00:33Showtime Championship Boxing
00:58Welcome to the Silver Star Hotel and Casino in
01:17Philadelphia Mississippi for a Cinco de Mayo doubleheader it's a night of celebration
01:33as Mexico proudly commemorates a national victory on the state in 1862 over the forces from France
01:40Showtime joins in the festivities by presenting one of boxing's elite who's just one step away
01:45from major stardom in our main event undefeated Olympic gold medalist Joel
01:49Casamayor will defend his WBA super featherweight title against seasoned veteran Edwin Santana
01:55and in our co-feature you'll see unbeaten Alex Trujillo go against Emmanuel Clotty in a battle
02:02of junior welterweights
02:04in the United States we bring you inside to the conference center here at the Silver Star as Cuban
02:09expatriate Joel Casamayor with the impressive record of twenty four no fifteen knockouts grabs tonight's
02:14spotlight the slick southpaw with blazing speed looks to get one more notch on his championship belt
02:20before the big payoff a much anticipated fight with Acelino Freitas
02:24in the ring side from Philadelphia Mississippi now originally tonight's card was to feature
02:33two of the best of boxing's red hot 130 pound division but just four days ago undefeated WBO champ
02:40Acelino Freitas of Brazil withdrew from his title defense against number seven contender
02:45Laszlo Bogner claiming he was suffering from a flu virus and that he also had personal difficulties
02:50so instead of putting his title and perfect record on the line tonight he'll possibly get a free pass
02:56to a unification showdown with WBA champion Joel Casamayor tentatively set for July 14th it doesn't
03:03seem very fair to Casamayor who has to risk his title and big money fight with Freitas against veteran
03:09Edwin Santana and keep in mind while a win is certainly expected the usually ultra sharp Casamayor did show
03:16vulnerability in his last fight now Casamayor advances to face Freitas it conjures up images of their
03:22predecessors Alexis Arguello and Julio Cesar Chavez the Casamayor Freitas super fight promises
03:28fireworks not seen at 130 pounds since Cornelius Boza Edwards Bobby Chacon and Rafael Bazooka
03:35Limon were duking it out almost two decades ago let's take a look at the list of 130 pound champions
03:42with three of the four undefeated including tonight's headliner Casamayor Freitas the only
03:46current world champ with a perfect knockout record all 29 wins by KO for the WBO champ but reportedly
03:52business problems and a turbulent romantic relationship that's been highly publicized in
03:57his native Brazil have sidelined the champion WBC champ Floyd Mayweather jr 25-0 with 19 KOs regarded by
04:06many as the best at 130 recently dominated the rugged Diego Corrales and is scheduled to meet
04:11Carlos Hernandez later this month the IVF title holder is 19-1 Steve Forbes off a back injury will
04:18next defend against mandatory top-ranked contender John Brown and with that let me bring on my ringside
04:25partner former world champion Bobby Ches and Bobby how would you react if you were in Joel Casamayor's
04:31shoes well Steve I personally wouldn't let anything get in the way of my thought process and paying
04:35attention to the task at hand and that is Santana here tonight at the same time this could also keep
04:40Casamayor sharp be good for him while Freitas is on the shelf maybe getting a little bit stale even
04:45after having said that it could also tick me off a little bit because Freitas didn't see fit to come
04:50here and work the co-promotion toward the unification bout but you know what you don't want to get inside
04:55a fighter's head trust me you don't it's a bad place to go and no one knows what they're thinking
04:59no question about that now an added development WBO President Francisco Valkersel supported Freitas
05:05following the sudden cancellation there'll be no sanctions against him but he must face a southpaw
05:10fighter in June before his July 14th fight with the lefty Casamayor promoter Dan Gushin of America
05:16Presents told me you can't order a fighter to fight a tuna for more on the story let's get it over to
05:23Tim Smith Tim thanks Steve I don't know about that southpaw but we got one right here with us
05:29Joel Casamayor is here he's ready he's primed and I just want to know joe if you are upset that
05:36Arcelino Freitas does not have to put his title on the line tonight and you do
05:41he says I'm not mad at all I did my job I came to do my job and and win tonight and fight tonight
06:03and on July 14th he's gonna have to see my face okay thank this is uh Louis de Cubas who is the manager for
06:09uh Joel Casamayor uh Joel Casamayor and uh you are taking this fight against Santana now how much did
06:17you have a chance to study him and what do you expect from Santana tonight?
06:21How long did you have to study Santana and what are you waiting for Santana tonight?
