00:00Beatable. HBO Sports.
00:07And now, the HBO Sports presentation. HBO Boxing After Dark.
00:30The following is a special presentation of HBO Sports, a network of champions.
01:00HBO Sports.
01:30The following is a special presentation of HBO Sports.
02:00The hostility, the primary emblem of an unusual social irony.
02:04There's Reyes Munoz, a journeyman for whom being on Boxing After Dark is like winning the lottery.
02:09But he has to face Arturo Gatti, regarded as one of the most entertaining in the sport.
02:13There's Stevie Johnson defending his lightweight title against the flamboyant and fan-followed Angel Manfredi.
02:21It's a doubleheader tonight on HBO's Boxing After Dark.
02:25Hello again, everybody. I'm Jim Lampley.
02:27We welcome you back to this important edition of Boxing After Dark.
02:30Important because the lightweight title fight between Stevie Johnson and Angel Manfredi
02:35matches two of the best and better-known fighters below the welterweight class.
02:40This time, they're fighting for Johnson's 135-pound title.
02:43Manfredi had a title and lost in a title fight at 130 pounds before moving up to this weight class.
02:50And before that, the ever-colorful Arturo Gatti, regarded by many as the most singularly exciting fighter in the sport
02:56because of his life and or death struggle style, comes back to the ring after a long layoff
03:02and following a three-fight losing streak to try to get it going again against an unknown journeyman named Reyes Munoz.
03:09Here to talk about it with us is HBO's Boxing After Dark expert analyst, world light heavyweight champion Roy Jones.
03:17And Roy, Arturo Gatti has a three-fight losing streak.
03:22And here he is for another HBO paycheck on Boxing After Dark.
03:25Do the other fighters in Gatti's weight neighborhood have jealousy because of the opportunities he gets
03:30or do they recognize that because of his unusually entertaining style, he's always going to get the business benefit of the doubt?
03:36Well, I think the guys kind of understand that Arturo Gatti is in a business to where you're paid when people want to see you.
03:42It's extraordinarily, outlandishly, just wild, miraculous comebacks and stuff like that.
03:48Just make it to where if he comes on, you've got to watch it.
03:51You never know what might happen.
03:52So people are in love with this.
03:54This is what people think of when they think of boxing, when they think of prize fighting.
03:58He is like, I mean, the total graphic for a great comeback prize fighter, the Rocky-type guy.
04:05Yep, compelling because he hits and gets hit.
04:07That's right.
04:08So people love that.
04:09People are going to want to see that.
04:11No matter who you are, if you're not entertaining in some sense, people are not going to want to see you as much.
04:15Arturo Gatti is guaranteed to entertain.
04:18But with an eye toward the fact that another loss would be significant damage above and beyond what he's already suffered,
04:24Gatti's handlers have him in against a guy they think he can beat, a journeyman named Reyes Munoz.
04:29And here, of course, HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant.
04:32Larry in the losing streak and the fights preceding the losing streak that gave Gatti his image as this dramatically exciting fighter.
04:40The take was that he would burst upon the scene and probably, because of his style, flame out rapidly.
04:46And a lot of people say that's exactly what he did.
04:49Can he now rise from the ashes?
04:51I think probably he can, you know, to a degree.
04:54How high he can rise before he takes another melodramatic fall, that's something we're going to have to see.
05:0113,000 feet is how high he rose recently before he fell out of an airplane.
05:0713,000 feet, skydiving.
05:09Other than that, he's used this year very wisely to help restore his body and soul after those three brutal fights last year.
05:20So now we're going to see what happens next.
05:24He has his parachute did open, which is the good news, and he's still only 27 years old.
05:30And many of the great warriors of the past, like Lomada, Basilio, whose style he was compared to, they had some of their most memorable fights well into their 30s.
05:43The opponent picked tonight, you know, though, Jim, is there to help restore him, not to beat him.
05:49Reyes Munoz is a great human story because of the opportunity he gets to be here.
05:54You suspect it will be his one moment in the sun.
