Radio host on 680 the Fan in Atlanta & Miami Hurricanes superfan John Michaels breaks down why the CFP committee should put the Hurricanes in the College Football Playoff.
Transcript
00:00And before we talk football, I remind you the best place to get geared up
00:03with Canes merch, Dolphins merch, Caneswear in Davie or online at caneswear.com.
00:09By the way, today is Cyber Monday, so go to caneswear.com.
00:13The best online deals of the year.
00:17John Michaels is on the Toyota of Hollywood hotline.
00:20He hosts mornings on 680 The Fan in Atlanta.
00:23You hear him nationally on ESPN radio.
00:26He is, in my humble opinion, the biggest Canes fan in all of media.
00:31And so he's probably the way I've gotten myself riled up a number of times already today.
00:38I'm imagining we're going to get the same from John here.
00:42Do the Miami Hurricanes belong in the college football playoffs?
00:47Is the ocean wet?
00:49I mean, does a one-legged duck swim in circles?
00:52Does a bear poop in the woods?
00:54You're damn right we belong in the playoffs.
00:56So what I'm hoping, you know what, Dan Radakovich, you're my dude.
01:00Our new athlete, or not our new, but our athletic director down at Miami, because he's fighting
01:04the good fight.
01:05I know we've had previous athletic directors, thank God he's up at Boston College, Blake
01:08James that would have cowered in a corner and be like, whatever you guys want, just keep
01:12us out.
01:12We don't care.
01:13Dan Radakovich is fighting and he's putting out truth and he's putting out facts.
01:17So what people love to pick and choose throughout this whole process was where the strength of
01:23schedule was in week eight or where it was in week 10, not remembering that Notre Dame
01:27had to play two awful teams at the end of the year in Syracuse and Stanford, who Miami had
01:32already played and now drags their strength of schedule to where I think Notre Dame's at
01:3642, Miami's at 44.
01:38The strength of records like Notre Dame's at 13, Miami's at 14.
01:41The FPI, if you want to use that, ESPN has Notre Dame at three, Miami at seven.
01:46Point being, those are right like this.
01:48They're close as you can be.
01:50What does that mean?
01:51Now you go to the number one metric in any sport to differentiate teams with the same
01:56record.
01:56And that's what happened on the damn field.
01:59Miami kicked their ass up and down the field.
02:01I was sitting there, row six, section 106, seats one and two, watching us physically beat
02:06up Notre Dame.
02:06Unless they had a draft and they were able to go get new offensive linemen to block Reuben
02:11Bain and Justin Scott and Akeem Mesidor.
02:13Guess what?
02:14You still can't block any of those dudes and Miami needs to be in the postseason.
02:18I'm telling you, Sunday at noon, if they leave us out of these playoffs, the piss and vinegar
02:24that's going to be coming out of me is going to be second to none.
02:27And you've heard me riled up a lot of times on this show.
02:30And John, the love for Notre Dame, I kind of understand it, but it's a lore of Notre Dame.
02:35That's what people want.
02:36And even Alabama, like they've won multiple, Nick Saban put them back on the map.
02:40But is it a lack of lore with UM?
02:42I'm saying we now, not because I'm bandwagon, but I think I'm doing what's right.
02:47I think UM is getting messed over bad in this whole thing.
02:49But why are the people that aren't Canes fans, why are they not giving the same respect to
02:54UM that they are a Notre Dame?
02:56I wish I could answer that question.
02:58I saw Heather Dennett.
02:58Somebody found an old video of her from week one where they asked her point blank,
03:03would the head-to-head game between Miami and Notre Dame matters?
03:06And unequivocally, Heather Dennett said, yes, it would matter.
03:09It's one of the metrics.
03:11Head-to-head has to matter.
03:12And the last four weeks, she's just pooped all over the fact, well, it was week one
03:16and Notre Dame had a new quarterback and they had to break in this and had to.
03:19It's mind-blowing, Channing, that people that are supposed to be really smart football minds
03:24lose their damn mind when it comes to talking about Miami and the college football playoffs.
03:30Do you think right now Oklahoma is better than Alabama?
03:34Ooh, yes.
03:36Okay.
03:36And you would say so because why?
03:38They just beat Alabama a couple of weeks ago on a field on a game in which they were outgained
03:43by over 200 yards, yet they picked off Alabama and caused them to turn it over.
03:47But the answer is yes, because on the field they won.
