00:00:34Delighted to have your company on a day when the football world will be paying tribute to Rod Petrie.

00:00:41Certainly in a Scottish perspective, the Hibs fans will look back on him with a great bonus

00:00:46because he was, after all, one of those chairmen that had the interests of the club at heart.

00:00:54Tammy McManus.

00:00:54Yeah, he certainly did, Peter. Sad news, I hope McLeish broke the news to me last night

00:01:00on a little chat with him and some other guys, ex-Hibs players, and it was sad news.

00:01:03I know he'd been struggling a couple of years ago with health,

00:01:06and I think someone had seen him a few weeks ago at the Rockweiss Eason game,

00:01:09and he didn't look too great.

00:01:11So it's a sad day for all Hibs supporters.

00:01:14You know, I had a few dealings with Rod when I was at Hibs at the club, and it was all contracts

00:01:20or getting fined.

00:01:22And the one for me was obviously when we get done with the strippers, and I had to go up

00:01:26to the scene.

00:01:27You actually got done for that?

00:01:28Wow.

00:01:29We got fined the week's wages.

00:01:31Rockweiss looked at you as if you should have won an award.

00:01:33So we got fined the week's wages, and then obviously he said, listen, Tam, keep your

00:01:38head down, don't be doing anything stupid.

00:01:40And then the next week, obviously, I scored it during the night, he'd done the pole dance,

00:01:44the celebration, and his office again on Monday, the following Monday.

00:01:47And he said, listen, I'm fined you in our week's wages, Tam, but I'll take it off next

00:01:51month's wages, because I don't want you struggling this month.

00:01:54And he says, please, just stay in this weekend.

00:01:56So I did stay in the following weekend until about 8 o'clock or something, and then I went

00:01:59out.

00:02:00But I really had a lot of time for Rod.

00:02:02And I think he'd done a lot of good work for Hibs.

00:02:05He had a lot of highs in the League Cup in 2007, the Scottish Cup 2016, a few lows, relegation

00:02:11in 2014, I think, by Terry Butcher.

00:02:14Sacking Frank Sosey was probably one of his lows as well.

00:02:16I think that that was a really unpopular decision by a lot of Hibs supporters.

00:02:19But I think over the piece, you know, look at the training ground that Hibs have got

00:02:23now, who's a huge part in that as well.

00:02:25And the club was always in a stable financial footing under Rod.

00:02:28You know, there was never any problems financially.

00:02:30So I think over the piece, he looked at it fondly with a lot of Hibs supporters.

00:02:34Yeah.

00:02:34And over and above that, Ruffy, to be perfectly honest with you, when you have longevity because

00:02:39you have a love of football and a commitment to Hibs, and that's one thing.

00:02:43But I think his comments, his contribution to the SPFL board, and certainly to people at

00:02:50the SFA would be appreciated as well.

00:02:52Yeah, he elevated, obviously, with everything he did at Hibs and took on to the board.

00:02:58You know, for me, he was quite a quiet guy.

00:03:00He sort of went about his job.

00:03:01You know, he wasn't wanting to be in the limelight or then.

00:03:04He just went about his business, changing whatever he had to change, and had a big input

00:03:08and everything at the SFA as well.

00:03:10Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen him laugh at me, Ruffy, but that wasn't necessarily just

00:03:18down there.

00:03:18Yeah, he had a pretty dry sense of humour, Peter, once you got to know him.

00:03:19He did have a dry sense of humour, but that wasn't just Rod, that's other chairman along

00:03:25the way.

00:03:26Anyway, I think, you know, from a football perspective, and certainly all the Hibs supporters and people

00:03:33close to Rod's family and friends, our condolences from everybody on the football show, Rod Petrie

00:03:40passing away at the age of 69.

00:05:18I hope we're all good after a disappointing week in Europe, and boy, was it disappointing.

00:05:25And I am looking right now, and I mean, the doomsday scenario is that all four clubs could be facing defeat.