05:56Let's look at the tale of the tape between Arturo Gatti and Reyes Munoz.
06:00Gatti spent the last four weeks tearing himself down to 139 pounds, one pound below the weigh-in agreement of 140.
06:09And look at that.
06:10He has gained 21 pounds, no doubt most all of it fluid, since the weigh-in more than 24 hours ago.
06:18Gatti with a two-inch height advantage.
06:20They are equal in reach.
06:21Munoz will be outweighed by 15 pounds in the ring tonight.
06:26Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
06:29The Arturo Gatti-Reyes Munoz fight is scheduled for 10 rounds, non-title, using the unified rule to the Association of Boxing Commissioners.
06:38There is no standing eight count.
06:39The three knockdown rule, only the referee can stop the fight, and you cannot be saved by the bell at any rounds, including the 10th and final rounds.
06:47Jim.
06:48All right, Harold, and now here comes Reyes Munoz, who works in a concrete bean foundry in Erie, Pennsylvania.
06:58Born in Ponce de Puerto Rico, raised in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, won a Golden Glove title in New Jersey, and won steward.
07:04American amateur team overseas, but as a professional, he has been almost totally anonymous and has had full-time jobs outside of boxing throughout his boxing career.
07:15In fact, I don't know if we've ever had a fighter who has leaped farther from his largest previous paycheck to the amount of money that he's getting tonight than is the case for Reyes Munoz,
07:27who was plucked from obscurity to be the chosen opponent for Arturo Gatti's comeback to the ring after an eight-month layoff.
07:35A closer look, Larry.
07:36Nunoz gets 12 bucks an hour in a cement factory in Erie, Pennsylvania, doesn't own a car.
07:45His top previous purse, $800 tonight, $35,000.
07:50He's going to use it to buy a car and hopefully to get custody of a daughter who lives with her grandmother.
07:58Jim, putting on 21 pounds of fluid in the last 36 hours really brings into question what kind of conditioning Gatti did for this fight
08:18and whether he's going to be sluggish or not.
08:21You know he may not be able to reveal that in him, but that's outrageous to put on so much weight in such a short period of time.
08:32Gatti and his hand loose said, of course, that it was the best training camp he's had in recent years.
08:36They contended that he has seldom been in better shape, but as Larry points out,
08:43you have to raise eyebrows at the 21 pounds gained since yesterday.
08:47A closer look at Arturo Gatti.
08:51Arturo is a multilingual, but the language he speaks best is boxing.
08:56He did own a title at one time, but he hasn't won in two years.
09:02A period of time that encompasses his three-fight losing streak in 1998.
09:08All three of those fights, unforgettable ring combat.
09:11First, January of 1998, the eighth round TKO lost to Angel Manfredi.
09:17Manfredi cut Gatti's eye badly in the first round, knocked him down,
09:21and then weathered the storm in the late rounds to get the TKO.
09:24Then Ivan Robinson won a split decision from Gatti in August in the early nominee for Fight of the Year.
09:30That one was matched by the late nominee for Fight of the Year,
09:33an equally scintillating battle in December,
09:35in which Robinson won a unanimous but extremely close decision.
09:40Some ringside observers thought maybe Gatti had stolen that fight.
09:44Now let's go up to ring announcer Mark Barrow for the official introductions.
09:48Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,

11:29Steve Weisfeld.
11:31Your referee for this event,
11:33from Patterson, New Jersey,
11:36Eddie Cotton.
11:40Introducing now the principals first in the blue corner to my right,
11:44wearing the black trunks,
11:46weighing 140 pounds,
11:49his professional record reads,
11:5121 victories,
11:52three defeats,
11:54nine wins coming by way of knockout.
11:56He is the pride of Ponce Puerto Rico,
11:59now boxing out of Erie, Pennsylvania.
12:03Here is Leyes Munoz.
12:07Munoz.
12:10His opponent,
12:12in the red corner,
12:14wearing the white trunks,
12:16with the blue trim.