03:51Guess who's ranked above a who in the college football playoff rankings?
03:55It's Oklahoma over Alabama.
03:56Do you think Georgia's better than Ole Miss?
03:58Of course you do.
03:59Georgia beat Ole Miss.
04:00You know who's ranked above?
04:01Georgia's ahead of Ole Miss.
04:03Yet for some reason, I think it was seven times over the last year, teams that had the
04:08same amount of losses and competed head-to-head, the team that won was ranked higher in every
04:14single case except Miami and Notre Dame.
04:16And I know you get drawn in.
04:18Notre Dame's won 10 in a row.
04:20Really dissect who they've beaten over these 10 games.
04:22They beat Boston College, who I think has one win.
04:25Syracuse, who was starting lacrosse players at the end of the year.
04:28They beat Stanford.
04:30They beat Arkansas, who fired a coach.
04:32Like, their only solid wins are USC, good win, and Pitt.
04:37Miami beat Pitt by more than Notre Dame did in the cold and 30 degrees in a game that we're
04:43all supposed to lose.
04:44Everything says Miami should be in except the old geezers they put in this damn playoff
04:49committee who could go, well, golly gee, we got to get the Fighting Irish in there.
04:53We're going to get Newt Rockne in the Four Horsemen.
04:55Kiss my rear end with that.
04:56It's ridiculous.
04:57They need people with balls on this committee to challenge idiots that are sitting in the
05:03committee right now.
05:04John, how do you propose to change this from ever happening again?
05:08I don't know where to start because I'm upset with the ACC.
05:11Credit to them for campaigning for Miami.
05:13Like, they're posting the graphics and, like, credit to them for that.
05:16But I think they're kind of at fault here as well because I'm looking at Duke with five
05:21losses in the ACC championship game because ACC is like, we want more money.
05:25They expand and it screws their entire format.
05:28And, you know, Miami, credit to them for scheduling Florida, for scheduling Notre Dame.
05:33But maybe they don't anymore.
05:34Maybe they play Bethune, FAMU, and FIU every single year because why not if it means they
05:39have a better chance at getting to the college football playoff?
05:42It's ridiculous because, Solana, you did exactly what you're supposed to do.
05:45And I know Texas, Sarkees, I shouldn't have scheduled Ohio State.
05:48No, you shouldn't have lost to eight-loss Florida.
05:50Sorry, Channing.
05:50I wasn't going to take a Florida shot, but I had to.
05:53You lose to eight-loss Florida, you need to be out of the playoff.
05:55You need to be there.
05:58How do you fix it, Solana?
05:59I don't know.
06:01It's the hardest thing to say.
06:02I don't know.
06:02Number one, the ACC, I would bet every dime that I have that the day the college football
06:07playoffs come to an end, Jim Phillips making $2 million or $3 million a year comes out and
06:11goes, well, we're going to change our tiebreakers and we're going to get rid of common conference
06:16opponents or conference opponents.
06:18It was the dumbest thing I've ever seen.
06:20Duke got in because they didn't play Florida State, who drug our conference schedule down.
06:25They didn't play Boston College or Syracuse, I don't believe, but they also, of the five
06:31teams that were tied, went 0-2 against the other five teams that they were tied against.
06:36It should have simply been, okay, here's like three tiebreakers and then we're going to do
06:39just college football playoff ranking and it would be Miami and Virginia and then guess
06:43what?
06:43The committee would be off the hook.
06:45The second part is actually go by the laws that you lay down.
06:49If you pull up any, uh, any document, it lays out the criteria for the playoff committee
06:54head to head common opponents.
06:56Then it gets into all the minutia that everybody's bringing up.
06:59The problem is they, they navigate their narration week by week on what they want to have happen.
07:05Get rid of the AP poll.
07:07You know why Tennessee and Missouri should never have been ranked all year yet.
07:12You know who gets propped up for beating Tennessee and Missouri as ranked teams.
07:16Anybody in the sec, Tennessee beat as many FBS teams with a winning record as the five
07:22of us have beaten.
07:23Like literally that's where it's at, but because there's a beginning bias that carries
07:27through the season.
07:27Now you go, well, Miami's got all these bad losses.
07:30They lost the two teams that went eight and four yet.
07:32Alabama beats Tennessee.
07:34They're going to got a rank win against eight and four Tennessee.
07:36Like how stupid does all of this sound?
07:39It sounds ridiculous.
07:40And the Tennessee thing is maddening.