00:05:36Some of them will still have European football, but boy, you know, from the highs of last week enjoying some of the Scottish football,

00:05:44once they went up against Europe, Ruffey, woeful is the only way I can describe it.

00:05:49Yeah, I mean, I know we'll start talking about each game individually, but if we start with the Celtic one,

00:05:55I think that was the biggest disappointment.

00:05:57I think we all sat here going 2-0, 3-0, maybe 4, you know, but this team came very well organised, you know.

00:06:04But unfortunately for Celtic, too many players never turned up on the night.

00:06:09Big pressure game, and I think I'd be lucky if I could get two pass marks on the forum that they usually produce in European games.

00:06:17But it never happened, and obviously the debate about, you know, players coming in is going to raise its ugly head.

00:06:24But at this particular time, he was making changes, and the players that were coming on were not making any difference to the game.

00:06:32Whereas before, the subs that were coming on were making a difference year on year, but not to be this time.

00:06:39I would go as far as to say that nothing really changes, and nor will it change, the strategy of the way Celtic go about their business.

00:06:47I don't think fans protesting makes a blind bit of difference right now.

00:06:52It's been going on so long.

00:06:54All I would say, Rafi Tam and I discussed it in great length yesterday, all I would say is that right now is not the time for mutiny on the Celtic bounty.

00:07:04Because quite simply, the board and Brendan Rodgers and this team will wait and say, well, there's still another leg to go.

00:07:13They could still win it and get into the Champions League.

00:07:16So before everybody starts, you know, voicing their real heavy displeasure about this, there's still another game to go.

00:07:24And I think Celtic are more than capable of going there and winning.

00:07:27Yeah, I think they are.

00:07:28They're proved when they go away from home.

00:07:30They have a structure now that they can go and see out games before that wasn't the case.

00:07:35But they certainly know, we saw Brendan Rodgers changing his tactics for that hammering they got,

00:07:41that they can go away from home and do well.

00:07:43But I think at this moment in time, there has to be a bit of clarity for the fans.

00:07:47And I don't mean them coming out and saying, this is what we're doing or this is the player we're after or whatever.

00:07:53There needs to be, the board need to come out and say to people, look, we are trying to buy players.

00:07:58No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no names, no names are in.

00:08:02The board don't need to do that because basically the Celtic fans are absolutely scunnered with that line.

00:08:09You've got to give them something, Peter.

00:08:10What, the same line that's been out since 2003?

00:08:13Yeah, you've got to come out.

00:08:14You can't have people, you know, attacking the board in a game and getting up there.

00:08:19Just tell them something.

00:08:20Because the way Brendan Rodgers putting it out there, well, nothing coming in, it's not my fault.

00:08:26So the board then have to come out and say, look, we are actively trying to buy players here.

00:08:30It's very, very difficult.

00:08:32Because it's a nothing, there's nothing coming out and they're just sitting there saying nothing.

00:08:38So when you say nothing, fans go, well, are they bringing players in?

00:08:43Are they making an effort to bring players in?

00:08:45The reason why they're saying nothing, one is the strategy and the blueprint, whether you like it or not, is in place.

00:08:54Now, I always, and we always on this programme, since we started PLZ Soccer, whether it's Rangers, Celtic or anybody else, try and offer balance on this issue.

00:09:06The issue sometimes when you get to the people who work in the PR at Celtic, you know, the message that goes back the way is not always the same.

00:09:15So I'll give you it straight, you know, for since 2003, since that board has come together in various different areas.

00:09:22It's quite simply that they deserve credit because they run it like a well-oiled machine.

00:09:28Financially, for a group of accountants and bankers who've all operated in that board, along with Dermot Desmond, who makes all the decisions.

00:09:35You know, they're to be applauded that they have close to £100 million in the bank and, you know, they run this strategy, this blueprint the way they want.

00:09:48Every now and then, because they try and control the narrative in the PR when there's unrest, you get a situation where they gamble on qualifying for the Champions League.

