00:00:00The WBC Welterweight Championship. Let's go to ringside, where Steve Albert, Ferdi Pacheco, and Bobby Chez are standing by to call our main event. Steve.
00:00:08Thank you, Jim. And finally, we are just minutes away from the fight.
00:00:13Hurdell Sweet Pea Whitaker versus Julio Cesar Chavez for the WBC Welterweight Championship.
00:00:19Outwardly, at least, Whitaker exerting a composed, cool demeanor.
00:00:23But who knows what's really going on in his mind at this moment.
00:00:25He is well aware of the notion that many fighters, top-notch fighters, are never quite the same after getting in the ring with Chavez.
00:00:33That could probably be said of Meldrick Taylor, Edwin Rosario, Roger Mayweather, and Juan Laporte, just to name a few.
00:00:39It'll be interesting to see if Whitaker is loose at the outset, playing to the crowd as he said he would do.
00:00:44Showboating while trying to frustrate the challenger.
00:00:47But Chavez counters by saying Whitaker can't play with Julio.
00:00:51He will force the dancing southpaw to fight, period.
00:00:55Well, the war of words is just about over.
00:00:58It's almost time to settle matters where it counts.
00:01:01In the ring, as Pernell Whitaker meets Julio Cesar Chavez for the mythical title of greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
00:01:09And as with any big championship out, the pre-fight hype can be almost overwhelming.
00:01:14Ferdy, can this fight live up to the hype?
00:01:16I think it can.
00:01:17It's the two best in the world trying to figure out who's better.
00:01:21Unless Whitaker just does a complete ballet turn and it becomes a Milrose Games, it's going to exceed the hype.
00:01:29Hype is only this good until that bell sounds.
00:01:31And as we've just seen in boxing where so many surprising things happen, we've got drama coming out here because we've got some judges that have some problems presenting and it altered the kind of fight.
00:01:44So what we're going to see is going to exceed the hype.
00:01:47Well, in light of their contrasting styles, does this matchup remind you of any past boxing classic?
00:01:53Yeah, you'd have to go mainly to Duran, Sugar Ray, Leonard.
00:01:57If Sugar Ray Leonard abandoned his game plan and tried to fight with Duran, Duran ate him up.
00:02:01But when Sugar Ray decided he was going to box and be intelligent, then he caused Duran to quit.
00:02:06Now, obviously Chavez is no Duran, but the similarity exists.
00:02:11If Whitaker wants to maintain his poise and box, then it's going to be a frustrating night for Chavez.
00:02:18He's going to hope to have to catch him and possibly knock him out now that he himself is worried about a decision.
00:02:23Give us your prediction.
00:02:25Well, I think you can capsule it like this.
00:02:28Chavez should and Whitaker could.
00:02:31And the difference is who sticks to their game plan, who affects his style of fighting on the other.
00:02:36So you like Chavez?
00:02:37I do like Chavez to win at the end, possibly by a knockout, now that he's seen the way the judges are going.
00:02:44And his has got a Texas judge, a Swiss judge, and an English judge.
00:02:49All bad news for Chavez.
00:02:51Especially after that Azuma-Nelson fight.
00:02:53What about the effects of the hype on Whitaker and Chavez?
00:02:55Can it be distracting, Bobby?
00:02:57At this level of the game, with the multitude of championships between these two fighters, they're far too professional.
00:03:02The hype won't mean nothing.
00:03:03How about your read on the ring strategies?
00:03:06Well, Chavez has got to be Chavez-like, to coin a phrase.
00:03:09Come in and he systematically dismantles his opponents with a head and body attack like no other man can.
00:03:14He gets stronger as the rounds go on.
00:03:16And I think tonight he may need to start just a little quicker, apply that pressure early,
00:03:20so that Whitaker does not get any head of steam or a couple of rounds under his belt and a little too confident.
00:03:26With Whitaker, he has to use that southpaw style, that blazing hand and foot speed.
00:03:30But not only the combinations, tremendous counter-combinations if he's going to win a decision.
00:03:34Because I don't think he can knock Julio out.
00:03:36And yes, my prediction, Julio says that Chavez will win a unanimous decision or a late-round knockout if Whitaker decides to stand and fight with him.
00:03:43That's the way I see it.
00:03:44You read my mind.
00:03:45And how about another pre-fight prediction?
00:03:47Let's go over to Montel Williams.
00:03:49Thanks a lot, Steve.
00:03:50I'll tell you what.
00:03:51We're talking about pound-for-pound the best.
00:03:52Well, this crowd erupted when this pound-for-pound man's name was announced.
00:03:56Magic Johnson.
00:03:57Magic, we need to know, what do you think?
00:03:59Who do you like in this fight?
00:04:00Oh, man.
00:04:01Montel, you're putting me on the spot.
00:04:03I like both guys because Brunel is such a speed person who moved around a lot,
00:04:10who will probably give Chavez problems because of that.
00:04:13But I love Chavez's heart because that guy, no matter what, he'll be around for 14, 15 rounds.
00:04:20Give me one or the other.
00:04:21Oh, man.
00:04:21Come on, Magic.
00:04:22I'm trying.
00:04:24Brunel, my boy, I can't.
00:04:27All right.
00:04:27Okay.
00:04:28I'll tell you what.
00:04:28We got to go back to this thing.
00:04:29A lot of people feel the same way.
00:04:31All right.
00:04:32Here we go.
00:04:32All right.
00:04:33Montel, the decibel level getting higher and higher here at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio.
00:04:38The time for our main event is rapidly approaching.
00:04:41In a moment, Whitaker and Chavez will leave their dressing rooms
00:04:45and they will walk into the annals of boxing history.
00:05:06I'm a mover and I like guys coming forward.
00:05:09You know, I feel like, you know, if I can, in my arsenal is to make a miss.
00:05:16You know, that's my style.
00:05:18It's hit and not be hit.
00:05:19And however it takes for me not to get hit, I'm going to do it.
00:05:22Whether it's bending all the way down to my knees and then you punch over my head.
00:05:26As long as you don't hit me, that's fine.
00:05:28I'm not going to have problems with the speedy southpaw, as most people think.
00:05:34I've been able to handle every other lefty in the past.
00:05:37My training is so specialized for this fight that people will be very surprised when I really hurt Whitaker.
00:05:42This fight coming up with Chavez, I'm not looking for any knockouts.
00:05:46I'm not looking for anything special.
00:05:48I'm just looking to dominate.
00:05:50And I'm not even looking to destroy him.
00:05:53I'm just going to humiliate him.
00:05:55And I know he knows that.
00:05:56I believe that I'm going to win the fight by a knockout.
00:06:04If it comes to a decision, I'll gladly take it because I know that I will win.
00:06:08But I really believe I will knock him out.
00:06:11This fight is going to be the most fun I've ever had.
00:06:15Because I'm going to be smiling.
00:06:16I'm always smiling, laughing, and kidding around.
00:06:19It's like a toss-up.
00:06:20You know, it's going to be a toss-up.
00:06:22But I'm going to be the one that amaze everybody.
00:06:24With Whitaker, he knows that all of his other opponents could not avoid him because that is his style.
00:06:32He just comes out a fighter.
00:06:34But Whitaker is going to learn a lesson.
00:06:36Because if he really believes he's going to manipulate me and control the fight, he's sadly mistaken.
00:06:50And here he is.
00:06:52It's Julio Cesar Chavez, who will enter this arena in the somewhat unusual role as the challenger, not defending a title.
00:06:59So odd to see him walking into the ring first, waiting for the champion to arrive.
00:07:04The last time this happened, May of 89, against Roger Mayweather.
00:07:07At 87-0, Chavez says his goals now are to win the runaway title and, of course, to remain undefeated.
00:07:14The last time this happened, May of 89, against Roger Mayweather.
00:07:23The last time this happened, May of 89, against Roger Mayweather.
00:07:27Oh
00:07:57Oh
00:08:27Oh
00:08:57Oh
00:09:27Oh
00:09:57Now that is an entrance
00:10:08Julio Cesar Chavez
00:10:12Quite cognizant of the fact that he carries the hopes of his adoring public
00:10:16That he represents all of Mexico when he steps in the ring
00:10:20But he says he's fighting for himself
00:10:22At times he does think of Mexico and his three kids
00:10:25The expectations and pressures have to be immense
00:10:28But he tries to relax and concentrate on the business at hand
00:10:32And here is the champion
00:10:38Listen to the crowd reaction
00:10:41Colonel Sweet Pea Whitaker out of Norfolk, Virginia
00:10:44Like his counterpart, five world titles and three different weight divisions
00:10:48Tonight his first defensive title he won back in March
00:10:51With the unanimous decision over James Buddy McGirt
00:10:54Whitaker no stranger to fighting on enemy turf
00:10:57Having to contend with the New Yorker McGirt at Madison Square Garden
00:11:00And tonight against the Mexican Chavez
00:11:02And his legion of followers here in Texas
00:11:04This could be the supreme challenge

00:19:00Sweetie Whittaker.
