01:07Killian Phillips scores.
01:14That's a big chance for Ashcroft.
01:18It's Patrick.
01:32It's finally poised for the second leg.
02:37Next season, the prize on offer for either St Mirren or Partick Thistle.
02:41Scott Brown with us to help sift through the fallout.
02:47Let's get straight to the action.
02:49Commentary comes from Stuart Mitchell.
03:00The heat is on for this Monday night Premiership.
03:22Partick Thistle promotion when the final whistle blows tonight.
03:27Craig McLeish changes two from the first leg.
03:31Club captain O'Hara has moved to the bench.
03:33The bench with King.
03:35Richardson starts along with Young who scored here in St Mirren's final regular season game.
03:41Killian Phillips was the goal scorer in the first leg.
03:43The big news for Partick Thistle is that Ben Stanway returns after sitting out the first leg at Furhill.
03:50The Championship Player of the Year nominee provides a huge boost for the Jags.
03:54Chalmers is switched out low and could offer a spark.
03:58The back as a sub.
04:00Fitzpatrick scored the leveller in this tie on Thursday.
04:06St Mirren get the ball rolling.
04:10On what is a luscious surface.
04:14The sun shining down in Paisley.
04:25A long ball forward looks to set.
04:29Samuel through on goal.
04:30He'll have to hold up for some support.
04:33Out wide now.
04:35Slip through into the box.
04:37The sliding challenge.
04:41Mark Wilson has repeated that he and his players are ready for tonight.
04:45They could not wait for this one.
05:03Watt on the heels of Gogic.
05:05And Tony Watt takes the ball.
05:07Plenty arriving now.
05:09Stanway stabs.
05:10And that's the shot.
05:12Caressed in.
05:13By Fitzpatrick.
05:15He's asking for the corner.
05:21Now look how quickly Partick Thistle turned this one forward after.
05:27Tony Watt dispossessed.
05:28Alex Gogic who appeared to be in control.
05:34The St Mirren man getting in a tangle.
05:37Fitzpatrick looking back to nestle the ball in the bottom corner.
05:46Hane.
05:47Hane.
05:48Back for Richardson.
05:49He can't see a route forward.
05:51So he'll use the goalkeeper of Sinclair.
05:55That's given away.
05:57McTanzer will get the opportunity to pick up.
06:00Now Thistle have it again.
06:01Tony Watt, was he filled?
06:03Yes, says the referee.
06:07Freckleton gives the referee a stare.
06:12Tony Watt was important in that 1-1 draw on Thursday.
06:16And he's already playing a key role in the stadium he was formerly on loan at.
06:21Fitzpatrick on the left with the red boots.
06:23Looks ready.
06:25Goes for goal.
06:27Looking to catch St Mirren out.
06:29Almost everyone in the stadium was fooled.
06:33But that would be a delivery rather than a shot.
06:37Craig McLeish you sense will be disappointed with the start.
06:51McPherson stretching for it.
06:54Offers an apology.
06:56As the away fans are feeling positive.
07:02Samuel moves for Macbeth.
07:05And returns the pass.
07:08Watt spins.
07:11The strike stopped.
07:13And cleared away.
07:14A big block.
07:18So moving forward again Fitzpatrick.
07:23Just a touch too much pace on the ball for Reading.
07:29Watch close control open things up.
07:34And Samuel's effort didn't get through.
07:43Kogic wins unchallenged.
07:47Samuel.
07:50Fitzpatrick.
07:51Searching for the space.
07:59Rolled to Stanwy.
08:01Crawford asks for it.
08:02The link up.
08:03It's Crawford.
08:04Spilled by Sinclair.
08:06And scrambled away high.
08:08And scrambled away high.
08:11A moment of panic.
08:13For the Premiership club.
08:15Lovely.
08:16Partick Thistle play.
08:18Phillips stumbled.
08:19He wanted a free kick.
08:21Fitzpatrick continued with a lovely pass for Stanwy.
08:23He was aware where Crawford was.
08:27And the 1-2 was Samuel.
08:28Didn't result in a goal.
08:33It's the Jags support.
08:36Refused.
08:38They feel like their players have found their feet best in this first half.
08:45Dreckleton's header forward.
08:48Beth above Mandron.
08:51Phillips takes three ahead.
08:53Kaleem Phillips will drive forward.
08:55This is Mandron going for goal.
08:58He's always bending away.
09:01From Josh Clarke.
09:03Mikhail Mandron.
09:04Aware.
09:06St Mirren haven't really tested the Partick Thistle stopper too much.
09:12Devaney.
