammate still lives in Houston.
03:04His kid was listening at the time and thought that his dad had been arrested, like didn't
03:09know.
03:09He was too young.
03:10Yeah.
03:11Yeah.
03:12Yeah.
03:12Yeah.
03:12Yeah.
03:12I thought so.
03:13Yeah.
03:14Like he called.
03:15He went to the teacher called.
03:17The teacher called from school because the kid was just melting down.
03:22Right.
03:22Like he didn't know what it had.
03:24He had.
03:24He just didn't get the whole deal.
03:26Yeah.
03:27Never knows.
03:28Never know who is.
03:29All right.
03:29Seth Payne.
03:30No, you don't have to tell.
03:32I just wanted to start on that sad note.
03:34Maybe you tell us.
03:36The story about another former teammate, D'Amico Ryans.
03:40It was D'Amico.
03:42I knew it.
03:44It was D'Amico.
03:46There it is.
03:47You came that quick.
03:49He got arrested for he got arrested for for assaulting a little league football coach.
03:53They tried to cover up before they hired D'Amico.
03:56Let me tell you.
03:58The defensive coordinators.
03:59He was verbally assaulting a little league coach.
04:02But one of the things I love to look at on the first days, the first days of training camp
04:09or OTAs is just the kind of level of what type of team that the team is.
04:17So this is year four in their system.
04:19They've been to three straight postseasons, one playoff games.
04:22What's the vibe?
04:24Because almost everybody was there.
04:26Yeah.
04:26What's the vibe of how the team operates and feels?
04:30I know.
04:30Yeah.
04:30That's an interesting way to look at it.
04:32I'm glad you asked that way because I hadn't thought about it that way.
04:34I guess the most notable thing would be that there didn't seem to be anything notable.
04:39Like in terms of, all right.
04:41And it's been like this since D'Amico's been here.
04:43But if I just kind of sit back and think about, okay, how's everything functioning?
04:47Guys moving from drill to drill?
04:49How are guys operating within the drills and coaching?
04:51Yeah.
04:51It looks like a better run football team.
04:54Sometimes, I mean, because you could, sometimes you have combined practices with teams and
04:58you can just tell like, wow, whoa, this, this, they don't, they don't know what's going
05:04on over here.
05:05It's the opposite with the Texans.
05:06I think if you think about it from the offense's perspective with, with no pads on, it's really
05:11hard to tell, obviously.
05:13I thought it, maybe I'm just at this point, but I think we've got a chance to see a more
05:18competitive training camp.
05:20I just, it looks like, you know, CJ's connections with Dalton Schultz versus really tough coverage
05:26out there on defense.
05:27That was good today.
05:28You know, Jalen Petrie got a pick.
05:29That was like probably, that was the only bad play I saw CJ make myself.
05:34The other negatives would be a couple of times where CJ had to pull it down and run when
05:38they were in full team.
05:39But again, all right, they're not in pads.
05:41What was, what was the action?
05:43I mean, Will, Will Anderson is out there operating.
05:46Like he's an undrafted rookie free agent and in the coach, it, if somebody, if I didn't
05:52know anything about the Texans and somebody went up to me and they were like, Hey, Hey,
05:55they told one of the defensive linemen that he's going to be cut today.
05:58If he doesn't make a play, I'd be like, yo, it's that guy.
06:02Cause that guy's out of his mind.
06:05Yeah.
06:05And it's kind of, it's cool to see though.
06:07Cause it kind of reminds me of all those stories of other, other athletes who have led their
06:10team.
06:11And you hear stories about how maniacal they are in practice and everything.
06:13That's just, that's who Will Henderson is.
06:15Well, there's just, there's something about it.
06:17You know, the saying that the, the, the most powerful thing is when your best players are
06:21your biggest leaders.
06:22I mean, and he is clearly that, I mean, that, that is, that is extremely powerful, but what
06:26about Seth being out there with this new offensive line?
06:31You know, I, I saw, I've heard some people kind of some rumblings about that they look
06:35different.
06:35They, what kind of vibes do you get from, from that, all the newness there?
06:39I would say, and I only, I didn't notice this until I think Cody Stutes said it, was it
06:43just, they do look beefier.
06:45It just looks like a more physically imposing offensive line, except for Blake Fisher.
06:49Like Blake, Blake Fisher looks like a bulked up tight end.
06:52Um, and I said that last year and then we, he put six offensive linemen, Seth.
06:58Yeah.
06:58I don't know that his role isn't to become more of that instead of a tackle.
07:03Oh, that's interesting.
07:03Cause I didn't, I, it was, it was kind of jarring to me and maybe it's just cause I haven't
07:07seen him in a while.
