Miami Hurricanes radio analyst, Don Bailey Jr, joins the show ahead of the Canes - Notre Dame season opener to discuss how the Hurricanes can take down the 6th ranked team in the nation.
00:00Don Bailey, Jr. on the Toyota of Hollywood hotline, the game analyst during Hurricanes football broadcasts, executive produced by Victor Bermudez.
00:11I've heard some of the imaging and audio that they'll be playing on Sunday, and it is fantastic as always.
00:18And DBJ will be alongside Joe Zagacki and Josh Darrow from Hard Rock Stadium.
00:23You can hear the game here on 104.3 FM, WQAM, and DBJ is with us now.
00:31Hello, Don Bailey, Jr.
00:33How are you guys? You doing all right? You ready for another season?
00:37We're excited, man. Are you ready for another season?
00:41Yeah, but I got to get a little something off my chest. Do you mind?
00:44No, please.
00:46Okay. Well, I heard my man Channing was walking around in Notre Dame shirts.
00:53I mean, I know if it's free, it's for me, but I got it. I'm all in on that.
01:01But is it true? And I need to know a little bit of the reason why.
01:05Okay. So we went to South Bend to interview Marcus Freeman, who's become a friend of mine.
01:12You know, I have his number on my phone. I can call him. He'll call me back.
01:16And I went there, and they gave me a gigantic Notre Dame bag full of shorts and shirts and jackets and sweaters and all this stuff.
01:24And I get dressed in the dark because I wake up at 5.45 a.m.
01:28I just throw a shirt on. Coincidentally, DBJ, I'm sorry.
01:32I threw on a Notre Dame shirt this week.
01:35Yeah, not this week, DBJ.
01:36Okay. Now, look. Any week but this week. And I understand. But look here.
01:43Give me the size, bro, because I'm getting you a bigger bag, and I'm dropping off.
01:47What's the size? And listen, you got Marcus Freeman's phone number.
01:52I hear anybody can get that number. That's no big deal, bro. That's no big deal.
01:57I'm too ex, DBJ. I'll throw some game stuff for him.
02:01But are you dropping him a bunch of UM stuff, or is it Don Bailey flooring merch?
02:06It's absolutely both, bro. He's a two-for-one. He's a two-for-one.
02:10Yes, sir!
02:12I mean, my man acts like he's homeless. He's looking for free clothes everywhere.
02:17And now look at this. Double X's.
02:20Bro, what size shoe? I know there's some triple E's. What are the size shoe?
02:24I'm going 12, DBJ.
02:2712? Okay.
02:28I mean, fuck. I mean, I hear my guy. I hear, I mean, really. Notre Dame, bro?
02:34Out of all weeks to wear it. And it is amazing. Like you say, he's crying poor.
02:41And so if it's a free T-shirt, he'll wear it.
02:43And in the meantime, yesterday, he knocked down like four Topo Chico's during the show
02:48because that was the two-for-one at the gas station.
02:51I don't know what's going on with this guy half the time.
02:54Well, I mean, I understand. I mean, I got a little bit of that at me as well.
02:59But, like, I have a lot. I mean, let me ask you this. This will clear it right up.
03:03Would you wear a Bulldog jersey, bro, if it was free?
03:08Oh, yeah. That's a hell of a question.
03:11I can't throw on no UGA stuff.
03:14That's why he doesn't like Carson Beck as much as everyone else.
03:20You just nailed it, DBJ.
03:21You know what?
03:23You just nailed it.
03:25All right.
03:26How do the Hurricanes upset Notre Dame?
03:29They are underdogs.
03:30How do the Hurricanes upset Notre Dame Sunday night here in Miami?
03:35I think if they can break even in the run game, I think that's a big thing.
03:40You know, Notre Dame's going to come in with a very successful rushing attack
03:46that really, I think, helped lead them to the championship game last year,
03:50especially if you throw in the quarterback numbers.
03:52So I think Miami's going to have to go toe-to-toe with them in the run game.
03:56And then in any game like this, especially week one,
03:59the giveaway-takeaway battle, for me, is the biggest thing.
04:02And, DBJ, I'm torn on this because I do think it's going to be an under
04:06because Heatherman's defense was top ten in every category in Minnesota.
