One member of the Firearm Dealers and Range Operators Association, is calling for the urgent digitization of firearm users' license records, after a ruptured line at Police Headquarters destroyed some FUL documents.
00:00Member of the Firearms, Dealers and Range Operators Association, Nari Alfonso, who is also an attorney at law, says the firearm application system should have been fully digitized years ago.
00:14She tells TV6, while the new commissioner has announced plans to do it, it is long overdue.
00:20When Gary Griffiths was on the seat, he was moving towards that same position. My understanding is a lot of the initial moves were reversed by then, I think it was Acting Commissioner McDonnell Jacob.
00:38So things like putting your FUL information on a card, a digital card, with this information that the police can access.
00:46The TTPS says for privacy and security, only FUL file numbers will be made public. Applicants' names will remain confidential.
00:57Alfonso tells TV6, steps to protect privacy are commendable.
01:02Only the FUL applicant and the police should have access to that number. So at least it preserves the security and the safety of the affected applicants.
01:15Sir, it wouldn't be the equivalent of saying, Nicole Romani, we need you to bring another ITS result or medical or psychometric result.
01:26So that's a very prudent approach.
01:28On Tuesday, Commissioner Lister Guvaru assured that the 55,000 files were not secured at the police headquarters building, but rather at the firearms unit at another location.
01:40The only firearm files affected were those brought to my office for weekly adjudication.
01:49So there's no need for panic.
01:52Your applications are safe.
01:55We are currently reviewing the damaged documents to determine what can be salvaged.
02:01And we'll be reaching out to affected applicants and asking them to contact the firearms permit unit so that we can reconcile their files.
