00:02:00tonight live from the theater at me
00:02:29Live from the theater at Madison Square Garden in New York,
00:02:32HBO Sports presents World Championship Boxing.
00:02:36First up, colorful, undefeated junior welterweight contender
00:02:39Hector Camacho Jr. takes on Joe Hutchinson,
00:02:43followed by the first title defense of welterweight champion Shane Mosley
00:02:47as he faces a tough, dangerous opponent,
00:02:51fellow Californian Antonio Diaz.
00:02:53A gorgeous, crystal-clear autumn night in New York City.
00:02:57The streets were filled with visitors and residents today,
00:03:01taking advantage of the spectacular weather.
00:03:04And tonight, a sellout crowd in the theater room at Madison Square Garden
00:03:08turns out to see boxing's newly anointed superstar,
00:03:13Shane Mosley, in his first appearance since the big win over Oscar De La Hoya.
00:03:17Hello again, everybody. I'm Jim Lampley.
00:03:18We welcome you to this special edition of HBO's World Championship Boxing,
00:03:23special because since Madison Square Garden reemerged
00:03:26as a key boxing venue in the middle 90s.
00:03:29Oscar De La Hoya, Roy Jones, Lennox Lewis, Nassim Hamed, Felix Trinidad
00:03:35have all made pilgrimages here to help establish their credentials atop the sport.
00:03:41And now Shane Mosley follows suit in the wake of his spectacular win over Oscar De La Hoya
00:03:45earlier this year, with Mosley now being seen by some
00:03:49as either the number one or number two pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.
00:03:52Can he embellish those credentials against Diaz?
00:03:56We'll see later tonight.
00:03:57First up, we're going to see Hector Camacho Jr.
00:04:00It's junior time as we watch the son, not the father, for the first time here on HBO,
00:04:05fighting against journeyman Joe Hutchinson, who took the fight on very short notice
00:04:09when original opponent Goyo Vargas retired within the past couple of weeks.
00:04:14Let's turn our attention right now to the main event, and Mosley,
00:04:17with HBO Boxing analyst Larry Merchant.
00:04:19And Larry, after June 17, this is not the fight that Shane Mosley expected to be fighting next.
00:04:25He expected, and we expected, that he'd be fighting a rematch with Oscar De La Hoya.
00:04:31What happened?
00:04:32One of them, not Mosley, decided he had other things to do.
00:04:37De La Hoya, shocked by that close defeat, waffled on his commitment for a fast rematch.
00:04:43And then he committed to pursuing his budding singing career.
00:04:48And now he's committed to separating himself from his long-term promoter, Bob Arum.
00:04:54Meanwhile, life goes on for Shane Mosley, whose only commitment is to price fighting.
00:05:01Fortunately, there are a number of solid and dangerous opponents out there for him
00:05:06in both the junior middleweight and welterweight divisions.
00:05:11So, tonight, we start with Antonio Diaz.
00:05:17And indeed, it's a tough fight against a real opponent.
00:05:20This is not some tune-up fight.
00:05:22It'll be interesting to see what Mosley can bring to this affair,
00:05:25having expected to be fighting the much higher profile and much bigger price against Oscar De La Hoya.
00:05:32But first, our chance to look at Hector Camacho Jr.
00:05:34We saw his dad many times here on HBO and in the tradition of HBO boxing expert George Foreman.
00:05:42Camacho Sr. brought entertainment value as well as boxing skill to the ring.
00:05:46In that sense, his son is trying to emulate him.
00:05:49But what's the critical difference between Camacho Sr. and Camacho Jr.?
00:05:52I like what Jr. said earlier in the early part of the week.
00:05:55I've gotten more pop than pops.
00:05:57And believe me, he does.
00:05:58He can punch.
00:06:00This is something his dad didn't try to establish.
00:06:02He's a master boxer.
00:06:03I think that Jr. is going to rewrite the whole Camacho family name today.
00:06:07He is the man of the hour.
00:06:08It's Jr. time.
00:06:09It's Jr. time, and we'll get a chance to see him against a brave opponent who has stepped in on less than one week's notice.
00:06:15Goya Vargas retired.
00:06:17Joe Hutchinson took this fight last weekend.
00:06:19Hutchinson's credential, a brave performance against Arturo Gatti in Montreal September 8.
00:06:24Here's the tale of the tape for the two fighters, and you can see that Hutchinson, out of Indianapolis, is 30 years old, giving up eight years in age.
00:06:31He has a five-inch reach advantage over Camacho Jr.
00:06:34Camacho Jr. weighed in four pounds heavier, and in the ensuing 28 hours has gained 12 and a half pounds to go to 154.
00:06:42So young Camacho, who, as George points out, already has more pop than his pop, will enter the ring with a 13-pound weight advantage.
00:06:51Well, that's the difference between Camacho and his dad, but there are many similarities.
00:06:56Ring entrance.
00:06:58Hector Camacho Sr. was one of the first to perfect the theatrical entrance.
00:07:02His son is following in the footsteps of his dad and Prince Nassim.
00:07:07Both of them are southpaws.
00:07:09Even though Camacho Jr. says that he does a lot of things naturally right-handed, he elected to fight as a southpaw, having seen the advantages it created for his dad.
00:07:18And both are basically boxers who occasionally, who can punch.
00:07:23Camacho Jr., as George pointed out, maybe with a little bit more punching power than his dad,
00:07:28but nevertheless, he does it off of a boxing base, as did Camacho Sr.
00:07:33And as you saw, later in his career, Camacho Sr. seldom decided to stand and fight.
00:07:39And that is another critical difference for the moment between the two.
00:07:42Larry?
00:07:42This is a look at both of the Camachos at a similar age.
00:07:47And you can see that senior, who had remarkable quickness, ungodly quickness, threw many more punches early in his career.
00:07:57And that is why Camacho Jr. is still regarded as an untested quantity in the junior welterweight division.
00:08:05Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
00:08:09The Hector Camacho Jr., Joe Hutchinson fight is scheduled for ten rounds, non-title, using the rules of the New York State Athletic Commission.
00:08:17There is no stay in the eight count.
00:08:20The three-knockdown rule is in effect.
00:08:23The doctor or the referee can stop the fight, and you cannot be shared by the bell at any round, including the 10th and Bonner round.
00:08:30Jim.
00:08:31All right, Harold.
00:08:32And we get ready for the entrance of Joe Hutchinson.
00:08:36As I mentioned, on September 8th, he traveled to Montreal to take on Arturo Gatti.
00:08:42He said that he had never felt the kind of punching power that Gatti brought to the fight.
00:08:46But nevertheless, Hutchinson was able to produce a cut over Gatti's eye that bothered Arturo throughout the fight.
00:08:52How many times have we seen that?
00:08:54Gatti wound up with the unanimous decision.
00:08:56Hutchinson and his followers thought the score should have at least been much closer.
00:09:00And that credential got him enough notice to bring him here.
00:09:03He was a Midwestern suspect going into that fight, undefeated.
00:09:08But he took so many good shots from Gatti that suddenly he becomes a legitimate opponent for a young fighter like Camacho Jr.
00:09:20Joe Hutchinson at 30 years old makes his first trip to New York.
00:09:23And he's not the first ever to have said, there are just too many people here for me.
00:09:28Kind of looking forward to getting back to Indianapolis.
00:09:32Yeah, and his five kids.
00:09:34Father of five, could not turn down the opportunity to take this fight,
00:09:38even though coming back from Gatti's thunder with only two months to prepare for a fighter like Camacho Jr.
00:09:44is not the ideal way to come to the fight.
00:09:4718-1 and 2, the record against totally anonymous opposition except for Gatti.
00:09:52Eight KOs for Hutchinson.
00:09:53And here comes Camacho Jr.,
00:10:02who says that he's different from his dad,
00:10:07but acknowledges that he was inspired to become a boxer
00:10:10by an experience that took place in this building 14 years ago
00:10:15when his father, at the height of his career, took on Edwin Rosario in a big battle here.
00:10:21And Hector Jr. led his dad into the ring,
00:10:25shadowboxed with his dad in the ring in front of the assembled crowd
00:10:28and told us, I remember the thrill of coming into the ring.
00:10:32I remember the response of the crowd when I shadowboxed with my dad.
00:10:35And I told myself then and there, this is what I wanted to do with my life.
00:10:41Now he fights for the first time in New York.
00:10:45He was born and raised here, but lives his life with his wife and child in Puerto Rico.
00:10:50Another legendary boxing family and from New York,
00:10:58Floyd Patterson and Tracy Patterson,
00:11:01the only other father-son champions in the history of the sport.
00:11:07Camacho still has that goal,
00:11:10but he is still a way, away from it.
00:11:15Right now, what he is,
00:11:18is a Camacho sequel.
00:11:22Is the sequel as good as the original?
00:11:25So he's entering the ring as Lady Liberty?
00:11:28No.
00:11:29Lady Liberty was a piñata.
00:11:31And he's busted himself out of the piñata.
00:11:34This is a thoroughly engaging young man.
00:11:38And he has, at least on the surface,
00:11:41a spectacularly balanced attitude toward his dad.
00:11:43He says about his father,
00:11:45I think he's tremendously entertaining.
00:11:47He's a nut.
00:11:48I can't take him terribly seriously all the time,
00:11:50but I am inspired by his ability to both entertain as well as fight.
00:11:55And I'll take the best of what he did and build on it.
00:11:59You know, Senior was like this hyper six-year-old
00:12:02bouncing off the walls.
00:12:04Energy that never stopped.
00:12:07Junior is more like a fun-loving, clever teenager.
00:12:16So what you're saying is that
00:12:17even if he spends his life as a perpetual teenager,
00:12:20he'll have a big edge in maturity on his day.
00:12:25No matter how long they live, that will be true.
00:12:27I have to agree with you.
00:12:34Hutchinson said that he would not be thrown off
00:12:41by however long it takes for Camacho Jr. to get into the ring,
00:12:44but he did say it'll be motivation for him
00:12:46to try to embarrass Camacho Jr. in the first round.
00:12:51Incidentally, Camacho Jr. is nothing if not audacious.
00:12:54And speaking of audacity, there's his dad dancing as he waits for him on the canvas.
00:13:00But Camacho Jr. told us that his ambition is to be the next Henry Armstrong of the sport.
00:13:06And by that he means that he wants to hold three world championships simultaneously.
