00:00Alright, welcome back into The Drive as we are in full effect right here as Clint Sterner's
00:09in the building, Tyler Milner is in the building, and he is back from vacation, full beard.
00:16The Drive is live.
00:19Out there on the West Coast.
00:20Did you ever get used to the time change?
00:23Yeah, yeah, that didn't bother me or affect me too much.
00:27I kind of like it.
00:28There is something like everything is done at like 6 or 7, and then you can kind of roll
00:39on and do your stuff.
00:42I kind of like it a little bit.
00:44Yeah, I guess I did too.
00:45It was a little weird to look up when I was at dinner the last night we were over there
00:49in California and see the time it was and that the NBA playoffs were going on.
00:55I kind of had to do a double take.
00:56Like, hmm, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's not bad, it's not bad, but welcome
01:01back.
01:02He is back in the building with us from the text line.
01:06I don't understand how you're so down on Davis Mills, who was more than competent, yet you're
01:12extremely high on shell-shocked CJ Stroud.
01:14I mean, listen, I'm not extremely high on him.
01:20I'm just being honest about this is about trying to win a championship, I would think, and I
01:29just think you are, to me, much more limited with Davis Mills than you are with CJ Stroud.
01:38And, I mean, I think the totality of their careers has shown that.
01:46I mean, I just, I would say Ocho, he had a, he, he was competent.
01:51He came in and played really good backup quarterback ball, pretty good backup quarterback ball.
01:57I would urge you to go look at his numbers from, they may surprise you.
02:03Like, he, he, he didn't go out here and just, and just, you know, light this sucker up.
02:08This wasn't Kurt Warner, you know, where he came in and you just couldn't sit him down.
02:12I just, I just, to me, I think your, your chances to, to win big are much bigger with CJ
02:20Stroud,
02:20especially if CJ Stroud is right than Davis Mills, if Davis Mills is right.
02:26I think he's a good backup.
02:28I just, but, but yeah, I mean, I, yeah, I'm not, I, I don't know.
02:33I feel like that one is an obvious, an obvious one there.
02:36All right, Clint, two guys that I think the Texans and Texans fans hope can be helped make
02:46impact similar to when they were healthy, but it has been, it has been a while since we've
02:52been able to see them on the field.
02:54They are guys that have playmaking ability and have shown to be playmakers at times in
03:01their Texans career, but obviously have been injured the last couple of years.
03:04There's Brevin Jordan and Tank Dale.
03:06Here is the head coach, D'Amico Ryan, speaking on those two and where they are right now as
03:13they start OTAs.
03:15Brevin's out.
03:16He's rolling, doing a great job, back to where he's been, always here, big smile on his
03:20face, excited to practice.
03:21You know, we're, we're easing him back in.
03:23He had a really big play yesterday on a choice route.
03:27He, man, got to the proper depth, broke one of our safeties off and had a really nice play.
03:32So, I mean, it was exciting, right?
03:34To see him just back on the field.
03:35We know how devastating it was for him to go down and to see him back working.
03:40It's very encouraged.
03:41I'm proud of the work that he's put in.
03:43Tank is still working off on the side.
03:45When that time is, you know, set for him to be back, he'll be back out there.
03:49All right, that's an update on Brevin Jordan and Tank Dale.
03:52Brevin Jordan's on the field, Clint, and he is, he is playing and in that tight end room.
03:57And then Tank Dale, they're obviously taking their time with him making progress from that
04:02knee injury he suffered in, in 2024.
04:05So, it looks like, obviously, those two guys are on two different spaces and schedules right now.
04:14But those are two guys, Clint, that could change how this offense feels and looks if they can get back
04:21to where they were.
04:22Yeah, look, I think there's four guys that we don't know of and don't know whether it's because we've just
04:27never seen it.
04:27I think there's four guys that could change the dynamic of this offense if the offensive play caller
04:33and this offensive staff choose to use them in creative ways, in ways that is going to allow them to
04:39get specialty touches
04:41and packages, whether that's in the red zone or between the 20s or in no huddle, whatever it may be.