06:25Well I was waiting for Santana six weeks for Santana and well I'm going to do my
06:30fight that I've always done my technical and tactical and I'm not going to hurry and I have
06:35I've been training for this fight for seven weeks I'm definitely you know train uh you know for Santana
06:48style you know but I'm going to go do my job and I'm going to do what I always do you know technician
06:52uh you know great left hand right hand jab and we're going to we're going to go ahead and uh you
06:57know do our do our job okay thank you very much Joel well comedian WC Fields said all things
07:03considered he'd rather be in Philadelphia Freitas doesn't feel that way Steve but hey we have our
07:08man here tonight uh Joel Casamayor and he's a one-man band and he's going to close the show he says
07:14all right Tim and Casamayor also told us yesterday if the summer unification showdown is jeopardized by this

07:55alex trujillo of puerto rico risking his unbeaten record against former ghana champion emmanuel cloddy
08:01for a fringe title called the iba junior welterweight championship
08:07emmanuel cloddy originally from akra ghana which produced one of the all-time great warriors azuma
08:12nelson the reason cloddy entered boxing his inspiration won the ghana lightweight and junior lightweight
08:17belts after a successful amateur career one and one in the u.s now based in atlanta after fighting
08:22out of england his two losses out of 18 fights a disputed split decision to colin dunn and a technical
08:28decision to daryl tyson bobby while he's had only one fight in each of the last four years he last
08:35fought just 22 days ago winning a 10-round decision but overall the inactivity has to affect
08:41things like timing and sharpness yeah well steve his conditioning and his stamina that can be taken
08:45care of in the gym due to right training but sharpness and timing needs to be perfected by
08:49fighting regularly and staying in the zone you can't get that always in the gym now he's been
08:54off for a while so he could be a bit still even if he's in great shape undefeated alex trujillo of
09:01puerto rico we saw him on the tyson galata card october of uh 2000 close unanimous decision over jose
09:08luis juarez came off the canvas to uh to win that fight after being knocked down on the fourth two and
09:14oh with a knockout since a solid candidate to win the gold at the 96 atlanta olympics but
09:19before his first bout lost his temper slugged the teammate fracturing his hand he won the vacant
09:25nabf super lightweight belt with a grueling decision over previously unbeaten mark suarez
09:32is he a legit prospect bobby well steve on paper he seems to be a legitimate talent he seems to have
09:38everything it takes to make the transition to a professional world champion but we've seen
09:42many excellent amateurs not make the transition all the way through to a title right now only time
09:47will tell called the next superstar from puerto rico by the man you just heard from with tim smith louis
09:53de cubas that may be a bit of a stretch but we'll see what he's got in him let's check the numbers as
09:59we go to the tail of the tape both almost the exact same age two inch height advantage for trujillo the
10:06reach identical at yesterday's way in trujillo right on claude just under and tonight trujillo 147
10:12and claude 145 and the key rules for this marginal championship no standing eight count no three
10:19knockdown rule a fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round if an accidental headbutt occurs
10:24before the end of the fourth it's a technical draw if it happens after the end of four they go to the

12:21losses he has 12 wins coming by way of knockout introducing emmanuel sleek clotty
12:28and his opponent across the ring on my right fighting out of the red corner this 12 round
12:37championship bout wearing white trunks with black trim hailing from catano puerto rico he weighed in
12:44at the limit of 140 pounds even he is undefeated in his campaign to the ring with 20 wins no losses 15
12:52wins coming by way of knockout ladies and gentlemen here is the undefeated nabf super lightweight champion
12:59known as alexander the great crujillo
13:08once again a referee in charge elmo adolf now to give instructions 12 rounds of boxing schedule
13:16all right alex come in here gentlemen i've spoken to both of you about what these rules are tonight
13:22i expect you to obey me out here this is okay anything up in here anything up in here is okay
13:28pay attention to me out here i don't want to have anything but a good clean bout is that understood
13:33thank you shake hands come out fighting bobby says we're set for your keys to victory okay steve
13:40let's start with alex trujillo first off he's got good height and reach definitely should use them
13:45and also good combinations thought he's going to come right to him and lastly that left hook to the body
13:50one of his signature punches
13:56for cloudy he needs to establish the jab he likes to throw a lot of punches but he works off that jab
14:01next he's gonna have to outwork trujillo all the way around use his good endurance and he also has a
14:06pretty good left hook of his own he's going to be looking to land it off
14:09the body came in dancing throughout his ring walk entertaining with the fans they loved it we hope his
14:17footwork is as good during he certainly has rhythm steve yes trujillo experienced patient and poise he of
14:24the white trunks with the black trim a pressure fighter works the body well nice quick jab his major weapon is
14:31a big left hook nine of his 15 ko's in the first round defense although it didn't look that bad in
14:38his last fight against juarez generally a weakness he can be hit and he does get careless on occasion
14:45well i'll tell you noticed in his last fight there were many times when he was going backward he didn't
14:48fight as well going backward and right now cloudy seems to want to establish that he's going to be