04:10I think he'd get them boys right.
04:11But Notre Dame has a top five defense last year as well.
04:15But I just, as we talked about it, DBJ,
04:18I don't know if you want to get into a street fight with an MMA fighter.
04:23Like, do you try to outrush them, or do you open it up and find some mismatches
04:27because I think we're probably faster.
04:30I don't want to just – I don't want the Canes to just try to whoop Notre Dame's butt
04:33because I don't know if they can.
04:34Well, here's how I would look at that.
04:38I would say that the Miami offensive line, anybody that I've seen so far,
04:44you know, and I studied some stuff in the summer, Miami's offensive line,
04:47they can hold up against anybody when it comes to running the football.
04:49I believe that.
04:50I'm not going to tell you they're going to rush for 200,
04:53but they can go toe-to-toe on the – Miami's offensive line can go toe-to-toe.
04:57Now, I'm with you.
04:59Miami's going to have to see how much speed they've got on the outside.
05:03You're 100% right.
05:05There's a bunch of guys that are brand new as far as going into a football game
05:10dressed in a hurricane uniform.
05:12They're going to have to see if they can work their way open.
05:15And in fairness, Notre Dame's labeled with one of the best secondaries too
05:19because that's going to be another battle.
05:21So it's going to be skill on the outside, and it's going to be big man stuff
05:24on the inside.
05:26DBJ, I'm not downplaying any of the big man stuff on the inside.
05:30I'm not downplaying the physical nature that Notre Dame presents in a game like this,
05:35but are we all just looking a little too deep into this game?
05:39Bottom line for me, CJ Carr, zero big game experience,
05:45zero legitimate experience going up against somebody who has played in big game
05:50after big game after big game on the road at Bama playing in the SEC.
05:55To me, it's that simple, like prime time, the lights have never been brighter
06:00on basically a rookie with zero experience going up against somebody
06:04who's used to playing in this type of situation.
06:07I think it's a great point.
06:09And if I'm Notre Dame, that's my biggest concern, and I've got to figure out,
06:13especially in the first half, how to protect him to make sure that he just runs
06:18the offense and gets comfortable and keep it close in the first half.
06:21And then let's see what he's done in the first half and what he does well
06:25and how he adjusts to it.
06:26That is a huge point because when you look at Carson Beck
06:30and the fact that he's been on national championship teams
06:34and prepared for that, he's been to Florida Field.
06:39He's been to Tennessee.
06:41He's been to Alabama.
06:42He's been on the road in big environments.
06:45This is a big environment for the city of Miami,
06:48the University of Miami at Hard Rock.
06:51It's a day at the beach in the Southeastern Conference a lot of the time.
06:55I mean, Alabama-Auburn is bigger than this as far as attendance goes.
07:01You know, Florida-Georgia, what they do there.
07:03So he's been in some big games and he's been to some places.
07:06I think that's a huge advantage for Miami is to have the most experienced quarterback
07:12who can play, by the way.
07:14All right, Don Bailey Jr., if you're new to the program,
07:18he works in some lines from movies and songs and the show and pop culture.
07:24We know we have a lot of new listeners because we're on the FM now
07:27and you're going to sound unbelievable on the FM, DBJ,
07:31when you're delivering some of these lines.
07:33So are you ready for the first salvo of lines to work into the broadcast?
07:38I mean, I've been losing sleep the last two weeks just in anticipation for this.
07:44I really have, bro.
07:45This makes my deal.
07:47I'm serious.
07:48I love it.
07:49All right.
07:49We do, too.
07:50The first one we're going to give you, this is an old Woody Allen movie.
07:54I don't know why I got fascinated with this line a few weeks ago,
07:59but I couldn't stop saying it.
08:01I can't even remember in what context I was using it,
08:03but there's an old Woody Allen movie from the 70s called Bananas
08:07and there was a scene where someone gets bitten by a snake
08:12and you have to get rid of the poison, obviously.
08:15Here's the line from the movie.
08:17In the event of snake bite, you make an incision and you suck out the poison.
08:21Remember, you suck out the poison.
08:25All right.
08:25So in the event of a snake bite, you make an incision and you suck out the poison.
08:31Remember, you suck out the poison.
08:34Remember, you suck out the poison.