12:18He weighs 139 pounds,
12:21his professional record,
12:2329 victories,
12:24four defeats,
12:26and 24 wins coming by way of knockout.
12:30He hails,
12:31from Jersey City, New Jersey,
12:34introducing,
12:36Arturo Gatti.
12:41Gatti,
12:4310 rounds,
12:44junior welterweights.
12:50Foxes,
12:51you both received your instructions in the dressing room,
12:54obey my commands,
12:55protect yourself at all times,
12:57let's touch gloves,
12:58expect a good,
12:58clean fight,
12:59go.
12:59Excuse me,
13:00watch his head.
13:01Okay,
13:01all right,
13:02I'll tell him.
13:03You know,
13:03the real questions about Gatti's comeback,
13:06Jim and Roy are going to be,
13:08whether he can learn to control some of his aggression,
13:12especially as he moves into the higher weight classes.
13:15Those who have watched him in the gym assure us that Arturo Gatti is a skillful boxer who,
13:24when he disciplines himself to do so,
13:26can avoid punches and move with sophistication around the ring.
13:31But he himself acknowledges all too often he gets hit,
13:35his eyes swell,
13:36he feels a sense of desperation,
13:38he goes to war.
13:39It's the pattern of all his fights.
13:48Fearsome body punting,
13:50a Gatti trademark.
13:51He begins to try to get to Munoz's rib cage early.
13:54Gatti's co-trainer,
13:58Ronnie Shields,
13:58was worried because he says Munoz likes to come forward and lead with his head.
14:03If he butts Arturo,
14:04Arturo's definitely going to cut.
14:14For his part,
14:15Reyes Munoz said to us,
14:17I know I'm unknown,
14:18but I should beat Gatti.
14:20He's been through too many wars.
14:28He hasn't lost a year.
14:29There's much of power in those wars, though.
14:32Now he looks strong.
14:34And, you know,
14:35and who wouldn't at 160 fighting a 145-pound fighter?
14:38All right.
14:39We're talking to a guy we remember as a junior lightweight
14:41who tonight is fighting at the middleweight limit here.
14:50Munoz wore glasses to the fighter meeting with us yesterday,
14:54raising some eyebrows.
14:55He said,
14:55No, no,
14:56I can see this is just for farsightedness,
14:59but he does appear to squint and blink as he moves around the ring.
15:03Yeah,
15:03I think that jab has made us quit and blink.
15:06The jab from Arturo got it.
15:08Munoz's left eyelid seems to be drooping downward a little bit.
15:25I think Munoz's best punch is going to turn out to be his jab.
15:29And already Arturo Gatti's left eye
15:31seems to show some swelling under the eye.
15:34Gatti swells around the left eye when you look at him.
15:36Well, when he walks out of the dressing room.
15:49Bloody nose for Munoz.
15:52Got to show some good patience with his jab tonight.
16:10Gatti moving and boxing as round one comes to a close.
16:13Down goes Reyes Munoz.
16:15On a left hook.
16:17Gatti blinking his left eye as he went to the neutral corner,
16:20but you can see Munoz bleeding from the nose,
16:23swelling from the left eye,
16:24wobbling around the ring,
16:26and Eddie Cotton calls it.
16:28That's the end of that.
16:30A first-round knockout in his return to the ring
16:33for Arturo Gatti.
16:36Good matchmaking.
16:37Excellent.
16:47Well, we said that this was part of his restoration program.
16:55Solid left hook.
16:56Good stoppage by referee Eddie Cotton
16:58as Reyes Munoz was on Queer Street.
17:01Yeah, I think the overhead right landed first, Jim.
17:04Then the left hook came behind it.
17:05All right.
17:05We'll take a look.
17:07I thought they could have waited.
17:08They could have had the bell ring.
17:11I don't know why it didn't ring,
17:13because the round went past the three-minute mark, I believe.
17:17Arturo Gatti threw 59 jabs
17:19among his 77 punches in round number one.
17:22So, as you pointed out, Roy Jones,
17:23he was working behind the jab throughout the round.
17:28Here's the knockout.