04:46There's four guys on this offense.
04:48You got Woody Marks, right, and you got Jalen Noel.
04:54Those two are healthy young guys that you're like, okay, we hadn't quite seen them do it yet,
04:59but we think based off of what they did in college and what we saw a little bit in OTAs,
05:03what we see in special teams from one guy, what we saw a little bit last year from Woody Marks.
05:07Like, those two guys can be used in exotic, creative ways and give this offense a boost,
05:13a boost that I think is much needed, right?
05:15The other two are the guys that you just played D'Amico speaking on right there, Brevin Jordan and Tank
05:21Dale.
05:21Now, these guys are both luxuries.
05:23We can't look at these guys and say, yeah, these guys are going to help us this year.
05:26They're both luxuries.
05:28I mean, they've been injured multiple times, and they've been injured in, like, brutal, brutal ways.
05:37Like, we literally had to worry about, you know, had to listen to people talk about how distraught guys were
05:43when Brevin Jordan got hurt.
05:44We saw how distraught guys were when Tank Dale got hurt.
05:48These injuries aren't just your run-of-the-mill, yeah, okay, you know, he tore this knee up a little
05:52bit.
05:53These guys had some brutal injuries, and they survive, or they thrive, hopefully, off of twitch and explosion and speed,
06:01right?
06:02So we'll see if these guys get back to who they once were.
06:06Well, to that, they've both had multiple season-ending injuries, right?
06:12Tank had the broken leg before, and Brevin has had the knee problems before.
06:18So this is addition to – this isn't like their first injury, right?
06:22They've had multiple injuries to go along.
06:24As you said, their game is predicated on speed.
06:27Just not only do these guys have to get back healthy and join that four-horse race with Woody Marks
06:33and Noel,
06:34not only do those guys have to all be healthy and available to play,
06:37but the offensive coordinator is going to have to find a way to use them in packages.
06:44They're going to have to find a way to use them throughout a game plan, every game plan, too.
06:49Not this crap of, well, this week this is what we want to do, and next week this –
06:54these guys, they should be a small part, at least a small part, right?
06:58Tank Dale, you can argue, needs to be an outside receiver.
07:01And if Tank Dale is what everybody thinks he is and he's back to who he once was,
07:05then you can move Higgins over there behind Nico and give Nico a little rest from time to time
07:12and kind of load manage him if you want to.
07:13If Tank is back to who people think he is going to be, if he's back to who he once
07:19saw him being.
07:21But these guys, at the very least, are going to –
07:24there's going to have to be a special effort made to get them on the field and get them creative
07:28touches, right?
07:29Are they willing to do it, this offensive staff?
07:32Are they capable and or willing to get that done?
07:35You've got four different guys on this offense that can change the dynamic of this offense
07:40and would change the dynamic of an offense with an offensive coordinator
07:44that you knew had the ability to think, right?
07:48Will that happen in Houston?
07:49That's the key.
07:50I know we're talking about Brevin Jordan, Tank Dale, their health, their back.
07:53I'm excited about both of them being back.
07:54I think they're very, very valuable weapons.
07:56They could be very valuable.
07:57Neither one of those guys.
08:00If you're banking on either one of those guys to be – to have an impact on what this team
08:08is trying to be
08:09and what they are trying to have carry them beyond the second round of the playoffs.
08:15Like, if you think Tank Dale is going to come in here and help them run the football, you're crazy.
08:19If you think Brevin Jordan is going to come in here and help them run the football, you're crazy.
08:24Like, they are hell-bent on – they are all chips in the middle of the table on running the
08:29football.
08:29These guys are luxuries, and there's got to be packages built around them to get them touches.
08:35We'll see if they can get all of the above done in a season if they can stay healthy.
08:41Yeah, and they're going to be ones to watch.
08:43But, again, it is a good sign that Brevin Jordan is already on the field,
08:47and we'll see how long it is with Tank Dale.
08:51Obviously, just to, again, allow you to understand what we're talking about,
08:58why we've been serious about –
09:00boy, it's just hard to even put Tank Dale in the –
09:05well, you got Tank Dale, and he'll do this.