00:13:11He would like to win a world title at 135, and at 140, and at 147,
00:13:17and not necessarily in that order.
00:13:20Will you tell me what's going on here?
00:13:23Is this some kind of long-distance dance?
00:13:27What are we waiting on?
00:13:31Well, if I knew what was going on, I would tell you what was going on.
00:13:34Junior time runs very slowly.
00:13:37Now Jr. has decided to move forward toward the ring.
00:13:40No, no, just bring access.
00:13:42No access.
00:13:43No, no access.
00:13:43No access.
00:13:44No access.
00:13:52And the record for Hector Camacho Jr.
00:13:57At this moment in his career, his father was 29-0 after his 29th pro fight,
00:14:02and Hector Jr. is 29-0 after his 29th pro fight.
00:14:12Presumably, he'll take the hat off to box.
00:14:14As you watch this telecast, you can log on to www.hbo.com slash boxing
00:14:18to chat and score each round of Camacho Hutchinson or Mosley Diaz,
00:14:23listen to live audio transmission of both fighters' trainers,
00:14:26participate in tonight's website question.
00:14:28Who's the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing today?
00:14:31The four listed candidates are the names you see there.
00:14:35The list was comprised from a survey of three independent
00:14:38and prominent boxing writers.
00:14:40Larry, George, and I did not provide those four names.
00:14:44Those are the four names provided by an independent panel.
00:14:48You, of course, can write in somebody else
00:14:50if you think somebody not listed there
00:14:52is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.
00:14:54We'll give the results later.
00:14:56And there's a live chat with Vernon Forrest later on this evening.
00:14:59He's one of the welterweights who are circling Mosley at this point,
00:15:03looking for a chance to fight for Shane's title.
00:15:05Now let's go up to ring announcer Michael Buffer
00:15:07for the official introductions.
00:15:11Ladies and gentlemen, good evening,
00:15:12and welcome to the theater of Madison Square Garden, New York City,
00:15:17where tonight, Cedric Kushner Promotions
00:15:20in association with your undisputed, undefeated King of Beers, Budweiser,

00:15:29present HBO World Championship Boxing,
00:15:33sanctioned by the New York State Athletic Commission.
00:15:36This first bout is presented in association with America Presents.
00:15:40The three judges assigned to ringside scoring this contest
00:15:45on the ten-point must system will be
00:15:48Larry Hazard Jr., Melvina Latham, and Steve Weisfeld.
00:15:54And when the bell rings,
00:15:55your referee in charge of the action, Steve Smoger.
00:15:59And now, ladies and gentlemen,
00:16:01ten rounds of boxing in the junior welterweight division.
00:16:05Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner,
00:16:10wearing green trimmed with white letters
00:16:12and weighing in at 137 and one-half pounds.
00:16:16His professional record, 18 victories,
00:16:19with only one loss and two bouts even by draw,
00:16:22with eight of his victories have been by KO.
00:16:26Gentlemen, he is the pride of Indianapolis, Indiana.
00:16:30Here is little Joel Hutchinson.
00:16:35And across the ring, fighting out of the red corner,
00:16:42wearing white, red and blue,
00:16:44and weighing in at 141 and one-half pounds.
00:16:48A professional record, a perfect one.
00:16:5029-0, including 17 victories by knockout,
00:16:54and he is rated number one in the world by the WBA.
00:16:58Ladies and gentlemen, from San Juan, Puerto Rico,
00:17:01it's junior time, here is the undefeated Hector Macho Camacho Jr.
00:17:10Here is the undefeated Hector Macho Camacho Jr.
00:17:31Stay light, stay sharp.
00:17:35Stay alert.
00:17:36Move your hands.
00:17:43Joe?
00:17:44All right, gentlemen, you were given your instructions at the weigh-in.
00:17:47I want you to obey my commands at all times,
00:17:49protect yourself at all times, and respect the bell.
00:17:51God bless.
00:17:52Touch card.
00:17:55Junior admits he has big shoes to fill.
00:18:00Perhaps we'll get a clue to how well he may fill them one day tonight.
00:18:05I wonder if it's disconcerting for Junior to see his dad there in his corner,
00:18:11since he said to us yesterday in our meeting,
00:18:13I certainly hope my dad is nowhere near my corner.
00:18:16He'll probably be on top of the Empire State Building.
00:18:20He mentioned one previous fight in which his dad was working in his corner,
00:18:25and when he came back to the corner after the sixth round,
00:18:27there was no more water in his water bottle,
00:18:28because his dad had been out partying the night before,
00:18:31and it was a bit, how you say, dehydrated.
00:18:33So his dad said, oh, well, go knock the guy out,
00:18:36and you won't need any water.
00:18:38Now, Junior's got to make this crowd love him,
00:18:41and the way you do that is get yourself a good knockout.
00:18:44They'll forget about your dad and love you more.
00:18:47Hutchinson has got to fight, fight, fight.
00:18:49No excuses.
00:18:50Anybody who stood in for ten rounds against Gotti at this weight
00:18:54is going to be a tough man to knock out.
00:18:56A lot of guys want to get in and say,
00:18:57I didn't have enough time, I wasn't prepared,
00:18:59but this is his night to steal the show.
00:19:01It's right there for him.
00:19:03Quickness of Camacho, Junior.
00:19:05Right-left combination.
00:19:07Hutchinson vowed to go to the body early and as hard as he can.
00:19:15Getting to the body of a fighter as quick as Camacho, Junior.
00:19:18No easy proposition.
00:19:22Hutchinson has already decided
00:19:23every time he's hit by Camacho, Junior,
00:19:25he comes right back to the body with a shot.
00:19:28Incidentally, it is southpaw, southpaw, as you can see.
00:19:31I don't know if we ever mentioned in a brief fight
00:19:32that Hutchinson, too, is a southpaw.
00:19:40When you're fighting a guy like that,
00:19:42Camacho, Junior, better prepare to use a jab,
00:19:45punch, and move out of the way
00:19:46because this guy intends to be there for the night.
00:19:49Hutchinson can take a punch.
00:19:52Camacho, Junior, already decided
00:19:54to throw hard body shots.
00:19:58Good left hand up top by Camacho, Junior.
00:20:04If you're fighting a guy like Hutchinson,
00:20:05you've got to go to the body.
00:20:08You've got to go to the body.
00:20:09You've got to do it early.
00:20:09Well, and if Camacho, Junior,
00:20:12indeed focuses on the body,
00:20:14and you saw a combination to the body there,
00:20:17that'll be another element of his arsenal
00:20:18that's different from his dad.
00:20:20That's right.
00:20:21He's already starting with his right hook to the body.
00:20:24The head shots are not going to bother Hutchinson.
00:20:27He's intending to weather the storm
00:20:28and be there to the 6th and 7th round.
00:20:37You need only to see this round
00:20:39to see that Hutchinson is a strong fighter
00:20:42for this weight class.
00:20:44Sturdy.
00:20:46So Camacho, Junior,
00:20:47will have to break him apart piece by piece
00:20:50if he's going to get the KO
00:20:52that would excite the crowd.
00:20:53Keep him up.
00:20:55Understand that?
00:20:56Keep him up.
00:20:56Steve Smoger telling Junior to keep him up.
00:20:58Got to keep him up.
00:20:59Camacho hit Hutchinson low.
00:21:02Hutchinson responded with his own
00:21:04below-the-belt shot.
00:21:06That's the way to do it.
00:21:07That's professional.
00:21:10Hutchinson is doing a good job
00:21:11of absorbing, punishing,
00:21:12but you don't follow around
00:21:13a big puncher like that
00:21:15and just wait to be hit.
00:21:16You've got to follow him around
00:21:17punching him also.
00:21:18Go ahead!
00:21:23When they speak Spanish
00:21:27in Camacho, Junior's corner,
00:21:29our interpreter there,
00:21:31the incomparable Ray Torres.
00:21:34Camacho does not have
00:21:35a big-name, high-profile corner.
00:21:37These are the men he can work with
00:21:39in Puerto Rico,
00:21:40and he says they're good enough for me.
00:21:41Let's get that spit bucket there.
00:21:50That was our round.
00:21:52We won that round.
00:21:52That was an easy one.
00:21:54You keep going the same way.
00:21:55Outbox him.
00:21:59Put a little bit more speed
00:22:04on them punches.
00:22:04Yeah.
00:22:06A little more punches.
00:22:07All right.
00:22:07Don't go punches.
00:22:08Don't go punches.
00:22:09Okay.
00:22:09You got to dig, okay?
00:22:11All right.
00:22:12Okay.
00:22:12You took his best shot, man.
00:22:16Camacho, Senior yelling
00:22:18from ringside,
00:22:19stop loading up.
00:22:21It will come.
00:22:22And you may have noticed
00:22:23in Joe Hutchinson's corner,
00:22:25the very familiar figure
00:22:26of trainer Don Turner,
00:22:28one of the real top veteran
00:22:29trainers in the sport.
00:22:30Trainer, of course,
00:22:31of Evander Holyfield
00:22:33and Michael Grant
00:22:34and Clifford Etienne,
00:22:36all in the heavyweight division,
00:22:37but he ventures outside
00:22:39the heavyweight division
00:22:40from time to time
00:22:40and is here with Hutchinson tonight.
00:22:51Camacho has got to make certain
00:22:52that if this guy follows you,
00:22:53you got to hit him with three shots.
00:22:54Don't do it with one
00:22:55and keep your body out of his way.
00:22:58Do not allow this guy
00:22:59to hit you in the body
00:23:00because he's going to be there
00:23:01for the latter round.
00:23:02You just want to make certain
00:23:03your power is in your pocket.
00:23:05And the way to lose it
00:23:06is to get hit in the body.
00:23:15Interesting that while
00:23:16Camacho, Junior,
00:23:17will playfully in conversation
00:23:19discount his father's influence,
00:23:22between rounds,
00:23:23he listens partially
00:23:24with one ear to his trainer
00:23:26and cocked his head
00:23:27outside the ring
00:23:28several times
00:23:29to listen to what
00:23:30his father was saying to him
00:23:31from down here near press row.
00:23:35Let him out, let him out, Junior.
00:23:36Let him out, let him out.
00:23:38Let him out, Junior.
00:23:39Let him out.
00:23:41Hutchinson is pursuing Camacho, Junior
00:23:43like the Tasmanian devil
00:23:45or something.