17:29Yep, overhead right.
17:34Yep, you're right, Roy.
17:36Followed by a left hook.
17:37Both punches significant, I think.
17:54The overhead right landing on the top of the skull,
17:57the left landing on the right temple,
17:59and those are two places
18:01where you can damage your opponent.
18:03You're right, and some people wonder
18:04how does a punch like that do so much damage,
18:07but realize that this is where
18:09that extra 15 pounds comes into play.
18:11This guy's 145 taking a punch from a 160-pounder.
18:15That's why it's good for Gatti sometimes
18:17to be able to beef up like that.
18:19I used to do that at the 160-pound limit.
18:21So, Reyes-Munoz gets his biggest paycheck ever,
18:25$35,000 for the one-round appearance against Gatti.
18:30They're bringing paramedics to the ring
18:31because the Connecticut State Athletic Commission's
18:35medical people are a little bit concerned.
18:37And now let's go to ring announcer Mark Barrow
18:51for the official particulars on this one.
18:52Ladies and gentlemen, the official time,
18:57three minutes, nine seconds,
19:00no saving by the bell in the first round,
19:04the winner by tactical knockout,
19:07Arturo Gatti.
19:12Gatti.
19:12And now Reyes-Munoz has been brought back
19:24to a supine position
19:26and is apparently going to be packed
19:31for removal from the ring.
19:35Connecticut officials taking absolutely no chances
19:38whatsoever with Munoz
19:39after he wobbled so precariously around the ring.
19:42following the knockout.
19:46Come on, HBO.
19:47Final punch stat numbers.
19:50And you'll see that Gatti landed 29 of 77 punches,
19:53as I mentioned.
19:5459 of them were jabs.
19:56Reyes-Munoz did not get off.
20:06And now let's go to Larry Merchant
20:07standing by with Arturo Gatti.
20:09All right.
20:10Arturo, something that doesn't look like
20:12he doesn't look good right here.
20:13Munoz is out on a stretcher.
20:16It looks as if he is being given some oxygen.
20:19The doctors have reported to us
20:20that he doesn't look good.
20:24Do you want to take a look at him,
20:25or what are your thoughts?
20:28Well, I just hope he's all right,
20:31and, you know, I'm sorry.
20:32I'm sorry, if anything.
20:34I don't know what to say.
20:35Did you feel that you had really hit him hard?
20:39It didn't look that there was some great Gatti punch in there
20:43that would do this kind of damage.
20:45I don't know.
20:46I didn't think I landed that hard, you know,
20:49but I think it was on the head,
20:50so probably that's why he's hurt.
20:53But we're probably just doing that for in case anything,
20:56you know, just for precaution.
20:58All right.
20:58So you're hoping that this is precautionary?
21:02Yeah, just for safety.
21:03I mean, you know, I just hope I came here to win a fight tonight,
21:07nothing like this.
21:09Have you ever been involved in a fight like this
21:12when an opponent was stretched out after this?
21:15No.
21:18All right.
21:19Let's talk about your return to the ring
21:21after you've been away all year long.
21:25How did it feel just being back on stage?
21:28It felt good to be back on stage,
21:29and, you know, I just hope that everything is all right
21:32because, you know, my night is not the same now
21:34if he's going to the hospital and he's not feeling right.
21:37But I'm happy to be back in the ring.
21:40And you're concerned that this would have,
21:42would make it an unhappy occasion.
21:45Yeah, because this is not the way that I like to win a fight.
21:48I hope he's all right, you know.
21:50That's all my concern right now.
21:51I don't care if I want it or not.
21:53It's for my rest to be all right.
21:57Everybody appreciates those thoughts for you.
22:00You came in having put on 21 pounds in the last 36 hours,
22:07which suggests that you did an awful lot of drying out
22:11to make 139 pounds.
22:13Were you surprised yourself?
22:16No.
22:16It's been like this for the last three years,
22:18and I gain a lot of weight after a win.
22:21If I weigh a day before, my body's just like that.
22:24I just gain a lot of weight.