00:19:05Once again,
00:19:06referee in charge,
00:19:07Joe Cortez.
00:19:09All right, gentlemen,
00:19:10we win all the rules in the dressing room.
00:19:13I won a good clean fight.
00:19:15Obey my commands at all times.
00:19:17Take hands.
00:19:18Good luck to both of you.
00:19:19Good luck.
00:19:38So,
00:19:39as we begin this long-awaited showdown,
00:19:41the biggest vote of contention,
00:19:43the judges.
00:19:44Here we go.
00:19:46Round one,
00:19:46scheduled for 12.
00:19:48for Purnell Whittaker's
00:19:49WBC runaway championship.
00:19:55Julio Cesar Chavez
00:19:56and Purnell's Sweetie Whittaker.
00:19:59Chavez can't threaten to pull out
00:20:00unless all three judges
00:20:01were from neutral country.
00:20:04Then Whittaker's people said
00:20:05if there's any change in the judges,
00:20:06they'd go home.
00:20:07But then,
00:20:08Don King and Dan Duva,
00:20:09the promoters,
00:20:10agreed to work it out.
00:20:11But we still do have a judge from Texas,
00:20:13Jack Woodruff.
00:20:18I'll tell you what, Steve,
00:20:19I have bigger butterflies now
00:20:20than when I'm fighting.
00:20:21This is just,
00:20:22the anticipation is great.
00:20:23You can feel it in the air.
00:20:24You can see that Julio Cesar Chavez
00:20:27is going for blockbusters to begin with
00:20:30and he's not going for any of the jive
00:20:31because Whittaker
00:20:33has boxed beautiful left
00:20:34and now just feigning,
00:20:36throwing his little jab.
00:20:37But when he changes up
00:20:38and tries to change
00:20:38from one hand to the other,
00:20:40from left hand to right hand,
00:20:41Julio just put in two bombs.
00:20:44He's starting quicker
00:20:45than he normally does,
00:20:46which is something
00:20:46I thought he might want to do
00:20:48to eventually take the legs
00:20:49away from Whittaker.
00:20:49And he's looking for the body shots
00:20:51and he is looking for big shots.
00:20:54Whittaker going in
00:20:55with Chavez.
00:20:56By this point,
00:20:57the strategies are no big secret,
00:20:59but this fight could boil down
00:21:01to which fighter
00:21:02can impose his will on the other.
00:21:04If one fighter
00:21:04fights the other's fight,
00:21:06that could be a mistake.
00:21:08I don't think I've ever seen Chavez
00:21:09this wound up
00:21:10because he's abandoning
00:21:11what he's going to get him here,
00:21:12all body attack.
00:21:13He's going to the hand of the body.
00:21:15He's going to finish this fight.
00:21:17I've never seen him this wound up.
00:21:18And yet still the ultimate sportsman,
00:21:20an accidental low blow.
00:21:21They touch gloves.
00:21:23Still a lot of respect
00:21:24in that ring.
00:21:24And you're right.
00:21:24I've never seen him more emotional.
00:21:27I mean,
00:21:27he usually passes
00:21:28his first round
00:21:29just chasing the guy around
00:21:30and landing a few body shots.
00:21:32This guy is out to end this
00:21:34as soon as he can.
00:21:35Chavez is.
00:21:35He's more emotional
00:21:36here tonight
00:21:37before 63,000-plus
00:21:39in San Antonio
00:21:40than he was
00:21:41before over 130,000
00:21:43in Mexico City
00:21:43last February
00:21:44against Greg Haugen.
00:21:45It depends on your contrary,
00:21:47on your opponent.
00:21:48Yes, sir.
00:21:49And that opponent is
00:21:50Pernell Whitaker
00:21:52who's doing those
00:21:52deep knee squats now.
00:21:54He just can't get rid
00:21:56of that clowning.
00:21:57And it's a jive
00:21:58that works for him, though.
00:21:59It's worked for Whitaker,
00:22:00so you can't say
00:22:01criticize him for it.
00:22:04Chavez is concentrating
00:22:05on the body.
00:22:06And right now,
00:22:07Pernell's moving so quickly
00:22:08that there's times
00:22:08where he's actually
00:22:09got his right foot
00:22:10in front of him
00:22:10where he almost appears
00:22:11as if he's a southpaw.
00:22:12But he is fighting
00:22:13almost exclusively
00:22:15to the body right now.
00:22:16He's zeroing in on the body.
00:22:17He wants to kill those legs
00:22:18so that the body
00:22:19and the head
00:22:19will die later.
00:22:21Well, up to now,
00:22:22Pernell has not put
00:22:23anything in hard
00:22:24to keep Chavez off
00:22:25or made him think.
00:22:26So what we're having here
00:22:28is what we thought
00:22:29we were going to have
00:22:29a track meet up
00:22:30to right now.
00:22:33Whitaker hoping
00:22:33the awkward southpaw
00:22:35style that he presents
00:22:36will frustrate
00:22:37Julio Cesar Chavez
00:22:39and Poe's difficulty
00:22:39for him
00:22:40as we head for the bow
00:22:42in the opening round.
00:22:43Two, two, three, four,
00:22:45there you go.
00:23:15Take a look at that
00:23:18right hand that Chavez
00:23:19landed.
00:23:20This is the kind of stuff
00:23:22that's going to make
00:23:22Whitaker think a little bit,
00:23:23maybe speed up his pace
00:23:25a little bit
00:23:25because you don't take
00:23:26too many of those
00:23:26from Chavez.
00:23:27Yeah, he put most of his
00:23:28work on the body
00:23:29during the first round.
00:23:30He's going to eventually
00:23:30come up top
00:23:31and it's going to take
00:23:32a lot of energy
00:23:33and a lot of movement
00:23:33on Pernell Whitaker's court
00:23:34to keep him off.
00:23:35Well, Chavez said,
00:23:36he told me at lunch today
00:23:37we ate for one hour
00:23:38and he said,
00:23:39I'm not going to go
00:23:39to the body at all.
00:23:40I mean, I'm not going
00:23:41to go to the head at all.
00:23:42I'm just going to the body.
00:23:42But he looks,
00:23:44he just can't wait
00:23:44for that bell to ring.
00:23:45I've never seen a guy
00:23:46this up as Chavez
00:23:48is this time.
00:23:50Whitaker's got to put
00:23:51something on him
00:23:51to stop him from
00:23:52being this wide.
00:23:54Round two.
00:23:55Chavez, who generally
00:23:56starts out in deliberate
00:23:57fashion,
00:23:58has not waited as long
00:24:02to start unloading
00:24:03recently his last few
00:24:05fights.
00:24:07He snapped Whitaker's
00:24:08head back there
00:24:09as Joe Cortez
00:24:10breaks him up.
00:24:10And Joe Cortez
00:24:12is saying,
00:24:12stop the infighting
00:24:13when I'm trying
00:24:14to break you up
00:24:14because he is so anxious
00:24:16as Chavez
00:24:16that he keeps punching
00:24:17even though the referee
00:24:18is trying to break him up.
00:24:19He wants to put some
00:24:19hurt on this guy.
00:24:20He gives you the impression
00:24:21of some legitimate
00:24:22bad blood.
00:24:23Yeah, like you really
00:24:24want to put something
00:24:24on this guy.
00:24:25Let's get this over with.
00:24:27Whitaker able to
00:24:28scramble away.
00:24:31Sneaky right hand.
00:24:33Another one.
00:24:35Now Whitaker going
00:24:36to the body
00:24:37but also to the arms
00:24:38doing no damage
00:24:39to Chavez.
00:24:40There's a right hand
00:24:44to the top
00:24:45of the head
00:24:45of Whitaker.
00:24:46Whitaker doesn't seem
00:24:47to be punching
00:24:48that hard
00:24:49whereas Chavez
00:24:50looks like he's
00:24:51punching everything
00:24:51he's got.
00:24:52Pretty good right hand
00:24:52there by Chavez.
00:24:54But will Chavez
00:24:55in his haste
00:24:56make the ultimate
00:24:57mistake of maybe
00:24:58overthrowing each punch
00:24:59and getting himself
00:25:00a little tired later on.
00:25:01If he doesn't,
00:25:02Pee-wee's in for a long
00:25:03night but if he does,
00:25:04he himself could be
00:25:05frustrating later on.
00:25:06Nice shot.
00:25:06Nice shot.
00:25:07Maybe the first
00:25:10good clean shot
00:25:11that he's hit him
00:25:12with.
00:25:12Now the jaw
00:25:14by Cordell Whitaker
00:25:17trying to set up
00:25:18the left.
00:25:20Again, remember,
00:25:21we have judges
00:25:22from foreign countries.
00:25:24Oh, good action.
00:25:25As they trade punches
00:25:26and both body shots.
00:25:28Both trading body shots.
00:25:31But that could bode
00:25:32well more for Chavez.
00:25:33But Chavez just
00:25:34walked into a sturdy
00:25:36left by Whitaker.