07:43Like it is maddening that they've been ranked all season.
07:46Like honestly, the same way Hawk Missouri is the exact same way, but let me ask you this.
07:52You said at the beginning, if Sunday at noon rolls around and I find out such and such,
07:58are you holding out hope that this pressure campaign could somehow work on the committee?
08:04I've got a couple of different pieces of hope.
08:06One, I think there's been a groundswell.
08:08Greg McIlroy, Eric McClain at ACC network, obviously the ACC itself, Dan Radakovic, Booger
08:14McFarlane, there's been a lot of talking heads that are now going, wait a second.
08:18They both finished 10 and two.
08:20It's time to really evaluate this head to head game and make it matter.
08:23So I do have hope that maybe that talk bullies the committee into doing something that should
08:28have been done weeks ago.
08:29My second part of hope, and I'm going to disagree about Alabama getting in, and I'm
08:33going to give you a little factual information.
08:35Last year, they said, nobody's going to drop out.
08:38Well, that's because your games were, I think it was Oregon and Penn State who were both
08:42calmly in the top five.
08:43They weren't falling out.
08:44It was Georgia and Texas who were both top six teams.
08:47Neither one of them were falling out.
08:49It was Clemson and SMU.
08:52Remember, SMU was ranked eighth.
08:54Clemson was out of there.
08:55They said basically they weren't going to drop SMU from eight to 13.
09:00Alabama's number 10.
09:02BYU is currently number 11.
09:04Miami sits at number 12.
09:06And I don't want to hear that that data point doesn't matter because if that's the case,
09:10get rid of the conference championships games altogether, stop having to be a bunny grab.
09:14If Alabama loses for their third loss, also with a common opponent, which is one of the
09:19criterias in the college football playoff with Miami, they lost by 14 to Florida State.
09:24We beat them by six.
09:25If they have a third loss, they're out.
09:27If BYU, who has got no love at 11 and one, loses to Texas Tech again, they're out.
09:32So I do have a little bit of hope that something happens.
09:35And my last piece of hope, and I hope this happens for Jim Phillips just because he's a
09:39weasel commissioner that does nothing right, I want Duke to win.
09:43Because then the committee may put two group of five teams in.
09:47And I think at that point, they look around and go, we can't have a college football playoff
09:51without an ACC representative.
09:53They're not going to put Duke in at eight and five.
09:55Maybe then they give Miami some love.
09:57So there is hope.
09:58Maybe I'm an optimist at this point.
10:00Maybe a Mario Cristobal standing there on the field at Pittsburgh going, the field test
10:03should matter.
10:04And my guy, Coach Steven Field, sending out the field test should matter.
10:07Maybe somebody actually with common sense looks and says, the field test should matter.
10:11I got to push back you ACC guys on this SEC, because I'm going to wave my blue and yellow
10:17flag here a little bit.
10:18Okay, John?
10:19Oh, the Missouris and the Tennessees are getting whooped by real good teams.
10:23I'm with you.
10:24Missouri and Tennessee aren't good.
10:25But they're playing with Alabama.
10:28They're playing with Florida.
10:30Florida's playing with Texas.
10:32And now Texas is supposed to be this big thing.
10:33Florida beat Texas.
10:34So we're kind of cannibalizing each other.
10:37Well, there's no ACC.
10:39There's vegetarians.
10:40There's nobody to eat each other.
10:41Well, we whooped Florida.
10:43And we physically beat the hell out of Florida who beat Texas.
10:46Texas.
10:46It's not a shot at UM, John.
10:48I guess the ACC is so weak that the disrespect is always going to be there.
10:52See, and I don't think it is.
10:53Georgia Tech, who has no defense, holds Georgia to 16 points over the weekend.
10:57No defense.
10:58Pitt and NC State went up and down the field like they were playing seven-on-seven flag football
11:03against Georgia Tech.
11:05Yeah, Georgia Tech holds a team that I think is a national title contender to 16 points.
11:09Miami beats Florida who beats Texas.
11:11Miami whoops Florida State who whoops Alabama.
11:14So when you want to do that compare and contrast, I don't disagree.
11:17I think there is a hierarchy.
11:19I think Georgia, Ole Miss, Texas A&M are up here.
11:23I think Alabama is on par with Miami and some other teams.
11:27And the rest of the SEC, to me, lives off name recognition and name recognition.
11:31I like Diego Pavia.
11:33I love his mom.