00:09:58But the Celtic fans, if you're talking about a release of a statement from this board, not a cat's chance in hell, because every previous statement, Tam, Celtic fans have heard it all before.

00:10:11Well, it was difficult in the transfer.

00:10:13We tried to get that player.

00:10:14He didn't come.

00:10:15He changed his mind at the last minute.

00:10:17He was the only one we actually had in mind.

00:10:19Oh, well, we're going for several players, but they demanded more.

00:10:21So, we tried to get this player, but just at the last minute, it didn't work out and the transfer window closed, so we haven't really spent what we should have.

00:10:29But they've not done it this time, Peter.

00:10:31It'll be at the end of the window, Peter.

00:10:33If nothing comes around.

00:10:34Ruffy's talking about the now.

00:10:35There should be a statement going out on the website saying, listen, we're actively trying to get players in.

00:10:39And you spoke about Celtic having £100 million in the bank.

00:10:42Great.

00:10:42Celtic supporters don't care about that, Peter.

00:10:44No, I agree with you.

00:10:44They could have £100 billion in the bank.

00:10:46They don't spend it.

00:10:47So, it doesn't matter how much money Celtic have got in the bank.

00:10:50The Celtic supporters want to see new players in.

00:10:52They want to see money getting spent, and it's not been happening.

00:10:54I think they're £21 million in profit this window, you know, with the add-ons and selling Coon and all that.

00:11:00And they've hardly spent a bean.

00:11:01Well, they haven't spent a bean.

00:11:03So, I'll look at it and I totally appreciate the frustrations of our Celtic supporters at the minute.

00:11:09Yeah, listen, I absolutely get it.

00:11:14I mean, I get why they're upset, and I guess why they want some kind of enlightenment.

00:11:20But, you know, I just don't see that forthcoming.

00:11:24I know you think it's a good idea to communicate.

00:11:26Everybody thinks it's a good idea to communicate, Ruffey.

00:11:28But it ain't coming from that board.

00:11:30No, but...

00:11:30Because they work to a specific way.

00:11:33And as I said to Tam yesterday, Dermot Desmond calls the shots.

00:11:38Peter Lowell's put the blueprint in place.

00:11:40He has, and he's repeatedly told anybody who'll listen to him,

00:11:44that he doesn't actually get involved in the transfers.

00:11:47Peter Lowell doesn't need to get involved in the transfers because he's set the strategy out.

00:11:53The soldiers, the foot soldiers, are the ones who have to get on with the blueprint that he set out many, many years ago with Dermot.

00:12:01And they follow that strategy.

00:12:02And by the way, again, to offer balance on this, that is what they do.

00:12:08They make money.

00:12:09The problem is, you've had three knockout phases in the last, since 2003.

00:12:15Three, you've had about 10 or 11 times where they haven't actually made it to the group stages.

00:12:21And then you've had, you know, as well as the three second place finishes, you've had one where they finished third.

00:12:30And then, you know, I think 10 where they finished fourth.

00:12:34So, that's your barometer of success in it.

00:12:39Financially, it works really well and they deserve all the credit they can get.

00:12:44If you're a supporter and you're looking since 2003 and say, what about the ambition here?

00:12:48Is there ambition in Europe?

00:12:51You have to look at the stats.

00:12:53You have to look at the stats.

00:12:54And the narrative that comes out from Celtic is they cannot compete.

00:12:57And if you buy into that with them, then you just have to shut up and take the medicine and wait until they want to sign the players.

00:13:05But I would caveat that by saying, Brendan Rodgers, as a good coach, is more than capable of getting something out of these group of players at the moment in that second leg.

00:13:17But by the way, Ruffy, what a roll of the dice it is, eh?

00:13:2060 million and they'll blow it.

00:13:22It certainly is.

00:13:23But I think the scenario, while this is all we can get on, you know, Brendan Rodgers with his contract not saying, I'll sign another year, a rolling contract.