00:25:37I'll tell you though,
00:25:38on the way in
00:25:38he caught Whitaker too.
00:25:39I think both of them
00:25:40a little outbound
00:25:40falling into each other.
00:25:41The aggressiveness
00:25:42is unbelievable
00:25:43at this early stage.
00:25:47And both guys
00:25:48are being warned
00:25:49about hitting on the
00:25:49break.
00:25:50They're fighting
00:25:51all the way through
00:25:52where the referee
00:25:53tells him to break.
00:25:53Chavez looking to
00:25:56fall in.
00:25:57That stopped
00:25:57Whitaker's head.
00:25:59Whitaker though
00:25:59coming back.
00:26:01See, Chavez knows
00:26:02he can depend on his chin.
00:26:03He doesn't feel
00:26:03Whitaker can hurt him
00:26:04especially if he's
00:26:05going backwards
00:26:05and taking his power
00:26:06away.
00:26:07And he is just
00:26:07going to keep on
00:26:08coming.
00:26:10I charge the audience
00:26:11to keep watching
00:26:12the body shots
00:26:12because that's all
00:26:13Chavez talked about.
00:26:14The body shots
00:26:15no matter what
00:26:16happens to body shots.
00:26:18And he has lived
00:26:18up to his promise
00:26:19again the punching
00:26:21through the...
00:26:22There are going
00:26:23to be points
00:26:24taken away
00:26:24in this fight
00:26:24eventually
00:26:25they're hitting
00:26:25on a break
00:26:26because it's now
00:26:27happening
00:26:27that Whitaker's
00:26:28doing it.
00:26:28Bernal Whitaker
00:26:29mixing it up
00:26:30much more
00:26:31than anybody
00:26:32expected.
00:26:33He's got to.
00:26:34He's got to do
00:26:34something to keep
00:26:35him off.
00:26:36If not he'll
00:26:37eat him up
00:26:37Chavez will
00:26:38eat Peewee up
00:26:39unless Peewee
00:26:40puts some hurt
00:26:40on him
00:26:41and he's
00:26:41punching away
00:26:42now.
00:26:43Another good
00:26:43shot.
00:26:44Round two
00:26:45in the book.
00:26:48Tremendous
00:26:48round.
00:26:52I charge you
00:27:18keep looking
00:27:19at this body
00:27:19punching.
00:27:20Watch the
00:27:21devastation
00:27:21as it's going
00:27:22to strike
00:27:22him out.
00:27:23That's in
00:27:23the kidneys
00:27:24and one
00:27:24in the liver.
00:27:26And back
00:27:26comes Whitaker
00:27:27with a good
00:27:27body shot
00:27:28of himself.
00:27:29And here's
00:27:30what he's
00:27:31been warned
00:27:31for twice.
00:27:32Whitaker
00:27:32has been
00:27:33warned
00:27:33for although
00:27:33Cortez
00:27:34has been
00:27:35warning him
00:27:36but Chavez
00:27:37is just
00:27:38as guilty.
00:27:39Well see
00:27:39here you'll
00:27:40find a
00:27:40little last
00:27:41shot
00:27:42just
00:27:42let me
00:27:42give it
00:27:42to you
00:27:43take this
00:27:43with you
00:27:43just as
00:27:44they break
00:27:44up.
00:27:47Round three.
00:27:53When Whitaker
00:27:53first stepped
00:27:54into the ring
00:27:55for the first
00:27:55time as a pro
00:27:56Chavez
00:27:56was already
00:27:5844-0
00:27:59with one
00:27:59world title
00:28:00just putting
00:28:00things in
00:28:01perspective.
00:28:02Real low
00:28:02blow.
00:28:05Chavez landed
00:28:05a real low
00:28:06blow but
00:28:06it didn't
00:28:07have the
00:28:07force.
00:28:08Another
00:28:09low blow
00:28:09but to the
00:28:09butt.
00:28:10Chavez
00:28:11now stalking
00:28:12Whitaker
00:28:12but Whitaker
00:28:13holding his
00:28:14ground and
00:28:14coming right
00:28:15back flicking
00:28:15that jab.
00:28:16See what
00:28:17Whitaker does
00:28:17that is
00:28:17effective is
00:28:18he steps
00:28:18around and
00:28:19then fires
00:28:19back.
00:28:20He doesn't
00:28:20just run
00:28:21and vacate
00:28:22the premises
00:28:22as Camacho
00:28:23did quite
00:28:23often.
00:28:24He'll step
00:28:24around and
00:28:25fire back
00:28:25and that's
00:28:26where he
00:28:26can be
00:28:26effective.
00:28:27He's being
00:28:27effective.
00:28:28It's just
00:28:29not effective
00:28:29enough to
00:28:30keep him
00:28:30off and
00:28:31to win
00:28:31these rounds.
00:28:32It's not
00:28:32as if he's
00:28:33being overwhelmed
00:28:34at all.
00:28:34He's in
00:28:35this fight
00:28:35the whole
00:28:35way.
00:28:40Whitaker
00:28:40with the
00:28:41jab
00:28:41effective.
00:28:42So far
00:28:42his most
00:28:43effective
00:28:43round.
00:28:44Finding
00:28:44him with
00:28:44the jab
00:28:45and his
00:28:45combinations.
00:28:46So far
00:28:46this is the
00:28:47first time
00:28:47he has
00:28:48been the
00:28:48aggressor.
00:28:49Even though
00:28:49he's not
00:28:50going forward
00:28:50he's punching
00:28:51more than
00:28:52Chavez is.
00:28:53Something that
00:28:53we and the
00:28:54people at home
00:28:54might want to
00:28:55look at.
00:28:55Something that
00:28:56Muhammad Ali
00:28:56was a master
00:28:57at.
00:28:57Hit you with
00:28:58a jab on
00:28:58the land and
00:28:59grab you and
00:28:59hold on.
00:29:00And this is
00:29:00something Whitaker
00:29:01looks like he
00:29:01may be doing.
00:29:02See it?
00:29:02Hit and hold
00:29:03on.
00:29:04And Chavez
00:29:04can't break
00:29:04loose
00:29:05from that.
00:29:05Could be a
00:29:05long night.
00:29:06And a
00:29:07frustrating one.
00:29:08Well he's
00:29:09reaching Chavez
00:29:10but that's no
00:29:10mystery.
00:29:11A lot of
00:29:11people have
00:29:11reached him.
00:29:12He takes
00:29:12an awfully
00:29:13good shot.
00:29:16Chavez
00:29:16continues to
00:29:17chase
00:29:18Curnell
00:29:19Whitaker
00:29:20keeping his
00:29:21distance.
00:29:23But as he
00:29:23backs up
00:29:24landing
00:29:25Curnell
00:29:26Whitaker
00:29:27looking
00:29:27impressive.
00:29:30There's a
00:29:31sharp right
00:29:32by Whitaker
00:29:32that connected.
00:29:34Takes a
00:29:34tremendous
00:29:34amount of
00:29:35energy to
00:29:35move like
00:29:36that backwards
00:29:36all night
00:29:36long and
00:29:37still be
00:29:37effective.
00:29:38We'll see
00:29:38in round
00:29:39seven,
00:29:39eight,
00:29:40ten come
00:29:40around.
00:29:40What
00:29:40happens?
00:29:41Stamina
00:29:41could be
00:29:42a key.
00:29:44When will
00:29:45Curnell
00:29:45Whitaker
00:29:46get to
00:29:46conserve
00:29:47some
00:29:47energy?
00:29:48My guess
00:29:49is never.
00:29:50No,
00:29:51not this
00:29:51night.
00:29:52A nice
00:29:53thumping
00:29:53body shot
00:29:54by Chavez
00:29:54again.
00:29:55You can
00:29:55hear it
00:29:55all the
00:29:56way
00:29:56through
00:29:56here.
00:29:57Well,
00:29:57Whitaker
00:29:58having a
00:29:58good round
00:29:59here.
00:29:59This is
00:29:59the kind
00:29:59of
00:29:59round
00:30:00he's
00:30:00got to
00:30:00get if
00:30:00he's
00:30:00going to
00:30:01stay
00:30:01in
00:30:01this
00:30:01fight.
00:30:04See,
00:30:04he's not
00:30:04punching
00:30:06hard,
00:30:06but he is
00:30:07landing,
00:30:08and those
00:30:08are
00:30:08points.
00:30:10Certainly
00:30:11his best
00:30:11round so
00:30:11far.
00:30:12Good
00:30:12right
00:30:13hands
00:30:13of the
00:30:13body
00:30:13as
00:30:14well.
00:30:14Whitaker
00:30:18now going
00:30:19to the
00:30:19shoulder
00:30:20attack.
00:30:24Approaching
00:30:2520 seconds
00:30:26remaining,
00:30:27round three.
00:30:28Terrific round
00:30:29for Pernell
00:30:29Whitaker.
00:30:31Something else
00:30:32Pernell does
00:30:33is roll
00:30:33with the punch
00:30:33as well,
00:30:34so it
00:30:34minimizes
00:30:34the shot.