14:53aggressive so it could be an interesting night for you here cloudy's strengths are punching power
14:57poison confidence but only four fights over the past four years that's one per year
15:05there's just no way to stay sharp being that inactive even though he did fight fairly recently
15:11only one of his 12 ko's in the first round also cloudy's chin a question mark even though he's never been
15:19dropped trejillo told us he hadn't seen cloudy fight that he'll study him in the first round size him up
15:29figure out what to do he does know that cloudy is the kind of guy who comes right to you he's very busy
15:36and that the trio does well against those types of fighters right now both men being very cautious
15:41showing almost an undue amount of respect for one another's punching power yet no big bombs have been
15:46thrown cloudy feels he has the ability to outwork trejillo calls his best weapons to jab and left
15:53hook very hungry hoping this is a springboard to a title shot as does trejillo keep them up keep your
16:00punches up he'll actually more comfortable and quicker at 135 but didn't want to pass up this
16:05opportunity for a title even though it's 140. cloudy said something similar in an interview with him
16:10steve he said he really would rather be 135 he wins this he'll try and defend it a couple times but he
16:15wants to go back and use this as a springboard for a shot at 135. body stepping up the pace a bit low blow
16:25there by trujillo being cautioned by elmo adolf trujillo said that he has to combine his hooks a
16:32combination of left hooks downstairs and upstairs with straight right hands also use the height to
16:37his advantage he's starting to heat up a little bit both of them letting go with both hands a little more
16:42more fluid there's that big left hook to the body we're talking about with trujillo that is one of
16:49his best weapons you know offensively he is more effective when he's coming forward aggressively while
16:54throwing hooks and combinations pretty good right hand that got in there by a cloudy to the head
17:00head final seconds of the opening round scheduled for 12 our translator tonight is don frenzy don't run
17:23around the ring don't chase him around the ring close range close range close range watch the right
17:33hand coming over the top lots of jabs lots of jabs breathe in breathe in breathe in
17:40breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe in breathe
18:10He's got to use that jab more back to the basics we're here in Philadelphia misses shipping now. Let's go
18:16Huge chandelier as you just saw above the ring. Let's hope it stays up there
18:22round two
18:23That would be bad. Yes
18:27I could shake things up. I think Clyde's corner was very correct in saying use that jab more
18:31He's got to work off it. That's his way in his way in to close the gap close the height difference which will heal and that's how he sets up his combinations
18:37So he'll very deliberate cautious and calculated the last time we saw him
18:44Especially after he was dropped in the final seconds around for that'll make you cautious
18:48That was a long left hook to the head in his last fight. He barely beat the count and
18:55Averted disaster when that kind of thing does stick with you Steve
18:58When you get hit like that it makes you almost lose the fight with one shot like that it really stick in your head and it'll make you worry
19:05But he basically went on to control the the pace of the rest of the way and won by a close unanimous
19:12Decision over the number 10
19:15WBC rated Jose Luis Suarez
19:20Right now he's got a manual party from Ghana in front of
19:23He's being very calculating here, too
19:25He's not wasting much energy is to you and you know
19:28Clotty talked about out working to really he's not really working enough now
19:32He takes too long in a round to get heated up and
19:34Half of the rounds gone and he's lost a half that's gone because he's not working to heal at all
19:40Both of clotty's losses by decision. He's 16 and 2 12 knockouts
19:48Trujillo coming on with a big left hook to the Joe
19:51Body showing the decent chin right there. I was a nice left hook and then a wild swing of the best son a left hook attempt by Claudia
19:57Glad he said the fight with Colin Dunn
19:59He felt he was outright robbed what it was his fight and won it but again the judges saw it differently
20:06That was over in england
20:09One of his
20:12Two losses
20:14Trujillo 20 and 0 15 knockouts he's been down two times but
20:18His camp insists it was actually one time that the knockdown versus mark suarez last year for the nabf title was a slip
20:28Trujillo came back to win that on points
20:32Right here at this venue in philadelphia mississippi
20:37A lot of head movement now by cloudy
20:40Throwing the jab not following it up
20:42And cloud is also the type of fighter even more so than true
20:45Does not fight as well going backward if he's going backward to real almost can't lose the fight
20:50And his defense is a problem as mentioned before he's vulnerable
20:55And he is getting tagged by Trujillo
21:01The knock on Trujillo is that he lacks consistency and does not always utilize his skills
21:08Has not realized his potential as of yet good finish by Trujillo as cloudy continues to hit after the bell
21:16The knock on Trujillo is that he wants to hit after the bell
21:22Again our interpreter don francis
21:37Watch the right hand watch the right hand
21:39The only weapon he has the right hand
21:41Be careful
21:49Watch that Trujillo left hook
21:51He catches cloudy coming right there with a nice solid left hook gets his attention but cloudy holds up well
21:56He ended around it became a little bit of give and take by both men here at the end a sloppy right hand
22:04But cloudy's throwing it over the top quite a bit
22:06And Trujillo trying to fight back as the referee hears the bell and the other fighters assuming the fighters don't seem to hear the bell
22:14Bobby four fights in four years for for cloudy
22:18How do you pace yourself for a fight under those conditions?