09:15An attempted block.
09:18St Mirren get possession again.
09:20Mandron can't squeeze the ball through for Phillips.
09:24Now Stanwy takes over for Thistle.
09:30Threaded through for Watt.
09:33Gogic across.
09:34That's a lovely move from Tony Watt.
09:36He looks up.
09:38McPherson strikes.
09:41With the aid of a deflection.
09:42Or perhaps two.
09:44It drops into the arms of Sinclair.
09:46Look at the drop of the shoulder here from Watt.
09:49He fools Gogic.
09:50But the pass.
09:53Not really having any conviction from Watt.
09:56McPherson tried to make the most of what was on offer.
10:02Campbell.
10:04Tanzer waits.
10:06Mandron the one used.
10:09Vani.
10:12Jaden Richardson.
10:14Mandron spins.
10:16The cutback.
10:17Phillips onto the left foot.
10:21Guided to the chest of Josh Clark.
10:24Who just scurried his feet across to collect.
10:28With that Mandron cutback I thought Phillips was going to shoot.
10:31A bit quicker than he did.
10:33To the left foot.
10:36Richardson.
10:38Now on the left side.
10:40Young.
10:40Getting involved.
10:43Stays calm.
10:45Finds Tanzer.
10:47Mandron.
10:48Juggles.
10:55Mandron here again.
10:58Driven for Campbell.
11:00Could Alan Campbell maybe have taken the ball in.
11:04There's a frustration in the home support.
11:08At times St Mirren are perhaps overplaying it in attack.
11:13Partick Thistle.
11:16Just struggled to come out on the same side.
11:20As they were in the first 45 minutes.
11:25Possibly expected.
11:28St Mirren shooting.
11:31For their safety.
11:33Looking to flex some muscles.
11:37Young.
11:38Finds the space.
11:40Big save from Clark.
11:42Terrific play.
11:44From Young.
11:48It just opens up but he still has so much to do.
11:52And he tries to caress the ball with power.
11:56Around Ashcroft.
11:58Strong save.
12:01From Josh Clark.
12:04St Mirren corner.
12:13Goal gets ready.
12:15Goal gets ready.
12:15Goal gets ready to compete.
12:17The header.
12:19Still there.
12:20Oh it's off the line.
12:22Is there still a chance?
12:24Blocked by Samuel.
12:26And now Partick Thistle.
12:28What to counter.
12:30Superb recovery from Tanzer.
12:32Superb recovery from Tanzer.
12:37Now has the fire been lit.
12:41Premiership playoff final second leg.
12:48Scott Tanzer.
12:49Scott Tanzer.
12:51Headed by Young.
12:52Into a dangerous area.
12:54Look how frustrated he is with himself.
12:58That's more like what the St Mirren support want to see here.
13:04Another look here.
13:05It's Tony Watt.
13:06That's an important job to do.
13:08He's battling away in there.
13:10And he just takes a couple of side steps towards the line.
13:12To head that one clear.
13:21What's that chance?
13:22A bit of a second half wake up call for Partick Thistle.
13:27Crawford.
13:29Samuel.
13:30Into space.
13:31Big save from Sinclair.
13:32And scrambled away.
13:36And Alex Samuel blows the cheeks.
13:40Brilliant movement from Samuel.
13:42And he asks a big question of the St Mirren goalkeeper.
13:46Who answers strongly.
13:49Eight seasons in the Premiership since winning the Championship in 2018 under Jack Ross.
13:54For St Mirren.
13:56They want to keep that run going.
14:02Logan looking to get it forward quickly.
14:04Samuel helps it on.
14:08It's Patrick and Freckleton.
14:10Come together.
14:18heavy challenge in the middle.
14:21Nick Walsh straight to the pocket.
14:24And a yellow card flashed.
14:27That's Scott Tanzer for the challenge on Crawford.
14:32A reckless one from the St Mirren man.
14:37Mandron for the Dawu.
14:40And Fitzpatrick says he got the ball.
14:44The Dawu brought down.
14:46That's a buddy's free kick.
14:48There's the Partick Thistle man.
14:50No reason to complain there.
14:52As time ticks towards 90.
14:54The anxiety.
14:56The anxiety increases.
14:59St Mirren look to settle the support down with a goal.
15:03And it's in.
15:08A massive moment for St Mirren.
15:11A massive moment for the team.
15:11A massive moment for the team.
15:15A massive moment for the team.
15:16A massive moment for the team.
15:16Celebrations ignited in the Smyth Stadium.
15:21Marcus Fraser.
15:23Buried.