00:13:35And the way that going on and then him saying, like, well, it's nothing to do with me.

00:13:40I've done my bit.

00:13:41There's no players coming in.

00:13:42And now I just have to wait and see what the other people do.

00:13:45And what you're saying is the other people aren't doing enough.

00:13:49You know, so the supporters are divided now.

00:13:51And I think a lot of them are now swaying towards the Brendan Rodgers scenario of what are you doing?

00:13:56Are you, what kind of, what kind of threat are you putting on this board?

00:14:00Because he seems to have cut himself away from the board.

00:14:04Managers don't.

00:14:04Managers don't threaten boards, Ruffy.

00:14:06The thing about it is, what's the director of football saying?

00:14:09What's he doing?

00:14:11Who's he identifying?

00:14:12Who's he chasing?

00:14:13Who's he trying to sign?

00:14:14You know, it's just a total narrative of nothing.

00:14:19Nobody's saying anything.

00:14:21And when you get that scenario and then as well, as soon as a football result doesn't happen, that's when it all kicks off.

00:14:26That's why somebody needs to come clean and not tell them everything.

00:14:30Our players are in.

00:14:31Like, just come out and say, right, we'll get three players.

00:14:34Because if they get knocked out of the Champions League and they bring three players in, that's not going to solve it.

00:14:40Yeah, but it's what level of player that they bring in after a Champions League exit and where they think they need to spend money.

00:14:48And if you then suddenly drop to Europa League level, then you start to say to yourself, I mean, I thought Celtic and Rangers in the last couple of years, Tam, were Europa League level teams anyway.

00:14:59But because of what Brendan Rodgers achieved last season in this new format.

00:15:04Set a high bar for yourself?

00:15:05Well, he did.

00:15:06But I expected after the performance in Munich that they would back him.

00:15:12That they would actually say, do you know what?

00:15:14He's fulfilled the remit that he was brought back for.

00:15:16Because winning the league with Celtic at the moment should be a given, given their financial strength.

00:15:22And given the fact they've got the best coach in the country.

00:15:25But he actually achieved a remit.

00:15:28And I thought to myself, the standard of football he played in Germany that night was brilliant.

00:15:32Back him.

00:15:33Give him the two or three quality players.

00:15:35Give him them early.

00:15:36And suddenly he could get off to a flyer, not even have to worry about the second leg in Kyrie.

00:15:40You were actually talking here last week about when they throw out a B team.

00:15:45They don't even have an A team at the moment that you're thinking that Brendan Rodgers wants on the park.

00:15:51And now he's lost Alistair Johnson for 12 weeks.

00:15:53Yeah, and he's talking about promoting from within.

00:15:56I've seen that today.

00:15:57Talking about Anthony Ralson or the young boy.

00:15:59Is it Colby O'Donovan?

00:16:00And that's going to be a red rag to a belt to the Celtic fans as well.

00:16:02Because they'll be thinking, right, we need a right back now.

00:16:05You know, we need a starting right back.

00:16:07They don't see, I wouldn't think that Celtic supporters would see Anthony Ralson as a starter.

00:16:12So, yeah, you're right.

00:16:14They had to back him after the Munich game.

00:16:16They've had that all summer to do it.

00:16:18But, again, they've signed a couple of project players, cheap players.

00:16:22And they've sold one of the best players, Nicholas Coon.

00:16:24So, I get where the frustration's coming from.

00:16:26But it remains to be seen if they go through, Peter.

00:16:29And if they do go through, then the board will be jumping through the hoops.

00:16:34You know, they'll be thinking, we've saved money.

00:16:35We'll get through.

00:16:36That's what the panic has been about.

00:16:37If they don't, then I think they're going to see a major reaction from the Celtic supporters towards the board.

00:16:43Well, you and I, and Ruffy, highlighted two.

00:16:46Well, we highlighted one key area where we thought there was what I would call an inflammatory situation.

00:16:53And that was quite simply, nobody knows what Brendan was doing.