00:23:46Keeps his eye on him.
00:23:47He stops every punch.
00:23:49He gets right back
00:23:50with something of his own.
00:23:51Well, if I'm fighting
00:23:52a flashy fighter
00:23:53who comes from
00:23:53a flashy fighter heritage,
00:23:55my instinct to stay
00:23:57is to say,
00:23:57let's put pressure on him
00:23:58and see if he can handle it.
00:23:59He's fighting.
00:24:00No doubt about it.
00:24:01He's fighting him.
00:24:02He holds him.
00:24:03He gets in the clutch.
00:24:04He punches.
00:24:06He gets hit on the head.
00:24:08He punches back.
00:24:08Push off.
00:24:14Hutchinson getting
00:24:15the largest purse
00:24:16of his career
00:24:17by far tonight.
00:24:18But as he said to us,
00:24:20the money's only part of it.
00:24:22It's what it can do
00:24:23for me in the future
00:24:24that means a lot more.
00:24:26That large purse, Jim,
00:24:28is just $35,000.
00:24:29And it's way above
00:24:31whatever he's gotten before.
00:24:33Yeah.
00:24:34The crowd roars
00:24:35with surprise
00:24:38as Camacho Jr. wobbles slightly.
00:24:42I just thought he stumbled
00:24:43off balance a little.
00:24:44I didn't think he was.
00:24:45That was a result of a punch.
00:24:47Totally agree.
00:24:47I think Camacho Jr.
00:24:50should start establishing
00:24:51his boxing skills.
00:24:52Box, box, box,
00:24:53and let the punch,
00:24:54the power come on his own.
00:24:56Don't just go out there
00:24:57reaching for a knockout.
00:24:57Keep going.
00:24:58Keep going.
00:24:59If you got power,
00:25:00the knockouts come to you
00:25:01if you're accurate.
00:25:02Fascinating that our scales tonight,
00:25:12unofficial, of course,
00:25:13HBO scales in the dressing rooms,
00:25:16established that Camacho Jr.
00:25:18outweighs Hutchinson by 13 pounds,
00:25:21154 to 141.
00:25:23Can you see a 13-pound difference
00:25:24in the ring?
00:25:25Yeah, I can.
00:25:25I can see it all right.
00:25:26Yeah?
00:25:27I can see it.
00:25:28There's a look at Camacho Sr.
00:25:30Not too far away
00:25:31from Camacho Jr.
00:25:37There's the perspective.
00:25:40That's a distance
00:25:40of about 9 or 10 feet.
00:25:47You got to keep boxing him.
00:25:49You know what you're doing.
00:25:50You can outbox this guy.
00:25:51We're doing all right.
00:25:58You can't get set, man.
00:26:04Right.
00:26:05Put a little bit more speed in it.
00:26:07A little more speed.
00:26:08A little more punches, man.
00:26:10Keep your hands up inside.
00:26:12Here's a look at that.
00:26:13Half trip, half stumble
00:26:15over Hutchinson's foot.
00:26:18Not the result of a clean punch.
00:26:20In round one,
00:26:23Camacho Jr. threw 57 punches.
00:26:26In round two,
00:26:28he threw only 39,
00:26:29and Hutchinson threw 58 punches.
00:26:32So at least in terms
00:26:33of sheer activity,
00:26:34it was Hutchinson
00:26:35who stepped up the pace
00:26:37in the second round.
00:26:40I think Camacho's corner
00:26:41has told him now to box.
00:26:43He can win this boxing match
00:26:44pretty easily
00:26:45if he doesn't turn it
00:26:46into a slugfest.
00:26:48The punching power
00:26:48is there for him
00:26:49if he just waits his time.
00:26:51You saw that when he jabbed.
00:26:52Hutchinson can only
00:26:53just curl up.
00:26:54Harold, how'd you score
00:26:55the first two rounds?
00:26:56Okay, Jim,
00:26:57I got a wrong lead
00:26:58in 19th and 19th.
00:26:59No question,
00:27:00Hector won the first round.
00:27:01Those beautiful combinations.
00:27:02But the second round,
00:27:03Joe Hutchinson
00:27:04just outworked him.
00:27:05He pressed forward,
00:27:06banged him in the body,
00:27:07and he kept
00:27:08hecked him backing up.
00:27:10Hank, don't punch.
00:27:11Don't punch.
00:27:15And remember,
00:27:17Camacho Jr.
00:27:17had to go back in later
00:27:19yesterday to lose
00:27:20a lot of weight.
00:27:21So he's probably wondering,
00:27:23where's my power?
00:27:24Sometimes that's what
00:27:25happened,
00:27:25trying to lose weight
00:27:26in the last minute.
00:27:28Well, he weighed in
00:27:29three quarters of a pound over
00:27:30and had to lose that.
00:27:36But you just don't go out
00:27:37and spit it away.
00:27:38No, it's always
00:27:39a distraction at least.
00:27:40No, it burns you out.
00:27:41Watch your heads.
00:27:43Those are the hours
00:27:46that you want to really
00:27:46rest and reserve,
00:27:49conserve your strength.
00:27:51When you're out there
00:27:51burning it out,
00:27:52trying to lose
00:27:52that extra pound.
00:27:53Shows up in the later rounds.
00:27:55But you don't just go out
00:27:56and lose three quarters.
00:27:57You try to go out
00:27:57and lose a pound.
00:27:59Or two.
00:28:00And these are guys
00:28:01who are in shape.
00:28:02To take a pound off
00:28:03of that kind of body,
00:28:04it's not an easy task.
00:28:06I just found
00:28:07where the weight difference is.
00:28:08George, look at the thickness
00:28:09of Camacho's legs.
00:28:10Not all that visible
00:28:11with those kinds of trunks,
00:28:13but when you see it,
00:28:14he's got big legs.
00:28:15You mean that wedding train?
00:28:17Yeah, there you go.
00:28:18That's exactly right.
00:28:21Camacho's got to be careful
00:28:22not to hurt his hands
00:28:23on the elbows of Hutchinson
00:28:24because a lot of those
00:28:24body shots he's throwing
00:28:26have gone right down
00:28:27there to go hard,
00:28:28elbows.
00:28:30He's finding his rhythm
00:28:32as a boxer now,
00:28:32Camacho Jr. is.
00:28:34Let him out.
00:28:35Let him out.
00:28:36I think he should have
00:28:36done that early on.
00:28:37Just look at the box.
00:28:39If Gaddy hadn't landed
00:28:40some of his hard shots
00:28:42on Hutchinson
00:28:43and Hutchinson
00:28:43hadn't taken him,
00:28:45he'd begin to wonder
00:28:46whether Camacho's power
00:28:48was real.
00:28:49But this is a guy
00:28:50who's very tough.
00:28:52As he said,
00:28:53I've got five kids
00:28:56and I'm hungry.
00:29:00Camacho is hungry
00:29:01for success and fame.
00:29:05That's two kind of hunger.
00:29:07Don't punch, don't punch.
00:29:08Step out, step out.
00:29:15That's it, that's it.
00:29:16Round three coming to a close
00:29:18and we have boxing competition
00:29:20in the theater
00:29:21at Madison Square Garden.
00:29:22Let's take a moment now
00:29:23to look at upcoming programs
00:29:24here on HBO Sports.
00:29:27For boxing,
00:29:28mark these dates
00:29:29on your calendar.
00:29:30Next Saturday night,
00:29:30November 11,
00:29:31Lennox Lewis defends
00:29:32his heavyweight crown
00:29:33against David Tua
00:29:33live on TVKO Pay-Per-View.
00:29:36December 1,
00:29:37HBO and Boxing After Dark
00:29:38showcase middleweight
00:29:39champion Bernard Hopkins
00:29:40taking on Antoine Eccles
00:29:42along with junior featherweight
00:29:43Marco Antonio Barrera
00:29:44facing Jorge Monsalvo.
00:29:46And then on December 2,
00:29:47undefeated junior middleweight
00:29:49champions Felix Trinidad
00:29:50and Fernando Vargas
00:29:51put their titles on the line
00:29:53also on TVKO Pay-Per-View.
00:29:56Real Sports with Brian Gumbel
00:29:57premieres November 14.
00:29:59Among the stories you'll see,
00:30:00a look at some of the most
00:30:01complicated and puzzling
00:30:02aspects of Joe DiMaggio,
00:30:04recently revealed in author
00:30:05Richard Ben Kramer's biography
00:30:06on the legendary
00:30:07Yankee Clipper.
00:30:08Then on December 20,
00:30:10HBO Sports of the 20th Century
00:30:11presents Playing the Field,
00:30:13Sports and Sex in America,
00:30:15a documentary that explores
00:30:16how sex has influenced
00:30:18the world of sports.
00:30:21Down.
00:30:21Down.
00:30:22Down.
00:30:22Down.
00:30:22Down.
00:30:23Down.
00:30:23Down.
00:30:23Down.
00:30:24Down.
00:30:25In the third round,
00:30:28by CompuBox numbers,
00:30:30Camacho Jr. 15 of 49,
00:30:31Hutchinson 19 of 42.
00:30:34Camacho Jr. landing only
00:30:3611 of 40 jabs
00:30:37through round number three.
00:30:39So, uh,
00:30:40it is by no means a mismatch
00:30:41despite the fact that
00:30:43Hutchinson took the fight
00:30:44on only seven days notice
00:30:46and is less than two months
00:30:47removed from his tough battle
00:30:49with Arturo Gatti in Montreal.
00:30:51A fight like that will keep you
00:30:53in shape for two years
00:30:54afterwards, believe me.
00:30:54This guy is acting like
00:30:57a Tasmanian devil.
00:30:59As I said earlier,
00:31:00no matter what he's hit with,
00:31:01he's not Detroit.
00:31:02He keeps coming.
00:31:03Well, his determination
00:31:05is totally evident.
00:31:08And there he is
00:31:08trading shots with Camacho.
00:31:10You don't want to do that,
00:31:11though.
00:31:12You want to stay on him
00:31:13and keep fighting him,
00:31:14but don't go into trading
00:31:15with Camacho Jr.
00:31:16because he is definitely
00:31:17a hard puncher.
00:31:21Catch him waiting
00:31:22and thinking
00:31:23and then throw your shots.
00:31:24When he starts trying
00:31:25to fight you,
00:31:26boxing.
