00:04of the voting we thank you for
00:05your participation the online
00:06voting will continue with the
00:07start of our next bout Felix
00:09Trinidad versus Troy Waters and
00:12right now we're set to go back
00:14inside the ropes with some
00:16analysis of that fight from from
00:18Bobby Chen Bobby Sanchez does
00:22give me does some things on the
00:23inside trying to work hard but
00:24look at look at just look at the
00:26way Lopez finishes he throws
00:28punches they're hard to see
00:29he's a thin frail guy only
00:31weighs 105 pounds but he's
00:33ripping the shots up on the
00:34inside left and right which works
00:36the uppercuts we've got a quick
00:37view there tail end all right
00:42Bobby as we go outside inside the
00:44ropes once again coming up next
00:46our main event the WBC super
00:48Walter Waite elimination bout a
00:52crowd of better than 14,000 on
00:54hand here we are just told at
00:56Madison Square Garden the Mecca of
01:00boxing undefeated IVF welterweight
01:02champion Felix Trinidad goes
01:03against number one WBC super
01:05welterweight contender Troy
01:06Waters the winner to become the
01:08mandatory challenger for Terry
01:10Norris his WBC super welterweight
01:13bout.
01:15Let's get it back to Jim Gray right
01:17now standing by with a special
01:19guest Jim.
01:20All right.
01:20Thank you very much Steve I'm now
01:21here with the vice president of
01:23sports for massive explosive
01:24punching power but in four of
01:25those eleven defenses he was
01:27knocked down raising legitimate
01:28questions about his chin what
01:30try waters may lack in technique
01:32he makes up for in heart toughness
01:34and sporadic power as Terry
01:36Norris who got decked by waters
01:38back in 1993 these are uncharted
01:41waters for Trinidad who has never
01:42fought at 154 will it make a
01:45difference well Trinidad gives us
01:47his take on that.
01:54He weighed in and the same weight
01:56of 146 and one half pounds Felix
02:02Tito Trinidad.
02:06As of today I could still be at the
02:09welterweight level but we decided to
02:11move up in weight while some believe
02:14he was having trouble making the
02:15147 pound limit Trinidad claims it
02:18was another reason to leave the
02:20welterweight division.
02:22I'm gaining weight because at 147
02:25pounds those fighters that are
02:28supposed to be the best in the
02:29world don't want to fight me.
02:32Despite the added weight the hard
02:34hitting Trinidad is confident his
02:36greatest strength will not be
02:38diminished.
02:41I feel much stronger now I know
02:44that I will be able to maintain my
02:46punch.
02:48I also believe that you're born with
02:50your punch but over time you can
02:54develop it even more.
02:56What I really want is to win the
02:59title and then go ahead and plan my
03:02future because I want to be the best
03:05one pound for pound in the world.
03:08I'm the best already but I want the
03:10whole world to be convinced of it.
03:22So will Trinidad step up and wait
03:24to have any bearing on his
03:25performance tonight and what about
03:27his history of getting knocked
03:28down.
03:29Trinidad has told us on several
03:30occasions that his excellent
03:31conditioning gives him his quick
03:33recuperative powers after all he has
03:35come back to knock out all four
03:36opponents who put him on the
03:38canvas he downplays the notion of a
03:40suspect chin by saying all great
03:42champions have been knocked down.
03:44Well let me pose this question to
03:45the fight doctor.
03:46Ferdy what about his step up in
03:48weight will that have any effect
03:49on Trinidad in terms of punching
03:51power.
03:51I don't think so at all in terms of
03:53punching power of anything you'll
03:54punch a little bit heavier.
03:55What I want to see tonight is
03:57does it affect his speed his
03:59reflexes because that's what's got
04:00him here.
04:01He's so fast his reflexes so good on
04:03defense he's picture perfect on his
04:05punches if his reflexes are awful
04:07because he's heavier that may
04:08affect his performance not
04:09punching power.
04:10I believe if anything he's going
04:12to punch harder as he goes up to
04:13in that weight.
04:15He is a perfect aimer of punches
04:18if you want to call it the
04:19accurate.
04:20He's accurate he's accurate he's
04:21right on the money.
04:22So with those punches and that
04:24weight he should be devastating.
04:25How about his mental focus going
04:27into this fight.
04:28Is that a lot of letdowns you
04:29know on those fights.
04:30I don't think there's a letdowns
04:31those is like you know you're
04:32going to take an exam in a real
04:34hard course to say no you're not
04:35going to have algebra today you're
04:36going to have English and then
04:37because they say they're not going
04:38to have English going to have
04:39physical ed.