00:16:56I think he's going to leave at the end of the season.

00:16:59But he did make those comments as if, you know, I'm not here to stand still.

00:17:03That was one of his press room utterances, which is quite simply, I'm here to make the team better and to get players that will make the team better.

00:17:12So, the immediate question is, OK, September the 1st, let's ask you if you've got those two or three players,

00:17:18bearing in mind that everybody thought they were going to get past Kairat Almaty.

00:17:22Now, you've got two things that are what I call two lines in the sand, if there's such a thing, Ruffy.

00:17:28The first one is, if you don't get past Kairat Almaty, all hell lets loose.

00:17:33And then the board have got some serious answers.

00:17:36And then it's September 1st, depending on, even after that, the players that he gets, if at all,

00:17:43then you actually turn around and say to the manager, well, you're out of the Champions League,

00:17:48you're into the Europa League, you've got players, are they the standard that makes you want to commit?

00:17:53But the thing at this precise moment in time,

00:17:55the only people that really know what's going on behind the scenes are Brendan Rodgers and the board.

00:18:00He knows what the board are doing and the board know what he's doing.

00:18:03You know, it's just that the fans don't know which of the two of them is really 100% to blame in this whole scenario.

00:18:09Because both of them are washing their hands of the whole thing.

00:18:12Nobody's coming out.

00:18:13He's saying, well, I've done my bit, you know, I just need to wait until these players come through the door.

00:18:19But they're not saying anything.

00:18:20By the way, Ruffey, listen, Tam, this is Groundhog Day.

00:18:25You should send Bill Murray into the next press conference with Andy McDowell because, quite simply,

00:18:30this was the same thing being played out the last time before he eventually just basically said,

00:18:37get me out of here, get me to Leicester.

00:18:40And now I think he can't do that because I think, I don't think there's a way out for him.

00:18:45He can't get out, he can't get out the same way because Celtic fans...

00:18:49No, no, no, no, he's not going to leave.

00:18:51I think 100% he's going to leave at the end of the season.

00:18:54I think there's a situation maybe with the board.

00:18:57Know that he's not going to sign a new contract.

00:18:58And they're in 10 months' time.

00:19:00So you're saying that's the reason they're not giving him any more money?

00:19:03The other scenario could be, we've already gave you £20 million for two players and look at them.

00:19:08I'm just about to say that.

00:19:10So what are they saying, right, if you're indicating you're going to leave next year,

00:19:15we're not shelling you on our 20, 30 months.

00:19:19That's why we're now thinking all these things because nobody's coming out and telling anybody.

00:19:24I don't think you can work that way as a club.

00:19:26You've got to look at club first, manager coaches or coach coaches.

00:19:29Well, why don't you think the board have pushed the boat out to bring players in?

00:19:33Well, I just think that's their strategy, Ruffey.

00:19:34They do it every year.

00:19:36That's a...

00:19:37That'd be a strategy when other clubs...

00:19:39Wait a minute, we're telling lies.

00:19:40...actively all over, all over the blinking Britain are firing players in left, right and center.

00:19:43Am I making it up since 2003?

00:19:45No, they haven't done it, but that...

00:19:47Of course, so they revert to tight.

00:19:49So I don't know what everybody's...

00:19:50I don't know what everybody is getting upset about.

00:19:53If you're thinking you're going to get a press release or some kind of statement to justify the actions,

00:19:58you're barking up the wrong tree with that board.

00:20:01There's no statement coming.

00:20:02There's a game to come and the roll of the dice.

00:20:06And if they get past Cairo at Almaty, silence.

00:20:09And the silence will be, OK, you've now got a £60 million kitty,

00:20:13because believe me, it gets to that point.

00:20:15You've got a £60 million kitty.

00:20:18Buy the players.

00:20:19Give them the players.

00:20:20Only then do you get a little bit of, right,

00:20:23the next question after that is Brendan Rodgers.

00:20:25What are you going to do?