00:31:28Larry, early in his career,
00:31:30before his fight
00:31:32with Rosario
00:31:33here in the Garden
00:31:34in 1986,
00:31:35would you say Camacho Sr.
00:31:37was a hard puncher?
00:31:39He wasn't a hard puncher,
00:31:40but he threw volumes of punches.
00:31:42He was a very fast puncher.
00:31:44Step, step, step.
00:31:45He just was quicker
00:31:47than speed.
00:31:50He was quicker
00:31:50than anybody.
00:31:51Yeah, and so that counted
00:31:53for a kind of power,
00:31:55if not pure knockout power.
00:31:57Oh!
00:31:58Vicious low blow
00:31:59right on the middle
00:32:01of the protective cup.
00:32:04And five minutes
00:32:08allowed to Joe Hutchinson here.
00:32:11Steve Smoger
00:32:11making that point
00:32:12immediately to the scoring table.
00:32:13Stop the regular clock
00:32:14on the five o'clock.
00:32:14And Hutchinson badly distressed
00:32:16by that low blow.
00:32:18A lot of it had,
00:32:19a lot of it had.
00:32:22What happened, George?
00:32:23One point, low blow.
00:32:24One point.
00:32:24That is.
00:32:25One point.
00:32:26But a lot of that
00:32:26is happening because
00:32:27his hand is hitting
00:32:29those elbows,
00:32:30and you're trying
00:32:30to get your hand
00:32:31out of the way
00:32:31of those elbows,
00:32:32and you'll go low.
00:32:34Sometimes, like,
00:32:34Camacho Jr.'s hands
00:32:35are pretty hurting now
00:32:36because he's thrown
00:32:37a lot of shots
00:32:38to those elbows
00:32:39of this man.
00:32:40You know, Hutchinson
00:32:41has had a very hard
00:32:43introduction
00:32:44to the upper levels
00:32:46of the game
00:32:47because he absorbed
00:32:48a number of really
00:32:50hard low blows
00:32:51from Gaddy as well.
00:32:53and the referee
00:32:55has already deducted
00:32:57a point from Camacho.
00:33:00Because Camacho
00:33:01was warned
00:33:01in the second round
00:33:02by Smoger,
00:33:03so now here
00:33:04in the fourth,
00:33:05a point is deducted.
00:33:06And we told you,
00:33:07it was a close
00:33:08competitive fight.
00:33:09That makes it
00:33:10even more so.
00:33:11now at this moment,
00:33:16professionalism dictates
00:33:19that Camacho
00:33:19make every effort
00:33:20to win the round
00:33:21so that it's a 9-9
00:33:22instead of 9-10.
00:33:25Well, he's gonna have
00:33:25to get some instructions
00:33:26from the corner
00:33:27to let him understand
00:33:27that no matter
00:33:28what he does,
00:33:29he's gotta be
00:33:29further ahead
00:33:30than he thought he was.
00:33:31Get further ahead.
00:33:35You saw Hutchinson's arm
00:33:37on the back of Camacho's head
00:33:39pulling downward
00:33:40as Camacho hit him
00:33:41with the low blow.
00:33:42But I don't think
00:33:43Hutchinson's force
00:33:44on Camacho
00:33:45was enough
00:33:46to produce the low blow
00:33:47all by itself.
00:33:48You see how Hutchinson
00:33:49uses his elbows
00:33:50real good?
00:33:51Yep.
00:33:51Make you hurt your hands,
00:33:53your knuckles are sore.
00:33:54You can believe
00:33:54Camacho Jr. is having
00:33:56some sole knuckles now.
00:33:58He's looking for a place
00:33:59to put those punches.
00:34:02Hit those arms again.
00:34:05Three-punch combination
00:34:06followed by a little jab
00:34:08and he steps out.
00:34:09Very good work
00:34:10by Camacho.
00:34:11Yeah, but those punches
00:34:13are going on.
00:34:13And there's a low blow
00:34:13by Hutchinson right there
00:34:15and Camacho Jr. looked
00:34:17at Smoker as if he expected
00:34:18him to do something
00:34:19about that low blow
00:34:20and Hutchinson got away
00:34:21and now Smoker goes
00:34:22to Hutchinson's corner
00:34:23to remind him
00:34:24that he too
00:34:25has to keep his punches up.
00:34:31Fain him,
00:34:32make him duck,
00:34:33step over.
00:34:34He's always ducking
00:34:36this way.
00:34:37Fain him,
00:34:37make him duck,
00:34:38you step over
00:34:39and bang him.
00:34:40Okay.
00:34:41You know what a fain is,
00:34:42don't you?
00:34:42Yeah.
00:34:43You're not going
00:34:44to punch his inside.
00:34:45Well, I better.
00:34:46I better.
00:34:46There you go.
00:34:47You're not going
00:34:48to punch his inside.
00:34:49You're all right.
00:34:51We won all the rounds
00:34:52even though that was
00:34:53a low blow.
00:34:54That happens in boxing.
00:34:56That's okay.
00:34:59Let's breathe in.
00:35:01Breathe in through
00:35:02the nose and your mouth.
00:35:03Okay.
00:35:06Interested observer
00:35:07at ringside,
00:35:08refugee from the heavyweight division.
00:35:11And later this evening,
00:35:13between fights,
00:35:14we'll be talking
00:35:14with two other heavyweights,
00:35:16the men who will contest
00:35:17the heavyweight championship
00:35:19next Saturday night
00:35:20in Las Vegas.
00:35:20Lennox Lewis and David Tua
00:35:22standing by in Vegas
00:35:23for a live conversation
00:35:24between fights.
00:35:25Tyson is said
00:35:27to be a big fan
00:35:28of Shane Mosley,
00:35:29which I presume
00:35:31is why he's here.
00:35:32If you're a purist
00:35:33as a fighter
00:35:34and Mike's background
00:35:35gives him that identity,
00:35:37then you have to love
00:35:38Shane Mosley,
00:35:39who's a throwback.
00:35:40He fights like the fighters
00:35:41you might have seen
00:35:42in the 50s and 60s.
00:35:50Macho is trying to establish
00:35:52his boxing superiority,
00:35:53but he keeps going back
00:35:54to the power punches.
00:35:55You notice when he throws
00:35:56a hard shot,
00:35:57nothing comes afterwards.
00:36:05Through the first four rounds,
00:36:07the CompuBox numbers
00:36:08were relatively even,
00:36:09a small margin for Camacho
00:36:11in terms of number
00:36:12of punches landed.
00:36:13They had both thrown
00:36:14just about the same amount.
00:36:15A point has been deducted
00:36:17from Camacho for low blows,
00:36:18so he's in a competitive bout here
00:36:20as we reach the fifth
00:36:21of a scheduled test.
00:36:23Hutcheson's corner
00:36:27told him to faint
00:36:28and make Camacho step over
00:36:30to his, uh,
00:36:31to Hutchinson's right
00:36:33and then throw that hook.
00:36:35He's fainting,
00:36:36but he's not throwing the hook.
00:36:38Hey!
00:36:39Camacho is pretty smart.
00:36:40He goes over there
00:36:41every now and then
00:36:41he bends over,
00:36:42but then periodically
00:36:43throws a straight left hand
00:36:45to make you think,
00:36:46you better not faint me,
00:36:47I'm gonna get you.
00:36:49There's a little rhythm
00:36:50to that madness.
00:36:51Hold your hand and give it back.
00:36:56Trading shots.
00:36:59Joe Hutchinson determined
00:37:01to give as good as he gets.
00:37:04Following Camacho Jr.
00:37:05around the ring.
00:37:07Push him on, push him on.
00:37:09Hey, don't punch!
00:37:11Hutchinson is committed
00:37:12to taking the shots.
00:37:18Camacho hasn't land
00:37:19one straight shot tonight.
00:37:22That's where he's been
00:37:22getting his knockouts
00:37:23with that straight left hand.
00:37:26All coming back
00:37:26with a hook afterwards.
00:37:27He hasn't been able
00:37:28to land one straight
00:37:29left hand yet.
00:37:31When he does,
00:37:32he can change things.
00:37:33Everything is on the side
00:37:34of the head.
00:37:35Leaping right hook
00:37:36by the southpaw Hutchinson.
00:37:40He's able to land
00:37:41that straight left hand.
00:37:42You can see a good,
00:37:44a different fight.
00:37:46He's trying his best
00:37:47to step out there
00:37:48and wait for it.
00:37:48That was the first one.
00:37:50It wasn't quite straight,
00:37:51but he's starting to get in.
00:37:53And now Camacho gets
00:38:10the five-minute time limit.
00:38:12Stop the clock.
00:38:13Five-minute clock.
00:38:15With only five seconds
00:38:16remaining in the round.
00:38:19And let's take a look
00:38:20at the punch.
00:38:21It was borderline,
00:38:26but a little bit south.
00:38:28But this rest
00:38:28does not benefit
00:38:29Camacho Jr.
00:38:31He's got this guy
00:38:32on the run.
00:38:32He's got him a little weak.
00:38:34He should be on his case now.
00:38:36Five minutes
00:38:37hurts Camacho Jr.
00:38:38But he may get a point
00:38:40out of this,
00:38:40and that would be worth it.
00:38:42One point.
00:38:42I'll take a point.
00:38:43And there's the point.
00:38:44One point deducted
00:38:45from Hutchinson
00:38:46because he had been warned.
00:38:48Good call.
00:38:53So that evens the penalties
00:38:55at a point apiece.
00:39:01And now we're halfway
00:39:03through the bout.
00:39:03Coming up between fights,
00:39:10a live conversation
00:39:11with Lennox Lewis
00:39:12and David Tua
00:39:13standing by
00:39:15at separate locations
00:39:16in Las Vegas.
00:39:17We'll talk to both of them
00:39:18at the same time.
00:39:19And then,
00:39:20when we're finished
00:39:21talking to Lennox
00:39:22and David
00:39:22and looking ahead
00:39:23to next Saturday night,
00:39:24we'll have Shane Mosley
00:39:25as he enters the ring
00:39:26for the first time
00:39:27since his stirring victory
00:39:29over Ascadela
00:39:30in June 17,
00:39:31fighting against
00:39:32fellow Southern Californian
00:39:33Antonio Diaz
00:39:34as Mosley makes
00:39:36his pilgrimage
00:39:36to the Garden
00:39:37after having risen
00:39:38to the top
00:39:39of some pound-for-pound lists.