00:30:35no question
00:30:39about it.
00:30:40This is a
00:30:40good round
00:30:41for Whitaker.
00:30:43He finally
00:30:44has started
00:30:45to fight
00:30:45back.
00:30:46with every
00:31:01chance
00:31:01you get.
00:31:02I ain't got
00:31:04no move.
00:31:05Now listen,
00:31:06keep that
00:31:07something.
00:31:08You're
00:31:09all right.
00:31:09Right?
00:31:10You're
00:31:11close
00:31:11or you
00:31:12have a
00:31:12potential
00:31:12shot.
00:31:13There
00:31:13wasn't
00:31:13bad.
00:31:13Right?
00:31:14Put your
00:31:15hand
00:31:15He didn't turn it, he didn't turn it.
00:31:17He didn't turn it.
00:31:19See, you got your pace now. You got your pace, baby.
00:31:21Okay. All right.
00:31:23Let's take a look at the jab that Whitaker's using,
00:31:25a double jab, effectively, to keep Chavez off balance.
00:31:30And look at the work he does on him holding on, spinning him.
00:31:34Well, here you see that jab eventually gets in Chavez's way
00:31:37and sets up combinations where he can work off them.
00:31:40The jab is keeping him a little bit at bay, a little confusing.
00:31:43He's being, excuse me, Whitaker's being reasonably effective with it.
00:31:46Well, that's why Georgie Benton just told him,
00:31:48your jab is working good, Pete. Don't abandon that jab.
00:31:50Jab and move around it.
00:31:52And certainly, that was a formula, if he could do that.
00:31:55Well, that's certainly the most we've seen Chavez tested in round number three.
00:32:01Keep the punches up, says Joe Cortez to Purnell Whitaker.
00:32:06There was a low blow there, and Purnell looked at the referee
00:32:09as if asking for a little help,
00:32:11and the referee stopped and gave them both a warning.
00:32:14And now, brawling tactics,
00:32:16brawling and mauling by Purnell Whitaker.
00:32:18Hey, Whitaker's hand in foot speed,
00:32:20doing the job.
00:32:23And now the crowd, Coy lustily,
00:32:26Purnell Whitaker putting his arms around Joe Cortez.
00:32:30He pushed him.
00:32:31He pushed him out of the way.
00:32:32Yeah, you don't touch a referee.
00:32:33That's one thing you don't do in boxing.
00:32:35Don't touch the referee.
00:32:36That's a good way to get a point taken.
00:32:38Oh, that shot was to the hip and the thigh.
00:32:53Now, you see, that's nice, but when it starts to slow you up,
00:32:59those shots start to work on your tendons and your ligaments,
00:33:03what do you do then?
00:33:04You can't apologize, so that's going to cut his mobility.
00:33:06Now look what happens.
00:33:07Sweepy is chasing Chavez backwards.
00:33:09Yeah.
00:33:10This is something I don't totally understand.
00:33:12But Chavez unloading.
00:33:14Got him in the midsection.
00:33:16Chavez spun him around.
00:33:18That's all that was about.
00:33:19Interesting that Chavez has had to resort to being a bit of a counterpuncher,
00:33:22even though he's being the aggressor most of the time.
00:33:25Is Chavez showing quickness?
00:33:29Chavez showing some boxing instead of coming forward,
00:33:32and Peewee's taking the offensive.
00:33:34Nice right hand.
00:33:36Nice right hand by Peewee.
00:33:38Oh, and a left to the belly by Purnell Whitaker.
00:33:41Oh, look at that blocking move.
00:33:43Was that out of a football field or something?
00:33:44It looked like a cross-throw.
00:33:45Oh, you see.
00:33:46So now, Sweepy turns and takes another shot to the hips.
00:33:48I wonder how many of those shots can take
00:33:50before locomotion's going to start to be effective.
00:33:51He is not going to be able to walk around this way.
00:33:52He may swell his thighs up a day.
00:33:53Well, Joe Fraser certainly did to Ali in his fights.
00:34:11I don't need you.
00:34:12I don't need you.
00:34:13I don't need you.
00:34:14Stay around, guys.
00:34:18Less than 30 seconds in round four.
00:34:21Another effective round for Sweet Pea Whitaker.
00:34:24Right hand by Chavez, and back comes Wilker.
00:34:40Final seconds of the four.
00:34:42Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:34:44Again, hitting on the break.
00:34:45At the top.
00:34:46Chavez.
00:34:47Being talked to by Cortez.
00:34:50Now you're boxing.
00:34:51Now you're boxing.
00:34:52Now you're boxing out there.
00:34:53This is the way you have to do.
00:34:54That's all.
00:34:55No, no, no, no.
00:34:56Now you're boxing.
00:34:57Now you're boxing out there.
00:34:58Now you're boxing.
00:34:59Now you're boxing.
00:35:00Just do what you have to do.
00:35:01That's all.
00:35:02Now you're doing it with a great feeling.
00:35:03Now, look.
00:35:04Just continue to do what you do.
00:35:07Don't do that nothing.
00:35:08Look at me.
00:35:09Keep that shovel going first.
00:35:14Keep that lever.
00:35:15Keep that right jumper working.
00:35:16Hey, the thing's broke.
00:35:17I can't use it.
00:35:18When you get on the inside,
00:35:19I want to see them other cuts working for you.
00:35:20Now, you're doing a hell of a job, guys.
00:35:22The jab is the one that's going to keep it in check.
00:35:25When you ain't do enough,
00:35:27When you ain't doing nothing else, I want you to jab.
00:35:29I ain't got out of the fight, man!
00:35:31Right?
00:35:31Now listen.
00:35:34You see what I'm doing?
00:35:35You know what I'm doing?
00:35:35You know what I'm doing?
00:35:36You know what I'm doing?
00:35:36You know what I'm doing?
00:35:37Well, they're satisfied in Whitaker's corner, but I would love to hear what they're saying
00:35:48in Chavez, because he's blown those last two rounds, and now this fight's even...
00:35:52Chavez, very much aware of that, comes out storming to begin round five.
00:35:57Four or five straight body shots, and they seem to be very effective.
00:36:00And very strong.
00:36:03And now, Whitaker very much in a defensive posture as he backs off on Chavez, who comes forward
00:36:10relentlessly.
00:36:12But back comes Whitaker with a combination of the head.
00:36:16I think a lot of things that are going to be important with regard to the judges, how
00:36:18do they judge the big body shots and the little quick combinations of right jabs and left hands
00:36:24that Whitaker throws?
00:36:25There are points, but how do they score them?
00:36:29Chavez concerned with the judges before the fight.
00:36:31One is from Texas.
00:36:33The other two are England and Switzerland.
00:36:36And in England, they love this kind of boxing that Whitaker does.
00:36:39They love intelligent boxing and punching even if it's powder puff.
00:36:43But there's nothing powder puff about Whitaker.
00:36:45Whitaker's putting in shots here.
00:36:46Forget about it.
00:36:47He's putting in as much hurt as he's taken.
00:36:50Whitaker's fighting a fine fight against Chavez.
00:36:52Thus far, a very impressive start by the champion, Cornell, Sweet Pea Whitaker.
00:37:02A crowd of better than 63,000 here at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, Chavez country.
00:37:12They are waiting for Chavez to start pouring it on.
00:37:21But Whitaker has been too elusive to this point.
00:37:25I'll tell you what, he's very aware of Whitaker, that is, of those body shots.
00:37:28He is dropping his hand to get him down near his ribcage every time they get close.
00:37:31Pretty good poke there off the right hand by Chavez.
00:37:34That got Whitaker's attention.
00:37:41It's a frustrating type of fight for Chavez.
00:37:43A man that likes to just fight and be a man's man.
00:37:46He can be moved and worked around like this because he is being manipulated just a bit from time to time.
00:37:51He's doing much better this round more than he did the last two in which Whitaker even took the offense off.
00:37:57Chavez said before the fight, he would not be like a wild man and chase the dancing southpaw.
00:38:10Whitaker just came through with a nice story of uppercuts.
00:38:14But he has resigned to the fact that he's got to.
00:38:17Chavez has been chasing him around.
00:38:19Some of those uppercuts, what they call a shoe shine, they just throw them real quick and flashy.
00:38:23And they're for more of a visual effect than they are to be effective.
00:38:25But that right hook and left hand, they were meant to be effective.
00:38:28Piece of gauze coming off of Chavez is going to cause him to stop this in a second because that can flick it an eye and hurt you.
00:38:35There it is.
00:38:37With 11 seconds, now 10 remaining in the fifth round, Joe Cortez does stop it momentarily.
00:38:47Whitaker looking very fresh over there.
00:38:49Chavez leaning on the ropes, looking to get some air, some wind.
00:38:53I wonder when they're going to stop putting surgical tape on gloves and put electrical tape that never bounces off.
00:38:58Enough already of this stuff.
00:39:00Chavez winning this round up to this point.
00:39:03Only had 11 seconds to go.
00:39:04Got a little breath of fresh air here.