22:25But when I ran into you this afternoon,
22:28you were saying you hoped you wouldn't weigh much more than 150
22:32because you might feel sluggish.
22:34Did you feel sluggish?
22:35I didn't feel sluggish.
22:36But first round, I was kind of slow.
22:38I felt kind of slow, slower than I usually would be.
22:40But, you know, everything went all right.
22:43And I just hope Ray's all right, you know, right now.
22:45Let's take a look at the future then.
22:47Are you going to fight a serious opponent this year,
22:53or are you looking to fight another easy opponent?
22:56Here are some of the big money opponents that have been raised for you.
23:02Duran, Costasu, should he win the junior welterweight title next week?
23:08And even a rematch with Manfredi if he were to win the title tonight.
23:14What are your thoughts about those opponents?
23:15Well, Manfredi, I deserve a rematch with Manfredi, that's of course.
23:20135, I would make 135 if I would get a world title shot with Manfredi.
23:24And Costasu or Chavez, I would love to do it.
23:27My next one could be them if that's possible.
23:31If the title's on the line, you know, it's all right.
23:34But if it's not on the line, I'd rather have another tune-up fight.
23:36Other fighters that have been named the winner of the Israel Cordona,
23:41Paul Spatter for a fight to replace Shane Mosley as one of the titleists.
23:49Do you have any thoughts about those two fighters?
23:52Right now, I know I came here tonight to win the fight.
23:55I'm going to go back in training, and hopefully my promoters and my magic
23:58are going to have something scheduled for me for soon.
24:00All right, I just want to ask you about one other fighter, a Canadian named Billy Irvin.
24:05Yeah.
24:05A lot of people think he's a tough guy like you.
24:08That would be a hot fight in Canada.
24:10Is that something that's on the table as far as you know?
24:13Well, Billy Irvin is a tough fighter, but there's only one tough fighter from Canada.
24:16It's our total guy, and I live in the States right now.
24:19Well, you are a tough fighter, and we were happy to see you back,
24:22but not happy under the circumstances of how the fight ended.
24:26No, no, Larry.
24:27I came here to win the fight, and I just hope that the rest of me is all right,
24:29and I'm going to make sure he's all right.
24:31Thank you very much, Arturo.
24:34Back to you, Jim.
24:35All right, thank you very much, Larry.
24:37Roy, you pointed out that the punching power difference
24:41when one guy comes in weighing 160 and the other one weighs only 145 is dramatic.
24:46Now, there were 36 hours between yesterday's weigh-in
24:50and when these guys entered the ring tonight, and obviously the longer the period of time
24:53between the weigh-in and when the fight begins,
24:56the greater you have a chance for this kind of mismatch.
24:58That's something that state commissions have to keep an eye on.
25:01Well, it's going to be hard for state commissions because, in this case,
25:04you have to look at it two ways.
25:05In a sense, Arturo Gatti is also giving himself another advantage.
25:09Now, he's taking a risk in giving himself that advantage,
25:12but that's part of it being an advantage.
25:14There's also a big risk.
25:15It's just like anything else in life.
25:17I mean, you take chances on stocks that can make you quick money,
25:21where you take a bigger risk.
25:22They can lose big money quick, too.
25:23So that's something that I don't think the commissions are going to be able to control.
25:27If a guy comes in, I mean, he could have did that if he weighed in this morning.
25:32Well, we will stay abreast of what's happening with Reyes Munoz.
25:36The doctors were concerned about the possibility of neurological damage.
25:39They didn't like the way his pupils looked,
25:41and consequently they decided to take every possible precaution.
25:44If we get an update, we'll pass it along to you.
25:48Meanwhile, as you know, we've got another main event coming up tonight,
25:51the lightweight championship bout with Stevie Johnston defending his title against Angel Manfredi.
25:55First, let's look ahead to one of the biggest boxing events of this or any other year.
26:01Coming up one month from now at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas,
26:06the pay-per-view battle between Oscar De La Hoya and Felix Trinidad.
26:10We've waited a long time for this.