22:21You know again steve you can only do so much in the gym
22:23But i believe that he had to have the right work and he had to train the proper way and you can simulate the fight as much as you like
22:29It's not quite the same as fight night
22:31Gloves are different you have headgear and sporting corners are not fight partners it's just different
22:36You may have noticed on your screen this a very small ring 16 and a half by 16 and a half
22:43Small ring usually favors the puncher you noticed a lot of silver dots all over cloudy's body i can't figure out what that is
22:50It looks like it has paint on it see it
22:53It might have something to do with the tribe from the god tribe in ghana
23:01Nice left hook a whacking left hook off the head by Trujillo
23:08Beautiful double up uppercut left hook body and head by Trujillo and he's ready to go
23:14Trujillo got hit in the temple with a left hook and then a right hand and his leg came out from under him
23:19Plotty being dismantled here in round three on very unsteady legs he buckled and nearly went
23:26That was a beautiful left hook right underneath the rib cage and the second one a little south
23:45And no one saw it Trujillo is doing what he told us he would do upstairs and downstairs with hooks and now a straight right hand that sent cloddy's head back
23:55That left hook was blocked by the right elbow with cloddy
24:00Trujillo's speed is being a factor too he's getting to the punches first he's landing first and countering well
24:05Give your punches up balance. Trujillo looking very sharp here in round three controlling the action
24:15You see in there cloddy can't just lay his head from there on his hands
24:18He's got to work. He's got to put some punches together body and head
24:21You see that cloddy throws from too far out his right hand especially I think throws from considerably too far out and not on balance
24:31He's not turning his punches in while he's balancing he walked into a jab he walked right into a step jab by Trujillo
24:37That got the crowd going what I call a shotgun jab
24:40Not looking sharp and that may be the product of so few fights
24:50About three weeks ago
24:52Trujillo scoring almost at will here with rights and lefts to the body and to the head
25:00Cloddy coming on just a little bit here at the end of the round
25:02But not enough and what he's landing is not laying this cleanly as all the punches
25:06Two heels one except for that right hand there you go combination to the head by cloddy who has gotten his wake-up call
25:11Let's see if he can sustain it
25:13into the next round
25:20Uh uh where's the stool baby look
25:24Hooks to the body hooks to the head
25:27He's going low
25:29Stay still stay still
25:31Stay still
25:33Stay still be calm be calm be calm relax
25:35Relax
25:35Relax
25:35Relax
25:36Let me follow
25:37Swallow swallow
25:39Early on Trujillo got cloddy in a little bit of trouble
25:42Diggs that left hooked her body there's a right hand on top of the head and a left to the temple
25:46That two punch combination to the head seemed to hurt cloddy severely you'll see it again there's
25:52Temple shot and there's a
25:54Another one on top of the head they and they do hurt steve i've been hit on top of the head they do hurt
25:58At the end of the round which seems to be the pattern cloddy comes on
26:03He also lands a very good right hand here and gets the attention
26:07Of Trujillo and I think he hurt Trujillo you can see in his eyes a little bit
26:14And we're into round four now
26:16But he did connect a couple of times
26:18Near the end of round three but he was in in trouble for most of that round
26:23He needs to start earlier in the round he waits till halfway point or two-thirds before he starts to turn it on
26:28And by then he's lost up so much of the round that if Trujillo can just hold him off part of the last third
26:34It's his round
26:37Body in the green yellow and red trunks former gana lightweight and junior lightweight champion now living in atlanta, georgia
26:44there's that right hand again
26:50Trujillo out of petano puerto rico
26:53And the white with the black trim
26:5520 and 0 15 knockouts Trujillo ploddy 16 and 2 12 ko
27:05Claudia with more of a range fighting jab it's not very purposeful it's not very powerful it's not going to hurt you
27:11He's just kind of working in behind it to to get and gain some measurements but it's not a good jab
27:23He's just a good jab
27:34We approached the midway point of round four it's scheduled for
27:37a 12 for something called the IBA junior welterweight title.
27:42More of the alphabet soup by the last.
27:44No question.
27:51The pace has slowed here now.