00:20:26So if you put yourself in the board's shoes right now,

00:20:29you look at the three players that they gave them last season,

00:20:31Trusty, Engels, Eder, none of them's playing there now,

00:20:35or one of them's playing Eder and he's out of form,

00:20:38spent over, what, £20 million on three players.

00:20:41Now Brendan's going and asking for another £20 million for three players

00:20:44and he's not going to be there at the end of the season.

00:20:46Do you think the board are going, wait a minute,

00:20:49he's not going to be here?

00:20:50Why have you just wasted £20 million on these three players?

00:20:51How have they wasted?

00:20:52By the way...

00:20:53Well, they're not playing, Peter.

00:20:54Well, they're not playing, but I don't believe he's signed them.

00:20:56I don't even believe...

00:20:58He's the final say on signings.

00:20:59I think he's sanctioned them, but I will tell you right now,

00:21:03I don't think the recruitment team that's in place

00:21:06is what he would like.

00:21:08I don't think they're doing their job.

00:21:10I think the players that they're bringing in,

00:21:12I mean, Eder's just not doing it,

00:21:14and you only have to look at the manager who puts Engels on the bench.

00:21:17So, I'm looking at him saying to myself,

00:21:19there are many players that have come into that building

00:21:21that he has not been flavour of the month.

00:21:23My God, he's just signed one,

00:21:24he said he's not good enough to play centre-half in Europe.

00:21:28I mean, honestly, what does that tell you?

00:21:30You don't sign a player,

00:21:31you don't sign a player and then come out

00:21:33and slaughter him in a press conference.

00:21:34Yeah, I know.

00:21:34Give me peace.

00:21:35I don't think that was probably his signing bit out there.

00:21:37Well, wait a minute.

00:21:38So, there's one or two that are,

00:21:39or one or two that are not.

00:21:40I don't think...

00:21:41I think the...

00:21:42Inamuri are talking about...

00:21:43Yeah.

00:21:43I think he's probably a project player.

00:21:46He probably is a project.

00:21:46It costs about £500,000.

00:21:48So, I'm talking about the actual big money

00:21:50that they've spent, Peter,

00:21:51on the three big signings.

00:21:52Here's what he had to say

00:21:53with regards to Alistair Johnson

00:21:56that Tam alluded to,

00:21:58which is, it's not great.

00:21:59He'll probably be out for about 12 weeks.

00:22:01Disappointing for him

00:22:02because he came back and started well.

00:22:05When you lose any player of this calibre,

00:22:06it's disappointing,

00:22:07but it provides an opportunity

00:22:09for someone else to step in.

00:22:11We have Tony Ralston

00:22:12and young Colby Donovan

00:22:14who has really impressed me

00:22:16in the last 12 months.

00:22:18My first look is always inside,

00:22:20but that's something that will gain more clarity

00:22:22in the next week or so.

00:22:25Okay.

00:22:27They're playing against Livingston.

00:22:29And, of course, David Martindale

00:22:30certainly mentioned to me

00:22:32that he was hoping Celtic could win

00:22:34over the two legs

00:22:34because that coefficient

00:22:36and Celtic qualifying

00:22:38for the group stages of the Champions League

00:22:40gives all the other clubs

00:22:41in the Premiership

00:22:42a huge financial boost

00:22:44because they get a payout from UEFA.

00:22:46So no wonder Davey and others

00:22:47are hoping that Rangers and Celtic

00:22:49can get into that group stage.

00:22:51But right now,

00:22:54David Martindale is talking to his squad,

00:22:56probably trying to work out

00:22:57how they can lay a glove on Celtic

00:23:00and whether he has enough players

00:23:02that can do them damage.

00:23:03We've got a really strong start

00:23:05in the living,

00:23:06whatever that's going to be,

00:23:07but we've also got real good options

00:23:09off the bench.

00:23:10So I'm pretty comfortable

00:23:12with what we've got going to Parkhead.

00:23:14We've got game changers within the squad,