15:25Amongst his teammates.
15:27They don't care who got the important touch.
15:32It's a crucial goal.
15:35Partick Thistle stunned. St Mirren won, Partick Thistle 0.
15:41What a finish.
15:45VAR is checking.
15:48It looks to come off the front of Fraser's shin.
15:51But it's angled impressively off the crossbar.
15:57What a finish.
15:58And maybe off the boot. It happened so fast.
16:02But will it count?
16:04That is now the question.
16:10John Beaton is on VAR duty tonight.
16:20The man who was wearing the armband for the majority of the game for St Mirren
16:24awaits the decision from the VAR control room.
16:33Goal awarded!
16:34Marcus Fraser only scored a single goal in the Premiership this season.
16:40That one could be vital to preserving Premiership status for the League Cup winners.
16:46There's the line.
16:50Lockery.
16:54Great feet again from Watt.
16:57Reading close by.
17:00Richardson in the way.
17:01Richardson in the way.
17:04Partick Thistle accept the corner kick.
17:13Strung header, pushed away.
17:17Lockery for Crawford.
17:20A single Partick Thistle goal.
17:24Could set up extra time.
17:30Litsosa.
17:33Makai Steven.
17:35A crunching challenge.
17:38From the goal scorer, Fraser.
17:41No doubt about that one.
17:50Chalmers strikes.
17:52Huge save from Sinclair.
17:56That was a vicious Logan Chalmers effort.
17:59And it may take a nick on the way through.
18:02Excellent goalkeeping.
18:04And it keeps St Mirren ahead.
18:06Ahead.
18:14Odowu.
18:16Attacking with Mandron.
18:18It's still rolling, Odowu.
18:21Devani.
18:23For O'Hara.
18:25Richardson.
18:28And on Tussles.
18:30Richardson takes over.
18:31Saved by Clarke.
18:34The Buddies want to put this one beyond all doubt.
18:38Richardson just forcing his way through there.
18:41Hoping Clarke could spill something.
18:46Five additional minutes.
18:48Five additional minutes.
18:52St Mirren looking for number two.
18:58Odowu.
18:59Odowu.
18:59The cutback.
19:01Blocked.
19:04Thistle surviving the match.
19:07But they have work to do.
19:09Odowu.
19:10Full of energy since coming on.
19:13He just charges around the pitch.
19:16Gogic.
19:21Hammered upfield.
19:24Samuel prevented from chasing.
19:27Comes together with Gogic.
19:30The yellow card.
19:33Is out.
19:34Gogic tries to calm things down with Samuel.
19:39Suggestions of an elbow.
19:42The yellow card.
19:44Shown to both.
19:46Gogic trying to shield.
19:51And Samuel gets frustrated.
19:59They're friends now though.
20:02Well, at least Gogic is.
20:10And they may only have a minute.
20:12And not much more.
20:14To try and level.
20:16And force extra time.
20:18Samuel.
20:19Mackay Steven.
20:21Was he brought down?
20:23Let's Sosa.
20:26Now the free kick awarded.
20:29Well.
20:30A couple of things to look at here.
20:33Right in the dying embers of the game.
20:36Mackay Steven.
20:38Oh, Freckleton.
20:39Oh, Freckleton.
20:40Goes to ground and gets the ball.
20:42Let's have another look.
20:45Let's have another look.
20:46A great challenge from the St Mirren defender.
20:49Partick Thistle.
20:51Partick Thistle.
20:52Still have.
20:53A huge.
20:54Crucial.
20:55Chance.
20:57Right at the end.
20:58Of the five additional minutes that were signalled.
21:01It's now or never for the Jags.
21:04Who will it be?
21:06It's Turner off the wall.
21:13Cleared out.
21:15There is the full time whistle.
21:18St Mirren survive.
21:21Craig McLeish has done it as interim boss.
21:26The defensive warriors embrace.
21:30Marcus Fraser with a huge moment.
21:33He's been playing the last few weeks against advice through injury.
21:37Leading St Mirren in Paisley.
21:40More Partick Thistle pain.
21:42It finishes.
21:44In the Premiership playoff final.
21:47Second leg.
21:48St Mirren one.
21:49Partick Thistle nil.
21:51St Mirren win.
21:522-1 on aggregate.
21:56I'm delighted for the players and for the fans.
21:58For the club in general.
22:00The remit when I took over the role was to stay in the league.
22:03We'd have liked to have avoided this type of situation.
22:05But we've managed to do that.
22:08I'm just delighted for the fans and the group of players.
22:10I spoke to the players before the game.