27:53This entire round, you notice that Trujillo has backed up.
27:57The entire round, he has gone backward,
27:59and Claudio has been the aggressor from the very, very beginning.
28:02Better round for Claudio all the way.
28:05I'm not sure he's winning it yet, but a better round.
28:07Trujillo was awfully busy in that last round,
28:09could have punched himself out,
28:12and now just trying to get his second win.
28:15For the most part, Trujillo landing here with a right cross.
28:18No, no, no, no, no.
28:20I'll push his head.
28:21He's flat-footed, and Claudio on his feet, dancing around,
28:26but it's not getting him anywhere.
28:28Another thing, too, even when Claudio throws him in punches,
28:31he's not more accurate, he's not outlanding the punches
28:34that Trujillo throws are harder, and they're landing more efficient.
28:36Trujillo trying to end this on one punch, too, telegraphing,
28:40and back comes Claudio with a couple of left hooks to the jaw.
28:45Some pretty fair exchanges here towards the end of round four.
28:51But again, it's Trujillo backpedaling,
28:53and as Bobby knows how difficult it is to fight on backwards.
29:00And again, Claudio throwing that right from too far out.
29:03Shigiri Robinson and Muhammad Ali were kind of the only two men
29:06who could kill you going in the other direction.
29:10All right, let's go.
29:10Break it out.
29:11It would be actually part of their game plan.
29:12Break it out.
29:12No, no, no, no, no.
29:13No, no.
29:14Go ahead.
29:15And round four on the books.
29:16Let's go.
29:27Breathe deep, breathe deep.
29:29Breathe deep.
29:30소리가 stay.

29:46You can't absorb that many rights, you can't absorb that many rights.
29:50Move the head, move the head.
29:54Keep breathing.
29:58Come on champ, come on champ.
30:02Come on champ.
30:06Keep your distance, keep your distance.
30:10Don Franci, our translator.
30:14Victor Ortiz, the trainer of the corner with Trujillo since Alex was a kid.
30:26As we enter into round 5, Trujillo hoping to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with his 21st win and perhaps 16th in the knockout.
30:34Once again we see Claudius starting off faster, starting the round off, not only being aggressive but landing at no punches.
30:42Working that jab but no right.
30:48Giving Trujillo an opening.
30:54Trujillo looking for that big counter.
30:58Yeah he seems to be waiting on maybe one punch or one counter punch.
31:02Looking to end this really hurt Claudius with one shot and it's not going well.
31:06Meanwhile he is eating a lot of leather.
31:08The result of that jab by Claudius.
31:12Claudius getting a little braver now.
31:14The glitter by the way.
31:26The result of the fact that America presents the promoters here spray painted.
31:32The gloves of Claudius.
31:36And little particles are falling all over the place.
31:38Is that what that is?
31:40I was wondering how that silver stuff wound up all over.
31:44There you have it.
31:48Not sure how safe that is to get into the fighter's eyes.
31:56Nice right hand by Claudius after a double jab.
31:58He needed to throw the hook.
32:00There was a perfect combination to unload a couple more punches.
32:03Claudius peppering the head of Trujillo with the jetpack.
32:07With only about a minute to go in this round, I think the first two minutes have been dominated mostly by Claudius.
32:12Wait, wait, wait.
32:13Pay attention to me, all right?
32:15Don't do that, all right?
32:16Let's go box.
32:22Under a minute left in round five.
32:24Scheduled for 12.
32:25Now Claudius going to the uppercuts.
32:28But mostly blocked.
32:31He was considerably busier here and outworked Trujillo this entire round.
32:35And up until this point in time I can't see a reason to give this round to Trujillo.
32:39Trujillo seems to have tired somewhat after opening up stronger in the first four rounds.
32:48And it's a pretty good series of shots, a good sequence here by Claudius.
32:54Well Claudius could be, even though we talked about conditioning in the gym,
32:58he could be a little bit sharper or get sharp as this fight goes on.
33:01If conditioning's there, Trujillo could have some trouble.
33:04Claudius gaining steam.
33:07Let's go break it clean.
33:08Get out of there clean.
33:09Break.
33:10Emanuel Plotty.
33:11Time!
33:12As he continued to back Trujillo up.
33:16Coming up next, our main event, Joel Casamayor versus Edwin Santana for the WBA Super Featherweight
33:27belt.
33:28We take you out of the dressing room with the champion, Southport Joel Casamayor.
33:323-0 in world title bouts.
33:34Represented Cuba at the 92 Summer Olympics as a replacement, believe it or not, for an injured fighter.
33:39Talk about a deep bench.
33:40When he brought home the gold, Cuban premier Fidel Castro sent him a bicycle.
33:45Yeah, that Fidel was always a big spender.