00:39:07And so did Schubert.
00:39:08Yes, both of them.
00:39:09Exchange there and win.
00:39:10It's in the round.
00:39:11Better than 63,000.
00:39:18We were notified by Jimmy Lennon Jr. before that that's an indoor record.
00:39:23But we have been told that Elise Fink still holds up.
00:39:26But not by much.
00:39:27Jimmy was awfully close.
00:39:30But you never know.
00:39:30A couple of stragglers can come into here in the next few minutes and they break the record.
00:39:34You never can tell.
00:39:50Here's that little bit at the end of the round, which really didn't mean much because Chavez,
00:39:54at this point, had already won the round pretty big.
00:39:56He didn't need to go any further with us.
00:39:58Just a little shoe shining there.
00:39:59Nothing much.
00:40:00Yeah, Pernell's doing what he's supposed to be doing.
00:40:02But Chavez right now a little more effective for that round.
00:40:04Let's see if he can keep it up.
00:40:06And his corner.
00:40:06And come back.
00:40:07His corner is telling him, Bobby.
00:40:09All right, now he's starting to work on the body.
00:40:11Now step up the body attack.
00:40:14Round 6.
00:40:15Scheduled for 12.
00:40:16The WBC Waterweight Championship.
00:40:18The fight.
00:40:19But more importantly, the right to be called the best five-foot pound of the world.
00:40:26What was that?
00:40:27What would you call that?
00:40:28Well, he squatted down.
00:40:29He took a shot at what he thought would be his ribs when he got up and he hit his butt instead.
00:40:34All of those things are going over the hip joint.
00:40:36That hip joint starts to swell as it did, as I said, in the Ali Frazier fight.
00:40:40And you cut your mobility.
00:40:41And he's hit them a lot in the hip.
00:40:43Whitaker almost actually sat on his heels.
00:40:46He was so loved.
00:40:47His rear end barely off the ground.
00:40:49A buttocks shot by Chavez.
00:40:51Now to the head and body goes Whitaker.
00:40:53You know, Bobby, if he slipped on that and he touched the camera, it's a good account of
00:40:57him.
00:40:58Oh, sure.
00:40:58Dangerous.
00:41:00The chance of Chavez.
00:41:05Oh, low blow.
00:41:07But good shots by another low blow by Whitaker.
00:41:10Joe Cortez was behind it.
00:41:11We saw it.
00:41:12Both men working hard inside.
00:41:19Hard inside.
00:41:20Vicious.
00:41:20Vicious, intense infighting.
00:41:22There is a rule we have in the gym.
00:41:23If a fighter hits you low more than once, you better get one or two back.
00:41:26Let's go.
00:41:26Let's go.
00:41:26Let's go.
00:41:33Chavez not getting any big clear shots at Whitaker.
00:41:36He's doing a masterful job of defense.
00:41:38Here's Whitaker.
00:41:40Frustrating and absolutely staying away from harm's way.
00:41:44And then London with the left hand.
00:41:46Whitaker.
00:41:46Another one.
00:41:49Whitaker really fighting a nice fight.
00:41:54The middle round chess match is upon us.
00:41:58Again on the hip.
00:42:00Same spot just about.
00:42:02Well, these hip shots have won him out.
00:42:04Oh!
00:42:06The low blow by Whitaker.
00:42:10That was an incredible shot.
00:42:12He thrust the left off a foot.
00:42:13Dead on the money.
00:42:15Or I should say under the money.
00:42:17South of the border.
00:42:19Apropos from where he lives.
00:42:22The thing is they both threw body shots.
00:42:25We'll see that on replay.
00:42:26And they both landed south of the border.
00:42:29But Whitaker's was much harder.
00:42:32And it was centrally located.
00:42:34It was the perfect disabling shot.
00:42:37Now that remains to be seen what that's going to take out of him,
00:42:40out of Chavez in the next two rounds.
00:42:41Because even if you start off, you ain't the same guy for a while.
00:42:44And Joe Cortez will give Chavez as much time as he wants to recover.
00:42:49Julio says, OK.
00:42:53We continue round six.
00:42:56Let's see how this affects Chavez.
00:42:58Oh, again.
00:43:00Another one.
00:43:01Oh, oh, oh.
00:43:01Right back.
00:43:04That's two.
00:43:05That one got to central.
00:43:07That was somewhere near Julio-Con.
00:43:12But Chavez getting infuriated.
00:43:14And he landed right here.
00:43:15He connected to the face of Whitaker.
00:43:18Whitaker backpedaling and shooting out Jez.
00:43:22But the on-rushing Chavez not giving up.
00:43:26Here comes that cat-and-mouse game again in the corner.
00:43:40Final seconds, round six.
00:43:42Let's go.
00:43:45Oh.
00:43:48Let's go.
00:43:51Let's go.
00:43:51Okay?
00:43:59Let's go back, let's control a little bit more.
00:44:03He's got a pair of straight, he's got a pair of left.
00:44:07Try it there, you get that pair of left.
00:44:11If you don't start, don't you get him, because he's not getting him.
00:44:15Cut off.
00:44:17Yes, you don't get him.
00:44:19it's first low blow watch Whitaker's hands now as he throws it right there now that Bobby
00:44:36is a low blow that was dead center dead center low as bad as you can get right back right
00:44:44back I mean almost the exact same punch off a foul flag sixth round we begin round seven low blow
00:44:52extravaganza by Whitaker and then hitting after the bell again now they were Chavez was told in the
00:44:59corner every time you stop fighting you give this guy some chance keep punching as you've done all
00:45:04along don't stop punching on the guy keep coming on Whitaker has never had a knockout past the seventh
00:45:10round let's see what happens it has been an impressive performance though by the champion
00:45:17Pernell Whitaker here in Chavez country Whitaker nearly picked up at the hip they continue to go
00:45:25on Joe Cartes has continued Joe Cartes has moved in control of this furious but a lot of missing
00:45:34I'll tell you something that I've done to fighters that bend that low I hit him on top of the head
00:45:41right in the top of the cranium it's not an illegal shot and it hurts like hell it's hard to penetrate
00:45:46the cranium of Julio Cesar Chavez who has an abnormally thick one I think that Pernell Whitaker is
00:45:54discovering that Pernell Whitaker has been getting in some tough tough shots here tough shots on Chavez
00:46:02working very effectively on the inside it's a good thing he hadn't got a big punch because if he had a
00:46:08big punch like Norris has that would have been bad news for Chavez he got hit and got his clock clean
00:46:14there another low blow I don't think this fight will ever end in a disqualification but he's certainly
00:46:34building a heck of a case according to the WBC Constitution after two warnings the referee can
00:46:48start to deduct points in terms of a low blow foul rule well the warnings have been issued
00:46:54points will be deducted gingerly something I think Chavez is doing it is actually a mistake is
00:47:03he's squaring up making himself a bigger target because he's so frustrated he's almost walking
00:47:08after Whitaker and his right foot comes up and he loses his own good solid balance
00:47:12Whitaker is winning the generalship here because he's making Chavez fight the fight that he wants
00:47:23he is dictating the tempo and he's frustrating Chavez today
00:47:26a crunching left rubbing left there by Whitaker and then he goes to the belt
00:47:32I'll tell you what right now things don't look good for Chavez
00:47:38Whitaker's getting too much steam going and he's going to pull this fight even in a matter of moments
00:47:43and that is it for round seven
00:47:48all right let's take a look at Whitaker look at that shot right in there and it wasn't just one it was many of those right-handed
00:47:54shots let's take another look Bob
00:47:56you watch it again Whitaker's being sharp using a jab boom right on the button and he's using that one of the shots
00:48:00all right let's take a look at Whitaker look at that shot right in there and it wasn't just one it was many of those right-handed shots
00:48:06all right let's take a look at Whitaker look at that shot right in there and it wasn't just one it was many of those right-handed shots let's take another look Bob
00:48:11you watch it again Whitaker's being sharp using a jab boom right on the button and he's using that little pity pat stuff he shouldn't Chavez should not allow him to be so flustered by the boy if he could if he could punch Bobby when something lands like that after three jabs that hurts if he could punch
00:48:17then they wouldn't be so quick
00:48:19yeah
00:48:21yeah
00:48:23yeah
00:48:27yeah
00:48:31yeah
00:48:35yeah
00:48:37yeah
00:48:39yeah
00:48:41yeah
00:48:43yeah
00:48:45yeah
00:48:47that's the most concern in the face of Julio Cesar Chavez we have ever seen as he comes out for round eight
00:48:52I saw something not only in the last round but I saw him on the stool he's never stayed on the stool that long
00:48:59that's it
00:49:00ever
00:49:01and usually he stands
00:49:02but that was because of a bad back
00:49:06left hand that got in by Whitaker
00:49:09Chavez continues to be frustrated by the champion
00:49:15Chavez has missed so much that his punches no longer have that speed and reflex that he had before
00:49:20he is being out general
00:49:22by Whitaker and it's showing on the face of Chavez the first time in his life that he hasn't been able to figure a guy out
00:49:29Chavez who normally is stronger as the round goes on is actually appearing to be a little weaker here