22:12We wanted to make sure that they're remembered as legends of this club.
22:15After the achievements this season and winning the cup.
22:16We didn't want that black mark against their name.
22:18I probably wanted to win so much obviously to stay in the league.
22:21But just not for that League Cup win to get forgotten about.
22:23Because it quite easily could have.
22:25And obviously you have a downfall maybe going down.
22:29So brilliant to rectify that.
22:31And we stayed in the league.
22:32And then obviously we can look back on the season now.
22:34As probably a positive one.
22:35With a League Cup in the bag.
22:36And then staying in the league as well.
22:37When do you start maybe to talk about your future here?
22:41I imagine Keith will probably start to have conversations about that over the next few days.
22:45The bit was just, we kind of spoke about just take care of everything.
22:50Take care of everything.
22:50And whatever the outcome is, the club will plan their future from there.
22:54I've just been in a privileged position that they allowed me the kind of responsibility and the faith.
22:58And they put trust in me to take the team on.
23:01Even I wouldn't be standing here if it wasn't for Steven Robinson giving me opportunities up to that point as
23:05well.
23:06So I have to thank him for this opportunity.
23:09And if I get the opportunity to lead the group on, my biggest bit is make sure we're never in
23:13that type of game again.
23:17Congratulations to St Mirren. Commiserations to Partick Thistle.
23:21St Mirren will be in the Premiership next season.
23:24Scott Brown, were they worthy winners for you on night?
23:29It wasn't the best watch in the world, shall we say.
23:32But know what, Marcus Fraser's goal is brilliant.
23:37Great ball in the box.
23:39And look at determination.
23:40Just the wall to get there and who knows where it hits his shin, his ankle, his foot.
23:45He's not really bothered.
23:46It hits the back of the net and that's the main thing.
23:49Look at Craig McLeish there, Scott.
23:51He's obviously come in after Steven Robinson left the club.
23:54It's been a bit of a rollercoaster for him.
23:56And the question is, do you think he will be the St Mirren manager at the start of next season?
24:02Will he be giving the summer the chance to recruit his own players?
24:05It was always going to be hard for him after the League Cup win.
24:08And how good a job Steven Robinson has done over the last three, four years in Europe.
24:35And then coming into this, they're not really used to that in the last couple of years, the bunch of
24:42lads they're used to fighting for that European,
24:44trophy, top six.
24:47So, look, it's hard and I enjoy watching his football teams.
24:54He just needs to manage to get a few more points on because you'll feel today that he's done a
25:00good enough job that you can now put his name in the hat for it.
25:03And all the players and everyone talk really, really highly of him.
25:07So, I think he's a really good coach and it's a learning curve for him, which everyone needs that opportunity.
25:13Great scenes at the end with Marcus Fraser and his son, obviously, celebrating that huge, huge victory.
25:19And it wasn't the first big goal Marcus Fraser scored for St Mirren this season.
25:24He got the first one in the League Cup final as well.
25:26First and foremost, Scott, it was definitely a free kick, wasn't it?
25:29Oh, 100%, yeah.
25:34The ball just gets ran over.
25:36Little bit of a bad touch from Fitzpatrick at that point in time.
25:43And he just claps him just in the time.
25:46But, look, Mark's ball in here is fantastic as well.
25:50And, look, the determination of Marcus to try and get there.
25:54It's a fantastic finish, but it's about the ball as well.
25:58And, look, for me, I do think Alex Samuel can follow in a little bit quicker as well with Marcus.
26:08You can see it here.
26:09It's the next footage.
26:10You see it.
26:11Little bit of sharpness.
26:13You can see he's standing, he's waiting, and Marcus just goes that little second just ahead.
26:18It's determination to try and get there, and it's brilliant.
26:20It's a great finish, but what a ball as well into that area.
26:24And, look, no goalie saving that.
26:27It's a striker's finish.
26:28He times his run to perfection as well, clearly, as the VAR line's confirmed.
26:32Yeah, we believe they may.
26:35I think we should probably, yeah.
26:38We have to, we have to, and what a big moment.
26:40There we have it, yeah.
26:41But to win a game, we kind of thought it was going to be a set play or something special
26:45because there wasn't too many clear-cut chances throughout.
26:48But you can see how tight it was.
26:50You can see all the lads nervous, and as soon as Nick Walsh points to the spot, I'm sure there's
26:54relief from every fan in that ground for St Mirren.
26:57A hundred percent.
26:58Absolutely good to see it.
26:59It was a night of tense emotions throughout, and you'd have to say, in the end, Scott, just was it
27:06a case of maybe a bit more strength and depth overall from St Mirren?