33:47Casamayor promptly exchanged the two-wheeler for a pig so he could feed his family.
33:53Very calm, cool and collected there as he listens to some music before the fight.
33:59Very hard to believe in the Olympic team he was second string.
34:02I know we've mentioned that before.
34:04And you talk about a strong team if he was on the bench.
34:08That's a deep bench.
34:09Man.
34:12And we're getting ready for round six here in Philadelphia, not Pennsylvania, Mississippi.
34:17Get some of that water off of the top of his head, all right?
34:20Let's go.
34:22But some extra housekeeping in the Clotty corner.
34:25They were using an awful lot of water and he was just dripping.
34:28Clotty's knees buckled back in round three at the 57-second mark, but he hasn't been in much difficulty since.
34:35In fact, since then he's come on to win.
34:37He's starting to control it.
34:38Yeah.
34:39He's starting to take over the rounds, not by any landslide, but he's out working.
34:42Trujillo, Trujillo on the retreat almost constantly.
34:45So, Clotty turning things around after he was in trouble.
34:57Looking down deep.
34:59He just tasted a good stiff left jab, though, by Trujillo.
35:03But Trujillo didn't follow it up.
35:07Trujillo waiting for something.
35:09He's not throwing the right hand with any real authority.
35:11Even that right uppercut and the right hand before that would just seem to be light.
35:14This is eerily similar to the fight we saw him fight on the Tyson Galata card October 2000.
35:28Good jab.
35:29He took the right hand and fired.
35:31And then he did.
35:32Score with a right hand.
35:33A couple of punches later.
35:34He slipped two in the center of the ring.
35:35Trujillo in the white trunks.
35:36But this is fairly similar to the Trujillo we saw the last time where he just took so long
35:47to seize the initiative.
35:52And he was inconsistent in and out.
35:56Very cautious.
35:57Doesn't want to take any chances.
36:01Nice combination here.
36:02Right hand and left hook.
36:03He needs to throw three and four in a row more often.
36:06Trujillo no question winning this round.
36:09Backing Claudia up now.
36:11Now it's Trujillo on the offensive.
36:23Most if not all those jabs by Claudia are being blocked by the gloves of Trujillo.
36:33Every once in a while, Claudia gets one through the defense.
36:39It seems to be a matter of who is willing to work more and harder when he's around.
36:44It's turn it on, turn it off, turn it on, turn it off.
36:47And Claudia did tell us that he was looking forward to outworking Trujillo.
36:52Which the past two rounds he has, but now he's back to being outworked as Trujillo got
36:57the first two rounds solidly in the bank.
37:00No knockdowns thus far.
37:12Nice combination here by Claudia.
37:14Claudia finishing strong.
37:16And he walked into a right hand and almost got dropped.
37:19And a round controlled for the most part by Trujillo.
37:22And what an exchange before the belt.
37:25A frantic face.
37:28Come on, come on.
37:31Come on.
37:32Come on.
37:33Come on, come on, come on.
37:34Come on, come on, come on, come on.
37:36This is good enough to get the one, get the one right to get it.
37:38Jab him, jab him, let the jab go.
37:42Set him up, set him up with the jab.
37:45Set him up with the jab for the right hand.
37:47Come on.
37:48Come on, come on.
37:49You're gonna see now.
37:53Now, let's watch Trujillo, he works the jab, he works a nice light jab in, then he really
37:56bangs with the jab, and then what he does is take the right hand, he comes across with
38:00it.
38:01This is how he's working the jab, setting Claudio up.
38:03There's the jab.
38:04Look at him.
38:05Power that head back.
38:06And just keep punching him, punching him, punching him, and then the right hand comes
38:09across, keeping him at a distance, keeping him out of bay, keeping Claudio where he wants
38:13him.
38:14Toward the end of the round, again, Claudio heats up late, but sometimes it's just too
38:18little too late.
38:19And this round I thought was dominated predominantly by Trujillo.
38:23You give that round to Trujillo even though Claudio tried to steal it in the end?
38:27I did.
38:28So halfway through this title fight, how do you have it scored thus far?
38:32I have it 4-2 for Trujillo, first three rounds, then the two for Claudio, and that last one
38:37back to Trujillo.
38:38I say title fight with a grain of salt because it's the IBA junior welterweight title.
38:44One of those marginal belts.
38:49Claudio hasn't really connected with his advertised left hook, wanted left hook, but he is outworking
38:56Trujillo at times, which we said was one key to victory.
38:59And his right hand has been better today than the left hook.
39:02His left hook is his better punch.
39:04But the right hand has been more effective with the style Trujillo has.
39:09Claudio has never been down in his career, as mentioned earlier, he almost went earlier
39:12in the fight in round three when Trujillo buckled Claudio's knees.