08:37I think that, can I just use, remember, you suck out the poison.
08:40Can I just use that or do you want me to go through this whole paragraph?
08:43We'll give you the three lines, but if you just want to use at some point,
08:47you know, Joe, things seem to be going awry here
08:52and you got to get things turned around.
08:53Sometimes you just have to suck out the poison.
08:58I love it.
08:59I love it.
09:01That one will make me laugh.
09:02I don't think any other listener might want me.
09:05My dad's a big Woody Allen guy.
09:07Oh, there you go.
09:07He'll get a laugh out of that one.
09:09Yeah.
09:09All right.
09:10Perfect.
09:10Perfect.
09:12This is a Rick Astley song.
09:15I think everyone knows this song.
09:17But play the song.
09:18See if DBJ knows this.
09:19Is the intention here that he rickrolls Joe Z?
09:32Like, is that what we're doing here?
09:34Like, or is he just doing this as a line?
09:36I like the way he's telling Joe Z he'll never desert him.
09:41All right.
09:41Fair enough.
09:42He's kind of saying to Joe, maybe at the beginning of the broadcast, Joe,
09:46I'm so happy to be back for another season.
09:47Never going to give you up.
09:49Never going to let you down.
09:50Never going to run around and desert you.
09:52You know, if I had the nerve, I would use that as my open for this football game.
09:58I just, I just, I just can't do that to Joe.
10:02I really, I have to share a little respect for my guy.
10:05I just can't look at, tap him on the shoulder, look him in the eyes and say that line.
10:10I just can't do that.
10:11I feel like there would be no greater sign of respect than re reciting Rick Astley lyrics
10:16to your broadcast partner.
10:18But if you get written approval by Mr. Zagaki, I'll do it.
10:22We had Joe on, do we have him on this week?
10:25Yeah, Monday.
10:25And he said, you have carte blanche to do whatever you want.
10:30Oh, wow.
10:31Okay, man.
10:33There we go.
10:34Or something like that.
10:35He said something like that.
10:38I might have pushed it a little far, but yeah.
10:41You remember the, I mean, I mean, Joe's got some rules in the box that you have to respect
10:45because like he's right.
10:47I mean, his rules are correct, you know, but if you said I got carte blanche, I'll just.
10:51I'm pretty sure he said that.
10:53Jimmy, check the audio and call Josie when you have a chance.
10:57You remember the Costco guys, the AJ and Big Justice?
11:02We had you do a line last season about double chunk chocolate cookies.
11:06You remember that?
11:07I do.
11:08All right.
11:08Well, they have a new banger out called Big Fat Meatballs.
11:11And here's the lines from that song.
11:14Big fat meatballs.
11:16They're our favorite meal.
11:18Big fat meatballs made of pork, beef, and meal.
11:22Big fat meatballs for our daughter and son.
11:26Big fat meatballs for everyone.
11:30All right.
11:30That was too, admittedly, too many lines.
11:33Solana got a little overzealous there.
11:35It's game one.
11:36We're all working out the kink.
11:37So just the first two lines.
11:39Big fat meatballs.
11:40They're our favorite meal.
11:42Big fat meatballs made of pork, beef, and veal.
11:47I like it.
11:48That'll go.
11:48That's a big one.
11:50Right?
11:50I like that last line better, though.
11:52Talking about that.
11:53You want to do the last two lines, then?
11:55Big fat meatballs for our daughter and son.
11:57Big fat meatballs for everyone.
12:00Yeah, for everyone.
12:01Listen, send them all.
12:02I'll choose it.
12:03Just send the whole thing.
12:04We never know.
12:05We might be blowing Notre Dame out.
12:06You're talking about the trenches with Josie, and you're like, tell you what, Mario recruits size.
12:11I got a feeling they're eating big fat meatballs.
12:15They're our favorite meal.
12:17Big fat meatballs made of pork, beef, and veal.
12:23Jesus Christ.
12:25Yep.
12:25I'm all over pork.
12:27Yeah.
12:27Yeah.
12:29The people that know me will love that because I hadn't had a meatball in 40 years.
12:34So, they'll really appreciate that.
12:37If Notre Dame is down big, it seems like the lights are out.
12:41The curtain is dropping.