07:09Um, and maybe it's because, maybe it's because the rest of the offensive line now is that
07:13much more physically imposing, but that kind of jumped out at me cause I was surprised
07:17to see him playing at right tackle.
07:18But you know, Braden Smith had, I believe he had an off season procedure of some sort.
07:22So they're probably come bringing him along slowly.
07:24And, uh, you know, Trent Brown is, he's just, he's in his thirties anyways, 370 pounds.
07:29Yeah.
07:30Like they were out there in drills and everything, but I didn't see him in team at all.
07:34But I would think they're just more physically imposing.
07:37It looked like there was more beef.
07:39And then there was another time when I was looking at the D line drills and I was trying
07:43to figure out if we'll, and this is when I first got out there and I don't know if
07:46Will Anderson was even out there and it, cause there was a group of defensive tackles that
07:51were going through some pass rush drills.
07:54And, and, uh, the Sarge, I think told me like, no, he's right there.
07:57And I looked at him and it was, Will Anderson is in this drill where it's nothing but defensive
08:02tackles and Will Anderson and he was kind of hidden, you know, cause he's relatively
08:06slender by, uh, by, so a Will Anderson again, like, I don't know, like helping out the young
08:12guys or something going through that drill, even though they're defensive tackles.
08:15But the, when you look at like Naquan Jones and then obviously with Caden McDonald, I do
08:20think there's, you know, I think there's, they're definitely wanting to have some more
08:25options or bulk on the defensive line by virtue of drafting Caden McDonald and maybe Naquan
08:31Jones has a spot that yet maybe there is a little bit more on the defensive side of
08:37the ball as well as, you know, we know on the offensive side of the ball, they want to
08:39be more physically imposing in the run game.
08:41And I think there's a, there's a little bit of that on defense where like, Hey, we got
08:44to tweak this thing a little bit.
08:45Like we got to be ready for all, all situations, all types of teams, cold weather, all of that.
08:51What is, what was your first impressions of seeing Caden McDonald in person?
08:54Is that, what's your take on him and of when we, when to see, like, is he an immediate
08:58guy that can, can contribute or do you think it's going to take, I think that, you know,
09:01I watched, I, I didn't watch as much of the defensive line today.
09:04When I did, I was pleased with some of the things with a big guy like that.
09:08Um, like when you're lined up in a three technique, when you're, you're out over the outside shade
09:13of the guard, you know, as opposed to being right on, right on the center, when you're a
09:16nose tackle, sometimes it's tougher for the bigger guys to stay in their spots against zone
09:22runs, uh, because when, when, yeah, when offensive linemen are just turning and running laterally,
09:27he did a good job of that on the snaps that I watched.
09:30Um, like in terms of size, strength technique, all of that, I think he looks like a really
09:35promising rookie.
09:36It's just, it's hard because his, his calling card is going to be his strength and power.
09:39And you just, you can't see that much out of that without, without pads on.
09:42Yeah.
09:43Seth Payne with us, who was out at OTAs today, as you said, it's hard to see the guys up
09:48front,
09:49the pads and stuff.
09:50You guys up?
09:50Oh no, no, no.
09:52Go ahead.
09:52It's hard to see that the guys up front pads and things like that, but the guys on the
09:57outside and those two young receivers they drafted last year and Noel and Higgins seem
10:04to be impressed.
10:05D'Amico said that, that Higgins looks bigger, faster.
10:08It looks like there's going to be a bigger role for Noel.
10:10Maybe you can't see the pads popping with the bigs, but Kamari Lasseter, uh, and Eric Stingley
10:17out there with those young guys.
10:19What'd you see from the receivers who it feels like are going to have to step up alongside
10:24with Nico Thomas?
10:24I watched Jalen Noel, I thought was moving really well.
10:27And that's something everyone thought and would see during, during camp and last year
10:33all the time during practice.
10:34Yeah.
10:34Yeah.
10:35Yeah.
10:35Like it's not necessarily a revelation or anything.
10:37He was already rocked up.
10:39You know, he's a muscular dude for being a smaller guy, but I, I don't, I'd have to, I'd have
10:45to
10:45check my comps with other guys out there.
10:47It looked like he might even be a little bit more muscular.
10:49Um, but I, I think the, when it comes to the receivers and the tight ends, the tight ends
10:55are the one that jumped out at me just because, you know, you talk about the offensive line
10:59being bigger and more physical.
11:00I feel like, like Foster Moreau is a solid dude.
11:04And then you look at Marlon Klein and he's, he's a big kid.