00:39:43Show us for the champions.
00:39:46Come on.
00:39:47Come on.
00:39:47Come on, baby.
00:39:48You don't want it down there.
00:39:50Keep banging it down there.
00:39:50Okay?
00:39:54Come on.
00:39:56Come on.
00:39:58Come on.
00:39:58Let's go.
00:39:59Let's go.
00:39:59Let's go.
00:40:02Camacho Jr.,
00:40:04averaging by CompuBox numbers,
00:40:06just 13 jabs per round attempted.
00:40:10So, he's been more interested
00:40:12in fighting than in boxing
00:40:14through the first five rounds, George.
00:40:17Hutchinson can take a shot like this
00:40:19and keep fighting
00:40:20seven days' notice.
00:40:22What would he do
00:40:22if he was in training for a month?
00:40:25Well, he says he's a gym rat
00:40:27and never leaves the gym.
00:40:28Increasingly, incidentally,
00:40:29the fighters we find
00:40:31at the top of the sports
00:40:32are the ones who train year-round
00:40:35whether or not they have a fight.
00:40:37Evidently, he's won Hutchinson.
00:40:39Three.
00:40:40Camacho had him going pretty good
00:40:41with those straight left hands.
00:40:43He was walking right into them.
00:40:44So that wrist broken.
00:40:46So, Hutchinson said,
00:40:48after the Gotti fight,
00:40:49I didn't take any time off.
00:40:50I went right back into the gym
00:40:51because I had a hunch
00:40:52something good might happen
00:40:54as the result of it.
00:40:55so his business instincts
00:40:56were entirely correct.
00:40:58And he's had a manager
00:40:59who has stuck with him
00:41:00for five or six years
00:41:02despite the fact
00:41:03that the guy
00:41:03hadn't made any money.
00:41:06That's the kind of loyalty
00:41:08that's priceless in this sport.
00:41:14Camacho Jr. looking at Smoker
00:41:16once again urges the fighters
00:41:19to keep him up.
00:41:22Camacho Jr. is doing good
00:41:24when he throws that straight
00:41:25left hand.
00:41:27Whenever he stays right with it,
00:41:29he's got payday coming.
00:41:32Let him out.
00:41:33Let him out.
00:41:34Don't punch.
00:41:43Right hand for Hutchinson.
00:41:45Don't punch, don't punch.
00:41:46Step, step.
00:41:49Generally speaking,
00:41:50when Hutchinson has landed,
00:41:51he's landed one punch at a time.
00:41:54Camacho has been able
00:41:55to land combinations.
00:41:56Now he's got him going up.
00:41:58Camacho's got to start
00:41:59sticking with his jab,
00:42:00moving around
00:42:01and trying to effectively...
00:42:02Jim, there's a cut
00:42:03by the right eye of Hutchinson.
00:42:07Hard to say at this point
00:42:09how dangerous it is.
00:42:11Smoker taking a look at it.
00:42:12Camacho going at it with the left hand.
00:42:15That straight left
00:42:16is his payday.
00:42:18If he can just stick
00:42:19with a little jab,
00:42:20go down to the body
00:42:20a few times to confuse him,
00:42:22then he's got payday.
00:42:24Hutchinson's better...
00:42:25Oh, a big left hand
00:42:27by Camacho.
00:42:28He's got to stop
00:42:29waiting around
00:42:29for Camacho to hit him
00:42:30because he is going
00:42:31to hit him.
00:42:32That is again.
00:42:39Hutchinson getting beaten
00:42:41to the punch
00:42:41repeatedly by Camacho Jr.
00:42:45Turned into the fight
00:42:46of his life.
00:42:47I guess you don't expect it
00:42:48in your hometown, New York.
00:42:52Kind of amazing to me
00:42:55that this is the first time
00:42:56Jr. has ever fought in New York.
00:42:57He's walking right into it.
00:43:05His corner better tell him
00:43:06to stop walking into this guy.
00:43:08Or if you're going to do it,
00:43:09keep your hands up.
00:43:10Accidental butt.
00:43:11Tell him to wait too long.
00:43:15Accidental butt.
00:43:17Smoker telling both corners
00:43:18that the cut is the result
00:43:19of an accidental butt.
00:43:23You okay?
00:43:24Come on, let's start digging.
00:43:25I'd like to see that
00:43:26accidental butt.
00:43:28This guy's been
00:43:28kicking a lot of straight lefts.
00:43:32Yeah.
00:43:35Take it all.
00:43:38Accidental head butt.
00:43:41Smoker telling both corners
00:43:42that the cut is the result
00:43:43of an accidental head butt,
00:43:44and we have a videotape replay
00:43:46of what we think
00:43:47might be the punch
00:43:49that caused the cut.
00:43:51I suck it up.
00:43:52It's you to me.
00:43:53Now, peace in.
00:43:54Let's go.
00:43:54You to me.
00:43:55When are we going to see
00:43:55that reflux?
00:43:57No, wait on it.
00:43:57Get the mouthfees in?
00:43:58Yeah.
00:43:59Okay, let's go.
00:44:01Could this have been
00:44:01the punch that caused it?
00:44:05Or could that have been
00:44:05the gut, the butt that caused it?
00:44:08That could have been
00:44:08the butt that caused it
00:44:09if, in fact,
00:44:10the smoker's right
00:44:10and it was the product
00:44:12of an accidental butt.
00:44:14Don't punch.
00:44:15Don't punch.
00:44:15So many repeated
00:44:17straight lefts
00:44:18on the side of that face.
00:44:19There's no way
00:44:20you can conclude.
00:44:22Come to an absolute conclusion
00:44:23that it was a butt.
00:44:26Harold Lederman,
00:44:26how do you have it through six?
00:44:27Okay, Jim.
00:44:28I got it.
00:44:294-1-1, 58-54,
00:44:31Hector Camacho Jr.
00:44:32I gave Joe Hutchinson
00:44:33the second round,
00:44:34but the rest of the fight,
00:44:35I'm just impressed
00:44:36by Hector's speed,
00:44:37by his combinations.
00:44:38Most of the time,
00:44:39he throws two, three,
00:44:40four shots at a time.
00:44:41I think he's learning
00:44:41to clean a heart of punches,
00:44:43and he's learning his fight.
00:44:43You got to call that
00:44:45round four,
00:44:469-9,
00:44:47because I thought
00:44:47Hector 1 lost the point.
00:44:49The other round,
00:44:49they called 10-8.
00:44:50That's the fifth round,
00:44:51because Joe Hutchinson
00:44:52lost it and lost the point.
00:44:56When you're going to
00:44:56follow a guy like Camacho
00:44:58around,
00:44:58you got to move your head
00:44:59left, right, left, right,
00:45:00or right, left, right, left.
00:45:02You just can't walk into him
00:45:03as Hutchinson is doing.
00:45:05Hutchinson is as tough
00:45:06as male.
00:45:08And if you're going to
00:45:08stalk and get into range,
00:45:10throw a punch when you arrive.
00:45:12Don't just step into range
00:45:13and take a punch.
00:45:13You got to step into range
00:45:14for while you're punching.
00:45:16Yeah, because all too often,
00:45:18Hutchinson has walked into range
00:45:20and allowed Camacho
00:45:21to start the exchange
00:45:23by hitting him.
00:45:23He's doing a good job
00:45:24of jabbing now.
00:45:25Hutchinson just landed
00:45:26a good jab,
00:45:28another good jab.
00:45:31Another he jabs
00:45:31is an easy entry.
00:45:35Got to keep your jab up.
00:45:36The corner should tell Hutchinson.
00:45:37Hutchinson is turning to talk to Smogor.
00:45:46Both fighters are getting to know
00:45:47Steve Smogor pretty well.
00:45:54Sometimes when you look over
00:45:55on the other side of the corner
00:45:56and you see a guy with those
00:45:57kind of trunks on,
00:45:59you just keep following him
00:46:00because you believe he can't fight.
00:46:01But sometimes those trunks
00:46:03will fool you.
00:46:08Camacho is starting
00:46:08to stand his ground
00:46:09a little bit more now
00:46:10looking for room to punch.
00:46:12That was the one thing
00:46:13missing from your career,
00:46:15George, unusual trunks.
00:46:17Would have loved to have seen
00:46:18what you might have looked like
00:46:19in a pair of trunks like this.
00:46:21Huh?
00:46:21Me too.
00:46:22Yeah, yeah, right.
00:46:23George, you think those trunks
00:46:25are a distraction?
00:46:26Hutchinson?
00:46:27Yeah, he keeps telling him
00:46:28that he's up against someone
00:46:29that can't fight.
00:46:31If only he would have
00:46:32on some solid trunks,
00:46:33maybe Hutchinson would
00:46:34barb and weave a little more.
00:46:36I think he's afraid
00:46:36to get tangled up in them,
00:46:38you know, strunks.
00:46:40Hutchinson got a good
00:46:41combination that time.
00:46:45Don't punch, don't punch.
00:46:55Boy, that power
00:46:56that Camacho Jr. has
00:46:57is starting to tail
00:46:58on Hutchinson now.
00:46:59And he definitely has
00:47:00the greater power of the two
00:47:01because Hutchinson
00:47:01caught Camacho Jr. flush
00:47:03with a wide right hand there
00:47:05and Camacho Jr. wasn't even moved.
00:47:10Larry, what about
00:47:11the 140-pound weight class
00:47:13where these two guys
00:47:13are fighting right now?
00:47:14A lot of good fighters here.
00:47:16Costezou, widely considered
00:47:17the champion
00:47:19of the junior welterweight division.
00:47:21Shamba Mitchell and Zab Judah
00:47:23both have belts.
00:47:24Antonio Diaz,
00:47:26one of the rising forces
00:47:28who will be moving up
00:47:29to welterweight
00:47:30in the feature attraction
00:47:32and another up-and-coming fighter,
00:47:35Hector Camacho Jr.
00:47:37Some real talent there.
00:47:39Camacho Jr. is the mandatory
00:47:41challenger for Shamba Mitchell's
00:47:42version of the 140-pound title.
00:47:45And the governing body
00:47:46is hoping and expecting
00:47:47that Camacho Jr. may fight
00:47:49Shamba Mitchell next.
00:47:50I don't think that's going
00:47:51to happen, Jim.