04:40I mean you know if the easier it
04:41gets the more the fighter says
04:42oh that's good I'll go and get my
04:45money and not have to work too
04:46hard.
04:46This guy is is focused on being the
04:49best fighter in the world and when
04:51he says the best he means he wants
04:53to take on De La Hoya everybody.
04:55So the next year or two should be
04:57very interesting with these young
04:58up-and-coming guys really good.
05:00This question academic I
05:01think but how about a
05:02prediction I just don't see how
05:06Troy I think Troy Waters is in
05:07deep water.
05:08Oh.
05:09Oh that's very nice as good as I
05:11could say.
05:11OK.
05:13We have seen Mr. Waters a couple
05:15of times he is a fierce
05:16competitor of course he put Norris
05:19down back in nineteen ninety
05:21three will he pose the same
05:22problems for Trinidad that he did
05:23for Norris.
05:24Well if you consider Trinidad
05:25and Norris's chins to be the
05:26same he would pose the same
05:27problem because he has some power
05:28and after all Trinidad is coming
05:29up to fifty four kind of new
05:31waters for him against Troy
05:32Waters.
05:33But here's the thing Trinidad
05:34when he goes down Steve and he
05:35gets up he seems to be
05:36recuperated by the time he gets
05:38up not as debilitated as Norris
05:40appears.
05:40I think that's going to be key
05:41factor number one.
05:42Number two Trinidad has taller
05:43he's taller has better range
05:45better leverage.
05:46I think all the way around this
05:47is going to be less of a problem
05:48than it was for Norris and
05:50Troy water.
05:50All right.
05:50Well Trinidad is methodical.
05:52He is destructive.
05:53Let's go inside the ropes with
05:54Bobby Ches right now and get a
05:56further review of the style of
05:58Tito Trinidad.
05:59One of the sharpest punches to
06:00come along boxing today here
06:01we're going to see him throw a
06:02double left hook to the head
06:03not done an awful lot short
06:05sharp left hook almost no
06:07motion wasted both crisp both
06:09clean both on the money.
06:11He does that on a regular basis.
06:12Here's how dangerous he is.
06:13Even going backwards you'll see
06:14him tee off on Uri boy compass
06:16with a right hand and a left
06:18hook which started the beginning
06:19of the end for compass that left
06:20hook ripping his head up in the
06:21air.
06:22He is dangerous at every angle
06:24Steve and that is really key
06:25for him as we close out this
06:27installment of inside the ropes.
06:29We look at the WBC number one
06:31rated super welterweight
06:32contender Troy waters engaging
06:35personality very down to earth
06:38and coming into hostile
06:39territory as he's fighting a
06:41popular man from Puerto Rico
06:43born in London moved to Sydney
06:45Australia came to the states to
06:46fight for a while but now he's
06:47back in Sydney recently came to
06:50the states to fight in Kansas
06:51City against Joaquin Velasquez
06:53but that fell through he took
06:54this fight on short notice and
06:56here he comes.
07:03Here we go.
07:06We want our music coming out.
07:08It'll be out.
07:08We'll be on the way to get out
07:09there.
07:09We got a long way to go.
07:10I want to go to the wall.
07:11That's right.
07:11They're playing it right now.
07:13They're showing you.
07:20they're playingetri hop
07:23the garden sure you rock.
07:25They got.
07:29One side please.
08:07Well here comes Troy waters the first Australian to fight at Madison Square Garden former British Commonwealth and Australian Subaru
08:15other way champion finally gets his music going there it took a while but I don't think it's the right
08:20music folks I'll tell you what that's about one of the best looking fighters if he looks a little bit
08:24like Christian Slater who's doing his own fighting
08:27this weekend yeah he has those movie star looks doesn't he yeah he's a good looking kid you know we
08:31got the birdies prediction how about you just for the record Bobby well Steve I clearly think that Trinidad is
08:36the goods and that he will prevail by knockout but what I'd like to see is if Troy waters is
08:40tough enough and durable enough as we saw evidence up against Norris he'd have lasted with the cuts with Norris
08:45might have been interesting fight past rounds five and six that's what I'm looking to see if he gets past
08:49rounds five and six and with his extra weight first time to turn that up here push Trinidad and see
08:55what happens well he takes a lot of punishment
08:57punishment we've seen that but he can punch as evidenced by his effective right cross which put Terry Norris on
09:02the canvas but he does absorb a lot of punishment but he won't back down has the reputation of beating
09:08everybody but the top names has his time come to finally pull off the surprise we'll soon find out here's
09:13the man he's got to surprise Felix Trinidad who will reportedly receive one point two million dollars for this fight
09:20not bad for an title fight he'll have the crowd behind him when he enters the dynamic Felix Trinidad
09:27and he's got to be the LBF welterweight champ making his debut at 154 dad's right in front of dad
09:33worked in the corner of the last losing fighter and now he comes out for a winning fighter let's see
10:00to get to know
10:28Well, despite his unblemished record, high knockout ratio and explosive
10:32power, he does have that suspect chin, although I kind of like the way you put it, Bobby, you
10:41don't call it a suspect chin or a questionable chin, you just say the guy doesn't have a great
10:45chin.