09:07Brevin Jordan's injury was, what, months, months after Tank Dale's head tank.
09:15Like, they're still not ready to put him on the field yet.
09:18Chief, Pat Mahomes is participating in Chiefs OTAs.
09:22Yeah, he is.
09:22I'm not saying he's getting hit.
09:23I'm not saying – but you –
09:26Hill, with his mates.
09:27Elements, he's running –
09:29Tank Dale is still on the side.
09:31Right?
09:32I mean, what are we talking about?
09:33Like, that's – I mean, I hope Tank is back,
09:35and I hope he's part of who he is.
09:36But if I see one more image about the –
09:38well, the rebuild of this offense and the support staff around –
09:43or the supporting group around C.J. Stroud,
09:45and it has the formerly number three, I guess, number one now on there,
09:49I'm going to go crazy.
09:51Yeah, it's just –
09:52it's just, again, to show how serious that injury is
09:56and how much they're taking their time with him.
10:00He is still not ready to go out there,
10:04and they're not hitting either.
10:05They're just running routes.
10:07He's still not ready to go and do that.
10:09All right, you talked about guys to impact this offense.
10:11Somebody they're going to definitely need to impact this offense
10:15is David Montgomery.
10:17And he spoke on NFL Network,
10:20and this is him talking about how he is –
10:23he's excited about the opportunity to be here with the Texans
10:27and excited about what it is that he may be able to do here.
10:32Most excited about kind of the showcase,
10:34like my other abilities elsewhere on the field,
10:36on the side of the ball.
10:37So, you know, Coach Kaley let me know every day.
10:39Hey, like, it's on.
10:40Like, you're here now.
10:41It's time to go.
10:42And, you know, I'm excited for the opportunity
10:43and being able to take full advantage of it
10:45so I can help this team and help us get to the Super Bowl
10:48like we don't do.
10:50There he is.
10:53As he talked about being able to show some of the things
10:56that we haven't really seen that he has the ability to do.
11:00And I just – and I'd like for the people to jump in on this,
11:04as you always do, 713-2416 on the text line, YouTube and Twitch,
11:10you can jump in on this.
11:11What should we expect from David Montgomery Clint?
11:15And that's the thought here.
11:18And we kind of talked a little bit about things the last couple of days
11:21when you think this is a completely different situation.
11:25And the Texans have, what it appears, have upgraded some parts on their offense.
11:31But it is still a completely different situation that he was in
11:37over the last three years in Detroit.
11:40And last year he played all 17 games, had 158 carries.
11:44Obviously he – I wouldn't even say split.
11:47I would think Jameer Gibbs got the majority of the carries.
11:50But he ran for 716 yards, eight touchdowns, 42 a game, 42 yards a game,
11:5724 catches, 192, no touchdowns receiving.
12:00The role, you will think, will be bigger.
12:03But also, last year this was an offense that was fourth in points.
12:07This was an offense that was third in total offense.
12:10Their offensive line was one of the highest rated ones
12:14over the last three years that he has been there.
12:16They had 2,000-yard receivers in St. Brown and Williams.
12:20They had Gibbs, the other back.
12:22They had Sam Laporta, as we talked about.
12:24This is – this was a team that was led by its offense
12:28and led by running the football and passing the football.
12:32Well, everything complemented everything.
12:33You couldn't just focus on one thing.
12:37And his quarterback, you know, threw for a ton of yards as well.
12:40That's different than what's here.
12:42He is coming here, and it would appear –
12:46you're like, no, that's the number one thing you've got to stop.
12:49And it is a thought of what should we expect for him.
12:54What will he actually look like when he comes here in this system with this group?
13:00Yeah, look, what David Montgomery is talking about,
13:04wanting to showcase this or that, no, man.
13:06I just need you.
13:07I figured that way.
13:08I just need David Montgomery to be, you know, the running back that he was in Detroit.
13:14I need you to be the downhill guy between the tackles.