00:47:52His management has made it clear
00:47:54that they think he's still young,
00:47:57still unproven,
00:47:59needs three, four, five,
00:48:01six more fights
00:48:02over the next year
00:48:03before they're going to step up
00:48:05to fight for a title.
00:48:07Unless, of course,
00:48:09it becomes a big money attraction.
00:48:12So, in other words,
00:48:15if he's not likely
00:48:16to fight Shamba Mitchell
00:48:17in the next several months,
00:48:19there's even less chance
00:48:20you're going to see him
00:48:20anytime soon
00:48:21against the Casta Zoo
00:48:22or Zab Judah.
00:48:24This fight is getting
00:48:24interesting now.
00:48:25Yep.
00:48:25If Hutchinson's going to win
00:48:28this thing,
00:48:29he's got to step up
00:48:30his pace right now.
00:48:31Stop getting hit.
00:48:33But Camacho keeps hitting him
00:48:35accurately and hard.
00:48:37Quick, quick,
00:48:38step back, step back.
00:48:41Hector Camacho Jr.
00:48:42has chosen the eighth round
00:48:44to step up the aggression.
00:48:46He's doing it.
00:48:48This is when these
00:48:49seven days' notice
00:48:50and ten days' notice
00:48:51to start to go against you.
00:48:53These are the championship rounds.
00:48:55Don't punch, don't punch,
00:48:56don't punch.
00:48:58For the first time,
00:49:00Hutchinson bumped him
00:49:01to the ropes.
00:49:02He hadn't been doing
00:49:02that all night.
00:49:04Starting to bump
00:49:05into the ropes.
00:49:14Camacho is still laying
00:49:15in the right and the left
00:49:16to the body.
00:49:18And Hutchinson continues
00:49:19to come forward
00:49:19without throwing punches,
00:49:21giving Camacho a chance
00:49:22to pop him as he arrives.
00:49:24He's a good fighter.
00:49:25Hutchinson.
00:49:26Tough fighter.
00:49:27Don't punch, don't punch.
00:49:31Just needs to be
00:49:32a little bit more assertive
00:49:33about trying to be first
00:49:34in his exchanges
00:49:36with this opponent.
00:49:37Every time the referee
00:49:38said go,
00:49:38he should throw a shot.
00:49:39Don't walk with your hands there.
00:49:41Do something.
00:49:42As he did then.
00:49:45Larry,
00:49:45there's also been talk
00:49:46of a possible Camacho Jr.
00:49:48matchup with Arturo Gatti.
00:49:49What do you think of that?
00:49:50Don't punch.
00:49:51Well, Gatti might fight.
00:49:53Mosley might fight
00:49:55Delahoya.
00:49:55I think the best fight
00:49:57of those three,
00:49:59the most competitive fight
00:50:01would be him
00:50:02against Camacho Jr.
00:50:04It would also be
00:50:05probably a big event
00:50:06at Madison Square Garden.
00:50:08Camacho Jr.
00:50:09Keeps fighting like this.
00:50:10He can whip all of those guys.
00:50:13Anytime, anywhere.
00:50:14George, let's not get
00:50:15too excited about this.
00:50:18As he put it,
00:50:19his dad is a superstar.
00:50:21He's just a shooting star.
00:50:22He ain't there yet.
00:50:23I'm telling you,
00:50:24this guy's got the goods.
00:50:25High praise from George Foreman
00:50:29for Hector Camacho Jr.
00:50:31Making his first HBO appearance
00:50:34fighting here
00:50:35in the 140-pound weight class
00:50:36with title aspirations
00:50:38in the 135, 140,
00:50:41and 147-pound division.
00:50:43I don't know how he could
00:50:45fight at 135.
00:50:47This guy's got the goods.
00:50:48It doesn't matter
00:50:48which weight he decides
00:50:49to fight in.
00:50:50He is the guy.
00:50:52Let him out, Joe.
00:50:53Let him out.
00:50:53Yeah, it's hard to imagine
00:50:54with those legs,
00:50:55and you can't see them well
00:50:57because of the trunks,
00:50:58but making 135
00:50:59has got to be a challenge.
00:51:01It would just be a stunt
00:51:03is what it would be.
00:51:09Steve Smoger
00:51:10walking Joe Hutchinson
00:51:14part of the way back
00:51:15to the ring
00:51:15after a big eighth round
00:51:17for Camacho Jr.
00:51:21We're perfect.
00:51:22We won every round.
00:51:23We're way ahead,
00:51:48and he's cut.
00:51:49Give me some water.
00:51:51Antonio Diaz
00:51:57of Coatella, California
00:51:58came a long way,
00:52:00and as he said,
00:52:01I didn't fly all the way
00:52:02from California to lose.
00:52:04He's known Shane Mosley
00:52:06since he was a kid,
00:52:07and his trainer,
00:52:08Lee Espinosa,
00:52:09has a son
00:52:10who beat Mosley
00:52:11in the amateurs
00:52:12when Mosley was
00:52:13a 12-year-old junior.
00:52:15Don't smack, Jr.
00:52:17In fact, Espinosa's son
00:52:19reportedly beat both Mosley
00:52:22and De La Hoya
00:52:23when they were
00:52:24little kid amateurs.
00:52:26Hutchinson is starting
00:52:27to move his head
00:52:28just a little bit now,
00:52:29but he stopped again.
00:52:30And as he balls and weave
00:52:32and gets in,
00:52:32he does a good job.
00:52:34Eighth round was a bad one
00:52:36for Hutchinson.
00:52:37Five out of 27
00:52:38by CompuBox numbers
00:52:39against 19 out of 36
00:52:41for Camacho,
00:52:42who for the first time
00:52:43in the fight
00:52:43landed more than 50%
00:52:45of his shots.
00:52:46Harold, how do you have it?
00:52:47Okay, Jim,
00:52:48I think Hector's adding
00:52:49to his lead.
00:52:5078-72,
00:52:526-1,
00:52:53one even,
00:52:54Hector Camacho, Jr.
00:52:55Jim, I didn't score
00:52:56a round even,
00:52:57but it becomes an even round
00:52:58when Hector Camacho, Jr.
00:53:00lost a point
00:53:00in the fourth round.
00:53:02His double-S team
00:53:02Schmolder, you know,
00:53:04took a point away
00:53:04so it becomes 9-9.
00:53:06But in any case,
00:53:07the last couple of rounds,
00:53:08Joe Hutchinson's doing
00:53:08just, all he's doing
00:53:10is holding, really.
00:53:11Camacho landing
00:53:12all the shots.
00:53:13As Joe Hutchinson
00:53:14presses forward,
00:53:14he keeps running
00:53:15into either a right hook
00:53:16or a straight left hand.
00:53:17So Hector Camacho, Jr.
00:53:19basically on hand speed.
00:53:21Camacho, Jr.
00:53:21did well enough
00:53:22in the eighth round
00:53:23that when he glanced
00:53:24over at his father
00:53:25between rounds
00:53:25to see if Camacho, Sr.
00:53:27would offer any advice,
00:53:28Camacho, Sr.
00:53:29just sort of
00:53:29shrugged his shoulders
00:53:30as if to say,
00:53:31what can I tell you?
00:53:32That was good.
00:53:35At this point,
00:53:36you've got to make them
00:53:36remember you and love you,
00:53:38so you better get a knockout
00:53:39if it's there.
00:53:40And that's what Camacho
00:53:41got to make certain tonight.
00:53:43I don't think
00:53:43the knockout is there, George.
00:53:45It's there.
00:53:45All you've got to do
00:53:46is double up
00:53:46on that straight left hand.
00:53:49You had him going
00:53:49before they penalized
00:53:50the other guy
00:53:51for the low blow.
00:53:54Hector Camacho
00:53:55in his 29 previous fights
00:53:57only has one knockout
00:53:59just passed the fifth round.
00:54:00There it is.
00:54:01There it is right there again.
00:54:08I mean, step, step, step, step, step.
00:54:14When you're trying to make a point,
00:54:15you just can't go out there
00:54:16and win a decision.
00:54:19Well, but you know, George,
00:54:21there are some guys
00:54:22that just won't go.
00:54:23And if this kid stood up
00:54:25for 10 rounds to Gaddy,
00:54:27he's got a chin
00:54:29that was forged
00:54:31in Gary, Indiana,
00:54:33even if he comes
00:54:34from Indianapolis.
00:54:35There you go.
00:54:36That's why I don't think
00:54:37the knockout is there.
00:54:39He's just too strong
00:54:40and too durable.
00:54:40Joe Hutchinson is one of those
00:54:57dedicated, workman-like fighters
00:54:59who is just good enough
00:55:01to lose.
00:55:02The guys like
00:55:02Hector Camacho, Jr.
00:55:04and Arturo Gatti,
00:55:05his last two opponents.
00:55:06We won the fight already.
00:55:17Last round coming up.
00:55:18We have nothing to worry about.
00:55:19Last round.
00:55:20Tenth and final.
00:55:24Last one, right?
00:55:29Okay.
00:55:32Last one, Donnie, Joey.
00:55:36Easy with the water, man.
00:55:37Okay.
00:55:38Hold over, Joe.
00:55:40Touch him in the center.
00:55:41Lights pass.
00:55:42You've got to fight
00:55:43very intelligently.
00:55:44It's the last round.
00:55:45Fight smart.
00:55:46Let's go.
00:55:49All right?
00:55:54Come on, you can take it.
00:55:55Throw everything to Joe.
00:55:56You've got to throw everything
00:55:56to the power.
00:55:57Go upstairs and downstairs.
00:55:58I'm here, Kyle.
00:55:59Let's go.
00:56:00Go upstairs and downstairs.
00:56:00Ladies and gentlemen,
00:56:01this is the team
00:56:02and the final round.
00:56:06Tenth and final round
00:56:12for Joe Hutchinson
00:56:14and Hector Camacho, Jr.
00:56:16And Hutchinson now
00:56:17fully in survival mode
00:56:19through only 19 punches
00:56:21in the ninth round
00:56:21by CompuBox estimation.
00:56:24And Camacho was cruising.
00:56:2617 out of 32,
00:56:27again landing
00:56:27more than half his shots.
00:56:29So it has become,
00:56:31to some extent,
00:56:33target practice
00:56:34for Camacho, Jr.,
00:56:35who nods at me
00:56:37to let me know
00:56:38that he enjoyed
00:56:39that comment
00:56:39and agrees
00:56:40that it's sort of
00:56:41target practice
00:56:42at this point.