39:20And then Claudio came on, but then Trujillo responded.
39:25So it's been kind of back and forth, but Bobby has Trujillo ahead.
39:30Good body shot with the left hand by Trujillo.
39:38Even here when Claudio makes Trujillo miss, he doesn't always counter the misses.
39:42He sometimes just walks back in, in which case he either gets a jab or he doesn't score.
39:48Well, Claudio's game just doesn't have much behind the punch.
39:59Good defensive head movement there by Trujillo.
40:07I'm not throwing a lot down the middle either, not a lot of straight punch, not a lot of straight
40:10right hands, inside punches, not coming from the outside of winging it, looping it around.
40:16On the win, Claudio's going to have to out-hustle and out-work Trujillo, but it doesn't seem
40:20to be the case consistently.
40:24Nice left hook by Claudio, and here's a nice combination follow-up.
40:27Good right uppercut that got through by Claudio to the chin of Trujillo.
40:32He backs Trujillo to the ropes, that's not where Trujillo wants to be necessarily.
40:37Claudio coming on a little stronger now, but again those punches don't have much zip.
40:41Now goes Claudio off the left hand by Trujillo.
40:46In the tempo, Steve, he got hit at the top of the tempo.
40:48First time on the canvas of his career.
40:50And he is in big shape.
40:54On very unsteady legs.
40:56The fight is stopped by Elmo Adolf, and Claudio not happy about it.
41:00I'll tell you what, it was a little quick, but I understand when I saw Elmo Adolf, Claudio wobbled a little bit.
41:07You almost can never do that in modern day boxing because the referees are so cautious about fighters getting hurt.
41:13If you wobble, when the referee says walk to me, if you stagger, you're going to get stopped.
41:18And that's exactly what the referee elbow Adolf did.
41:22And it was a left hook and the top of the tempo again.
41:24Right over his right ear.
41:26He done, top of the tempo.
41:28Top portion of the head, very soft.
41:30The tempo is very vulnerable.
41:32And obviously, it's one of those spots where Claudio does not take a punch well because earlier when you got buckled, same place, same punch.
41:39Trujillo exults, hearing it from the crowd as he goes to 21-0 with 16 knockouts.
41:46Putting Claudio down here.
41:49In round number seven, it'll be a TKO in the books as Claudio pastes the canvas for the first time in his 19-fight career.
42:00A beautiful left off the temple of Emmanuel Claudio sent him reeling.
42:16So Alex Trujillo remains undefeated.
42:22And he also wins the IVA junior welterweight belt.
42:27He's going to go back and listen to the end of the round as well as take a look.
42:32One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
42:50Well, you can see the protest of Emmanuel Claudio, but I think I have to go along with the referee here as well, Elmo Adolph.
43:02He just looked in his eyes.
43:03He saw something, plus the staggering of the legs.
43:05Plus, he went down face first, and that's not a good sign either.
43:09Well, what happened was this.
43:10When you get hit in the temple sometimes, or in the top of the head, and even for that matter, sometimes you draw.
43:15You get like a little short circuit that goes through your system, and you can't control what your legs are doing.
43:19And his legs did a little bit of a Watusi imitation.
43:23He went down. I thought he might have torn his knee even.
43:25He really went down funny on his legs, and I didn't know that he was going to get up at all.
43:28Yeah, I'm going to side with Mr. Adolph on this one.
43:31I think the fight would stop just a hair too quick.
43:33I think he could have let him go for one more combination.
43:35You know, having said that, no one knows what could happen.
43:38At the same time, I really believe he should have let him at least attempt to finish the round.
43:42And if he finished the round stronger, the fight keeps going.
43:45Trujillo might climb the ratings some more now.
43:49And perhaps he'll soon put himself in a position for a world title shot.
43:54Let's get the official word from our ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr.
44:00Ladies and gentlemen, we have a time of 2 minutes 33 seconds in round number seven.
44:07Our referee in charge, Elmo Adolph, stops the contest.
44:10The winner by way of technical knockout.
44:13And he is now the IBA junior welterweight champion and still undefeated,
44:19Alexander the Great Trujillo.
44:23All right, some minor controversy here at the end of the fight.
44:31So let's take another look from a different perspective from the overhead camera.
44:35And once again, listen to the words of referee Elmo Adolph.
44:38One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
44:55No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
44:59A little too quick, Steve.
45:02I think it's just a little too quick.
45:04It's a tough call, but I'm just going to stand by my judgment and go for the safety.
45:11And say that it was a good job by Adolph.
45:13Let's get it up to Tim Smith.
45:14Tim.
45:15Thanks, Steve.