10:45Well, you know what, that's what I believe, Steve.
10:47I believe his chin isn't really suspect, because he doesn't really get demoralized with one
10:52single shot.
10:52He just doesn't have a great chin.
10:54That's not to say it's not even not good, but it's not great, and there is a difference.
10:57He has a history of being rocked early, all four knockdowns against him coming in the
11:02second round, but he is an outstanding boxer, powerful puncher, excellent jab, all around
11:09smooth and vicious.
11:10He plays to the crowd of 14,162 here at Madison Square Garden tonight.
11:20The flag of Mexico, of Puerto Rico, Felix out of Coupe Alto, Puerto Rico.
11:29As we check the tail of the tape, and outside of the age where Trinidad is eight years younger,
11:36Trinidad and Waters are mirror images, same height, same reach, and the weight nearly identical.
11:41And the WBC rules in accordance with New York for this championship fight, scoring by the 10-point
11:46bust.
11:47There's no standing eight count, no three knockdown rule.
11:50The ref or doctor can stop the fight, but it cannot be saved by the bell in any round, as
11:56you can see.
11:57There's the accidental foul rule.
11:59If it occurs before the end of round four, it's a technical draw after they go to the cards.
12:06So right here at Madison Square Garden, we're getting ready for the WBC Super Welterweight elimination bound.
12:12Felix Trinidad versus Troy Waters.

17:31very little
17:35thats alright thats great
17:39good evening gentlemen you both received your instructions earlier in the evening
17:44So shake hands now and come boxing at the bell.
17:48Good luck.
17:52Felix Trinidad one of the highest knockout ratios in boxing today 87 percent 17 of his last 18 opponents did
18:00not last the distance.
18:01Only Hector Camacho took him to the final bell in the last five plus years averages about four rounds per
18:07bout with seven first round knockouts.
18:09And here is Troy Waters involved in one of the more stirring rounds of 93 against Terry Norris.
18:14Round number two.
18:15He was hammered in the first and then knocked Norris down with a right cross.
18:19Norris legitimately rocked and it turned out to be a war the rest of the way.
18:23He's got a solid chin but his face took a beating in that fight 32 stitches over and under the
18:31eyes.
18:31Let's see what happens here tonight against Trinidad.
18:34He felt very clear very clear in his head that if he could have survived the cuts and got into
18:38the seventh or eighth round that he could have stopped Norris.
18:40Because Norris has so much energy to get him out in the first couple of rounds.
18:42He told us that he feels Trinidad is not as physically strong as Norris.
18:47But what Trinidad looks can be deceiving.
18:50He hit Trinidad with a good hook and Trinidad countered right back with the hook.
18:55Trinidad doubling up on the left hooks but those were defended well by Waters.
19:02Now, he has no idea.
19:02Waters says as soon as Trinidad hurts someone, they say I've had enough.
19:05He's not like that.
19:06He says he's not in awe of Felix.
19:09He respects him.