00:56:43Frank, don't punch.
00:56:44Don't punch.
00:56:44That Hutchinson
00:56:45is a tough cookie.
00:56:46He's absorbed some punching
00:56:48like I've never seen
00:56:49before in that weight division.
00:56:53But you don't finish
00:56:54on your toes like that
00:56:56and expect people
00:56:56to come back at you.
00:56:57Frank, don't punch.
00:56:58Don't punch.
00:56:59Cheer for you.
00:57:00You've got to do it.
00:57:00Go.
00:57:01Go.
00:57:01Go.
00:57:02Well, I think that's...
00:57:05Go ahead.
00:57:06Excuse me.
00:57:07You're saying, George,
00:57:08that if he doesn't
00:57:08somehow get a knockout
00:57:10in all the last two minutes
00:57:11that he's a disappointment?
00:57:13No, no, no.
00:57:13Just go for a knockout anyway.
00:57:15People can smell you trying.
00:57:16But don't cruise in.
00:57:18You don't want to do that.
00:57:23Camacho jumping out
00:57:25of the way
00:57:25of Hutchinson's attempts.
00:57:28Well, you're right, George,
00:57:29because the crowd's getting
00:57:30a little restless
00:57:32because he's not making
00:57:33an effort here.
00:57:34Yeah, you've got to make
00:57:35them love you.
00:57:36You've got to make them love you
00:57:37if you want them to buy tickets.
00:57:40Well, you know,
00:57:41but he's got the name.
00:57:44What's in the name?
00:57:45He's going to make
00:57:46a couple hundred thousand dollars
00:57:47more than if he was
00:57:49the same fighter
00:57:50without this name.
00:57:51Yeah, it doesn't hurt
00:57:52to have a good name.
00:57:53And if he's true
00:57:54to his pre-fight form,
00:57:55he's going to tell us
00:57:56after the fight
00:57:57that he's the reason
00:57:58the place was sold out
00:57:59because in the pre-fight promotion,
00:58:02he was unabashed
00:58:03in saying,
00:58:03hey, Mosley's a great champion,
00:58:04but he's dull.
00:58:05I'm the entertainer.
00:58:06I'm the one
00:58:07who's selling this event.
00:58:08Yeah, well,
00:58:09calling Mosley dull
00:58:10is like calling
00:58:13electricity cotton.
00:58:17Hey!
00:58:18Don't punch,
00:58:18don't punch.
00:58:19Step out, Joey.
00:58:20Watch him up.
00:58:20Watch him.
00:58:21Watch him.
00:58:21Watch him.
00:58:21Watch him.
00:58:22Watch him.
00:58:22Watch him.
00:58:23Watch him.
00:58:23Watch him.
00:58:23Watch him.
00:58:24Watch him.
00:58:24Watch him.
00:58:25Watch him.
00:58:25Watch him.
00:58:26Watch him.
00:58:26Calling Mosley dull
00:58:30may be like calling
00:58:31Michelangelo an artisan
00:58:33or a draftsman.
00:58:37There's nothing dull
00:58:38about the way Shane fights.
00:58:43They're not going
00:58:51to Macho
00:58:52because he's fought
00:58:54a bad fight.
00:58:55He's fought a good fight.
00:58:56There's some booing
00:58:57out there
00:58:57because they want
00:58:58to see him close
00:58:59the show with style.
00:59:01Which is exactly
00:59:02what George Foreman
00:59:03was recommending.
00:59:04Break, step back.
00:59:04This is it, baby.
00:59:05This is it.
00:59:05Nobody understands
00:59:06the audience
00:59:07better than Big George.
00:59:08No, no, no.
00:59:09That's it.
00:59:13Hutchison has proven
00:59:14a lot tonight.
00:59:15He's tough.
00:59:16He is as tough
00:59:17as they come.
00:59:18And he's willing.
00:59:19And right at the very end
00:59:21and right at the very end
00:59:21with maybe a second
00:59:22left in the fight
00:59:23there was a clash
00:59:24of heads
00:59:25and Camacho
00:59:26may have a slight cut
00:59:28on his right eyebrow.
00:59:29Yep.
00:59:30Yeah.
00:59:31Well, you got to fight it out.
00:59:32You just can't stop it.
00:59:32He's a little bit
00:59:33nonplussed about it.
00:59:34Yep.
00:59:34Camacho Jr. thinking,
00:59:36ah, you know,
00:59:36I'm not quite as pretty.
00:59:41Alright, let's take a look
00:59:42back at a few significant
00:59:43moments from early
00:59:44in the fight.
00:59:45In the fourth round,
00:59:47Camacho Jr. was guilty
00:59:48of an egregious low blow.
00:59:50You saw it there.
00:59:51He had a point deducted
00:59:52at that moment.
00:59:53It seemed like
00:59:53a fairly close fight.
00:59:55In the fifth round,
00:59:56however,
00:59:57Camacho Jr. got the point back
00:59:59when Hutchinson hit him
01:00:00with a low blow
01:00:01and because Joe
01:00:02had been warned in advance,
01:00:04he had a point deducted
01:00:05as well.
01:00:06Then in the sixth round,
01:00:07we think Steve Smoker
01:00:08was right
01:00:09and we think this was
01:00:10the accidental headbutt
01:00:12that caused that cut
01:00:13on the eye of Joe
01:00:15Hutchinson.
01:00:15You can see it.
01:00:16Smoker was right
01:00:17on the money.
01:00:18It was indeed
01:00:18an accidental headbutt
01:00:19that caused that bleeding.
01:00:22But down the stretch,
01:00:24Camacho Jr. throwing
01:00:25less than 40 punches
01:00:27around with landing
01:00:27more than half of them
01:00:29and Hutchinson,
01:00:31perhaps losing his energy
01:00:33after having taken
01:00:34the fight on only
01:00:34seven days' notice,
01:00:36wasn't able to put together
01:00:37much output
01:00:37in the closing rounds.
01:00:39He can't punch.
01:00:40He can't punch a lick.
01:00:41Joe says he can't
01:00:43punch a lick, George.
01:00:43He can punch in more
01:00:44than a lick.
01:00:45He's got a little bit
01:00:46of a kick.
01:00:50Difference of opinion.
01:00:51Hutchinson is somewhat
01:00:52of a Hercules, though.
01:00:53This guy can take it.
01:00:59Now, he gives you
01:01:00an honest answer.
01:01:01He thought that Gaddy
01:01:03punched like a mule.
01:01:04Let's go to Michael Buffer
01:01:05for the official particular.
01:01:06Ladies and gentlemen,
01:01:08here at Madison Square Garden,
01:01:10we go to the Budweiser
01:01:11scorecards.
01:01:12Melvina Latham scores
01:01:13about 96 to 92.
01:01:16Steve Weisfeld has it
01:01:1797 to 91.
01:01:20And Larry Hazard Jr.
01:01:22scores it 98 to 90,
01:01:23all for the winner
01:01:24by unanimous decision.
01:01:26He's still undefeated.
01:01:28It's junior time.
01:01:29Hector Macho Camacho Jr.
01:01:32Something less than
01:01:39unanimous acclaim
01:01:40for Camacho Jr.
01:01:43as he gets to 30 and 0.
01:01:44When you do your best,
01:01:45you leave out of the ring
01:01:46and raise your hand.
01:01:49Final punch to add numbers.
01:01:50Hutchinson, 112 out of 391.
01:01:54Representative effort,
01:01:55but not enough to beat
01:01:56Camacho Jr.,
01:01:57who was landing combinations
01:01:59while Hutchinson was landing
01:02:00one punch at a time.
01:02:02That was the biggest difference
01:02:03in the fight.
01:02:04157 out of 407
01:02:06for Camacho Jr.
01:02:07And right now,
01:02:08Larry stands by
01:02:09with Hector Jr.
01:02:11All right.
01:02:12Thank you, Jim.
01:02:14Congratulations, Hector.
01:02:16Are you disappointed
01:02:17that you didn't go out
01:02:19in greater style?
01:02:20Not just happen with the win,
01:02:21you know?
01:02:22This is like a savvy
01:02:23fighting learning process.
01:02:24We got the win
01:02:25and we move on.
01:02:26So even though
01:02:27there were some dissatisfied
01:02:29fans out there
01:02:30who wanted to see you
01:02:31make a big effort
01:02:33and a dramatic conclusion,
01:02:34you feel comfortable.
01:02:35Yeah, I feel comfortable
01:02:36with the win.
01:02:36I mean, the fans enjoy.
01:02:38I mean, they got a boo,
01:02:39a cheer, the same thing.
01:02:40They love it.
01:02:42You should know, Larry.
01:02:42All right.
01:02:43You're one of the top-ranked
01:02:44junior welterweights.
01:02:45You could fight for a title.
01:02:47Do you think you're ready yet
01:02:48or do you think
01:02:49you still need some seasoning?
01:02:51I mean,
01:02:52if I keep seasoning,
01:02:52these champions are in trouble.
01:02:54I'm ready now.
01:02:55For who else?
01:02:55I'm not leaving
01:02:55up to Dan Goose
01:02:56in the marketplace dance.
01:02:57My job is to fight
01:02:58and win and look good.
01:02:59Thank you very much.
01:03:01We'll be...
01:03:01Hey, Larry, man.
01:03:0220 years ago,
01:03:03he was my father
01:03:04and now in 2020
01:03:05he's still with us.
01:03:06He's still with the Camacho.
01:03:07What's the secret, Larry?
01:03:08Not the secret, Larry.
01:03:10The secret to keeping young
01:03:11is starting from the Camachos, eh?
01:03:13Just keep smiling
01:03:14and watching the Camachos.
01:03:15God bless you.
01:03:16Just one thing, guys,
01:03:19from ringside.
01:03:20Joe Hutchinson said to me
01:03:22afterwards
01:03:23that he's a very good boxer,
01:03:25Hector Camacho Jr.,
01:03:26but he's been hit harder
01:03:27by featherweights.
01:03:28Jim?
01:03:30All right.
01:03:30Thanks very much, Larry.
01:03:31My secret to staying young
01:03:32would be keep punching
01:03:33and keep your left hand up.