00:49:33and as this is happening Whitaker's taking a little more control getting a little more accurate
00:49:37and I'm carving a place in the ring where I can hide when the decision comes down
00:49:40well
00:49:41a very worried crowd here at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio
00:49:45well
00:49:46right now this fight is just about dead even
00:49:48I've got Chavez ahead by one because those early rounds appeared to be Chavez chasing
00:49:53but Whitaker has gotten himself back into this fight and I would be surprised if the judge from Texas doesn't have my head
00:49:59I'll be surprised about that
00:50:01the other judges England and Switzerland
00:50:03Chavez now continues to come forward but he is getting belted off of uppercuts by Whitaker
00:50:09all head shots
00:50:13Whitaker has come on and is beginning to just control the action
00:50:20here's something to throw into the pie
00:50:22does Whitaker at 147 fight Terry Norris
00:50:26well Norris said to us yesterday he'd come down to 147 tomorrow to fight Chavez
00:50:31but that might change who knows after tonight
00:50:34oh another shot
00:50:36I would say let's wait till it's 12
00:50:38it's a long fight
00:50:39and we got a long neck
00:50:40beautiful body shot
00:50:41beautiful body shot by Whitaker
00:50:43oh look over there
00:50:48oh Whitaker landing to the head of Chavez
00:50:53a clean shot
00:50:55flush on the face
00:50:57Chavez stopped dead in his tracks
00:51:01Whitaker is just pummeling Chavez
00:51:05something I thought we'd never seen
00:51:07I'm glad we're not in Azteca Stadium
00:51:09yeah
00:51:12Whitaker continues to have his way
00:51:15with the seemingly invincible Julio Cesar Chavez undefeated 87 at all
00:51:22Whitaker oozing with confidence
00:51:24his hand speed is beginning to tell
00:51:27and what's happening is what happened in the Mildred Taylor fight
00:51:32which was that he went so far behind he needed a big finish
00:51:36and that's what's happening to him again
00:51:38will Chavez require another Mildred Taylor like finish to pull this one out
00:51:43as we head to the mound
00:51:45as we head to the mound
00:51:47that's going to be good
00:51:50that's going to be good
00:51:53thank you
00:51:56listen
00:51:57how you feel
00:51:58give me the same
00:52:00keep in turning and keep in the combination
00:52:03you got me covered
00:52:05now you made a hell of a stand
00:52:07I take a good look at the at the tremendous job Whitaker is doing a body shot another shot to
00:52:26the face and away he goes a more punching and away he goes boy he is fighting just like Meldrick
00:52:31Taylor you know later in the round he's doing the same thing and he's actually taking it to
00:52:35Chavez at certain points pushing him back pushing him in the ropes and he's digging he's using the
00:52:39uppercuts up on the inside underneath very effective well Chavez is gonna have to win
00:52:46around in here someplace to start getting back into this fight or else he's gonna be
00:52:50in a losing cause what was the last time you actually uttered those words pretty
00:52:59Chavez could be in a losing cause that's because Pernell Whitaker has been near flawless here in the middle rounds
00:53:10it's round nine as they say the early rounds were back and forth back and forth the last two rounds
00:53:14all Sweet Pea Whitaker and really Sweet Pea Whitaker I mean there was no doubt about that convincingly Sweet Pea Whitaker
00:53:22and to this point this crowd bordering on disbelief
00:53:31right hand by Chavez
00:53:39a little bit of wobbling through these legs just now but he's fighting back he's trying to just get the motor started here and let loose with a flow to get back in
00:53:47I can't believe I'm gonna make the next statement that I'm gonna make with Chavez left not only his game plan but was so anxious to come in here and prove how much condition he was in how he's gonna chase him he's throwing all course into the wind and abandoning any defense whatsoever
00:54:00he has just forgotten about defense he's letting his head
00:54:04his emotions dominate and he's not fighting an intelligent fight
00:54:09he just tagged Whitaker with the right hand Whitaker with a wild miss
00:54:13is this a turning point here in round nine
00:54:16Whitaker returned his favorite hitterman in the back side
00:54:18and the crowd reacts
00:54:22he's got this round in his hands if he just starts to throw more punches like that
00:54:35again Whitaker answering back off the body shots by Chavez
00:54:40it's a much better round for Chavez than the last couple though this is a round that's close and could go right down
00:54:44here you see him chasing landing some clean right hand some terrific body shots
00:54:48and Peewee slowed up a little bit but hey it's been a tremendous past couple rounds for him he needs a break in front of time as well
00:54:54and I think that's what he what we're looking at he's taking a break here because that he couldn't keep that steam going that he did before
00:55:00that snap Chavez's head back against stamina could become an issue
00:55:09a flurry by Chavez but not much damage Whitaker with a right hand
00:55:15now a left by Whitaker continues to be effective
00:55:20another statement that I've never uttered before I think Chavez is tired
00:55:24fatigue looks to be taking its toll
00:55:28and how do you score that two or three blistering body shots and then a counter punch
00:55:39wild finish to round 9
00:55:47and they're telling them you're winning that that's the kind of round we need you can't
00:55:54get it out of here
00:55:58and they're telling them you're winning that that's the kind of round we need you can't get it out of here
00:56:02the guy is tired now come on now we're gonna win this
00:56:13he's dead he's dead he's shot his boat in those two fights come on on these last two rounds you took that one give us this one
00:56:24the sense of urgency in the corner of Julio Cesar Chavez
00:56:35looking to bolt off the stool and get back into it we hit double figures round 10
00:56:46we're now sweet beat Whitaker for the most part has had his way
00:56:53good case to be made for both fighters but I think Chavez was just a little bit more effective and once again we see
00:57:04crisp counter punches from Peewee because as you point out there is no defense or even a pretense of defense on the part of Chavez
00:57:11he's coming in he's willing to take the shot to land his
00:57:15he's pretty now you got me saying Peewee I'm going to kill you
00:57:19well he is small you know I used to call him Peewee when he was in the Olympics
00:57:26he changed it to sweep it
00:57:28looks bigger than life right now in the face of Julio Cesar Chavez
00:57:34Bobby you may be right
00:57:37tired
00:57:39tired
00:57:42fatigued on the part of Chavez he's not throwing
00:57:51you see the times that he had the opportunity to throw something and he didn't throw it
00:57:55not only that but he's missing opportunities when Peewee just squats here and bends over
00:57:58hit him on top of the head it's legal
00:58:00hit him anywhere but he's not throwing eight points
00:58:03and Whitaker's showing his strength just a second ago
00:58:06just bowling Chavez back
00:58:09there's a left hand a quick left snapping shots by Whitaker again penetrating
00:58:15and let's let's reiterate ring generalship and that's a point and that Whitaker is taking command completely
00:58:22it's his ring generalship that's dictating the pace of this fight it's not in the hands of Chavez
00:58:28well I'll tell you what we've built this fight up the hype has not been uh we've not been let down
00:58:35the fight is every bit of it that Sweepi is making a little bit of his stinker ahead of it for the Chavez fans
00:58:41well you haven't heard this place rocking in a while that last round was the first big ovation that he got
00:58:48he's tentative he's tentative Chavez is not throwing he's not leading he's waiting for the other guy to get off
00:58:53and that big cry comes from this corner you first you first
00:58:57you first
00:58:59even after giving him the last round I still have Chavez behind
00:59:01he's got his work cut up and there's only three rounds left
00:59:03he may need another Melchick Taylor like finish
00:59:13slapping shots by Whitaker
00:59:17and they're getting through to the face
00:59:19of Chavez less than 30 seconds in the 10th
00:59:23I wonder what the odds in Vegas were on the draw
00:59:25because I hate to have to get out of here with the decision
00:59:29at last check they were approaching 3-1 in favor of Chavez
00:59:35out speeding him
00:59:37Whitaker out speeding Chavez
00:59:39three four punches to one
00:59:41Chavez depending on the one big one
00:59:43but it's not bothering Whitaker
00:59:45well on the outset we thought that Chavez
00:59:47would somewhere along the way try to hammer Whitaker
00:59:49the hammer is on the other foot
00:59:51or a hand as the case may be
00:59:53or a hand as the case may be
00:59:55or a hand as the case may be
01:00:01I won't let the guy steal you two rounds
01:00:03you know what I'm saying
01:00:05I don't give a damn what happened
01:00:07do not let this guy steal you two rounds
01:00:09and you can judge when you go