11:34I think his mom's got some swag.
11:35So I'm okay with that.
11:36If she wants to twerk on a pole, go for it.
11:38I have no problem with that.
11:39You're cheering for your son.
11:41But I think the SEC gets propped up by name recognition.
11:44Tennessee and Missouri are the biggest case studies.
11:46If they had Mountain West or Big 12 patches, nobody would think about them being ranked.
11:52Real quick, 60 seconds, John, because we're up against a break here.
11:56Your take on Lane Kiffin and what transpired?
11:58Well, he's a narcissistic jerk.
12:01He always has been and he always will be.
12:04Here's my equation to what he did this weekend.
12:06And I thought it was so selfish.
12:08He was basically a husband that told his wife, I'm leaving you at the end of the year for
12:13the hot girl down the street, but I want to stay for the holidays to hang out with you
12:18and the kids.
12:19But then at the end of the holidays, I'm going to take the car, the bank account and the kids
12:23and we're going to move them in with her.
12:25It was a jerk move.
12:26If he could have simply sat down in front of his team a week ago, he knew I heard you
12:31guys talk about it.
12:31He didn't have a talk with God.
12:33He had a talk with $90 million.
12:35Get the hell out of here.
12:36Unless his accountant's name is God.
12:39Oh, he meant Jesus.
12:41Oh, did that read Jesus on the thing I was talking about?
12:48My CPA, Jesus.
12:50Look, he could have simply sat down a week ago and been a man and told his kids, what
12:55I want is I'm going to leave for LSU.
12:57I'd like to coach to the end, but they're probably not going to let me.
13:00Why would Ole Miss ever let him coach?
13:02That's the dumbest thing ever.
13:03And all the national media guys.
13:05Again, I go back to, aren't you smarter than this?
13:07Why would Ole Miss say, sure, that's one of our biggest rivals.
13:11Come and recruit all our players and half of our offensive staff and take them on with
13:15us.
13:15By the way, lunch and dinner.
13:18Right.
13:19I mean, stupid.
13:22He's damn.
13:23He is who he is.
13:25Take how it happened.
13:27He's in a better situation, though.
13:29No doubt.
13:29LSU is a better job.
13:31I've said that openly a hundred times.
13:32LSU is a better, you can win a national title at LSU.
13:35This year was the ceiling at Ole Miss.
13:37You're never winning a title at Ole Miss.
13:39Sometimes you just got to see it out, though.
13:41I mean, you're going to have other opportunities.
13:43He's going to have other opportunities.
13:45I don't think it's been his lifelong dream to coach at LSU.
13:50It's the second best job in the country, though, Hawk.
13:52Like, I mean, top, top three job in the country.
13:55LSU?
13:55Yes.
13:56The second best college football coaching job in the country?
13:59Maybe the third best, top three, easily.
14:02No.
14:03I'd say top five, but not top three.
14:05Ohio State's number one.
14:06Georgia's there.
14:07Texas is there.
14:09Then all of a sudden you put LSU.
14:11LSU has to compete with nobody in their own state for recruits.
14:15There's no other school in the country.
14:17Look at the coaching staff across all their sports.
14:21Okay, you're doing it a different way than I'm doing it.
14:23And the money that they're paying you for.
14:24Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:25No, I mean, we're arguing, like, you know, we're splitting hairs here because it's a great job.
14:32I'm just saying, at some point, sometimes in your life, he's not starving for money.
14:38Right.
14:39He's not starving for success.
14:41See this particular thing through.
14:44Even if it delays your move a year or two, see this through.
14:51You owe that.
14:52And again, I'm not the big you owe anybody anything guy.
14:56You owe that.
14:58I know what he said to those players to get them there, to get them to buy in.
15:02Like, I don't know.
15:03Just seems real.
15:05There should be.
15:06He's got you hot.
15:06There should be no way that the NCAA allows something like this to happen at this moment
15:15in a season.
15:16There should be some sort of freeze, some sort of something.
15:20Anyway, we're on.
15:20I want to be Charlie Baker, who makes like $5 million to sit in his NCAA tower and do nothing.
15:25Nothing.
15:26Nothing.
15:27Absolutely nothing.
15:29You need to fold it.
15:30NCAA is worthless.
15:31Crazy.
15:32John Michaels, follow him on Twitter at John Michaels, the letter U.
15:37I'll hold out hope, John.
15:38We're getting in.
15:39Have faith.
15:40I will hold out hope.