11:08He doesn't have like a really imposing physique or anything, but you can see the frame and the
11:13size and what they might think of him, where he could develop into a guy that I mean, but
11:18he also, um, like he doesn't move with electric athleticism or anything, but he's a, he's a
11:23really rangy guy.
11:24So like with his length, I think that combo and what they might envision of him becoming
11:29if he can be a good blocker.
11:31And then just by virtue of just having all that length, what they could do with him as
11:34a receiver, um, I'm, I'm really intrigued by him, you know, and it's cause he's perceived
11:38as such a reach and I saw, I could kind of see it in person, what they're thinking with
11:43him, but I just, there wasn't anything.
11:45And it's, it's one day of OTAs.
11:47There wasn't anything that necessarily where I, it jumped out at me.
11:50It was like, Oh yeah.
11:51Oh, I get it now.
11:52So it's going to be, you know, he'll be somebody to just watch and monitor and see how he progresses.
11:57I mentioned about his frame though.
11:58I mean, I correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he's sitting at, they listed at two 50.
12:01Yeah.
12:02Um, yeah.
12:02It was like every single tight end was six, six, two 50.
12:05Yeah.
12:05But, but it looked, you know, he, he looked to your point.
12:07He looks like, even if you don't stack on a bunch of weight, if you just change the body
12:11comp, you add 10 pounds that he can carry two 60 easy.
12:14Yeah.
12:14He looked, you know what he looked to me like?
12:16He looked like a, an offensive lineman who had lost a lot of weight after he retired.
12:20So that's a, well, you can take that as a, I take that as a positive.
12:23I feel like almost like he's got, I think he's got to put on a little, uh, he's got to
12:28change his body composition a little bit, but you can see that the frame is the, he's
12:32got a really big frame.
12:34Well, that you can argue.
12:35That's exactly what this offense needs.
12:37It's given what they want to do and your, your highly paid guys, Dalton Schultz, who,
12:41who is a much more willing blocker now than he was a year ago.
12:44Yeah.
12:45The, the, the old offensive lineman, it's lost a little bit of weight.
12:48They can put his hand in dirt in the line of scrimmage, whether it's Blake Fisher or
12:52a kid like this, that's exactly what you can argue.
12:54That's exactly what they need.
12:55Yeah.
12:56I don't know.
12:57I'm intrigued by your thought about Blake Fisher.
12:59They're turning him into like a versatile, it's a rare move from tackle to.
13:04Well, I mean, he's already, he's already a tweener, right?
13:07The tackle, the tackle, the tackle numbers are not adding up in his favor.
13:11In his favor.
13:11Yeah.
13:11So just being a gadget player of some sort.
13:14If, if they don't have, you think about it, they, they ran that sixth offensive line
13:17more than anybody in the league last year.
13:18And he was the guy that did that predominantly.
13:20And then you look at, at really what they want to do, obviously is run the football.
13:23And then do they really have a tight end that they trust they can put the hand in the
13:27dirt and get movement, get the corner.
13:28Do you really have that guy?
13:29I mean, Marlon Klein, maybe Foster Moreau, maybe, I don't know.
13:33No, but if not, I mean, in that category, you know.
13:37Oh, and then the linebackers, Wade Woodhaz was out there a bunch with the twos.
13:41So for a fifth round pick, I was, and I don't know what they did yesterday and who got the
13:45reps divvied up and everything.
13:46But that, Marte Mapu, I'm intrigued by him.
13:50The guy from New England?
13:50Yeah, they traded from New England.
13:52Because, you know, in New England, they, I just, judging, I like to, I like to listen to
13:57the fan base of a team when you get, get a guy that maybe hasn't played a whole bunch.
14:03And it seems like he was that guy that a lot of people in New England kept thinking,
14:07all right, boy, this is the, Marte Mapu might really click this year.
14:10And I can see, just from watching him on defense in the last couple years, I can see what D
14:15'Amico
14:15sees in him.
14:16And you hope that maybe he gets a little bit of that, that D'Amico glow up that linebackers
14:22in the past have gotten from him.
14:23Because I think athletically, he's the guy that I would look at and think is, should
14:28be most likely, unless it's one of the rookies, but amongst the veterans, he should be, he
14:33looks like he's most suited to fill in for EJ Speed.
14:36All right.
14:37Seth Payne, you can catch him every single morning, 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. right here on Sports
14:43Radio 610.
14:44Payne and Pendergast will be there bright and early tomorrow.
14:47So wake up with him and you'll get more of his thoughts.
14:50I'm going to go rob a bank.
14:51From OTA.
14:52He's going to rob a bank, gunless.