19:12But he added he's coming up to my way his plan is to catch him while he is punching
19:17very few people have been able to back Trinidad up too often right now waters is doing a good job
19:22you're avoid compassed it but quite a tremendous beating on the way in
19:25Waters said defense will be a key for him tonight
19:30I've never seen Trinidad start really fast he kind of boxes are out for one round if he gets knocked
19:35down in a second
19:35but then he gets it in gear otherwise he takes his time he's kind of methodical about things
19:41Trinidad is a notoriously slow starter as you know but not a bad finisher
19:48I wouldn't say not a bad finish I'd say an excellent thing yeah he's so different from Terry Norris
19:52I'd love to see you know if he gets by waters here Norris and Trinidad
19:57Norris type of guy that just jumps right on you that was one of the modern-day dream matches it
20:01really was
20:02yeah but waters does have a good chinny joke one reason why he got a steel plate in his jaw
20:07he had his jaw broken three times once in a car crash two in fights but the waters does look
20:14more physically imposing but I don't know what that means against a guy like Felix Trinidad it
20:19means you take jabs an awful lot and better it's like hitting the side of a building
20:23he keeps bobbing there's a nice oh wow down goes waters the left hook on the temple heard him Steve
20:31the right hand was just like a here take that with you eight nine oh he just made it there
20:39the right
20:40was window dressing let's see if we can finish him off in the first round Trinidad pouring it on
21:04he's out it's over it's over with 10 seconds to go in round one Felix Trinidad has won the bounce
21:14doesn't get too much better than that doesn't seem well waters had a rough little back he didn't have
21:21a chance at just about the stroke of midnight the witching hour took place and there it goes well
21:26well I obviously like everybody thought Trinidad was gonna win I didn't think it was going to be this
21:32fast though or we'd have more of a contest from waters waters would fight back more and try to at
21:38least you know connect with some good punches he got he got hurt before he even got started not a
21:44very satisfying fight but then again this is the third man he was scheduled to fight so that's the way
21:51it goes you know Steve one good way to not worry about the second round knockdowns and knock your
21:54man out in the first yeah right yeah so much for the second round knockdown worries of Felix Tito
22:00Trinidad all four of his knockdowns coming in the second round but he disposes of Australia's Troy
22:07waters in the first round hardly hardly worth the trip all the way from Australia let's take a look
22:13at that and we'll see that the delayed reaction of that you see that it was a every it was
22:18a left
22:18hook to the temple it was a delayed reaction just like we saw the other one over the ear and
22:23no
22:23telling what can happen when you get in the temple watch it again watch that left hook right on the
22:27temple there it is and you can see the delayed reactions feet are not really under the right hand
22:31doesn't even really hit his head it's him in the shoulder he was on his way to the camp yeah
22:34the right
22:35hand had nothing to do with I mean he almost dove for the canvas but it's just that all right
22:40let's
22:40take a look at the second one because it's this one is a continuous just pummeling Tito just decided
22:46over and under and up and over and not many of those punches are going through cleanly but you know
22:52what
22:52he's punched so hard he's punching through the gloves and a couple of shots that hit the head right there
22:56the head and just as many fighters have had problems those headshots as does Troy waters and
23:02and we also saw it go right through the gloves Bobby and you know I've always said if you're punching
23:07very hard in your gloves up you're feeling it through the glove I mean the heavy punches like Foreman
23:11the list and those guys watch here see that left hook to the head and that one yeah those who
23:15really finished him those two those who really got him right in that third one that's the third one
23:19right those shot to the temple the same thing that got him down the start and so much for stepping
23:23up
23:23and weight being a problem for Felix Trinidad there he is the scoring knockdowns at 208 and the final
23:30one at 236 TKO officially at 250 250 of round one Felix talking to the folks back home in Puerto
23:44Rico
23:46and Felix Trinidad is successful in his first fight at 154 over number one contender Troy waters and now
23:56replaces waters as the number one WBC super welterweight contender in line for the title of Terry Norris
24:01let's go over to Jimmy Leonard Junior right now at the official time ladies and gentlemen we have the time
24:09of
24:10two minutes 50 seconds of round number one a referee in charge Arthur Mercanti reaches the count of ten he's
24:18the winner by way of knockout he is still undefeated Felix
24:23taking as it is in the next six to go so train that out 32 and 0 with 28 knockouts
24:33all kinds of future
24:34possibilities for the Puerto Rican given his size and potential he may he may not stop at super weather
24:42way you could go higher than that but uh he could go back down in like I内court say Oscar de
24:48la Hoia as you look at
24:49and Troy Waters in the feet here
24:53tonight he wants Felix once told
24:55us though that his dream fight is
24:57with Pernell Whitaker but that
24:58this which is now to Terry
24:59Norris meanwhile Troy Waters
25:01slips to twenty seven and five
25:02once again unable to beat a top
25:04name and it remains to be seen
25:06what happens from the point this
25:09point on with Terry Norris he
25:11could defend his title or move
25:12down to fight for Tay or De La
25:14Hoyer give give his belt away
25:16creating a vacancy.
25:18All right let's go up to Jim
25:19Gray for post-fight reaction.
25:21Jim all right thank you very
25:22much Steve congratulations to
25:25you once again Abel is going to
25:27be our translator working
25:28overtime tonight Abel first of
25:29all tell me did you feel as
25:31though this would be as easy as
25:32it was.