26:12On September 18, Oscar De La Hoya and Felix Trinidad face off
26:20in a battle of undefeated welterweight champions,
26:23which has captured the public imagination like few fights in recent memory.
26:26De La Hoya is right there.
26:28It's Leonard Hearns all over.
26:31And Malcolm stops this fight.
26:33De La Hoya rides a wave of confidence into this fight.
26:36Late round fireworks at the expense of Ike Porte and Oba Carr fortified uneven performances
26:41while adding to Oscar's big fight mystique.
26:45And a solid training camp in Big Bear, California,
26:48reportedly has the golden boy in the best shape of his life.
26:51For this fight here with Felix Trinidad, I've done more than training.
26:55I've prepared myself physically like no other fight.
27:00And that will give me the confidence to fight every single round the same way.
27:06Titus Trinidad's problem, that's his chin, that crystal chin.
27:11The soon Oscar De La Hoya hits him, not harder, medium,
27:16that fight is going to be over.
27:18Now, Felix Trinidad will not take my punch.
27:22He's been hit by other fighters, but he's never been hit by me.
27:26And it's a whole different punch.
27:27It's a whole different feeling.
27:30And it's got a strike right hand.
27:34For Felix Trinidad, the moment is now.
27:37Dominating victories over Pennell Whitaker and Hugo Pineda in 1999
27:40have continued a career-long trend of one-sided wins with a long-time title holder.
27:45For Trinidad, training in his native Puerto Rico,
27:49September 18 is what he's been waiting for all his life.
27:53I'm looking forward to my fight with De La Hoya.
27:56I was born with a special talent that God gave me.
28:00I'm a natural fighter, and I've learned to be both offensive and defensive.
28:04I'm not intimidated by De La Hoya.
28:06This fight will end in a knockout, and I will be champion.
28:09This fight is the most important fight of his career, but not his most difficult opponent.
28:19De La Hoya is a great fighter.
28:20He has great ability, and we respect all fighters.
28:24But Tito's ability is greater.
28:26His preparations are going well, and time will tell.
28:29We have two champions who are undefeated, who both have instant knockout power,
28:34who are clearly the best fighters in their division,
28:37who are clearly two of the best five fighters in boxing,
28:40fighting in their primes at their best weights.
28:43That happens about once every 10, 15 years.
28:45It happens next, September 18,
28:48and it promises for fight fans unforgettable fireworks.
28:51Back live at ringside with a man regarded by many as the number one fighter in the world,
28:57Roy Jones.
28:57You talk to a lot of fighters, your buddies, those who look up to you.
29:01What's the buzz among fighters about De La Hoya Trinidad?
29:04Well, a lot of people think that, a lot of fighters think that Trinidad has an advantage,
29:08being that he's showed a big heart,
29:10that he's not afraid to come back from adversity,
29:13that he's been down a few times,
29:14but he gets up like the old Larry Holmes did,
29:17and he's much more held when he gets up than he was before he ever went down.
29:20So people think that he's going to go in and kind of give Oscar
29:24what they've been looking for Oscar to get.
29:26But a lot of these people are also Oscar critics
29:28because Oscar gets so much publicity in the sport of boxing,
29:31and they fail to realize that Oscar is a much better fighter
29:34than they are giving him credit for.
29:36Felix Trinidad has been down much more times than Oscar De La Hoya has.
29:41Felix Trinidad's chin is not quite as Oscar De La Hoya's chin.
29:44Oscar is a bigger puncher than most of the guys that Felix Trinidad has fought.
29:47So I personally think that both fighters have weaknesses,
29:51both fighters have strengths.
29:53Whoever comes out and capitalizes on the other's weaknesses first will win the fight.
29:57The fight is a toss-up right now.
29:59Nobody truthfully has a big advantage.
30:02Can't ask for more than that.
30:03That'll come up on TVKO Pay-Per-View September 18
30:07from the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
30:11That night it'll be live, Oscar De La Hoya against Felix Trinidad.
30:15That's a big advantage.