12:43Perhaps a couple lines from O'Danny Boy.
12:46O'Danny Boy.
12:49O'Danny Boy.
12:51I love you so.
12:53That, I hope, happens, my friend.
13:00I will give you the best O'Danny Boy you've ever heard.
13:03I knew you would.
13:04I knew you would.
13:06Oh, yeah.
13:07I was off a couple hours this week, and apparently Crowder went into the Batman well.
13:15Now, I've never seen The Dark Knight.
13:17I have to be honest here.
13:18I've never seen The Dark Knight.
13:19This is The Dark Knight Rises, not The Dark Knight.
13:21Both are must-watch movies.
13:24Dark Knight Rises, I've seen.
13:25Dark Knight, I haven't seen.
13:27I'm just teasing.
13:27I have not seen.
13:28I'm seeing you.
13:29He was so annoyed by me.
13:30No, I've not seen either of them.
13:32But here's a line from Bane.
13:34Oh, you think darkness is your ally.
13:40You merely adopted The Dark.
13:43I was born in it.
13:45Molded by it.
13:50Night game, DBJ.
13:51Night game.
13:51Yeah, night game.
13:52You think darkness is your ally?
13:55You merely adopted The Dark.
13:57I was born in it.
13:59Molded by it.
14:00Man, Channing.
14:04What were you wearing when you were watching that movie, Channing?
14:06What were you wearing?
14:08Were you wearing your little Batman outfit?
14:10You had your little hat on?
14:11Your little Batman?
14:14You don't put a Batman mask on when you watch Batman?
14:17I thought everybody did.
14:19Well, about every third Friday night, I get to wear my Batman outfit at home.
14:24I'm happy to put that on.
14:25Good for you, man.
14:27Hey.
14:28Good for you.
14:29Final one.
14:31Just a quickie from American Pie.
14:33Oh, and this one time at band camp?
14:36This one time at band camp?
14:41What?
14:43Just whatever.
14:44If Josie's talking about training camp or whatever, any kind of camp, you can say, you know, Josie, that reminds me.
14:50This one time at band camp?
14:53Oh, and this one time at band camp?
14:56You know what?
14:57I think that one's my favorite.
14:59Yeah, that's a good one.
15:00You ever play the flute, BBJ?
15:02All right.
15:04Oh, Victor Bermuda is texting me.
15:08For a Reuben Bain sack, you do the line from Bain.
15:13Oh, I love that.
15:14It makes all the sense in the world.
15:15That's perfect.
15:16So if Reuben Bain gets to the QB, then you'll drop the darkness line.
15:20Oh, you think darkness is your ally.
15:25You merely adopted the dark.
15:27I was born in it.
15:29I was born in it, molded by it.
15:32Oh, hey, Vic's in charge.
15:36What Vic says goes.
15:38Remember that.
15:38If Vic buys in, then you know it's a good line.
15:41That's a good tie-in with Reuben Bain.
15:43That's perfect.
15:44All right, BBJ, you've got a lot of homework.
15:47You've got a lot of homework.
15:49You've got a lot to do.
15:51Make sure you send them all.
15:52And what size do you wear, Hawk?
15:54Because I don't want to lose you to the Notre Dame side either,
15:56like my guy here who can get bought off real easy.
15:59What size are you, large, X-large?
16:01I wear XL on everything because I've got the man boobs,
16:05so I try to make sure that they're not out there.
16:09So does the double X for Channing mean he's got double X for large man boobs?
16:14I think I'm more shoulder than Hawk, though.
16:18But, DBJ, you don't have to worry about me wearing a Notre Dame shirt.
16:23I mean, what are we even talking about here?
16:25Now, if you've got a shirt that promotes Don Bailey flooring,
16:28laminates, and whatever, I'm all over it.
16:30I'll wear that all day, all night.
16:33You'll probably get three of those in one UM shirt, guys.
16:36That's probably how that's going to work.
16:38All right, fair enough.
16:39We're in.
16:40DBJ, we love you.
16:41We're excited for the season.
16:42We will be listening Sunday night.
16:45It all gets underway at 3 p.m.
16:48Pre-game begins at 3.
16:49Game kicks off at 7.30, and you can hear it here on WQAM, 1043 FM.