25:35Well I just just I yeah you
25:37know you know you know you know
25:40I came to win but I came to win
25:43with a knockout Felix what do you
25:45do now you are forcing a
25:46mandatory fight of Norris however
25:48you know these could be two
25:50ships sailing past each other in
25:51the night because he could opt
25:52out and give up his title do you
25:54feel as though he will come and
25:55fight you now.
26:19do you feel as though he's ducking you
26:24Norris.
26:33he's running for me but Don King is
26:35going to force him to fight against
26:36me and we're going to be number one.
26:37not scoffed.
26:38No one can force him however let's
26:39take a look at your first knockdown
26:41and then your second knockdown Felix
26:43tell us what was going on with this.
26:44what was going on with this.
26:52The first good punch that I hit him with was the left hand and I felt that I hurt him
26:55because I hit real hard without a hand.
26:57And the second knockdown?
27:08I cornered him and I threw a lot of unanswered punches and I think that's what really finished
27:13off the fight.
27:17We see it wind up here.
27:18Let me ask you, Felix, how disappointing have these past several months been?
27:22You were set to fight Norris, it didn't come off because of the Tyson fight, then the delay,
27:28now he has opted out.
27:29How disappointing has this been for you and how difficult has it been for you because
27:32you've wanted to fight him very badly?
27:41It's very difficult to fight for you because you wanted to fight him very badly.
27:49No, I just kept training, I followed the lead, my father's lead and I kept training because
27:52I knew I was going to fight the 23rd.
27:54You seemed to be more excited the night you jumped up on the ropes, is that because you
27:57had so many fans here rooting you on?
27:59I was very happy, I jumped up on the ropes, because there were a lot of people here who
28:03were supporting him.
28:04Yes, yes, I feel like I was at home in Puerto Rico.
28:06There are a lot of Boricos and a lot of Latinos who came to support me.
28:10All right.
28:11Congratulations, Don.
28:12Your thoughts and comments.
28:13What about Terry Norris?
28:15I think that Terry Norris is afraid.
28:17I think he showed his cowardice when he went out.
28:18He let Bob Graham blow smoke in his brain.
28:21When this is the night he should have been there to catapult himself into prominence.
28:24He and his manager, Joe Zayatovich, and Tito Trinidad and his father and their lawyer made
28:30the deal for the contract for Terry Norris and Trinidad.
28:33They bought it to me to promote it.
28:34I agreed to promote it and went out there to do it.
28:37Terry Norris took the money on the first fight, which was seven, eight hundred fifty thousand.
28:42He took the Mercedes Benz, a hundred thousand dollar Mercedes Benz, and then they let Aram
28:48tell him that something is wrong because the fight was postponed.
28:51And he ran off.
28:52And I think he showed a yellow cowardice.
28:55I love Terry Norris, but I think he did a very stupid thing when he did this here to this
29:00fight
29:01because he should be in the ring tonight.
29:02Quickly, though, Don, and we'll come back to this.
29:04What are you going to do to resurrect it?
29:06What are you going to do to bring these two parties together?
29:08Well, first of all, I'm going to win in court.
29:11That's one thing, because he said the contract ain't no good.
29:13He made it.
29:14If it ain't no good, he made it, not me.
29:16And then secondly, I got contracts on Terry Norris that's promotional as well as bout agreements.
29:22And so while he's going through this here, and he's not the mandatory challenger, he can't
29:26get away, as Joe Lutz would say, he can run, but he can't hide.
29:29The only thing Terry Norris can do is to give up his title because his stock has went down
29:33precipitously.
29:34He is zero.
29:35And see, now he's fighting on ESPN for a hundred thousand dollars or fifty thousand dollars,
29:40whatever Aram can count him into doing, and it's the most stupidest thing he's ever done
29:43in his life.
29:44We're with Don in just a moment.
29:46Troy Waters is right here.
29:47He is fine as he gets his congratulations from Tito.
29:50Congratulations to you, Tito.
29:51Let's send it back now to Steve.
29:53All right, Jim.
29:55I get the feeling that Don is just warming up.
29:57Coming up next here at Madison Square Garden in New York, the WBA featherweight championship.
30:03Wilfredo Vasquez will take on Roque Cassiani.
30:06That our fifth and final fight.
30:09Big crowd of 14,162 and our live edition of the fights ending with a bang, literally,
30:17with Felix Trinidad putting Troy Waters on the canvas two times.
30:21The second one ended it.
30:23And I thought that Arthur McCutty gave Troy Waters every opportunity.
30:26He counted them right up to the end.
30:28Right now, let's go back to Jim.
30:30Right now, let's go back to Jim.
30:32The last two hours, five-leader people grandma and órganess.