27:10They kept on going to the end, they brought a lot of people off the bench, obviously, to see out
27:14the victory.
27:15Yeah, I think the subs were a huge impact, if I'm honest, and St Mirren had a few misplaced passes
27:21throughout the whole game, and even Mark coming on later on, and it was just calmness on the ball.
27:26And that made a huge importance, especially later on in the game, and determination to hold out as well, because
27:33Partick did have a couple of chances, they just weren't ruthless enough.
27:35And how good a season is this for St Mirren, would you say, Scott? They wouldn't have wanted to be
27:40involved in this match, obviously, but they've got the League Cup, they've got the Premiership status. Is it a good
27:46season?
27:46They'll be disappointed with where they finish in the league, but it's a fantastic season. Look, they beat Celtic in
27:51the Cup Final, and it's not often they win trophies.
27:54So for those lads there that are in that squad, they'll go down in the history books, and they need
28:00to try and make the most of it, because it's nine years now that they're in the Premier League, which
28:05is incredible for a team when Jack Ross brought them up that nobody thought would survive that long.
28:11Yeah, well done to St Mirren. Commiserations to Partick Thistle. Let's hear from the Partick Thistle manager, Mark Wilson.
28:19Mark, commiserations to you. I know this will be a tough one. Can you sum up your emotions for us?
28:23Just obviously really raw. A lot put into the game tonight, the two legs, the full season, and it ends
28:31so abruptly, just like that, but if you're asking me inside, I'm so proud to be the head coach of
28:38this side.
28:38It says that to the guys, what they've built this season has been something extraordinary. Real connection with the fan
28:44base. The fans have bought into it, the fans have came in their numbers.
28:47You see the ovation they get at the end, and that's built all the way through the season, so I
28:52couldn't be prouder. I think it's been the best group that I've ever been involved in.
28:55Like I was saying to the team there, when I came in, the team was just jointed. The club didn't
29:01know what direction we were going in. Season ticket sales weren't great, but it's just all transformed because of that
29:08group of players in there.
29:09So we built the squad as the seasons went on. It's important that we keep the core of that, we
29:14strengthen, and we come back for first day of the season better prepared to actually go and try and win
29:20the league.
29:20And I think everybody would thank me for getting these play-offs out their way. It's great to be involved
29:28in them. It's exciting, but I think it's the past four or five years we've been here, and it's been
29:32cruel.
29:33So it is. There'd be some prize next year if we can go and just win the league.
29:38Yeah, we followed the Partick Thistle story all season, and they did push St Johnstone hard. And this evening, Scott,
29:44especially in the first half, they created plenty of opportunities. Maybe the better side, actually, in the first half.
29:50Yeah, I'd say definitely a better side. And even that, that's one shot they've had on target earlier on with
29:58Young there. Lovely feet, great touching, good finish there.
30:03It was a comfortable save for Josh Clark. And this is the one. This is your striker clearing it off
30:08the line. And watch, this is your other striker there.
30:11Two of them. Determination to make sure they try and keep a clean sheet, which is exceptional. Tony Watt today
30:16was very, very good.
30:17He was. I thought everything that happened that was positive in the first half came through Tony.
30:22And that's just because he's a fantastic player. He understands the game as well. And you can see why he's
30:28been at a top level club as well.
30:29Absolutely. In terms of Partick Thistle for next season, I think probably for a lot of people they exceeded expectations
30:36this season, Scott.
30:39But they did give a good showing throughout. And you do wonder about next season. Are they favourites for the
30:48championship? Or will it be Dunfermline Athletic who obviously made it to the Scottish Cup final?
30:52I think Dunfermline is going to be right up there. You've got Livingston coming down. Yeah. So two big clubs.
30:57And look, Partick, as Mark was talking about, if he can keep the core of those lads together, because they
31:03have got a really, really good squad.
31:04And look, they're missing a couple of lads as well that were on loan it from St Mimmon. So that's
31:11a huge impact on their team.
31:12But at the same time, look, they want to make sure they're stronger as well. And this is just fantastic.
31:18I love that for Logan Chalmers.
31:19Sometimes the good old fashioned way, put it down as much power as you can get behind it.
31:25Scott, thank you very much for your efforts this season. Yes, that is it as we draw the curtain down
31:31on Sports Scene's 50th anniversary.
31:34It has been quite the season. Plenty of drama all the way. And plenty to look forward to as well
31:42with the World Cup just around the corner.
31:43From all of us on the Sports Scene team, good night.
32:07We'll see you next time.