01:03:35Still to come tonight,
01:03:37the main event,
01:03:38which matches Shane Mosley,
01:03:39Sugar Shane Mosley,
01:03:40the welterweight champion
01:03:41of the world,
01:03:42against Antonio Diaz,
01:03:44moving up from 140 pounds
01:03:45and putting his 25-fight win streak
01:03:48on the line
01:03:48as he leaps
01:03:49at the opportunity
01:03:51to fight Mosley,
01:03:52newly anointed
01:03:53off his victory
01:03:54over De La Hoya
01:03:55as one of the true superstars
01:03:57of the sport.
01:03:59Meanwhile,
01:04:00another superstar
01:04:01of the sport
01:04:01will be in action
01:04:02next Saturday night
01:04:03when Lennox Lewis
01:04:04puts his heavyweight championship
01:04:06of the world
01:04:07on the line
01:04:07against David Tua.
01:04:09Tua getting
01:04:10a long-awaited chance
01:04:11to fight for the title.
01:04:13This could be
01:04:14a high-action war
01:04:15in Vegas.
01:04:19Lennox Lewis.
01:04:22Another first-round knockout.
01:04:24Lennox in trouble.
01:04:26Down goes Morrison again.
01:04:29David Tua.
01:04:32Tua going to work.
01:04:34Tua raining punches on Bell
01:04:36and the referee stops
01:04:37the punch.
01:04:38Hard left hand by Tua.
01:04:42On Saturday,
01:04:43November 11,
01:04:44Lennox Lewis,
01:04:45heavyweight champion
01:04:45of the world
01:04:46and David Tua,
01:04:48number one-ranked challenger,
01:04:49will battle
01:04:50for heavyweight supremacy.
01:04:55Lewis,
01:04:56the two-time champion,
01:04:57is the most feared
01:04:58heavyweight in the sport today.
01:05:00Throughout his reign,
01:05:01he has accepted
01:05:02each challenge
01:05:03that came his way,
01:05:04disposing of every challenger
01:05:06that crossed his path.
01:05:07That was a very brave effort.
01:05:09Among the many fights
01:05:11that defined Lewis' career,
01:05:13his two 1999 battles
01:05:14with Evander Holyfield,
01:05:16a second-round knockout
01:05:17of rising star Michael Grant,
01:05:19and most recently,
01:05:20an impressive destruction
01:05:21of Franz Bota.
01:05:23Three-punch combination,
01:05:25and Franz Bota,
01:05:26who has a pretty good chin,
01:05:29went through the rope.
01:05:30This is David Tua's first shot
01:05:32at a world title.
01:05:33He arrived on the scene
01:05:34in 1996
01:05:35with a 19-second knockout
01:05:37of John Ruiz.
01:05:39Since then,
01:05:39Tua's done nothing
01:05:40but steamroll his opponents.
01:05:43Apart from a slugfest loss
01:05:45to Ike Ibe Abuchi,
01:05:47but that brilliant fight
01:05:48only enhanced Tua's reputation
01:05:50as one of the toughest men
01:05:51in the heavyweight division.
01:05:53Tua tries to finish.
01:05:55Isandre Tate won't go down.
01:05:57Now he does.
01:05:58What determination.
01:06:00He was not gonna leave
01:06:01without a knockout.
01:06:03Now the 5-foot,
01:06:0410-inch challenger
01:06:04from Western Samoa
01:06:05has earned the right
01:06:07to try to dethrone
01:06:08the towering champion
01:06:09from London, England.
01:06:11He's the man
01:06:12that stands in front of me
01:06:13stopping David Tua
01:06:15from fulfilling his destiny.
01:06:16And when that left hook
01:06:18finds home,
01:06:19I sense fear,
01:06:21I taste blood,
01:06:23and I taste victory.
01:06:24Even when he's trying
01:06:25to hit me with a left hook,
01:06:26he's gonna be eating my jabs.
01:06:27If he gets past my jab,
01:06:28I'm gonna be throwing
01:06:29my right hand.
01:06:30If he gets past the right hand,
01:06:31he's gonna be running
01:06:32into some uppercuts.
01:06:33Lennox Lewis and David Tua
01:06:35promise to provide
01:06:36real fireworks
01:06:37when they fight
01:06:38for the heavyweight championship
01:06:39of the world
01:06:40next Saturday night.
01:06:41Live on TVKO Pay-Per-View
01:06:43from HBO.
01:06:45And, of course,
01:06:47in preparation
01:06:48for their meeting
01:06:49next Saturday night,
01:06:50both Lewis and Tua
01:06:51are in Las Vegas
01:06:53where they join us now
01:06:54live from separate locations
01:06:56there in Vegas
01:06:57for a chance
01:06:57to look ahead
01:06:58toward the big fight.
01:07:00Gentlemen,
01:07:00thank you both very much
01:07:01for being with us.
01:07:03Lennox,
01:07:03it's been one year
01:07:04since you solidified
01:07:06your hold
01:07:06on the heavyweight championship.
01:07:08You fought the consensus
01:07:09number one contender
01:07:10in Michael Grant.
01:07:12Then you took on
01:07:13Franz Bota
01:07:13who had been tough
01:07:14against some other guys.
01:07:15Now you take on Tua
01:07:17for the second time
01:07:18in three defenses.
01:07:19You're fighting the guy
01:07:19that everybody sees
01:07:21as the consensus
01:07:22number one contender.
01:07:24Is David,
01:07:24in your view,
01:07:25the toughest challenger
01:07:26you've faced
01:07:27since winning the title?
01:07:29Well, absolutely.
01:07:30You know,
01:07:30if anybody deserves a chance
01:07:32it's David Tua.
01:07:33I think he's stepping up
01:07:34a class.
01:07:35Obviously,
01:07:36he's boxing
01:07:37against a six-foot-five guy.
01:07:38I don't see him
01:07:39ever boxing
01:07:40against a big guy
01:07:41and he's going
01:07:42to run into
01:07:42a lot of problems.
01:07:44David,
01:07:45can you hear me?
01:07:46Yes,
01:07:46I can hear you, Jim.
01:07:47Okay, David.
01:07:48You've waited
01:07:49a long time
01:07:50for this opportunity.
01:07:51Lennox acknowledges that
01:07:52when he says
01:07:53there's nobody
01:07:53more qualified
01:07:54to fight him
01:07:54for the title
01:07:55than you,
01:07:56David Tua.
01:07:56You probably
01:07:57were qualified
01:07:58to get this shot
01:07:59three years ago.
01:08:00How difficult,
01:08:01how frustrating
01:08:02has it been for you
01:08:03to have to wait
01:08:04so long
01:08:05for the title shot?
01:08:06It's been very frustrating
01:08:07for David Tua
01:08:08to be waiting
01:08:10so long
01:08:10for a crack
01:08:12at the title
01:08:12but I tell you what,
01:08:14there's no more frustration
01:08:15now because
01:08:16next Saturday,
01:08:18you know,
01:08:18everything I work
01:08:19very, very hard for
01:08:19as a professional fighter
01:08:21will come down
01:08:22this Saturday night.
01:08:23In some of your
01:08:24great performances
01:08:25that we showed
01:08:25on videotape there,
01:08:26you weighed
01:08:27under 230 pounds.
01:08:29In the last couple
01:08:30of years,
01:08:30you've gone way up
01:08:31in weight
01:08:31for one fight
01:08:32you recently entered
01:08:33at 253.
01:08:34Is that a mark
01:08:35that you lost focus
01:08:37while waiting
01:08:37for this chance
01:08:38or did you want
01:08:39to get bigger
01:08:39to prepare yourself
01:08:41to fight Lewis?
01:08:42Well,
01:08:42everything happens
01:08:43for a reason,
01:08:44you know,
01:08:45I got bigger
01:08:46because my body
01:08:47matured
01:08:48and that's the reason
01:08:49why I came in
01:08:50heavier at times
01:08:51but,
01:08:51you know,
01:08:52really it's got
01:08:52nothing to do
01:08:53with me not being
01:08:54focused
01:08:54because I tell you
01:08:55what,
01:08:55at the end of the day,
01:08:56I'm not a lightweight,
01:08:57I'm a heavyweight.
01:08:59Lennox,
01:08:59there's a school
01:09:00of thought
01:09:00among some experts,
01:09:02George Foreman
01:09:02is one of them,
01:09:03that your big punching
01:09:05is more effective
01:09:06against guys
01:09:06your own height
01:09:07than against a shorter guy
01:09:09that you won't have
01:09:09the same leverage
01:09:10trying to do
01:09:12to David Tua
01:09:12what you did
01:09:13to Michael Grant.
01:09:14Any validity to that?
01:09:17No,
01:09:17not really.
01:09:18I mean,
01:09:18you know,
01:09:19I've got an arsenal
01:09:19filled with punches
01:09:20and one of the punches
01:09:22in my arsenal
01:09:22is a great two uppercuts
01:09:24with my left
01:09:24and my right
01:09:25so even if he's bending down
01:09:27he's going to be bending
01:09:27into my uppercuts.
01:09:29So what's your tactical formula
01:09:30for winning the fight,
01:09:31Lennox?
01:09:31Is this a boxing match
01:09:32or a war?
01:09:34It's a boxing match
01:09:35plus I'm going to give him
01:09:35a haircut
01:09:36at the same time.
01:09:39Well,
01:09:39we can see why
01:09:40the haircut
01:09:40might be in order.
01:09:43David,
01:09:43everybody expects you
01:09:45to try to get inside
01:09:47and pound Lennox
01:09:48to the body.
01:09:48Is that the goal?
01:09:50Yeah,
01:09:50well,
01:09:51the thing is,
01:09:51you know,
01:09:51everybody's making
01:09:53a big deal
01:09:54because Lennox
01:09:55is a bigger,
01:09:56taller opponent
01:09:57with longer reach
01:09:58but I tell you what,
01:09:58it's like dating
01:09:59a taller girl.
01:10:01You know,
01:10:01when you go to bed
01:10:02you're the same size.
01:10:03All right,
01:10:04thank you both
01:10:05very much for your time.
01:10:06We'll look forward
01:10:07to seeing you out there
01:10:07in Vegas.
01:10:08Lennox Lewis
01:10:09defending the World
01:10:10Heavyweight Championship
01:10:11against the very
01:10:12deserving David Tua.
01:10:14Next Saturday night
01:10:15we remind you
01:10:16it'll be live
01:10:17on pay-per-view
01:10:18from HBO TVKO