13:17I need you to be the guy to go get the hard yard.
13:19I need you to be the guy that can punish defenses,
13:22and in the fourth quarter they feel that we don't.
13:25That's – you know, I need you to be the alpha leader in that huddle,
13:29similar to what Joe Mixon was when he was here.
13:32Like, I don't think we're going to see all of a sudden some –
13:36you know, how many catches did you say he had, 24 catches?
13:39Yeah.
13:39I don't think all of a sudden we're going to see a back that's got, you know,
13:43four or five catches a game and is real explosive and dynamic in the pass game.
13:47Now, we just need David Montgomery to be the David Montgomery that we all know is in there
13:52and what we've seen before behind this offensive line.
13:54But you're exactly right, Ron.
13:56That is extreme.
13:59You're talking about Ben Johnson, one of the best play callers in the game,
14:02if not the best at this point in time.
14:05Definitely in that conversation, top three.
14:07I would say top three or five.
14:09All the supporting cast that you just mentioned, great offensive line,
14:14and he put up good numbers.
14:16I'm not saying he can or he can't here in Houston.
14:19I'm saying it's going to look different.
14:21It ain't going to be what he's used to.
14:23It's not going to be as well-oiled a machine as it was in Detroit,
14:32especially in his better years.
14:33You mentioned the last three years.
14:35I'd say last year, as you mentioned, his numbers have slipped a little bit.
14:38Two and three years ago, he was special with Gibbs now.
14:41You know, I just – I think it's going to be a little more –
14:44it's going to be a little tougher treading here in Houston than it was in Detroit.
14:48I just wonder where he was on the list in terms of a defense of game plan
14:57all week long.
14:58Like if D'Amico – two years ago when they played the Lions here,
15:04I wonder where he was on the list of when D'Amico and Matt Burke
15:10put together a game plan of, all right, he is somebody like on the list of,
15:15like, in order of, like, he's the guy we've got to stop.
15:18I would think Gibbs was probably up there at number one.
15:22St. Brown, we can't let beat us.
15:24Maybe he was third.
15:26Well, I think it depends on how your defense is built.
15:30But to your point, you know, I think when you're game planning defensively
15:34for the Detroit Lions, I think he's probably fourth or fifth on the list.
15:39Both of the wide receivers and the other running back were one through three.
15:44And then you can argue the tight end who got to be better and better
15:47as he's gone along, Laporta.
15:48Is it Laporta?
15:50Yeah.
15:50He is really, really good.
15:52I think they got significantly easier to defend when David Montgomery was on the field
15:57unless you had a problem with downhill running and physicality
16:01and you couldn't stop that.
16:03Then that's when David Montgomery ate, which is exactly what Houston wants to do.
16:08Yeah, I don't – playmaker, you know, guy that threatens a defense
16:14in an explosive manner, I don't think he's that.
16:17He's definitely your power guy downhill.
16:19Yeah, of course Montgomery – from the text line, of course Montgomery
16:21will have a different role in Houston.
16:23He's expected to save the run game.
16:25In Detroit, he was the backup.
16:31What I would say to that is there's two folds to that, right?
16:36Like now he is the guy that I think because it seems like we have an understanding
16:42of what the Texans want to do, that most teams may come in into it saying,
16:49all right, we got to stop David Montgomery in the run game
16:51even before they would say Nico.
16:53And we believe Nico is the number one weapon they have,
16:57but just because of what it seems like the Texans want to do.
17:01And now he goes from, as you said, being the backup as being the focal point
17:05to the defense that they need to stop with maybe parts around him – not maybe,
17:11with parts around him that, at least right now before the season starts,
17:18aren't up to the level of the parts that were around him that assist you.
17:23Well, I mean, look, there is – I mean, when you're a defender,
17:26when you're Aziz Alshair and you've got to get people in the right position to defend
17:31and you know at any point in time they could roll Gibbs out there
17:33or Montgomery out there and you've got to go, all right,
17:37they're coming downhill in my face or, hey, I may have to chase –
17:40I don't even know if I can touch this cat in the phone booth.