01:00:11when you lose it
01:00:13but you're doing all right now
01:00:15just keep your hands moving
01:00:17keep the jab going and when you get close move your hands
01:00:19your hands moving
01:00:21your hands moving
01:00:23your hands moving
01:00:25your hands moving
01:00:27now they're telling him
01:00:29don't let this guy win these last two rounds
01:00:31you got to get all out
01:00:33you need these two rounds
01:00:35we can blow this thing
01:00:37the same thing is being told to Whitaker on the other side
01:00:39don't let him take these two rounds
01:00:41I got it dead even
01:00:43and I think Whitaker possibly has an edge
01:00:45the ability to dictate the pace of this fight so far
01:00:47I still have Whitaker with a slight edge
01:00:49and here we come down the wire
01:00:51championship round
01:00:55round 11
01:00:57yes the words of Georgie Benton
01:00:59in Whitaker's corner
01:01:01don't let him steal these last two rounds
01:01:03and the same thing being said
01:01:05over in Chavez's corner
01:01:07set
01:01:09the stage for round 11
01:01:15little low blow there
01:01:17but not too hard
01:01:18fortunately for Whitaker
01:01:19Chavez is still bent on those body shots
01:01:21and right now he should take any shot
01:01:23well he's being out punch
01:01:25through three and four to one
01:01:27and Chavez really looks tired
01:01:29he looks worn out
01:01:31another low blow
01:01:33and Whitaker goes upstairs then
01:01:39Whitaker the peppery Olympic captain
01:01:43of 1984
01:01:45winner of a gold medal
01:01:47winner of world titles as a pro
01:01:49looking
01:01:51for the ultimate badge
01:01:53the first man to beat Julio Cesar Chavez
01:01:55could it happen
01:01:57it looks like he's on the way
01:01:59is the one that has the look of the conqueror here
01:02:01he's the one that looks like he's in command
01:02:03and desperation is beginning to be written
01:02:05all over Chavez's face
01:02:07we've just been informed
01:02:09that the odds are 20 to 1 on the draw
01:02:11in Las Vegas
01:02:13and wouldn't you like to be sitting on a decision either way
01:02:17right above us Julio Cesar Chavez
01:02:19nearly sitting
01:02:21on our table
01:02:23Chavez
01:02:25leaning on
01:02:27Joe Cortez
01:02:29looking for leverage
01:02:31Chavez
01:02:33is looking like
01:02:35desperation is upon him
01:02:37another of boxing at boxing's adages
01:02:39even the greatness can grow old in a day
01:02:41well he went up the welterweight too
01:02:43let's not forget that
01:02:45and he's in with a great fighter
01:02:4731 year old Julio Cesar Chavez
01:02:51probably never in his wildest dreams
01:02:55thought this would be the scenario
01:02:57at this stage of the fight
01:02:59well the answer is he didn't take the punishment
01:03:01that Meldrick Taylor did
01:03:03he didn't start to fall apart
01:03:05Meldrick was ahead by about five rounds when he fell apart
01:03:07but nothing has happened to Whitaker
01:03:09his defense has been so superb
01:03:11that he hasn't
01:03:13slowed down or it hasn't changed his game plan
01:03:15and Meldrick
01:03:17the Meldrick Taylor fight was
01:03:19Meldrick was actually considerably further ahead
01:03:21and sharper but somewhere in between all that
01:03:23he absorbed the enormous amount of punching as you said
01:03:25which just deteriorated him in the last two rounds
01:03:27that did not happen to Whitaker
01:03:29he looks nice and
01:03:31nice right hand
01:03:33Whitaker with the left hand
01:03:35trust me
01:03:39well that's another one in the bank
01:03:41for Whitaker and it's starting to look like
01:03:43the end of a long trail
01:03:45for Chavez
01:03:47is this an end of an era
01:03:49round 11 is history
01:03:59and look at the punishment that Whitaker inflicts here
01:04:25he's in command
01:04:27as much as the crisp as sharp
01:04:29as Chavez is flailing
01:04:31something you'll see here too when you're tired
01:04:33even just that little sneaky quick stuff
01:04:35hurts, rocks, moves your head back
01:04:37when you're tired
01:04:39and Vince Lombardi said it best
01:04:41it makes cowards of us all
01:04:43it also hurts like hell in boxing
01:04:45here's the announcement
01:04:47for round number 12
01:04:49we can't read the judges' minds
01:04:53but it appears
01:04:55Cesar Chavez
01:04:57may need a miracle finish here
01:04:5912th in the final round
01:05:01I think he does
01:05:02I don't think he could
01:05:03he could justify winning this fight
01:05:05Whitaker is holding on
01:05:06and I think in his mind right now
01:05:07he may be hearing
01:05:09signs of
01:05:10and he plays for
01:05:11Mildred Taylor's fight
01:05:12just last the last round
01:05:14yeah just hold on
01:05:15let the let the
01:05:16look at that
01:05:17let the round pass
01:05:19will it be deja vu
01:05:21St. Patrick's Day
01:05:221990
01:05:23Chavez and Tanner
01:05:25two seconds to go
01:05:28Chavez running
01:05:29let's see what happens here
01:05:31well
01:05:32miracle sakes seldom happen
01:05:35twice in a row
01:05:37and he's suddenly going in boxing
01:05:38Chavez called out a gift from God
01:05:40and he'll need another one
01:05:42he didn't get another one
01:05:43come on
01:05:44and there was another low blow
01:05:45complained about by Whitaker
01:05:46but the referee said nothing
01:05:48even God can only be so gracious
01:05:50that's first
01:05:53well he followed the victory
01:05:55he tried to hit him on the top of the head
01:05:59Whitaker
01:06:01continues to impress
01:06:03Chavez tries to spin him around
01:06:05but to no avail
01:06:06and they get caught between the ropes
01:06:09precious seconds are flying
01:06:11Whitaker's having his way
01:06:12the ring general ship is clearly in his favor
01:06:16good left hand by Whitaker
01:06:18Whitaker not letting up
01:06:19a brilliant exhibition of ring generalship
01:06:22he carried out the game plan of Georgie Benton and Lou Duva
01:06:25and let us say that the gentleman is a great great fighter tonight
01:06:31he is proving that against the seemingly invincible one Julio Cesar Chavez
01:06:35coming in undefeated in 87 points
01:06:39if Chavez loses this fight I predict he will retire
01:06:43oh he's got his own title to defend in December
01:06:47yes
01:06:48still the super lightweight champ
01:06:51blood on the nose of Chavez
01:06:54damage on his face something we are not accustomed to seeing
01:06:57or he is either
01:06:58less than a minute remaining on the 12th and final round
01:07:01what a surprise here at the Alamo Dome
01:07:08San Antonio
01:07:10Colonel Whitaker may be on the threshold of being the first man
01:07:14to beat Julio Cesar Chavez
01:07:17the crowd is doing well but begging him to come forward and finish Whitaker
01:07:20they sense a problem with the upset and they know he need to knock out
01:07:24I certainly think he does
01:07:27Whitaker's left eye is now hurt
01:07:30there's 20 seconds it's academic now
01:07:32he would have to take a miracle
01:07:34can Chavez
01:07:37knock out Whitaker in the final 10 seconds
01:07:45Whitaker won't let him
01:07:46to elusive
01:07:48history
01:07:50history
01:07:51history
01:07:52Whitaker
01:07:53it's going to make it
01:07:55a near flawless fight brilliant
01:08:25Green generalship dictating the tempo from, Bobby, I'd say, the middle rounds on to the very end.
01:08:31Well, you know, right from the beginning, Pernell did not get into a slugfest, which is who they wanted.
01:08:35And he did what I said. He stepped around. He didn't run and back out have to reset.
01:08:40He just pivoted, stepped off, and recounted something he had to do to be effective and win.
01:08:45And I'll tell you what, we've got the judges now. They decide the future. They decide history right now.
01:08:50Bobby Ches, the decision in the hands of these judges.
01:08:54It's Franz Marti out of Arau, Switzerland.
01:08:58Mickey Vann from Leeds, England, and Jack Woodruff from Dallas, Texas.
01:09:05The Chavez camp not happy with that Texan judge coming into this fight, but they agreed to stay with it.
01:09:12Look at this. Pernell Whitaker exhausted emotionally and physically.
01:09:20I think you just witnessed the best fight of his life, bar none.
01:09:27So impressive was Pernell's Sweet Pea Whitaker coming here into hostile environment.
01:09:33The crowd here, as we mentioned before, from about the 8th or 9th round on, was in disbelief.
01:09:39I think we can take it one step further right now.
01:09:41I think they are stunned.
01:09:43Pernell Whitaker, much more tension, 32-1, 15 knockouts coming into the fight.
01:09:49And I think we are finally ready for the decision.
01:09:56Let's go up to Jimmy Lennon, Jr.
01:09:58Ladies and gentlemen, after 12 rounds of boxing, here are the score totals.
01:10:10Judge at ringside, Jack Woodruff scores the bout 115 to 113 in favor of Whitaker.
01:10:18Judges at ringside, Mickey Vann and Franz Marti both score the bout the same, 115 to 115, a draw.
01:10:33The decision is a majority decision, a draw.
01:10:39A draw, and you can see the reaction of Sweet Pea Whitaker.
01:10:43He can't believe it, and frankly, I can't either.
01:10:46I can't believe it, but then again, I can.
01:10:49In boxing, this type of thing happens, and what I say, I'd like to be the one in Vegas at 20-1 that had the draw.