45:16This was a fight that swung back and forth in terms of momentum
45:19until Trujillo just ended it with the big left hand right at the end of the fight.
45:24And was this a punch that you were trying to set up throughout the fight?
45:34That's correct.
45:35The only one that didn't come at the beginning, but then I was accommodating it with my left
45:39jab to confuse it.
45:41A lot of the left jab to confuse it with his left hand to hit the jab.
45:45And I confused it with a left hook at the same time.
45:48I kept jabbing him, making sure he was trying to pick out the jab with his right hand, you
45:53know.
45:54And I feigned him one time, came back with a left hook.
45:55I knew I heard him, but I knew he was dropping that right hand every time I was jabbing at him.
45:58So I set that left hook up.
46:00Okay, now Claudi reacted in a manner in which he thought the stoppage might have been a
46:05little bit too fast.
46:07What did you think of the stoppage?
46:08Was it a good stoppage by the referee?
46:10A little bit more 그럼 that he's going to bowl.
46:16If that referee is going to stop the fight, he's going to be really honest, that guy would have been
46:20seriously hurt, because he was really hurt when he hit him with the left hook.
46:24And whenever he lands that left hook, he's going to hurt somebody.
46:27And if that referee wouldn't have stopped the fight, he's going to be really honest.
46:29That guy would have been seriously hurt because he was very hurt when he hit him with the left hook.
46:33And whenever he lands that left hook, he's going to hurt somebody.
46:36Okay.
46:36Now, you were saying that you might want to go back down to 135 pounds and contend there for a title.
46:43But an explosive performance tonight at 140 pounds.
46:47Do you move back down or do you stay at 140?
47:10First of all, you know, we're going to have to hot up with our promoter, Dan Goosen, at America Presents.
47:15And we're going to have to go back to, you know, to see exactly what we want to do.
47:18If something comes by at 135 pounds, we'll do it.
47:21But that's up to our promotional company, America Presents.
47:23And thank you very much, Showtime and the Chateau Tribe in Mississippi.
47:27They've been tremendous to us and we're really, really happy to be here.
47:30Tremendous.
47:30Thank you, Showtime.
47:31He says that he wants to thank, again, Showtime, his promoter, Dan Goosen of America Presents.
47:49And the Chateau Tribe here in Philadelphia, Mississippi, they've been tremendous.
47:52Thank you very much.
47:53Okay, well, thank you and congratulations, Alex.
47:57And we have here a member of the commission tonight, Mr. Hazleton.
48:02Did you think the stoppage was too quick?
48:05No.
48:06One punch too early, a lot better than one punch too late.
48:09He wobbled when he looked at him.
48:10Elmo looked in his eyes.
48:12He's certainly a veteran referee.
48:15As far as I was concerned, it was a proper stoppage.
48:17So, in your estimation, even though he was standing up, was there some wobble there that
48:22gave you an indication that he was ready not to...
48:24There was a wobble when he...
48:25Incidentally, he didn't give him a mandatory eight.
48:28He gave him a nine to give him every opportunity to come back.
48:31Didn't do it.
48:32He didn't walk.
48:33His gait was not proper.
48:34Elmo made the stop.
48:35I concur with it.
48:36And incidentally, Trujillo was ahead on all cards at the time anyway.
48:40Okay, so the commission here thinks it was a good stoppage, Steve.
48:44And Claudie lives to fight another day.
48:46All right, Tim, I agree.
48:48What was it about the stoppage that may have irked you just a bit there, Bobby?
48:53Well, it was just a...
48:54I mean, the wobble was ever so slight, and he seemed to have his feet under him, just a
48:58hair of a wobble.
48:59I thought he should have just given...
49:00Like, I've seen referees do more than once.
49:01Take another step to me.
49:02If he wobbles again, you cancel it, but don't cancel it right away.
49:05It's a world championship fight.
49:06This is boxing.
49:07This is not, you know, patty cake.
49:09Well, as the man said, Trujillo was ahead on all three judges' scorecards at the time of the
49:15stoppage.
49:15Coming up next, our main event, the WBA 130-pound championship undefeated, Joel Casamayor making
49:22his third title defense against Edwin Santana.
49:26Into the dressing room with the champion, 92 Olympic gold medalist Joel Casamayor on a
49:31collision course with WBO champ Asilino Freitas, who pulled out of tonight's card at the last
49:35minute, citing personal problems.
49:37Their showdown's still on tentatively for July 14th.
49:41Carlos Casamayor fulfilling his obligation to fight.
49:44A loss, although unlikely, would derail that super fight between Casamayor and Freitas.
49:49Let's check the scoring from
49:53tonight's opening bout between
49:54Alex Trujillo and Emmanuel
49:56Clotty first the official judges