01:10:57Whitaker obviously thinking hometown decision.
01:11:02Meanwhile, Chavez doesn't lose, but it's his first blemish on his record.
01:11:06He goes to 87-0-1 now.
01:11:10Maybe we'll see a rematch.
01:11:12Yep, the bout has been declared a majority draw.
01:11:16Jack Woodruff, the judge from Dallas, Texas, scored it for Whitaker, 115-113.
01:11:24Mickey Vann of England, Franz Marti of Switzerland, 115-115.
01:11:31So, it ends in a draw, and Pernell Whitaker remains the champion.
01:11:35Let's go up into the ring of the fight, doctor.
01:11:36Tabla, una decisión que no te puede gustar a ti ni a nadie.
01:11:42Lo dijiste en español.
01:11:43I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
01:11:44A draw, something you can't possibly be satisfied with.
01:11:48No, realmente no estoy satisfecho.
01:11:50No, he's not really very satisfied.
01:11:53Whitaker es un peleador difícil, lo dije.
01:11:54Whitaker es un peleador difícil, lo dije.
01:11:58This time, it wasn't one of his greatest nights.
01:12:05He tried to do the best part, to force the fight.
01:12:08He believes that he's won the fight.
01:12:11He surprised him several times, but he was doing a lot of things.
01:12:16He was hitting him with low blows.
01:12:21Occasionally, and very intentionally.
01:12:24Bueno, la pelea era, no sucia, pero muy rough.
01:12:28It was, I'm sorry, the fight was very rough.
01:12:32Sí, lo que pasa es que Whitaker, pues, no presentó mucha pelea.
01:12:36Whitaker didn't present a very strong fight to him.
01:12:40Bueno, creo que una revancha.
01:12:42All right.
01:12:42He wants a rematch.
01:12:43All right, we're talking rematch, and obviously the dupe is extremely upset.
01:12:47Don King, who has the power to make a rematch, what's your opinion?
01:12:51I think it was a great fight.
01:12:52I kind of thought Julio had the edge, because he was the one that was carrying the fight.
01:12:56Whitaker is a great fighter.
01:12:58There's no question about that.
01:12:59But he has a very awkward style to be able to fight with.
01:13:02But it wouldn't have been no fight if Julio didn't continue to try to press and fight.
01:13:06So I think it was a great fight.
01:13:07He didn't come out of draw.
01:13:08Let's go back to the table again and do it again.
01:13:11All right.
01:13:12I must tell you, that ring generalship of Whitaker was superior at the end.
01:13:16It was superior.
01:13:16All right.
01:13:17And amidst all of this consolation, we go to Steve Albert at ringside in the relative peace
01:13:23and calm of ringside.
01:13:24All right.
01:13:25Thank you, Ferdy.
01:13:26Well, Purnell Sweet Pea Whitaker has apparently left the ring.
01:13:33Our Montel Williams here at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, Texas, has scampered after Mr. Whitaker
01:13:40to try and get his reaction in the dressing room near the dressing room.
01:13:43So we'll wait on that.
01:13:46Before we track down Montel, who's looking for Purnell Sweet Pea Whitaker, we are advised
01:13:51to go back to the fight, Dr. Ferdy.
01:13:54Well, an upset and extremely mad camp of Whitaker.
01:13:59Not only mad for the draw, but for the fact that he, as a champion, was not interviewed.
01:14:02First refused an interview, saying the story is with Whitaker.
01:14:06And we did not interview him.
01:14:08First, he refused an interview.
01:14:09Understandably upset about the draw.
01:14:11Understandably upset that he wasn't gotten to first.
01:14:14But in the mayhem that this ring is, you get who you can get at the time.
01:14:17And so we go back to Steve Albert.
01:14:19And possibly we will be able to get a calmer Danny Duva and Lou Duva in the dressing room
01:14:25with Whitaker later.
01:14:27All right.
01:14:27Back to Steve Albert at ringside.
01:14:29Thanks very much, Ferdy.
01:14:30Most people were picking Julio Cesar Chavez to win either by decision or late via TKO.
01:14:37But here's Purnell Whitaker live in his dressing room.
01:14:42Being hugged by members of his support team.
01:14:46He does retain the WBC Weatherweight Championship, but doesn't via a majority draw.
01:14:52Ronnie Shields over there.
01:14:54There's Lou Duva, his mentor and guru.
01:14:57But I really feel that he fought a brilliant fight tonight.
01:15:03No question about it.
01:15:04He did what he wanted to do.
01:15:05He did not let Chavez be Chavez-like.
01:15:08Did not let him dismantle him to the body.
01:15:10Chavez tried to go to the body, but Whitaker devised a perfect defense.
01:15:12And as I mentioned earlier, stepped around him and recountered.
01:15:15And that was key.
01:15:16He was more effective.
01:15:17Chavez just simply wasn't.
01:15:18And can you imagine?
01:15:19I think somebody pointed out during the course of the broadcast,
01:15:22if Whitaker did possess a knockout punch, what he could have pulled off tonight.
01:15:27Well, it's a combination of things.
01:15:28If he had that punch, would he have that speed?
01:15:30Always get there first.
01:15:31And the two put together, who knows?
01:15:33If he had punch and that speed, Chavez may very well have not finished tonight.
01:15:37Well, let's try to pick the brain of Julio Cesar Chavez.
01:15:39You're a fighter.
01:15:40What do you think is going through his mind right now after winning 87 consecutive fights,
01:15:45nearly 14 years without ever having been defeated?
01:15:48All of a sudden here tonight, it's a draw, but he didn't win.
01:15:51Well, I'll tell you, he's got to be really rethinking his entire being down in Mexico.
01:15:56He may invariably retire.
01:15:58That's how bad the performance was, and he's too proud.
01:16:01All right, Montel Williams has been able to get into the dressing room.
01:16:03Montel?
01:16:05Hey, Steve, I'll tell you, I'm here with Sweet Pea Whitaker.
01:16:08Sweet Pea, you did it.
01:16:09He was hitting you low.
01:16:10I don't know what's going on.
01:16:11Tell me what happened.
01:16:12Well, obviously, we knew going into it that he was going to be doing it, hitting on the legs.
01:16:17So, you know, I just didn't let it distract me any.
01:16:19You know, I just went with the game plan, the uppercups, the body shots, and we see now who was the attacker, you know?
01:16:28This is almost like the second time that you've been ripped off, in a sense.
01:16:31Like I said before, you know, that's why I'm glad we got TV and we got millions of viewers watching this one,
01:16:36so the public could really decide it.
01:16:38I knew we weren't going to need any judges.
01:16:39In the Ramirez fight, in the Ramirez fight, you got ripped off, you had to come back and avenge it.
01:16:43Do you want to try again to avenge this?
01:16:45This is like a loss.
01:16:47No, it's not.
01:16:48It's a win for me because the public gets to decide it.
01:16:54When we take the poll, you take a poll on your next show, and you'll see the ones that say he won and the ones who say who lost.
01:17:00But nine times out of ten, you know, I'm just going to enjoy this one because the people know who the one is.
01:17:04We've got a pound-per-pound best-in-the-world draw.
01:17:07What do you say about that?
01:17:09To get the draw, what do you say about pound-for-pound?
01:17:12Who is the best?
01:17:13I feel like Evander did in the Olympics.
01:17:15You know, this was an Olympics victory for us.
01:17:18I feel like Evander did getting ripped off for the goal like I got ripped off for this goal.
01:17:23You know, but we all, like we did, we got blood and guts.
01:17:25We come back.
01:17:26We get it back.
01:17:27Lou, we're going to come back one more time?
01:17:28Well, I don't know yet.
01:17:29I'll see my son Danny, see what he says about it.
01:17:31Right now, understand one thing.
01:17:33He is still the champion of the world.
01:17:35Chavez did not beat him.
01:17:37He beat Chavez.
01:17:38He got the draw.
01:17:39He should have got the win.
01:17:40So they gave him a draw.
01:17:41But you know, it's a funny thing, Montel.
01:17:43This always happens with the WBC, with Suleiman and King.
01:17:46It always happens that way.
01:17:47All right.
01:17:48Well, I'm going to go back to you, Steve.
01:17:49Back to you, Steve.
01:17:50All right.
01:17:51Thank you very much, Montel.
01:17:52Well, as we recap with Bobby Chavez.
01:17:54Bobby, some final thoughts.
01:17:56Well, I thought I would be sitting here saying we're one step closer to really knowing about
01:17:59that coveted label of pound for pound, best around.
01:18:02With the decision we're not, with the performances, we may be.
01:18:05And a rematch?
01:18:06I don't know if a rematch will happen.
01:18:08Purnell is a very proud guy.
01:18:10He may want to do it again.
01:18:11I know Chavez probably wants another one to set the record straight in his mind.
01:18:15But for now, it's just a guesswork.
01:18:17Well, after tonight, the new battle cry may truly be, remember the Alamo Dome.
01:18:21Bobby Chavez, thank you very much.
